...is when most expatriates need support to handle the challenges of everyday life.

Relationship Issues
I definitely can relate to the hibernation theory. I do it all the time. Just can’t work up the energy to do anything to meet people. It’s terrible and if this continues I fear I’ll go back home.
I worry a lot about finances, visas, finding love and starting a family. I wonder if it would be easier to get on with life if I were in the States. How do you know when to pack it in and head back?
Happy global people never use the word ‘expat’……What gets you through times of loneliness, frustration, suffering? Expats, what coping strategies you have found in your travels?
When you take the leap and move abroad there are the obvious hurdles to jump over. But working out new systems and processes is only the half of it when you have a different language to contend with as well.
I could not really conceive of why he was so enthusiastic about being in this new city, and he was disappointed that my feelings were negative. I counted on him to understand me in this new life but he just did not 'get it'.
After the relocation dust settles….. The most important time for expat support is post-arrival and during assignment. For a number of reasons this is precisely the time that support for expats tends to be minimal. Our online coaching support for expats is designed to be “on site” for the long term.
JigsawBox
We use an online platform powered by JigsawBox to provide content, coaching exercises and coaching interaction for our clients.
Coaching, not training
The Kind of Support We Offer
Cross-cultural training and coaching are two different things. Both are important and should be provided to expats.
We start with a 30 minute 1:1 Skype conversation, so we can get to know each other.
Cultural training is the process that allows the expat to better understand how the culture and country he comes from effects everything from the way he communicates, approaches time, work on teams, relates to authority and the value he places on relationships.
THEN – Unlimited access to ALL of our support modules
Here are some of the topics we cover in our modules. We have more than 25 modules at the moment, and are always adding more.
We’ll have regular Expat Open Line calls so you can talk about anything with us and draw on the expertise of other expats who will join the calls.
• Leaving Well to Enter Well
We have an exclusive online forum where you can ask advice from other expats.
• Culture Shock • Bridging the Language Gap
If you should want more 1:1 personal support, we offer Skype, telephone or face-to-face (if possible).
• Staying Connected With Your Partner • Making New Friends • Creating New Family Traditions • Setting Goals • Learning to Laugh • Time Management • Using Your Roots to Connect – The Art of Nostalgia • Learn to Say Goodbye Well • Manage Expectations • Keep a Journal to Relieve Stress
When you want your coach to have input on a particular question or exercise, click the ‘submit to coach button’. Your coach will get back to you within 24 hours! That’s the everyday part.
Coaching does not intend to provide answers; coaching assumes that the client has the resources within themselves and can find the resources in the surroundings that will help them through the stress that is felt. The fundamental coaching question is: what steps are you going to take now? Our modules, which include some content to teach and instruct, are also full of questions and exercises to help the expat find his or her own solutions. We are coaches!
AND: we have a smartphone APP! Your Android and iPhone will connect you with us for exclusive member content.
A look under the hood... MODULE CONTENT
When an expat logs in to a module, she sees a short amount of content designed to provide helpful information. This internet based content allows us to use the resources of internet to provide text, mp3 audio, video and links to helpful websites.
A look under the hood... COACHING QUESTIONS
Under the content are a number of coaching-oriented questions or exercises. We don’t give answers to clients we ask questions that probe and help them find the resources they need to move forward.
Now comes the unique part! Now comes the most exciting and unique part: if someone is working on a module and wants input from a coach, they can just click the ‘submit to coach’ button. We instantly get an email that John or Alice would like some input and interaction. Our commitment is to respond online within 24 hours. That’s the everyday part..
So if something stressful happened on a Tuesday morning at the market, Alice could tell us about it in a module, click the button, and we would respond within 24 hours (usually quicker). We might suggest that Alice try something to relieve her stress at the market and get back to us when she has tried that. So Alice goes back the next morning, has another experience, and reflects back to us in the module that afternoon. We can respond to that. So a conversation develops that is rooted in real-time experience, and we can be there as a daily support to our clients as needed and desired.

Why we qualify for an EMMA Best Family Support Program
Most Innovative Use of Technology in Global Mobility We have already mentioned that on-site and on-going coaching support for expats is not getting the attention it should. On reason for that is we tend to think of effective coaching as only faceto-face, in person or via telephone or Skype. That is costly, inefficient, and cannot be provided on a daily basis when it is really most needed.
We all know that the wellbeing of the expatriate family as a whole is a significant factor to ensure a positive expatriate experience and protect the financial investment made in an expatriate assignment.
Online coaching has been proven to be just as effective as 1:1 coaching. This allows us to address the key need for on-site coaching using efficient, effective and economical internet tools.
Our online, on-the-spot coaching support can easily be employed for every member of the family: the employee, the expat partner, and even the children if they are old enough.
But we do more than just online modules: we also provide regular open line calls and 1:1 coaching via Skype when desired. In this way we offer a comprehensive functionality for our clients.
Each family member can get personalized coaching support in the circumstances that he or she faces.
Our online platform and contact methods are user-friendly: all one needs is an internet connection.
Specific modules cover the partner relationship and the needs of children.
We operate on a low monthly subscription basis, so we can provide excellent value for money. Clients can benefit from the online modules on their own, or schedule 1:1 coaching sessions at added coast as needed. So the costs are based on the needs of the client.
We are present for the long term: as family members grow and circumstances change, we can be a trusted partner and coach. We believe in the family, and that’s why our support is focused on the everyday life of the everyday expat family.
Client feedback I love your site and the way you go about helping people. I love that you bring in philosophers, poets, musicians and so much more to get your points across. It seems to be a deeper way of connecting with people. Cathy Heyne, Living Abroad LLC Just have to say, I LOVE your guys’ support platform. The whole time I was going through it, I was practically kicking myself for not utilizing you guys last fall! And even now, when I feel very at ease here in London, I still found the question portions therapeutic. I really liked how you had the mixture of communication modes with the videos, inspirational quotes, webinars, etc. Kept it engaging! Katherine M., London I have been doing the modules faithfully since becoming a member and I find them very therapeutic and helpful. They get me thinking about so many different aspects of this new life I am leading and are really helping me work through my anxiety. I get feedback on my modules in less than 24 hours and getting that additional perspective is really key. I feel better just knowing that Norman is there if I need some help. I am so grateful to have happened upon the Expat Everyday Support Center - it really is an outstanding resource for anyone living abroad and I cannot recommend it highly enough." Shannon G, Ireland

About Us Together we have more than 50 years of expatriate living under our belts, so we’ve been a lot of places and done a lot of things. Including making our mistakes and enjoying our successes. What is most important to you is that we have thought about it…. Norman Viss holds B.A. and Master’s degrees, with majors in cross-cultural and urban studies and theology. He has many years of broad international experience working with people from a wide variety of cultures, including a 10 year span of living in Nigeria, West Africa, and 22 years in the Netherlands. In 2009 he completed the Certified Professional Coach Program at the International Coach Academy and is accredited by the International Coach Federation as Associate Certified Coach (ACC). Norman knows what it is like to deal with isolation and find his way into new community: as a young man working in isolated villages in the Nigerian savannah, in sophisticated Amsterdam, learning Dutch and building community in a post-modern culture, raising three TCK children and sending them off to school and life. Carol VanDyken has lived more than two decades in the Caribbean, Asia and Africa. With a background in Human Resources (B.A. Human Resources and Business), Carol currently works on the development team of an international non-profit organization and has been trained and led seminars on interpersonal relationships through IT Partners. Things Carol likes to think about: What it’s been like to live far from the familiar; the implications for my marriage to have lived outside our home culture and transition between cultures, not to mention how it has shaped our children; how I have coped with always being ‘different’ in a culture in looks, lifestyle, humor, interests and how to develop friendships even within those limitations; how to help my children be comfortable with the background they have had growing up and how they now face the feeling of being strangers in a culture they should call their own.
