Ethnic outreach scandal
B.C. Liberal ex-staffer stands by her actions JANE SEYD jseyd@nsnews.com
A North Vancouver woman whose past political work has resulted in Election Act charges against two of her former bosses said she has no regrets about speaking to authorities, regardless of the personal price she has paid. “I think I did the right thing,” Sepideh Sarrafpour said this week. “I’m hoping
the truth will prevail and justice will prevail.” Work done by Sarrafpour, a former B.C. Liberal caucus employee, on a 2012 byelection campaign for a B.C. Liberal candidate, is at the centre of a scandal that resulted in Election Act charges this week. On Monday, the justice ministry announced special prosecutor David Butcher See Investigation page 5

Lynn Valley totem pole to go District cites safety concerns over decay in planned removal of community art piece BRENT RICHTER brichter@nsnews.com
It’s been standing watch over Lynn Valley for more than three decades but the totem pole in Kay Borrows Park has rotted, possibly beyond repair. The District of North Vancouver is planning to bring the pole down sometime this month, citing safety issues. “The totem pole is getting to be a concern because it’s getting very old and there’s some structural defects in the pole that may result in it falling,” said district parks manager Judy Rogers. “We had an arborist and a structural engineer look at it and the recommendation from both is to remove it.” The pole at Lynn Valley Road and 29th Street is rife with dry rot, burrowing insects, birds making nests in decayed nooks and woodpeckers, Rogers said. The pole is the work of the late Ken Mayo, the district’s former sign maker. Mayo was not a member of any of the Coast Salish First Nations, but carved the pole for the district in the late 1970s. The district has since informed Mayo’s son about the pole’s removal and put the word out on its website and social media channels. That stoked some keen interest from Brad Baker, the North Vancouver school district’s head of aboriginal programming. “When I saw that tweet by the district, I thought ‘Oh man, it’s a perfect opportunity for the students in the Lynn Valley area, through our carving program, to restore it if it’s restorable,” Baker said. If possible, Baker said he’d like to recruit local First Nations artist to help teach both aboriginal and nonaboriginal students and bring it back to its original colours and shape. “If you look at the bigger picture down the road, there’s a belief on my part that every school should have a Squamish or Tsleil-Waututh welcome pole at its entrance,” he said. Right now, the only two North Vancouver high schools that don’t have an authentic Coast Salish pole are Argyle and Mountainside secondary, Baker said. Rogers said she’s open to all pitches for what comes of the pole but it will be dependent on what shape it’s in. Engineers won’t know for sure until they get it on the ground. It’s highly likely the district will replace the pole with a new piece of public art to accompany the redevelopment of the adjacent Lynn Valley Centre. Any new art for Kay Burrows Park would be selected in consultation with the surrounding community groups, Rogers said.

Police blitz distracted drivers Whether they are getting behind the wheel after too many beers at the barbecue or driving while texting a friend, a number of NorthVancouver residents still haven’t got the message about what’s acceptable when you’re in the drivers’ seat, according to local RCMP. On Sept. 5, North Vancouver RCMP’s traffic patrol handed out 15 tickets after taking part in National Impaired Driving Enforcement Day. Officers set up roadblocks at several locations around North Vancouver. Six drivers who blew over .08 were handed immediate 90-day suspensions. Five more drivers, who blew between .05 and .08, were handed three-day suspensions. Others, including new drivers with any level of alcohol in their system or those who failed roadside sobriety tests, were issued suspensions of between 12 and 24 hours. RCMP Cpl. Richard De Jong, spokesman for the detachment, said people are wrong if they think drunk driving is more likely to happen at Christmas.Warm weather, longer daylight hours and an emphasis on leisure and socializing in the summer can lead to spikes in the number of drunk drivers, he said. This Wednesday, police were out again — this time reminding drivers to leave their phone alone and focus on the road. Officers issued 21 tickets for distracted driving in just an hour and a half. The fine for using an electronic device while driving without being handsfree is $167. — Jane Seyd
Source of beach-water E. coli unknown: VCH Health authority rules out cruise ships, sewage plant as culprits JEREMY SHEPHERD jshepherd@nsnews.com
There are still suspects but not one culprit when it comes to the rash of E. coli bacteria that kept West Vancouverites stuck in the sand this summer. The North Shore’s medical health officer Dr. Mark Lysyshyn appeared before West Vancouver council Monday to talk about beach closures at Ambleside, Dundarave, Eagle Harbour and Sandy
Cove in July and August. Beaches are closed to swimming whenever the E. coli coliform count rises above 200 bacteria in 100 millilitres of water, which can cause gastrointestinal illness and infection of wounds. The summer’s high count was 502, recorded at Eagle Harbour. There’s a lot of contributors to fecal contamination in water, Lysyshyn explained. However, after rounding up the usual suspects, Vancouver Coastal Health is no closer to identifying the cause, according to Lysyshyn. The Lions Gate sewage treatment plant was ruled out after a brief investigation, according to Lysyshyn. “We reviewed their testing results and it didn’t seem like there was anything untoward,” he said.
Some observers suspected the high counts were caused by a cruise ship unburdening itself of sewage but that seems unlikely, according to Lysyshyn. The vast majority of cruise ships are equipped with onboard sewage treatment that are more advanced than the technology at the Lions Gate sewage plant. “That water is cleaner than what is coming out of our sewage treatment plants,” Lysyshyn said. Besides being forbidden from discharging sewage within 12 nautical miles of Canada, measured from the tip of Vancouver Island, the cruise ships are also monitored by satellite surveillance. Animal feces rolling downhill into the water following a heavy rain is still a possibility, according to Lysyshyn. The E. coli problem was likely
exacerbated by dredging at Dundarave Beach and the summer’s relatively still waters. “The slow-moving tide definitely contributes to this because once these bacteria are in the water, normally they’re being washed out by those tides,” Lysyshyn explained. Asked if waste from another river might have been washing up on West Van beaches, Lysyshyn was noncommittal. “District staff have told us that logs from the Fraser River come up right on the shore in West Vancouver. I’m not sure if logs float by the same patterns as fecal matter, so we’re not really sure.” Expensive studies could be undertaken, but VCH is opting to wait until next year to gauge the situation, according to Lysyshyn. “Judging from the past I would imagine that this won’t occur next year.”

Investigation into case continues From page 1
has approved charges against former government staffer Brian Bonney and B.C. Liberal Party employee Mark Robertson following an investigation into last year’s “quick wins” ethnic outreach scandal. According to court documents released by the Criminal Justice Branch, Bonney and Robertson are alleged to have paid Sarrafpour to work on the byelection campaign in Port Moody-Coquitlam without telling candidate David Marsden’s financial agent about the payment, as required under the Election Act. The work by Sarrafpour is alleged to have taken place between Feb. 22 and April 19, 2012. A numbered company doing business as Mainland Communications, connected to the two men, is also named in the court documents. The criminal justice branch said the investigation into the case is continuing and a final report is not expected until next year. But on Wednesday, Sarrafpour praised RCMP investigators and Butcher for their handling of the case, saying she is confident

B.C. Liberal caucus’s ethnic community liaison to win support in various ethnic communities, but quit her job in September of 2012. Her departure left party loyalists scrambling to win her back into the fold. “Have (former MLA) Harry Bloy meet with her and explain how doing anything would damage the premier and the party. Have him say how we will try to find her work and get her back involved,” read an email written by former government communications manager Brian Bonney and later released by the NDP. “If need be, offer her x dollars per month to do non public work up to election (developing her database of potential supporters.)” Sarrafpour confirmed she was offered a job by former MLA Harry Bloy but didn’t take it. Sarrafpour said after she quit, “I was blacklisted” by her former political allies. “I was not able to get a job.” “The whole situation affected me financially, emotionally socially, publicly,” she said. “Basically they ruined my life and reputation.” She said only her belief that she was doing the right
thing — and support shown by investigators working on the case — helped her through. “They really saved my life at a time when everybody was afraid,” she said. Sarrafpour does not face any charges. After the ethnic outreach scandal went public in March 2013, Premier Christy Clark apologized for the leaked plan to achieve “quick wins” among ethnic voters, then Multiculturalism Minister JohnYap resigned from cabinet and several political staffers including Bonney resigned. Robertson still works for the B.C. Liberals as director of field operations. In a statement released Monday, the B.C. Liberal Party characterized the actions behind the charges as an error in financial reporting that had since been corrected. “In November 2013, it was brought to our attention that the party had misreported a $2,240 expenditure related to the 2012 Port Moody Coquitlam byelection. In December 2013, the party filed an amendment to reallocate the expenditure, which Elections B.C. accepted,” the statement said, adding, “Amendments
are permissible under the act, and are commonly filed by all parties.” But NDP critic Mike Farnworth said the latest developments show the premier knew she had something to hide about the connection between Bonney’s taxpayer-funded role in government and partisan Liberal activities.

Ripple effect R
ising ferry fares combined with service cutbacks have scuppered a sizable chunk of the province’s economy, according to a report released this week. The report commissioned by the Union of B.C. Municipalities concluded fare hikes over the past decade have cost the province about $2.3 billion in foregone economic activity. Because while passenger volumes increased for most other modes of transportation during that time frame, on B.C. Ferries they fell sharply. Small coastal communities dependent on ferry traffic may have taken the biggest hit, but they’re not the only ones on stormy seas. The report makes it clear there’s also been a significant ripple effect. One suggestion floated by the report
is to consider an often overlooked level of government for a life ring — in Ottawa — which receives back in taxes considerably more than it invests in the system. But the overwhelming issues faced by B.C. Ferries are still the province’s to consider. Politicians and ferry executives were busy doing the backstroke Wednesday, taking pains not to see the obvious relationship between rising fares and travellers’ decisions to take a pass. But the evidence presented just makes common sense. Why take a family to Vancouver Island on vacation when you can go south of the border for far cheaper? Even “user pay” systems only work as long as there are still users. When they disappear, the report made clear, it affects everyone financially — whether they live in Lonsdale or Lund.
Redevelopment to set sailing club adrift? The Hollyburn Sailing Club: More Grosvenorization of West Vancouver? Fairness, my worst fault, makes me reflective. AgentY6xE9j reports that the club may be sailing away into the sunset — next year put on a month-to-month lease, almost always the precursor to redevelopment. Club commodore Roy Morford’s response: “No gossip or rumours, just the facts. Last year we celebrated our 50th anniversary. … The club’s first premises consisted of an old garden shed located at Dundarave Beach. … Change being the only constant, I fully expect more changes, particularly with West Vancouver’s plans for Ambleside. “Regardless of our location, our lease or other factors, I am confident we

shall continue to be a fixture on the West Vancouver waterfront for many years to come. Indeed, our mayor has said so on more than one occasion.” Notice — nowhere does Morford, a witty chap, deny the rumour. Now this admirably crisp reaction from Michael Ward, senior vice-president and general manager of Grosvenor Americas:
CONTACTUS
“Grosvenor continues to support the Hollyburn Sailing Club in its current location but respects the opinion of the district and the community should they think otherwise.” So Grosvenor supports the club’s location. Could it be that town hall is busting an intestinal tract to anticipate whims that Grosvenor doesn’t have, or does it have its own dream of commercialization of Ambleside Beach? Ward also explains the conflict between the dates for West Van’s Ambleside police station to vacate and the glossy Grosvenor project to begin: “Grosvenor Ambleside will be built in two phases. Construction of the first phase (westerly side of the block) is expected to begin at the end of 2014 or early 2015. Construction of the second phase . . . where the
police station is currently located will commence only after the district has constructed the new Public Safety Building and has relocated the police to this location.” Then why this? All four small businesses cheekby-jowl with the station — near the block’s east end — have been given notice to vacate at the end of next month. Long before the police depart, sod-turning on the new building not even close. Maybe the modest businesses don’t fit nicely with the Grosvenor showroom being built beside them? ••• West Van council heard the pitch for the proposed Woodfibre natural gas operation Monday. As Agent 6Tcu03 implies, the current environmental assessment and opposition
by the Squamish band may kill it without painful political decisions. John Weston, MP for West Vancouver-Sunshine Coast-Sea to Sky, politely writes about a recent item here: “You are wrong in surmising the prime minister or his office had anything to do with my opinion concerning West Van council’s motion on the proposed (Howe Sound liquefied natural gas) plant. The opinion is my own.” I gladly stand corrected, but gently ask:Would an MP, of any party, knowingly do something the party leader wouldn’t like? Meanwhile Weston is aggressively campaigning for re-election in November next year — not May, as recently stated here, though some Liberals expect or perhaps want the federal vote earlier.
•••
Figures quoted here about the Howe Sound LNG project have been vigorously challenged. The opponents’ claim: “If approved,Woodfibre LNG says it will discharge 17,000 tonnes … of chlorinated, desalinated water, 10 degrees hotter than at intake, into Howe Sound every hour of every day for the next 25-plus years. The effect of this on the marine food chain in the Sound . . . could be devastating.” Responding, Fred Bowyer,West Vancouver retired engineer grad who declares neither professional nor financial interest in the project (and his origins at “the other end of the social scale” from the admiral whose name adorns Bowyer Island), writes: See LNG page 10

MLA recall campaigns simply don’t work
Keith Baldrey
View from the Ledge There’s no doubt that emotions are running high in the teachers’ contract dispute, so it is perhaps not surprising that all kinds of people are trying to whip up enthusiasm getting recall campaigns organized against B.C. Liberal MLAs. All I can say is, good luck with that. Since the recall legislation came into effect in the 1990s, there have been 24 applications for a recall campaign filed with Elections B.C.; only a handful got off the ground, and all failed miserably (one was withdrawn after the MLA in question quit). The bar for recalling an MLA is rightly set very high. For a recall petition to succeed and force a byelection, 40 per cent of the registered voters in the riding in question must sign the petition within 60 days. In a number of B.C.’s ridings, the number of signatures required exceeds the number
of people who actually voted, in total, in the last provincial election. On social media (Twitter and Facebook), many teachers are excitedly talking about launching a recall campaign against Education Minister Peter Fassbender in his riding of Surrey-Fleetwood. For such a campaign to succeed, 14,226 people in his riding must sign a petition within two months. To put that in perspective, slightly less than 18,000 people in total even voted in SurreyFleetwood in the last election (including 8,200 for Fassbender). This means that about 80 per cent of those who voted last time would have to sign the petition, or that thousands of people who didn’t vote before would have to be convinced to participate in an electoral process that they refused to partake in previously. There is little evidence — yet — that the general public is as up in arms over the dispute as the teachers understandably are. There are no doubt a lot of angry and frustrated parents out there, but only about half of those who live in Fassbender’s riding likely even have children in the school system, so why should they be expected to sign a petition booting him from office en masse? Others have suggested a recall campaign against Premier Christy Clark

Natural Factors has released their new Whole Earth & Sea supplement line. Borrowing from the wisdom of mother nature, they bring us supplements the way they were supposed to be. Made from food, it’s going back to basics. Made fresh from the harvest of their own farms in the Okanagan, it’s a good thing to know that they control the quality of production from seed to supplement.

This process involves using 100% organic non-GMO seeds which are planted on their own certified organic farms. Now to focus on a few products in this evolving product line: Multivitamins—Your staple in building a foundation of nutrient-rich living. The Whole Earth & Sea Multivitamins provide you with a great selection of your vitamins and minerals which are common to the next generation of supplementation, but it goes beyond this with the Farm Fresh Factors. Farm Fresh Factors starts off with 100 grams of fresh raw plants, processed using a Natural method to retain and intensify the total goodness of whole food into 300mg of vibrant enzymatically rich food. The next product of note, among others, is the Pure Food Herring Gold Omega 3. An interesting fact to know is that this Omega 3 supplement is derived from the roe of Norwegian
Spring-Spawning herring. The unique features of Herring Gold is that it has more Omega-3 phospholipids than krill oil, which makes it an ideal supplement for the brain. In addition to this, it also has choline, which is naturally derived from the herring roe. This choline plays an important role in liver function and cognitive performance. Now with the understanding of these unique features, it makes it easy to see how you can enhance your nutrition to an optimum level by incorporation the Whole Earth & Sea products into your lifestyle. It’s time to experience Nutrient rich living!

of her near-12,000 supporters (those who voted for her last time) siding with the BC Teachers’ Federation over having a premier as their MLA. All this talk of recall campaigns suggests, again, that many BCTF members communicate in an echo chamber, where the only thing they hear is each other. The average person wants schools to be open, but doesn’t necessarily support the BCTF on everything. As I suggested in last week’s column, the public is likely of the “a pox on both your houses” view when it comes to the teachers’ dispute, which doesn’t translate into booting MLAs from office because the teachers’ union is furious. In the end, a recall campaign arising from that dispute has about
••• Vancouver Mayor Gregor Robertson has made the proposed $1.9billion Broadway subway line the centrepiece of his re-election campaign, but I fail to see how he can realistically expect the province to fund it any time soon. As I’ve noted before, that line would run right through two provincial ridings (VancouverFairview and VancouverPoint Grey) that gave the boot to the BC Liberals in the last provincial election. As a result, the chances of a BC Liberal government pushing that particular transportation project anywhere near the
top of its infrastructure priorities list is rather remote. The political centre, as long as the BC Liberals are in power, has shifted out of Vancouver. As a result, transportation projects in places such as Surrey and Langley and the Fraser Valley stand a far better chance of receiving significant provincial government funding than anything in Vancouver. The Broadway line would also need the financial support of the federal government, but the line runs through the Liberal-held seat of Vancouver Quadra. So unless federal Liberal leader Justin Trudeau wins the next election, don’t expect much coming from Ottawa. Keith Baldrey is chief political reporter for Global BC. Keith.Baldrey@globalnews.ca

the fourth and youngest child of the Queen, who for the most part conducts his royal duties out of the limelight. Edward and Sophie aren’t as well known as other members of the Royal Family, said Carolanne Reynolds, West Vancouver monarchist and chair of Heritage West Vancouver, who hosts a tea to celebrate the Royal Family every summer. “They don’t have the charisma of Will and Kate,” she acknowledged, “But there is such a thing as quietly fulfilling your role well, which deserves respect.” Reynolds described Edward as “a complex character who’s had some problems” — ranging from his decision to quit the Marines to a failed film production venture. He married Sophie Rhys-Jones in 1999 and the couple has two children. Reynolds said while some people don’t see the value in the monarchy, “I consider the monarchy our insurance policy. If things get really bad we can appeal to the queen or the king and they can halt our political leaders.” “It’s great to have the head of your country who is not a politician,” she added. Despite the wealth and privilege of the Royal Family, Reynolds said she

— who celebrated his first birthday in July, and is now third in line for the throne. She added that monarchists have recently been given another boost by the news Kate is pregnant with the couple’s second child. Edward and Sophie will wrap up their visit in Kelowna on Tuesday.

LNG discharge akin to ‘tepid tap water’ From page 6 “Woodfibre LNG will discharge what amounts to tepid tap water (chlorinated/ desalinated) into Howe Sound. Natural drainage flow into the Sound averages about 1,656,000 cubic metres of water per hour. 17,000 tonnes/hour from the plant equals … one per cent of the average fresh water drainage into the Sound. “The Sound, east of Gambier and Bowen Islands, has an area of about 175 square kilometres and a depth of about 200 metres. That’s 35 cubic kms or 35 billion cubic metres of water. A year of LNG discharge is 149 million cubic metres, or 0.4 per cent of that. “Oh, did I mention the twice/day water changes due to tidal flows? ‘The effect of this on the marine food chain . . . could be devastating.’ Or not.”
And Victor Morgan writes: “17,000 tonnes per hour? Surely you jest. That works out to approximately 1,000 gallons every second. I wouldn’t think so … the rest of that article certainly makes one think. But those figures?” Search me. I’m just the messenger. Delay dementia—could hearing aids be the answer? Seniors who have untreated hearing loss may be at an increased risk for developing dementia, a loss of brain function that can affect memory, thinking, language, judgment and behavior. This is the finding of a study conducted by researchers from the Division of Otology at Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine.
The

cognitive abilities were tested over a period of time, starting in 1990 and concluding in 2008. Researchers found that study participants who had hearing loss at the beginning of the study were significantly more likely to develop dementia by the end of the study. How might hearing loss and dementia be connected? Investigators aren’t sure, but they think a common pathology may underlie both conditions, or possibly

the strain of decoding sounds over the years may overwhelm the brains of people with hearing loss, leaving them more vulnerable to dementia.
The article concludes that, whatever the cause, these findings may offer a starting point for further research as to whether interventions, even as simple as hearing aids, could delay or prevent dementia by improving patients’ hearing.

Kay Meek Centre launches 10th season

It’s been a decade since Kay Meek Centre opened its doors with its inaugural public performance. With the 2014-2015 season prepared to launch, offering North Shore residents a diverse range of music, theatre, film and children’s programming, those involved with the West Vancouver arts centre are full of enthusiasm for the year to come. “The 10th anniversary is definitely something that we’re quite excited about,” says Jeanne LeSage, Kay Meek’s executive director. The arts centre continues to present highcalibre professional artists, providing a unique experience for local residents in their own backyards.

“I think that’s what’s unique about the Kay Meek Centre and that’s what’s very important about its place on the North Shore,” says LeSage. In addition, centre staff work to ensure its presentations remain accessible for all. “We’ve always made sure that there are tickets starting from $25 for all of our shows,” she says. What LeSage also feels is unique about Kay Meek is its strong focus on working with community partners, including outside groups that use the space, as well as the West Vancouver School District, which accesses the centre on a regular basis. “This is very much in line with what Kay Meek herself really had in mind when she started working with the team to build this place,” says LeSage. “Her wish was very much that this be a community hub, so that you could see professional artists but also kids get to get up on that same stage and get to try things out on their own.” Kay Meek Centre’s season opener is set

for Oct. 1 in its Grosvenor Theatre, bringing together well-known B.C. artists Barney Bentall, Jim Byrnes and John Mann. “It’s going to be a fantastic show,” says LeSage. “It’s the first time the three of them have played together.” Other highlights of Kay Meek’s upcoming music series include a performance by saxophonist and composer Joe Lovano and trumpeter Dave Douglas on Oct. 19, showcasing their quintet, Sound Prints. The show is a co-presentation with the BlueShore Financial Centre for the Performing Arts at Capilano University, a frequent collaborator with Kay Meek. The Cecelia Quartet will take the stage Oct. 26 and Marc Cohn will perform Jan. 25, 2015 in addition to a host of other artists through to the spring. Since You Left Us September 17 - 28
A comedy about a family reunion & a dog named Jack.
Tickets $14 - $28
After a summer of blockbuster excess, it’s time for a little reminder that filmmakers can occasionally make a big splash with a drop-in-thebucket budget. Enter Coherence, a film written, produced and directed by James Ward Byrkit. Despite tight finances and tighter shooting schedule — just five nights — Byrkit has crafted a thoughtful sci-fi mystery that plays with the concepts of identity, reality and, ultimately, the importance of not getting rid of your land line. The evening begins with a typical yuppie dinner party: bring your own bottle and bring your own baggage. Each guest has some secret regret that they
bring to the table, literally. Em (Emily Baldoni) is a dancer who nearly made it; Mike (Nicholas Brendan) is a TV actor no one can remember; Em’s beau Kevin (Maury Serling) may still have the hots for Laurie (Lauren Mahir); assorted substance-abuse spectres and career disappointments lurk just below the surface. Em arrives at the house after having had her cell phone crack while she was holding it in her hand. Weird, no one else can get cell service at all. Could it have anything to do with the comet, scheduled to pass unusually close to Earth that night? Em indulges in a little comet history and how it can make people loopy. (Not 1984’s Night of the Comet Valley-girl crazy, but crazy for real.) After the lights go out Hugh (Hugo Armstrong) decides to wander over to the only lighted house in the neighbourhood and phone See Production page 24

■ EijiTsuburaya: Master of Monsters by August Ragone. Chronicle Books, 208 pages, $36.95. Even though much of his career was spent working in 1/25 scale, EijiTsuburaya remains a giant in the film industry. He began as a cameraman in 1919 but it would be his later years that provided the chance to make his mark. In 1953, when already in his fifties, he was given free rein to create Japan’s first movie monster.
Godzilla became the most expensive film the country
had made and was an instant success. His reputation for creating incredible visual effects grew as big as his monsters and soonTsuburaya was waging battles between Godzilla, Rodan, Mothra, King Kong, Ultraman and a long cast of other mutants.Throughout the sixtiesTsuburaya worked non-stop on films and television programs. Fantastic behind the scenes photographs fill the pages and complement the
detailed accounts of the filmmaking and development of the many productions. The first Godzilla suit was so heavy the actor inside, Haruo Nakajima, could barely move it. A second version, still hefty at 225 pounds, was created and that was the one that stomped throughTokyo. Over the years,Tsuburaya’s monsters destroyed major cities around the world while his most enduring hero, Ultraman, repeatedly saved the day. —Terry Peters

There’s wall to wall art at Presentation House Gallery this fall. The gallery is hot and teeming with workers just a few days before the opening of a new installation that offers viewers a chance to experience one of NewYork’s most influential art salons. Painters are applying the precise shade of blue to burlap walls and the waiting wainscoting while the placement of lights and ledges is meticulously planned in an attempt to create a vision of a version of Gallery 291. In the days before the FirstWorldWar, Gallery 291 was the first and in some cases the only place in North America to see the work of European artists like Rodin, Picasso and Cézanne. The small salon disappeared from the New York art world in 1917 but curious esthetes who’ve wondered what it might be like to tread on its hardwood floors can experience a very close facsimile at Presentation House Gallery. The replica isVancouver artist Kelly Lycan’s concept. Wearing a smock smothered in paint splatter, Lycan explains her interest in the evolution of exhibition spaces from shoebox salons to palatial galleries. “Presentation House is going into a new space and this is looking back at an old space,” she explains. The show’s title, Underglow, is intended underline Gallery 291’s influence. “In a painting you paint it white underneath to create an underglow,” she says. “The historical underglow is of interest to me.” Many museums and

Lycan pored over books and online images to create the “optical experience” on display at PHG. “It’s taking two dimensions and turning it into three dimensions,” she says of transforming her research into a fullyformed installation. Lycan then gestures to the other side of the gallery. “And this is about taking the three dimensional and making it two dimensional.” The other side of the exhibition space is an
imitation of “white cube spaces,” like the Museum of Modern Art and the Guggenheim. After the works of Rodin and Picasso were exhibited in Gallery 291, they graduated to those white cube spaces. In the space of a few feet, Lycan’s installation mimics the journey those paintings travelled over decades. “I’m not putting any art on the wall because we know what that art looks like,” she explains. “I’m also interested in how to represent images without images being present.” Instead of putting art on the walls, Lycan has made
the walls her art. She snapped thousands of pictures of walls of famous art galleries, ultimately selecting six contours to reproduce in shadow and light on PHG’s walls. “It’s a visual experience,” she says. Asked if any of the museums were resistant to letting Lycan snap pictures, she responds: “I didn’t ask,” later allowing that a few clandestine techniques were required. The photos have an “illusionistic quality,” according to Lycan, who explains how one dark See Space page 41

his astrophysicist brother, who instructed him to phone if anything seemed amiss as the comet passed. Hugo returns distraught. He and Amir (Alex Manugian) have seen a mirror of their dinner party: same house, same people. And they return with a box full of unnerving clues. Initially there are all kinds of theories about what is causing all the strange incidents: Beth (Elizabeth Gracen) talks about a freaky feng shui “vortex” in the house; one of the guests may be a tiny bit psychic; someone else may have put an echinaceaketamine cocktail in the food. Meanwhile there are all sorts of handheld-camera scares and things that go bump in the dark. There’s a pertinent discussion about Schrodinger’s Cat Theory and all sorts of alternatereality weirdness. But Byrkit’s is a pared-down
quantum physics lesson, and thanks to some colourcoded glow sticks the proposed theories are easy for the audience to follow. Ever in the background is the question: which version of ourselves would we choose, if we could? Which would we let die? The only members of crew permitted on set during the five-night shoot were the cameramen. Coherence is experimental in that there was no script, just a notecard given to the actors each morning describing their character’s general motivation, plus the occasional detail to work into the dialogue. With no knowledge of where the other actors were going during the scene, the result is a real-time, largely improvised experience. It sounds slap-dash, but it’s not. A committed and expressive ensemble cast keeps the fear real until daylight comes. What happens next is a whole other story.

Since 2004, Maiwa Handprints has been bringing together the world’s leading textile artisans for an annual meeting of creative minds. The 2014 Maiwa Textile Symposium kicked off earlier this month and runs until early November. It includes 12 lectures, 46 workshops, two events and three exhibitions that cover all things textile — from weaving and dying to feltmaking and rug-hooking. Most events take place at the loft above Maiwa’s Granville Island retail store, or at Maiwa East in Vancouver. Two North Vancouver residents are among the impressive roster of experienced artisans leading hands-on workshops. Bonnie Adie is teaching the sold-out Art of Embroidery course Sept. 23 to 25 and Gaye Hansen is leading two bookbinding workshops, Oct. 27 to 29 and Oct. 30 to Nov. 1, both of them also sold out. Adie, who is involved with the North Shore Needle Arts Guild, has been participating in the Maiwa symposium as a volunteer and instructor for many years. “I love teaching and I like having people leave the room very excited about learning something new and something they can use with all kinds of different textiles,” she says.
Her always-popular workshop will introduce students to a long list of traditional embroidery stitches that originated in Europe, the Americas and Asia. “I think more and more textiles are incorporating hand-stitch, and I think it’s important to learn good technique, first of all, and then you can take it whichever way you want,” Adie says, explaining her approach gives students a jumping off point. “Here is the traditional way of doing these stitches and then you can combine them later or you can increase and decrease size, the kind of threads you stitch with.” Students might use their newly acquired skills to decorate clothing or add texture to a piece of fabric that has already had its surface designed. “Really there’s an unlimited avenue after you’ve learned the stitches.” Hansen’s bookbinding courses also prove extremely popular year after year and appeal to a range of learners who want to make their own books using a variety of binding techniques. “Many people are travellers and they want to be able to collate the goodies that they find along their travels and have them all in one spot,” Hansen says, adding that educators who work with children find the craft useful to teach to youngsters. Bookbinding is an ancient art From page 33 “They can do their science projects or their social studies projects in a book format and they can even make their books to begin with.” Many others are drawn to bookbinding because it
is such an ancient art. Hansen, also a master weaver and author of five cookbooks, bound her first book using a kit in 1999 and has been intrigued by the craft ever since. Both she and Adie plan to attend some of the talks and workshops
being offered at this year’s symposium. “It’s a unique opportunity, I think, throughout the world. There’s nothing like this anywhere,” says Adie. Visit maiwa.com to see a schedule of workshops, lectures and events.

Since You Left Us is set to open in a matter of days and playwright Susinn McFarlen has just finished her fourth rewrite in 48 hours. “Ultimately, it makes for a better show,” says McFarlen, who produced a draft version of the play at the 2011 Vancouver International Fringe Festival. She refers to that initial Fringe run as a “workshop” because the script has changed so much since then. “I would say probably a quarter of the show is the same and about three-
quarters is different.” The revised version of SinceYou Left Us makes its world premiere Sept. 17 to 28, kicking off the 2014/15 season at Presentation HouseTheatre. Despite all of McFarlen’s tweaks, the scenario remains much the same. Recovering alcoholic Fanny reluctantly returns home to her dysfunctional family for first time in 15 years. She’s travelled to Vancouver fromToronto to retrieve her 17-yearold runaway son Danno, who wants to get to know his relatives. When Fanny walks in the door, she sees her sister’s beloved old Jack Russell terrier being fed in a highchair while the rest of the family stumbles in drunk from the bar. A turbulent reunion ensues. “It really is a wacko comedy,” McFarlen says, explaining her revisions have See Comedy page 40

made the play even funnier than it was. “I used to feel that the first act was very, very funny and the second act was serious, and now the second act is even funnier than the first act, so I think it’s a much more successful comedy.” This production is directed by Amiel Gladstone and stars Jillian Fargey, Erla Faye Forsyth, Colleen Wheeler, Mike Wasko, Derek Metz, Mike Gill and a plush Jack Russell terrier (McFarlen put out a call, but couldn’t find a real canine to take on the role). SinceYou Left Us is the first play McFarlen has written. The veteran actor and two-time Jessie Award winner says the story was inspired by her own experience with alcoholism in the family. “I wanted to put out there what it’s like in my family, where people are really struggling because of the family systems that develop as a result of
alcoholism,” she says. “But I also wanted to show that in the families of alcoholics, there is just as much love as in any other family.” McFarlen’s family is also “very, very funny,” she says — much like the stage family she created. “I’m not poking fun at alcoholism. I’m saying, ‘This is a wacky, crazy family. Look at them, love them.’” It wasn’t just a good story idea that awoke McFarlen’s inner playwright. She also took up writing in an attempt to create some meaty roles for female actors — particularly older female actors. “What made me write a play is that there’s no good roles for women anymore,” says the 58-year-old. “The women just drop out of the business, and they don’t drop out because they want to, but because there aren’t enough roles.” A few years ago, McFarlen and two other women formedWet Ink Collective, an initiative that supports female playwrights
to write scripts with strong female leads. “We want great stories about women, female protagonists, roles for women that aren’t just the old granny who everyone makes fun of or the self-sacrificing mom. We’re looking at role models for women and so Since You Left Us is my attempt at telling a woman’s story.” As McFarlen’s play synopsis succinctly concludes, SinceYou Left Us “is about making peace with the family you have, not the one you wish you had.” “This is a comedy about a family and about love and also about alcoholism,” she sums up. “It’s dark, it’s outrageous.” ■ Coming up at Presentation House Theatre: RebelWomen (Oct. 3-12), LittleVoices (Oct. 23 and 24), Antony Holland’s Not Going Gentle (Oct. 25 and 26), Where theWildThings Are (Nov. 7-16), PHTheatre Annual Holiday Spectacular! Centre producing The Goodnight Bird From page 13
Odd Couple, produced by the Arts Club Theatre Company, Jan. 12-13, 2015. An exciting season highlight for LeSage is The Goodnight Bird, which she describes as “a real departure.” A coproduction with Montreal’s Centaur Theatre Company, the work will make its North American premiere Jan. 29-Feb. 14, 2015. The Goodnight Bird is being directed by Roy Surette and will star acclaimed local actress Nicola Cavendish. Following its North Shore run, the work will travel to Montreal. “This is a show that we are producing, so it’s rehearsing here, we’re building the sets, the costumes, so this is being created right here in West Van,” says LeSage. This season marks the third time Kay Meek has offered its Cabaret series. Presented in its Studio Theatre, the black box

The shows are also offered at a lower price than mainstage productions. “It’s tables and chairs, bar in the corner. You can sip on a glass of wine
and hear pretty amazing musicians in a small space — Being in the neighbourhood, we’re already starting to get a nice following of folks that love it because they can just walk down the hill and come and have a glass of wine at the Kay Meek and see some pretty great musicians. We’re pretty excited about the continuation of the cabaret,” says LeSage. The first cabaret performance of the season is Oct. 2 by Locarno, a Latin project by Juno award-winning musician Tom Landa of the Paperboys. Other upcoming cabaret performances include B3 Kings Dec. 10-11, Here’s to LadiesWho Laugh March 5, 2015, and AmandaWood: From BritainWith Love April 2, 2015. For the younger set, the centre’s Just Kidding Series features performances by Mermaid Theatre of Nova Scotia’s TheVery Hungry Caterpillar and other Eric Carle Favourites Nov. 30,
a full technical production. For example, this summer, teenage participants worked on A Chorus Line and younger participants, Aladdin. Based on the conservatory’s popularity, Kay Meek is expanding its offerings this year. “This winter we’re actually looking at doing some Youth Conservatory weekend intensives, which we think are going to be very popular,” says LeSage. Planned intensives include Glee-style voice, Fosse dance, stage combat and classical acting. “It’s a little bit of a different format but it’s
and Norman Foote, May 9, 2015. Kay Meek Centre’s film program will also be back for another year. In addition to the regular Tuesday night offerings, they plan to offer some Sunday afternoon screenings followed by a facilitated chat or a presentation by a guest speaker, and discussion. The centre’s Youth Conservatory program will continue to offer children performance-based learning opportunities through classes and workshops at different times of the year, as well as an opportunity to work on
something that we think is going to work really well in West Van,” she says. LeSage encourages community members to mark their calendars for Nov. 6, as Kay Meek will host an anniversary celebration that evening. The event, still in the planning stages, marks the centre’s 10th anniversary of its first public performance. “We’re involving a lot of our community partners to help celebrate and maybe do some performing and also a lot of speaking and involving a lot of the folks that were involved with the early stage,” says LeSage.

2015 Audi RS 7
Scan this page with the Layar app to see video of the Audi RS 7 in action.
Audi’s secret supercar When I was a kid, supercars came in an accepted shape. There weren’t that many around, but you could still spot them a mile away: wedgy, low, enormous spoilers and so many vents you’d think somebody had been attacking the bodywork with an axe. we callow youths pasted on our wall and dreamed of owning. Unfortunately, then we all grew up. However, many of us didn’t grow all the way up. We may have a need for four doors and a spacious hatch, but there’s an undercurrent of desire for those be-winged, impractical beauties. Enter a car that nobody really needs in a sensible
world of speed limits and tight parking. When I drove this red beast’s lesspowerful cousin, the S6, I thought to myself, “Fine. That’s plenty fast, and probably too quick for the public roads. The turbodiesel would probably make more sense.” Audi, on the other hand, apparently looked for direction from Nigel Tufnel, lead guitarist of
Spinal Tap. “Turn it up to 11,” he said. They did. Design The A7 upon which the RS 7 is based is one of the prettier cars in that whole coupe-styled sedan segment being foisted on consumers. What’s more, it’s actually a little more practical than its pure See Rocket page 50

out back (these are just a facade), but to the casual observer, it’s just a big Audi with big wheels. Sure, it says “quattro” up front, but the badging is surprisingly subdued. There are no unsightly side badges, and no gaping fender vents. Should you order it in black or dark grey it would impress from the curb but not beat you over the head with shouts about its performance credentials. I like that.
trim that blends dark oak and aluminium. This wraps around the cockpit in a parabola, setting off the rest of the brushed-metal trim and a well-integrated screen. However, it should be pointed out that it’s possible to get almost all of this opulence in a lessexpensive A7 or S7. No, if you want to know what’s special about the RS 7, we need to look under the hood.
Environment Inside the very nicely appointed cabin, the RS 7 gets all the practical bits of its luxury sedan roots, coupled with very nice diamond stitched leather seats. Curiously, these don’t have adjustable side bolstering, and feel more skewed to the comfort end of the spectrum than outright grip. Headroom out back is compromised by that sloping roof, but for parents of younger children, the A7 frame is entirely workable. The liftback hatch doesn’t provide much more space than the sedan, but it does make loading bulky objects much easier. Probably the nicest interior feature, apart from speakers that rise out of the dashboard like twin USS Enterprises, is the layered silver-and-black
Performance Beneath the RS 7’s fetching bonnet lies the work of a madman. Some lunatic has taken the standard car’s twinturbo V-8 and turned the wick up by not 20 or 30 horsepower, but to a full 560 h.p. For comparison, the mid-engined, V-10powered R8 makes 550 h.p. Ye Gods. Because this engine would chew up and spit out Audi’s seven-speed dualclutch transmission, a more conventional eight-speed automatic is fitted instead. Additionally, as an optional extra, this particular car dispensed with the adjustable air suspension in favour of fixed steel springs with adjustable dampers. Loafing around town, the RS 7 feels a bit rough. If it’s a case of simply See Pedal page 56

Corvette-eating sinkhole filled
A biweekly roundup of automotive news, good, bad and just plain weird:
Corvette Museum fills sinkhole One of the more bizarre stories of late in the automotive realm was the sinkhole that opened up in the middle of the Corvette Museum, causing several cars to plummet to their doom. Over the past months, they hauled a few of these battered machines out, some to be restored, some beyond repair. Given the impact, there was much talk about the idea of keeping the sinkhole open as a part of the museum, perhaps with a glassed-over section, or similar. Now, however, the Corvette Museum has decided to simply fill in the hole — the cost of keeping it would be simply astronomical. They won’t, however, restore all eight of the cars, as previously promised. Three of the eight will be restored, with the rest kept the way they were after the accident, as a tribute to the event.
Land Rover ditches LR2 for Discovery Sport Odds are, you didn’t even know Land Rover still made the LR2.The company mainly seems to sell Range Rovers, LR4s, and maybe an Evoque or two. With the crossover market starting to become the backbone of sales for many manufacturers — Audi’s Q5 currently outsells the BMW 3-Series — it just makes sense that Land Rover would try to find a way to bump up the recognition on their smallest car.Well here it is, coming in early 2015, the Discovery Sport. The chunky LR4 is sold as the Discovery in most overseas markets, and is a pretty neat machine. Despite the luxury trimmings, it’s still a true Landie, and will see hard use in the hands of its second owners, if the first owners never take it anywhere more challenging than a Whistler parking lot. The Discovery Sport, on the other hand, is a CUV in the style of the Evoque,

although with seating for seven and a little more utility. More importantly, it looks like a baby Range Rover, which should boost sales. As usual, all this luxury product planning makes me scratch my head a bit, having grown up with an actual Land Rover from the 1970s, which was sort of like a tractor except with aluminium body panels and a tire on the bonnet. Well anyway, now you get autonomous braking and a 240 horsepower 2.0-litre turbocharged engine, and an eight-inch touchscreen display. The Gods must be crazy.
WRX hatchback mule spotted OK. OK everybody just remain calm. This might be nothing. However, the everactive spy photographer community that hangs out around all the various manufacturer testing areas just released some snaps that should be of interest to any Subaru fans.Their pictures are of a plain black Impreza hatchback, but there’s something else going on. The car has a WRX front fascia, and a removable panel on the hood, indicating that there might be a hood-scoop tucked away under there. Could it be that finally, bowing to pressure from the 50 per cent of WRX buyers who go for the hatchbacks, Subaru is coming out with a fivedoor variant? Oh please let it be true.We need this thing yesterday.

TODAY’S DRIVE
Swiss claiming success for their drive-in brothel From page 52 say: a drive-in what now? Well, they have drive-in liquor stores in Australia, so I suppose anything’s possible. In this particular case, the drive-in brothel was intended as a way to get sex workers off the streets and provide them a safer setting. In this respect, the facility does indeed seem to be a success, and is far enough from residential areas that no one seems to be bothered. So that’s cheese, chocolate, fancy watches, and the drive-in brothel. Oh, and those handy little knives too — thanks, Switzerland! Mercedes-Benz G65 bound for North America Driving an AMGpowered Gelandewagen is a bit like being atop an elephant when it’s suddenly stung by an enormous wasp. One does not accelerate. One stampedes. You can already get the AMG G63 with a twinturbo V-8 cranking out 544 horsepower and that should be plenty. More than enough. A surfeit, surely. However, too much is never enough, so here comes the G65, powered by a 6.0-litre twin-turbo V-12 that makes 604 h.p. and 738 foot-pounds of torque. My goodness me. Top of the food chain for Mercedes SUVs, this hyperactive heffalump should cost somewhere
well beyond the quartermillion mark and is entirely unnecessary and Really Quite Silly Indeed. But still, the world needs overpowered nincompoopery to some degree, so at least the G65 is no longer a Euro-only item. Ford Focus RS gets 350 h.p., AWD The hottest version of Ford’s Focus isn’t available in Canada, possibly because it’s a bit too expensive. However, with sales of the Fiesta and Focus ST both doing well, Ford’s reportedly bringing over their latest RS model starting next year. Rumours are swirling: power will come from the 2.3-litre Ecoboost fourcylinder, cranked up to as much as 350 h.p. All-wheel drive will be standard to get the power down. Each car will come with a free pet unicorn. OK, not really. For the same price as a Subaru STI or the upcoming Golf R, a Focus RS could be just the ticket. Even as luxury marques seem to be reaching down into the compact performance market, could we see a fast Ford to take the fight to cars like the AMG version of the CLA? Time will tell. TODAY’S DRIVE
Pedal tap jumps RS 7 to ridiculous speed From page 50 wanting the biggest, most powerful Audi on offer, stick with the airsuspension as the ride quality on rough roads in sport mode with those big 21-inch wheels is extremely bumpy. However, at highway speeds the RS 7 simply consumes distances in an unruffled manner. Now, many of you are probably asking, “just what the heck are you supposed to do with 550 h.p.?” Good question. After all, British Columbia’s speed limits were recently raised in places by 10 kilometres per hour, not 200. But I want you to sit beside me on a flowing mountain road through the Cascades, behind a slow-moving RV that’s doddering through the corners and ignoring the pullouts. See that dotted line coming up? A pretty short passing lane right? Watch this. The RS 7 doesn’t so much accelerate as it does leap immediately to ridiculous speed.
Sweet mother of pearl — there’s a growl from the exhaust to let you know the twin-turbo V-8 is working, but there’s simply so much torque on offer — 516 foot-pounds at as low as 1,750 r.p.m. — that the brain can barely comprehend the jump. Thanks to the all-wheel drive, there’s also little drama; no tire squirm, no squealing, just instant thrust and you’re around and into clear roads ahead. It’s quick through the corners too, but really, the RS 7’s raison d’être is that momentary lunge in passing or on the on-ramp. Sure, this big red beast would probably hold its own on a track day, but as a street car, it’s that momentary howl that’ll put a grin on your face for the rest of the day. In this way, it’s a bit like the supercars of the past. Exploiting the actual performance isn’t so much the point as that feel of coiled potential. You don’t wring out the RS 7, you See Fuel page 58

Fuel economy not bad From page 56
merely take its leash off briefly (very briefly — ay caramba) and then putter along knowing just what it can do. The old adage is that it’s more fun to drive a slow car fast than a fast car slow, but the RS 7 sort of puts this on its ear a bit, simply because it’s so hilariously over-powered. It’s too much, this thing, and that’s excellent. Eleven out of ten. Features Despite an eye-watering starting price of $115,000, you still need to option up the RS 7 to get some of the amenities you want. That oak and aluminium trim will set you back $2,000, and the B&O audio is a whopping $6,000. Pricey indeed, but this
car is actually significantly less expensive than rivals from BMW and Mercedes. Plus you can drive it yearround with snow tires — maybe I could try living in it. That’d justify the cost, surely. Fuel economy hovered around 10.5 litres/100 kilometres in mixed highway driving, though the more you dip into the boost, the worse it gets. However, for such a big, powerful sedan, that’s very impressive. Green light Outstanding power; reserved(ish) exterior; available luxury appointments; the power; yep, even more power. Stop sign Costly options; lack of spare tire; appetite for tires

and brakes; slightly numb steering. The checkered flag A supercar without the vents and wings. Competitor BMW M6 Gran Coupe ($127,900) Also ridiculously fast, BMW’s four-doored M6 is totally inappropriate for your Gran, so I don’t know why they’ve called it that. Maybe if you put some doilies on the dash it might work. Rear-drive only, the M6 is more of a track machine than the RS 7, with the latter being slightly more confident on the street. I’d give the optional matte paint a miss, unless you like washing your car every single day. mcaleer.nsnews@gmail.com
