NORR UK Practice Profile

Architecture Interior Design Urban Planning

About Us The UK company was originally formed from a number of prominent practices, with offices across the country and histories stretching back 50+ years, who joined forces in the mid-2000s. In 2010, the group joined the international branch of NORR’s existing architectural company and became NORR Consultants Ltd. As an employee owned practice, we are run by architects delivering world class architecture, urban planning and interior design to public sector and private clients.

Our History NORR’s partnerships and traditions harken back to 1938 when John B. Parkin started a private practice in Toronto. His firm’s application of Modernist design principles was instrumental in popularising the movement in Canada and by the 1950’s John B. Parkin Associates had become Canada’s best-known architectural practice. In the early 1970’s, the firm was reorganised as Neish, Owen, Rowland & Roy Architects and Engineers after the addition of talented new partners. A decade later the thriving practice shortened its name to the acronym NORR.

Retail and Shopping

We have a significant track record in the retail sector, working with the country’s leading retail companies in projects out of town, in-town and at factory outlet sites. A major factor in successful retail design is the movement and management of people. Many retail schemes also involve skilful integration of new or converted space in town centres and an appreciation of the historic and urban fabric of the site. Our specialist skills enable successful and efficient space utilisation, combined to produce high quality schemes that optimise a site’s potential and maximise the client’s return on their investment.

DALMUNACH DISTILLERY This new build took its unique design from the processes involved in creating the much loved drink. The end product has won multuple awards including the 2015 RIAS award and RIBA National Award in the same year.

Industrial and Energy

The primary purpose of an industrial building is to support the processes within it. As a result, our designs in this sector are based around production machinery, enabling an efficient use of the site and an environmentally responsible building, whilst retaining flexibility for the future wherever possible. We also have the skills to maximise a site’s potential, whilst designing a facility that will be within budget and on programme. This applies whether it is a speculative development, distribution centre, special process or owner occupied facility. We have significant expertise and experience in the whole spectrum of the industrial sector throughout the UK and recently in mainland Europe working with developers, occupiers and industrial processors with projects ranging from nursery units for startup companies, large scale logistics and distribution warehouses to bespoke manufacturing plants for delivery of cutting edge technology. 17

Education Our involvement in the education sector goes beyond the delivery of construction projects; we advise educational establishments on their estates and are also involved with sector advisory organisations including the Scottish Futures Trust (SFT) and the Education and Skills Funding Agency (ESFA). We believe that designing for young people is an exciting opportunity but also a great privilege and a huge personal responsibility. The creation of a stimulating learning environment has the capacity to directly influence the development of children and young adults in a very positive way, as well as significantly enhancing the sense of well-being for all users, including staff and the wider community. We understand this well, which is why we find designing school buildings so rewarding. Our reputation is based on collaborative working with schools, colleges and universities to create spaces that enrich the experience of staff and students. The complex requirements of educational facilities present a particular opportunity; to provide clients with design excellence that reflects the aspirations of the user.

MIDPARK HOSPITAL Providing a modern, stable and secure environment for patients requiring specialist care, this acute mental health facility has seen patient stay drop below three weeks, improving care through design for NHS Dumfries and Galloway.

Healthcare

We believe fundamentally in ‘healing by design’, by taking a holistic approach from the outset and distilling down to the key requirements. It is ultimately the individual people that these facilities serve, provide employment for, or are in co-existence with, that are central to the designs we deliver. With an established reputation for working with NHS Trusts, Primary Care Trusts, private practices and private healthcare groups, we’ve worked on projects ranging from surgeries and health centres, through to major hospital transformation plans. Each of our projects are supported by a specialist team of architects with proven abilities in medical planning and healthcare design, and technical resources committed to delivering the best quality design solutions. Our extensive expertise has made us one of the most active architectural companies in the healthcare sector, according to Building Better Healthcare’s Special Report on Healthcare Construction, published March 2018. 17

Defence and Custodial We have worked on MOD projects, from training and educational facilities to residential and base accommodation for thousands of personnel across every faction of the armed forces, and we have made significant contributions in the UK and abroad in the defence and custodial sectors. Since the mid-1980s we have been involved in Home Office Custodial Projects and are currently part of a national constructor framework alliance as well as being involved in the Home Office Greening programme. Using this extensive experience, we have recently been engaged in the creation of Custody Options Designed and Engineered (CODE); standardised custody options with variations of pre-designed suites to fit different police force budgets and needs. This was designed in partnership with the Home Office and more than 20 police forces, and aims to tackle issues such as minimising the risk of detainee injury, increasing security of evidence, and providing a better working environment that is more efficient and sustainable. 1: Lynx Wildcat Training Facility 2: Blue Light Campus, Lincoln 3: Gloucester Police Custody Unit

Government and Local Authority We have demonstrated an ability to adapt with change, whilst learning and implementing best practice along with continuous improvements. With established long term relationships with many of our public sector clients, we have an in-depth understanding of the issues that they face relating to the management and rationalisation of their estates and property portfolios. We work with local councils and central government departments, at a strategic level, to ensure that their aspirations are met and that they are strongly positioned for the future. Our equally strong links to the private sector throughout the UK allows us to explore innovative funding solutions which may be increasingly required. We have comprehensive experience in projects for the Court and Police services, as well as community centres, supported by experience of numerous major PFI and PPP schemes.

Science and Research We have over 30 years’ experience in the design and development of high technology research offices and laboratories on science parks, campuses, and standalone sites for single and multi-tenancy occupation. Our experience began with the Cambridge Science Park, which was established principally to meet government requests for a greater interchange of ideas, people and facilities between universities and high-technology industry. Our original commission with Trinity College Cambridge involved us in all negotiations that led to the submission for Outline Planning Consent in 1970. Subsequently, we were involved in the planing, detailed design and delivery of the majority of buildings on the campus through to the new millenium. Since its inception, the site has expanded from its original 14 to over 130 acres. Today, we are involved in multiple commissions throughout the UK and worldwide, delivering high tech laboratory accommodation from life sciences through to specific GMP facilities, including cleanrooms and medical production environments.

Residential

Changing trends in the nation’s population have led to an evolution of different housing needs such as retirement homes, live/work accommodation, affordable housing and high rise high density urban developments. Our experience in residential projects ranges from customised individual houses to 30-storey towers and from private developers to local councils. We aim to maximise a site’s potential and it’s position in the surrounding environment. We work with local communities to ensure our developments meet expectations and always aspire to introduce cost effective energy efficiency into the building design. Combining a detailed knowledge of the latest government guidelines and application of the best practice, we build award-winning homes for people.

Sport and Leisure

With extensive experience of the rapidly changing sport and leisure market, we provide a comprehensive service, from establishing strategic needs and initial feasibility through construction and occupation. The current movement to improve health and wellbeing, from local councils to private investors, together with the integration with education facility funding streams, is leading to more joint-use wet and dry sports facilities. Our in-depth experience in all education sectors supports our work in sport and leisure. Swimming pool design is a very specialist area and we have an extensive portfolio of completed projects where we can demonstrate high quality design, adherence to budget, energy efficiency and attention to lifecycle costs. We have a tried and tested range of specialist subconsultants across the UK and internationally and pride ourselves of client and community satisfaction. 17

Transit and Aviation

We believe the design process for transport systems presents one of the greatest challenges in the industry with its focus not just on customer experience but on cost imperatives, alongside evolving best practice. Innovation in environmental responsibility is a key factor in all we do and is frequently the driver in our designs. Our track record within the aviation Sector in particular spans over 15 years. We draw on direct operational experience with an airport authority in addition to broad technical expertise. We frequently work within live environments and our reputation for collaborative client relationships and being committed to the highest standards mean clients return to us time and again to help them meet their objectives.

Masterplanning Masterplanning consultancy is frequently the centrepiece to the revitalisation of a site of natural or historical interest. It can also offer the expertise and judgements required for transforming challenging building situations. Analysing the context and sensitivities of the site provides a starting point and we allow our creativity and focus on innovation to take us from there. Our projects offer modern and attractive design solutions for new builds, sympathetic conversions, refurbishments, or mixed developments. We have proven experience in planning and designing for industrial and commercial developments, inner city masterplans, science and research campuses, hospital transformation plans, as well as residential planning on a wide range of scales.

Conservation and Refurbishment The UK is privileged to boast a vast and unique array of fine historic buildings, spaces and monuments. With a team of highly qualified and experienced professionals, we are capable of dealing with the often conflicting challenges of historic fabric and the commercial needs of development. In addition to this, we have a demonstrable track record in successful conversion and refurbishment of listed and other heritage buildings and urban quarters involving change of use, re-use and extension and redevelopment – of both buildings individually and in groups. Together with our extensive experience with sensitive sites and conservation areas, we are at the forefront of redeveloping and conserving for current and future communities.

Sustainability

In each project, regardless of scale, we are driven by the pursuit of excellence. As a creatively focused organisation, we are aware of our social, economic, and environmental responsibilities. We seek to implement appropriate and sustainable design solutions, using locally and ethically sourced resources, and advising our clients on the best and most affordable options for their development. Many of our projects are BREEAM rated and we strive to reduce carbon emissions and improve energy consumption not only in our projects but within our business operations as well.

At the core of each of our designs is Building Information Modelling (BIM). Over the years we have developed reliable protocols and practices for designing buildings and managing the design and construction process, including end use and maintenance. Our team of architects and technicians have extensive construction experience and are able to deliver the highest quality documents to our clients and consultants. We work collaboratively with the design and construction team to ensure excellence, and make best use of the latest technologies.
