BELOVEDS IN CHRIST -

SAVE THE DATE

“Alleluia. Christ is risen!” We shall joyously exclaim at The Great Vigil of Easter and in Easter morning celebrations. So, why does ours continue to look like a Good Friday world?* Like Saint Peter most of us disciples follow Jesus halfway, not all the way. (As that saint’s namesake, I identify with the placement of his window in our sanctuary: behind Jesus. I know how way-behind Jesus I am.) Like the crowd gathered on Friday at Calvary, I trust few of us would cheer that miscarriage of justice and I doubt that many of us would protest it. What makes the Good Friday story so devastating is that it is still so shockingly true. We are all sinners. At issue is whether there is more mercy in God than there is sin in us. Christian witness is that just as love is stronger than death, so is forgiveness infinitely greater than sin. I think that this is the hardest truth in our faith to believe. The empty tomb is easy to believe compared to the reality that we are forgiven. Remember my namesake, Peter, denied Christ just as Judas betrayed him. The difference is that Peter came back to receive his forgiveness; the tragedy of Judas is that he never did. Easter proclaims that forgiveness is offered to all of us exactly as it was to Peter. Think of this: All the rulers of the world can be forgiven; church people can be too; all are forgiven. The Easter truth is that with the zeal of gratitude we “forgiven sinners” can become better people, just as Simon Peter and Mary Magdalene became ten times

* * * PHONE TREE MINISTRY: NEW MEMBERS NEEDED. Our goal is to contact every parishioner by phone once a month. This is a great opportunity to get to know others better and to share information, needs, and suggestions about Saint Mike's. Please contact Ruth Poole at 949.644.9263.

* * * WE NEED GREETERS, USHERS, Tellers, and Altar Guilders. Please contact Canon Haynes, if interested, or call the Parish Office.

* * * ROSE GARDEN UPDATE: Many thanks to many folks for supporting Saint Michael’s Rose Garden and for sharing your memories of family, friends, and the love of roses. With the help of your donations, we were able to plant six new bushes this year: Mr. Lincoln (deep red), Henry Fonda (vibrant yellow), Double Delight (red and white), Blue Girl (lavender), Twilight Zone (deep purple), and Dark Night (deep red with ivory underside). I hope to spread mulch in the next few weeks. As always, all are invited to become involved in the care and maintenance of the rose garden (KarleneMiller@gmail.com). If you are not able to physically help, donations for food, disease/pest spray, and mulch are always welcome. Please identify your wishes by writing “Rose Garden” on your donations and include any special celebrations or memorials in a note, so that your gift can be properly acknowledged. --Karlene Miller

WOMEN’S FELLOWSHIP meets the last Tuesday of the month and is effectively using our subscription to ChurchNext as the study focus. Beth Bianchi provides her home and coordinates the study session each month.

* * * PLEASE CHECK THE FORWARD MOVEMENT DISPLAY RACK ON THE WALL IN MICHAEL’S ROOM. Pick up a pamphlet or two to share with family and friends. A donation box is provided. The pamphlet “Good Friday: The Paradox of the Cross” contains lessons that all Christians need to read and digest. The author points out the many paradoxes in Jesus’ life and teachings—“whoever would be first must be last; we must be born again; we must grow up to be children; lose our life if we want to save it.” ”Perhaps the most shocking paradox of all is Jesus’ saying, ‘If any want to become my followers, let them deny themselves and take up their cross and follow me.’ ” The author gives many examples of what taking up our cross might mean in our lives. It may be a major or minor cross, one of long-standing or more recent. What is killing you? That cross you bear has led you to where you are today. And look! You have gone on. “The cross is Jesus’ way, truth, and life, which he shares with us. The cross is not the end, but it is the way to the end. The good news is that the cross is not the end, but it is the way to find our end with God, and that is forever, and it begins in this life.”

* * * LEST WE FORGET: There have been 4,531 American military casualties in Iraq and 2,383 in Afghanistan and other locations. "Lord hear our prayers for those who are dead and for those who mourn."

Rector’s Desk from page 1 A GREAT GIFT FOR FAMILY & FRIENDS the people they were before their Easter faith. They were lost in their enthusiasm (“enthusiasm” means “inspired by God”). Easter faith means that instead of endlessly trying to prove ourselves we can express ourselves as fearless, vulnerable, compassionate, joyous followers of our Risen Lord. Jesus has done God’s part: resurrection has overcome crucifixion; forgiveness is stronger than sin; love lasts forever. So, what of us? Are we going to continue the illusion of a Good Friday world,* or start living the reality of an Easter life?

Yours, In Christ -

* On Easter Day 2007, while speaking about living as Easter people in a Good Friday world, I told a story I have been asked to repeat: A parishioner and I went up Pacific View to pray at the grave of her beloved. Nearby a woman was kneeling before two gravestones. When she finished, that woman got up, looked at us, and volunteered, “I come here all the time. You see, my husband and son are buried here. I spend time with God and, in a sense, with them, too. I don’t want ever to forget them or for them to forget me. I know they are with the Lord. I read in the Bible that ‘as in Adam all die, so in Christ all will be made alive.’ Doesn’t it say that? {Yes, 1 Cor. 15:22} And I believe that to be true. When I see them, my Lord-&-God and my husband and my son, we sure won’t be strangers.” As we walked away my friend, our parishioner, said to me, “I’m sorry, Peter, but that’s the best sermon I’ve ever heard!”

Our parish history, “A Celebration of 50 Years,” is available for $15 from Lulu Press bit.ly/SMAAhistory. Twenty percent of the purchase price supports our parish budget. Every Saint Michael's family should have a copy of our history -- 51 pages of text, color photographs, and historical tables. Excerpts of the book are available at the parish website: www.stmikescdm.ladiocese.org

Saint Michael’s Preschool On behalf of the board of directors of the Saint Michael & All Angels Preschool, we wanted to thank everyone for their support and encouragement after Melinda Rader’s presentation at the annual meeting. We also wanted to give the parish an idea of our time line and class sizes. The preschool budget is not part of the annual parish budget. It is supported through donations as designated gifts. The intent from the beginning would be that the preschool would have to support itself. Beyond the consultant, the donated funds have been used to paint the gym and classrooms, clean the carpets in four classrooms, and to file our license request with the state. In order to get our license, we will be updating the classrooms and playground. In addition, there are several fire safety issues that have to be completed. Once that is done, the state will be on-site to visit the facility before issuing the license. As you might imagine, the state wants the facility and curriculum to be ready the day they issue the license. Our goal is to have our license by the end of March. We are licensing three of our six classrooms for 10 children each, ages 2,3, and 4. We are planning for both morning and afternoon sessions that would begin in the fall. Once our license is issued (beginning of April), we will be conducting tours and open houses of the facility and starting pre-enrollment for the fall. During the late spring and summer we are planning on a parent and child class in order to interest families in the facility and preschool. We are so excited to see the hopes of so many people over the years become reality. We are such a blessed parish who live in such a blessed part of the world. Our mission is to share God’s love and beauty with the “children who will lead us!!” --Jim Palda on behalf of the pre-school board of directors THE MISSION COMMISSION ADVISES that April and May are our "Baby Essentials" drive months in support of Families Forward. We will collect diapers, wipes, diaper cream, baby formula, and baby food throughout April and May and deliver to Families Forward to help support local families in need www.families-forward.org/. Please look for the large White Bin in Michael's Room for your donations.

Remember Thou Me My mother never learned how to swim. And I often wonder how my brother, then eleven, and I, age nine, were on a surfboard paddling some hundred yards out in the waves at Honolulu. I wonder how she ever let us out that far. Or perhaps, with selective listening, we didn’t hear her pleas to come in, or see the wild waving of her hands. Perhaps she could see us, but she was just a faint figure on shore with a hundred other tourists milling around on the beach Fortunately for her, when the blue green curls and swells began to expand in dimension, something in the rational part of both my brother’s and my brain told us that we’d best head to shore. Of course, I lived to tell about that event, so no worries now. But the power of the waves and the danger of our situation are still vivid memories. Good thing that I was a good swimmer and that a Styrofoam surfboard was a life preserver for my brother that we could both climb onto. That was a trip of a lifetime, as there were so many new experiences to be had. Grandmother, the world traveler, had planned the trip to bring us all to Hawaii that summer. It was 1973. I was in the third grade and going on the six hour flight was a delight because the whole family -my aunt and uncle, cousins, siblings, parents, and grandmother, the matriarch -filled the rows beside me. Once on the ground we were greeted by the airline host and hostess, given Hawaiian leis to wear that were lovely to see and soft to the touch. These leis would stay in the hotel room the following week, that sweet smell of the plumeria flower filling the air. Hawaii is an exotic place with beaches with black sands and volcanos and pineapple groves. Music and dance so foreign to an Orange County girl’s existence of freeways, and South Coast Plaza. Hawaii was paradise! Continued on page 7

DIETRICH BONHOEFFER (1906-1945) Theologian and Martyr Dietrich Bonhoeffer was born February 4, 1906. He studied at the universities of Berlin and Tuebingen. His doctoral thesis was published in 1930 as Communio Sanctorum. Still too young to be ordained, at the age of 24 Bonhoeffer went to the United States in 1930 for postgraduate study and a teaching fellowship at New York City's Union Theological Seminary. Although Bonhoeffer found the American seminary not up to his exacting German standards ("There is no theology here."), he had lifechanging experiences and friendships. He studied under Reinhold Niebuhr and met Frank Fisher, a black fellow seminarian who introduced him to Abyssinian Baptist Church in Harlem, where Bonhoeffer taught Sunday school and formed a lifelong love for African-American spirituals, a collection of which he took back to Germany. He heard Adam Clayton Powell, Sr. preach the Gospel of Social Justice and became sensitive to not only social injustices experienced by minorities, but also the ineptitude of the church to bring about integration. Bonhoeffer began to see things "from below"—from the perspective of those who suffer oppression. He observed, "Here one can truly speak and hear about sin and grace and the love of God...the Black Christ is preached with rapturous passion and vision." Later, Bonhoeffer referred to his impressions abroad as the point at which he "turned from phraseology to reality." He also learned to drive an automobile, although he failed the driving test three times. He traveled by car through the United States to Mexico, where he had been invited to speak on the subject of peace. His early visits to Italy, Libya, Spain, the United States, Mexico, and Cuba opened Bonhoeffer to ecumenism. From the first days of the Nazi accession to power in 1933, Bonhoeffer was involved in protests against the regime. From 1933 to 1935 he was the pastor of two small congregations in London, but nonetheless was a leading spokesman

for the Confessing Church, the center of Protestant resistance to the Nazis. In 1935, Bonhoeffer was appointed to organize and head a new seminary for the Confessing Church at Finkenwald. He described the community in Life Together and later wrote The Cost of Discipleship. Bonhoeffer became increasingly involved in the political struggle after 1939, when he was introduced to the group seeking Hitler’s overthrow. Bonhoeffer considered refuge in the United States, but he returned to Germany where he was able to continue his resistance. In May 1942, he flew to Sweden to meet Bishop Bell and convey through him to the British government proposals for a negotiated peace. The offer was rejected by the Allies who insisted upon unconditional surrender. Bonhoeffer was arrested April 5, 1943, and imprisoned in Berlin. After an April 9, 1944, attempt on Hitler’s life failed, documents were discovered linking Bonhoeffer to the conspiracy. He was taken to Buchenwald concentration camp and then to Schoenberg Prison. On Sunday, April 8, 1945, just as he concluded a service in a school building in Schoenberg, two men came in with the chilling summons,“Prisoner Bonhoeffer…come with us.” He said to another prisoner, “This is the end. For me, the beginning of life.” Bonhoeffer was hanged the next day, April 9, at Flossenburg Prison. There is in Bonhoeffer ’s life a remarkable unity of faith, prayer, writing, and action. The pacifist theologian came to accept the guilt of plotting the death of Hitler because he was convinced that not to do so would be a greater evil. Discipleship was to be had only at great cost. It is no wonder that God created these exotic islands to tantalize our notion of heaven. Jesus says distinctively to the thief beside him on the Cross, “Today, you will be with me in paradise.” He doesn’t say to us that we will be with him in a temple, or a castle, or at the foot of a throne, but rather, the destination of a cruise ship. Why this particular noun and geographical category? To ease the pain of suffering is my take. To stir in the hemispheres of the creative parts of the mind for a brief moment of healing as creative images of palm trees and oases and relaxation are brought to focus, just as women are trained in Lamaze to focus on the point as they take each wave of the uterine muscle contracting in labor. The Creator knows what he is about, as brain science tells us that creative thinking is healing in nature. Healing comes when we rest, behold beauty and dwell in peace. Away from all violence and sin in nature. Paradise speaks so closely to Creation echoing back to the form of a Garden. In our Stations of the Cross for Families that occurs at four o’clock on Good Friday during Holy Week, one of the cast members is named Dismas, the good thief. On the eleventh station of tile on our patio grounds, during the dramatic reading, Dismas reminds us of being loyal and true to the person known as Jesus. Dismas is the one that tries to shut down the conversation of the other robber and thief who is hurling insults at Jesus. He reasons that they deserve what was coming to them, a brutal beating and suffocation by hanging. But, for the innocent man in the center, Dismas deems Jesus as innocent of all wrongdoing. Perhaps, Dismas watched as Jesus was

nailed. Scripture does not tell us, of the three who went first, second or third, or if all were brought up together. Then the Gospel makes us privy to the conversation that follows. Such a conversation among three men is brute psychology. Agony and pain and blood permeate the setting. This is torture, the very most opposite of paradise. If we were to pull apart the conversation, the three men still reflect their humanity. They are made in God’s image as true offspring. They are thinking, reasoning creatures even in their crippling pain and suffering. One thief postulates in anger, his words of bitterness and anger are ours to read, “If indeed you are the Son of God…” The other thief asks for compassion from The One who grants promise and relief. “Remember me Jesus when you come into your Kingdom.” How often do we ask the Lord the same plea: “Remember me God in my needs, in my hopes, in my wildest dreams imaginable on this vast earth?” “Remember me God when your extending hand of riches and wealth is dispersed.” “Remember me when I am alone.” “Remember me God when no one else seems to care.” “Remember Thou me.” And the response we hear and can treasure from scripture is.. “I have called you by name, and I am yours.” Isaiah 43:1 For while we were still helpless, at the right time Christ died for the ungodly. For one will hardly die for a righteous man; though perhaps for the good man someone would dare even to die. But God demonstrates His own love toward us, in that while we were yet sinners, Christ died for us. Romans 5:6-8

FOR THE LOVE OF MIKE

APRIL 2017 8

I got me flowers to straw thy way; I got me boughs off many a tree: But thou wast up by break of day, And brought’st thy sweets along with thee.

EASTER by The Rev’d George Herbert (1593-1663)

The Sunne arising in the East, Though he give light, & th’ East perfume; If they should offer to contest With thy arising, they presume.

Rise heart; thy Lord is risen. Sing his praise Without delayes, Who takes thee by the hand, that thou likewise With him mayst rise: That, as his death calcined thee to dust, His life may make thee gold, and much more, just. Awake, my lute, and struggle for thy part With all thy art. The crosse taught all wood to resound his name, Who bore the same. His stretched sinews taught all strings, what key Is best to celebrate this most high day. Consort both heart and lute, and twist a song Pleasant and long: Or, since all musick is but three parts vied And multiplied, O let thy blessed Spirit bear a part, And make up our defects with his sweet art.

Can there be any day but this, Though many sunnes to shine endeavour? We count three hundred, but we misse: There is but one, and that one ever. “Easter”is Herbert’s personal reworking of Psalm 57 and is an act of emotional confession. “Easter” is from “The Temple,”(1663) a collection of over one hundred and fifty devotional lyrics by The Rev’d George Herbert, a Welch-born English poet, orator and Anglican priest. Lyric poems are written as if spoken (or sung) by one voice. Readers are often encouraged to feel as if the poem is addressed directly to them or, in other cases, that they are overhearing the poet’s private meditations. This gives an impression of great intimacy. It also produces a sense of authenticity. Because of this, lyrics have always been popular forms for love poetry. For the very same reason they have also been a natural choice for writing about religious belief.
