Every entrance of your home should be lit with at least one type of security light. Consider placing motion-activated lights, which only come on when they detect motion, at the side, front and back entries of your home, on a detached garage, storage building, gate or garage door. For a little extra light, make sure you have plenty of light inside your house as well. With more hours of darkness, you’ll need to use more electricity, so consider saving money by replacing incandescent light bulbs with energy-sipping compact fluores-
cent light bulbs CFLs. Energy Star-rated CFLs use 75 percent less energy and last up to 10 times longer than standard bulbs. Placing CFLs in just five of your home’s more commonly used light fixtures could save you up to $70 a year, according to the Environmental Protection Agency. Safety for all ages Winter often sees plenty of guests, delivery people and repairmen coming to your home. Consider ways to make your house safer for all ages that enter it. If you’ll be having very young guests, a childproofing kit can help ensure grandchildren, nieces and nephews, or even your own kids, won’t be able to open doors, cabinets or drawers that might get them in trouble. Hardwoods in unlikely places (ARA) - The no-no’s about using hardwood near a water source are vanishing. And while allowing water to rest on a wooden surface for extended periods will always be a no-no, the American Hardwood Information Center, finds that more design professionals are saying yes to client requests for the warmth, charm and richness of natural wood no matter where it’s used — in the bath,
the kitchen and even the basement. “I recently designed a bathroom that was all hardwood,” reports Douglas Wright of Miller & Wright Architects in New York City. “The only place we used stone was in the shower. Everything else was maple - floor, walls, ceiling.” What about the inevitable splashing that baths are prone to? But remember - it’s important to always
dry splashes immediately. With normal use and proper cleaning, these surfaces should last indefinitely. Wright adds that for greater dampness protection, “We applied several coats of matte polyurethane. If water splatters out of the sink or shower, it doesn’t stain anything and with that low-luster finish, the wood looks completely natural.” For a New Hampshire kitchen, Wright designed a maple backsplash and counter. Wood as a kitchen work surface “seemed kind of crazy at the time,” he says, “but it turned out beautifully.” His only caveat: Use a cutting

To extend the durability of any work surface, a protective sealer is always wise. “Applying three coats of polyurethane to hardwood allows the rich, warm color to come through and you don’t have to worry about the surface,” Wright says. “It resists water and cleans easily - just wipe up the splashes and spills.” Other pros agree. Indianapolis kitchen and interior designer Janice Pattee had no qualms about specifying a walnut countertop for the peninsula in a kitchen makeover. “The cabinets were white-painted maple. For contrast, the client chose grained wood.” She particularly loved the double-ogee edge that made the peninsula look like fine furniture. Though it’s mainly a breakfast bar, it often serves as auxiliary work space. In another kitchen remodel, Mark T. White of Kitchen Encounters in Annapolis, used another elegant hardwood to create the circular extension to a stone countertop and the top of a rectangular island. “The clients chose cherry because of its
color and grain,” he says. “The surfaces were lightly stained for color uniformity, then a top coat and sealer were applied - four coats in all. Of course we urged using cutting boards and trivets, to prevent possible damage from sharp knives or hot pots.” The flooring, which flows into a formal dining room and a casual family room, is oak with a light- to medium-brown stain. “In an open kitchen like this,” says White, “if we’d switched to tile or some other surface, the floor would’ve become an awkward interruption. And people prefer hardwood to tile or other kitchen flooring materials. It’s generally more comfortable on the legs and feet, and more forgiving if you drop something.” New York City interior designer John A. Buscarello is particularly proud of the wood-enhanced basement he completed in a Long Island home. Dampness was a potential problem because the space was mostly below grade. “The white oak floor is over a plywood subfloor that was built above a liquid vapor barrier applied to the
concrete,” Buscarello says. “Several coats of polyurethane were applied to the oak, so the surface is protected and can be cleaned with a damp or dry mop.” Architect Wright designed a wine cellar entirely of oak for a Southampton homeowner. With a floor of dark-stained oak and the walls and ceiling of limed oak, Wright confesses, “I’d never done a wine cellar where every surface was hardwood. When considering wood in areas like this, it’s important to make sure the homeowners know what to expect in terms of maintenance and durability. More than one in three say it's okay to walk away from mortgage By Broderick Perkins RealtyTimes.com
The majority of Americans, say it's "unacceptable" for homeowners to stop making their mortgage payments and abandon their homes, but more than a third, 36 percent, say "walking away" is okay.
A Pew Research Center study found that 59 percent believe it is wrong for homeowners to deliberately stop paying their mortgages and surrender their homes to the mortgage lender. Among those who said walking away is okay, 19 percent said it's acceptable outright
and an additional 17 percent volunteered that it depends on the circumstances. Either way, walking away can sink your credit score and come with an extra tax burden, not to mention the potential of a court suit. The survey, conducted May 11 to May
31, queried 2,967 adults and found more than one-in-five homeowners (21 percent) say they owe more on their mortgages than their home is worth. The "underwater" situation compels some homeowners to stop making their mortgage payments and let the bank fore-
close on their homes. Many homeowners, who can afford a mortgage payment, have nevertheless stopped making payments in what's called a "strategic default" and that's caused mortgage finance giant Fannie Mae, reeling from mounting losses, to sue them.

Alternatives to walking away, say a short sale, mortgage modification, a refinance (if possible), even an outright sale for less then the home is worth, are probably better ideas. According to RealtyTrac.com, in August, lenders foreclosed on 95,364 U.S. properties in August, the highest monthly total in the half-decade history of the report. Nearly half (48 percent) of all homeowners say the value of their home declined during the recession, and as a group they were more likely than those whose home did not lose value to say it's acceptable to bail out on a mortgage (20 percent vs. 14 percent). The study also found: • Twenty-five percent of renters said it was okay to walk away. • Nearly one-in-four adults (24 percent) who say their families are just able to pay their monthly bills or can't meet expenses said it's okay to stop paying a mortgage, compared with 14 percent of those who say they "live comfortably." Cleaning up after a storm? Follow these chain saw safety tips (ARA) - In the aftermath of a storm, yards are often littered with fallen trees, broken branches and scattered debris, leaving a giant mess for homeowners to clean up. Homeowners often handle much of the cleanup on their own, with tools they aren’t comfortable or experienced using. Remington(R), a leading manufacturer of battery and electric power tools, has compiled this safety check list for safe storm cleanup: • Assure the saw’s chain is properly tensioned before each use and all fasteners, controls and safety features are functioning properly. • Make sure the bar and chain are always lubricated to prevent the saw from wearing out or cutting poorly. Never let the oil reservoir run out or it will ruin your chain. • Start the saw while standing on the ground and always hold the handles securely. • Clear debris and small tree limbs from the saw’s chain path, and beware of nails and other metal before cutting.
• Avoid saw “kick back,” to prevent a serious chain saw injury. Never let the tip of the bar come in contact with anything. Always reference the operator’s manual for proper chainsaw operation. When cleaning up your yard after a storm, injury prevention is the most important factor to keep in mind. Follow these cleanup activities and safety tips once the storm subsides: • Check the area Walk around your property to inspect overall damage and take pictures as documentation. Check overhead for downed power lines and
hanging branches. Never touch a power line that appears to be down or hanging. Instead, call your power company immediately to report the problem. • Wear protective gear - Eliminate injuries by dressing appropriately using protective eyewear, hearing protection, durable gloves, waterproof steel toe boots and a hard hat. Avoid wearing loose clothing, jewelry or dangling objects that might become tangled in machinery. • Cleanup takes time After a severe storm it’s not uncommon for homeowners to be anxious to get things back to
normal quickly. Chain saw use is a high-risk activity and requires focus, awareness and patience to avoid injury or further damage. It may take days or months to clean up. Take your time and take breaks when you feel tired or your muscles are fatigued. • Eliminate hazardous areas - Use a chain saw to remove branches weakened by the storm but still attached. Examine upper canopies for irregular branches and remove these branches with extreme caution. Bowed or stressed branches can easily snap and cause
severe injury. Make sure to cut in a location that will eliminate exposure to unexpected breaking limbs. • Practice extreme caution. Never work with a saw on a ladder near a downed power line. Ask a family member or neighbor to be present while using a chain saw in case of an emergency, and maintain a safe distance of 50 feet from all bystanders. Fallen and leaning trees can be extremely dangerous if they have not yet come to rest on the ground. If you are unsure or inexperienced, call a certified arborist to remove trees safely and professionally.
If hazardous branches are overhanging a sidewalk or curb, set up cones to alert pedestrians of the hazard. • Use common sense - Prevent serious or fatal injuries, never use a chain saw when your balance is compromised, while up in a tree or on a roof. Don’t risk your safety, always allow a professional to do the job. If you’re researching the right tools for your type of yard cleanup and are considering electric and battery-powered options, two to consider are the Remington 18inch Lift & Dial Chain Saw, which is ideal for removing branches and foliage from trees after a storm.
