Especially in cold areas, turning on the fireplace during an open house can be very attractive. However, real wood-burning fireplaces can be messy and leave a smoky odor in the air that can be too strong for some potential buyers. And if you opt for fake logs, well, they can sometimes look too fake. But a growing trend is to fill the fireplace with recycled, reflective glass—it's clean, easy to install in a

You'll also need to use specially manufactured glass. Do not attempt to put ordinary glass in the fireplace— you'll get an unwanted effect—glass can come
popping out into the room as it heats up. The reflective glass looks great and is easy to work with but it can be costly. Installing the right kind of burner (similar to one you'd use for fake logs) and material overlay will allow you to have variable flames that shoot up from beneath the glass— giving it a more realistic look. Note, that with modifications there are many codes for gas fireplaces, so be sure you understand the codes for your

residual soot doesn't fall onto your glass. Also, be sure to scrape the walls of the fire box to get rid of any heavy build-up. Fireplaces Plus explained to me that the trick to saving money is to use sand and small lava rocks as the base layer underneath the glass. This fills up the fireplace and then only a thin layer of the glass is needed to create the unique look. The glass can be very expensive. Depending on your color selection it can cost $12 a pound or more. If you have a large fireplace, that's going to add up very quickly. Once you've cleaned the fireplace out you can paint and then install your burner. After it is properly secured in place
and the paint is completely dry (read the directions on the paint, the time period varies), give it a test to see how the flames will look. Next you can begin to layer your base. Start with the sand. If you're using a burner that has a tray, fill the tray with sand, covering the burner pipe. The holes for the burner should be facing down toward the tray. The gas will emit through various areas of the sand creating natural-looking variable flames as opposed to an artificial appearing
straight line of fire. Next take the lava rocks and start at the back of the fireplace, layering the rocks around the burner to hide it and the pipe. The lava rocks should come all the way to the front of the fireplace. Now, you're ready to put a layer of glass on top. Cover all the lava rocks and the sand with the glass. If you want to get really creative, you can make special patterns. Fireplaces Plus says you can buy sheet metal and stick it into the burner sides to create a rectangle, for instance,
by adding a side. Then you can use another color glass if you want the shape to stand out. Light your fire and

Find the right tools for fighting winter weather (ARA) - Homeowners are accustomed to using salt to clear ice from sidewalks and driveways in the winter. But you might be surprised to learn that there are different types of salt, and that each type has different melting properties. Rock salt is the old standby. It is the most economical choice and easily melts ice in temperatures down to 5 degrees Fahrenheit. Calcium chloride is another common ice-melting salt. It works well in colder temperatures, but it requires special handling to prevent harm to skin and delicate interior surfaces when it is tracked inside on shoes. Magnesium chloride may be the best salt to use in very cold temperatures. It is effective in temperatures down to

It also produces minimal residue, so it is less likely to be tracked indoors, and if it is, it is easily cleaned up with water. “All ice melters work in basically the same way, by using something known as ‘freezing point depression,’ basically meaning that the point at which water freezes has been lowered,” says Jerry Poe, technical director for North American Salt Company, which markets a number of magnesium chloride products in its line of Safe Step residential ice melters. Poe says magnesium chloride works better in colder temperatures than traditional rock salt, making it the right choice in extreme weather. In fact, many highway depart-
ments rely on magnesium chloride to keep roads and highways safe and traffic moving. Because magnesium chloride is a liquid in its natural form, it dissolves quickly to make a brine. The brine spreads through the melting ice, breaking the ice’s bond with the driveway or sidewalk. It also works for longer periods of time compared to many other ice melters. Pet owners may find magnesium chloride especially helpful when clearing ice and snow because it doesn’t burn paws that have become cracked in cold temperatures. Magnesium chloride flakes also dissolve so quickly that they don’t solidify, so the ice melter is less likely to clump in fur between your pet’s pads. North American

With everything in the news about how to make your home more energy efficient, it’s easy to become bewildered when thinking about all the improvements you could make. But there’s no need to worry, as you don’t have to make your home into a model for green living all at once. Lifestyle experts were then invited to live in The Green House for three days, test its environmentally friendly products and experience the benefits of eco-friendly living. The main takeaway from The Green House project is that there are a variety of steps you

buy a gas-sipping hybrid. Small: Take public transportation. Better yet, where possible, bike or walk on one trip each week where you would usually drive. Living room Big: Buy an ENERGY STAR-rated TV that will save you money when it’s both on and off. With very low standby and on-mode power consumption, some new LED HDTVs from LG use only about 7 cents of electricity a day for average viewing of six hours daily. Small: Unplug your DVD player or other accessories when they are not in use, especially when leaving for an extended time like a vacation. Hail the mighty plant (ARA) - There should be a “take a plant to work” day. And while you’re at it, you should keep one on your desk. Or, better yet, have two or more in your office and for every room in your home for cleaner, fresher air. Most people spend 90 percent of their lives inside, where the indoor air they breathe contains at least 10 times more pollutants than the outdoors, according to the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA). Instead of wearing a mask to work or around your home, there’s a natural solution: indoor houseplants. Plants filter the very air you breathe round the clock from common pollutants and continuously release oxygen and moisture in homes and offices. “Plants act as the ‘lungs of the earth’ by giving off oxygen and taking in carbon dioxide,” says former NASA research scientist Dr. B.C. Wolverton, author of “How to Grow Fresh Air” and co-author with Kozaburo Takenaka of “Plants, Why You Can’t Live Without Them.” After decades of research, Wolverton asserts that beside aesthetics, research reveals that the mere
presence of plants has been proven to “lessen environmental pollution, increase labor productivity and reduce the cost of health care.” What’s in the air? Modern life depends on technology, but ordinary products like paints, tobacco smoke, printer inks and even carpets hold hidden dangers that plants can help reduce. Today, there are over 80,000 synthetic chemicals that emit off-gases. Formaldehyde is one of the leading chemical compounds found in indoor air emissions and is a component in paper products, paints, upholstery, drapes and pressed wood products, Wolverton notes. A recent study published in the British Medical Association’s journal, Thorax, found that “children exposed to higher levels of VOCs were four times more likely to suffer from asthma than children who were not.” Plant magic Plants improve air quality through their natural “filtering” ability. Wolverton found that indoor houseplants absorb up to 87 percent of VOCs like ammonia, formaldehyde and benzene found in many homes and offices. And certain indoor
houseplants ‘clean’ the air every 24 hours. How? They absorb toxins into the leaves and root zone where they’re turned into nutrients. Some tropical plants actually suppress airborne mold. Researchers at Washington State University studied the impact of indoor houseplants on dust reduction in office spaces. When indoor houseplants were present, dust particulates were reduced by 20 percent compared to rooms without plants. Working day and night Some of the hardest working plants are the peace lilies, ferns, palms and spider plants. Mike Rimland of Costa Farms, the largest indoor houseplant producer in North America, recommends epiphytic bromeliads and orchids, particularly in your bedroom. These natural botanical air purifiers make perfect bedroom buddies to refresh and beautify your room for a truly healthy, restful night’s sleep. Rimland’s favorites are anthuriums. “They come in an array of colors, with stunning blooms that last up to 13 weeks, are easy to
grow, freshen the air and add exotic beauty to your bedroom,” he says. Bring a plant to work Put a plant on your desk and feel happier, enjoy better health and be more productive. Wolverton recommends office workers should have at least one plant in their “personal breathing space” where most of the work is done to effectively remove indoor pollutants. Wolverton suggests two areca palms or lady palms should remove sufficient VOCs to significantly improve the indoor air quality in a room. Snake plants, broad sword ferns and rubber plants are among the top 10 air purifiers recommended by experts. They’re easy to grow, are natural humidifiers and remove airborne chemicals. Other green heroes are chrysanthemums, Gerbera daisies and spider plants. Location, location, location “Which plant you choose, and where you place your plants is important to reap optimum benefits,” says Rimland. Consider the light, humidity, and temperature of your indoor spaces to determine
the best choices for your home. Put a Majesty Palm in your living room, fern in the family room and peace lilies in the kitchen. Hardwood finishes are more eco-friendly than ever (ARA) - Finishes are vital to protecting the beauty and performance of hardwood cabinetry, flooring and millwork. And while these will always be important considerations for today’s consumers, the health of their families and overall environmental health are important as well. So before you visit the local home center, the American Hardwood Information Center, www.HardwoodInfo.c om, suggests you contemplate the following “finishing facts.” Whether purchasing factory-finished products or engaging in a do-it-yourself project; be knowledgeable. Ask questions. Read labels. The key words are “volatile organic compounds,” commonly referred to as VOCs, usually listed in grams per liter. Lower VOC content products are more environmentally friendly and pose lower health risks. According to EPA standards, to qualify as a zeroVOC finish, VOC content cannot exceed 5 grams per liter, and low-VOC finishes cannot contain more than 200 grams per liter. environmentally friendly products, should be aware of VOC content. While paints, stains and other coatings can be emitters of VOCs, they are not alone. VOCs are emitted from many other products found in the home including carpeting, electronics, cosmetics, plastics, cleaning supplies, tobacco products and more. Thanks to advances in wood-coating technology, many of today’s finishes are better than ever. Zeroand low-VOC finishes deliver the same quality, durability and performance as their predecessors. In the not-so-distant past, it was considered practi-
cally impossible to make high-quality finishes that did not emit VOCs, both during their application and throughout their service life. But that was then. Some manufacturers argue that today’s low-VOC finishes are even better than old solvent-based products. They require fewer coatings, provide equal performance and do it in a healthier way. Most zero-and lowVOC finishes are water-based. Because they contain no solvents, they are safe for people and the environment, and they give off virtually no odor. They’re also easier to use because they dry quickly, and
clean-up can be tackled with plain soap and water. Disposal is simple, too. Most manufacturers have online calculators to help you determine exactly how much finish to buy, but if you end up with extra paint, stain or sealer, there’s no need to worry. Because of their natural ingredients, water-based finishes do not need to be taken to a hazardous waste center. Simply let open containers sit in a wellventilated area, and once they solidify, place them in the trash. Of course, you could always leave the lid on and pass the finishes along to a neighbor or charity organi-
zation. Beyond traditional low- and no-VOC finishes, consumers can select from an increasing array of natural paints, stains and sealers. These products, which are made with organic ingredients such as water, plant extracts and minerals are naturally VOCfree. They give off almost no smell and, like most natural products, they are unlikely to trigger allergies or other sensitivities. Not a do-it-yourselfer? Keep in mind that it’s hard to go wrong with a prefinished or factory-finished product. Most manufacturers now use ultraviolet (UV) light to quickly cure several coats of low- or no-VOC urethane finish. Some hardwood flooring manufacturers even add small aluminum oxide chips directly into the UVcured finish, which dramatically increases the floor’s durability and life. But if you are a do-ityourselfer preparing to finish hardwood cabinets, trim or flooring, you can choose from two basic types of finishes: those that penetrate the wood and those that sit on the wood’s surface.
Penetrating stains and finishes do as their name suggests: they penetrate wood to form a protective seal. Stains soak in to provide color, and a wax coating gives a lowgloss satin sheen. These finishes include linseed, tung and specialty oils. They require special cleaning products like solvent-based waxes, buffing pastes or cleaning liquids, especially for wax-finished floors. Surface finishes include a stain covered by a protective layer or topcoat. Because of their durability and resistance to moisture, these finishes - which encompass polyurethanes, paints, shellac, varnish, lacquer and wax - are easier to maintain and more popular than ever. And advances in wood-coating technology have made them more environmentallyfriendly.
