Wrong-way crash injures tot Police suspect impaired driving in Thursday’s Highway 1 head-on

BRENT RICHTER brichter@nsnews.com

West Vancouver police are looking at several charges after a driver entered the wrong Highway 1 on-ramp, drove several kilometres in the oncoming lane and caused a head-on collision that sent several

people to hospital — all while impaired, police allege. Investigators say the driver of a white panel van collided with a minivan carrying a family of four, leading to a chain reaction crash of a third vehicle. One of the victims, a 2½- year-old girl, was taken to hospital with a

fractured shoulder, which has since been operated on. The girl’s seven-yearold sister and parents were unharmed in the crash. “The kids were properly restrained. It was just a really, really significant impact,” said Const. Jeff Palmer West Vancouver police spokesman. Though it is early in the investigation, police suspect the driver started going east in the westbound lane

somewhere west of Taylor Way, possibly 21st Street or 15th Street shortly after 7 p.m. on Thursday, according to Palmer. “We started getting a couple 9-1-1s about it and then as officers were doing an emergency response up to the highway, we get other calls that there’s been a collision,” Palmer said. “We’re more than content to believe there’s reasonable grounds to believe this was the result

of impaired driving and dangerous driving.” The suspect driver, a 47-year-old Nanaimo man, has been hospitalized with a broken leg and hip. “We’ve spoken to more than 30 witnesses. Still, if anybody saw anything, more information is going to be better,” he said Calls about drivers going in the wrong direction come in from time to time, Palmer said, but most often, the driver

realizes his or her mistake and turns around before it becomes a police incident. In 2005, North Vancouver resident David Firenze was killed in a head-on collision with a drunk driver going in the wrong direction on the Trans-Canada Highway. Anyone who witnessed Thursday’s crash or the panel van before it entered the highway is asked to contact West Vancouver police at 604-925-7300.

City of North Van to expand smoking ban BRENT RICHTER brichter@nsnews.com

The City of North Vancouver is moving to scale back where smoking will be allowed in city limits. Council passed a motion Monday night asking staff to rewrite the city’s smoking bylaw to prohibit smoking within 7.5 metres of doors, windows and air intakes, on restaurant patios, and in city parks and trail areas. The updated smoking bylaw exceeds the provincial ban on puffing on tobacco of only three metres from doors and air intakes. The bylaw, however, will exempt the existing patios that currently allow smokers to light up: Sailor Hagar’s, the Royal Canadian Legion Army Navy Air Force Veterans Unit 45, the Rusty See Pub page 3

West Van dismisses amalgamation

Combined services find little support at council Monday JEREMY SHEPHERD jshepherd@nsnews.com

While representatives of the City and District of North Vancouver have expressed some support for amalgamation, the issue was largely dead on arrival in West Vancouver Monday. Following a February vote by the District of North Vancouver to study the issue, Mayor Richard Walton invited neighbouring mayors to weigh in on the controversial topic. While he stopped short

of favouring combining governments, West Van Coun. Craig Cameron suggested that looking at combining services was a “no-lose proposition.” “This is something we need to be doing for our citizens and our taxpayers to ensure that we’re being efficient. We have a lot of politicians running a relatively small population on the North Shore,” he said. His view was virulently opposed by Coun. Bill Soprovich, who pounded the desk to emphasize his point.

“I suggest the mayor send the letter over and say, ‘Don’t bother us again with that nonsense and do your own housekeeping,’” he said. “I’m not closing my mind on anything in the future but I assure you, we stand up proud for West Vancouver. There’ll be no amalgamation as long as I’m on council.” Coun. Nora Gambioli took umbrage with Soprovich’s words. “I would remind Coun. Soprovich that he’s only one of seven people,” she said. Cameron stressed that West Vancouver should focus on combining services such as the North Shore Emergency Management Office, in which West Van

is a partner, and the North Vancouver Recreation Commission, in which West Vancouver does not play a role. “I don’t see how having more information and discussions is threatening, and I don’t know what Coun. Soprovich is railing against but it certainly isn’t something that’s being put forward at council,” he said. While Mayor Michael Smith granted the validity of Cameron’s points, he also agreed with Soprovich. “There’s lots of areas where we can save everybody on the North Shore money, but West Vancouver is a different community than North Van,” he said. “I don’t

think there’s any interest whatsoever . . . from our citizens to amalgamate with North Vancouver.” While Smith favoured integration of services, such as garbage pickup, he pointed to the time constraints faced by district staff. “We only have so much staff and they only have so much time,” he said. “If they’re going to spend a lot of time on a study that we conclude is going nowhere, then that’s a lot of time that (district staff is) not going to be spending on priorities that this council has set.” Smith said he would discuss the issue with Walton and City of North Vancouver Mayor Darrell Mussatto.

Pub patios are exempt from bylaw

From page 1

Gull, the Two Lions Pub and Jack Lonsdales, though that bar voluntarily banned butts. The decision came after requests from Vancouver Coastal Health and the Canadian Cancer Society for the city to join the District of North Vancouver and District of West Vancouver in creating a uniform North Shore smoking bylaw, which the other two governments passed and the city rejected in 2009. That bylaw prohibits smoking in entrance ways, patios, parks, playgrounds and municipally owned public gathering places. The goal is to open up those areas to people who would otherwise choose to avoid dangerous secondhand smoke. “There are Canadian studies that show exposure to second-hand smoke on patios can be as high as it previously was indoors. The idea that there’s enough ventilation on patios is simply not the case,” said Dr. Mark Lysyshyn, the North Shore’s medical health officer in his presentation to council. Mayor Darrell Mussatto suggested that Lysyshyn meet directly with the pub owners, rather than come to the city looking for an outright ban. And the mayor showed little interest in banning smoking at the legion. “Last time we had a legion delegation, they had someone who fought in the Second World War and he came in front of us and said

Amalgamation was also a tough sell at city council, with Mussatto citing the 70 kilometres of asbestos cement pipe the district is currently replacing at a cost of $3 million per year. “Until they’ve dealt with their liabilities like concrete asbestos pipes . . . I’m not interested in talking to them,” Mussatto said. District of North Vancouver Coun. Doug MacKay-Dunn, a longtime champion of amalgamation, said the only way to verify Mussatto’s comments is to look at both sets of books. “Like anything else, the proof is in the pudding, so let’s get a pudding committee together,” he said.

Coroner holds inquest into fatal logging truck accident BRENT RICHTER brichter@nsnews.com

I want to smoke on the patio.’ That’s pretty powerful when you get those people coming in front of us,” Mussatto said. But it wasn’t the individual smoker’s health Lysyshyn was lobbying for. “It’s powerful but that doesn’t give him permission to harm other people’s health,” he responded. For the pub’s owners, the issue was economic. Brian Riedlinger, co-owner of Sailor Hagar’s in Lower

Lonsdale, pleaded with council to spare pubs from the new bylaw to help them compete with restaurants, which, thanks to pending changes in B.C.’s liquor laws, will no longer have to sell food to patrons ordering alcohol. “As a struggling small business, we need to find ways to distinguish ourselves from them and we see this as one good way because the impact on a non-smoker is minimal and no one under 19 years of

age is permitted,” he said. Lysyshyn said studies have shown that tobacco bans on patios only have neutral or positive economic impacts over the long term. The motion to tighten up restrictions on smoking in public places but leaving pubs alone strikes a balance between the competing interests, Coun. Craig Keating argued. On the matter of smoking and going one step beyond banning butts on patios, First Street

resident Gary Charbonneau appeared as a delegation asking council to consider banning smoking in Lower Lonsdale, using First Street between Lonsdale and Chesterfield avenues as a pilot area. Charbonneau presenting council with a 700-name petition requesting the LoLo ban. For that, Mussatto said the city would have to get a legal opinion on whether or not it has the jurisdiction to enforce it, which staff would look into.

B.C.’s chief coroner will hold an inquest into the death of aWestVancouver motorcyclist killed in a logging truck accident last fall. On Oct. 18, Hugh Roberts, 65, was riding his motorcycle on Highway 99 near the intersection of Nordic Way in Whistler when an oncoming logging truck lost control on a bend in the road and overturned. The truck’s load spilled onto the roadway and struck Roberts. The coroner inquest’s jury will listen to testimony given under oath, similar to a trial, about the facts surrounding Roberts’ death and make recommendations aimed at preventing future deaths under similar circumstances. “I hope that through our loss and the resulting inquest, necessary safety improvements will be made in the trucking industry,” said Roberts’ widow Mary in an email to the North Shore News. Homeless count wraps up More seniors living on streets JANE SEYD jseyd@nsnews.com

Outreach workers and volunteers found two of the North Shore’s homeless — an elderly couple — sleeping in their car at a gas station. They looked for others camped out in the bush behind shopping malls, hanging out at the bottle depot — and even in hospital beds. The volunteers who fanned out across the North Shore Tuesday night and Wednesday this week were helping to conduct a homeless count done every three years in North Vancouver. The count is intended to give social service agencies some idea of how many people are homeless.

“It’s actually a very valuable tool,” said Lynne Henshaw, co-ordinator of the North Shore Homelessness Task Force. The count started on the evening of March 11 at the North Shore shelter run by the Lookout Society. Linda Fox, manager of the shelter, estimated about 60 people were tallied at the shelter that evening. “Our shelter is always full,” she said. Since the first homeless count was conducted 12 years ago, numbers of homeless recorded on the North Shore have risen from 44 in 2002 to 117 in the last count. But outreach workers guess the number of homeless is actually higher — between 200 and 300. A lot of homelessness is still hidden here, said Fox.

Who you know S

nuffling at the public trough apparently got so loud this week that even Premier Christy Clark found it impossible to ignore. We speak, of course, of the now-you-seeit-now-you-don’t patronage appointment of former Liberal MLA John Les, who distinguished himself as being one of the shortest-lived recipients of government largesse. Despite having no discernible credentials, Les was named as the province’s $140,000-per year expert in earthquake preparedness by Attorney General Suzanne Anton. But when the tremors in the Legislature grew too strong, Clark concluded the province could apparently get by without Les’ expertise on the subject and cut him loose. Les hardly finds himself on the street. He still gets a “transitional allowance” of $102,000, a $60,000 paycheque for his seat on the Farm Industry Review Board

and continues to hobnob with former colleagues as a registered lobbyist. He’s also in line for a government pension. Les was in good company with former MLA and current trade commissioner Ben Stewart, who received a golden handshake after giving up his seat for Clark. Former politician Gordon Wilson is paid $50,000 every three or four months for the vague task of singing the praises of LNG — a remarkable feat considering Wilson’s previous publicly expressed doubts on the topic.Wilson — a political opportunist of long standing — received his plum after endorsing Clark in the campaign. The public has every right to be affronted. Meanwhile, if B.C. really needs more high-paying public service jobs that don’t accomplish anything and don’t require any skills other than loyalty to the governing party, there’s always the option of creating a senate.

Awaiting the sacrament of confirmation The political take on the WestVancouver Police Department’s turmoil is that Mayor Michael Smith now has a strong grip on Nov. 15 — municipal election day. That’s a long time off in politics. Smith may not run anyway. But the recent WVPD theatrics — scandal, if you wish — have made it more, not less, likely that he’ll go for a second mayoral term. So he confirms. The WVPD affair — accusations of bullying, sexism and racism in the 102-year-old department — seems to have energized him. Once off the mark, too slowly some thought, he got in front of the story. Now Smith seems to have defanged any potential rivals who — since the mayor is automatically chair of the West Vancouver Police Board — might have made the scandal an election issue.

Trevor Lautens

This Just In

Delicately, of course. The West Vancouver way. Investigation of the claims didn’t move at the usual glacial speed. Nine days after Province reporter Sam Cooper broke the story, citing a 2013 report showing that station morale was very bad,WorkSafeBC dispatched two staffers who, within a week, announced that the WVPD’s harassment procedures and compliance

CONTACTUS

with B.C. anti-bullying legislation were OK. Days later, two executives under Chief Peter Lepine, Insp. Mike Rattray and Insp. Barry Nickerson, with 34 and 31 years’ experience respectively, resigned. Lepine, a 35year police veteran whose five-year contract expires Sept. 13, stated his plans for retirement had begun before Cooper’s scoop. Story over? I don’t think so.There’s more insinuation than information in this apparent denouement. The public understandably will have jumped to a “logical” conclusion. But there isn’t a jot or tittle of evidence out there about what role Rattray and Nickerson played in this miserable affair. If any. This is the distance between the sun and the next nearest star, and a

public hearing or trial, with sworn evidence and crossexamination.What the public knows about l’affaire WVPD at this point is just slightly more respectable than gossip over a pint in the pub. What we do know emanates from a fired police officer, a disgraced former WVPD chief with enough baggage of his own to bend a Tennessee mule’s back, and a stack of anonymous Internet comment and bitching quoted by reporter Cooper. (Who knows more than he’s written, if this resembles other sensitive media stories that have to be carefully lawyered, as we say, for libel.) In any turmoil like this one, in any organization’s hierarchy of status and responsibility, a midmanager can be the one who (1) did something wrong (sin of commission);

(2) coulda shoulda woulda done something right (sin of omission); (3) takes the fall for the boss, and/or the boss’s boss — or falls on his sword for the sake of the company, the government, the country, whatever.Yes, even friends. He or she could also be long-serving, muses about retirement, weighs the pension against present needs, and doesn’t need the hassle of more months or years of a poisonous workplace. So g’bye already. I stress that I’m not defending the two departing officers. I’m modestly defending the integrity of process. And not to doubt there isn’t some sullen, serious stuff that’s gone on within the WVPD. A couple of years ago a malcontent — obviously in, or with close ties to, the cop shop — repeatedly emailed me,

making accusations but declining to come forward for a meeting. Some people try to exploit the media for self-centred purposes — what a surprise, eh? Getting nowhere, he stopped. Just the sort who might turn to another journalist to undermine a chief he clearly hated. One claim he made was perhaps accurate:When the WVPD turned 100 in 2012, he wrote that Lepine couldn’t get enough cops to take part in an appropriate ceremony. True, it wasn’t held. For those annoyed by my weakness for grand quotations, some lodged immovably in my memory for 70 years, here’s another annoyance:Voltaire said that before accepting any news, “we should await the sacrament of confirmation.” What a stunning phrase See No page 10

VIEWPOINT

New Democrat and labour’s great divide An unusual gathering at Premier Christy Clark’s legislature office last week served as a reminder of some of the challenges facing the New Democratic Party as it continues to rebuild after last year’s devastating election defeat. A Who’s Who of B.C.’s organized labour movement met with Clark to see if there was any common ground on three issues: raising the minimum wage, reducing the reliance on foreign workers, and increasing the number of apprenticeships at work sites. Almost a dozen union leaders huddled with Clark in her office, which is about 100 metres from NDP leader Adrian Dix’s office. But when B.C. Federation of Labour president Jim Sinclair appeared at Clark’s side in a joint news conference afterwards, the distance seemed much greater. This was another example of the labour movement — traditionally a strong supporter of the NDP — making a bet that it was better to do business with

Keith Baldrey

View from the Ledge Clark and her government, rather than simply aligning itself with the Opposition New Democrats. The first such episode of this evolving relationship between labour and the B.C. Liberals came last fall, when Sinclair and building trades head Tom Sigurdson shared a public platform with Clark, to announce they had formed a joint committee to develop a skilled workforce that will be needed to develop the LNG industry. Framed against these developments is the ongoing internal debate within the NDP that goes to the heart of the party’s increasingly tense relationship with at

least parts of the labour movement. The NDP cannot decide where it stands on a critical issue: the creation of jobs in natural resource industries. And so it finds itself struggling to hold onto the support of those private sector union members whose livelihoods may depend on these jobs. This issue will likely dominate the party’s leadership race. The only declared candidate — MLA Mike Farnworth — has already been criticized by some of his caucus colleagues for daring to suggest the party take a neutral position on the proposed Kinder Morgan pipeline. Farnworth has also run afoul of the positions of two NDP-friendly mayors, as both Vancouver’s Gregor Robertson and Burnaby’s Derek Corrigan strongly oppose the Kinder Morgan project. Farnworth (and fellow MLA John Horgan, should he decide to run for leader) advocate policies that are more accepting of natural resource industries, but there

Heads: you get a worse recycling program. Tails: you get to pay more for it.

The BC Government is proposing to offload the province’s world-class recycling programs, run by local municipalities, to an association led by big multi-national corporations. The idea is that we’ll get a better, more efficient program that costs taxpayers less. Unfortunately, what we’ll really end up with is anyone’s guess. What’s going on here?

are many, many folks in their party that vehemently oppose such a shift. Take the issue of fracking, which is used to extract natural gas from deep in the ground. The party is committed to a review of the practice, but the outright banning of fracking is a favourite position of many environmental groups as well as NDP activists. Of course, if fracking was banned, the existing natural gas industry (which ironically grew significantly because of policies of the NDP government in the 1990s) would collapse, thus robbing the provincial treasury of hundreds of millions of dollars. There are other hotbutton issues that put some New Democrats in knots of course: mining, liquefied natural gas, port development, private power projects — the list is a long one. These industries not only create jobs, but wellpaying jobs — precisely the kind sought after by the labour movement. So when not one, not two, but almost a dozen

top labour leaders meet with the head of the B.C. Liberals to talk about jobs, that’s not a good thing if you’re a New Democrat struggling to maintain the party’s traditional identity as a workers’ party. Now, to be clear, the B.C. Federation of Labour

and its members are still supporters of the NDP and they’re not going to hold any fundraisers for Christy Clark anytime soon. But those NDP ties have become somewhat strained, as labour leaders realize their See Growing page 10

Laptops for Latin America Local non-profit collects computers for schools in rural Colombia

f you could use one word to describe Vitasave it would be happy. From the moment you walk through the doors at their headquarters, to the people you speak to on the phone and even as you browse their website, the company radiates happiness!

CHRISTINE LYON clyon@nsnews.com

NorthVancouver resident Ivan Correa has an idea that he hopes will result in a cleaner environment for Canada and a better education for children in developing countries. Correa is starting a project that involves donating used computers to rural schools, starting with those in his home country of Colombia. He says the initiative is a “win-win” situation that will help rid Canada of unnecessary e-waste and give children in poorer countries the technological skills needed to pursue higher education and secure future jobs. Correa, who works as an immigration consultant, has lived in Canada for eight years and resided on the North Shore for the last three. He owns a 10-acre teak tree plantation just outside the city of Medellín, Colombia, which he visits several times per year. The plantation employs about 40 people, many of whom have children attending the nearby school. On a trip this past January, Correa noticed

So he decided to donate his own laptop, planting the seed for his recently created not-for-profit corporation, the Don Ivan Foundation. “In Canada we change computers so often,” Correa says, explaining the technology we consider slow or outdated is perceived differently by the children he met in Colombia. “For them, it’s like brand new.” Established non-profit organizations, such as the World Computer Exchange, have been providing computers to youth in

developing countries for several years. But Correa says his initiative is unique because it focuses on schools in rural communities. “In the rural areas there are poor people, poor municipalities and they don’t have resources, money for things,” he says. Also, being from South America, he says he knows where the greatest need exists in the region. Currently, Correa is collecting portable computers in good working condition. Compared to desktop units, portable models are easier to transport and the recipient

schools can lock them up when they aren’t in use, to avoid robberies. Those wanting to donate a used computer should first wipe the hard drive. One of Correa’s colleagues in Colombia has volunteered to install Spanish software on the donated laptops. Correa his hoping to bring a few more computers to Colombia during his next trip, scheduled for May. “At least I want to bring four computers,” he says, adding hopefully, “If I collect 50, it would be great.” To donate, email correa. canada@gmail.com.

members’ interests come well ahead of those of the environmental movement. Some New Democrats who realize that turning their backs on the natural resource sector is a recipe for electoral disaster have spoken out. Former NDP premier Dan Miller and former senior NDP aide Bill Tieleman have both written

op-ed pieces or columns warning the party may be headed over a cliff. Don’t be surprised if we see more labour summits in the premier’s office. Clark’s political savvy tells her they not only make good sense from a public policy point of view, but they also serve to magnify the growing rift in the party that is her chief political opponent. NOTICE OF DISPOSITION

Sunset Marina Limited In accordance with section 26 of the Community Charter, the District of West Vancouver gives notice of its intention to sublease to Sunset Marina Limited for a period of 30 years, commencing July 2, 2014, certain filled land and parts of land covered by water, as shown outlined in bold on the plan below which forms part of this notice. In consideration of the sublease, the subtenant will pay to the District each year the aggregate of the following, plus GST: a) an amount equal to 4% of the subtenant’s potential gross income from moorage services provided on the premises; b) an amount equal to 4% of the sutbtenant’s gross income derived from parking and the storage of boats and trailers on the filled portion of the premises; and c) $2,300 per year (increasing each year by the percent change in the all-items consumer price index for Vancouver). Affordable housing lacking

From page 5

That can include people who are couch surfing without any permanent place to call home, half a dozen people who are all crashing in a oneroom apartment and others who simply pack up and disappear into the shadows during the day. A lot of times, “people tend to want to be off the radar” said Fox. “It’s just a survival technique for some.” Those who provide services to the homeless say the population on the North Shore is generally getting older. “We’ve had people in here who are upwards of 80 years old,” said Fox. There are also a growing number of families with children who are homeless. One of the challenges on the North Shore is lack of affordable housing. Most

people who are homeless here don’t want to leave the North Shore, added Fox, which makes finding an affordable place to live especially challenging. In 2012/2013, the shelter on West Second Street at Bewicke Avenue provided almost 16,000 “bed nights” to roughly 720 people. There were also almost 2,600 instances of people being turned away from the North Shore shelter, according the Lookout Society’s annual report — up 22 per cent from the previous year. This week, the social justice committee of the Capilano Students Union is also raising money to donate to the North ShoreYouth Safe House, an emergency shelter for youth. Preliminary numbers for the count are expected by the end of next month.

Inquest date not yet set From page 3 into whether or not there should be any criminal or Motor Vehicle Act charges is still ongoing, according to a Whistler RCMP spokesman. Whistler Mayor Nancy Wilhelm-Morden said she is “very pleased” to hear the coroner has called an inquest. “The concern that we had was someone lost their life by a logging truck losing its load in the middle of the municipality of Whistler, on a very busy Saturday afternoon.” Wilhelm-Morden said she

does not have any hopes for specific recommendations from the inquest, as long as they result in greater public safety. “I understand log hauling is done around the province in a very safe manner most of the time but the circumstances of this accident . . . were enough to cause us a great deal of concern,” she said. “We want some answers first of all into why the accident occurred and then we want some assuredness that it won’t happen again.” No date has been set for the inquest.

and screenwriter Chris Haddock when creating the story for Helen Lawrence, a new multi-media production presented by the Arts Club Theatre Company. “We sort of traced back those events to the time period they were occurring to discover that there was a great deal of police corruption and political influence intermingling,” says Haddock, a veteran screenwriter, director and producer whose TV credits include DaVinci’s Inquest, ●

DaVinci’s City Hall and Intelligence. “The city’s development was all mixed up with gambling and vice.” Helen Lawrence takes place in the petty crimeridden Vancouver of 1948. Story uses film noir approach From page 13 Hotel Vancouver, located where the TD Tower now stands. It was demolished in 1949 “for very dubious reasons,” Haddock adds. Featuring crooked cops, a revenge-seeking femme fatale and an unsolved murder, Douglas and Haddock’s story had all the ingredients for a classic film noir. “The idea of taking the film noir approach to it just evolved quite naturally out of our interest in seeing how films of that period were representing some of those same concerns and post-war anxiety,” Haddock says. “The blackand-white images appealed to us, the whole style was obviously intriguing, but it just served as almost a style metaphor for a lot of the things we were curious to investigate.” Helen Lawrence marks the theatrical debut for both Douglas and Haddock. But, as Haddock points out, the production really straddles the line between theatre and cinema. Audiences will be confronted with a bluescreen enclosed stage on which the play itself is performed. Filmed and live images of the actors are

projected into furnished virtual spaces, so the story unfolds simultaneously as a film and a play. If that sounds like sensory overload, Haddock offers his assurance that the production is careful to focus the viewer’s attention. “One minute it draws you to the artifice and the next it reveals the complete sort of naked nature of the stage presentation,” he explains. Douglas unearthed partial blueprints of the old Hotel Vancouver to aid in the creation of his computer-generated sets. Meanwhile, Haddock also immersed himself in the visual history of late’40s Vancouver. Formal research, combined with popular lore and his own memories of growing up in Vancouver allowed Haddock to better grasp the atmosphere of the time. After its world premiere in Vancouver, Helen Lawrence is set to embark on an international tour. Non-Vancouver audiences may not be familiar with the referenced history or landmarks, but Haddock is certain the production will have wide appeal See Project page 20

Watermain Business LicenceFlushing Renewals The watermain maintenance process may cause cloudiness, simply run the tap until the water is clear. From March through May, the Utilities Department will be flushing sediment from the District’s watermains to maintain good water quality and system performance. Temporary discoloration and cloudiness in tap water may result, due to particles being stirred up by the flushing process. Although the sediments are not harmful, the District will increase chlorination as necessary to ensure safe drinking water. Users may wish to run the tap until water is clear. During the flushing process, all water coming out of the mains is dechlorinated before being discharged into the drainage system.

Band delve deep into the Persian past

The Montreal-based Constantinople return to the North Shore this weekend, bringing with them a wealth of musical skills that combine traditional Persian culture with modern sensibilities. The ensemble, composed of brothers Kiya and Ziya Tabassian, Didem Basar, Kyriakos Kalaitzidis and

the show should appeal to a wide audience. “For sure the Persian community will be interested, but it’s not just a concert for Iranians, because it’s just beautiful music,” says Tabassian. “You don’t need to be familiar with Persian music to enjoy the show.” The band formed in 1998 in Montreal, with the goal to create music that embraced multiple cultures, connecting East and West through music, according to Tabassian. “The aim of Constantinople has always been to create a new music based on different cultures and the exchange between cultures.” The ensemble produces many projects, and the latest to emerge is Paths to the Summit, a program that draws from the 16th and 17th century. “We’re recreating music from our culture from 400 and 500 years ago, and nobody has played it before because (the manuscripts) were previously lost. These are masterpieces from a Golden Age, such

beautiful music.” Guest Sepideh Raissadat brings her own unique history as the first female vocalist to have a solo public performance in Iran following the 1979 Islamic revolution, where female singers were banned from performing in public. Raissadat has had considerable success internationally, having performed for both UNESCO and the Vatican. Kiya and Sepideh met a few years ago in Toronto, and began to collaborate due to their mutual love for Persian music. When Kiya started creating the Paths to the Summit, Sepideh was all in. “We work very well together. She has a beautiful singing voice, and was very receptive to the ideas of the show. When I was explaining to her about the program she was very interested and wanted to know more.” On the subject of what inspired him to delve into the past,Tabassian says his fascination with the lives of many of the past musicians mirrored his own experiences as an immigrant.

“What was interesting to me was that these composers were immigrants. They moved from Persia to other countries, and passed the rest of their life in Istanbul, Greece, and they adapted to these new societies. This was an inspiration to me personally, because that’s kind of my history too. I moved from Iran to Canada, living in Montreal and doing well here, and it’s very touching for me that even 400 years ago there were musicians who left Persia and were recognized and appreciated in other places,” says Tabassian. “It’s inspiring to me.” Tabassian is hopeful the audience will respond well to Paths to the Summit. “We are presenting the beauty and the details of the past to the audience who I think need to hear those beautiful details.” The band will be stopping off in L’Assomption, Quebec in late April before heading across the Atlantic to play in France in mid-June.

UBC Symphony taps into Romantic muse Tchaikovsky, Mozart and Strauss set for Centennial show ■ The UBC Symphony Orchestra:The Great Romantics, Centennial Theatre, Saturday, March 15, 8 p.m. JEREMY SHEPHERD jshepherd@nsnews.com

Mozart looks different from 40,000 feet. When circling something as complex as the famed composer’s Linz symphony, conductor and pilot Jonathan Girard prefers to begin with an aerial view. Girard is set to wield the baton for the UBC Symphony Orchestra this Saturday, as they play Strauss,Tchaikovsky, and Mozart’s Symphony No. 36, also known as Linz. Mozart tossed off the

score in just four days — his genius obliviously humiliating Salieri in the process. At first glance, the sheet music is as precise and as incomprehensible as a map of the cosmos. But from that 40,000foot perspective, Girard’s work begins. The details are not important at this stage. Girard is looking for the form of the piece, and for patterns within that form. Where does the introduction end? Does the exposition have a siciliano quality? What tempo would best suit the recapitulation? “Then, what I do, is I literally sing through the piece,” he says. As he sings the oboes and

bassoons, the violins, viola, trumpets and timpani, the distance between conductor and composer starts to shrink. “I start to form real opinions on what I think Mozart’s ideas are,” Girard explains. Like poetry without punctuation, Mozart’s music is generally sparse on notations, leaving the pacing, pauses, crescendos and diminuendos in the hands of his interpreters. For the violinists and cellists, the way they hold the bow can be the difference between a period and an exclamation point. An up-bow technique will result in a crescendo as the pressure point approaches the string, Girard explains. Like an attorney building a case, Girard develops See Girard page 39

Remedy equal parts drama and plasma Sara Canning no stranger to blood and guts entertainment ■ Remedy starring Sara Canning, Dillon Casey, Enrico Colantoni, Sarah Allen and Genelle Williams, Global TV, Mondays at 9 p.m. JULIE CRAWFORD Contributing writer

The new medical drama Remedy is like the Downton Abbey of hospital shows, a look at the upstairs-downstairs parallel worlds of a busy metro hospital, all anchored by a strong family narrative. I love Downton Abbey!” says Sara Canning, who plays Dr. Melissa Conner in the edgy new drama. (Plus, she gets to wear medical scrubs rather than a corset.) Melissa is one of several Conners in

residence at Bethune Hospital, including dad, Dr. Allen Conner (Enrico Colantoni) the hospital’s chief of staff. Her sister Sandy (Sarah Allen) is a busy ICU nurse; brother Griffin (Dillon Casey), after a self-inflicted exile, joins the staff as an orderly so the family can keep an eye on him. It’s a world where your spot in the hospital hierarchy is evident by the colour of your scrubs. The first look viewers get of Bethune is via the “downstairs,” home to laundry, food services etc, and where Chief Conner quickly gets lost. “It’s definitely one of the most unique things about the show, that look at both the white coats upstairs and the people keeping things running

below,” says Canning. “There’s lots of interaction between the two, both are necessary for a hospital to function.” What sets the show apart, the actor says, is the family-dynasty element. Each day brings drama and plasma in equal measure. Gelling as a family was easy for the cast. “It felt very natural from the getgo,” says Canning. “Rico is the perfect dad figure, we adore him. We have this light-hearted relationship but we want to make him proud . . . . it’s a lot of fun.” But the sibling rivalry was something new: “I have zero siblings, so this has been a cool, kind of foreign thing, the sense of competition.” Her character Melissa is a standard type-A overachiever. “I’m kind of tough on myself See Canning page 19

sometimes, but I’m looser than she is, I’m a goof,” she says. “I’m excited to go on her crazy little journey.” Film sets are chaotic enough without having to manufacture the bedlam of a busy emergency room, and choreography can be tricky. “A lot of those scenes ended up becoming a choreographed dance,” Canning agrees, pointing to the rapid-fire dialogue and the small amount of ground available for the actors to cover. “At the end of those scenes, everyone lets out a whoop!” she says. “It’s like a six-person marathon.” Canning is no stranger to blood and guts, having played series regular Jenna Sommers on TheVampire Diaries. But “I was kind of afraid of hospitals,” she admits. The actors attended “medical boot camp” for a few days and Canning interviewed several surgeons before

she started work on the show. The TV surgeries are slowly becoming second nature: “It’s weird, sticking my hand in a stomach. The effects guys are amazing: I have to remind myself that it’s OK.” Does she sometimes think she could hold her own in a real operating room? “I trick myself into thinking that sometimes I could say ‘I got this one’!” she laughs. Producers screened the show for employees at a Toronto hospital the week before Remedy aired. “I was kind of nervous, it was daunting.” But Canning reports that there was some gasping and laughter — in the right places — and feedback from viewers has been nothing but positive. There were no doctors in the Canning family; no actors either. Canning was born in Newfoundland and started doing theatre when she was 12. “I was a really shy kid, I don’t know what

made me audition,” she says. But “it was amazing: it gave me permission to be bolder, louder, braver than I was.” She attended the University of Alberta before landing in the Lower Mainland and attending Vancouver Film School. Roles in Smallville, Supernatural and Primeval: NewWorld followed, among others, including an award-winning turn in the feature Black Field. In addition to Remedy, Canning has a starring role in the upcoming indie feature I Put A Hit On You and plays the young wife of famed stop-motion photography pioneer Eadweard Muybridge in a fall-release project. In real life Muybridge shot and killed his wife Flora’s lover. For now Canning is more than happy to play yet another character with blood on her hands. Remedy airs on Global at 9 p.m. Mondays.

hy is heart attack the number one killer in this country? Ninety-nine percent of doctors say it’s due to atherosclerosis (hardening of arteries) and that cholesterol lowering drugs are the primary way to treat it. But I suggest cardiologists have closed minds and are ignoring facts that could save thousands of North Americans from coronary attack.

Vitamin C is required to manufacture healthy colcol lagen, the glue that holds coronary cells together, just like mortar is needed for bricks. Lysine, like steel rods in cement, makes collagen stronger. Pauling claimed it takes a mere 10 milligrams to prevent scurvy, but several thousand to prevent heart attack. Williams Stehbens, Professor of Anatomy at Wellington University in New Zealand, proved Pauling was right. Stebhens’ research showed that coronary arteries closest to the heart are under the greatest pressure. This causes collagen to fracture resulting in the formation of a blood clot and death.

Vitamin C and Lysine Powder Help Prevent Heart Attacks

Dr. Linus Pauling, two-time Noble Prize winner, was ignored for reporting that large amounts of vitamin C and lysine are needed to prevent coronary attacks. Twenty-five years ago Pauling reported that animals make vitamin C and humans do not. That’s why sailors died of scurvy during long sea voyages, but the ship’s cat survived.

Dr. Sydney Bush, an English researcher, has now proved that vitamin C can reverse atherosclerosis. Bush took retinal photographs, then started his patients on high doses of vitamin C and lysine. One year later additional pictures showed atherosclerosis had regressed in retinal arteries. So what has happened to these monumental findings? Bush has been ridiculed by cardiologists. One has to ask whether cardiologists, by ignoring his results, are condemning thousands of people to an early coronary heart attack. Sixteen years ago following my own coronary attack, cardiologists claimed it was sheer madness for me to refuse choles-

terol-lowering drugs. Instead, I decided to take high doses of vitamin C plus lysine with breakfast and the evening meal, for several reasons. I knew that Dr. Graveline, a physician and NASA astronaut, had twice developed transient global amnesia from taking Lipitor. I was also aware that patients have died from CLDs. Others have developed kidney, liver and muscle complications. I also believed the research of Pauling and Stehbens irrefutable. Now, the work of Dr. Bush has convinced me my decision was prudent. But to take large doses of vitamin C and lysine requires swallowing many pills daily. It’s swallo a tall order for those who dislike swallowing one pill. So for sevswa eral years I’ve been trying to find a company that would manufacture a combination of vitamin C and lysine powder. Now Medi-C Plus™ is available at health food stores. The dosage for the Medi-C Plus combination is one flat scoop with breakfast and the evening meal. Those at greater risk should take one flat scoop three times a day. If high doses cause diarrhea, the dose should be decreased. This column does not recommend that those taking CLDs should stop them. This is a decision that can only be made by patients and doctors. Most of today’s, cardiologists are impervious to persuasion. They continue to believe that cholesterol-lowering drugs are the be-all-and-end-all to prevent heart attack. They’ve been brain-washed by millions of dollars worth of promotion by pharmaceutical companies. It reminds me of the saying that cautions “It’s not what you don’t know what gets you into trouble, it’s the things you know for sure that ain’t so!” It’s time for cardiologists to have an open mind and stop ignoring this research. As for me – I bet my life on it!

Actor Krystin Pellerin can’t say enough good things about Floyd Collins, a play she’s starring in at Vancouver’s York Theatre. “Myself as an audience member, this is the kind of theatre that I want to be seeing. (When) I’m in the audience watching it, I’m overcome with emotion and just completely enthralled by the story,” she says. “The performances are so wonderful, the characters are so alive and it just transports you.The music

is unlike anything you’ve ever heard before. I just feel like it opens your mind and your heart in a way that I’ve never come across in a piece of theatre before . . . . It’s really beautiful and definitely worth seeing. If you can come, I just think you’d leave feeling lifted up.” The bluegrass-infused musical is set in 1925 Kentucky and, according to promotional material, turns a theatrical eye to “the true story of an American cave explorer and entrepreneur who, in his search for the ultimate tourist attraction, found himself trapped 100 feet below the earth.” Floyd Collins is a copresentation between The Cultch, Patrick Street Productions and Talk is Free Theatre. Soggy conditions didn’t dampen the enthusiasm of more than 60 racers as they navigated a slalom course and then enjoyed apres-ski refreshments and prize draws along with a silent auction in Mt. Seymour’s Rock Chute Lounge. Proceeds from the event, modelled on a charity golf format, will support the foundation’s efforts to raise awareness, funds and support research related to prostate cancer.

YOUR NORTH SHORE GUIDE to FASHION & STYLE

World travel inspires jewelry Gypsalove line celebrates the nomadic lifestyle

CHRISTINE LYON clyon@nsnews.com

Alyx Kottmeier grew up on the North Shore but these days she doesn’t stay in one place long. Kottmeier travels from country to country, funding her adventures by teaching yoga and selling handmade jewelry. Her Gypsalove collection of accessories was born from a desire to backpack in style. The pieces feature crystals and stones gathered from the far reaches of the globe. In addition to selling her own designs, Kottmeier also buys and sells jewelry made by artisans she has met along the way. The North Shore News recently reached her on the west coast of India for a Q-and-A.

Follow us on Twitter @NSNLook

Editor’s note: interview has been condensed for brevity. What are you doing in India? I’m making all my dreams come true. For the last two years I’ve owned the HippTrip Yoga Studio at the Simrose Hotel in Goa where you practise while hearing the ocean and, if you’re lucky, you may see a dolphin while in a downward-facing dog. In September this year we’re moving the studio to Cambodia. Describe your Gypsalove jewelry line? Gypsalove is me. It’s my thoughts, my creations and

Sit and Sleep Center

really it’s a lifestyle. It’s a jewelry line that shouts out “I am a gypsy and am a confident goddess.” Not all the pieces are from me. Some are tribal necklaces from Tibet. Gypsalove is Bohemian yet fashionable. You can wear Gypsalove with jeans or a fancy dress. But most of all Gypsalove is whimsical. How and when did you start Gypsalove? It just started two years ago. I love jewelry and I wanted to have a fair trade brand that shows the world what it’s like to be in my world. In the past two years I’ve been in Nepal, India, Thailand, Bali, Cambodia, Mexico, Guatemala, Italy, Denmark, Turkey and the U.K. I wanted people to see this globe through my jewelry. All my sweat, heart and soul have gone into each piece. They are my footprints I leave on this earth. What inspires your designs? The world inspires me, the people I meet, the laughter, the sounds, my yoga, how I feel, what I see, being in the present moment. This collection is the East meets the West because that’s exactly what I am. I try not to look at magazines or watch TV because Gypsalove comes from a different place. I want the inspiration to come from actual things I See Pieces page 27

and stones. Plus they are found all over the world. I work mostly in silver and copper metals. Where do you source your materials? I source from around the globe. Anywhere I travel, I collect. For instance, I got all my turquoise from the border

of Nepal and Tibet. I climbed over 5,000 meters to get it. All our crystal comes from the Mount Everest area. This year, the stones come from Guatemala, Mexico, Nepal, Tibet and India.

month in preparation for this week’s opening. “We’re in a really good place and the whole process has been such a special one in terms of the piece itself. We all feel very lucky to be working on Floyd Collins,” she says. Cast and crew were pleased with an opportunity to spend a few days working with Floyd Collins’ creator, Adam Guettel, a composer and lyricist based in New York City. “To get the opportunity to work with the composer on his own work and to get his insight firsthand is like a once in a lifetime opportunity,” says Pellerin. Pellerin plays Floyd’s sister Nellie, who, when the story starts, is just returning from a mental institution. “(She) and Floyd have a

She lives on a different plane and she has a sixth sense unlike anybody else and is really connected to Floyd on a spiritual level too, I think. I love playing her and there’s a lot of freedom playing somebody like that who lives in that other kind of reality.” Pellerin found it easy to connect with onstage brother, Daren A. pleasure to work with. . . . He just gives you so much when you’re working with him, it’s really great. I love playing brother and sister — Floyd and Nellie — with him. It’s just really, really fun. It’s really playful.” Pellerin is grateful that, despite her busy shooting schedule, she’s able to continue to find time for theatre projects. “Theatre is where my heart is and I find it so energizing and so inspiring and it keeps me in such good shape. I just feel very challenged by it and it’s very demanding. But at the same

time I get to play in another way and I get to play a whole slew of characters that are completely different from who I am, so that’s what I love about it. It’s a joy to do it and I have a need to do it so I feel really lucky to be able to fill the off-season that way,” she says. Pellerin has just finished the fifth season of Republic of Doyle and is anxiously awaiting word on a sixth. When asked what it’s like to be part of such a successful show (it’s been picked up in more than 100 countries), she says, “It’s a total dream.” “I always say this, but it’s better than what I could wish for. I get to be at home

and working. And Allan (Hawco, who plays lead Jake Doyle), has written this dream part that I get to play and it’s such a great part to be playing. I love working with everybody. It’s a wonderful cast and crew and so talented,” she adds. When asked whether she can offer any insight related to what’s next for her character, Sgt. Leslie Bennett, whose story arc has been rather dramatic as of late, Pellerin laughs. “I’m really excited to see what’s going to happen because I have no idea what’s going to happen to her. I’m kind of in the same boat as the audience.”

Well, lookie here.

While you’re not looking, this is what’s happening to BC’s world renowned recycling program.

One minute you have a perfectly good Blue Box recycling program. The next, something new and rather questionable is being put in its place. And they thought they’d get away with it right under your nose, without telling you or asking your opinion. That’s definitely not democracy in action. The BC Government, elected by us to represent our best interests, has decided to offload the costs of recycling to big multi-national corporations. To implement this new plan, they’ve set up an association that doesn’t really seem to hold the environment, local jobs, or the municipalities that run the Blue Box program, close to its heart. Perhaps that’s why some of our local elected officials are using the word “scam” to describe how the new program is being set up. It’s also perhaps why several of BC’s municipalities refuse to jump on board. That’s gotta tell you something. Now it’s your turn to let Premier Christy Clark know what you think. Contact her today to say that dismantling an already-working recycling program to replace it with something that few people think will be as good, is a bad idea.

Email Christy Clark at premier@gov.bc.ca or call 250-387-1715. For more info, visit RethinkItBC.ca. #RethinkItBC.

an increasingly definitive opinion of Mozart’s intentions through his studies. “Composers write in a language that continues to develop,” he says. “The more I know about Mozart’s output, not just the Linz symphony, but Requiem, his string quartets, piano concertis, all the other symphonies, it basically forms your opinion as a musician and you start to understand his language.” But after forming that opinion, he says the key is not to cling to it. “As a conductor, you’re not just inflicting what you think is correct . . . . you have to be listening and absorbing what other people are offering, because often people can have a better idea than you do,” he says. “There’s this symbiotic relationship between you and the orchestra where sometimes you’ve giving and they’re taking and then they’re giving and you’re taking.” By the time the show rolls around, the close-up

perspective is gone, Girard says. “By the time we get to the performance, we’re back out at the 40,000 foot level with: ‘How do we sell this piece to the people that are sitting in the chairs and make them feel the emotion in the music. Because someone in the audience doesn’t care if it’s played up bow or downbow,” he says. “But they want to know: ‘What was Mozart really saying?” ••• Born in Somerset, Massachusetts, Girard began playing the piano at age four. “My grandfather was a pianist and he used to put me on his lap and away I went,” he recalls. His grandfather was a jazz player, tickling ivories in big bands across Massachusetts and Rhode Island. He passed his perfect pitch and musical memory to his grandson. “I think people have different gifts and this is mine,” Girard says. After learning the piano, he was drawn to the viola and even played saxophone in a meringue band, but Girard always had his eye on the man with his back to the

audience. “In fifth grade I was asking teachers about conducting,” he says. “They let me conduct, even when I was in middle school.” Inspired by Leonard Bernstein’s appearances on PBS, Girard came to understand the conductor as a music-maker without an instrument. His background as a performer was crucial in creating empathy for what musicians go through, Girard says. The orchestra consists of UBC doctoral and masters students, many of whom will have an impressive résumé once the concert series concludes. The concert includes Don Juan, Strauss’s tone poem for the doomed ladies man. “Strauss is trying to tell the story of this guy, who has some interesting episodes to say the least,” Girard says. The music begins with an expression of Don Juan’s virility. “There’s no weakness shown in the very beginning of that piece, and it’s

representational of just his pure charisma and force. It’s actually one of the craziest, one of the most memorable openings of any orchestral piece that there is, and one of the hardest ones, too,” he says. Musicians auditioning for professional orchestras will be asked to play some of the extreme registers and lightning fast notes in auditions, Girard says. As a teacher, part of his job is to prepare the next generation of musicians. ••• Poring over sheet music in a North Vancouver café, Girard recalls flying a singleengine Cessna. Before he could take it out on his own, he had to simulate an emergency landing. “We were almost at the tops of the corn,” he says. Like most everything for Girard, the experience relates to music. “It’s actually a lot like conducting an orchestra. When a plane is flying well it doesn’t take much to manoeuvre it and it’s the same thing with an orchestra,” he says.

The GMC brand differentiates itself from Chevrolet by offering a slightly more premium product. As a result, the Sierra buyer is someone looking for a few more upscale features and higher level of styling than the average Silverado customer. The 2014 Sierra 1500 is all new. GMC claims that it

Sierra doesn’t look much different from the previous generation model, but actually, there are countless changes. The biggest changes come in the form of standard features that are part of the Sierra lineup but not part of the Silverado models. On the base 1500, those include projector beam headlights, the unique three-bar style grille, exclusive wheels, and the wheel arch body mouldings. The result is a look that feels more like a Cadillac than a Chevrolet. To further that feeling, customers can opt for the Denali edition. This

up or down. Once inside the bed, the four standard upper tie downs can be placed in nine different locations. Off-road enthusiasts may notice the lower chin spoiler added to the front to improve aero efficiency. GM engineers made this piece easily removable so the truck can have better ground clearance. The Sierra’s all-new cabin is the highlight of the package. Useful technology, premium materials and attention to detail define the interior. Soft-touch materials and

available aluminium trim make it as comfortable as it is practical. Performance Like its mechanical twin, the Sierra features GM’s new EcoTec3 family of engines. These consist of one V-6 and two V-8’s designed to increase power, torque and fuel efficiency. All three share fuel saving technologies which include direct injection, continuously variable valve timing, and active fuel management which seamlessly deactivates cylinders during light-load driving. The 4.3-litre V-6 pumps

out 285 horsepower and 305 foot-pounds of torque, which is the most torque of any standard V-6 in the segment. Step up to the 5.3-litre V-8 and you’ll get 355 h.p. and 383 footpounds of torque. In 2WD trim, this engine boasts an impressive highway fuel consumption rating of 8.7 litres/100 km, which is the best of any V-8 pickup. Sitting at the top of the range is a 6.2-litre V-8. It produces 420 h.p. and 450 foot-pounds of torque — the most horsepower and torque of any light truck on the market. See Truck page 50

All engines are matched to a six-speed electronically controlled automatic with two overdrive gears and a Tow/Haul mode, Cruise Grade Braking and Powertrain Grade Braking. For towing, GM offers three rear-axle ratio choices. For the weekend warrior, the 3.08 ratio will maximize your fuel efficiency and provide decent torque for pulling lighter loads. Customers planning on hauling heavier trailers will want to bump up to

the 3.28 or 3.43 rear ends to increase their towing capability. The driving dynamics are flat-footed and solid. In emergency situations, there is not a lot of body roll as it remains quite flat and resettles itself quickly. The Sierra inspires confidence in every road condition — something that you don’t expect in a full-size truck. Mind you, the Sierra cannot obviously compete with the nimbler and smaller mid-size trucks or the modern SUVs when See Smartly page 52

The available IntelliLink infotainment system is easier to use than Ford’s system too, with reasonably intuitive feel even for a first time user. It uses a HD, fully customizable, eight-inch touchscreen that’s responsive with no confusing menus. The upright dash provides great visibility and accessibility. The large knobs have a rubber coating allowing them to be gripped easily, even with gloves on. Special mention must be given to the trailer brake and AWD controls. Most trucks have these located low and/or in awkward places, but in the Sierra they are high on the left side of the dash. This means they are only a few inches from your hand, making them convenient, especially if you need to reach them in a hurry to pull a trailer back in line. Storage is plentiful. With an additional glove box and a centre compartment designed to hold most laptops, there’s no shortage of secure places to hide you valuables. You also won’t be left wanting more connectivity options. The Sierra is available with up to five USB ports, four 12-volt outlets, a 110-volt outlet, and an SD card slot. Do you need more? Hopefully not.

Features The Sierra 1500 has a starting price of $26,905. Standard equipment includes electronic stability control, traction control, Trailer Sway Control, Hill Start Assist, and a locking tailgate. Additional features, available as options or on higher trims, include a lane departure warning system, forward collision warning, park assist, Safety Alert Seat, heated front seats, heated power adjustable/folding mirrors, rearview camera, keyless entry, remote start, OnStar, satellite radio, Bluetooth,

and a Snow Plow Prep Package. Fuel efficiency numbers (litres/100 kilometres) for a Sierra 1500 Regular Cab 2WD V-6 are 11.9 city, 8.4 highway, for 10.4 combined.

Thumbs up The Sierra’s newly refined cabin is the best truck interior on the market. The improved engines are also appreciated. Polished look inside and out. Thumbs down While the cabin is comfortable and practical, it would be nice if it received a few unique details to make the Sierra’s interior feel a bit more special than a Silverado’s. It’s a full size truck still, so it can be awkward to move around in town and to park in busy places. The bottom line The Sierra’s refinement makes driving this truck surprisingly pleasurable. Competitors Ford F-150 It’s impossible to discount the F-150. Especially since it has been Canada’s best selling line of trucks for 48 years. It has accomplished this feat with a wide and varied lineup including a multitude of trim levels. With a starting price of $17,999, the F-150 is also the most affordable on the market. And the standards have been raised with Ford’s announcement of the brand new model with extensive aluminum body components. Ram 1500 The Ram offers all the requisite configurations of body styles and drive train options, but it’s the engine choices that are the highlight of this truck. The new diesel V-6 offers excellent fuel economy yet See Competitors page 53

a respectable amount of torque. The Ram’s $19,995 starting price also keeps it very competitive. Toyota Tundra In a market dominated by GM, Ram, and Ford, Toyota has a massive uphill battle just to be noticed. The Tundra has Toyota’s reputation for quality behind it but offers little else that the others don’t. Its $26,750 starting price also means it’s really not cheaper than the competitors. editor@automotivepress.com

holding it there. What’s more, if you are going to miss the light, the prototype A6’s start-stop system is keyed into the change from green to red. Thus, your car stops on the red, shuts down, and then fires up just before the light changes to green, and off you go. Start-stop systems are getting better all the time, but this new tech might mark huge new fuel and time savings for the modern car. While everyone argues about the potential legislative issues with an entirely self-driving car, the march to make the automobile much easier to drive continues. Jaguar XK slinks into the past There are three questions that immediately arise when piloting one of the supercharged versions of Jag’s stately XK grand touring coupe. Number 1: Are we sure this is legal? Number 2: Really? Number 3: Wouldn’t you rather have that new F-Type instead? As it turns out, most people would. The gorgeous F-Type is doing gangbusters in sales figures, particularly for a small roadster, and now with an even better-looking coupe on the way it is the sleek new banner-carrier for Jaguar. As you can get it with the same incredible supercharged V-8 as the XK-R, why go for the big cat?

Space, for one thing. The F-Type is a tight fit, and the XK is much better as a grand tourer. The bigger car’s rear seats are mostly useless, but the trunk is very large, the cabin space is considerably better, and the ride and handling are both tuned for the sweeping highway rather than the twisting back road. Even so, Jaguar is phasing out their XK after the 2015 model year run. Efforts are focused on a new smaller sports sedan to take on the likes of the BMW 3-Series, and the upcoming inevitable crossover. It may be some time before the XK returns in new duds. Pity.

Online petition to bring Civic Type-R to North America hits V-TEC Rhubarb rhubarb rhubarb — the masses are angry, and their mumbles are growing in volume. Recently shown off at this year’s Geneva Motor Show, the new Civic Type-R looks great, and we want one. In an effort to bend Honda and government importation laws to their will, Honda enthusiasts have set up an online petition that’s just crested 9,000 signatures. Will that do any good? Well, probably not. As great as it is to see enthusiasm for the return of a small, hot hatchback from Honda, the business See Jeep page 55

Jeep reboots Renegade as tiny trail hopper

From page 54

case for actually bringing it over and trying to sell it is pretty weak. The car shares little with the Civic we can all buy here, and will likely carry a pricetag not far off that of a Subaru STI or Mitsubishi EVO — both pricey halo cars. Nine thousand signatures is all well and good, but if fewer than a hundred cars sell, that’s not going to cut the mustard. Honda rarely brings any of its Type-R hardcore stuff to this side of the pond, having only released the Integra Type-R briefly. And that was a decade and a half ago. Better to hope that some of the lessons learned in crafting this 280 horsepower turbo trackterror can be translated into something in the Acura range. While the upcoming NSX looks great, a hot Acura in the sub-supercar bracket would be great to see again. Jeep dusts off Renegade nameplate, plots Wagoneer With the introduction of the teensy Renegade at the Geneva Motor Show, Jeep seems to have again found its compass. And by that I mean, they’re finally turfing the Compass. The new car is super-cute, and is essentially a Fiat Panda 4x4 underneath, with a happy little 1.4-litre turbo, available manual transmission, and clever

Jeep surefootedness. There’ll likely be a trailrated version too. Anyone out there with a beat-up Geo Tracker take notice:

your next backwoods fishing rig just arrived. Along with this neat little box on wheels, Jeep is also reportedly

planning a return for the stately Wagoneer. Sadly, we probably won’t see the wood-panelling making a comeback, but
