String® System String® Pocket Museum Works

This year, the String® System celebrates its 71st anniversary. Yet, everything is new. First and foremost there are still thousands of new configurations waiting to be discovered. And with new brown panels, beige metal shelves and a selection of new accessories, we have added a lot of unexplored possibilities. We are also introducing a new String® Pocket metal in a selection of colours: neon, taupe and white. Who could have known that the winning entry in a competition to design a bookshelf in 1949 would still be reinventing itself so many decades later. This year we’ve even reinvented our company’s name. We are now ..by String Furniture. This means we are making even more room for new ideas. The first one is the Museum shelf. It’s designed for the Nationalmuseum in Stockholm, Sweden. It’s a shelf created to hold precious pieces of art, not to mention car keys, fresh flowers from your garden or a quickly scribbled note to your loved ones. String® System String® was born in 1949. That year, Sweden’s biggest publishing house, Bonniers, arranged a competition to design a new bookshelf. The challenge was to come up with a design that combined extraordinary functionality with a distinctly modern look. The winning entry was String®, designed by Nisse and Kajsa Strinning. Of course, nobody could ever have imagined that the bookshelf would go on to win numerous international prizes and still be loved and much sought-after more than 70 years later. While new functions, materials and colours are introduced continuously, the basic design of String® hasn’t changed at all. And all the parts are still made in Sweden. The String® System can be configured in thousands of ways. No one has ever tried them all.

Plex panels was developed by Nisse and Kajsa Strinning in 1954. It was the first reinterpretation of the original String® System. Laser-cut clear Perspex means the shelves seem to hover, giving the whole unit an ultra-light appearance. Plex is available in two depths, 20cm and 30cm. Note that Plex fits together with most of the String® System, with only a few exceptions.

String® Pocket This is the small, light and handy little one. String® Pocket comes in a variety of colours and materials. It‘s sold as a complete unit of two panels and three shelves. You can combine them in a number of ways. For example, with two units you can build up to three sections with two shelves each. Works Soon after it was first released, the String® System was chosen by many interior designers for office projects. To make it even more useful we recently teamed up with designers Anna von Schewen and Björn Dahlström who developed Works – a range of freestanding furniture for a flexible, ergonomic and contemporary work environment that includes height-adjustable desks, storage units and cabinets. Of course, Works ..by String Furniture fits seamlessly together with the String® System.

Museum In 2018, Sweden’s Nationalmuseum re-opened after a major renovation. As a part of the museum’s stunning rebirth, the design and architecture studio TAF and String Furniture were commissioned to design and produce a console shelf for the artistic collaboration NM&. The result is Museum, an elegant shelf made from fine textured coated aluminum.
