New Year’s resolution: Save water without sacrificing your shower (ARA) - Thinking about making a New Year’s resolution to continue to live a greener lifestyle? In addition to using energy-efficient appliances, carrying reusable shopping totes or recycling, consider reducing your dependency on one of the most precious resources - water. Try adopting new bathroom habits and updating your fixtures with products that will help you conserve water without sacrificing your experience. Saving water may turn out to be easier than it sounds, especially with a few simple tips. A recent eNation survey showed 83.7 percent of people take showers for the primary purpose of relaxing and meditating. Thirtyfour percent of the survey respondents said the “shower is my time for just focusing on me.” It represents a way to not only get clean, but to also escape from the stress of the day. However, those showers, relaxing and otherwise, account for approximately 17 percent of residential indoor water use in the United States, adding up to more than 1.2 trillion gallons of water each year nationwide,

according to the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency. It’s not likely you will want give up regular showers - for hygienic and emotional reasons. That’s why the shower is a space manufacturers have been studying for years. They’re working to create products that will continue to provide a satisfying shower experience while simultaneously saving water. “Our team is continuously researching new products and technologies to balance the competing needs of conserving water while giving the user a great shower experience,” says Bob Rodenbeck, director of research and development at Delta Faucet Company. “Simply restricting the flow of water doesn’t work. Bathers will either stay in the shower longer or find a way to remove the restrictor cap. The right solution has to help bathers save water without taking away from the luxurious and enjoyable experience of the shower.” Here are three easy tips to help you save water in the shower: • Learn to multitask: Let’s face it, sometimes we’re just standing in

the shower killing time. Whether we’re waiting for our conditioner to set in or slowly waking up under the warm water, we could be doing more. Next time you find yourself standing idle under the stream, reach for your toothbrush and toothpaste or mouthwash and freshen up your pearly whites. Men, hang a mirror in the shower and shave your face without accidentally nicking yourself. At the very least, hang your shirt or work outfit in the bathroom and let the steam from your hot shower release the wrinkles. That won’t help you cut back on water usage, per se, but it’ll save you time primping and the energy used to power your iron. • Install a WaterSense-labeled showerhead: Chances are, if your showerhead is more than a year or two old, it is probably not the most efficient model. More than eight out of 10 adults haven’t changed their showerhead in the past three years, according to the eNation survey. The EPA created the WaterSense Program to help homeowners conserve water. In 2010, it introduced

specifications that require a showerhead to flow at a rate of 2 gallons per minute (gpm) or less in order to be qualified as a WaterSense-labeled product. Protect your home by making minor mortar repairs (ARA) - With colder temperatures looming, now is the time to check your home for deteriorating mortar joints and loose mortar - and make any minor repairs before they turn into major headaches. Freezing rain, ice, snow and deicers, as well as freeze/thaw temperature cycles have the potential to cause costly damage. Unrepaired damage can allow water to seep in between cracked, loose mortar and cause interior wall damage. Minor cosmetic repairs to mortar can be made on any type of brick walls - including garden walls, a home’s exterior brick and chimneys. And making such repairs is easier than many homeowners realize all you need is a caulk gun and the right repair material. A sanded acrylic mortar repair caulk such as Quikrete Mortar Repair - will give the appearance of mortar in texture and color and is a more easily undertaken project for homeowners who are nervous about mixing mortar. The caulk’s sanded acrylic formula adheres to brick, block, stone and

Deciphering the technical lingo when buying a new TV (ARA) - Today’s TVs can do more than most of us could have ever imagined, from displaying 3D images to connecting to the Internet. But those advances in technology have also made it more complicated for the average person shopping for a new television. Are you having trouble telling the difference between LED and Plasma TVs? Perhaps you could use help with some of the technical terms used to describe the TVs right now. Richard Doherty, research director for The Envisioneering Group, has his finger on the pulse of today’s latest technologies and the challenges consumers face when shopping for a new TV. “The good news is that consumers have incredible options when it comes to buying HDTVs this season,” says Doherty. “But choosing the ideal one can get somewhat intimidating if you don’t know exactly what you are looking for and what works best in your home.” Here is a guide to help make sure the next TV you buy is the right one for you: Display types Understanding what your TV will most be used for will help you

decide what type of TV works best for you. Plasma or PDP (Plasma Display Panel): These screens use a combination of phosphors and plasma gas which lights up to create an image; similar to how a fluorescent light works. Many experts consider plasma displays the better choice for home theater enthusiasts because they provide deep black levels, extremely accurate color reproduction and a wider viewing angle than most LCD sets, so almost no matter where you’re sitting in the room, you can still enjoy a natural, vivid HDTV picture. Plasma will also appeal to people who watch a lot of fast action, such as sports due to their ultra-fast response time which creates smoother, more natural motion. LCD (Liquid-Crystal Display): This type of display uses a combination of liquid crystal cells a color filter and a fluorescent backlight unit to create the picture. LCD can produce a brighter picture which makes it a good choice for use in a bright room or areas where ambient light cannot be avoided. LCD TVs come in many sizes, ranging from 22-inch class TVs for the kitchen to 26- and 32-inch class

sets for the bedroom to 42-, 47- and 55-inch class sizes for your main viewing room. LED (LCD with LED Lighting): This type of LCD replaces fluorescent backlighting with an array of light emitting diodes (LEDs). This type of lighting enables the set to have a thinner profile (some as thin as 1 inch in depth), bright vivid picture and they are generally more energy efficient. LG offers advanced sets using Full LED backlighting which means improved contrast, a very high brightness level and a pristine picture, in an extremely thin and more energy efficient package. Picture quality Picture quality is a very broad term and can mean different things to different people. Here are a few key terms/features to be familiar with when buying your next TV: Resolution: Most

widescreen HDTVs will have a resolution of either 720p or 1080p. Often referred to as “Full HD”, 1080p resolution means a TV can accept and display incoming signals at full HD resolution from sources such as a BluRay Disc player. Utilizing over 2 million pixels to display the images provides the most clear and detailed picture available today. 720p resolution is also a high definition format, and can also accept the “Full HD” signals; however the picture will be displayed utilizing approximately 1 million pixels, still a stunning experience. Refresh rate: For sports fans, a fast refresh rate (expressed in hertz or Hz) is very important. This helps to reduce motion blur no matter how fast the action gets. Standard LED and LCD sets have a refresh rate of 60Hz and those equipped with LG TrueMotion,

offer faster speeds of 120Hz, 240Hz and 480Hz. Most Plasma TVs feature 600Hz sub-field driving and are great for watching fast-action sports. THX certification: THX, the organization that created the design and certification programs for cinemas, also has developed a program to certify picture quality. To receive this certification, TVs must undergo rigorous testing to prove that the television is able to recreate the vivid contrast, bright colors, and detail present when a movie leaves the director’s studio. Currently, LG is the only TV manufacturer in North America to have garnered 2D certification for an LED (LE8500 and LX9500) and its 3D Plasma is the first 3D TV to receive 3D Certification from THX (PX950). Advanced features Today’s TVs come with other incredible features and understanding everything a TV can do will certainly help steer you in the right direction when its time to buy your next TV. 3DTV: The ability to deliver HDTV’s supreme detail has been around for more than decade now, but some of the latest TVs also are 3D capable. More stations are

jumping on the trend, as ESPN will broadcast a number of football games this season in 3D and more and more movies will become available on 3D Blu-ray discs. 3D is available on Plasma and LCD screens and LG’s PX950 Plasma 3D TV is the first ever 3D TV to achieve the THX certification for picture quality. Five fabulous ways to bring nature indoors for the holidays (ARA) - Tucking your garden in for the winter doesnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t have to put an end to enjoying the beauty of your landscape. Freshen up this holiday season with touches of nature to enhance your home and spirit. Follow these five easy steps to bring nature inside your home this holiday season: 1. Soothe the senses: Make a special potpourri incorporating some garden favorites and traditional ingredients of the season. Look outdoors for items that stand out: pinecones, acorns, seed pods, dried flowers, small leaves, bits of evergreen. You can also look to the kitchen cabinet for familiar scents and flavors of the holiday: cinnamon sticks, whole cloves, whole nutmeg, star anise, orange peel, dried apple slices, cranberries and lemon peel. Be creative - what do the holidays mean to you? Once the ingredients have been collected, be sure they are dry. If necessary, bake at 150 degrees for five to six hours to dry thoroughly (especially recommended for items like apple

slices, cranberries, orange and lemon peels), or use a food dehydrator. Then, combine ingredients together and add essential oils (available online, in craft stores and organic markets). Place in a glass bowl or a sachet to give a room or drawer a fresh new scent. Package a cup of potpourri in a mesh bag to give as a gift,

and tie with a colorful ribbon. You may also use your potpourri in a simmering pot by placing 1 cup potpourri in 1 cup water in a small saucepan on the back burner of your stove. Simmer for 20-30 minutes to fill your home with the festive scents of the holidays. 2. Perk up those potted plants: Give indoor plants a holiday makeover this year.

Deck the halls: Your garden may be in hibernation for the winter, but it can still bring plenty of holiday joy. Evergreen boughs, magnolia leaves, poppy pods, dried hydrangeas, acorns, pinecones and oak leaves are just a few of the interesting things found in your garden that could be used to make a wreath or centerpiece. Start with a foam frame or base and layer on the different textures while paying attention to the varying colors. Paint some items, such as leaves or pinecones, in gold or silver. Add a garland made of cranberries, popcorn and orange peel for additional color. A live tree is another great way to bring nature inside for the holidays. Potted or balled evergreens are available at most nurseries this time of year in varying sizes and shapes. Ask at the nursery for proper

care instructions so that it may be transplanted into the garden to increase greenscapes rather than adding to a landfill. 5. Spice things up: Enhance holiday fare and start an herb garden on a warm, sunny window ledge. Grow fresh rosemary and sage to perk up the holiday turkey. Give sprigs of flavorful herbs or bouquet garni to the foodies in your life. Use twine to attach snips of rosemary, thyme, sage and bay leaves together for a flavorful combination that is sure to seduce their senses. This year, when preparing for the holidays, maximize your landscape by bringing the outdoors in.
