Landry’s struggle It’s all on the Sooner QB and Jones has to know it

I

t’s funny, but this may be the season everybody gets to really know and like Landry Jones. A fixture at Bob Stoops’ weekly press conference this season, even two Mondays ago during an offweek, the Sooner quarterback has proven refreshing behind the microphone. One of the questions given him this week involved dealing with the pressure of being, well, him. Jones talked about his “circle.” “I think, for me, it’s not really paying attention to the people outside of my circle and just listening to the people inside my circle,” he said. “My teammates, Whitney, my coaches and my family are the people who are going to influence me and encourage me.” “Whitney,” of course, is Whitney Hand, Jones’ wife and the best player on Oklahoma women’s

basketball coach Sherri Coale’s team, even if Big 12 coaches only made her an honorable mention preseason pick. It’s hard to know what most fans care or think about Jones’ circle, but put me in the camp that not only thinks it’s pretty cool Jones’ wife has a place in his football circle, but that he’s secure enough about it to not mind telling us. Also, put me in the camp that fully understands the Sooner Nation’s ultimate judgment upon Jones will not be based upon its personal feelings for him, no matter how refreshing he is • See HORNING Page 14

THE BIG STORY: HIGH STA K ES

Season on the line? If Sooners fail to rebound it could be a very long year By John Shinn Transcript Sports Writer

The last time Oklahoma started the Big 12 Conference schedule with two losses was 1998. That losing streak grew to five straight before it finally ended. The coaching change that followed was widely praised. It would be absurd to think the 17th-ranked Sooners (21, 0-1 Big 12) are stumbling down the same inept path as former coach John Blake’s squad did 14 years ago. There are 13 seasons of evidence that OU coach Bob Stoops knows how to guide a team through a successful

season. Nevertheless, once a team begins spiraling downward it’s a pattern that’s hard to pull out of. OU’s opportunity to ascend comes today at Texas Tech (4-0, 1-0). However, there are so many questions about which OU team will show up. Will it be dominant? Will it be lethargic? No one knows. The Sooners, however, fully grasp the magnitude of today’s game. It’s been 14 days since the season was tipped by a 24-19 Owen Field loss to No. 7 Kansas State. • See SEASON Page 9

“When you take a loss, you get that chip on your shoulder and it kind of revitalizes you and gives you that attitude. I think we’ve always had that attitude (that) whenever we’ve had a loss, we’ve come back with an attitude.”

OKL A HOMA AT TE XAS TECH: BRE A K ING DOWN TODAY’S G AME

Sooners need to gain on the ground By John Shinn

Oklahoma running back Damien Williams runs through the line during the Sooners’ loss to Kansas State.

Transcript Sports Writer

Anyone thinking Oklahoma would be in a cakewalk today at Jones AT&T Stadium must have just risen from a decadelong slumber. Five The things to Sooners watch haven’t John Shinn won on Texas Tech’s home field since 2003 and are 4-4 against the Red Raiders in their last four meetings. Every factor imaginable has played a part in OU’s struggles against Texas Tech. There was controversy in a 2005 loss. A concussion suffered by Sam

RUNNING GAME

n

OU has vowed to make running back Damien Williams a bigger part of the offense. It must, because running the ball is the Sooners’ route to offensive success. Texas Tech’s Kenny Williams is a threat, but the Sooners have more talent in the backfield and that advantage must be exploited.

PA S S I N G G A M E

n

In August, it would have been hard to believe OU quarterback Landry Jones would be off to such a slow start. His accuracy issues have caused the Sooner offense to sputter. Texas Tech quarterback Seth Doege already has 15 touchdown passes. Clearly, he’s on the same page with his receivers.

PA S S D E F E N S E

RUN DEFENSE

n

Statistically, the Red Raiders have been one of the best defenses in the country. Their success stopping the run is the reason why. Opponents have averaged 2.6 yards per carry. But these teams have played varying levels of competition. The Sooners, however, haven’t proven they can consistently halt a running game.

Bradford was an overwhelming factor in 2007. In 2009 and last season at Owen Field, OU just got outplayed. OU has to play well today to end its Texas Tech issues. Doing these five

things correctly will reverse the trend: Run the ball: OU needs to get its running game going for several reasons. Junior Damien • See WATCH Page 11

Texas Tech has put up great numbers, but it hasn’t faced anything close to a Big 12 caliber passing attack. The Sooners haven’t either, but giving up one touchdown pass through three games shows their secondary is improved. This will be a statement game for OU’s secondary. It will be up to the challenge.

n

The Sooners’ special teams have been solid in the last two games. They must be tonight, because there’s an edge it can exploit. The Red Raiders have struggled covering kicks thus far. It’s not a big edge, but the Sooners’ return game needs to be a factor. If it is, the Sooners can swing a tight game into the win column.

n

OU coach Bob Stoops said there’s nothing “spooky” about playing in Lubbock. Three straight losses at Jones AT&T Stadium show the Sooners haven’t played their best there. But turnovers are not supernatural. OU has struggled holding on to the ball. If that doesn’t change, it will lose. — John Shinn

Season: So much on the line • Continued from Page 4 It caused some soul searching. “I think at OU, sometimes things come easily,” middle linebacker Tom Wort said. “When you take a loss, you get that chip on your shoulder and it kind of revitalizes you and gives you that attitude. I think we’ve always had that attitude (that) whenever we’ve had a loss, we’ve come back with an attitude. You prepare that much more with intensity. I think it helps.” OU has played some of its best games after losses. Last season was highlighted by a 58-17 route of Kansas State a week after the Sooners were stunned by the Red Raiders. OU rebounded from a loss at Texas A&M in 2010 by thumping Texas Tech. But there are no guarantees past trends will carry over. Those previous teams had already shown they were capable of playing dominant football. These Sooners haven’t. The offense has been inconsistent. The defense has had issues against the run. If either problem carries over it’s going to be tough to win in

an environment where OU hasn’t won since 2003. Stoops hates to compare seasons. There’s always something a little different about each team. He likes the way his team has practiced for the last two weeks. “You’re still gonna have to go and execute well, and we did at Kansas State a year ago, and didn’t turn the ball over,” he said. “In the end, yes, I see the same kind of attitude in how they’re working and coming to practice, coming to meetings. “

It doesn’t mean it will translate to on-the-field success. The only guarantee for this game is the fact Texas Tech has OU’s undivided attention. The loss to Kansas State opened some eyes that might have been closed. Losing has that effect. “I think it just happens once you lose a game,” center Gabe Ikard said. “You get a little more focused, maybe. I don’t know what it is. We just lost to a good team, but it’s one of those things where it definitely heightens your

awareness a little bit. “You maybe have a little small change in, maybe, your preparation or something. Each guy is different for that.” The Sooners have to be different today. Two losses to begin the Big 12 campaign would qualify as a disaster. The Sooners will either look like a team most figured would win the Big 12 or nestle into that role of underachievers. Watch: Can’t be turning it over • Continued from Page 5 Williams has shown he can be an explosive player if given the opportunity. The Sooners also need to do something to dampen the spirits of an often boisterous Texas Tech crowd. Running the ball does that better than anything. The Sooners haven’t been able to do it in their three straight losses at Texas Tech’s home field. Win the turnover battle: This is essential in any game, but it becomes magnified with the Sooners at minus four in turnover margin through three games. They haven’t been able to set their offense up with an easy scoring drive all season. OU’s turnover issues took a potential touchdown off the board and handed Kansas State a gift in the last game. Continued generosity like that will turn the Sooners into a doormat. Play well in the first and fourth quarters: The Sooners must get off to a better start. They have scored three points in three opening drives this season.

This will be OU’s first game in front of a hostile crowd. It must do something in the opening minutes to quiet Texas Tech fans. Scoring an early touchdown would help. This game doesn’t figure to be a rout. The Sooners are going to have to play well in the fourth quarter. Giving up a pair of late touchdowns to Kansas State provided the coffin’s final nails. That cannot happen again. Pressure Doege: When these teams met last season, Texas Tech

quarterback Seth Doege had a phenomenal game. One of the reasons was OU wasn’t able to get enough pressure on him. It’s a tough thing to do. The Red Raiders’ scheme is based on short drops and Doege getting rid of the ball quickly. The Sooners must be able to hit and knock down some balls at the line of scrimmage. Doege will pick OU apart if he’s given ample time and has clear passing windows. Jones must be accurate: Running the ball

will take some pressure off OU quarterback Landry Jones, but he must play well today. That will be defined by how many passes he puts on target. Jones was wild last time out against Kansas State, consistently throwing behind receivers. Most of the passes in OU’s offense are intentionally designed as long handoffs to receivers. Jones must put the ball on target so they can do something after the catch. John Shinn Follow me @john_shinn jshinn@normantranscript.com

COLLEGE FOOTBALL SATURDAY

Weis has his role model Snyder, Wildcats offer a blueprint By Dave Skretta AP Sports Writer

LAWRENCE, Kan. — It could have been interpreted as the first salvo fired against bitter rival Kansas State the day Charlie Weis was presented as the new coach at Kansas. Weis stepped to the podium and, not long into his introductory news conference, asked this rhetorical question: “Why was the University of Kansas 2-10 (last season) and why was Kansas State 10-2? I don’t have that answer, but that is what I am here for.” Over the last 10 months, he may have found some answers. “Starting with the head coach, that might be their biggest advantage,” Weis said with uncanny stoicism, referring to Bill Snyder, who will be on the opposing sideline Saturday.

Weis didn’t stop there, so effusive was he in praise of the seventh-ranked Wildcats. “I like the way they create extra gaps in the run game,” he said, “how they use misdirection to put pressure on defenses. If you’re not sound fundamentally on defense, they’ll expose you. “I have a lot of respect,” Weis said, “for what he does.” Enough respect that Weis believes Kansas State should serve as a blueprint for Kansas. “I don’t want to get our fans mad, but it’s a pretty good role model, you know? Everyone wants to look at it differently than that, but from my perspective, they’re doing everything right.” Weis said Tuesday. “Let’s try to get to that level first. If we can get to that level in the not-too-distant future that would be a good place

They’re undefeated a third of the way through the season for the second straight year, with a Heisman Trophy candidate

in quarterback Collin Klein, a devastating ground game led by John Hubert and a defense that somehow finds ways to make stops. In short, they’re everything to which the Jayhawks (1-3) are aspiring. Kansas has certainly gone through growing pains since • See WEIS Page 13

Monroe a weapon for Longhorns By Jim Vertuno AP Sports Writer

AUSTIN, Texas — D.J. Monroe touched the ball for the first time as a Texas Longhorn and went 89 yards for a touchdown. That was Sept. 5, 2009. Since then, coach Mack Brown has spent his weekly press conferences hearing variations of the same question: “Why doesn’t D.J. get the ball more?” The answers were simple: Too inconsistent. Struggled to catch. Crowded backfield. Needed to learn the playbook. That’s all changing now. A fifth-year senior, Monroe has scored in every game this

season and last week set a school record with his third career kickoff return for a touchdown, his first since his freshman season. “I was just waiting for someone to kick the ball to me again,” Monroe said as No. 11 Texas (4-0, 1-0 Big 12) prepares to host No. 8 West Virginia (4-0, 1-0) on Saturday. Monroe still doesn’t get that many touches. He’s just making them count. His four touchdowns are tied for second on the team. “He gets the ball in his hands and he makes things happen. He provides a spark,” Texas quarterback David Ash said. Longhorns fans have been

waiting for Monroe to fulfill the promise he showed in the first game of the 2009 season when Colt McCoy was still the quarterback and the Longhorns were charging for the national championship game. There have been so many teases along the way. Heading into his senior season, Monroe didn’t want to be a player best remembered for unfulfilled potential. Monroe quit running track in the spring to focus on how he could better fit into secondyear offensive coordinator Bryan Harsin’s game plan. West Virginia defensive coordinator Joe DeForest knows he has to account for Monroe whenever he’s on

the field. DeForest tried to recruit Monroe when he was as assistant at Oklahoma State “He’s one of the fastest kids we’ll see,” DeForest said. “They hand him a little jet sweep and he runs around people.” And with Monroe scoring touchdowns, Brown doesn’t have to fend off so many questions about why Monroe’s not involved in the offense. “D.J. has been a fan favorite for a long time,” Brown said with a subtle nod to the pestering he’s endured over the last three years. “Nobody is asking anymore because he’s playing well.”

Weis: New Jayhawk coach doesn’t have to look far to find his inspiration • Continued from Page 13 Weis took over for the fired Turner Gill in December. After a less-than-impressive win over South Dakota State, the Jayhawks blew late leads against Rice and Northern Illinois, sand-

wiched around a 20-6 loss to No. 15 TCU. Now, Weis is asking his players the same rhetorical question that he offered up to the media who gathered for his first press conference inside the Anderson Family

Football Complex. “’Here’s them, here’s you. Why is that?” Weis said. “Both are in Kansas, right? Both are in the same conference, right? Both have the same recruiting base.” The only difference seems

to be in terms of success. And perhaps, as Weis pointed out, the guys on the sideline. Snyder has relished nothing more than beating up on the Jayhawks during his time in Manhattan, going 16-4 against them, many of

the victories the lopsided variety that send fans of both teams heading home early. “You get 12 games a season, maybe 13,” Weis said. “That’s 12 times for a competitive young guy to really be competitive, and that’s 12

out of 365 (days). That’s it. There isn’t any more. “How could you pass up the opportunity to do what you love to do and be as competitive as you love to be in any game that you play? I think they all feel that.”

Horning: On Jones • Continued from Page 3 behind the microphone. Instead, it wants nothing more than a strong season, preferably a championship season. Really, it wants Jones to be the quarterback he’s sometimes proven himself able to be, rather than the quarterback he’s also proven himself able to be through three games this season. The new line is an old line. Jones must let the game come to him. “I think sometimes you get mixed up and we want to push it down the field a little bit more than you should,” he said. “I think what this position is all about is taking what the defense gives you regardless of what down it is or how long you have to go to get another first down.” He’s mostly right. Sometimes a play must be made. Jones’ problem has been trying too hard to make one when it’s unnecessary. That, and momentarily losing his mind. But, sure, whatever works. What Jones really must know is it’s all on him. Bob Stoops can protect

Jones’ confidence as much as he possibly can, filibustering as he has in the past about the line having to do its job and the receivers having to do their jobs and the backs having to do theirs. But Jones must recognize that for the bluster it is. He’s been here for five long years. He saw Sam Bradford take OU to the national title game and win a Heisman Trophy. He has to know that no player can make a difference the way a fine starting quarterback can make a difference. He’s not been dealt a perfect hand. He lost Kevin Wilson one season and Ryan Broyles the next. He lost Jaz Reynolds and still has Kenny Stills. His two best receivers may be freshman Sterling Shepard and senior transfer Justin Brown. He just has to make it work. That, or be the best guy out there, dragging everybody as far as he can. Because it’s all on him. Jones has to know this.
