Bear shot, senior stitched in Delbrook run-in Bear in kitchen fridge startles N.Van woman BRENT RICHTER brichter@nsnews.com
A 93-year-old Delbrook woman has been stitched up and a 190-kilogram bear has been shot after the two had an unexpected run-in Tuesday afternoon. The adult male bear apparently let himself in through the open back door of the home on the 600-block of St. Ives Crescent and began rummaging through the fridge. The woman noticed the fridge open and put her hand on
the door to close it, not knowing what was on the other side. The startled bear put his paw over her hand. In her own shock, the woman pulled her hand away causing a gash that required stitches to close. “We’re fortunate she only received those injuries. That bear could have caused some serious or fatal injuries,” said Sgt. Todd Hunter, conservation officer. After fleeing the scene, the bear lingered in the area close to the woman’s home and conservation officers caught up with it in a nearby ravine where they tranquilized it and removed it from the area. An examination of the bear’s scat confirmed it had been habituated to surviving on garbage, Hunter said. See Bear-related page 5
Six-figure salaries on the rise at city hall ANNE WATSON awatson@nsnews.com
The number of municipal employees earning a six-figure salary almost doubled in two North Shore municipalities last year and decreased in another. According to recently released 2013 financial statements, the number of District of West Vancouver employees earning a six-figure salary increased from around 66 in 2012 to approximately 104 in 2013, and the City of North Vancouver saw a rise in sixfigure incomes from 35 in 2012
to around 71 in 2013. While the number of employees earning $100,000plus salaries in the District of North Vancouver decreased in 2013, the number of people who received $200,000 or more in annual salary doubled. Jeff McDonald, communications director for the District of West Vancouver, said some of the increase is attributable to staff who only worked part of the year in 2012 and did not earn their full salaries, so they appear on the 2013 list. Gov’t grants boost bike routes $500K from province for new bike lanes, paths BRENT RICHTER brichter@nsnews.com
Traversing some of the North Shore’s busiest roads by bicycle is about to get a bit easier as the province has chipped in almost $500,000 for bike lane and multi-use path projects in the City and District of NorthVancouver. The largest single grant in the announcement is $240,000 for a multi-use pathway along Mount Seymour Parkway from Lillooet Road to Seymour Boulevard. Once complete, the paths will link up with existing bike routes to the east and west as well as the Seymour River Greenway trail and connections to Phibbs Exchange and Ironworkers Memorial Second Narrows Crossing, now undergoing heavy refurbishment to add wider sidewalks. District taxpayers are on the hook for another $240,000 to complete
the project. Lynn Valley Road will be getting marked bike lanes between William Avenue and Highway 1 with an aim to providing better connections to the Lynn Valley town centre. The province’s $100,000 grant will help offset the $316,994 cost of the project, which the city is also working on. The city meanwhile will be getting $100,000 towards its project to build a 2.5-metre wide, multi-use asphalt path at sidewalk level on the south side of Third Street between Forbes Avenue and West 2nd as well as 1.5-metrewide bike lane on the north side. The roadway will see curbs relocated, lane widths adjusted and the entire roadway paved, with a total budget of $790,000. The announcements are welcomed by cycling advocacy group HUB. The speed of cars on Mount Seymour Parkway makes cycling there for

A 27-year-old North Vancouver man has been arrested after a woman found a camera phone recording her while using a public washroom in Whistler’s Carleton Lodge. The woman entered the stall after leaving a nearby bar at around 1 a.m. on Sunday, July 20 and noticed the phone’s illuminated screen and red light indicating the camera was recording. The phone was placed in a vent located above the toilet and had been recording for approximately three minutes, the Vancouver woman said. Police tracked down the suspect at a Whistler hotel, where he was arrested for voyeurism and held for court. “I’m so bothered by what happened,” said the woman, who spoke on condition of anonymity. A regular weekend visitor to Whistler, the woman said the incident would not keep her from returning to the resort. “It’s so creepy and traumatizing knowing that someone would go out of their way to do this. I don’t know what happened in (the suspect’s) life that was so bad that this is the path he chose,” she added With the help of a friend, the woman was able to retrieve the phone and said she texted the suspect’s family to notify them of the incident before turning the phone over to police. The woman also posted about the incident under a pseudonym on the popular Whistler Buy and Sell Facebook forum to alert the community. “Women should be aware of their surroundings and look for things that don’t seem right and report them,” she said, adding she is now planning to take a selfdefence course. “I don’t feel safe,” she said, adding she didn’t know when she found the phone if the person responsible was still in the washroom. The suspect was seen in security footage attempting to place the phone in the ceiling fixture for more than 30 minutes, occasionally running to and from the men’s and women’s

Drugge said. “That multi-use path is going to be extremely well used and appreciated by both pedestrians and cyclists.” The improvements will help encourage people of all ages and abilities to spend more time on bikes and less in cars, Drugge said. Also on the to-do list for cycling infrastructure is safety improvements along
the Stanley Park causeway where a North Vancouver woman was killed in 2013. After doing surveying for the work in February, the province and Vancouver Park Board and city staff have being working on design options. The province plans to make its plans public this fall and collect public feedback before starting construction in 2015.
Boat capsizes near Quay JANE SEYD jseyd@nsnews.com
Five people — including two who couldn’t swim — were plucked from Burrard Inlet Friday night by NorthVancouver’s Royal Canadian Marine Search and Rescue crew after their boat capsized about a kilometre from Lonsdale Quay. The five men were out on the water in a 17-foot speedboat when the boat capsized, flipping upside down and throwing all on
board into the water just as dark was setting in. Luckily the crew of North Vancouver’s volunteer search and rescue Unit 2 were already in the area. Coxswain Dan Wright said the crew noticed a white object in the water at the same time they were hailed by the nearby Seaspan Hawk. When the rescuers arrived minutes later, the men in the water were “barely holding on” to their overturned boat, said Wright. Only two of the five were wearing lifejackets.
“The guys lucked out,” he said. All five were taken to Lions Gate Hospital for observation and treatment of minor injuries. It isn’t clear how the boat capsized. “It’s not the easiest thing to do,” said Wright. The Vancouver Police Department is asking for the public’s help in investigating the incident. “Police believe that there were people in the area who could provide valuable information about what led to the boat capsizing,” said Const. Jamie Gibson of

Three N. Shore mayors get pay bump in 2013
From page 1
“The majority of the increase is due to retroactive salary, resulting from the settlement of new contracts, added to 2013 salaries,” said McDonald. “This means a number of the staff who earned above six figures in 2013 would drop back down to five figures in 2014.” In 2012, there were approximately 194 employees in all three municipalities combined that earned a six-figure
salary, but a year later that figure jumped to more than 250 employees. “Year-to-year comparisons can be deceiving since remuneration is impacted by payments related to retroactive salary adjustments and vacation payouts in 2013,” said Connie Rabold, communications manager for the City of North Vancouver. Rabold points out that according the Statement of Financial Information,
Man arrested for allegedly filming women’s washroom
or SOFI, city employees’ salaries in 2013 exceeded their base pay because of “vacation payouts and labour contract settlements,” including the IAFF Local 296 Firefighters union, which had an impact on the number of employees earning a six-figure salary. “The IAFF 2010 to 2012 collective agreement was ratified in December 2012,” said Rabold. “And retroactive (pay) was paid in 2013 for the years 2010, 2011.”
Each of the mayors saw an increase last year in salaries as well. West Van Mayor Michael Smith earned almost $78,000, North Van City Mayor Darrell Mussatto more than $95,000 and North Van District Mayor Richard Walton more than $97,000. City of North Vancouver council was the biggest spender out of the three municipal councils, racking up more than $39,000 in expenses, while North Vancouver District spent less than half of that,

Bear-related calls skyrocket

“There were Band-Aids. There were undigested fast food wrappers. It’s indicative of a bear feeding on unnatural food sources — garbage,” Hunter said. Hunter said the conservation officer on the scene had no choice but to shoot the bear. “Given that it made contact with humans, it entered the dwelling house and caused injury. … In this case, it totally fit the profile of a black bear that
we do not release. We just cannot afford for that to happen again with that bear.” Bear-related calls have skyrocketed over the last week, Hunter said, almost all of them related to bears getting into garbage. Conservation officers prefer to reduce bear conflicts through education, Hunter said, but the sheer number of calls means the ticket book will be coming out. “My officers have been out and issuing fines to

A second offence can result in the resident facing a $575-fine or a trip to court where maximum fine is $10,000 or six months in jail.

a total of $221,924, up from the previous year’s $171,520. West Van’s fire chief, James Cook, earned more than $173,000, up from his previous salary of about $167,000. Policing services in North Vancouver District cost more than $11.8 million, while West Van’s was less, at $9.7

Bad news bears
A
s we head into the dog days of summer on the North Shore, another animal has been making the news lately: bears Last week, a large female bear lumbered into a mall parking lot and got comfortable up a tree (at least, until conservation officers arrived with a tranquilizer gun). Prior to that, another bear sauntered into a laundry room to eat some popcorn, a second sashayed through an open front door on St. Andrews and the third broke a garage door where some food was stored. That bears are part of the North Shore landscape should not be a huge surprise. Over the years we have moved farther into their territory. Bears have a keen sense of smell and doubtless prefer an easy meal to an afternoon of hard foraging in the bush. For the bears, however, this rarely works out to a good end.
MAILBOX
This week, another bear was on the losing end of such an interaction when it startled a 93-year-old woman by rummaging through her kitchen fridge. This time, conservation officers destroyed the bear after noting human garbage like plastic, tinfoil and bandages in the scat it had left. That’s a sad reflection of our continued unwillingness to ensure our own waste doesn’t become another creature’s undoing despite decades of public education. Bears that invade houses in search of food have learned that behaviour from too many of us who didn’t pay attention. It’s never a pleasant job for conservation officers to destroy the animals they are charged with protecting. When they do, we all bear some responsibility for pulling the trigger.

Gambier woodlot program ‘makes sense’ Dear Editor: Re. Gambier Woodlots Put on Hold, July 2 I own the existing woodlot on Gambier Island. My family first came to Gambier in 1912 and I moved to Gambier from North Vancouver in 1968. Everyone said I was nuts to come to Gambier. They said I’d never get a job. But I found work and then in 1990 I received approval for my 400-
hectare woodlot. The people I see and talk to on Gambier support my woodlot. When I build roads I leave them there for the future. People like it because they can walk through the forest. More people are coming over to the island now because of the openings and the trails the woodlot creates. Some people are worried about the two new woodlots tendered for sale
on Gambier. I don’t think there’s reason to be. The woodlot program makes sense for this kind of area. Woodlots are usually locally owned and operate with local contractors. Because of their smaller size and local ties, they’re a good tenure for working with community members. And it won’t be logged all at once as was suggested in the article. With an annual cut of 3,000 m3
for each woodlot, it’ll take approximately 100 years to fully harvest both woodlots. I can testify to the fact that in 100 years the first new trees planted will be 150 feet tall. There are also a lot of regulations and planning in forestry. They won’t be logging near streams or beside the lake. But the roads they build will be great hiking trails for years to come. A lot of
the trails we use now in the area are from logging that happened in the 1940s. Finally, woodlots prevent development. Anywhere there is private property on Gambier and someone can get their hands on it, it gets developed. I know development is not always a bad thing, but I like the woods. Bill Errico Gambier Island
N.Van City council ‘ignores’ citizen input in draft OCP process Dear Editor: I think it a marvel that city council endorsed countless hours and many hundreds of taxpayers’ dollars gathering citizen input via surveys and
public meetings during the lengthy OCP process, only to ignore the clear wishes of the entire city and the recommendations of its own staff, and to shoot down the proposed plan at

Monday’s council meeting on July 7, arbitrarily stating what the OCP will look like. Can we trust the democratic process after such a debacle; can we
trust our tax dollars in the hands of elected officials who say they are listening to our wishes and then totally disregard them? Fortunately, there was a minority on council who
were listening to its citizens and we can only make sure in the next election that they become a much stronger voice. Yvonne Haswell North Vancouver
Potlatch photo reflection of culture in our community Dear Editor: Thank you for publishing the photo and story of the local native event held June 14 at the Squamish Nation Longhouse (page 11, Friday, July 4 edition). Province nailed it with carbon tax Other than beautiful scenery and having the same monarch, B.C. and Australia don’t have much in common. And they have even less in common now, because Australia has scrapped its carbon tax, which is still very much alive and kicking in this province. The Australian carbon tax was introduced in 2010 by a Labor Party government that had just won an election after vowing not to implement such a tax. However, while the Labor Party won the election, it did not win a majority of seats. It needed the support of the Green Party to form government and the price for that was giving the Green Party what it wanted: a carbon tax, which Labor had been on record as opposing before the election. Needless to say, the public was furious. The Labor Party subsequently changed leaders and said it would repeal the carbon tax, but it was still defeated in last year’s election. There is a striking parallel here, of course, to another tax controversy: the HST that former premier Gordon Campbell sprung on an unsuspecting public after the 2009 election campaign, during which his party had actually stated it had no designs to introduce such a tax. Like his Australian counterparts, Campbell was driven from office by a tax revolt. Except, the critical difference here is that another big tax brought in by Campbell — the carbon tax — generated no such revolt,

and instead appears to have paid off. In fact, B.C.’s carbon tax actually hurt the party that opposed it — the NDP, which opposed the tax after it was introduced in 2008, and made its opposition to the tax a key part of its 2009 election platform, which was
firmly rejected by the voters. Campbell artfully tied this province’s carbon tax to a corresponding income tax cut, and a significant rebate scheme for low-income earners. The result has been that any call for a repeal of the carbon tax in this province would be linked to a tax increase. That’s because the tax collects about $1.1 billion annually, which pays for almost $200 million in tax credits and rebates for low income people, plus a five per cent income tax cut ($235 million) and more than $700 million for a host of business tax cuts. Getting rid of the tax, then, would increase everyone’s income tax bill by five per cent, hit poor people particularly hard, and hit
before an election campaign and not immediately after one. The B.C. Liberals did that with a carbon tax, but failed to do so with the HST.The party was badly bruised and was forced to dump its leader, but still won another term in power. The Australian Labor party implemented the carbon tax like the B.C. Liberals handled the HST, and subsequently chewed up two of its leaders before being booted from power. Playing games with taxes can be very dangerous for governments. B.C.’s carbon tax is an example of the right way of playing the game.
cheap coal for its supply of electricity. The country has also blown about a $7-billion hole in government revenues over the next four years, which will undoubtedly have negative repercussions for the delivery of health care, education and social services. I’m not sure whether the opposite experiences of B.C. and Australia when it comes to a carbon tax means people of one jurisdiction are any more or less environmentally friendly than those in the other. But I do think there’s a lesson here about how to introduce new taxes, whether they are carbonrelated or not.The lesson is this: if a government is going to create a new tax, do it just
businesses with tax hikes that would inevitably be passed onto consumers. No wonder the NDP doesn’t talk about the tax much these days. But the carbon tax also appears to be having the desired impact on what it is supposed to do: lead to a reduction in the use of carbon. According to Sustainable Prosperity, an Ottawa-based “green” research group, fossil fuel use in B.C. has dropped by 16 per cent since the tax came in. Meanwhile, fossil fuel use in the rest of Canada has actually gone up three per cent in that same time period. And as for Australia, well, its status as one of the world’s worst greenhouse gas emitters per capita will continue. The country relies heavily on its vast reserves of

CapU salary caps exceeded, says NDP NDP ‘wrong’ about executive compensation:Virk
BRENT RICHTER brichter@nsnews.com
The B.C. New Democrats are raising questions about possible overpayments of Capilano University’s top administrators. The B.C. Liberals created a salary freeze in 2011 and capped the “maximum amount of compensation that can be paid to individuals at the schools,” according to David Eby, MLA and former advanced education critic for the NDP. But since that time, public documents show the cap is routinely surpassed. By Eby’s crunching of the numbers, Capilano president Kris Bulcroft has received close to $15,000 more than allowable over the last three years. Vice-presidents Catherine Vertesi and Cindy Turner are roughly $32,000 and $113,000
over the cap in the same period, respectively. The alleged overpayments are part of $1.1 million in questionable payments to 14 top administrators at CapU, Vancouver Island University and the University of the Fraser Valley. But part of the difficulty in determining this is that Advanced Education Minister Amrik Virk has refused to release what the actual salary cap is on the grounds it could damage future negotiations. Eby’s calculations are based on information he gathered from legislative library and Public Sector Employers’ Council. After first denying earlier NDP accusations, Virk has since admitted to helping Kwantlen Polytechnic University skirt the cap as a Kwantlen board member by devising a $50,000 do-nothing contract for the incoming
president. No stranger to the stonewall is Jennifer O’Keeffe, a Capilano studio arts grad and student union representative who has been routinely filing freedom of information requests with the administration since her program was cut in 2013. So far, she’s had little luck getting cogent financial data about the cap. O’Keeffe said if there has been an overpayment, it should come back to the students. “I would hope the president and VPs would take it upon themselves to pay back the amount that was overcompensated to them — back to the university as it would be perhaps beneficial in supporting student services and programs at the school.” Virk later issued a statement calling Eby’s claims wrong because total compensation includes benefits, pension, and onetime payouts like unused vacation pay. “Amounts can fluctuate
year to year due to increases in benefit and pension costs beyond the employer’s control, and one-time payments such as unused vacation payouts,” she wrote. “Vice-presidents, and all other excluded employees, have a salary range approved by Public Sector Employers’ Council that does not include additional benefits and pension, employment insurance and Canada Pension Plan, which can account for approximately 20 per cent. As with presidents, these amounts can vary year to year due to increases in items beyond the employer’s control.” Capilano University
board chairwoman Jane Shackell issued a statement Wednesday saying all administrators are being paid in accordance with the law. “The compensation for all executives at Capilano University is within the PSEC’s approved salary range and is determined based on a job evaluation plan. Benefit provisions are also governed by PSEC and approved by government. The executive compensation disclosure statements are posted both on our external website and on PSEC’s website,” Shackell stated. Eby said if there is any confusion about university executive payments, it is on

Virk to clear it up. “If he really feels that we’re wrong, why won’t he release the caps for all 22 schools? “This is not a transparent operation by any stretch and this is coming from a guy (Virk) who has been wrong before when it comes to these issues,” he said. “Going back and attempting to claw back $10,000 here and $5,000 there from these people would be incredibly difficult and not only that, unfair. I think what we’re hoping for here is that the rules are made clear and that the rules are enforced equally among all the schools.”

INQUIRING REPORTER Onetime Vision Vancouver hopeful Trish Kelly parted with her party after a blogger with a puritanical streak revealed her troubling past. Tsleil-Waututh start watershed work ANNE WATSON awatson@nsnews.com
A critical salmon habitat and spawning area at the north end of Indian Arm will soon get a boost from a large-scale restoration project. The Tsleil-Waututh Nation, along with the Department of Fisheries and Oceans, are undertaking habitat restoration in the Indian River watershed. The project is the second venture in the past year. The first was completed last September. Bridget Doyle, environmental stewardship co-ordinator for the TsleilWaututh Nation, said work started last year after receiving funding and, along with Fisheries and Oceans Canada, the nation created a program to identify potential priority sites. “We did a project where we created a huge area of off-channel habitat and spawning habitat within the BC Hydro right-of-way that was otherwise just brush underneath,” said Doyle. “And had it connect to the Indian River so that the fish could access it. It’s been a really successful project.” Since 2012, the TsleilWaututh have received
approximately $430,000 for the projects from various sources, including BC Hydro, DFO, Pacific Salmon Foundation and Port Metro, as well as Tsleil-Waututh’s own contribution. Tsleil-Waututh field crews work at least three times a week throughout the year on location. “The majority of our work is maintaining fisheries, enhancing areas and conducting stock assessments on all the stocks that come back every year to the Indian, and we provide that data back to DFO,” said Doyle. “But to enhance that and to really re-establish the historic population levels of the salmon, the nation’s been wanting to restore the watershed for years and so we finally have been able to start with the more, I guess, focused fish habitats.” Both projects are the first large-scale habitat restoration projects in the area in more than 20 years. According to Doyle, logging in the watershed decades ago had an impact on the environment. “Forestry roads that were once there started to fail and create all these landslides, so sedimentation in the river became a big issue,” she said. “On top
of that, BC Hydro put in the huge 5L45 transmission line and FortisBC put in a natural gas pipeline. Although it’s remote and relatively untouched from development, there’s a lot of utility and infrastructure in there.” Sedimentation from forestry roads was not the only issue; the roads themselves became unsafe to travel, said Doyle. The Tsleil-Waututh has been working with the various interest groups to mitigate the effects, including road improvements and environmental impacts. The latest project is approximately 2.5 kilometres up from the Indian River estuary, about a 40-minute boat ride from Deep Cove followed by a trek by quad. “Because of all of the impacts to the watershed, the river’s quite unstable and it’s flashy,” said Doyle, adding that around the 1990s the river actually switched course, causing one section to have a straight run. “It’s eroding the banks downstream of the river that are eventually going to cut off this really nice parcel of land that just so happens to hold an ancient foot path and it’s at a really important fishing area for

wood coming down the river. “We’re trying to create more fish habitat and reduce the downstream erosion to help protect the land and help reduce sedimentation in the river.” After machines left the first project, fish were using it almost immediately, said Doyle. “We had a record run of pink salmon last year,
so they were just swarming any type of waterway there was available,” she said. “We followed up with a minnow trapping survey this year and there were coho overwintering in the new habitat, which was really good to see.” Construction is to start Tuesday be completed in one month.
LOW LEVEL ROAD PROJECT HABITAT COMPENSATION Eagle Habitat
As part of the Low Level Road Project, Port Metro Vancouver is undertaking habitat compensation efforts. The project team consulted with an eagle biologist to improve eagle perching and nesting in the area. The team modified a tree for perching and nesting in Cates Park and installed a nest near Richardson International Terminal.
Green Wall
The Low Level Road retaining wall includes a green wall between St. Patricks Avenue and St. Davids Avenue to help absorb and decrease sound from the road and surrounding area. This natural wall is designed to blend into the surrounding environment and will also help reduce road maintenance costs in the future.
Managing Invasive Species
Invasive species are nuisance plants that can threaten biodiversity. Japanese Knotweed, a highly invasive species known to overtake surrounding vegetation, was found at several locations near the project site. Since 2013, the project team has removed a significant amount of the plant in the area, helping to restore habitat.
At Cates Park, specialists limbed a tree and installed crossbars to allow for eagle perching and to encourage nesting, improving opportunities for future eagle nesting activity.

Classic folk and country covers induce nostalgia
Easy listening ■ Colleen Rennison launches her new album See the Sky About to Rain July 31 at the Rogue Folk Club at St. James Community Square. More info at blackhenmusic.com. STEFANIA SECCIA sseccia@nsnews.com
Colleen Rennison is a born and raised Vancouver girl, but when you listen to her debut solo album, it’s like taking a step back in time to the golden era of folk and country music. The Kitsilano native will be debuting her album See the Sky About to Rain in the heart of downtown Vancouver on July 31. The 25-yearold is used to the spotlight, as she’s also the vocalist in the Vancouver-based rock ‘n’ roll quartet No Sinner, which has toured the world and received plenty of media attention in its own right. But for her solo debut, Rennison takes a step back to focus on the lyrics while the

music takes a back seat. “So much of what I do with No Sinner, it’s like shoving things down your throat and sort of beating you over the head with these songs and these messages,” she says. “I wanted this to be a nice, casual CD you could throw on and not even notice and enjoy it. “I was just hoping that people would really enjoy the album like I have enjoyed those songs so much over the years.” How she interprets her relationship with music is as refreshing as her take on the cover songs in her album. “That’s the thing, I love music. Music speaks to me, always has,” she says. “I’ve always been good at it. It’s always been a place for me, you know?” And the album is a place for anyone. “I was thinking it would be a nice album to play at dinner,” she explained. “It’s a nice background album. It’s nice and relaxing and easy to listen to.” Comprised of classic folk and country covers, the album’s imagery and heavy themes

are given shape by Rennison’s voice, lending the 12 tracks a tone that is certainly easy on the ears. “A lot of these songs are really nostalgic for me from practising them on my road trips with my boyfriend when we were on a motorcycle and riding through North America,” she says. “I just hope they adhere to good moments in people lives, you know?” Rennison worked with West Vancouver native Steve Dawson on the album, who’s so in demand he now splits his time between B.C. and down south. Dawson is a musician and producer, has won two Juno Awards and has produced for the likes of Jim Byrnes, The Sojourners and The Deep Dark Woods, among others. The two first talked about putting out a solo album for Rennison in 2011. “Well, he wound up doing five other albums and moving, so that kind of delayed the release a little bit,” she says. “It all got kind of messed up. I was hoping to get it out actually last fall.”

Transforming a melted substance into a delicate bowl or tiny beads is the basis of glasswork and a new exhibit at the Seymour Art Gallery. Handle with Care, Glassworks from Terminal City Glass Co-Op, is the latest exhibit at the North Vancouver gallery, on now until August 9. “Essentially melted glass is melted glass and it’s the tools that you use and the processes that you apply to it that can help it become all of these other different things,” says Cathy Beaumont, office
manager at Terminal City Glass Co-Op. There are 16 artists participating in the exhibit and visitors can expect to see vases and jewelry, as well as a whole range of art glass applications, says Beaumont. “One of the great things about working with glass is that there’s so many processes that you can use in order to take this molten substance and turn it into a solid piece of art,” says Beaumont. “Some of our artists are glass blowers, so they’re using molten glass directly from the furnace and turning that into large vessels and then treating the surface in a variety of different ways either with sand blasting or applying image transfers directly onto the glass.” Other artists use the glass in a much more miniature way, says Beaumont, using a tablemounted torch to melt
rods of glass in order to make beads. Glass can also be fused, which is done by taking plate glass, assembling it and putting it into a kiln, then melting it into its final shape. “This is one of the reasons why glass is just so infinitely wonderful,” says Beaumont. “You can do so many different things with it to bring basically your own artistic vision to life.” According to Beaumont, Terminal City Glass CoOp, founded in March 2012, is Canada’s first and only non-profit art glass co-op. “The co-op was established to support and develop artists who want to work in glass and also improve the profile (of) glass as an artistic medium in Vancouver,” she says. “So to do that we have the studio here available for our members to use and we also have an extensive program of education courses for people who want to learn glass blowing or bead making or flame working or sand blasting.” Heather Konschuh, a
glassblower and exhibit participant, has three different pieces on display that were all made at Terminal City. “They’re all hot off the press,” says Konschuh. “They play with how the light can go through glass in terms of opaque and transparent colours.” Konschuh says her pieces, including large and small bowls as well as cylinder vases, have a similar colour scheme, using both warm and cool tones. “They have a combination of transparent and opaque colours in the same family, so it would be maybe a pale, opaque blue with a transparent aquamarine,” says Konschuh. “They’re made in such a way that those colours sometimes overlap and create a third colour where they join.” Konschuh has been glassblowing for about 12 years, travelling all across Canada and the world, including England and See Glass page 30

From the initial track on the album “All La Glory” to the Leonard Cohen cover track “Why Don’t You Try,” it’s like traipsing back through time and falling somewhere between the Americana roadmap of the 1950s and ’60s. It wouldn’t be surprising if Rennison was a country vocalist in a past life, singing her songs at a saloon in a southern state at the same time Loretta Lynn herself was making the rounds. “It was just the music that my parents listened to and storytelling for me,” Rennison says about her influences for the album. It was also about putting out an album that put lyrics in the front seat and everything else
— from instruments to back-up vocals — in the back seat. But it’s hard to tell since the lyrics, vocals and beat all complement each other on this album. “Like the song, ‘My Crew,’ it’s so heartbreaking but also really hopeful — just about leaving your friends behind,” she noted. “You don’t really hear a lot of songs like that.” But Rennison maintains that putting the lyrics first was a conscious decision. She wanted her listeners to hear the stories or, in the case of the “See The Sky About To Rain” track, the “prophetic” words in the song. “What I realized, since I started playing more and more with musicians, that is for a lot of people that listen to music and play music, they don’t really think about the lyrics or
what the song’s about,” she added. When Rennison’s distinct and powerful vocal cords present the lyrics, the instruments take a lower volume to allow the listener to hear what she’s saying — rather than having to guess. “The music, rather than being the driving force, is the supporting force,” she says. “I always felt, that’s always been my connection with music because I don’t play an instrument. The only thing I have to hang on to is the lyrics.” For her solo debut album, Rennison wanted to bring it all back home. The launch will be at the Rogue Folk Club at St. James Community Square on July 31. For more information, visit blackhenmusic.com.

CHRISTINE LYON clyon@nsnews.com
For nearly a quarter century, the annual Harmony Arts Festival has drawn thousands of people to West Vancouver for a community celebration of music, art and food. This year is no exception. From Aug. 1 to 10, the parks and streets along the waterfront will be teeming with live entertainment, culinary treats and artisanal offerings. “It’s a great way just to come and spend a summer day or evening with your neighbours and meet all your local artists and enjoy the live music,” says Christie Rosta, special events and festivals manager at the District of West Vancouver, who has overseen the last three Harmony Arts events. During this 24th edition, regular festivalgoers may notice some new additions at Millennium Park. “We are creating a new venue and it’s the Park Royal Beachside Patio,” Rosta says, explaining that the patio space along the pedestrian corridor of Argyle Avenue will host the Glowbal Group’s Fish Shack and serve up beverages by House Wine. Next to the patio is the new Waterfront Lounge, a casual dining venue featuring food from Caffe Al Mercato. This year’s alwayspopular Art Market will feature 52 vendor booths lined up along Argyle Avenue between 14th and 17th streets. Among the juried exhibitors selling their wares are photographers, jewellers, textile artists, glass

Over in the Art Tent beside the Ferry Building Gallery, visitors can learn more about the artistic process or register for a hands-on class as part of the ArtSpeaks series. Among the presentations, Cori Creed will demonstrate oil painting on canvas, Squamish Nation wood carver Xwalacktun will create masks and Nancy RuenFen will teach the basics of Chinese brush painting. Of course, live music
is an essential part of the Harmony Arts Festival and this year’s schedule of events features 60 free concerts on two outdoor stages. “We try to have a different lineup each year,” Rosta says. “We also try to come up with bands that appeal to all ages and have a wide draw.” The Millennium Park stage will host a number of performances each day including evening headliners such as ABBA tribute band ABRA Cadabra, Peak Performance Project participant Shred Kelly and Vancouver folk band The Paperboys. Meanwhile, the Lawson Park stage will host the likes of Andrew Allen, The Tourist Company,
The Matinée and Bobby Bruce’s Nearly Neil and the Solitary Band. On weekends, audiences can stay in Lawson Park after the concert to catch an outdoor movie. Returning musical acts include The Boom Booms, who made their Harmony Arts debut in 2013, and the Dal Richards’ Orchestra, back for yet another year as part of the Seniors’ Series. “It wouldn’t be Harmony without Dal,” Rosta says. Last year’s Harmony Arts Festival drew an estimated 120,000 people over the course of 10 days and Rosta is hopeful 2014 will be even bigger. “It’s just going to be an amazing, energetic, fun 10 days.”

Johansson gets metaphysical in Lucy ■ Lucy.Written and directed by Luc Besson. Starring Scarlett Johansson. Rating: 8 (out of 10) JULIE CRAWFORD ContributingWriter
What is it with Scarlett Johansson’s bodymorphing roles of late? In her last film, Under the Skin, she played an alien birthed into human form who then sets out to seduce and destroy. In Her, she was an operating system with no human form at all. And in Lucy, she plays a woman whose cellular makeup goes violently haywire, giving her extraordinary physical, sensory and intellectual powers. She’s still using that trademark sex appeal, but increasingly it’s used as a means to feed her characters’ need for knowledge and revenge. Director Luc Besson is the king of kick-butt female action roles: Leeloo in The Fifth Element; a 12-year-old assassin’s apprentice in Leon: The Professional; and spy/
assassin La Femme Nikita. He has created another reluctant heroine in Lucy (Johansson), an American student living in Taiwan who is talked into delivering a package to a Korean businessman. What begins as a cautionary tale about bad boyfriend choices becomes a hellish scenario: Mr. Jung (Choi Min-sik, Oldboy) is a druglord using human mules to transport his product throughout Europe. Somehow the fact that he washes his bloody hands with Evian water makes him extra bad. A tense and terrifying hotel room scene is followed by a tense and terrifying captivity scene, where Lucy is beaten so badly that the drugs she’s carrying seep into her system, in a cell-splitting sequence that is at once gruesome and beautiful. Cue Professor Norman (Morgan Freeman), giving us an evolutionary lesson about how most animals use from three to five per cent of their brains, and humans roughly 10 per cent. Lucy is accessing more of
her brain by the minute, unlocking powers humans have only dreamed of. She is determined to bring down Jung before the synthetic drugs carried by other human mules hit the streets, and her time may be running out. It’s a risky move, disturbing the pace of the action only to be schooled on the science at hand or for flashbacks to early humanity — and to Australopithecus, the first female, who was also called Lucy — but it turns out to be a welcome respite from all that intensity and squishy stomach-incision noises. Johansson becomes a little robotic after a while but we learn the storyline demands it. “It’s like all things that make us human are fading away,” she says. The body count piles up: after shooting an anesthetized patient Lucy tells the doctors in the operating room that he would’ve died anyway, a stroke of luck for whatever morals she has left. Not so lucky are all those car-crash victims on the streets

Things get a little trippy around 80 per cent, when Lucy tells us that “one plus one has never equaled two,” and the science goes off on a tangent sure to frighten most English majors.
minutes and Besson doesn’t overstate his point. Aided by Johansson’s star power and with just the right mix of sci-fi, intense action and metaphysical musings, he’s delivered a revelatory spin on the genre.
I know what you’re thinking, but this is no Limitless (Bradley Cooper). As the cells multiply and Lucy taps into more and more of her brain, it’s new thrills-new skills with each passing hour. It’s taut at 90 SPONSORS

Early next month,West Vancouver jewelry designer Tania Gleave will make her shortest commute of the year. It’s just a quick walk from her Ambleside home down to Argyle Avenue where she will join the dozens of other artists and artisans juried into the Art Market at this year’s Harmony Arts Festival. Gleave will have a booth set up during both weekends of the festival — Aug. 1 to 4 and Aug. 8 to 10. “It’s so great to do the Harmony Arts Festival because for all other shows I do, it’s trains, planes and automobiles,” she says, recalling some of the farflung locales in which she’s exhibited her designs. For six years, Gleave co-ran the Lemon Park jewelry company with her sister Penny. Two years ago, the artist struck out on her own and created a whole new jewelry collection under her own label. She does the bulk of the production work in her Lower Lonsdale studio, but also works out of the Granville Island gallery space she operates with her artist husband Peter Kiss. Gleave says it’s the size and the material that really sets her jewelry apart from the rest. “The scale tends to be quite confident, it’s bold,” she says of her signature look, adding, “I consistently use in my
collection leather, bone, horn and ebony.” When working in leather, she collaborates with her Granville Island studio neighbour Monika Sadryna, a leather artist who happily lends her expert hand in exchange for a carved wooden handbag handle or two. Gleave sources her material from all over the world and visits Bali, Indonesia once or twice a year to meet with a carver and discuss whether or not her sketches can be realized in ebony. “I like to be there for that so that we can iron out any challenges that come up,” she says. She has also travelled to the Ratnapura district of Sri Lanka — a region famed for its gem mining. “The mines are tiny. They’re not anything like what we would imagine a mine here in Canada being,” Gleave says, remembering a time when she descended a rickety bamboo ladder into a small hole in the ground. “You climb down the ladder and have a little head lamp on and then you crawl horizontally. It’s pretty rustic.” She watched miners pull raw tourmalines and spinels out of the ground and, in seeing the process, developed a stronger connection to the products she uses in her jewelry. In addition to her signature leather, bone, See Art page 28

from unlikely places. For example, Gleave’s ebony chains may look simple upon first glance, but the links are actually modelled after castoff bits of anchor and ship chain she scavenged from the North Vancouver waterfront. Whatever the piece, all of Gleave’s designs are conversation starters. “The pieces all have a story. I can explain where all of the materials have come from and how they got to be in the shape and form that they are,” she says. “And I think in today’s world that means a lot because there’s so much manufacturing out there that I think it really means a lot to my clientele that they have a piece that has really touched the hands of an artist.” *** The Harmony Arts Festival Art Market takes place along West Vancouver’s Argyle Avenue between 14th and 17th streets on Friday, Aug. 1, 2-9 p.m.; Saturday, Aug. 2 to Monday, Aug. 4, 11 a.m.-9 p.m.; Friday, Aug. 8, 2-9 p.m.; Saturday, Aug. 9 and Sunday, Aug. 10, 11 a.m.-9 p.m. See harmonyarts. ca/artmarket for a full list of participating photographers, jewelers, textile artists, glass workers, painters, woodworkers, potters, metal artists and sculptors.

Glass co-op membership has tripled in two years From page 14
everything sideways.” The self-professed farm girl from Saskatchewan has been creating glass art for 12 years and teaches the art form at Terminal City Glass. She says she supplies to galleries across Canada and England, making glassblowing her full-time job. Konschuh says the longer one devotes to the art, the easier it becomes. “In the beginning when you’re learning how to blow glass, it’s very unnatural because (it’s)
Australia, honing her craft along the way. “One of the more challenging things is that I tell people it’s a little bit like turning clay only you can’t touch it because it’s too hot and you have to make it sideways,” she says. “So we have to use metal tools and wood and thick, soaked paper to form the glass and then we have to manually turn it with one hand and form it with the other and you build
sort of like you pat your head and you rub your stomach, you do two things at the same time, but practice makes perfect,” she says. “It took me three years to make anything that I was proud of.” Konschuh says most art forms come quite naturally to her so grasping the process of glassblowing was a challenge. “Now that I’ve been doing it for 12 years, I can sort of look at something and quite quickly be able to make it, or know the
limitations that there are with the material that we’re using,” she says. Although Konschuh’s work has been featured in numerous galleries, she still finds participating in exhibits exciting. “It challenges you to make a nice, solidified group of work, that they’re cohesive together and kind of show off your talents and of course you only want to submit your best,” she says. “It’s nice to do a show alongside your peers and see what they’ve been
working on too and see it properly displayed.” Beaumont says many of the other exhibit participants are also career glass artists that have shown their work before too, while the rest have never exhibited before. “The wonderful thing for us is that we’re able to support these artists who are really just getting their careers started as well,” she says. Terminal City Glass CoOp has seen a significant jump in membership since
its inception in 2012. Beaumont says two years ago they had about 36 members and now they have 110, as well as a couple hundred people that participate in the education program every year. “Part of the explosive growth that we’ve had in our membership has been because people have been getting entranced by the glass, and the more they learn about it and the more they learn to work with it, the more they want to do that,” says Beaumont.

Do you like music? If so you will no doubt enjoy the delicate stringed musings ofVivaldi’s “Four Seasons,” followed immediately by a bracing heavy metal blast from Killdozer. And who could forget the time that noted Vancouver tenor Ben Heppner brought us all to tears with an impassioned rendition of “Nessun Dorma,” before galvanizing the audience further with a profanitylaced performance of Tupac Shakur’s “Shorty Wanna be a Thug.”

Wait, that never happened. As it turns out, musical tastes vary widely. If,
for instance, you try to play a Justin Bieber song in earshot of me, my ears leap from the sides of my head and run off down the hallway. Just as musical tastes run the gamut, so too with automotive needs. Some buy for wants, others buy for needs — some for safety, others for technology, others for driving pleasure, and some for sheer fuel economy. With the Versa Note, Nissan would like to play you a tune that’s heavy on the legato, while having only a pianissimo effect on
your wallet. The question is: in the cutthroat small car market, is the Note’s performance emphatic enough to be heard?

that’s reserved. Given how well the old Versa hatchback has aged (it hit the streets more than seven years ago now), that’s a good thing long-term. Standard cars come with 15-inch alloy wheels, but there’s a choice of top trims with 16-inch alloys. This week’s tester was the SR model, and had nicely machine-finished darkpainted rims shod with lowrolling-resistance tires. The SR package is approximately the same as the old Sport package Nissan used to sell on its Versa, and includes unique front and rear fascias, side skirts, dark-look headlights and fog-lights, and a rear spoiler. Judging by the album cover, this is potentially a sporty little number.
Environment However, pulling the vinyl out of the sleeve, so to speak, reveals the Note’s true nature. As soon as you open the door, you can tell that this car is designed for easy listenin’, with a roomy, comfortable cabin. Any Nissan salesman worth his salt will insist that
you sit in the back seat of the Note, even before you plonk yourself up front. There’s enough legroom here that Wilt Chamberlain’s chauffeur should have owned one. Rear-facing child seats are an easy fit, leaving plenty of room for adults up front, and four adults could easily pop across town in complete comfort. The SR model comes with sporty looking suede seat covers trimmed in orange. Sporty they may look, but they’re actually a bit more comfort oriented, with less bolstering than I’d like to see.The tradeoff on this is easier ingress and egress, and with a very upright driving position, you won’t have to limbo your way into the Note in a tight parking lot. Some demerits must be handed out for the way Nissan has used quite a lot of hard plastic in this interior, especially compared to how well the old Versa stacked up against its rivals. There are some nice touches, like twin gloveboxes, a leather-wrapped, threespoke steering wheel, and

Marshall amps playing one last power chord tribute to the golden age of the internal combustion engine. For those of you who think this sort of a sledgehammer is a bit silly with gasoline prices pushing past $1.50 per litre, it’s not like the Hellcat’s going to be a commuter. It’s a monster, and like its early 1970s ancestors, some day we’re going to look back and say “remember when?” Of course, anyone who’s lucky enough to have driven a Hellcat will doubtless respond with “Eh? What?” Because their ears will have melted. Awesome. Ford Mustang specs revealed As an entirely more sensible sort of pony car, the Mustang is actually moving forward a bit, with a new Ecoboost turbocharged four-cylinder option available on the upcoming car. Details were revealed early last week as to power outputs and weights. The V-6 model, which was previously something of a performance bargain, sees a slight drop in power to 300 h.p. and 287 footpounds of torque. Expect to see this 3.7-litre V-6 in automatic form at your local rental lot, where your holiday will be improved by the new Mustang’s bigger interior space and enhanced handling. The 5.0-litre V-8 will continue with a bit of a power boost, now up to 435 h.p. and 400 foot-pounds of torque. Both the intake and exhaust sides of the engine have been reworked, allowing it to breathe a little better, but the GT now asks its new powerplant to pull a little more weight, with automatic versions hovering around the 1,700 kilogram mark. The really interesting car for gearheads is the new Ecoboost model. Lighter than the V-8 by 100 kg, the 2.3-litre four-banger cranks out 310 h.p. and 320 footpounds of torque. Don’t let the peak figures steal all the attention either, as that torque is going to come on much earlier than in the V-8 model. This plus a new fully independent suspension out back could make for a weekend warrior that’s still reasonable at the pumps Monday to Friday. Anyone who remembers the old
SVO Mustang should start getting excited. Stolen cheddar bus returned Cheese it, it’s the fuzz! California State police got their man this week, tracking down a trio of stolen VW buses that had been lifted from the Tillamook cheese factory. The three Vee-Dubs were specially converted promotional tools, with the middle section hacked out of them for extra cutefactor. They look like little toon-town toys. The thieves, who were surprisingly adult humans and not really large mice, were caught at a storage lot not far from the hotel where the buses had been parked. As part of a Tillamook promotional tour, the tiny VWs were travelling around the U.S., and are now back home safe in Washington, not even nibbled around the edges. Hot Wheels builds giant Darth Vader car Lord Vader, your car is ready. That was the old tagline Car and Driver forever attached to the Buick GNX. However, perhaps everyone’s favourite Sith Lord might have driven around in a car shaped like his helmet. Released for the San Diego Comic-Con to celebrate Hot Wheels’ new partnership with the Star Wars franchise, a new toy car comes in a presentation lightsaber box and fits nicely on your desk. This being Hot Wheels, that wasn’t good enough, so they built a full-sized one. The rolling machine has a triangular grille and is powered by a 526 h.p. Chevy V-8 with side exhausts. Deeply geeky, but irresistible — search your feelings, you know it to be true. James Garner dies, aged 86 Judging by the price that Steve McQueen automotive memorabilia fetches, the star of LeMans was the celebrity car guy for the ages. But I don’t think so. For me, Garner had all the driving skill McQueen had — and then some — and was a far more honourable and decent man. The tall, rangy Oklahoma native was best loved for his work on the television shows Maverick and The Rockford Files,
in the latter coming up with the signature j-turn people now call a Rockford turn. Basically, reverse at full speed, then snap the wheel around and slam the transmission into drive to squeal out of sight.
Garner did most of his own stunt driving on the show, and also drove actual racing cars when filming Grand Prix, a highly realistic film that competes with Le Mans as one of the best racing movies of
all time. He impressed the professional drivers with his skill, and then went on to compete successfully in offroad Baja racing, including stints with Parnelli Jones. He died aged 86 in his home last week, and will be
much missed: honest, hard working, wry, and no friend to bullies, he was a true maverick. Watch this space for all the week’s best and worst of automotive news, or submit your own auto oddities to mcaleer.nsnews@gmail.com Follow Brendan on Twitter at @brendan_mcaleer.

or lowered right down for maximum space. It flips up too, meaning you can use it to keep the groceries from sliding around too much. Performance How much you’ll enjoy driving the Note will very much depend upon how you intend to drive it.To come back to our musical metaphors, you’d have a heck of time trying to mosh to Vivaldi. Powered by a 1.6-litre four-cylinder making a very modest 109 horsepower and 107 foot-pounds of torque, the Note is available with either a five-speed manual transmission or a continuously variable transmission. The CVT is the only offering on SR models. Even though the SR model looks like the sportiest version in the range, it doesn’t have any chassis enhancements, and comes with those aforementioned low-rollingresistance tires.Trying to carve up a corner with this car is akin to playing Guns n’ Roses’ “Sweet Child O’ Mine” on the oboe. It’s not that you can’t do so, it’s just that it’s very silly to try. Body roll is moderate, but the high seating position and numb steering feel aren’t exactly designed to put you in attack mode. Work the accelerator too hard, and that little 1.6-litre is going to let you know it’s doing a tough job. It’s entirely the wrong way to handle the car, so slow your roll.Where a CVT works is in smooth, efficient driving with moderate inputs. Call it the classical music approach. Here, the Note excels, with the smooth, welldamped ride of a larger car, and only modest wind noise from the large side
mirrors. It easily hits its fuel economy measurements of 7.5 litres/100 kilometres city and 6.0 l/100 km highway, and a careful driver might even be able to beat Transport Canada’s figures without too much difficulty. Note that these are the new, more stringent five cycle test figures, and should not be directly compared to 2014 numbers, as those are often off by 10-15 per cent. Features The Note comes very well equipped at even low levels, with a backup camera, Bluetooth handsfree and streaming audio, and a nice-looking colour display screen on mid-range models. There’s also the Nissan Connect system that allows you to access apps through your smartphone — fiddle as I might, I couldn’t get this to work with my iPhone. The SL model is the queen of the range, with a 360-degree camera, pushbutton ignition and heated seats. SV models can be equipped with everything you need for prices in the mid-teens, and represent the best value in the Note line. If you line them up against what a top-level Micra will cost, they’re actually an even more frugal option than Nissan’s bargain priced micro-hatch. Green light Spacious interior; comfortable ride; excellent fuel-economy. Stop sign Modest acceleration; hard plastics in interior; sporty looks don’t match the drive. The checkered flag Hits all the high notes if you’re looking for a compact See Feature page 41

From page 40 cruiser. Competitor Ford Fiesta ($11,269) Refreshed slightly for 2014, Ford’s Fiesta brings an engaging drive to the table, as well as the ability to option a very frugal 1.0litre Ecoboost engine. This power-dense little unit has plenty of torque, and makes the Fiesta into an ideal highway cruiser. Any Fiesta will be a little sharper-handling than the Note, and while the Ford can’t compete on rear-seat space, up front is quite airy. However, the Versa’s technology layout is far better, especially in basic mode, and a little more accessible to the casual user. For a lot more money,

She retired from racing after she became a mother. Still stumped? The third clue falls just short of giving away Ashley Force Hood, the daughter of John Force, the winningest Funny Car drag racer of all time. What’s up, auto doc? What’s all the talk these days about direct injection? It’s a relatively new buzzword in the industry, although some automakers have been doing it for years. Instead of placing the
fuel injectors in the intake manifold to put fuel into the incoming air, direct injection sprays the fuel right into the combustion chamber. Since cylinder pressure and temperatures are much higher in a combustion chamber than in an intake port (which helps atomize the fuel), special hardware is needed, such as highpressure injectors as well as special pistons with a specific top profile. Using sophisticated electronics, it’s possible to dramatically lean out the air/ fuel mixture under cruising conditions, which improves fuel efficiency. Generally, horsepower and torque are also improved over a traditional port-injection system. eBay watch 1966 Cadillac Coupe DeVille Convertible, sold, US$14,600 Old Caddys make great cruisers and always draw a crowd. This ‘66 DeVille had 64,000 kilometres worth of use during its years in Florida.
