Turns out that getting the house ready for winter isn’t just a cold-winter thing — it’s an eco-friendly thing, too. A tight house uses — and loses — less energy, requires fewer natural resources and produces less pollution. With just a bit of effort, you can make

your fall house chores even greener. Here’s how: Seal: Gaps and spaces around windows and doors and in the attic can suck up to 30 percent of your home’s energy efficiency, according to the U.S. Department of Energy. Fill them with caulk and you’re being green. Use the right caulk, and you can be even greener. Low- or no-VOC caulks have fewer noxious chemicals, but they may not be the best
choice. Look for a product with a long life expectancy, said Phil Smith with Minnesota’s Office of Energy Security. Using a caulk that has a 25-year life expectancy, such as siliconized acrylic, means you’ll use less material and discard fewer empty caulk containers over the years. Cover: Even after window frames have been sealed, windows can be a source of heat loss and drafts. The standard fix — a win-
dow insulation kit — may not seem very ecofriendly. What’s green about stretching plastic over the windows and sealing it with a hair dryer? Quite a bit, actu-
ally. Insulated windows reduce heat loss. And you can make the insulation kits greener by re-using them. At the end of the season,

(MCT) FIXING A BATHROOM AFFLICTED WITH UGLY TILE A couple of weeks back a reader asked me about painting bathroom tile a different color instead of spending thousands of dollars to replace it. As I always hope, many of you wrote in with recommendations based on your experience. I’ll share a few. Marilyn Harris of Hatboro, Pa., and her husband are the second owners of a house built in the 1940s. They bought the house in the mid-1970s,

and the bathroom had pink and maroon tile set in a concrete base. The tile was “in good condition — except for the color,” she says. They had the tiles redone in a bone color by a local porcelainrefinishing company in
1991. “The grout lines are lost with the reglazing, but the process has been great for the past 18 years,” says Harris, adding that she had the white tub reglazed in 2003.

months about the dangers of compact fluorescent bulbs (CFLs) and wondering why anyone would want to bring these “hazardous products” into their homes. complaining that the CFLs they buy never last very long, I tried to find out the best ways to use the bulbs so they reach the promised lifetimes their manufacturers claim. Consider the following: 1. Compact fluorescent bulbs do contain mercury, an element that is found naturally in the environment, though exposure to a large quantity of it could cause health problems. The bulbs do not give off any mercury when they are being used or being handled. When putting them into lamps, hold the bulbs by their base and don’t force them into the socket to avoid breaking them. 2. The amount of mercury in a CFL is about 5 mg — not even enough to fill the period at the end of this sentence. By comparison, some watch batteries have 25 mg of mercury in them, dental fillings can have 500 mg, and a common household thermometer has 500 to as many as 3,000 mg of the element in them. CFL manufacturers continue to work on reducing even the very small amount of mercury in the bulbs, and there have been significant reductions in recent years. 3. The only way for the mercury vapor to escape
the tube is if the bulb breaks. If that happens, ventilating the room for about 15 minutes will allow the gas to escape. You can then carefully scoop up the broken pieces, double-bag them and throw them out with your trash. The largest manmade sources of mercury are coal-fired power plants (the Sierra Club estimates that coal-fired power plants, which produce about half of the country’s power, put about 50 tons of mercury into the air every year). If you’re really concerned about the amount of mercury in our air, then, you’re actually better off buying CFLs than incandescents. Since CFLs use less electricity than incandescents, they actually reduce the amount of mercury getting into our environment. EPA estimates that during its 8,000hour rated lifetime, a 13watt CFL would put out about 1.8 mg of mercury from electricity use and from emissions if it goes to a landfill, while a 60watt incandescent that puts out the same amount of light would give off more than three times that amount of mercury from its elec(con’t. on page 18)
