Consumers confused about credit counseling By Broderick Perkins RealtyTimes.com

Counseling, whether it be for homeownership, foreclosure, credit, bankruptcy or other financial issues, is supposed the clear the air and prepare consumers for a given financial condition. Ironically and unfortunately, consumers are confused about counseling that's supposed to remove the confusion.

The latest National Foundation for Credit Counseling's (NFCC) Financial Literacy Survey found that confusion could be preventing consumers from seeking help the help they need when they need it most. "When struggling with debt and other personal finance issues, consumers do themselves and their families a disservice by not seeking advice

from a trusted professional nonprofit credit counseling agency," said Gail Cunningham, NFCC spokeswoman. "However, there can be major differences among (counseling) agencies," she added. The survey revealed the following areas of confusion consumers suffer when it comes to counseling. • Consumers said they didn't know which agency to turn to for

assistance. Fact: Caution is warranted in the financial services world, but not to the point where it becomes a head-in-thesand proposition. Consumers can ferret out legitimate help by looking for an agency associated with a membership organization such as the NFCC, federal government agencies like the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban

Development (HUD) and community groups like NeighborWorks America. Also check with state consumer protection or licensing agencies, the state attorney general's office and the Better Business Bureau. • Many consumers, already struggling with cash flow problems, believe counseling will cost too much. Fact: Much counsel-

ing is free, especially HUD-certified counseling mandated by certain mortgage programs. NFCC member counseling is free or low cost - no service can be denied based on an inability to pay. Fees are waived in hardship cases. • Some consumers believe credit counseling would hurt their credit report and credit score. (con’t. on page 6)

Fact: To the contrary. Counseling services aren't reported to the credit bureaus. However, studies show that credit scores improve with credit counseling. Counseling teaches consumers to use credit in a responsible way. • Some consumers believe that credit counseling agencies offer only advice, rather than real solutions. Fact: Counseling is education. Counselors teach both short-term and long-term solutions for consumers. At NFCC, each consumer is provided with a written action plan that includes concrete steps to address immediate concerns and lay the groundwork for a financial goals. Debt management is one such tool. The counselor negotiates with the creditor for a lower monthly payment, a lower interest rate, and late fees and over-limit fees stopped or lowered. Once in place, the plan provides immediate relief for those struggling to meet debt obligations. Foreclosure prevention counseling likewise works with the lender to provide an alternative to foreclo-

Bankruptcy counseling seeks alternatives to bankruptcy and is designed to provide tools to prevent bankruptcy in the future. • Some consumers said they believed that debt settlement or bankruptcybankruptcy were better or easier options. Fact: Debt settlement and bankruptcy are serious financial decisions. Like foreclosure, they both have negative consequences for a consumers credit report and score. They aren't for everyone, but more of a last resort option. "When experiencing financial difficulties, it is important to recognize the problem, and then promptly contact a professional credit counseling agency," said Cunningham. Delay is not an option.

Five swimming pool myths that are all wet (BPT) - From the belief that it costs too much to operate a pool to the misconception it will go unused, myths about pool ownership abound – and they likely dissuade some homeowners from making this valuable home improvement. Here are five myths that simply don’t hold water: Myth: Pools are too costly to install. Reality: The cost of a pool will depend on many factors, including the size of your yard, the dimensions of the pool and the materials you choose. Finding the right installer is key. The Association of Pool & Spa Professionals (APSP) offers an online member locator to help consumers find an APSP Certified Professional in their area.

Myth: It’s difficult and costly to maintain a pool. Reality: Pool pumps and filtration systems are more energy efficient than ever, saving money on electricity costs. Myth: Pools are not energy efficient. Reality: Energy-efficient pool pumps can use up to 30 percent less power to operate. Myth: A pool won’t enhance my home’s value. Reality: Among people who purchased a home with an existing

swimming pool, an eyeopening 78 percent said the presence of the pool contributed to their decision to buy, according to the APSP survey. Myth: If we get a pool, we’ll never use it. Reality: Seventy-six percent of pool owners say they are extremely or very satisfied with their pools. They believe having a pool entices their family to spend more time together in their own backyards.
