Waterfront vision unveiled Ferris wheel, ice rink floated for ‘Canada’s best gathering place’
BRENT RICHTER brichter@nsnews.com
A skating rink five times bigger than the one at Robson Square.Water fountains that could come
from the Bellagio and, yes, a ferris wheel on the City of North Vancouver’s waterfront. “How cool would that be?” Roger Brooks frequently remarked as he
listed off dozens of ideas that would make the area between Waterfront Park and St. Georges Avenue “Canada’s best gathering place.” After much handwringing in recent years over what to do with the land, city council hired Brooks, a destination marketing expert, to help run a process
that would take public input and turn it into a vision for the prime location. Brooks gave his presentation summarizing more than 1,000 survey responses, emails and phone calls plus consultation with local stakeholders to a packed council chamber Tuesday night. “Wouldn’t it be great if
people over there at Canada Place were looking over here and they have something to see that makes them say ‘Wow, I want to take that SeaBus over there, because that looks really cool,’” Brooks said. Brooks’ vision for Lot 5, which will now be branded “the Shipyards” includes a 15,000-square foot ice
rink in winter/amphitheatre and plaza with water features in the summer — all covered by a tensile structure — a three-storey building with 60,000 square feet of revenue-generating commercial space (no chains or franchises welcome), a garden/gazebo area, See No place page 3
Former West Van cop claims retaliation behind his firing JANE SEYD jseyd@nsnews.com
A former West Vancouver Police officer says he was fired from the department as retaliation for filing harassment complaints against his supervisors. But the police chief disagrees. Todd Mosher was a West Vancouver police officer for 12 years until he was fired in 2011. Mosher maintains he was fired because he was critical of practices at the police department, including favouritism for some officers and harassment of others. Mosher said he had been doing a good job as a police officer, and had received praise in See Fired page 3

restaurants, a new home for the North Vancouver museum and archives as well as a ferris wheel similar to the one erected on Seattle’s waterfront in 2012. As for the stern of the HMS Flamborough Head, which council was prepared to scrap but then asked Brooks to consider including in the plan after protests from heritage advocates, there just wasn’t a spot for it anywhere close to where it sits today. “Lot 5 is about people. That means scale. We couldn’t put it there. We thought about making it a stage. We talked to sound people, lighting people. It just doesn’t work. It’s just too big. It does not scale to people,” he said. “We tried every way we could.” But Brooks added, there’s no reason the stern wouldn’t work if placed and repurposed on the shoreline of Waterfront Park. The Lower Lonsdale business district is also in need of some serious spitshine, which Brooks was also tasked with devising. “I’ve got to tell you, coming and getting off the SeaBus, your first impression of North Vancouver is about as poor

decoration on the walls, rather than demolishing the TransLink facility and starting over.
The commerce culture of Lower Lonsdale also needs to change so businesses are open after 6 p.m. — when
70 per cent of purchases are made, he said. Beyond that, Brooks said the LoLo business district needs beautification, benches, entertainers, more patio space even if it comes at the expense of parking, and a gateway marking the entrance to the district at Lonsdale and Third. Lest anyone be carried away by thoughts of romantic ferris wheel rides or Shakespeare under a tent, Brooks’ presentation included the rough costs — about $30 million, not including the ferris wheel or moving the Flamborough Head. Seattle’s ferris wheel cost $20 million but it is privately owned and made $11 million in its first year, Brooks said, noting he would not expect council to take it on solo. “For the money, this will give you more bang for your buck than anything else you can do, period,” he said. Once operational, the Shipyards should generate $2- to $3-million in revenues for the city, and the costs could be offset with corporate sponsorships and donations and the project could be phased in over about 10 years. The city still has several See Final page 5

Former West Vancouver police chief Kash Heed says problems of sexual harassment, racism and bullying that existed before his tenure at the West Vancouver Police Department still exist within the organization. “It’s not just former employees,” who are talking about the problems, said Heed. He said several members of the West Vancouver Police Department have spoken to him in the past six months about continued inappropriate behaviour in the organization. Heed said those people are reluctant to come forward with their concerns over fear of retaliation. On Monday, West Vancouver Police Chief Peter Lepine announced he will step down from the top job at the department after
five years on the job. Lepine — who succeeded Heed in the top position — said his decision was unrelated to the public airing of an employee survey which pointed to plummeting morale at the department. It also came a day after a news story was published detailing allegations of harassment. This week, both Lepine and West Vancouver Mayor Michael Smith characterized most of those incidents as dating back about a decade. “That was a very long time ago,” said Lepine. The West Vancouver Police Association, which represents unionized police officers at the department, also issued a statement saying “many of the comments made in the media by former employees are not representative of See Bold page 5
a number of internal evaluations and letters from the public — some of which were provided to the North Shore News. But starting around 2009, “I would show up for work and the reports I was writing weren’t good enough anymore,” he said. He said around that time he was asked by one colleague, “What’s it like to have a target on your back?” “It was clearly a case of a different set of rules for Todd Mosher,” he said. Former West Vancouver police Chief Kash Heed described Mosher as someone who had the right character traits to be a good police officer but who sometimes rubbed people in the department the wrong way by questioning decisions. “He is not a follower,” said Heed. Mosher said when he was questioned about driving to North Vancouver in his police
B\10 C,S)7/.\2 57UX)\ 9YX\[ ]\0\2 c\5XS\$ ]g_E_ FD]]cf68 car to let his dog out for a bathroom break, he asked superiors why they weren’t investigating another West Vancouver police officer who Mosher alleged was having sex on-duty. The other officer denied the on-the-clock trysts; Mosher was told he was guilty of deceitful action. Mosher said after his firing, he appealed to both the West Vancouver Police
Board and Office of Police Complaints Commissioner about how he was treated — but that his complaints fell on deaf ears. “They haven’t dealt with it,” he said. West Vancouver Police Chief Peter Lepine disagrees with Mosher’s description of what happened. “He’s being very selective in terms of the information he’s providing,” said Lepine. Lepine said he brought in an outside investigator — Vince Ready — who spent two years looking into Mosher’s allegations before concluding no inappropriate actions had been taken. The Office of the Police Complaints Commissioner — which oversees internal discipline — reached the same conclusion, said Lepine. Mosher said he’s not claiming to be an angel. “I’ve made mistakes in my career,” he said. But, he adds, “I’ve never done anything to warrant my firing.” “I have never beaten
anyone up... I’ve never driven drunk ...” His union, he said, “didn’t help me much. .. If any of those guys stick their neck out for me they would have been the next example.” Detective Tom Wolf von Gudenberg, president of the West Vancouver Police Association, says the union did provide support to Mosher. Wolf von Gudenberg said the union was satisfied due process was followed in the case. Mosher said being fired from the police department has taken its toll on him. Ever since he was a little boy, he wanted to be a police officer, he said. “It’s a rewarding career. They’ve taken that away from me. It’s affected me financially. I’ve lost friendships over it.” Mosher said he’s glad to see issues of harassment within the department are now getting a public airing. “I’m not the only one,” he said. “I’m the only one putting my name to it.”

Lepine acknowledged there have been allegations of harassment at the department that have been investigated within the past several years. “In some cases these allegations were substantiated. In others, not,” he said. Heed said he’d heard about problems including remarks full of sexual innuendo, racism and bullying at the department before he took the top job in West Vancouver. Heed said those who

Brooks closed his pitch with a plea that council not let the waterfront vision become another plan to sit on a shelf or become picked apart to nothing by trying to make it please everyone. “I’m begging you to just say, ‘Staff, make it happen.’ The second you go back out there and say ‘Public, what do you think? What should we change?’ all of a sudden, the whole thing is going to come apart,” he said. “You’re never going to get anywhere.” If council were to get staff working on developing the business plan, securing funding and getting architectural designs, there’s no reason why the Shipyards portion could not be open by 2016, Brooks said. Brooks plans to present council with his final report with a “to do list” on the vision within a month.
were part of an “old boys club” at the department were favoured, while others found themselves on the outside. Heed, who is IndoCanadian, said he heard racial slurs directed at both him and his wife. When he started making changes to the culture, he said about a third of the officers were on-side immediately, a third were “sitting on the fence” and a third were decidedly resistant. He acknowledges not all his moves were well received. “I was not there to be popular.” Heed said once he left the department to enter politics, the culture within the department reverted to what it had been previously. “They defaulted to that traditional management style,” he said. Heed said he was shocked by the recent results of the employee survey. “I have never seen surveys that showed that level of dissatisfaction with the upper echelon,” he said. “That’s very concerning.” This week, both Attorney General Suzanne Anton and WorkSafeBC announced they will be looking into
what’s happening in the department. Megan Johnston, a spokeswoman with WorkSafeBC, said an inspector would visit the police department to ensure compliance with anti-bullying regulations. Heed warned it will take bold moves to solve the problems. That could even involve merging the West Vancouver Police Department with the Vancouver Police Department, he suggested. Lepine said the department is working on the issues identified in the employee survey.

t’s ambitious with a capital A. A skating rink, ferris wheel, amphitheatre and dozens of other amenities that could permanently redefine the City of North Vancouver’s waterfront and Lower Lonsdale. The sheer size means, no doubt, some will regard it as trouble with a capital T, but we applaud the vision put forward by Roger Brooks, even if we have big questions about costs. Brooks warned council not to take this out for more public consultation as it could put the entire project in jeopardy. That’s not going to go over well here, especially during an election year. But he has a point. There has already been input from more than 1,000 people and there isn’t exactly a Plan B unless it is another decade of leaving the area

generally barren. This is the advice taxpayers paid for. Some may find Brooks’ plan a little too “Disney,” which it arguably is. But by nature of its massive scale, this plan has something in it for everyone, whether they’re interested in arts and culture, physical activity, history, shopping, a quiet sit-down in a garden or some, heaven forbid, good clean fun. Lower Lonsdale is coming into its own and it’s time the Shipyards started living up to its potential by becoming a public space we can be proud of — somewhere we opt to spend our time and invite the world to share in. Council avoids action on this plan, or some close variation of it, at the peril of its businesses, residents and visitors, as well as its own legacy.

Ferry service cuts spark Bowen petition Dear Editor: Why is my MLA afraid to represent me by not confirming he will raise a caucus item? Just because he is a rookie MLA and may be ambitious, how does he know that he is really representing his constituents when he does not want to raise a caucus item on my behalf? Like others on Bowen Island, along with those living in the coastal communities, and those who have families or homes or connections to the island(s), I am concerned about the recent service level cuts by BC ferries. The liberal government was afraid to implement their BC ferry service level cuts before election as they did not want voter backlash. Granted, this
is a smart political move; however, if any of the currently elected MLAs were to be living on Bowen Island, would they not feel differently — this is the question, no? When I started my personal petition against the BC ferry service levels cuts on Bowen I thought I’d just get a few hundred signatures as I was canvassing on my own. As things turned out, although I have limited time and resources, approximately 1,300 Bowen Islanders of voting age signed my petition, and it will be presented to the B.C. legislature hopefully this month. I have never been politically active nor have I ever started a petition. This time, however,

the government has got “just” a little too far in its dictatorship leadership style, whereby only cuts are the name of the game; fairness does not even enter into their equation no matter what anyone else may state. The message from Victoria is clear: all families do not count — only the families that live in highly populated areas where
Ms. Clark’s government is already counting votes they need to keep or obtain for reelection. Has Ms. Clarke or Minister Stone set foot on Bowen Island in recent months? I don’t think so. Why are they not here telling us what great things the ferry cuts are going to do to us? Tell me why? She could get a photo holding baby while she is at it.
The funny thing — I’m embarrassed to admit — is that I voted Liberal, but this does not seem to matter as I am just one person. Something is wrong here with how our political system is. Am I stuck just hoping a NDP ferry critic in the legislature is enough representation? Andrew Pietrow Bowen Island

Green MLA charts own way in Victoria He doesn’t get a lot of face time in the legislature, but Green Party MLA Andrew Weaver is becoming one of the more intriguing provincial politicians in B.C. and the legislature session that is just under way should given him a small platform to demonstrate just that. The government and the Official Opposition naturally dominate most of the proceedings. They have the most members, and have a much larger platform to air their views. But in many respects, the actions and words coming from both the government and the Official Opposition are rather predictable. The government oversells its message, and reject pretty well everything the opposition members have to say (which is frequently over-the-top rhetoric). Weaver, given his unique status, has an opportunity to be heard above the clichéridden yelling match that often passes for debate in the legislature chamber. You can be sure that the B.C. Liberals, still flush with confidence after that unexpected election win, will continue to talk about the potential of an LNG industry and the need for
Keith Baldrey
View from the Ledge economic growth. The NDP, still bruised from its election loss and unable to create an inspiring leadership race, will paint all B.C. Liberal policies with the same brush: they are bad, mean and hypocritical. Weaver created a bit of a stir in the summer when he actually voted in favor of the B.C. Liberal budget, because it was balanced (on paper at least). A number of NDP MLAs denounced him for doing so, but his reasoning was a balanced budget is what British Columbians had endorsed in the election campaign and who was he to say no to that? Besides,Weaver argued, what’s wrong with a balanced budget anyway? He seemed genuinely
puzzled why the New Democrats would have such a different view of things. And herein lies the difference between Weaver and the NDP: he doesn’t take positions based almost entirely on whether the governing party likes them or not. This independent streak that “tilts” green can set him apart. The most recent example of this was Weaver’s public backing of building a refinery to refine bitumen from the Alberta oil sands. In his view, this was a compromise position that addressed environmental concerns about oil flowing from the oil sands and still allowed Canadian energy companies access to new markets. In taking this position, Weaver has separated himself from those who want to simply shut down the oil sands industry, period. He favors “slowing down” production with new regulations, not stopping it entirely. “I like to think the Green Party as a science-based, evidence-based common sense party,”Weaver recently told the Prince George Citizen newspaper. “It’s a party that realizes that we need gasoline in our cars
but we also need to have a strategy to wean ourselves off that.” Predictably,Weaver has enraged some New Democrats. One NDP MLA, Doug Routley, attacked Weaver on social media, calling him a “hypocrite” for his views (and also falsely saying Weaver supports the Site C dam proposal, which he does not). But Weaver is charting a careful path through some very sensitive territory and he seems to be having a far easier, and effective, time of it than the NDP and that may explain why he has developed a knack for getting under the skin of New Democrats. For example,Weaver has spoken in favor of independent power projects, noting their clean energy production and dismissing criticism of them as coming largely from public sector unions (which support, of course, the NDP). As Weaver continues this approach of pragmatic
compromise, look for the NDP to become increasingly uncomfortable with the upstart MLA from Oak Bay. Of course, Weaver does run the risk of alienating hard-core “green” voters. One of his constituents stopped me on the street the other day to express his anger with Weaver’s support for an oil refinery and his refusal to outright condemn the tar sands, but that’s not the kind of person that got Weaver elected in May. Weaver received more than 10,700 votes in the last election, an increase of
more than 8,000 over the Green vote in 2009.Those are folks who likely voted for the B.C. Liberals or the NDP in the past, and I wouldn’t characterize them as environmental protesters. And Weaver seems to know his reelection depends on retaining the support of those disaffected New Democrats and B.C. Liberal voters, and not on appealing to the smaller ranks of the environmental protest movement. Keith Baldrey is chief political reporter for Global BC. Keith. Baldrey@globalnews.ca

15-storey tower proposed for Keith
Victoria Park blvd could be sold for density BRENT RICHTER brichter@nsnews.com
NorthVancouver residents will soon be able to speak their piece about a new highrise building planned for central Lonsdale. City of North Vancouver council voted Monday night to hold a public hearing for FDG Property Management’s proposal for a 15-storey tower at 161 East Keith Rd. If approved, the project will include 52 condos and 41 rental suites, which must remain rental for the building’s lifespan. Council has been seeking to beef up the city’s supply of purpose-built rental housing since most existing rental buildings were built between the ’50s and ’70s when senior governments offered incentives and today, those buildings are at risk for redevelopment. Because developers are less inclined to build rental units when
stratas result in a much faster return on investment, the city allows higher density in a project in exchange for market rental apartments. In order to create a lot large enough to allow the density proposed for the 93 units, the developer will have to buy the adjacent boulevard from the city at a cost of $1.8 million. The land must be kept as a boulevard and be improved and maintained at FDG’s expense. The new tower will come at the expense of an existing 12-unit rental building from 1954 that is now in “relatively poor” condition, according to a city staff report. The building’s tenants will be offered four months’ notice before eviction, one month of free rent, free access to moving vans and boxes, and assistance finding a new place to live, according to the report. But the project will be by no means a slam-dunk at council if reservations expressed by council members Monday night are any indication of coming opposition.

“I am not inclined to support this particular project. I feel that it represents an example of the kinds of concerns we were hearing in the public input period about density going where density was not expected,’ said Coun. Pam Bookham, adding that the sale of the boulevard to get the area required for density amounted to “sleight of hand.” “It’s not sitting well with people who live in close proximity who, having done their due diligence on purchasing their properties, were led to believe such a small site would not support this scale of development. . . . I think we do a disservice to our community when we encourage a developer to come forward with this kind of proposal. I don’t think it should have gotten out of the starting gate, myself.” Coun. Guy Heywood joined Bookham in showing concern about the size of the building compared to the size of the lot, but added he doesn’t like the city’s arrangement of swapping

INQUIRING REPORTER The City of North Vancouver was presented with a new vision for Central Waterfront that included water fountains, commercial space and a skating rink that would make the one at Robson Square look petite in comparison. There was even a suggestion of installing a ferris wheel at the end of the pier, all of this consolidated from public suggestions. The hope is not only for an increase in revenue for the city, but also to attract local residents and tourists alike. But is this a good vision for the city? Have your say at nsnews.com – Anne Watson

Prank call sidetracks NSR BRENT RICHTER brichter@nsnews.com
North Shore Rescue members were led astray from a rescue attempt this week by a prank call. NSR members were looking for an out-ofbounds snowboarder on Cypress Mountain Monday evening when 9-1-1 received a short, muffled call from someone sounding distressed. Police traced the call to Cypress and NSR members spilt up to find the new caller. They later tracked down the phone’s owner, a 15-year-old North Vancouver boy. “He’s very apologetic. He’s insisting he doesn’t know who or how the call was made with his phone,” said Const. Jeff Palmer, West Vancouver police spokesman. Regardless of who made the call, it was a bad idea, Palmer added. “You’ve already

For dance company founder Tina Finkelman Berkett, there is nothing more important than helping her dancers grow and develop artistically. To ensure that goal continues to be achieved, it’s imperative that they’re exposed to choreographers who have something creatively specific to offer
as well as who present them with a unique challenge. The success of that approach will be exemplified this weekend when Finkelman Berkett’s company, BodyTraffic, takes the stage at the 2014 Chutzpah! Festival. The annual Vancouverbased international Jewish performing arts festival opens tomorrow and runs to March 9, offering 16 days of dance, world music, theatre and comedic performances. Finkelman Berkett founded BodyTraffic, an award-winning LA-based repertory dance company, with Lillian Barbeito in 2007. “We were both in Los Angeles, transplanted from the East Coast, and at the height of our careers and really feeling like LA was not a place where we were able to continue on the path See Green page 26

Oscar watch: Hopefuls keep eyes on the prize
JULIE CRAWFORD ContributingWriter
Put on your best dress, get your ballots ready at home and prepare to stifle a yawn: there isn’t much suspense to be had from this year’s Academy Awards, airing March 2 and hosted by Ellen DeGeneres. What fun is an Oscar show if there’s no suspense, no heated arguments, no throwing popcorn at the TV? The only gasps this year were heard when Tom and Oprah’s names weren’t called on nomination day. Let’s hope Bradley Cooper shows up in full American Hustle perm to liven things up . . . . Here are your nominees, and who was passed over this year. ■ Best Picture Best Picture is often a foregone conclusion by this point, but this is the only category remotely up for grabs, between 12Years A Slave and American Hustle. 12Years should take it. Snubbed was Rush, the enjoyable Formula One flick from Ron Howard. And while critics loved the Coen Brothers’ Inside Llewyn Davis, Academy voters weren’t impressed.Who else is nominated: Dallas Buyers Club, Gravity, Captain Phillips, Philomena, Nebraska, Her,The Wolf OfWall Street. ■ Best Director People want to recognize director Alfonso Cuaron for his Gravity feat, but don’t love the film enough to give
it Best Picture. It’s a sure thing that he’ll win. Also nominated: Steve McQueen (12Years A Slave), Martin Scorsese (TheWolf ofWall Street), David O. Russell (American Hustle), Alexander Payne (Nebraska). Snubbed: Paul Greengrass (Captain Phillips).
■ Best Actor We love it when actors transform themselves for a role, that’s half the battle right there. Matthew McConaughey had two great roles this year (Mud, Dallas Buyers Club) and he’s a cinch this year. I’d like to see Chiwetel Ejiofor win, if only because presenters have been practicing his name for weeks! Other nominees: Bruce Dern (Nebraska), Leonardo DiCaprio (The Wolf of Wall Street), Christian Bale (American Hustle). Inexplicably shut out was Robert Redford, for his riveting solo voyage in All Is Lost. Also absent: Michael B. Jordan (Fruitvale Station) and Tom Hanks, despite his best work in years (Captain Phillips). ■ Best Actress Sandra Bullock may have had a shot, had she not so recently won an Oscar for The Blind Side. But Cate Blanchett is unbeatable, even by Meryl Streep, a nominee 18 times over. Also up: Amy Adams (American Hustle), Judi Dench (Philomena). Snubbed: Oprah Winfrey, along with everyone else in The Butler. ■ Best Supporting Actor No suspense here either:

Jared Leto all the way, for his poignant performance in Dallas Buyers Club, though I would’ve voted for Fassbender’s unforgettably psychotic performance in 12Years A Slave. Fellow nominees are Bradley

actor pushed him to bring his music to the stage. Lavallee released his debut album in 2000. His second album, Green Dress, was nominated for a 2005 Juno Award for Aboriginal Recording of the Year. In addition to his 2010 Juno nod, he picked up awards for Best Folk Acoustic Album, Best Rock Album and Best Male Artist at the Canadian Aboriginal Music Awards that same year. When it comes to the writing process, Lavallee says words usually come second to music. “Lyrics are hard to write, that’s the thing I struggle with the most,” he says. “Music comes so naturally and I often write the music first.” His lyrics are inspired by life and love, he continues, with an emphasis on storytelling. “Just because I’m an aboriginal singer/ songwriter I don’t really want to have to make it political or have to be writing about something that’s too serious because I always want to try to keep music and songs a bit fun,” he says, adding, “I really want them to have some sort of depth but still be light.” Lavallee’s fourth album, which he is planning to title Rock ’n’ Roll Indian Cowboy, is set for release at the end of summer 2014.

Pilates for life
In 1934, when Joseph Pilates published his ground-breaking book, Your Health: A Corrective System of Exercising That Revolutionizes the Entire Field of Physical Education, most people didn’t fully grasp the importance of using a regular fitness regime to promote health and prolong life.
Originally practised by the few in small studios, today the Pilates system is used all over the world by millions of people every day. Deanna Lupis has been a Pilates instructor since 1990. Owner of North Shore Pilates ilates No Now,, a fully certified Pilates studio, she has helped hundreds of North Shore residents
improve their health, fitness and quality of life and has recently moved her studio to #31225 Keith Road, North Vancouver, in the Pro Arte Dance Studio.
“The new location offers beautiful high ceilings and the white floor adds to the crisp, clean look,” says Deanna.“There is plenty of room for our Cadillac, Chairs, Ladder Barrel and smaller barrels, bikes and seven reformers. We have a great setup so that as soon as a client enters the studio they can put away their things and get right into the class.” he location takes The advantage of an interesting esting synergy. “The he two businesses workk well alongside each other. The atmospher atmosphere walking to our studio through the dance centre is positive and friendly. When we come into class, we aree prepared. Our classes are small ensuring that ever ery client gets individual attention. The he instructor is not working out with you, they are
watching your form, modifying exercises if it is required and offering numerous visuals for you to find a better connection. We encourage feedback so that we can always move you in a positive direction.”
At North Shore Pilates Now their comprehensive faciities will provide you with a whole body workout. “We offer Pilates equipment, mat, xtend barre and spin/core classes. Pilates reformer group classes are very popular. The reformer is a piece of equipment which allows participants to work their entire body and challenge core stability while the arms and legs are moving. It focuses on resistance exercises that leave you feeling stronger and definitely more flexible.” If you are looking at a new fitness and wellness program always make sure you check the certification of the facility and instructors. Green Bride created for the entire group From page 14 that we were each separately on in terms of investing in a contemporary dance career that was fulfilling and that was challenging,” says Finkelman Berkett, who serves as the company’s coartistic director. “That kind of work was not happening in L.A. and so we started BodyTraffic in an effort to bring internationally renowned choreographers to L.A. to make work on a Los-Angeles-based group. We’re a repertory company, we’re commissioning works by choreographers with very distinctive voices.” BodyTraffic plans to showcase three of those distinctive voices this weekend as the company is slated to perform a world premiere by Hofesh Shechter, and two Canadian premieres by Barak Marshall and Richard Siegal. Finkelman Berkett is dancing in all three works. She and her company mates arrived in Vancouver last Saturday and have been spending long days working with Shechter to complete the choreography on his piece thanks to a Chutzpah! Festival residency. Finkelman Berkett is grateful to Mary-Louise Albert, artistic managing director of the Chutzpah! Festival, for the opportunity.
“The fact that she believes in our work and she believes that we should be given time in a theatre to finalize the piece and to work out the technical aspects, that’s a huge vote of confidence. We’re thrilled to have the opportunity to be here and to be working on what we love,” she says. The Israeli, Londonbased choreographer’s new work is described as taking a dark look at the powers that steer us in today’s society and was created for six dancers — three males and three females. It also features a soundtrack composed by Shechter. “The style and the movement vocabulary, really none of us have ever dabbled in, but we just dove in so wholeheartedly and we really have pushed ourselves to achieve what Hofesh wants. To hear Hofesh say that we are presenting his work in the way it was intended, means the world to us,” says Finkelman Berkett. “It’s been wildly fulfilling as a dancer to push yourself to feel like you’re exploring some new ability in your body. You’re finding further extremes that you didn’t think you could reach, both emotionally and physically,” she adds. BodyTraffic was featured at the Chutzpah! Festival two years ago, performing
a work by Barak Marshall, also Israeli, and based in L.A.The work, Monger, had been created for the Suzanne Dellal Centre in Tel Aviv, Israel and they were the American company chosen to mount it.This time around, Body Traffic commissioned a new work by Marshall and will open their Chutzpah! Festival performance with his And at Midnight, the Green Bride Floated Through theVillage Square. Finkelman Berkett plays the green bride in the piece, created for the entire 10-member company. The work is based on the neighbours of Marshall’s mother’s family in Aden, Yemen. BodyTraffic will close their Chutzpah! Festival performance with o2joy, which has “become kind of like our calling card,” says Finkelman Berkett. “It’s something that we love to share with audiences because we feel like they really get a sense of our personalities. They really get a window into the family that is BodyTraffic,” she adds. Created by Richard Siegal, an American who lives in Paris, France, o2joy is completely different from the other works on the program and is an upbeat piece for five dancers, centered around American jazz standards.

YOUR NORTH SHORE GUIDE
to FASHION & STYLE
A sweater for every style Dear Mattie: How do I dress up my sweater? Looking for new ideas in Capilano
Follow us on Twitter @NSNLook
Dear Capilano: Sweaters are very trendy right now. It is the look of the sweater that is making the impact. That look comes from the overall ensemble. The sweater ensemble includes layering, bottoms and bling. At least two stylish pieces are needed to mix with the sweater and one piece of bling, which stands out. Although many ladies are wearing this look, depending on how you accessorize, it can be unique. The layered look has taken off this transition season. The pieces are all practical. The unique ensembles create a modern look. Pulling off this look of wearing many pieces together with your sweater has the feel of fashion luxury. I have broken down the styling of the layering ensembles because there are so many options to drift towards, I don’t want you to go overboard. There are two trends that are consistent with all the styling of the layered looks. Add pastels or a graphic print and you will have a starting point with each of these looks. The first look is the vintage, preppy look that now has a contemporary feel. The look is collegiate. It is a young-at-heart and casual look. There is a striped shirt with a collar or a long sleeve T-shirt under a belted cardigan, chunky cable-knit sweater, or wool vest, which can be plain or have a Fair Isle pattern. I am also seeing new funky knit patterns. This sweater look is loose, but not oversized. It looks best with all styles of jeans
Sit and Sleep Center
and even a skating skirt. Add a light-weight printed scarf with contrasting and complementary colours with hoop earrings and you have nailed this look. The next look that I really like is the glamorous look. Many ladies feel that the sweater is frumpy. It is not. It can be sophisticated. The knit is more luxurious as these sweaters are mohair, angora, cashmere and silk. This sweater is fitted. From an exaggerated argyle to pastel pink to animal print, this look is complemented with a leather skirt or pant. This look is a textured one. Gold bling with a feather or faux mink scarf will pull this ensemble together. There is another look out there that is casual and brings us back to the days of grunge. Start with a fitted graphic T-shirt and layer up with a loose-fitting denim or plaid shirt. Denim shirts have patterns and plaid shirts have many colours of checks. The layers in this look are contrasting colours. The sweater is an oversized cardigan or cable-knit used as an outerwear piece. Leggings, in a colour (not black), with or without a graphic print is how you finish this look. Don’t forget the 10 crafty bracelets and the bright beanie. It is very important to remember that old stretchedout pieces do not enhance this look. To create this modern look, everything must be crisp. When you take the time, the result will be a classic look with a unique twist. Adieu, Mattie Mattie is a freelance writer and fashion expert. Reach her on her Facebook page Mattie-a-laMode.

In this pastiest of seasons, many a complexion could use a little pick-me-up. Fortunately there are a couple of cheeky new products on the market that promise to do just that. effect. One layer provides a natural, barely-there look. Brush on a few more strokes for added vibrancy. Meanwhile, Revlon recently introduced a full collection of blushes. Among them is Revlon Cream Blush (suggested retail price: $11.95), available in four shades (Pinched, Charmed, Flushed and Coral Reef). The product is lightweight and easy to blend with the fingertips. The result is a soft satin finish and, because this product is cream-based, it has staying power. For more intense colour and even longer wear, Revlon suggests applying the cream blush first, then layering on a powder blush.

Ghosts, time no match for these classics
they thinking? It’s certainly striking. Striking, that is, in the manner of a frying pan to the face. When it first showed its squinty schnozz, the Cherokee generated all kinds of hilarious jests, jeers, and japes. Having seen the thing in the flesh, I actually kinda like it. I know, I know: maybe it’s me who needs the bifocals. Here’s the thing though: in the Trailhawk trim, with big burly boots and plenty of plastic cladding, the Cherokee looks like something that could have
Bullitt. The Dukes of Hazard. The Blues Brothers. The list of movies where the car steals the show is nearly endless. However, there are two instances where the car stands out even more than usual, two examples where a rare vehicle is made even rarer by the application of movie magic. Three decades ago, we were introduced to two special vehicles that captured our imagination while bustin’ ghosts and disappearing through time when they hit 88 miles per hour: Ecto-1 and the DeLorean time machine. Of the two, Back To The Future’s DeLorean is probably the betterknown car. Odds are, you’ve seen a DeLorean in the steel, as they’re not completely uncommon. And if you’ve attended any of the bigger car shows on the West Coast, you’ll surely stumble across one set up with the rocket-style exhausts in the rear, and the R2-D2-like timejumping equipment. The regular DeLorean should have been more of a success than it was. Conceived of by entrepreneur and former GM golden boy John DeLorean, the DeLorean Motor Company only

Here is a very important vehicle. And judging from the squint, it’s forgotten its bifocals. Kidding aside, the Cherokee represents a vital sales segment, both for Jeep/ Chrysler, and for their new Fiat owners. Based on the same Italian underpinnings as the Dodge Dart, if this crossover does well, it’ll have the profits flooding in. Overall, you could claim Jeep’s been having a bit of a renaissance of late. They’ve had the good sense not to fiddle with the Wrangler’s burly character too much, and the Grand Cherokee is frankly excellent, a sort of

Americanized Range Rover. The SRT version is possibly my favourite SUV of all time. Further down the range, there’s the Liberty and the
Patriot/Compass, vehicles which are just OK, and tend to look a bit too much of a step down from the Grand Cherokee. With the resurrection of the Cherokee nameplate, not seen in more than a decade, Jeep hopes to offer a smaller version of their successful full-sizer. Never mind the way this rig’s giving you a suspicious glare — it’s how it fares from behind the wheel that’s important. Design Obviously, we first have to talk a little more about that front end. What in the name of Phillip J. Fry were

rolled right off the set of the original Robocop. It’s futuristic and polarizing, and I’m sure you’ve already got an opinion on it. My Limited Trim tester came with 18-inch polished alloy wheels, and I will say that the more basic versions of the Cherokee can’t pull off the scowl quite as well as those with the beefier
Environment On the inside, the Cherokee benefits from a great deal of parts sharing across the Chrysler lineup. While I’ve heard other colleagues complain about the odd bit of flimsiness in the plastics and stitching issues here and there, my particular tester didn’t seem to have too many foibles. As this is an all-new vehicle, I’d be inclined to watch carefully for any teething issues if you’re picking one out among several on the lot. However, Jeep delayed the launch of their new crossover significantly, focussing on tweaking things based on early reviewer feedback, and this mostly shines through in the Cherokee’s interior. It looks good, and the infotainment controls are among the best on the market. It’s worth noting, for instance, that both Maserati and Ferrari use similar versions of the Uconnect system, with its big, bright icons, and easyto-use interface. Compared to others in the class, this Jeep is not quite the utilitarian box the old Cherokee was. It’s fine for passenger space, especially as it’s equipped with a sliding rear seat, but the overall cargo room is smaller than either an Escape or a CR-V. As a Limited, this tester came fully equipped with leather and the highest grades of interior trim, and was actually a fairly snazzy ride. Both the volumeselling Japanese vehicles in this segment, the CR-V and RAV4, seem to have

a greater amount of hard plastics. The Cherokee does look like a little Grand Cherokee from behind the wheel. Performance It also drives like one, but not all the time. As mentioned, this crossover sits on a Fiat platform rather than the Grand Cherokee’s Mercedes-Benz underpinnings, and it feels it. Fiat only officially sells one car in this country, the funky little 500, which is available in a number of trims, up to and including the hilarious turbocharged Abarth. The Cherokee is more like the base car, with somewhat numb steering, a ride tuned for comfort rather than speed, and an overall woolly and isolated drive. That’s fine.We already have several crossovers that pretend convincingly to be sportscars, from the Mazda CX-5 to the Ford Escape. Comfort and smoothness are favoured in the Cherokee over corner carving, and thus it’ll probably appeal to a broader range of tastes. However, a little more feel could be wished for, and slightly better behaviour from the nine-speed automatic transmission. You read that right: nine speeds. Wasn’t eight supposed to be enough? Is this thing a crossover or a mountain bike? If ideally programmed, the Cherokee’s ZF ninespeed auto would be capable of holding the engine in an econ-friendly mode well past 120 kilometres per hour. Lego DeLorean, Ecto-1 coming soon
From page 35
made the one vehicle, the DMC-12. Having been involved in the genesis of the Pontiac GTO, DeLorean could claim to have been present at the birth of the American muscle car. He worked his was up the General Motors promotion ladder, and in 1973 decided to found his own company. The recipe was all there. The design was penned by Giorgetto Giugiaro, the genius behind the BMW M1, the VW Golf, and the Alfa Romeo Giuletta. The chassis was fettled by Colin Chapman of Lotus, who based it heavily off the mid-engined Esprit. Nearly $200 million in development dollars was supplied by the government of Northern Ireland to entice DeLorean to set up shop there, and he did so with the best equipment available. Renault built the factory, and supplied the smalldisplacement V-6 and gearbox for the car. Other funds for setting up the company came from celebrity sources like Johnny Carson and Sammy Davis Jr. Production didn’t start until 1981, but it took just one year for DeLorean to get into hot water. Busted by the FBI for allegedly trafficking in cocaine, DeLorean would eventually beat the rap, but not before the company’s image was irrevocably tarnished. There were other problems too. While most people think of the DMC-12’s stainless-steel panels as indicative of a heavy machine, it was actually fairly light, about the same curb weight as a current Scion FR-S, and the 150 horsepower V-6 engine provided decent performance. With handling by Lotus, it should have had sportscar performance to go with those gullwinged looks. Regrettably, U.S.-spec catalytic converters choked horsepower by a factor of 20 h.p., and the front suspension height was inexplicably raised from Lotus-spec. The DMC-12 ended up putting out the sort of specs you can get out of a Nissan Versa today. Somewhere around 9,000 DeLoreans were built before the company went bankrupt, and a few afterwards using leftover parts. Five of them were
used in the filming of the Back To The Future trilogy, and basically ensured that the DeLorean would gain cult status despite its modest successes. It was one of those cases of perfect carcasting. After the script was modified from a stationary time machine, the idea of a DeLorean as a time-jumping car was the filmmaker’s first choice. It wasn’t supposed to look polished: as Doc Brown put the thing together in his backyard, the time-machine DeLorean was intended to look home-built. Parts were sourced from electrical supplies stores, and the “nuclear reactor” was actually fabricated out of a Dodge’s hubcap. The first car from the first movie (there were initially three) is not just a survivor, but the most-filmed DeLorean ever, featured in all kinds of extra features and documentaries. Known as the A car, it was the most detailed version, and had a long and happy life in the production of the movies, on display at Universal Studios, and has just undergone a complete restoration. Our other wacky movie car didn’t get the same star treatment. Ecto1 started life as a bare chassis, sold to the MillerMeteor coachbuilding company in the late 1950s. It emerged as a dualpurpose ambulance/hearse called the Futura Duplex, wearing those Cadillac fins with pride as it ferried folks either to the hospital or to the graveyard. Cadillac’s commercial chassis industry is a bit of an interesting automotive footnote. An extended and strengthened chassis was built and sold to any of a half-dozen custom coachbuilders, who built the nation’s ambulances and limousines in the days before regulations required a switch to heavy-duty trucks and vans. In smaller towns the ambulance sometimes needed to also function as the hearse, so the Duplexes could be switched in function by the removal of the siren and the addition of some sombre interior curtains. They were very rare cars: in 1959, a little more than 2,000 chassis were sold, which is divided up between dedicated ambulances, hearses, limos, the very-rare flower
cars, and the Duplexes. Extremely few survivors remain today. There were two cars used in the filming of Ghostbusters, although only one of them was actually bought and converted by the studio. The other, the blackprimered car first seen as the before shot while Dan Aykroyd’s Ray lists off a litany of work to be done — brakes, muffler, rings, “a little wiring” — was rented at first. The second car, which
would be transformed into Ecto-1 by the work of a hardware designer named Steven Dane, would be the only movie car made. It was at first supposed to be black and menacing, but was soon changed to the cheery white-andred so that it’d show up during night filming; this was surely a better fit for the Ghostbuster’s comedy theme. The sequel saw a second vehicle fabbed up, but there was no backup for the original — Ecto-1 was one-of-one.
After the movie was made, it languished in a back lot before being fully restored for the 25th anniversary of the film. Since then, it has again been sitting outside on the Sony Pictures back lot, baked by the Californian sun and weathered by the elements. As a third car was built especially for the Universal Studios park, the original Ecto-1 was rather neglected. Worse, ’59 Cadillac Miller-Meteor’s are crazily rare, so it’s a
bit sad that the car is not better preserved. As of June of this year, you’ll be able to park a Lego version of either one of these iconic rides on your desk, or pick them up for your kid and explain the classics to them. For budding Peter Venkmans or Marty McFlys, they’re just the things to push the imagination past 88 miles per hour. Brendan McAleer is a freelance writer and automotive enthusiast. a tendency to shift with abruptness, and maybe a tad too often. The 3.2-litre V-6 engine can’t really be held to blame here. It’s not crazy powerful, but does have a worthy 271 horsepower if only a modest 239 foot-pounds of torque. It does feel slightly less grunty than other offerings, particularly the turbocharged EcoBoost offerings from Ford, but it’s a durable powerplant, and quite smooth. on the way.The electric power steering and the slight sponginess of the brakes are unlikely to change. Having said that, the Cherokee is entirely competent, and then there’s what happens when you take it even mildly off-road. It’s a tank. Jeep’s active drive system has the ability to adapt to nearly any terrain, and the chassis is composed and unstickable even in the non-trail-rated version. The Trailhawk looks the toughest, but this city slicker Limited could quite easily follow a Wrangler down even a difficult trail. Frankly, I’d almost call the Cherokee’s capabilities an unfortunate temptation. On the run to pick up the kids from school? You might take a shortcut right up the side of Grouse. Picking up the groceries? Why not check the back-country for morels instead of shelling out for them? Add in a 2,000 kilogram towing capacity and you’ve got the makings of a Jeep-serious utility vehicle with relatively smooth and composed road manners. When the going gets rough, the Cherokee proves itself worthy of the seven-hole Jeep grille it wears out front. Features

Cost can get high when extra goodies are added From page 40
Like the Grand Cherokee, this smaller Jeep has an overwhelming amount of tech on tap.The 8.4-inch touchscreen display pairs with a customizable gauge cluster, and voice commands are easy to use. For safety, available features include the usual blind spot monitoring and lane departure warning, but also extend to automatic cruise control and adaptive high beams. The $1,795 technology package also includes forward collision mitigation and parking assist. The only drawback to all the goodies available is the way the cost for this compact crossover can shoot up. Equipped with a luxury group including power liftgate, nine-speaker audio, towing package, and a dual-pane sunroof, this tester Cherokee cracked the $43,000 mark. That’s quite a bit. Mind you, it’s only the cost of getting a bit wild with the options list. Keep your Cherokee a little less grand and it’s competitive with others in the segment. Fuel economy is not necessarily a strong point, with an 11.1
litres/100 kilometres in-city rating and 7.7 l/100 km on the highway. The Cherokee will struggle to hit either figure, and the gap between V-6 and four-cylinder is fairly minimal. Green light Excellent off-road capability; well-designed, upscale interior; polarizing styling; available tech.
Stop sign Numb steering; expensive options; thirsty engine; small cargo capacity. The checkered flag Worthy of wearing the Jeep badge.
Subaru Forester ($25,995) Capable of taking on the Cherokee no matter what the road conditions are like, the Forester is no soft-roader. Available with a 2.0-litre turbocharged engine that brings considerable punch, it’s also even quicker on the tarmac. Inside, however, the Forester just doesn’t have the panache of the Cherokee’s polished interior and high tech. With the Subaru, you’re spending the money on the powertrain, and that’s fine, but even the leatherequipped models aren’t what you’d call luxurious. mcaleeronwheels@gmail.com
Competitors Mazda CX-5 ($22,995) If you’re looking for a fun-to-drive crossover, here it is.The CX-5 is as capable as a CR-V or RAV-4, but considerably better to drive, and extremely fuel efficient. Unfortunately, a 2.5-litre four-cylinder is as big as the powerplant gets here, which makes for modest towing. While it’s capable enough off-road, if your cottage is atop a mountain, the Cherokee is better at handling the rough stuff.

These cars are so money ■ Million-Dollar Classics by Martin Derrick and Simon Clay (Chartwell Books, 192 pages) $14.99
Beauty may be in the eye of the beholder but price is determined by what people are willing to pay. When it comes to those unique and rare items the value can suddenly skyrocket. In the world of collectable automobiles there are plenty that
have exceeded the one million dollar mark, some several times over. Fifty of these incredibly valuable machines are presented in this collection. Starting with the 1884 De Dion Bouton et Trepardoux Dos-aDos, which is believed to have won the world’s first motor race in 1887, there are many historically significant cars. The 1937 Bugatti Type 57S represents the find of the century when in 2007 it
was discovered in a garage where Lord Howe had locked it away in 1955. The Bugatti was sold in 2009 for more than three million dollars. Every car is described in detail, chronicling its history, current status and value. They are all beautifully photographed, each one shown in a series
of images. From the simple engines of the earliest models to the incredible power of the 1996 McLaren F1, these stunning examples of the best designs of their era speak passionately to those who can afford them and give the rest of us something to dream about. — Terry Peters

Here’s where hot rod magic happens ■ Hot Rod Garages by Peter Vincent (Motorbooks, 220 pages) $32.99 Despite the fact that every year rust takes another bite out of potential restorations, the interest in custom cars continues to grow. The vintage bodywork of many derelict cars from the 1930s, ’40s and ’50s retains so much their original shape that they are prime candidates for custom builders. From these oftentattered remains a beautiful hot rod emerges with smooth curves flowing beneath a silky paint finish that hides something big, chromeplated and powerful beneath the hood. Peter Vincent celebrates 18 creators of
hot rod muscle in this beautiful look inside their workshops and garages. Both their own cars and those of their customers are photographed and presented in that environment. From backyards to multi-bayed buildings, the passion of these builders is always at the forefront. Good enough is not an expression in their vocabulary and their drive for perfection has resulted in breathtaking automobiles in a wide range of styles. The single-handed work of Pete Eastwood is given equal attention as the talented staff at Roy Brizio Street Rods. Many of the garages featured are one-man operations and each one has a unique story. — Terry Peters
