(MCT) Q: Even though I keep my patio door and windows closed, flies get into the house at this time of year. They sit on the sunny southwest window and then die. It is quite unpleasant. How do they get in and what can I do about it? A: It sounds as though you are describing cluster flies. They are para-
sites in earthworms during the summer. In fall, they fly to buildings to seek any small spaces or cracks by which they can get inside for the winter. They often find their way into wall voids and other cavities, particularly on the south and west sides of structures, where it’s warmest. Eventually they can emerge into homes through small spaces, such as around light fixtures. There are two steps
cracks and spaces will minimize the number of cluster flies that get inside. —Consider supplementing these efforts with an insecticide barrier around the outside of your home. Again, concentrate your efforts around windows and doors. Use an insecticide labeled for the exterior of buildings or hire an experienced pest management company for (con’t. on page 10)

you’re planning to build a new house, I strongly recommend that you work with your builder to incorporate passive solar design, but even if you just want your current home to be more comfortable, there are some things you can do. The word “passive” says it all. Your home will keep your comfortable without needing mechanical, energy-using products like heaters or fans. And the passive home strategy can also be adapted to work well in keeping a home comfortable in hot weather as well. The general strategy is based on the laws of physics that tell us that heat moves from hot to cold until there is no temperature difference between the two areas. In cold weather, you can use this principle to have the sun’s warmth stored in your home during the day and then released in the colder evening. What makes this different from

just a natural occurrence is that you do things in and to your home that facilitate the process. An important part of the passive solar process is the concept of thermal mass — the use of materials within the home to store heat. Examples include concrete, stones, masonry, bricks and tiles, all materials that are often found below or behind the surface of walls and floors in a home. There are also
absorber materials that can be used in passive homes — exposed masonry walls, partitions, or even large containers of water that are struck by sunlight and then absorb the heat from the sun. Another component of a good solar home is some type of solar collector and large windows, especially located on the south side of the home with unobstructed exposure to the sun. The
sun gets into the home through these windows and is able to reach the thermal mass or absorbers inside. Once the heat is absorbed during the day, the next issue is how to get it to circulate through the home. Though some homes have mechanical systems like fans or blowers that help circulate the heat that is released throughout the home, many homes are truly passive and just rely on the natural heat transfer modes of conduction, convection, and radiation.
Finally, to help keep the process operating, passive systems usually include various types of sun controls. For example, blinds and outdoor awnings can be regulated to open when the sun is desired (usually between 9 a.m. and 3 p.m. in winter) and closed at other times to help keep the heat from flowing outdoors. Good roof overhangs will allow the lower winter sun to get indoors while keeping out much of the higher summer sun that can overheat the home. As I mentioned, there

Just to be on the safe side, our real estate agent had a chimney guy come in to inspect before we bought. His prognosis was that we needed a complete liner and some other work done, including cleaning, to the tune of $3,458. Of course, we got a second opinion that mentioned some of the
same things but to the tune of $2,554. We had a third guy come in who pretty much did the same inspection as the previous two. His prognosis was that everything was fine and he wasn’t going to sell me something I didn’t really need. In addition, he mentioned the liner that was included in the disclosure statement — an item the other two guys overlooked or failed to mention. Is there some way I can tell what I really need? We’re looking at the wood stove as an important source of heat
to augment our oil-burning furnace. A: What does the disclosure statement mean by “recent”? In your neighborhood, from my experience, recent can mean 1927. In addition, what kind of liner? Most liners these days are stainless steel and pretty pricey, but last for a long time. I assume this is a wood-burning insert in the fireplace. The Chimney Safety Institute says the safest operation of such a device is achieved
when the vent pathway from the insert extends from the stove collar all the way to the top of the flue “creating a new chimney liner within the chimney.” This new chimney liner is sized correctly for the wood stove or insert, so drafting the smoke out of the system is less likely to be a problem. In addition, it is an easy and economical way to extend the life of your chimney, since the new liner protects the existing structure from heat dete-

rioration and acid-based smoke condensation. This may be what is being referred to as “recent.” Perhaps you can have the real estate agent ask the previous owners where they bought the insert, then call to find out how it was installed. Safety is your first concern at all times. That said, you don’t want to spend lots of money on something you really don’t need. Once you are able to get the information from the previous
owner, you might be able to get a better handle on what steps, if any, are next. I don’t know whether bringing in a fourth inspector will help or further confuse. ——— (Have questions for Alan J.
