BELOVEDS IN CHRIST Poetry for summertime 2016, hopefully to provide time and space to weigh words and savor wisdom, such as: “Little Summer Poem Touching The Subject of Faith” by Mary Oliver Every summer I listen and look under the sun’s brass and even into the moonlight, but I can’t hear Anything, I can’t see anything -not the pale roots digging down, nor the green stalks muscling up, nor the leaves deepening their damp pleats, nor the tassels making, nor the shucks, nor the cogs. And still, every day, the leafy fields grow taller and thicker -green gowns lofting up in the night, showered with silk. And so, every summer, I fail as a witness, seeing nothing – I am deaf too to the tick of the leaves, the tapping of downwardness from the banyan feet -all of it happening beyond any seeable proof, or hearable hum. And, therefore, let the immeasurable come. Let the unknowable touch the buckle of my spine. Let the wind turn in the trees, and the mystery hidden in the dirt

Honoring Our 2016 Graduates
Don Haynes graduated with distinction from California Marymount University in Palos Verdes/San Pedro on May 7th with a B.A. in media studies. His work making promotional videos for the Port of Los Angeles continues. Don’s proud parents are Frances and Peter Haynes. Elisabetta Impagliazzo graduated from University of Tulsa with a B.S. in Nursing. Elisabetta will start work in September at children's Hospital, Los Angeles. Her garndmother, Dr. Anna Maria Ballin. is mighty proud! Elise Caldwell will graduate from Woodbridge High School June 2016. Elise was Track and Field Captain and Varsity Hurdler. She will be attending Santa Barbara City College, majoring in Communications. Proud parents are Susan and Stephen Caldwell. Best wishes to our daughter, Emily Faller, who graduates from JSerra Catholic High School this coming Saturday. She will be attending Franklin and Marshall in Lancaster, Pennsylvania this coming fall. Jill and Jan Faller, proud parents. Kathryn Fukuda will graduate June 8th from University High School, Irvine. Her proud grandmother, Frances Fukuda, said Katie will attend UC Riverside and major in Computer Science. Dr. and Mrs. William Fukuda are the proud parents. Eva Wierzbicki graduates from Orange County School of the Arts on June 16th. She will attend USC this fall, majoring in Cinematic Arts. Susan K. Brown is Eva’s proud mother. Cat Annerl leaves Middle School to be a Sea King at Corona del Mar High School. Anne Conover is her proud Mom. Matthew Ryan Kiper will be graduating from Mariners Christian School in June and will be attending Orange Lutheran High School in the fall. Kitty and Michael Kiper are his proud parents.

CLERICAL DETECTIVES by Norris Battin
M
y yearly review of the clerical detectives’ liturature found little new to report on in 2016. So I thought I’d give us a quick look back a copuple of years to the work of a most popular contemporary writer of clerical mysteries, Julia-Spoenses Fleming. Fleming is a New York Times bestselling author and the winner of the Agatha, Anthony, Macavity, Dilys, Barry, Nero Wolf, and Gumshoe Awards. Here’s a synopsis of two of her latest, “Through Evil Days” and “One Was a Soldier” taken from her webpage www.juliaspenserfleming.com. “New York Times bestseller Julia Spencer-Fleming returned with the eighth novel in her much-loved series: “Through the Evil Days” which was published November 5, 2013. “Friday, January 9th, A middle-of-thenight call wakes Episcopal priest Clare Fergusson and her husband, Police Chief Russ van Alstyne: a farmhouse has erupted in flames, killing the couple sleeping indoors. A tragedy for the Adirondack mountain town of Millers Kill. “But a darker, more evil current quickly emerges. “Clare and Russ's belated honeymoon at an isolated lakeside cabin is meant to give them time to adjust to Clare's unexpected pregnancy. Instead, they learn the dead couple had not been alone – their eight-year-old foster child, Mikayla, has disappeared from the wreckage without a trace. A recent transplant recipient, Mikayla will sicken and die without proper medication. “With the police force overburdened, Officers Hadley Knox and Kevin Flynn must set aside their tangled emotions in order to work together. They have eight days to find Mikayla, after which no drugs will help. Clare Fergusson series, offers this adventure: “On a warm September evening in the Millers Kill community center, five veterans sit down in rickety chairs to try to make sense of their experiences in Iraq. What they will find is murder, conspiracy, and the unbreakable ties that bind them to one another and their small Adirondack town. “The Rev. Clare Fergusson wants to forget the things she saw as a combat helicopter pilot and concentrate on her relationship with Chief of Police Russ Van Alstyne. MP Eric McCrea needs to control the explosive anger threatening his job as a police officer. Will Ellis, high school track star, faces the reality of life as a double amputee. Orthopedist Trip Stillman is denying the extent of his traumatic brain injury. And bookkeeper Tally McNabb wrestles with guilt over the in-country affair that may derail her marriage. “But coming home is harder than it looks. One vet will struggle with drugs and alcohol. here are many opportunities this summer to participate in Adult Christian Education. First of all, in Sundays at Ten, The Summer Travel Series continues and is again hosted by Ruth Poole. A revisit from last summer ’s successful presentation, parishioners are taking turns talking about their overseas adventures. Some of the many unique experiences this summer include Peggy Maradudin and Russia, Rebecca Welch and Macedonia, and Norris Battin in Brazil. This series will run through Sunday, August 29th. This Adult Sunday School class meets in the Davis Library after morning worship. Pick up a cup of coffee and share in the fellowship. Please see Ruth Poole or Melinda Rader for more details. Inklings in Ordinary Time Book Study and 1+1 Dinner Fellowship will meet in the Conference Room on Wednesday, July 13 and the Davis Library on August 10, 5pm-6:30pm. This book study group is discussing C.S. Lewis’ “The Four Loves.” Bring your own sandwich and enough to share with one other person. Purchase of the book is not necessary for participation. All are welcome. Childcare provided. Please see Susan Caldwell or Anne Conover for more details. The Bible Challenge meets on the 4th Sunday of the month in the Davis Library. Currently, this Bible study group is reading “The Four Loves” by C.S. Lewis (along with the Inklings). Summer Adult Ed from page 4 Women’s Fellowship meets on the last Tuesday of the month at 7pm, in the home of Beth Bianchi. They will continue to meet through the summer months of July and August. They are enjoying the resources of ChurchNext, our online religious education program. In reflection, during the months of May and June, Women’s Fellowship listened to “Growing Old, With Grace, Not Glamor,” by speaker Reverend Barbara Crafton. Crafton is an Episcopal Priest, spiritual director and noted author. In the segment on “Growing Old, with Grace, Not Glamor,” Crafton highlights the transition times in growing older and encourages women to perhaps let go of some ministries from their younger years and embrace some new ministries. Rev’d Crafton also suggests that women look for opportunities to share their wisdom. Barbara Black, a Women’s Fellowship participant, had this to say about the segment that they watched. “As I listened to what she (Barbara Crafton) had to say, and applied it to my own life and what I was doing now, I thought about how I am using the tools and talents that I have. I thought about what I am doing in a different way.” Besides viewing courses from ChurchNext, Women’s Fellowship is considering the outreach and mission work of “Laundry Love,” which is a ministry that helps those in financial need get their laundry washed for free. Laundry Love is being considered as a modern “ foot-washing” ministry. Saint Michael’s is hoping to partner with other Episcopal Churches in the Deanery to fulfill this mission. our Communications Commission has, over the past several years, experimented with various approaches to social media at St. Mike’s. You can see a summary of our current status in the ad adjacent to this column. We now have two parish Facebook pages -- one devoted to current and upcoming parish events called SMAACDM and the other, The Daily Mike, which reports news about the Diocese of Los Angeles, The Episcopal Church, and the Anglican Communion and supports our Adult Christian Education and Worship activities. On a recent day Daily Mike published, along with some featured news stories, links to the day’s morning and evening prayer services (sometime these links include hymns from choirs around the world), the day’s Forward Day by Day meditation, News of Interest from the Anglican Communion, the daily update from the Episcopal News Service, and Daily Prayer from Forward Movement.Weekly, we publish the link to the diocese’s Update. If you haven’t already, I hope you’ll go to www.facebook.com/ SMAAdailymike, like the page, and follow us every day. There is also a link on the Daily Mike Facebook page to a daily online news paper also called The Daily Mike. You can also find it here: http://bit.ly/ DailyMike. This “paper” covers not only Anglican Communion and TEC events, but also developments in religion around the world. The most important upgrade to our social media program is our new webpage www.stmikescdm.ladio cese.org which Clyde Dodge worked diligently to complete. While much improved from our previous site, the new site is still a work in progress and it will evolve over the years as we attempt to stay current with developments in web communication. Note that the new web address is different from the previous one and that as of this writing, the old site, for technical reasons, cannot forward to the new one. So please put that old address in the memory hole and bookmark the new one.
We do not have a Twitter feed. Not only are we not sure how to best use it in the parish, but we don’t have the time within the committee to administer it.

Would you like to review how we worship? “Customs & Practices in the Episcopal Church” is a pamphlet you need. To summarize the contents: Worship is participatory, biblical, and focused on the altar. The wearing of vestments is described. Different customs are observed – standing, kneeling, sitting, bowing one’s head, making the sign of the cross, greeting one another at the Peace, etc. Congregations enter in silence and observe a time of quiet before the worship service begins. Some people choose to kneel and pray after the service is concluded. “There is no right or wrong way as long as God is the focal point of all we do. Customs can enhance our experience of worship, bringing a greater awareness of the wonder and mystery of our encounter with Christ.” Ruth Poole

ndependence Day (July 4) is the National Day of the United States of America; it is the day Americans, in parades, fireworks, concerts, speeches and private events, celebrate the history, government and traditions of their country. During the American Revolution, the legal separation of the Thirteen Colonies from Great Britain actually occurred on July 2, 1776, when the Second Continental Congress voted to approve a resolution declaring the thirteen united colonies independent of Great Britain. After unanimously voting for independence, the Congress then appointed a committee under the chairmanship of Thomas Jefferson to prepare a Declaration of Independence explaining what had just occurred. On July 3, 1776, John Adams, thrilled by what the diverse members of the Second Continental Congress had just done, wrote his wife, Abigail: "The second day of July, 1776, will be the most remarkable epoch in the history of America. I believe it will be celebrated by succeeding generations as the great anniversary festival...commemorated as a day of deliverance by acts of devotion

to God...solemnized with pomp and parade, shows and illuminations from one end of this continent to the other, from this time forward forever more." Adams was a day early in his prediction. It was the next day, July 4, 1776, when Congress voted to adopt Jefferson's eloquent Declaration of Independence. Adams was right on, however in his prediction of how the day would be celebrated "forever more." Its second sentence is one of the best known sentences in the English language containing the most potent consequential words in American history: "We hold these truths to be self-evident that all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable rights, that among these are life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness." The Declaration was immediately published in broadsides, newspapers and public readings, and soon followed by wide dissemination throughout Europe. It was praised, used and condemned. While most colonists rejoiced in being free from the British tyranny, tens of thousands of black American slaves saw it as their manumission, leaving farm and plantation to join British lines or demand freedom in
other ways; many white loyalists saw fit to migrate to Nova Scotia or other places that remained part of Great Britain. Celebrations predominated, however, and have continued to this day. In 1777, Philadelphia celebrated the Declaration's First Anniversary by hosting an official dinner for the Continental Congress, a 13gun salute, speeches, parades and fireworks. In 1778, General George Washington marked July 4 with a double ration of rum for his soldiers and an artillery salute. In 1781, the Massachusetts General Court became the first state legislature to recognize July 4 as a state holiday. In 1786, the Proposed Prayer Book of the Episcopal Church appointed proper Psalms, Lessons and Prayers for the national observance of Independence Day. The General Convention of 1789 deleted these changes because Bishop William White believed that such an observance would be inappropriate since the majority of the Church's clergy had, in fact, been loyal subjects of the British crown.
