The loss of racquetball courts in the future William Grifﬁn recreation centre could be devastating to a core

of dedicated North Shore athletes. Ruben Ugarte and his fellow racquetballers are longtime players at the Delbrook centre, but with that facility combining with the proposed

William Grifﬁn centre, the options to play their favourite sport are quickly vanishing. Back in 2012, the design plans for William Grifﬁn included two squash courts and two courts that could be converted to play various racquet sports, including racquetball. However, Ugarte and a

few other players received a letter in January from the North Vancouver Recreation Commission, stating that the onceplanned convertible racquetball courts would be completely eliminated and replaced with squash courts and a room for stretching. Ugarte is representing a group of roughly 20

regular racquetball players, with some of the racqueteers having played the game together for more than 20 years. For them it goes beyond simple friendly competition. “We have each other over for Christmas,” said Ugarte. “It’s more than just a game, there is very much a social part to this.”

Without the courts, Ugarte fears the group would split up and lose the sense of camaraderie that marked the group’s game. David Aroeste, another member of the group, said that the recreation centre’s reversal will snuff out racquetball on the North Shore, as the only See Players page 3

For all the hue and cry over the impending death of B.C.’s film industry this time last year, 2013 turned out to be one of the busiest for film shoots in recent record on the North Shore. The City of North Vancouver, which is home to North Shore Studios, issued 50 permits for feature films, TV series, commercials and other media projects, compared to 40 in 2012 and only 27 in 2008. The District of North Vancouver had 90 film productions last year, resulting in $511,000 in permit revenues compared to 86 in 2012 and 44 in 2012. other recreation centre to offer the sport is Ron Andrews, whose sole court is currently being used for storage, according to both Aroeste and Ugarte. “Not only (is the Griffin recreational centre) trying to kill the sport in North Shore, but they are also killing our group, because it’s a very social group and we support each other,” added Aroeste. Aroeste has lived in North Vancouver for 24 years. As a new immigrant from Mexico City he said he faced the pressures of fitting into a new culture and job pressures. For Aroeste, meeting a group of like-minded individuals and the athletic challenges of the sport allowed him to lift himself out of depression. “I also had a heart issue abut five years ago, which I recovered from, but racquetball remains the only sport I can play. I can ski maybe for a run or two but then I start to feel pain, but I can easily go for three hours playing racquetball and feel great, because my body is so used to it after playing for years,” added Aroeste. Referring to the midJanuary letter addressed to certain members of the group, Aroeste said he was “pissed, because they sent it just a few days before the open house about the courts was scheduled. “We didn’t have time to prepare our case properly

and it was obvious it was set up like that on purpose.” This is not the ﬁrst time that the group has faced challenges. In 2006, the group were told by Delbrook Centre that the squash and racquetball courts would be closed. Aroeste said more than 560 signatures from squash, racquetball and other racquet sports helped save the courts from the chopping block. Cathy Matheson, North Vancouver Recreation Commission’s manager of administration and marketing, said that while 2012 plans included the convertible courts, it had since been determined that not enough people were using the courts in Delbrook to justify spending money on new courts. However, Matheson stated that the recreation commission was hoping to receive new information from architects about whether the courts could be included in the current design. Aroeste and the other players are skeptical of the rec commission’s cost argument, with Aroeste stating: “A conservative ‘cost scenario’ approximates $75,000 for the full three courts installed. This cost equates to 0.15 percent of the $49 million facility cost,” said Aroeste. Aroeste went on to say that with other athletes, such as table tennis and

Simulated oil spill hits Stearman

Anyone who hoped to visit West Vancouver’s Stearman Beach this week might have been out of luck as a simulated oil spill hit the shores Wednesday. The Western Canada Marine Response Corp. conducted exercises on Wednesday, designed to simulate an oil spill and test the company contractors and their response time, according to a press release issued last Wednesday. “This is a shoreline ﬂushing training exercise,”

said Michael Lowry, the media relations officer at Western Canada Marine Response. “So what that means is that in the event of a spill and the oil reaches the beach, there’s certain methods we use to clean that up. We put a boom around the area and use a flushing kit on the beach . . . flushing the oil back out into the water where it’s much easier to recover,” said Lowry. Lowry said Stearman was chosen because there are three mooring points for tankers on the beach, and while no fueling barge has taken up the contract

to refuel there, “there is permission to technically refuel, so we thought it would be a good location.” Due to Environment Canada regulations, there was no product added to the exercise. According to Lowry, the exercise went faster than the corporation had expected. “The prime purpose for us in these exercises is to make sure that the spots (for equipment, access to the beach) we have identiﬁed actually work. Instead, the oil spill response team ﬂushed seawater from the beach back to the inlet. The training exercise is part of the company’s “mandate to maintain

our state of readiness,” according to the press release. The response time standards posted by the group is deployment on scene within six hours for any spill under 150 tons, and within 12 hours for under 1,000 tons. The company previously conducted a much larger exercise last September in Howe Sound, in which they deployed equipment to clean a simulated 2,500tonne spill. The company plans to do a 1,000-tonne simulation in the fall of this year, according to Lowry. The District of West Vancouver approved the exercises and had a bylaw ofﬁcer at the proceedings. While Western Canada Marine Response train

in the event of a spill, an alliance of women activists, including representatives from local First Nations, plan to protest the expansion of the Trans Mountain pipeline, which would travel through the Lower Mainland. Groups involved include the Tsleil-Waututh Nation Sacred Trust, and Squamish and Musqueam nations, as well as Joanna Kerr, the executive director of Greenpeace Canada. The women will hold a banner saying “Wall of women opposing Kinder Morgan expansion,” according to Greenpeace Canada. The groups will protest Saturday at Ambleside Beach.

Metro Vancouver taxpayers will be on the hook for more than $100,000 in fines and environmental restoration costs after the region’s wastewater utility pleaded guilty to dumping raw sewage into Burrard Inlet. The outflow of untreated wastewater happened in July 2011 at Brockton Point in Stanley Park after a large mass of items that never should have been flushed down the toilet balled up and clogged a pump at the Chilco Pumping Station. Both Crown counsel and Metro’s Sewerage and Drainage District have agreed to ask a provincial court judge to impose a fine of $5,000 and a payment of $105,000 to the province’s environmental damages fund. Metro Vancouver is requesting that the funds be spent on environmental initiatives in the Lower Mainland. “Our sewer system cannot handle a lot of materials that some of us flush down the toilet,” stated a Metro Vancouver press release. “When baby wipes, disposable mop cloths, feminine hygiene products and other items go down the toilet they can clump together and form a large, solid mass.This mass then blocks pipes and pumps, which can damage equipment and cause sewage to overflow into the environment and, ultimately, costs taxpayers money.” If that isn’t enough to dissuade someone from flushing the unflushable, there’s also the thought that metro workers have to manually unblock pumping station pipes two to three times a week to keep the system running. The guilty plea came a week before Metro Vancouver marked 100 years since it entered the liquid waste business in order to preserve salmonbearing streams and stop outbreaks of typhoid fever near popular beaches.

The 2013 provincial election campaign was partly coloured by the emergence of Save B.C. Film, a movement of workers in the creative industry calling for more generous tax breaks to stop the outflow of film production to Ontario and southern U.S. states. The Liberals stood fast on their position that the tax credit regime had gone far enough, and later won the election. While Ontario and Quebec still offer more robust credits, it’s the falling Canadian dollar that is currently fueling the industry. “Business is good right now. The dollar is our friend these days,” said Peter Leitch, president of North Shore Studios. “It was one of the worst times in terms of film production that we’ve seen here in the past 20 years at the beginning of last

year. . . . When the dollar was around par last year in January, we were seeing some work going to other jurisdictions that had more aggressive incentives and it was a real cause for alarm.” With fewer productions coming to Canada, it left Ontario and B.C. to ﬁght over a smaller slice of the “Hollywood North” pie. Film industry professionals predicted the dollar would remain high, but it soon began a slow and steady tumble that still hasn’t bottomed out with the dollar now below US 90 cents. And while Ontario’s tax incentives still offer a better deal for U.S. productions, it isn’t necessarily winning their studios more work. “Yeah, (their taxes are lower) but with the dollar at this level, we’re certainly attracting more Los Angeles business than they are,” Leitch said. “The tax credits become a lot more critical in terms of being competitive or being the same as other jurisdictions when the dollar becomes a challenge for us.” Local talent and infrastructure are also to the point where producers may choose to ﬁlm here, regardless of tax credits or dollar value, said Richard Brownsey, president of Creative B.C., the agency

he world has lost one of its most proliﬁc — or at least visible — hatemongers. Fred Phelps, the patriarch of the Westboro Baptist Church, died in hospice care on Thursday. Church members spent their time showing up at the funerals of highproﬁle murder victims, dead soldiers and celebrities to shout through bullhorns and wave placards declaring that “God hates fags.” No tragedy was too sacred, no victim too innocent for Phelps and his church members to show up to agitate mourners, so long as it would generate more of the controversy they thrived on. Legal critics have pointed out that Phelps and his clan were usually more interested in suing the people they provoked into assaulting them than any kind of church ministry.

But rather than being a persuasive source of hatred for the LGBT community, Phelps appears to have had a rather counterproductive effect. He was more of an “only-in-America” sideshow than the leader of a movement. Only a handful of kooks took him seriously and he did more to generate sympathy for gays and lesbians than he did to gin up hate. However, that did not make his words much less hurtful, especially when the very real issue of LGBT people being shut out and ostracized by their faith’s leaders remains.Thankfully, many of those bronze-age glaciers are receding. Even Pope Francis has taken a “Who am I to judge?” stance. The last bit of irony, or perhaps, cowardice to close the book on the Westboro Baptist Church: Phelps has opted to have no funeral.

North Vancouver’s identity crisis is ludicrous

Dear Editor: Is this a schizophrenic city? Does it make sense to have two brains controlling the same body? I know it may conjure some funny joke about the male persuasion, but it’s a fact for North Vancouver. We have two brains making decisions for the same body. Not only is this a

bureaucratic mess, it is an impossible situation to explain to newly arrived residents, as it is illogical, arbitrary and nonsensical. The only reason I see a need to have two governing bodies over the exact same geographic area would be to preserve administrative jobs. At a time when austerity measures should be investigated by local

governments to help struggling homeowners by offering lower taxes, I can think of one easy solution: amalgamate. Stop the schizophrenic civic identity and focus on combining the strengths of the district and the city to stop cannibalizing each others business and civic opportunities. It’s crazy. In my life I have

experienced two major amalgamations. One, when the government imposed amalgamation on my high school district with another. The other was when my university was amalgamated with the University of British Columbia. In both situations, there was resistance and growing pains. But, the resistance and pains in

both came from those with a vested interest in keeping separate administrations, not from the best interests of combining the strengths of both regions. Yes, the identity crisis is ludicrous and the redundancies are crazy. As far as I am concerned, I live in North Vancouver regardless of an arbitrary border. The civic decisions

should reﬂect the best interests of the electorate, not the interests of some supervisors and managers. Big-spending MLAs have explaining to do It’s often the case in politics that a politician can spend a relatively small amount of money, yet reap a heck of a lot of trouble for it. Misspend a few million dollars? Don’t worry about it. Misspend tens of thousands of dollars? Get ready to be blasted. Alberta Premier Alison Redford saw herself forced from the premier’s ofﬁce for, among other things, trying to stick the taxpayers with a $45,000 expense bill, and now two B.C. Liberal MLAs have been bruised for making questionable spending decisions themselves. Justice Minister and Attorney-General Suzanne Anton’s decision to approve a contract worth up to $140,000 for former B.C. Liberal MLA John Les not only raised huge questions about her political judgment but also thrust her into the awkward position of being thrown under the bus by her boss, Premier Christy Clark. A day after Anton defended the contract (which was to have Les co-chair a review of earthquake preparedness) Clark announced it was unacceptable because it was too expensive and said it had been “withdrawn,” leaving her minister to explain how the blatant patronage payout had been concocted in the ﬁrst place. Meanwhile, Legislature Speaker Linda Reid had some explaining to do of her own. Once again, this bit of trouble did not involve a huge amount of dollars, but just enough to

View from the Ledge leave a mark. Reid, it seems, has been on a bit of a spending spree at the same time the B.C. Liberal government is bragging that its tight fiscal restraint policy is allowing it to balance the budget. Reid has spent more than $100,000 on various projects around the legislature and her constituency office, and some of them are questionable at best. But let’s deal with Anton first. While not all the details have been made public, I suspect the decision to appoint Les to the earthquake preparedness review had the general support of Clark, until it became known what kind of money he was potentially getting. Appointing Les to the review panel was a bit much to begin with. There’s no question it smacks of political patronage, but the B.C. Liberals have demonstrated on numerous occasions they don’t shy away from handing out plum patronage posts (Les, in fact, already has a $60,000 position as chair of the Farm Industry

Review Board). No, this was all about the money. Clark’s political instincts, which are usually pretty keen, told her paying a political insider $140,000 simply wasn’t going to cut it with the public. Anton, on the other hand, demonstrated a complete lack of political acumen. Compounding her credibility problem was her nonsensical and mysterious defense of her actions. Her ofﬁce issued

a statement two days after the contract was cancelled that Les’ appointment constituted an “emergency” so there was no need to send the contract out to public tender. An emergency? Really? The whole Les debacle gives rise to speculation that she may not survive in the justice portfolio when Clark shufﬂes her cabinet, which she will do eventually. We shall see. As for the freespending Reid, there’s no

question she’ll continue in her post as speaker despite the controversy she’s created for herself. Still, she’s had her knuckles rapped by her own colleagues, which is unusual. Reid quietly spent more than $40,000 to install a new computer console in front of the speaker’s chair in the legislative chamber, more than $13,000 for a members’ TV lounge in the legislature library (which has a $733 table

for mufﬁns and coffee) and $79,000 for security improvements to her constituency ofﬁce. Reid apologized to the legislature’s management committee (composed of MLAs from both the government party and the Opposition) but she’s basically been served notice to rein in her spending spree. Grandmother guilty of obstruction Senior tried to buy husband’s way out of child sex abuse case

A 68-year-old grandmother, formerly from North Vancouver, was sentenced to six months of house arrest this week for attempting to buy her husband’s way out of a child sexual abuse investigation for $100,000. The woman was handed the sentence in North Vancouver provincial court March 13 after pleading guilty to a charge of obstruction of

justice. Crown prosecutor Grace Oh told the court at the time the woman made the offer, in 2011, her husband was under investigation for allegations he had sexually abused two step-granddaughters as well as his stepdaughters, when those women were children. Oh said while the police investigation was underway, the grandmother phoned up her ex-son-in-law — the father of the two

granddaughters — and offered to pay money if he would ensure the complaints against her husband were withdrawn. Soon after, the woman sent an email, offering to deposit $50,000 for each of the two girls into a registered education savings plan if they dropped the complaints. “You said you want him to rot in jail,” the woman wrote in the email. “This will destroy me too and will greatly impact my entire family. This is why I am hoping for a more humane solution.” The son-in-law refused the offer and instead went to police. Oh asked for a six to

eight month sentence, saying the incident had occurred within the context of a “severely dysfunctional family” where allegations of sexual abuse had been known about for years. “The approach was made to the one person who was willing to stand up and say no,” she said. The woman’s defence lawyer asked for a conditional discharge, saying his client had taken responsibility for her actions, had serious health problems in recent years and was stressed and ashamed. The woman also apologized directly, telling the judge that she acted

out of fear. “I’m very, very sorry for this,” she said. Judge William Rodgers said a conditional sentence was needed to denounce the conduct. “If the financial inducement had been successful, it is likely the prosecution would have been made much more difficult,” he said. He sentenced the woman to house arrest, with orders to be at home all day except for three hours — or with permission — during the first three months. In the last three months, the

woman must be home from 6 p.m. to 9 a.m. each day. He also put her on a year’s probation. Under a publication, ban neither the woman nor members of her family can be named to protect the identities of alleged victims in the case. Following the police investigation, the woman’s husband was eventually charged with several sexual offences against family members. Those charges have not yet been proven in court. A trial is set for later this year.

Those who love Mother Nature’s Stairmaster will have to content themselves with the gym substitute, as the Grouse Grind remains closed due to a number of safety issues. While the lower sections of the trail might currently be free of danger, there are signiﬁcant amounts of snow and ice on the upper portions of the trail, a release states. Metro Vancouver’s media ofﬁcer, Greg Valou, wrote in the release that hikers who

ignore the warnings put themselves, “maintenance staff and North Shore Rescue crews at risk,” and that “crews will suspend work if there are any hikers on the trail.” The main concern is slipping and falling, according to Valou, though there is the added danger of rock falls due to rocks becoming loose during the winter. The Grind will be opened when maintenance of the trail is complete, and all of the ice and snow are removed from the entirety of the 853-metre trail.

Meal program serves seniors and shut-ins

Maintaining a healthy meal plan throughout the week is difﬁcult for many people. For those with mobility issues it can be even harder. Shopping for groceries and preparing three proper meals a day can be almost impossible to do without help. During the past 46 years, the North Shore Meals on Wheels program has been delivering that help. Each week, more than 120 volunteers help prepare and deliver hot meals to clients across the North Shore from Horseshoe Bay to Deep Cove. Between 11,000 and 12,000 meals are delivered each year. Don Murray, board chairman for the local Meals on Wheels society, says he believes without their service many clients would not be able to continue living on their own at home. Most of the clients are seniors and some are people who have recently returned home from a hospitalization and are undergoing some rehabilitation.

“It’s mostly folks that primarily due to mobility issues can’t get out easily to shop let alone cook, and so we provide a service whereby they can have a hot meal delivered to their door three times a week,” says Murray. Hot meals are delivered every Monday,Wednesday and Friday, and many clients purchase more than one meal so they have one to reheat the next day as well. Each meal is $6.50 and includes an entrée, soup, a roll and dessert. Diabetic meals are also available. The food is prepared at Cheers Restaurant in North Vancouver and is delivered in bulk to two local churches where it’s broken down into meals by volunteers and packaged into travelling containers to be delivered. “Most people use it as a supplement,” says Murray about the food. The meals are often bought by adult children of seniors who want to ensure their parents get a decent hot meal at least a few times a week. In addition to the food, the Meals on Wheels drivers also provide some human

interaction, notes Murray. “We are sometimes the only person that they see in the day,” he says. The volunteer drivers are not required to be firstaid certified, but Murray says they can provide some measure of safety because they visit their clients on a regular basis and can call for help if needed. There have been times when a driver has had to call emergency services for a client in some medical distress, he notes. Meals on Wheels is a non-profit group.The cost of the meals just covers the cost of the food, and Murray says the program would not be possible without their many volunteers. “We’ve got a great bunch of volunteers and many of them stay volunteers for many, many years,” he says, adding they are always looking for more volunteers. Dawn Pemberton is no stranger to the spotlight. For years, the Vancouverbased powerhouse has put her vocal chops to good use, gracing many a stage, collaborating with other artists on their records, as

well as coaching rising stars. However, the acclaimed singer is currently in the throes of recording her debut solo album, which is proving to be both “exciting and terrifying at the same time,” she laughs. “It’s time for my own thing. I’ve had a lot of fun working and collaborating with other people and on other projects and that’s great. But now I’m looking forward to offering what I have and that’s what I want to foster right now,” she says. Pemberton describes her upcoming album, comprised of all-originals with the exception of one cover, as soul-inﬂuenced with a bit of funk and some jazz.

I have chosen some simple recipes to try cooking with my kids, what are some easy ways to make the recipes healthier?

Now that you have had the chance to introduce your kids to the kitchen and pick out some quick one-pot meals, it’s time to learn how to make simple switches to make your recipes more nutritious.

Cooking gives you the power to control the nutrition and cost of your meals. To add more fruits and vegetables to your meals, pureé butternut squash to homemade macaroni and cheese. Grate carrots, zucchini and finely chop spinach into pasta sauce or into a colourful lasagna. Create a homemade soup with puréed fruit or vegetables, such as creamy tomato and basil, or roasted red pepper and apple. Stir canned puréed pumpkin into whole grain pancake batter. Make fresh salsa or guacamole with whole grain

crackers. Serve baked sweet potato fries as a quick snack. Offer healthy vegetables for a fun DIY pizza on whole grain English muffin. Make stove-popped popcorn as a fun activity and a healthy snack. To make your baking healthier, replace at least half of the allpurpose white flour with whole grain flour. Replace a quarter of the sugar with skim milk powder, and add vanilla extract to intensity sweetness. Replace half of the fat in muffins and cookies with mashed fruit or vegetables, such as unsweetened applesauce, mashed bananas, or puréed sweet potatoes. Replace 1 egg with ¼ cup of tofu in cakes. Add shredded zucchini to chocolate chip muffins. Try these simple switches without sacrificing flavour. Use evaporated milk instead of cream for a rich Alfredo sauce. Mix PC 0% MF Greek Yogurt and dill, and use instead of mayonnaise in tuna or

Kermit, Miss Piggy, Fozzie and the gang are as sweet as ever, but as far as the human actors go, cutesy has been replaced by snarky in Disney’s newest Muppets ﬁlm, Muppets Most Wanted. It had to happen. Just look at the casting: the earnestness of Jason Segel (who co-wrote and executive-produced the 2011 ﬁlm) and Amy Adams has been scuttled in favour of Ricky Gervais and Tina Fey, who have built a career on sarcastic wit. The tonal shift is evident from the opening scene, which announces that sequels are never quite as good as the original and that “the studio wants more, while they wait for Tom Hanks to do Toy Story 4.” And so the Muppets brainstorm ideas

for a new film; an Esther Williams extravaganza, perhaps, or GonzoWith the Wind? The Swedish Chef even proposes a Swedish existential film. They finally settle on a crime caper and are approached by Dominic Badguy (pronounced “Bad-GEE, it’s French”), a wily agent with an ulterior motive for offering the Muppets a world tour. While Kermit is hesitant to commit, Dominic (Gervais) promises the members of the show luxurious digs and sold-out performances. A power struggle ensues, and unbeknownst to the Muppets — even his beloved, Miss Piggy — Kermit is replaced by his evil doppelganger, Constantine “the most dangerous frog in the world.” Mistaken for Constantine, Kermit is taken, Hannibal Lecterstyle, to a Siberian gulag run by matron Nadja (Tina Fey), while the Muppets take their show on the road. First stop: Berlin, “the world capital of comedy.”

As the Muppets cavort with guest stars such as Salma Hayek (wearing red spandex and running from the bulls) and Christoph Waltz (doing a waltz, what else?), Constantine and Dominic rob adjacent museums of treasures that will ultimately lead them to London “home of the Crown Jewels . . . and good manners.” In pursuit are Modern Family’s Ty Burrell as a French Interpol agent and Sam The Eagle, a pairing that allows for some poisson-out-of-water jabs at the Continent’s tiny cars and outdated technology, as well as their eight-week vacations and six-hour lunches. This goes on amidst Miss Piggy’s feverish wedding planning, despite the fact that poor Kermit hasn’t even popped the question. Kids may not follow the story thread of the multiple heists — for a dead man’s map, key, locket — but it hardly matters.There’s enough colour and pizzazz for kids, while the humour,

old-school Muppet Show references and cameos are clearly geared at nostalgiaseekers. Ah yes, the cameos. Ray Liotta and Danny Trejo are among the chorus line of Gulag prisoners; Miss Piggy sings a duet with her idol, Celine Dion; Sean Combs,Tony Bennett, Lady Gaga, Saoirse Ronan, Chloe Grace-Moretz, Hugh Bonneville, Stanley Tucci, Frank Langella, Zach Galiﬁanakis make appearances. Josh Groban spends most of his screen time singing from solitary; James McAvoy is a blinkand-you’ll-miss-him delivery man. And “what kind of an usher are you?” complains a guest at the wedding, to none other than Usher.The only face kids will likely recognize is Ross Lynch, that blond kid from the Disney channel. A lot relies on the inherent comedy of watching Gervais play alongside a frog, especially when he’s belting out “I’m number two!” Entertaining, yes, but not half as lovable as the 2011 version.

The tree isn’t dead. It should be. After the punishment it’s endured and the nourishment it’s been denied it should be cold in the ground. Only it isn’t. It’s growing, spreading its branches and breaking through kitchen ﬂoorboards as it reaches for the sun. That singular image of a tree rising like a zombie is the genesis for writer/ director Yael Farber’s Mies Julie. Set on Freedom Day in post-apartheid South Africa, Farber’s play reworks Swedish playwright August Strindberg’s

sensation of 1888, Miss Julie. Julie, white, is the young, reckless, heiress to the land. Bored and half-drunk, she casts her entitled gaze on her black servant, John. John and Julie grew up together. Julie owns the land. John’s ancestors are buried in the soil beneath the farmhouse. “In this domestic heat we spend a night confronting all that apartheid has left as its residue,” Farber writes in an email. Farber read Strindberg’s love triangle at a Johannesburg drama school when she was a student. “It made very little impression,” she writes. “I do, however, remember thinking it would be a striking story to tell in South Africa. I did not think of it again for the next 20-odd years.”

When she did think of the play, she thought of the tree. “Powerful pictures always come before words. They are my true north,” she writes. Although she found Strindberg’s words “rather tame,” Farber was moved by the story’s brutality and brutal honesty. “The catalyst for this searing honesty between them — despite their social differences — is the brewing and ﬁnally consummated sex.” A review in the New Yorker praised Farber’s script but blasted her direction for turning the play into pornography. As a writer, Farber says Ernest Hemingway is often in the room with her, reminding her that a writer’s job is to tell the truth. Farber’s Mies Julie takes place in the kitchen of a farmhouse in the arid climes of the semi-desert Karoo. The play is intended to deal with land redistribution in South Africa, according to Farber. The land itself is harsh, sort of like America’s breadbasket in the days when the region stood on the brink of the dust bowl. “If you are tender out here, you drown,” Julie says. She is referring to the

suicide of her mother. Because of her mother’s death, Julie was largely raised by Christine, John’s mother. “Most white South Africans will have been tended to by a black mother in their childhood,” Farber explains. In Strindberg’s original, Christine is Jean’s (John’s) fiancé. But rather than examining a romantic complication, Farber is more interested in John’s familial ties. “Christine as a mother creates a far more powerful figure of accountability in John’s life than a fiancé would have,” Farber writes. “John is beholden to his ancestors.” Christine is the one who taught John where his ancestors were buried. It’s because of her lessons that John can call Julie’s forefathers “squatters.” The Republic of South Africa has changed for the better in the last two decades, but the past is still alive in that stretch of land between the Atlantic and Indian Oceans. “The shrapnel of those years — the loss of what can never be replaced — lives on,” Farber writes. Both John and Julie are bound. John by his history and Julie by her attitude of superiority, however, the play is optimistic. “What I have written is a piece that continually

Dear New Colours: This spring there are colour options for everyone and their fashion needs. Soft pastels are trendy. Icy tones of the pastels are also popular. Neutrals are used as a bridge from one colour range to another. Explore the trendy colours that suit you best. The biggest trend this season is the ombré look. It is when you wear many shades of one colour from lightest to darkest. This can be done in every colour. White, grey and black is the easiest combination to carry this ombré look. If you want to tread lightly, then pastel pink to red and light blue to electric blue are the most popular ombré colour graduations to start with. The look is to have the range of a soft colour to a bold colour. It is a jump from the colour blocking popular in previous seasons. Three to four shades are best. Any less looks too simple. Any more looks too busy.You can ﬁnd pieces from tops to bottoms with the ombré look, or you can create the look with solid colour pieces. Belts, scarves and shoes are a great way to add a third colour to your outﬁt. Other colours that can create the ombré look are yellow, orange, mint green and lavender. As long as you like the idea of coloured bottoms, these ombré colour varieties can be quite bold. Although neutrals are not in style this year, they are being used to bridge the pastels with the brights without having the ombré

look. Medium grey, sand and khaki green are warm and earthy and a great option for ladies who don’t want to wear ombré from neck to toe. As much as ombré is trendy, so is the pop art look. Prints that have an artistic abstract or graphic image are popular. The print can be a Picasso face, a Pollock splatter of paint or a Lichtenstein comic strip with words. The colours used in these prints are not necessarily trendy. It is the print that is trendy. I am seeing funky prints in tops, bottoms, shoes and handbags. It’s cool, fun and sophisticated with a street art style. There is also a ﬂoral trend for a soft feminine look, which uses the ombré colours. The look features tone on tone petals, large and small. This is a great option for ladies who like prints and want to stay in fashion. A super trendy look is to mix a pattern piece with an ombré piece. It is easier to pull off with fewer and similar colours. But, if you have a strong fashion sense, then contrasting the pieces is the biggest, boldest statement this season. Since there are so many colour and print options, I suggest you look at yourself in the mirror longer. If your ﬁrst impression is that you have too much going on, then pare back. Better safe than sorry.

Former meteorologist joins Anaïd

Veteran meteorologist Claire Martin, of CBC fame, has made the transition from weather forecasting to media production, signing on as the managing director of North Vancouver production company Anaïd. Putting aside her award-winning work as both a meteorologist and a presenter, Martin says that the change was needed and a long time in the works. “This is something I’ve wanted to do for awhile,” says Martin. “Margaret (Mardirossian, Anaïd Productions founder) and I have known each other for 15 years. Margaret was in need of a new managing director . . . the opportunity came up and I just thought ‘Time to take on something new and creative.’” Anaïd Productions’ portfolio features mostly reality-TV shows, their most popular to date being The Liquidator, which follows a Burnaby liquidation store owner and his skills in negotiation and bargaining. On her new challenges as managing director, Martin says that there are a lot of similarities to

her old job but plenty of differences, with more dayto-day work at the CBC while at Anaïd, the focus is on bigger, more long-term projects. Martin is best known as the former senior meteorologist for the CBC, presenting the weather forecast alongside The National’s Peter Mansbridge. Leaving the national broadcaster in the ﬁnal weeks of February, her co-workers said tearful goodbyes on air and even featured Rick Mercer stopping by for a quick hug and a gift during her forecast. “I miss the CBC,” says Martin, who started at Anaïd two weeks ago. “There was no reason for me to leave other than I wanted to try something new, so that was tough. Great job, great people . . . I wouldn’t lie. I miss them.” While she misses the people, Martin says she doesn’t miss the stress of appearing on air, which got “harder and harder over time.” “It’s actually pretty tough to be on air constantly, you’ve got to look good, every single day . . . After a while, you just think ‘Wow, it’s time for somebody younger to come on air and do what I do.’”

a long time ago.” “(Emigrating) was hard. I don’t regret it in the slightest obviously. I’ve been out here almost 30 years now. I don’t consider England home anymore, Canada is now home. “But it’s a tough transition,” she admits. “We speak the same language but sometimes we don’t.”

Despite spending a number of years in Toronto with CBC, Martin says her love of the West Coast always drew her back. “My ofﬁce right now, I look out onto the mountains, although they are a bit shrouded . . . It’s beautiful out here,” she says. “I love North Vancouver. It’s as close

to home as anywhere in Canada.” On her new job, Martin admits that the work is challenging but she relishes the opportunity to try something more creative, which is far more exciting to her. “It’s so different from what I have done, so it’s giving me a breath of fresh air.”

the Matrix is none of those things. The Matrix isn’t stylish, it’s simply there. The optional S package does add a tiny bit of pizzazz, with the aforementioned 17-inch alloys, front and rear aero-kit and a rear hatch spoiler, but it’s still a tad humdrum. This is not a ﬂashy car. That wouldn’t be very Canadian. Environment The Matrix carries a Toyota badge up front, but judging from the insides, a Rubbermaid one would be far more appropriate. While the Corolla now looks reasonably upscale inside, to the point of including a stitched-look dash, the Matrix is from the old school Toyota line, and is festooned inside with plastic-not-so-fantastic. The driver’s seat fabric does look pretty durable, but the armrests are unyielding. Rear seat room is surprisingly good, and while taller folks might not

find the little Toyota to be especially comfortable, everybody else will. What’s more, the rear cargo area remains exemplary. It’s all plastic too, but that just means it’s highly durable and capable of handling bags of soil for the home gardener, or wet dogs, or lumberjack equipment. The seats fold as flat as the prairies — not always that common in the hatchback market — and the S model includes a flatfolding passenger seat as well. If you’re used to “S” standing for “sport,” then in this case, the sport is cross-country skiing. The controls are simple and easy to use. One of the three rings of the gauge cluster is flattened, as if somebody sat on it, but they’re easy to read. It’s all a combination of slightly outdated, but familiar and unchallenging.

The road noise is really quite loud — some research indicates this may be down to Toyota’s choice of OEM tires, but the echo chamber of all this plastic inside is surely partly to blame. All hatchbacks can be boomy, and the Matrix is no exception. It is not fast, and body roll is pronounced. While there once was a performance model in the Matrix range — the sprightly 180 h.p. XRS — this current car is essentially a Corolla hatchback, and it is not at all interested in zippy driving. The manual might be a little better here. Also of note, the rear visibility is ﬂat-out terrible. Because Toyota’s made this car a hatchback rather than a wagon, there aren’t any windows in the 3/4 panels and backing out from angled parking relies on placing trust and faith in your fellow motorist to stop — you simply can’t see them. So, plenty of demerits

truncated hood, one will find a 1.8-litre, 132 h.p. four-cylinder engine mated to either a fivespeed manual gearbox or a four-speed automatic. In today’s world of CVTs, direct-injection, and small-displacement turbochargers, this sort of hardware is the motoring equivalent of Fred Flintstone’s feet. The suspension, too, is not set up for corner carving, and the traction control is as nervous as a new parent watching a toddler near a puddle. If a wheel so much as thinks about spinning, it scurries to the rescue, flapping its electronic arms anxiously and urging you to be careful. And yet, for all that, it’s not so bad. What we have here, on the face of it, appears to be some sort of car. The pedal on the right makes it go, and the pedal on the left makes it stop. You can put things and people into it. It’s little, yet big inside.

a French company, they were running on French Michelins, and both were driven by French racers. In first position, Jean-Pierre Jabouille was a veteran of Formula One and LeMans, and brought an engineer’s precision to his driving. Just behind, the rookie René Arnoux was ready to prove himself. Villeneuve had a strategy. Somehow, he must get ahead of the two Renaults from the very start, and stay ahead. He knew his Ferrari didn’t have the punch out of the corners to effect a pass, and he knew the long uphill sections at the Dijon circuit favoured the stronger turbocharged engines even more. The flat-12 in his Ferrari had 500 h.p., just as the Renaults did, but it made it further up in the rev-range, and didn’t have quite the down-low power to accelerate hard. It wasn’t going to be easy. The green flag dropped and Villeneuve struck. Smoking his tires, he slipped between Arnoux and Jabouille, and instantly started putting distance on both. Jabouille dropped in behind in second place, while Arnoux struggled with his start and dropped to a lamentable ninth. Villeneuve’s strategy was very simple, but it had a flaw. Despite all his skill and his fierce driving style, the Ferrari’s tires and chassis weren’t up to the job. Every lap he took at full speed was wearing down the rubber, and what’s more, the French were beginning to recover. Jabouille maintained his position, figuring out the course and learning how his car responded with the extra power provided by the cool intake temperatures. Slowly, he began reeling in his French Canadian rival. Arnoux, meanwhile, was having the drive of his life. He had quickly recovered from his semi-disastrous start, and was picking up SeeVilleneuve page 43

teams were running 3.0litre engines, the rules provided for a 1.5-litre turbocharged offering, and Renault believed the greater torque and rev-happy nature of the forced-induction smalldisplacement engine would be a success. Finally, at the 1979 Grand Prix, they were to prove the soundness of their theory to the world. After qualifying, the twin yellow-and-black Renaults sat proudly in the first and second position on the grid. They had decimated the field, and were ready to clinch victory. Just one little problem. One little Canadian problem. Sitting just behind the two French cars in a bright red Ferrari 312 T4 was a French Canadian man whose name had already attracted worldwide attention. All of Canada knew who he was, the boy from Richelieu, Que. who had won the 1978 Canadian Grand Prix, the man who world champion Niki Lauda would call “the craziest devil I ever met.” Gilles Villeneuve. Villeneuve’s flat-12 powered Ferrari wasn’t far off the pace of the two turbocharged cars, but he knew he had his work cut out for him.The previous day had been almost unbearably hot, but the weather was now overcast and cool. The Achilles heel of any turbocharged car is heat, and as temperatures rise, power levels fade away.With cool intake temperatures and cold air to bathe the engines of the two Renaults, the twin French juggernauts stood a very good chance of winning — as long as they didn’t break. The crowd was electric with anticipation, as news of the successful qualifying performance drew people in from the surrounding areas. Villeneuve refuses to back down From page 42 the pace. Dropping into a rhythm, he began to climb up the ranks. There was no giving way to legends like Lauda or Nelson Piquet — Arnoux simply spooled up the boost on his powerful Renault and blasted them into the weeds. Soon, he was just behind Jabouille, and the twin Renaults began hunting down the Ferrari. Halfway through the 80-lap race,Villeneuve must have sensed he wasn’t going to win. His tires were cooked, worn through from maintaining high levels of cornering speeds to counter the straight-line punch of the Renaults. Jabouille continued to gain despite all his efforts, and on the 46th lap, the Frenchman made his move. As soon as his Renault passed, Jabouille immediately abandoned his chess-game approach and drove his car as hard as possible.There was simply no way the Ferrari could keep up, and the gap between first and second immediately stretched to multiple seconds. Arnoux soon crowded up behind Villeneuve, trying for the same performance. The crowd was already on their feet, cheering Jabouille and the surety of his win. Would they see a one-two podium finish on French soil? It had been 30 years since a French driver had taken victory here, and hearts were in mouths. On the 78th lap Arnoux cut to the inside corner after the long straight and went for it. It was a killing stroke, a coup de grâce, and it should have meant a hard-fought third place finish for Villeneuve. But Gilles heard something. Over the howling roar of the Ferrari’s flat-12, he could hear Arnoux’s V-6 misfiring at the top end of the rev range. It still had the low-end torque to make the passing moves, and Arnoux’s tires were in far better shape than those of Villeneuve’s Ferrari, but suddenly the French’s power advantage had vanished. The cars were lapping the track in a little more than two minutes, and in the final two laps, the greatest battle ever seen

in Formula One racing got underway. First, even as Arnoux cut to the inside,Villeneuve

refused to give way. He clung to the outside, just a nose behind, but Arnoux’s shorter line meant that the

Frenchman couldn’t be stopped. He moved into second place and the crowd roared.

But Villeneuve was right there, staying on Arnoux, not letting him surge ahead as Jabouille had. The pair scorched through the rest of the lap, and crossed the line in a row. Diving into the corner, right where Arnoux

had made his passing move, Villeneuve suddenly darted to the inside, locking up his brakes and wreathing his car in a cloud of smoke. His Ferrari responded, despite See Racer page 44

His car was twitching and sliding, nearly all its grip gone. Arnoux dove in again, and the cars went around the corner exactly side-by-side.They banged wheels, trading places only by a nose. Arnoux slipped ahead, but misjudged and went offtrack briefly.With the loss of acceleration,Villeneuve once again took the lead. They collided again, and Villeneuve dropped behind, but in the last hairpin, he cut aggressively inside, and held it, held it, held it for just long enough to get across the line. The cars finished Villeneuve second, then Arnoux third, the split between them less than one quarter of a second. As the cars circled on their victory lap, both drivers waved to each other, and to the crowd.When they finally stopped, both men, charged with energy, leapt from their machines

to shake hands. There was no animosity, only the pure joy of racing at the highest level, and the respect for a battle well fought. In 1982, while qualifying for the Belgian Grand Prix, Villeneuve would be killed in a crash with Jochen Mass. Mass would later withdraw from racing, not out of any sense of guilt — the accident wasn’t his fault — but because of the devastating effect it had on Villeneuve’s young family. Canada too reeled from the loss, and the name of Villeneuve became part of our national legend. His is a story of what could-havebeen, as well as the glory of what was. Last year, for the opening of a special exhibition at the Enzo Ferrari museum in Italy, Villeneuve’s Ferrari 312 T4 was started and driven on the streets of Modena. The police escort cleared the way, and the racecar snarled and howled its tribute to its fallen master. On that day, at the wheel, was René Arnoux; no one else could have been more ﬁtting.
