school of metaphysics fall 2017 instructor: Peter P. Goché location: Governor’s Island, New York with Weilun Chen and Jiayu Dong
An investigation on material and immaterial practices, this School of Metaphysics studies the relationship between the physical and metaphysical world. According to Heidegger, the physical world is the area where humans dwell while the metaphysical world consists of the intangible elements of life. Because humans understand abstract concepts through concrete forms, this project uses phenomenology to heighten the participant’s senses in order to provoke metaphysical reactions.
drawing + wood analysis The initial drawing studies the relationship between the tangible and intangible. Varying line types and layers of medium create dense areas that are connected by elongated lines. The space between the dense areas forms a tenuous condition which describes the atmospheric relationships within the boundaries of the site. The distortion and compression of burnt wood creates delicate openings between layers and provides a tenuous spatial relationship that are directly applied to the building.

site The site is located on the northwestern side of Governor’s Island (approximately 800 yards from the southern tip of Manhattan Island) looking out toward lower Manhattan and The Statue of Liberty. The site map depicts the water as solid leaving the island as a void separated physically from the surrounding city.

proposal The building, represented as a burnt piece of wood, is placed along the edge of the island where the topographic lines conform to the outline of the wood. The progression through the building consciously hides or reveals elements beyond the site. At the core of the school is a fissure that reflects both light and the sound of the crashing waves into the building.

The individual session rooms are uniquely designed to control the participant’s relationship to the sky, city, and water, for example, by blocking one’s view to the city but allowing sound to come into the space. Because the participant is attentive to their present state of being and removed from their known perception of their surroundings, they are able to transcend into the metaphysical realm.

Centered at the intersection of three existing trails in Inis Grove Park, this chapel emphasizes the community of the Christian Church through the Holy Sacrament of Baptism. While each of the approaches to the chapel is unique, the concrete walls and metal roofing act as guides for both water and people to the central baptismal fount.
water flow Rainwater travels along channels in the concrete or on the roof and collects in the center baptismal fount. When the fount has a few inches of water at the top, it serves to remind people of their baptism. For an official service, the central tube displaces the water for an immersion baptism.

This design makes an ordinary material, wood, iconic through repetition and layering, similar to Andy Warhol’s technique in Orange Car Crash Fourteen Times. Similarly to the painting, this project uses the contrast between chaos and rest as an organizational concept for the multi-use housing complex in comparison to one of the most dangerous intersections in New York City. Through this approach to design, we show the advantages of timber in both construction and experiential design.

gikondo wetland fall 2017 instructor: Marwan Ghandour location: Kigali, Rwanda
Kigali, Rwanda has been growing at a rapid rate since the genocide in 1994, both in population size and economically. Because of the urban growth, the city created a master plan in 2013 to regulate construction and restore the wetlands. This project is located on an industrial park that the government plans to relocate in order to restore the wetland. The proposal is an architectural solution based on an analysis of the surrounding community’s needs.
community scale In the area around the Gikondo Industrial Park there is limited access to water and sewage systems as well as few destinations for people to go for recreation. The community hub along the major highway attracts the people within the watershed and provides a central location for the surrounding community to gather for hygienic, relaxation, and educational purposes.

neighborhood scale Retention ponds that collect and filter rainwater offer local residents access to clean drinking and washing water. The laundry dock is sunken into the water to allow a person to stand while washing their clothes. At the edge of the wetland, the sewage treatment ponds serve the neighborhood through a pipe system sized to the specific quantity of waste. After washing their clothes on the dock, the locals hang their laundry on drying racks that have adjustable roofs that allow for drying in rain or sun.

sulfur extraction facility fall 2016 instructor: Rob Whitehead location: Pomezia, Italy with Paavan Joshi and Binhan Tang The sulfur extraction facility in Pomezia, Italy is part of Renzo Piano’s early industrial project collection [1966]. Piano experimented with intricate facade design, incorporation of natural light, and lightweight structures in order to create a workspace that not only functions but enhances the individual’s working life. The lattice lamella structure maximizes the volume of space, minimizes the material usage, and shortens the duration of construction. The individual fiberglass panels are portable to accomodate for the constantly moving mining process.

I joined 25 of my classmates at Iowa State’s College of Design in Rome to study the architectural layers of the city. We spent time drawing, walking, and traveling to significant landmarks across Rome and Italy. Our projects include interventions along the Aurelian Wall and Aqua Alessandrino as well as a workshop in collaboration with students and professors from Roma Tre University.
aurelian wall: urban lantern with Anna Bednarko and Sarah Schneider
This project uses the mass of the existing stair in the Aurelian Wall to create a companion stair at the corner of the wall. The new stair is formed by removing the corner and then stamping an inversion of the original stair into the fallen earth. A simulation of the original stair, materialized in white SmartWrap, cantilevers above the new passage and acts as an urban lantern that connects the existing upper park with the new lower park.

Starting in May 2015 working on the Health Care Team and most recently the Housing Team, I collaborated with many skilled teammates and clients on a variety of projects inside the office and on site. My experience includes all steps of the design process from spacial programming to preparing construction documents. Through the 25+ projects I worked on, I am proficient in AutoCAD, Revit, SketchUp, Enscape, LayOut and Bluebeam.
