Council halts Seymour projects

Moratorium, with exceptions, endorsed over gridlock concerns JEREMY SHEPHERD jshepherd@nsnews.com

Developers beware: the Seymour area is largely off limits until 2016, following a unanimous

vote by District of North Vancouver council Monday. Exceptions have been granted for the north side of the 3500 block of Mount Seymour

Parkway, three singlefamily subdivisions, and the McKenzie Barge properties. A trio of four-storey apartments proposed for the industrial site passed first reading earlier this year. All other development will be considered premature until March 2016.

Recalling a summer spent in gridlock, Coun. Doug MacKay-Dunn said he was happy to stymie development in Seymour. “Just the other day, my wife — she who must be obeyed — was telling me that she ran into a traffic jam on the way out of Seymour and she ran into a traffic jam on the way back

in to Seymour and she asked me: ‘What are you doing about it, Doug?’” he said. Coun. Roger Bassam also noted traffic problems, emphasizing the need to alleviate the “nightmare” faced by commuters trying to get to Blueridge while a traffic jam clogs the Ironworkers Memorial

Second Narrows Crossing. While the council resolution is not a moratorium on development, it does render a new project’s chances “practically nil,” said Coun. Alan Nixon. “You put in an application for

Protest decries election changes BRENT RICHTER brichter@nsnews.com

Accusations that the Conservative government is trying to disenfranchise voters drew more than 50 protesters to North Vancouver MP Andrew Saxton’s constituency office Wednesday. The protest was part of a larger effort organized by advocacy groups, the Council of Canadians and Leadnow.ca, that saw the groups deliver an 80,000plus name petition calling on the Tories to amend the Fair Elections Act. If the bill passes as-is, it will end the practice of vouching for fellow voters who do not have proof of an address and the yellow voter registration cards will no longer be accepted as proof. That’s a calculated move to weed out and suppress voters unlikely to support the Conservatives — youth, seniors, migrants and lowSee Saxton page 5

Ambulance station fate murky

Paramedics concerned aboutWV JEREMY SHEPHERD jshepherd@nsnews.com

West Vancouver’s one ambulance won’t be stationed in the municipality’s new public safety building. Where it will be stationed is both a mystery and a source of concern for North Vancouver paramedic Cameron Eby. Eby, a provincial executive for the Ambulance Paramedics of B.C. union, said it’s a matter of time before the current location adjacent to the fire station on 16th Street is shuttered. “It’s an old, run-down house that’s been converted to an ambulance station, so to think that it could get worse from there is hard to fathom, but it just might,” he said. Eby said he didn’t know when the eviction would happen, “but it is going to happen.” A representative from B.C. Ambulance Service did not confirm or deny Eby’s comments. “We have no plans for the foreseeable future,” said Kelsie Carwithen, media relations manager with B.C. Ambulance Service. Eby was critical of the ambulance service management. “Unfortunately, the Ambulance Service doesn’t have a terrific track record for securing new land or buildings to operate their ambulances.” In 2013, B.C.

With a new ambulance station under construction at Lions Gate Hospital, Eby suggested the service may move to a similar setup on the North Shore. “Our feeling is that they will likely shut down the West Vancouver ambulance station completely when they’re evicted and it will be centralized to North Vancouver,” he said. That would be a mistake, according to Eby. “Our opinion is that the response times would suffer from that change because the ambulance

would — at least twice a day when it’s doing its shift changes — have to leave the community,” he said. There can also be problems when an ambulance is parked outdoors and exposed to the elements, said Eby. Drugs like epinephrine — a dose of adrenaline used to treat life-threatening allergic reactions — and Narcan — which is often prescribed for drug overdoses — can be compromised by extreme cold. If the temperature in the ambulance drops below a certain level, there’s a possibility of ice crystals forming in injectable drugs and IV solutions. Additionally, response

times can lag if a paramedic needs to clear snow off the hood or de-fog the windshield. In Deep Cove, the ambulance station is “really quite deplorable,” according to Eby. The station is a windowless room in a longterm care facility, and the bathrooms are at the other end of the building, Eby said. The Deep Cove station is considered a low priority on the North Shore, Eby explained. When there are only two ambulances available to serve the North Shore — because others have been called to neighbouring areas for instance —Deep Cove

loses its ambulance so that paramedics can be split between West and North Vancouver. When there is only one ambulance to serve the North Shore, the ambulance is parked at Westview. This happens several times a day, Eby said. Eby has previously called for a second ambulance in West Vancouver. When responding to a call in the British Properties from Deep Cove, the response time can be as long as 25 minutes, according to Eby. “We find it completely inadequate to only have one ambulance to begin with,” he said.

An 81-year-old woman is in hospital and an 81year-old man is facing fines and potentially losing his licence after a hit-and-run in North Vancouver Wednesday. RCMP received several calls from witnesses just after 12:30 p.m. after they saw the driver hit the woman as she was crossing in the marked crosswalk at Keith Road and St. Andrews Avenue. “He struck her on the right leg and ultimately ran over her foot as well,” said Cpl. Richard De Jong, North Vancouver RCMP spokesman. “Eyewitnesses saw this and followed him down to (Lonsdale) Quay where he parked his car. . . The driver is fully co-operative. He claims to not even be aware of striking the pedestrian.” The victim was taken to Lions Gate Hospital where she is expected to make a full recovery after treatment to her leg and foot. The driver is facing violation tickets for failing to remain at the scene of an accident and failing to yield to a pedestrian. Police will also write to the superintendent of motor vehicles to request that the man’s licence be reviewed, which typically involves being retested.

Pets perish in townhouse blaze spotted by bus driver BRENT RICHTER brichter@nsnews.com

An Upper Lonsdale townhouse was heavily damaged by fire Wednesday afternoon. District of North Vancouver Fire and Rescue Services raced to the home in the 3000 block of St. Mary’s Avenue just before 4 p.m. after a bus driver noticed smoke billowing from the back of the building and called 9-1-1. By the time crews arrived, there was heavy

smoke and flames, putting the rest of the townhouse complex in jeopardy. “It quickly got into the attic space but the crew did a great job aggressively attacking and getting at it quickly. They did a good job extinguishing it in a fairly quick manner and stopped any chance of it spreading to those neighbouring homes,” said assistant fire chief Jason DeRoy. The homeowners, an elderly couple, were vacationing in the U.S.

at the time of the fire. Though no one was injured, the couple’s two cats perished in the blaze, according to North Vancouver RCMP. On Thursday, DeRoy said it was not clear whether the scorched townhouse unit was damaged beyond repair. The cause of the fire is still under investigation with RCMP and fire investigators on scene Thursday and Friday, though police say it is not considered suspicious.

Saxton cites fraud issue From page 1 income people, according to protesters. About 120,000 people across Canada used those methods in the last election. “It’s essentially Harper trying to change the rules of the game to win while the rest of us lose. We’re here to say this is not a game. This is our fundamental right,” said organizer Brigette DePape. Leadnow organizer Jolan Bailey called Bill C-23 an “appalling attack on our democracy.” “With voter turnout lower than it’s been in Canada’s history, this is the time when we need to make it easier for people to vote. Not harder. This bill takes

us in the wrong direction,” he said. The petition also calls for Elections Canada to have the ability to force party operatives to testify — something aimed at getting to the root of the 2011 robocalls scandal. Instead, the government bill would take the ability to investigate and enforce election fraud away from the agency, and hand it to an independent commissioner. But Saxton said rather than threaten the integrity of elections, the Fair Elections Act would make it much harder to fraudulently vote more than once or vote in a different riding. “The whole point of this is to make sure every

vote is a legitimate vote,” he said noting that fraudulent votes essentially cancel out legitimate ones. Saxton cited a study carried out after the 2011 election that concluded there were 50,000 cases of “serious problems” in the way people who were vouched for were registered. “If we didn’t do something to help change that, we would be negligent,” Saxton said. Though there isn’t any evidence that any of the “serious problems” resulted in fraudulent votes, Saxton said it was almost certain. “I took probability and statistics in university and I’m sure anybody could say if you’ve got 50,000 cases

DNV ‘applying the brakes’ From page 1 redevelopment or rezoning at your own risk,” he said. “I’m not eager to see too much more development happen at Seymour until infrastructure and the transportation network can tolerate it.” As long as the pace of development outpaces transportation improvements, growth will limit access to bridges, hospitals and schools, said Eric Andersen, who was speaking on behalf of

the Seymour Local Plan Monitoring Committee. Seymour has seen 222 new units in the past 11 years. However, if developments on Tsleil Waututh land and other nearby projects are included in the tabulation, that number swells to 851 units in 11 years. It is entirely appropriate for council to “apply the brakes” until infrastructure has a chance to catch up, according to Andersen. The district needs to focus on sustainable

of serious problems, then there’s got to be some cases of double voting and voter fraud. No question,” he said. Protesters also took issue with the fact Elections Canada will no longer be able to use its advertising budget to encourage voter turnout, but Saxton defends the decision. “We would love to see voter turnout get higher, but as it is right now, voter turnout has been on the decline for the last number of years so the system isn’t working,” he said. “The focus here is for Elections Canada to make sure people know when, where, how and what ID they should bring with them in order to vote.”

development as opposed to “continuing to sprawl up our mountainside,” said Coun. Lisa Muri. With myriad developments in various phases of completion, residents need a respite from what can be a very stressful process, according to Muri. “The days of continuing to battle development applications needed to come to an end,” she said. “We’re just very cognizant of piling too many projects on at once.”

True confessions A

pparently it’s true confession time in the B.C. legislature these days. Hands up all those politicians who took a vacation with their family on the public dime that they’d like to come clean about. For all the talk about transparency, accountability and cautionary tales of politicians who were less than forthcoming about what they billed to the public, there’s a lot of ink still being spilled on the topic. The most recent example is Speaker Linda Reid, who took her husband to a commonwealth conference in South Africa at taxpayers’ expense, where they were photographed doing important government work like petting lions and giraffes. Isn’t it amazing that work so integral to democracy never gets scheduled in Winnipeg in January?

Not to be outdone, deputy speaker Ray Chouchan was soon making his own confession to taking his wife on the same junket, adding Reid had told him the expense was okay. Expense confessions have proved a remarkably bipartisan activity. There are regulations governing what kind of travel politicians can bill. But the regulations are lax and the loopholes so large a 747 can be — and frequently is — flown through them. Politicians who have taken advantage of the rules know it is wrong. But they have come to consider it a perk of the job and adopted a “buy now, pay when caught” mentality. It’s time the rules were tightened. But don’t hold your breath. Leaving it to the collective conscience and moral judgment of those we elect has so far proved remarkably ineffective.

Advancing age demands close allies Forget politics. (Oh, gladly?)Talk about life where we live it: If your mate dies before you, which is about even odds in this town of the whitehaired old, would you remarry? I pause to quote, not for the first time, G.B. Shaw’s witty remark that a second marriage is “the triumph of hope over experience.” Moving on, I lied up in paragraph one: Families are society’s bricks and mortar, far more political than the transient goings-on and scandals in legislatures. The politics of family, marriage, children, death — right down to the misremembered memories, and the gossip of distant cousins — are the most political things on earth. And the most intimate. Thus, like all intimacies, universal. So at a certain age, if not earlier, do Alice and

Trevor Lautens

This Just In

Harry talk about what they’ll do if one of them shuffles off this mortal coil before the other? Often. Or so I suspect. Those who don’t, simply think about it more. They are gripped by a kind of neo-Victorian horror at the tastelessness of discussing the subject. Others find it more fascinating than curling on television. “I could never marry

CONTACTUS

anyone else,” Alice, 35 years with one husband, proclaims. Harry is reassured, or maybe not. The habit of marriage is extremely habitual, you might say. One can miss it. (And forget our society’s hugely over-reported matter of sex. No volcano is as extinct as old married sex.) If Alice is happy with one marriage, why wouldn’t she be happy with another? Why shouldn’t she be, and deservedly? Advancing age invites, demands, even pleads for, a close ally. Children may be distant, or too burdened themselves. No less a personage than former top B.C. cabinet minister Pat McGeer told me that his Aunt Ada advised him, “Old age isn’t for sissies.” Aunt Ada must have got around, because since then I’ve heard it from many others. Anyway, Harry makes

no such proclamation himself, or may lie through his clacking false teeth. He lightly fantasizes, assuming Alice’s demise and after a proper mourning period, about connecting with single women he knows, unmarried or widows, even about the attractive wives of men friends if they had the misfortune of reaching the same state of lonely availability. One has to acknowledge human needs. Male needs, especially.Widows are famously more adaptable than widowers, and statistically live longer. Better cooking only partly responsible. I’m not sure if the above is ponderously heavy going, or too glib. It’s no accident that there are more jokes concerning marriage and death than about a Catholic priest, a rabbi and a Protestant minister going

into a bar. The serious fact is that death, approaching or accomplished, can heighten family tensions, sharpen tooth and claw, or raise questions about, or by, faithful caregivers or late-inthe-day live-ins who become closer (and more helpful) to the departed than any relative. You know this. Now, the reason this column has insisted on being written while Great Events (not!) are ignored. It is a truth universally acknowledged that a person walking a dog has no lack of casual, and especially warm and kind, conversations, not all with other dog-walkers. I suspect the role of the dog as matchmaker might rival any professional operation in connecting mate-seeking (or lunch-lonely) males and females. If West Vancouver, with its high ratio of

snow-coloured heads, is Lonelyville for many, a dog is the best, most loving and least quarrelsome companion on earth. It’s depressing that many condos and landlords forbid them. Cats? Fine. A woman told me with utter sincerity that after her husband died, a cat they had got only months before his death “saved my life.” And not in a fire or whatever, of course, but in a healing, metaphysical sense. You see many old people walking alone on Ambleside Beach’s dog walk, one of West Van’s priceless glories. You can never tell about faces. A sombre and withdrawn face can mask inner ease and a special spirit given exclusively to the old. She who walks alone is not necessarily lonely. But for those who are: Consider a dog. Or a cat. Fortunes of B.C. tied to resource job sector So is the B.C. economy driven by the natural resource sector or not? You’ll be hearing conflicting answers to that question in the months and years ahead as debate swirls on whether to build various mega-projects, but the issue goes to the heart of where B.C.’s economy is headed. Last week, two groups released what appeared to be contradictory reports on the importance of the energy industry to B.C.’s overall economic health. A closer look, however, shows there may be more common ground between the two views than first thought. One group, called the Conversations for Responsible Economic Development (CRED), published a study that questions the premise that B.C. is a resource-based province. Using a variety of government statistics, it makes the case that three quarters of our economic activity is, in fact, derived from the service industry. On the other hand, CRED argues just 11 per cent of the province’s gross domestic product comes from the energy sector. The organization, whose philosophy seems to tilt toward greenish, small

Keith Baldrey

View from the Ledge

business-oriented values, is trying to make the point that industries like mining, forestry and energy are dwarfed by real estate, retail and various service industries when it comes to having an impact on the economy. Another organization, calling itself “British Columbians for Prosperity” put out its own report that claims building those two pipelines from Alberta’s oil sands — the Northern Gateway and Kinder Morgan pipelines — would create almost 10,000 jobs and generate more than $11 billion in economic activity. Two reports, two completely different takes on a key part of our economy. So who’s correct? Well, both perhaps.

The common link here is the construction industry. Both CRED and the Prosperity group agree the construction industry plays a vital role in building B.C.’s economy. What the CRED report does not do is link construction jobs to the huge economic spinoffs associated with various energy projects on the drawing board. For example, BC Hydro estimates a staggering 33,000 jobs would be created in the construction and development phase of the Site C dam project, as it makes its case for the megaproject to go ahead. The B.C. government estimates that if five liquified natural gas plants are built in the northwest (an admittedly ambitious and perhaps unrealistic plan) that 39,000 construction jobs would be created.Throw in those pipeline job estimates, and we could be looking at a whopping 80,000 new construction jobs being created over the next decade. Those estimates could be much too high. But even if half those jobs come to fruition, they will have a substantial impact on B.C.’s economy, not least because they will all be well-paying jobs that create a lot of economic activity.

And we should hope at least some of those jobs do indeed materialize. If they don’t, a lot of young people are going to find themselves stuck in dead-end jobs (like many in the service sector) that don’t pay much and

make living in an expensive area like Metro Vancouver almost impossible. British Columbia appears headed to a crossroads. Job creation has been stagnant in this province for several years now, despite the B.C. Liberal

government’s lofty B.C. Jobs Plan. While we may not presently be as reliant on the natural resource sector as is commonly perceived, it may be in our economic selfSee Kwan page 10

Centenarian a celebrated volunteer WestVan 101-year-old has lent a hand throughout his long life ANNE WATSON awatson@nsnews.com

Volunteering has been a continuous thread through the fabric of Fred Titcomb’s life. And that’s saying something, because Titcomb — who turns 102 on April 17 — has been logging volunteer hours longer than most people have been alive. Titcomb is the recipient of a 2014 B.C. Community Achievement Award for his 35-year dedication as a volunteer at the West Vancouver Seniors’ Activity Centre. “It’s wonderful because I’ve had lots of different awards (including the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee medal) but this one is pretty special,” said Titcomb. But the past three and a half decades of volunteering at the centre are only a small part of Titcomb’s story. He credits his mother — a “fantastic volunteer” — with sparking his interest in helping out. “I just picked up from

her because I seem to have been doing something like that all my life.” Titcomb was born in Moose Jaw, Sask., two days after the sinking of the Titanic. He came to Vancouver in 1933, “right in the middle of the Depression.” He met his wife Ada and they began courting during the construction of the Lions Gate Bridge. They married and moved into a house on Duchess Avenue in West Vancouver around 1939. “When we came and moved into West Vancouver, I immediately joined the volunteer fire department and was on the fire department for I guess 17 years, which at that time was mostly volunteers,” said Titcomb. The couple opened a craft store called Hobbyland on Marine Drive and Titcomb continued his volunteer activities, including 10 years as a director at theYMCA. Titcomb said he was the first one in the door to the seniors activity centre when

it opened in 1981. “I immediately came and joined,” he said. “I got involved in everything and it became almost like a full-time job coming here sometimes. It would fill a book for the number of things that I really did.” Titcomb helped raise donations for the cafeteria, learning the “simple things about a computer” so he could take in all the cheques and type up the receipts and thank you notes. He did the same during fundraising for the Marine Room. Titcomb was chairman at the centre from 1984 to 1986, but his regular job since joining was always taking care of the statistics, recording how many people use the building and how many people do drop-ins. “I love to do stats and it’s all part of my life and I guess why I’m still around,” he said. Titcomb works at the seniors centre mornings now, five days a week. “I stay away Saturday and Sunday because I think you have to have at least a little time away, but you know that’s the most miserable time,” he said. “Saturdays and Sundays I don’t particularly like,

The couple were married for 55 years, had two sons, four grandchildren and four great grandchildren. Titcomb said his wife

was a fantastic flower maker, crafting them out of wood fibre. “She was very, very good at crafts,” he said. “(For) two or three years, she made all the artificial flowers for the May Day floats.” Titcomb said building floats and making decorations for the seniors centre was one thing that

Now the MLA — known for castigating the government for not doing enough to combat poverty — has had to dip into her own pocket and pay back almost $35,000 to the Portland Hotel Society for spending incurred by her estranged husband and herself on several trips. Obesity rates still a key health concern Health minister points to issue as ‘everyone’s problem’

ANNE WATSON awatson@nsnews.com

The unmistakable smells of bacon and sausage, along with various delectable pastries, were an ironic backdrop to a speech about health concerns delivered by federal Health Minister Rona Ambrose March 21 at the Hollyburn Country Club in West Vancouver. The breakfast speech, hosted by the West Vancouver Chamber of Commerce, addressed the government’s continuing action on various health concerns. Ambrose said amongst those concerns are the needs of an aging population, the impact of chronic conditions on health care and whether new technologies are

actually increasing costs but not quality of care. But she added inactivity and obesity rates remain key concerns. “The burden of illness on Canadian families that results from being inactive, this is one of the most challenging issues that face our health-care system,” said Ambrose. “The rates of inactivity in Canada continue to be quite high.” Ambrose said recent data shows only five per cent of children and youth are physically active enough to meet Canadian guidelines. “A lot of parents are shocked to hear that because their kids, they think, are fairly active,” she said, adding that only 13 per cent of adult women and 17 per cent of adult men currently meet physical activity guidelines. “Because inactivity is a risk factor for obesity and chronic disease, these data point to what is a very disturbing reality.” Currently one in every three Canadian children and youth are overweight or obese, said Ambrose. “This represents a more than doubling of obesity among Canadian children

and youth in the past 25 years,” she said. “For Canadian adults, two thirds of adult men and over half of adult women are overweight or obese now.” She said obesity rates are higher among aboriginal people. Ambrose said if left unchecked, the impacts of obesity would continue to grow with irreversible consequences. “This is a dire situation that we’re facing in the health-care system.” Reducing obesity is everyone’s problem and is a complex issue, she said. She said all segments of society must work together to deal with obesity. John Weston, MP for West Vancouver Sea-toSky Country, reinforced Ambrose’s message about the need for collaboration to conquer health issues, as well as the need for “Canadians to take the lead. “It’s not government that can do these things, government can orchestrate and encourage and espouse ideals,” said Weston. “But ultimately it’s up to us as Canadians to do these things.”

Billy Bishop,Yuri Gagarin, Marcus Aurelias and Thomas Jefferson. These impressive figures are among those who served as inspiration for another impressive figure in his own right, Chris Hadfield. “I learned a lot from my parents and immediate influences around me, and then I idolized certain people, you know the heroic figures,” explains the retired Canadian astronaut, adding the list changed over the years to suit different phases

of his life. “Initially Batman was pretty inspiring,” he says with a laugh. Speaking to the North Shore News from a hotel in Calgary recently, Hadfield is happy to be an inspiration to space enthusiasts and budding astronauts across the country, but is not comfortable with any hero worship. “I’ve learned that everybody has performed acts of heroism, they just haven’t announced them. And everybody you meet knows things that you don’t know. Everybody. So it doesn’t have to be grandiose and one time. There’s something to learn and to admire in pretty much everybody you meet.” A former Canadian military pilot who went on to work with NASA, Hadfield gained popularity via social media on his last

trip into space. In the spring of 2013, Hadfield was on a long-stay mission to the International Space Station (his third trip into space), when he became the station commander. He shared his experience there with millions of followers on Twitter, and also reached out on Facebook and Tumblr. From his perch high above the Earth, he answered questions from fans and demonstrated how things work in space, such as how astronauts pee or sleep on the station, and what happens to their tears when they cry. These days, although he is retired from the astronaut business, Hadfield is still busy sharing his experience with audiences all over the world. He receives thousands of requests to attend various events, and says he is trying to speak to ●

as many people as possible. “It’s been just such an amazing sequence of experiences that has gotten me to this point,” he notes. Over his decadeslong career, Hadfield has spoken many times to schools across the country, has written articles for various publications and been involved in designing curriculum. So this latest bout of public speaking is all part of the same long continuum of sharing lessons learned from his training and explaining why the missions mattered. “(It) is trying to push back the edge of human capability of exploration, understanding, and always with the most important objective of trying to see how does this matter, how does this apply, where is the utility and the interest and the skills that it brings to everybody?”

STAN DOUGLAS _<j7 kM

Last year, Hadfield released a book called An Astronaut’s Guide to Life on Earth. It chronicles his journey from being a kid on a farm in southern Ontario, being inspired to become an astronaut after watching the Apollo moon landing, and reaching his goal of going into space. Along the way, he highlights life lessons he learned. The book is chock-full of interesting anecdotes and good advice. When asked if he ever felt discouraged that he might not reach his goal of going into space and getting where he wanted to be, his answer is simple, yet profound: “I was almost always where I wanted to be.” He explains that he always kept the long-term goal in mind, but then constantly pursued things See Farm page 20

FILM

Pals collaborate on 3 Days in Havana Character cuts conference to explore the ‘real’ Cuba JULIE CRAWFORD ContributingWriter

If you thought being the parent of a teenager was hard, try being the director-dad who has to tell his 14-year-old daughter that her scenes in his movie are on the cutting-room floor. “It was by no means a reflection on what she did, she’s super-talented,” says Vancouver native Gil Bellows, co-director and star of 3 Days in Havana, which opens across Canada today. “It’ll never be harder than that.” The film was a familyand-friends affair from the beginning. When Bellows got his first real acting gig on a National Film Board project alongside fellow fledgling actor Tony Pantages, the pair made a pledge that they’d find a way to work together; little did they know it would happen 25 years later. A lot happened in between: Bellows had a breakout role in The Shawshank Redemption, was Ally’s forever love — Billy Thomas — on

TV’s Ally McBeal, starred in another several dozen film and TV projects, and won an Emmy as executive producer on HBO’s Temple Grandin. Pantages left acting and became a successful music video producer. It was after the success of Temple Grandin that an “angel investor” helped grant Bellows the freedom to plan his next project. The result is 3 Days In Havana, about a businessman named Jack Petty who blows off his insurance conference to see the “real” Havana, thanks to a beautiful woman in an airport bar and travel writer Harry Smith, his hedonistic new BFF. The hijinks turn dark after a case of mistaken identity, and Jack finds himself on the run. The film stars Greg Wise (Sense and Sensibility), Phyllida Law, Christopher Heyerdahl and Rya Kihlstedt (Dexter, Home Alone 3), Bellows’ wife offscreen. Englishman Greg Wise and Bellows are

friendship intact thanks to a “shorthand” that offset a lot of challenges. Plus, while he was interested in directing, Bellows “didn’t want to be the guy in a scene then yelling cut and breaking down other actors’ performances.” This is especially true when those other actors include your spouse: “I do think there were moments when Rya wanted to take a bat to me,” he laughs. “At the same time I will say it’s great to have a partner who’s also an artist, and has an appreciation of what it’s like to step outside of that comfort zone.” Filmmakers had three days to scout locations in Havana, a few more to lock in the sites, and then one day of casting that typically took place in a courtyard. Kihlstedt and Bellows’ daughter and son were on location with them. “It was a whirlwind,

incredible,” says Bellows of the process. The shoot itself was a marriage of structure and spontaneity, a well-planned shooting day with a dose of filmingon-the-fly that Bellows endorses: “I think it’s necessary for some of the magic and energy you see in films.” He says he’s not hooked on cigars after enjoying them onscreen, but Bellows admits a good cigar is an added bonus to making a movie in paradise. “There is something great about having one on the terrace in Havana after a long day of shooting, watching the sunset, the waves against the Malecon, people with their sun-kissed faces . . . the women looking dynamite. A cigar at that point is pretty damn good.” The actor has played his share of cops, agents and assorted do-gooders, though his sympathetic bad guy in Love And A

.45 with Renee Zellweger is still a fan favourite. Speaking of good guys: with the resurrection of Ally McBeal in boxed sets and Netflix, does he still get Billy fanmail? “Yes I do. Part of doing this job is that over the span of your life you get to be involved in projects that mean something to people out there, and it’s fantastic.” “You have to write your own story” is a line from the film as well as a credo in which Bellows believes, and which came in handy when breaking that bad news to his actor daughter. “Do what you love, but create your own work. Then you’re not vulnerable to other people determining your future, absolutely.” 3 Days In Havana opens today at Cineplex International Village in Vancouver. Select cast members will be at premiere screenings for a Q&A session before the film.

evolutionary manner it was more a matter of OK, that’s where I’d like my life to head and if everything went perfectly then eventually I’ll walk on the moon. But it’s probably not going to go perfectly so meanwhile what am I going to do and what’s interesting and what challenges me,” he explains. “And all of those things were fascinating and interesting and challenging and fun and luckily enough the opportunity arose that they also led to being selected as a Canadian Space Agency astronaut.” It’s a matter of how you define success and how you define getting to where you want to be, he adds. He says he’s puzzled by people who say they’re bored because he believes there is always something interesting to do and always something new to learn. “I was raised on a farm and so I think I learned a long time ago the benefit of work. Not just that you get stuff done, which is good in itself, but that there’s great pleasure in getting stuff done and being able to look back at the end of the day and see that you accomplished something,” he explains. “There’s a contentment and a steadily increasing sense of self-worth that comes from doing useful work, so it’s sort of internally contagious.” Next week, Hadfield will visit North Vancouver for a special presentation at Centennial Theatre. “I called the talk that I’m going to give The Sky is Not the Limit because I hear all the time, ‘The sky’s the limit.’ I lived half a year above the sky. The sky is not the limit.”

Dresses, floral prints and the trusty old blue jean are all trending in this year’s spring fashion. Deb Nichol, owner of The Latest Scoop, a popup store in West Vancouver that opened earlier this month, says blue jeans and waistlines are making a rise again. “Denim is an interesting thing because we’ve had coloured denims and textured denims for quite a while, so really you’re starting to see the return of the pure denim meaning the blue denim,” says Nichol. “You’re starting to see a little bit of a higher waist, there’s still everything available from mid-rise to high-rise but you’re just starting to see people go back into the denim, with like a little bit of a higher waist and maybe different washes in it.” The bohemian look, a summer favourite, is also trending for spring but Nichol says it’s “a little bit prettier,” with A-line skirts with chiffon above the hemline. “It’s quite pretty and quite ladylike,” she says, adding that colours are more neutral. Nichol, a West Vancouver resident, has made following the latest trends in fashion a constant work in progress. She opens Scoop twice a year in both its West Vancouver and South Granville

locations, buying clothing, accessories, housewares and furniture months after other retailers have already ordered to get the most current looks. Nichol started Scoop in 2004 after working more than 25 years in retail. “When I sold my business on Robson Street years ago, I wanted to go back into retail but I wanted to create something that was completely unique to what anybody else was doing, and really more honestly to suit what I wanted to do,” says Nichol. “I didn’t want to have the same old retail rules that apply to most other retailers.” Nichol says that’s when she decided to start her own pop-up store, capitalizing on both her experience in retail and what she knew were the most productive months. “Retail rents are normally quite high and often it’s the months that don’t produce that chew up the profits for the months that do,” she says. “So I decided that I would only open up on what we call the ‘happy months’ — March, April, May, June.” To stay on top of the trends, Nichol, 56, and her buyer, Caroline Forsyth, 26, travel to Los Angeles twice a month as well as New York and other parts of the world. “I see the influence from TV and movies and See Popular page 23

Popular restaurants, stores provide insight on fashion From page 21 magazines and people,” she says. “When we’re in L.A. and New York, we spend a lot of time in the more popular restaurants and stores and look at what people are wearing.” Nichol says they both understand fashion, what’s a trend and what style people will want. “We just kind of collect the information as the years go along but it’s just something that we love to do,” she says. “We get both ends of the spectrum because we don’t believe its really about age, fashion is really about attitudes and what you’re comfortable wearing.”

Nichol says about 99 per cent of their buying is done in Los Angeles and New York, but they do buy from Canada as well.

Images recall Vancouver’s seedy past

Exhibit marks Douglas’s first foray into abstracts JEREMY SHEPHERD jshepherd@nsnews.com

Film noir is a kingdom of corruption. There are cops on the take and dames who’ll take all they’ve got. There are box men, wheel men, fall guys, bar flies, stool pigeons, grifters, drifters, thugs, lugs, pugs and reporters. That world of rainslicked city streets and lonely figures smoking

cigarettes under lampposts is recalled in Stan Douglas: Synthetic Pictures. The exhibition, currently showing at Presentation House Gallery, includes a series of black and white photographs that tie to Vancouver’s own seedy history. The most jaw dropping of Douglas’ works is Hogan’s Alley. The photo illustration gives the viewer a big, black-and-white look at

ramshackle shelters and small houses. You can see details like rotten boards and the way the light spills out of a window and onto the rust eating away at a corrugated tin roof. But there’s something else about the picture. Looking about the gallery, exhibit curator Helga Pakasaar hesitates to describe it. “It’s truly realistic,” she says. “And yet . . .” She doesn’t finish her thought, as though the picture has some quality that lies beyond description. The work was inspired

by photos of the mixed race neighbourhood that was destined for destruction in 1972 to make way for the Georgia Viaduct. The perspective is both wide and deep. Pakasaar compares the viewer’s vantage point to what a movie director can see from atop a crane. “It’s like you’re going to swoop into something,” she says. The photo realism and depth of perspective is startling. “He could never have captured that in a photograph. The lens limits what it sees, this is lens-

less,” Pakasaar says. The history of film noir is littered with bits of concrete poetry like: “He hasn’t got enough blood left in him to keep a chicken alive,” or, “I’d hate to take a bite out of you. You’re a cookie full of arsenic.” But aside from pulp fiction and chiaroscuro lighting, the genre may owe its greatest debt to Weegee. Also known as Arthur Fellig, Weegee was a freelance photographer who worked the graveyard shift, using flash bulbs to illuminate New York’s night in the 1930s, ‘40s, and ‘50s.

With a darkroom in his trunk and a police radio by the dashboard, Weegee caught violence and death in 1/200th of a second. Those crime photos are also recalled in Douglas’ collection. Suspect shows one man flanked by what we assume are two overworked detectives. The camera’s flash casts each dent and divot in their faces in stark relief. With his arms crossed, the suspect seems to be staring right at you, but his eyes are hidden behind sunglasses. See Corrupt page 32

MUSIC

Dawson unveils stripped-down sound Canadian musician has set up home in Nashville n Steve Dawson at St. James’s Hall, 3214 W. 10th Ave.,Vancouver, Sunday, Mar. 30 at 8 p.m. (doors open at 7 p.m.).Tickets: $24/$20 at Highlife Records, Rufus’ Guitars or roguefolk.bc.ca. NIALL SHANNON nshannon@nsnews.com

Bluesman and guitar virtuoso Steve Dawson is coming to town, on the wake of his new album, which celebrates the legacy of some of his musical heroes. Dawson lived in West Vancouver for the first 10 years of his life before moving to Toronto with his family for four years. It was on his return to Vancouver that he fell in love with the music he still plays to this day, listening to his friend’s music and connecting with the music scene in Vancouver in the ’80s. “I had kept in touch with a lot of my friends from West Vancouver and they were the ones who got really into music,” says Dawson. “So when I moved back in ’86 to Vancouver, I had one friend in particular, him and I had a band going really shortly after I moved back to Vancouver.” From that point forward, Dawson started to meet

others playing music, jamming together and playing in bars, despite being teenagers. “I don’t know if you could get away with that anymore, but that’s what we did back then.” Currently, Dawson is on tour to promote his new album, Rattlesnake Cage. The album reflects Dawson’s love for the simple beauty of the stripped-down, bare-bones skill of the forefathers of blues music. To echo this tradition, Dawson is accompanied in studio by only a few of his favourite guitars, a venerable microphone found in a Detroit church and nothing else. “I wanted to record it in a really old fashioned way where the technology I used was nothing more than what they would’ve had back in the ’50s. So I wanted to approach (Rattlesnake Cage) like that,” says Dawson. His appreciation for the legends of old is found directly in several tracks, with tunes such as “The Medicine Show Comes to Avalon” as a tip of the hat to Mississippi John Hurt, who used to play for a medicine show that came through his hometown of Avalon. Another is “The Altar at Center Raven,” about

He was a preacher but I know him as a guitar player. I wanted to incorporate those influences but keep it original and modern at the same time,” says Dawson. Besides playing, Dawson also enjoys producing, and has won Juno Awards for both — two for playing, and

five for producing. “I’d like to think that there is some sort of happy medium of splitting the two things up, so I don’t have to abandon one.” Dawson says he still loves to play live, but that as he gets older, “the complications of being on the road tire me out more than when I was 18 or 19,” he says. “It’s hard to present the kind of music that you want to, and get around easily, as everything is really expensive these days.Travel

is so hard, getting your instruments on airplanes, and just things like that, that make it frustrating for being on tour.” Producing allows Dawson to make a record in the comfort of his home, which is now the storied music town of Nashville, Tenn. Having moved only months ago, the city’s musical legacy is of great appeal to the veteran musician. “I love (Nashville). It’s a pretty action-packed town . . .There’s all kinds of music

going on, a lot of recording, lot of live music . . . It’s kind of a melting pot right now . . . with (White Stripes frontman) Jack White moving to town, that sort of changed the landscape for the whole place a little bit.” After the tour, Dawson will be working on several projects in Nashville. He plans to travel back to Canada and hopes to keep on working with Canadian artists after years in the industry. “So that’s my plan, to keep that Canadian connection going strong.”

Corrupt File picture series adds colour to exhibition From page 28 Intrigue is a pair of women’s shoes reflected in a flawless background, almost like they were sitting on a lake of oil. Burlap appears to show a body beneath a cover, but when you look a little closer, you begin to notice the proportions of the background don’t make sense. “It unravels into something kind of curious or mysterious,” Pakasaar says. One of Douglas’ most striking pictures is Cache. NORGATE CENTRE 1451 Marine Drive, North Vancouver • 604-904-7811

A square section of wall has been taken off, and inside we can see a pile of goodies including cash, cards, dominoes, dice, poker chips and London Dry Gin. There’s a single hand in the frame holding one-third of a cigar and pointing at the cheap treasures with a stubby index finger. Pakasaar suggests the picture may have been inspired by the lore of The Penthouse. In his book Liquor, Lust, and the Law:The Story of Vancouver’s Legendary Penthouse Nightclub, heir

to the VIP room Danny Filippone recounts finding a similar hidden spot. Fittingly enough, that cache was a pile of classic pictures. The colour in the gallery is supplied by Douglas’ Corrupt File, a series of big pictures that look like rainbow bar codes. The pictures each have a four-digit combination for a title. “These are not abstractions at all,” Pakasaar says of the photos. “They’re actually concrete evidence of this process of translation.”

The BMW 3 Series is a brilliant car — it has always been a great vehicle and as a result, the 3 Series is BMW’s best selling car accounting for about a third of the brand’s total sales. The 3 Series is now in its sixth generation and is available in four different body styles for 2014. One previously popular body style, a coupe, is notably missing in this current

generation because BMW has decided to designate those models as the 4 Series. Yes 3 Series is for sedan, the 4 Series for the coupe — in a similar manner to how Audi names its models as A4/A5 and S4/S5. While the new 4 Series may lack the brand equity of a 3 Series badge, it does gain the exclusivity of being a new model with a fresh name and styling.

and the new 3 Series sedan. The only exterior paneling the 4 Series shares with its smaller sibling is the hood. The nose is more aggressive and the signature BMW double-kidney grille is smaller. The lower grille has also been redesigned to improve airflow around the front wheels. Side vents behind the front wheels also help to reduce drag. See New page 42

Design The new 4 Series is not all-new as it is still based on the 3 Series platform. It has the same engine and transmission options and has a similar looking interior but with an added “passion” inside and out. In particular, BMW has changed the exterior quite a bit to provide it that special design feel. The 4 Series is wider, lower and longer than both the old 3 Series coupe

TODAY’S DRIVE

New coupe more agile than 3 Series From page 41

Ignoring the side mirrors, the widest part of the car is between the rear wheel arches. They’re more prominent than on a 3 Series to give the 4 Series a more muscular stance. The trunk lid is also sculpted to act as a spoiler, making a larger, gaudy one unnecessary. As mentioned, the differences are less noticeable inside as they’re limited to just unique trim choices. But that’s not a bad thing as the 3 Series cabin is already sufficiently luxurious and sporty. Performance On the road the 4 Series is a great car to drive from so many different perspectives. You sit nice and low so you feel suitably sporty. The seats are supportive and surprisingly comfortable. The electronic steering is accurate and sharp, but light enough to not be a burden when you are just cruising around town. It does lack a bit of road feel but we

understand how difficult it is to provide that tactile feel in an electric steering mechanism. Driving the two cars back-to-back, the 4 Series feels slightly more agile than a 3 Series sedan. This is because the 4 Series has a lower and wider stance and a sportier suspension setting. It’s not a huge leap, but that’s understandable as the 3 Series is already a great handling car to begin with. The standard 4 Series is rear-wheel drive, but is available with BMW’s xDrive intelligent all-wheel drive system. Power won’t be an issue as the 435i comes with a turbocharged 3.0-litre straight-six producing 300 horsepower and 300 foot-pounds of torque. It will propel the car to 100 kilometres per hour in 5.3 seconds. If that’s not fast enough for you, soon there will be an M version. This will bump the horsepower to 425 and should go from See Car page 45

TODAY’S DRIVE

Car hands you a seatbelt From page 42 zero to 100km/h in a just a little more than four seconds. The economical choice though is the 428i with its turbocharged 2.0-litre inline-four making 241 h.p. and 258 foot-pounds of torque. It is still quick, 0-100 km/h in 6.0 seconds, but it should also return fuel efficiency numbers of 5.4 litres/100 kilometres for highway driving. A six-speed manual transmission is standard. The optional eight-speed Sports automatic allows the driver to shift gears manually using steering wheel mounted paddles. The optional adaptive dampers make the 4 Series feel more adaptable to your taste and needs. In Sport mode, the suspension is suitably firm, while in Comfort the ride is supple. Environment In terms of build quality, the new 4 Series is on par with the 3 Series, which is to say, excellent, as the 3 Series has long been recognized as

an industry leader. Climbing into a 4 Series, the first feature you will notice that you won’t find in a 3 Series is the automatic seatbelt extender. This hands the seatbelts to the front passengers as soon as the key has been inserted and the doors are closed. I find it a bit cumbersome but it may be necessary in a car with long doors. In the back seat, the 4 Series isn’t too bad compared to some of its rivals. Legroom is acceptable, however headroom is limited due to its sloping roofline. In-car storage is good for a car in this class. Compartments in the doors, with space for a one-litre bottle, and in the lid of the centre consol help you securely carry all of your necessities. The 4 Series also has an optional hands-free trunk opening system. With the Comfort Access system, a quick foot movement under the rear bumper triggers the sensor and opens the lid. The trunk itself is almost the same size as a 3 Series.

The rear seats also fold down if you need more space. Features The 4 Series Coupe has a starting price of $44,900. A 4 Series Gran Coupe will be available later in the year. Standard equipment includes automatic climate control, heated front seats, dynamic cruise control, start/stop system, brake energy regeneration system, SeeWill page 46

Bi-Xenon headlights, and a glass sunroof. Additional features, available as options or on higher trims, include blind spot detection, lane departure and collision warning, navigation, realtime traffic information, rearview camera, park assist, Internet, and a heated steering wheel. Fuel efficiency numbers (litres/100 kilometres) for the base 428i with the automatic transmission are 8.7 city, 5.4 highway for 7.2 combined.

Thumbs up The 4 Series is silky smooth, sporty and provides a true BMW feel.

Thumbs down Saying 4 Series sounds odd and probably will for some time. Was it necessary for BMW to rebrand the coupe model? The steering lacks some feedback from the road.

The bottom line The 4 Series manages to build upon the strengths of the 3 Series, offering speed and refinement that satisfy, while allowing BMW to make the coupe seem more special to its buyers.

Competitors Audi A5 Not only is the A5 a beautiful car, but it’s also a joy to drive. Add in the excellent fuel economy and you can forget about the cramped back seat. The A5 is available in three models, with a cabriolet version of each, and starts at $44,100. Mercedes-Benz C-Class Coupe The C-Class is a safe, reliable and luxurious car respected for excellence. While not as performance focused as some of its rivals, it offers a compliant ride that’s more in keeping with traditional luxury vehicles. The C-Class Coupe comes in four flavours and has a starting price of $44,750. Infiniti Q60 Coupe The Q60 was formerly known as the G37 but continues to be an alternative to either a dedicated sports car or a luxury sedan. The Q60 has the performance edge over its rivals but it’s not as fuelefficient or as refined. The Q60 can be purchased in either RWD or AWD trims and starts at $46,800.
