listed off dozens of ideas that would make the area between Waterfront Park and St. Georges Avenue “Canada’s best gathering place.” After much handwringing in recent years over what to do with the land, city council hired Brooks, a destination marketing expert, to help run a process

that would take public input and turn it into a vision for the prime location. Brooks gave his presentation summarizing more than 1,000 survey responses, emails and phone calls plus consultation with local stakeholders to a packed council chamber Tuesday night. “Wouldn’t it be great if

people over there at Canada Place were looking over here and they have something to see that makes them say ‘Wow, I want to take that SeaBus over there, because that looks really cool,’” Brooks said. Brooks’ vision for Lot 5, which will now be branded “the Shipyards” includes a 15,000-square foot ice

A former West Vancouver Police officer says he was fired from the department as retaliation for filing harassment complaints against his supervisors. But the police chief disagrees. Todd Mosher was a West Vancouver police officer for 12 years until he was fired in 2011. Mosher maintains he was fired because he was critical of practices at the police department, including favouritism for some officers and harassment of others. As for the stern of the HMS Flamborough Head, which council was prepared to scrap but then asked Brooks to consider including in the plan after protests from heritage advocates, there just wasn’t a spot for it anywhere close to where it sits today. “Lot 5 is about people. That means scale.We couldn’t put it there.We thought about making it a stage.We talked to sound people, lighting people. It just doesn’t work. It’s just too big. It does not scale to people,” he said. “We tried every way we could.” But Brooks added, there’s no reason the stern wouldn’t work if placed and repurposed on the shoreline of Waterfront Park. The Lower Lonsdale business district is also in need of some serious spitshine, which Brooks was also tasked with devising. “I’ve got to tell you, coming and getting off the SeaBus, your ﬁrst impression of North Vancouver is about as poor

decoration on the walls, rather than demolishing the TransLink facility and starting over.

The commerce culture of Lower Lonsdale also needs to change so businesses are open after 6 p.m. — when

Beyond that, Brooks said the LoLo business district needs beautiﬁcation, benches, entertainers, more patio space even if it comes at the expense of parking, and a gateway marking the entrance to the district at Lonsdale and Third. Lest anyone be carried away by thoughts of romantic ferris wheel rides or Shakespeare under a tent, Brooks’ presentation included the rough costs — about $30 million, not including the ferris wheel or moving the Flamborough Head. Seattle’s ferris wheel cost $20 million but it is privately owned and made $11 million in its ﬁrst year, Brooks said, noting he would not expect council to take it on solo. “For the money, this will give you more bang for your buck than anything else you can do, period,” he said. Once operational, the Shipyards should generate $2- to $3-million in revenues for the city, and the costs could be offset with corporate sponsorships and donations and the project could be phased in over about 10 years. Former West Vancouver police chief Kash Heed says problems of sexual harassment, racism and bullying that existed before his tenure at the West Vancouver Police Department still exist within the organization. “It’s not just former employees,” who are talking about the problems, said Heed. He said several members of the West Vancouver Police Department have spoken to him in the past six months about continued inappropriate behaviour in the organization. Heed said those people are reluctant to come forward with their concerns over fear of retaliation. On Monday, West Vancouver Police Chief Peter Lepine announced he will step down from the top job at the department after

ﬁve years on the job. Lepine — who succeeded Heed in the top position — said his decision was unrelated to the public airing of an employee survey which pointed to plummeting morale at the department. It also came a day after a news story was published detailing allegations of harassment. This week, both Lepine and West Vancouver Mayor Michael Smith characterized most of those incidents as dating back about a decade. “That was a very long time ago,” said Lepine. The West Vancouver Police Association, which represents unionized police ofﬁcers at the department, also issued a statement saying “many of the comments made in the media by former employees are not representative of See Bold page 5

a number of internal evaluations and letters from the public — some of which were provided to the North Shore News. But starting around 2009, “I would show up for work and the reports I was writing weren’t good enough anymore,” he said. He said around that time he was asked by one colleague, “What’s it like to have a target on your back?” “It was clearly a case of a different set of rules for Todd Mosher,” he said. Former West Vancouver police Chief Kash Heed described Mosher as someone who had the right character traits to be a good police ofﬁcer but who sometimes rubbed people in the department the wrong way by questioning decisions. “He is not a follower,” said Heed. Mosher said when he was questioned about driving to North Vancouver in his police

The other officer denied the on-the-clock trysts; Mosher was told he was guilty of deceitful action. Mosher said after his firing, he appealed to both the West Vancouver Police

Board and Office of Police Complaints Commissioner about how he was treated — but that his complaints fell on deaf ears. “They haven’t dealt with it,” he said. West Vancouver Police Chief Peter Lepine disagrees with Mosher’s description of what happened. “He’s being very selective in terms of the information he’s providing,” said Lepine. Lepine said he brought in an outside investigator — Vince Ready — who spent two years looking into Mosher’s allegations before concluding no inappropriate actions had been taken. The Office of the Police Complaints Commissioner — which oversees internal discipline — reached the same conclusion, said Lepine. Mosher said he’s not claiming to be an angel. “I’ve made mistakes in my career,” he said. But, he adds, “I’ve never done anything to warrant my firing.” “I have never beaten

anyone up... I’ve never driven drunk ...” His union, he said, “didn’t help me much. .. If any of those guys stick their neck out for me they would have been the next example.” Detective Tom Wolf von Gudenberg, president of the West Vancouver Police Association, says the union did provide support to Mosher. Wolf von Gudenberg said the union was satisfied due process was followed in the case. Mosher said being fired from the police department has taken its toll on him. Ever since he was a little boy, he wanted to be a police officer, he said. “It’s a rewarding career. They’ve taken that away from me. It’s affected me financially. I’ve lost friendships over it.” Mosher said he’s glad to see issues of harassment within the department are now getting a public airing. “I’m not the only one,” he said. “I’m the only one putting my name to it.”

What should we change?’ all of a sudden, the whole thing is going to come apart,” he said. “You’re never going to get anywhere.” If council were to get staff working on developing the business plan, securing funding and getting architectural designs, there’s no reason why the Shipyards portion could not be open by 2016, Brooks said. Brooks plans to present council with his ﬁnal report with a “to do list” on the vision within a month.

Heed said he was shocked by the recent results of the employee survey. “I have never seen surveys that showed that level of dissatisfaction with the upper echelon,” he said. “That’s very concerning.” This week, both Attorney General Suzanne Anton and WorkSafeBC announced they will be looking into

what’s happening in the department. Megan Johnston, a spokeswoman with WorkSafeBC, said an inspector would visit the police department to ensure compliance with anti-bullying regulations. Heed warned it will take bold moves to solve the problems. That could even involve merging the West Vancouver Police Department with the Vancouver Police Department, he suggested. Lepine said the department is working on the issues identiﬁed in the employee survey.

t’s ambitious with a capital A. A skating rink, ferris wheel, amphitheatre and dozens of other amenities that could permanently redeﬁne the City of North Vancouver’s waterfront and Lower Lonsdale. The sheer size means, no doubt, some will regard it as trouble with a capital T, but we applaud the vision put forward by Roger Brooks, even if we have big questions about costs. Brooks warned council not to take this out for more public consultation as it could put the entire project in jeopardy. That’s not going to go over well here, especially during an election year. But he has a point. There has already been input from more than 1,000 people and there isn’t exactly a Plan B unless it is another decade of leaving the area

generally barren. This is the advice taxpayers paid for. Some may ﬁnd Brooks’ plan a little too “Disney,” which it arguably is. But by nature of its massive scale, this plan has something in it for everyone, whether they’re interested in arts and culture, physical activity, history, shopping, a quiet sit-down in a garden or some, heaven forbid, good clean fun. Lower Lonsdale is coming into its own and it’s time the Shipyards started living up to its potential by becoming a public space we can be proud of — somewhere we opt to spend our time and invite the world to share in. Council avoids action on this plan, or some close variation of it, at the peril of its businesses, residents and visitors, as well as its own legacy.

Ferry service cuts spark Bowen petition Dear Editor: Why is my MLA afraid to represent me by not conﬁrming he will raise a caucus item? Just because he is a rookie MLA and may be ambitious, how does he know that he is really representing his constituents when he does not want to raise a caucus item on my behalf? Like others on Bowen Island, along with those living in the coastal communities, and those who have families or homes or connections to the island(s), I am concerned about the recent service level cuts by BC ferries. The liberal government was afraid to implement their BC ferry service level cuts before election as they did not want voter backlash. Granted, this

is a smart political move; however, if any of the currently elected MLAs were to be living on Bowen Island, would they not feel differently — this is the question, no? When I started my personal petition against the BC ferry service levels cuts on Bowen I thought I’d just get a few hundred signatures as I was canvassing on my own. As things turned out, although I have limited time and resources, approximately 1,300 Bowen Islanders of voting age signed my petition, and it will be presented to the B.C. legislature hopefully this month. I have never been politically active nor have I ever started a petition. This time, however,

the government has got “just” a little too far in its dictatorship leadership style, whereby only cuts are the name of the game; fairness does not even enter into their equation no matter what anyone else may state. The message from Victoria is clear: all families do not count — only the families that live in highly populated areas where

The funny thing — I’m embarrassed to admit — is that I voted Liberal, but this does not seem to matter as I am just one person. Something is wrong here with how our political system is. Green MLA charts own way in Victoria He doesn’t get a lot of face time in the legislature, but Green Party MLA Andrew Weaver is becoming one of the more intriguing provincial politicians in B.C. and the legislature session that is just under way should given him a small platform to demonstrate just that. The government and the Official Opposition naturally dominate most of the proceedings.They have the most members, and have a much larger platform to air their views. But in many respects, the actions and words coming from both the government and the Official Opposition are rather predictable. The government oversells its message, and reject pretty well everything the opposition members have to say (which is frequently over-the-top rhetoric). Weaver, given his unique status, has an opportunity to be heard above the clichéridden yelling match that often passes for debate in the legislature chamber. You can be sure that the B.C. Liberals, still flush with confidence after that unexpected election win, will continue to talk about the potential of an LNG industry and the need for

View from the Ledge economic growth.The NDP, still bruised from its election loss and unable to create an inspiring leadership race, will paint all B.C. Liberal policies with the same brush: they are bad, mean and hypocritical. Weaver created a bit of a stir in the summer when he actually voted in favor of the B.C. Liberal budget, because it was balanced (on paper at least). A number of NDP MLAs denounced him for doing so, but his reasoning was a balanced budget is what British Columbians had endorsed in the election campaign and who was he to say no to that? Besides,Weaver argued, what’s wrong with a balanced budget anyway? He seemed genuinely

puzzled why the New Democrats would have such a different view of things. And herein lies the difference between Weaver and the NDP: he doesn’t take positions based almost entirely on whether the governing party likes them or not.This independent streak that “tilts” green can set him apart. The most recent example of this was Weaver’s public backing of building a refinery to refine bitumen from the Alberta oil sands. In his view, this was a compromise position that addressed environmental concerns about oil flowing from the oil sands and still allowed Canadian energy companies access to new markets. In taking this position, Weaver has separated himself from those who want to simply shut down the oil sands industry, period. He favors “slowing down” production with new regulations, not stopping it entirely. “I like to think the Green Party as a science-based, evidence-based common sense party,”Weaver recently told the Prince George Citizen newspaper. “It’s a party that realizes that we need gasoline in our cars

but we also need to have a strategy to wean ourselves off that.” Predictably,Weaver has enraged some New Democrats. One NDP MLA, Doug Routley, attacked Weaver on social media, calling him a “hypocrite” for his views (and also falsely saying Weaver supports the Site C dam proposal, which he does not). But Weaver is charting a careful path through some very sensitive territory and he seems to be having a far easier, and effective, time of it than the NDP and that may explain why he has developed a knack for getting under the skin of New Democrats. For example,Weaver has spoken in favor of independent power projects, noting their clean energy production and dismissing criticism of them as coming largely from public sector unions (which support, of course, the NDP). As Weaver continues this approach of pragmatic

compromise, look for the NDP to become increasingly uncomfortable with the upstart MLA from Oak Bay. Of course, Weaver does run the risk of alienating hard-core “green” voters. One of his constituents stopped me on the street the other day to express his anger with Weaver’s support for an oil reﬁnery and his refusal to outright condemn the tar sands, but that’s not the kind of person that got Weaver elected in May. Weaver received more than 10,700 votes in the last election, an increase of

more than 8,000 over the Green vote in 2009.Those are folks who likely voted for the B.C. Liberals or the NDP in the past, and I wouldn’t characterize them as environmental protesters. And Weaver seems to know his reelection depends on retaining the support of those disaffected New Democrats and B.C. NorthVancouver residents will soon be able to speak their piece about a new highrise building planned for central Lonsdale. City of North Vancouver council voted Monday night to hold a public hearing for FDG Property Management’s proposal for a 15-storey tower at 161 East Keith Rd. If approved, the project will include 52 condos and 41 rental suites, which must remain rental for the building’s lifespan. Council has been seeking to beef up the city’s supply of purpose-built rental housing since most existing rental buildings were built between the ’50s and ’70s when senior governments offered incentives and today, those buildings are at risk for redevelopment. Because developers are less inclined to build rental units when

stratas result in a much faster return on investment, the city allows higher density in a project in exchange for market rental apartments. In order to create a lot large enough to allow the density proposed for the 93 units, the developer will have to buy the adjacent boulevard from the city at a cost of $1.8 million. The land must be kept as a boulevard and be improved and maintained at FDG’s expense. The new tower will come at the expense of an existing 12-unit rental building from 1954 that is now in “relatively poor” condition, according to a city staff report.The building’s tenants will be offered four months’ notice before eviction, one month of free rent, free access to moving vans and boxes, and assistance ﬁnding a new place to live, according to the report. But the project will be by no means a slam-dunk at council if reservations expressed by council members Monday night are any indication of coming opposition.

North Shore Rescue members were led astray from a rescue attempt this week by a prank call. NSR members were looking for an out-ofbounds snowboarder on Cypress Mountain Monday evening when 9-1-1 received a short, mufﬂed call from someone sounding distressed. Police traced the call to Cypress and NSR members spilt up to ﬁnd the new caller.They later tracked down the phone’s owner, a 15-year-old North Vancouver boy. “He’s very apologetic. He’s insisting he doesn’t know who or how the call was made with his phone,” said Const. Jeff Palmer, West Vancouver police spokesman. Andrea Kiesser, a staff member at Hollyburn Family Services Society in North Vancouver, is being recognized for her contributions to the Seniors at Housing Risk Program. As a recipient of the Bhayana Family Foundation Dedication Award, a nomination by United Way Lower Mainland, Kiesser will be honoured at the annual United Way Community Spirit Awards on March 11. The Seniors at Housing Risk Program provides housing outreach support to North Shore seniors 55 and older who are homeless or in danger of imminent housing loss. Over the past year, the program has served more than 300 North Shore seniors at risk of homelessness — 122 seniors were placed in more stable housing and 239 were prevented from pending evictions or housing loss. “We receive around 20 calls a day from North

He’s a little bit country, he’s a little bit rock ’n’ roll. He’s also a little bit folk, a little bit roots, a little bit aboriginal and, as of recently, a little bit ’80s new wave. Meet Wayne Lavallee, or as the singer/songwriter is known to many of his

fans and social media followers, the Rock ’n’ Roll Indian Cowboy. “That’s how I describe my sound,” explains the longtime North Vancouver resident, “and it works as a good marketing tool for myself as well.” On March 1, Lavallee is set to open for singer Crystal Shawanda at the York Theatre in East Vancouver. The performance is part of the 2014 Talking Stick Festival, which runs Feb. 18 to March 2. Presented by Full Circle First Nations Performance, this 13th annual celebration of aboriginal performing arts features 50 shows, including Full Circle’s own Margo Kane acting in the play For the Pleasure

For his set, Lavallee will be playing songs from his third and most recent album Trail of Tears (2010), which garnered a Juno Award nomination for Aboriginal Recording of the Year, as well as some new material from his upcoming album set for release this year. expect to hear some ’80s inﬂuence — think Steve Earle, Bruce Springsteen, Depeche Mode and Buffy Sainte-Marie. “I grew up with ’80s music, right, so I’m a big fan of it, but I never thought I’d try to explore that sound like 10 years ago, or even ﬁve years ago,” Lavallee says. Recently, though, he’s noticed the nostalgic sound of the analog synthesizer in contemporary music and is excited to experiment with synth in his own work. “It just seems like new wave is making a comeback.” Despite introducing some keyboard action, Lavallee says his new

music will still maintain its aboriginal flavour. “It’s always going to have an aboriginal vibe or sound, however one defines that,” he says. “It’s kind of what makes it unique in a way.” Born in Vancouver, Lavallee comes from a large Métis family based in Manitoba. When he was five years old, he received a guitar for Christmas and he’s been playing ever since. “I knew when I was really young I wanted to play music,” he says. For dance company founder Tina Finkelman Berkett, there is nothing more important than helping her dancers grow and develop artistically. To ensure that goal continues to be achieved, it’s imperative that they’re exposed to choreographers who have something creatively speciﬁc to offer

Oscar watch: Hopefuls keep eyes on the prize

Put on your best dress, get your ballots ready at home and prepare to stifle a yawn: there isn’t much suspense to be had from this year’s Academy Awards, airing March 2 and hosted by Ellen DeGeneres. What fun is an Oscar show if there’s no suspense, no heated arguments, no throwing popcorn at the TV? The only gasps this year were heard when Tom and Oprah’s names weren’t called on nomination day. Let’s hope Bradley Cooper shows up in full American Hustle perm to liven things up . . . . Here are your nominees, and who was passed over this year. ■ Best Picture Best Picture is often a foregone conclusion by this point, but this is the only category remotely up for grabs, between 12Years A Slave and American Hustle. 12Years should take it. Snubbed was Rush, the enjoyable Formula One flick from Ron Howard. And while critics loved the Coen Brothers’ Inside Llewyn Davis, Academy voters weren’t impressed.Who else is nominated: Dallas Buyers Club, Gravity, Captain Phillips, Philomena, Nebraska, Her,The Wolf OfWall Street. ■ Best Director People want to recognize director Alfonso Cuaron for his Gravity feat, but don’t love the film enough to give

I’d like to see Chiwetel Ejiofor win, if only because presenters have been practicing his name for weeks! Other nominees: Bruce Dern (Nebraska), Leonardo DiCaprio (The Wolf of Wall Street), Christian Bale (American Hustle). Inexplicably shut out was Robert Redford, for his riveting solo voyage in All Is Lost. Also absent: Michael B. Jordan (Fruitvale Station) and Tom Hanks, despite his best work in years (Captain Phillips). ■ Best Actress Sandra Bullock may have had a shot, had she not so recently won an Oscar for The Blind Side. Green Bride created for the entire group From page 14 that we were each separately on in terms of investing in a contemporary dance career that was fulfilling and that was challenging,” says Finkelman Berkett, who serves as the company’s coartistic director. “That kind of work was not happening in L.A. and so we started BodyTraffic in an effort to bring internationally renowned choreographers to L.A. to make work on a Los-Angeles-based group. We’re a repertory company, we’re commissioning works by choreographers with very distinctive voices.” BodyTraffic plans to showcase three of those distinctive voices this weekend as the company is slated to perform a world premiere by Hofesh Shechter, and two Canadian premieres by Barak Marshall and Richard Siegal. Finkelman Berkett is dancing in all three works. She and her company mates arrived in Vancouver last Saturday and have been spending long days working with Shechter to complete the choreography on his piece thanks to a Chutzpah! Festival residency. Finkelman Berkett is grateful to Mary-Louise Albert, artistic managing director of the Chutzpah! Festival, for the opportunity.

“The fact that she believes in our work and she believes that we should be given time in a theatre to finalize the piece and to work out the technical aspects, that’s a huge vote of confidence. We’re thrilled to have the opportunity to be here and to be working on what we love,” she says. The Israeli, Londonbased choreographer’s new work is described as taking a dark look at the powers that steer us in today’s society and was created for six dancers — three males and three females. It also features a soundtrack composed by Shechter. “The style and the movement vocabulary, really none of us have ever dabbled in, but we just dove in so wholeheartedly and we really have pushed ourselves to achieve what Hofesh wants.To hear Hofesh say that we are presenting his work in the way it was intended, means the world to us,” says Finkelman Berkett. “It’s been wildly fulfilling as a dancer to push yourself to feel like you’re exploring some new ability in your body.You’re finding further extremes that you didn’t think you could reach, both emotionally and physically,” she adds. BodyTraffic was featured at the Chutzpah! Festival two years ago, performing

a work by Barak Marshall, also Israeli, and based in L.A.The work, Monger, had been created for the Suzanne Dellal Centre in Tel Aviv, Israel and they were the American company chosen to mount it.This time around, Body Traffic commissioned a new work by Marshall and will open their Chutzpah! A sweater for every style Dear Mattie: How do I dress up my sweater? Looking for new ideas in Capilano

Dear Capilano: Sweaters are very trendy right now. It is the look of the sweater that is making the impact. That look comes from the overall ensemble. The sweater ensemble includes layering, bottoms and bling. At least two stylish pieces are needed to mix with the sweater and one piece of bling, which stands out. Although many ladies are wearing this look, depending on how you accessorize, it can be unique. The layered look has taken off this transition season. The pieces are all practical. The unique ensembles create a modern look. Pulling off this look of wearing many pieces together with your sweater has the feel of fashion luxury. I have broken down the styling of the layering ensembles because there are so many options to drift towards, I don’t want you to go overboard. There are two trends that are consistent with all the styling of the layered looks. Add pastels or a graphic print and you will have a starting point with each of these looks. The ﬁrst look is the vintage, preppy look that now has a contemporary feel. The look is collegiate. It is a young-at-heart and casual look. There is a striped shirt with a collar or a long sleeve T-shirt under a belted cardigan, chunky cable-knit sweater, or wool vest, which can be plain or have a Fair Isle pattern. I am also seeing new funky knit patterns. This sweater look is loose, but not oversized. It looks best with all styles of jeans

and even a skating skirt. Add a light-weight printed scarf with contrasting and complementary colours with hoop earrings and you have nailed this look. The next look that I really like is the glamorous look. Many ladies feel that the sweater is frumpy. It is not. It can be sophisticated. The knit is more luxurious as these sweaters are mohair, angora, cashmere and silk. This sweater is fitted. From an exaggerated argyle to pastel pink to animal print, this look is complemented with a leather skirt or pant. This look is a textured one. Gold bling with a feather or faux mink scarf will pull this ensemble together. There is another look out there that is casual and brings us back to the days of grunge. Start with a fitted graphic T-shirt and layer up with a loose-fitting denim or plaid shirt. Denim shirts have patterns and plaid shirts have many colours of checks. The layers in this look are contrasting colours. The sweater is an oversized cardigan or cable-knit used as an outerwear piece. Leggings, in a colour (not black), with or without a graphic print is how you finish this look. Don’t forget the 10 crafty bracelets and the bright beanie. It is very important to remember that old stretchedout pieces do not enhance this look. To create this modern look, everything must be crisp. When it ﬁrst showed its squinty schnozz, the Cherokee generated all kinds of hilarious jests, jeers, and japes. Having seen the thing in the ﬂesh, I actually kinda like it. I know, I know: maybe it’s me who needs the bifocals. Here’s the thing though: in the Trailhawk trim, with big burly boots and plenty of plastic cladding, the Cherokee looks like something that could have

rolled right off the set of the original Robocop. It’s futuristic and polarizing, and I’m sure you’ve already got an opinion on it. My Limited Trim tester came with 18-inch polished alloy wheels, and I will say that the more basic versions of the Cherokee can’t pull off the scowl quite as well as those with the beeﬁer

Environment On the inside, the Cherokee benefits from a great deal of parts sharing across the Chrysler lineup. While I’ve heard other colleagues complain about the odd bit of flimsiness in the plastics and stitching issues here and there, my particular tester didn’t seem to have too many foibles. As this is an all-new vehicle, I’d be inclined to watch carefully for any teething issues if you’re picking one out among several on the lot. However, Jeep delayed the launch of their new crossover significantly, focussing on tweaking things based on early reviewer feedback, and this mostly shines through in the Cherokee’s interior. It looks good, and the infotainment controls are among the best on the market. It’s worth noting, for instance, that both Maserati and Ferrari use similar versions of the Uconnect system, with its big, bright icons, and easyto-use interface. Compared to others in the class, this Jeep is not quite the utilitarian box the old Cherokee was. It’s fine for passenger space, especially as it’s equipped with a sliding rear seat, but the overall cargo room is smaller than either an Escape or a CR-V. As a Limited, this tester came fully equipped with leather and the highest grades of interior trim, and was actually a fairly snazzy ride. Both the volumeselling Japanese vehicles in this segment, the CR-V and RAV4, seem to have

a greater amount of hard plastics.The Cherokee does look like a little Grand Cherokee from behind the wheel. Performance It also drives like one, but not all the time. As mentioned, this crossover sits on a Fiat platform rather than the Grand Cherokee’s Mercedes-Benz underpinnings, and it feels it. Fiat only ofﬁcially sells one car in this country, the funky little 500, which is available in a number of trims, up to and including the hilarious turbocharged Abarth.The Cherokee is more like the base car, with somewhat numb steering, a ride tuned for comfort rather than speed, and an overall woolly and isolated drive. That’s ﬁne.We already have several crossovers that pretend convincingly to be sportscars, from the Mazda CX-5 to the Ford Escape. Comfort and smoothness are favoured in the Cherokee over corner carving, and thus it’ll probably appeal to a broader range of tastes. However, a little more feel could be wished for, and slightly better behaviour from the nine-speed automatic transmission.You read that right: nine speeds. Wasn’t eight supposed to be enough? Is this thing a crossover or a mountain bike? If ideally programmed, the Cherokee’s ZF ninespeed auto would be capable of holding the engine in an econ-friendly mode well past 120 kilometres per hour.
