Police investigate chemical dump Contents of canisters sent to crime lab for forensic testing
BRENT RICHTER brichter@nsnews.com
It’s not the dump of white powder most North Shore residents get excited about. Police are investigating
after a hiker spotted eight suspicious “small drums” tossed in a wooded area a few metres off of the 4000block of Indian River Drive on Friday evening. The hiker called North Vancouver RCMP,
who called in District of North Vancouver Fire and Rescue Services and North Vancouver City Fire Department, which has a team of hazardous material experts. “Some were sealed and the one that was open had what appeared to be a white powdery substance,” said assistant fire chief Mike Cairns.
One of the canisters was labelled with the name of a chemical associated with methamphetamine production, Cairns said, but police say it’s too soon to jump to any conclusions. “At this point, we don’t know what they are. They’ve been taken away by our crime lab unit to an undisclosed location for forensic examination
So far, there are no persons of interest, De Jong said. After checking the area over, firefighters don’t believe there’s any environmental risk posed by the clandestine dump, Cairns said. “The containers weren’t damaged or leaking so there didn’t appear to be any
to determine what the powder is. At this point, it’s very preliminary,” said Cpl. Richard De Jong, North Vancouver RCMP spokesman. “It could be leftovers from a chemical lab from another community. It could be from an industrial application and someone was disposing of them. Until we know what it is, we’re not speculating.”

Hit-andrun driver sought in North Van BRENT RICHTER brichter@nsnews.com
A North Vancouver woman is nursing her wounds at home after being struck in a hit-andrun while crossing the street. The incident happened just after 6 p.m. Saturday at the intersection of Chesterfield Avenue and 15th Street. The 55-year-old was crossing 15th Street when a southbound minivan collided with her while turning left onto 15th Street, according to North Vancouver RCMP. “The van stopped momentarily but (the driver) did not get out and render assistance,” said Cpl. Richard De Jong, North Vancouver RCMP spokesman. Instead, several witnesses came to the woman’s aid and called 91-1. Those witnesses were SeeVictim page 5

Warm weather on the way Anyone hoping for a December blizzard should probably head to Dairy Queen. The North Shore is in for a warm, wet, and snow-free end to the year, according to Tyler Hamilton, a meteorologist with The Weather Network. However, skiers could be in for a Boxing Day snowfall, said Hamilton, who made his prediction Monday morning. Approximately 10 centimetres of
snow are expected to hit the hills with the majority of flurries falling at an elevation of 1,000 metres. The snowfall will likely drift farther down during the turkey sandwich days after Christmas, the meteorologist added. “By Friday and Saturday, snow levels will be down around 300-400 metres. So some wet flakes could mix in the upper hills on the North Shore,” he said. The no-go on snow is partially due
to a patch of warm water in the Pacific Ocean. The effects of warm surface water in the ocean were felt throughout Metro Vancouver in autumn, Hamilton noted. “It’s almost like Vancouver was running a fever through the months of October, November,” he said. The accuracy of long-range forecasts is slightly below 70 per cent, according to Hamilton. — Jeremy Shepherd

onversations about freedom of expression are always welcome, even when they centre around what looks like a half-bright buddy comedy. The Interview, featuring Seth Rogen and James Franco as dopes duped by CIA spooks to dispatch Korean dictator Kim Jong-un, is destined to be the most discussed, least seen movie of the season, at least theatrically. Ironically named hacker group Guardians of Peace recently targeted the movie and its distributor Sony Pictures, eventually getting the flick pulled from theatres after threatening violence. Basing a movie around the murder of a real person — even a dictator — may be in terrible taste. The Interview itself may be stupid, unfunny or unworthy of our time, but its disappearance has made it important.

Censorship reduces the present and cheats the future out of knowing the past. We can’t allow threats of violence — or even actual violence — to limit what we think, laugh about or discuss. We may minimize a movie as mere fantasy, but as the great director Martin Scorsese points out, a movie is both an invocation of life and an ongoing dialogue with life. Movies remain a cornerstone of our culture, making it the duty of filmmakers to wade into complex, sometimes controversial territory. While we don’t believe Sony’s actions are the modern equivalent of Neville Chamberlain doffing his umbrella to Adolf Hitler, we do believe they have a duty to sell the movie to someone who will show it. Let people avoid the movie out of good taste, not fear.

Trains don’t whistle, they blow their horns Dear Editor: Can we straighten something out once and for all? Modern trains do not whistle. Jeremy Shepherd’s story NV City Silences Whistles at Forbes (Dec. 10) — in which the term whistle and whistling appear almost a dozen
times — notwithstanding, whistles are a product of the steam age. I am sure many North Shore residents fondly recall the soft, sad whoo-oo! of the Royal Hudson back when it hauled trains full of tourists up to Squamish and back. That was a whistle,
everyone, albeit a very nice one. It was powered by steam from the locomotive’s boiler. Diesel locomotives don’t normally produce steam, and have thus blown horns to signal and warn people from their practical infancy some 75 years ago. Yet, for some reason, people
(including writers who should know better) persist in believing that railway engines blow whistles, even though horns and whistles sound nothing at all alike. I’m glad we could clear that up. Wendy Magnall North Vancouver
Editor’s note: According to the CN fact sheet Why Trains Whistle, “Train whistles are safety devices that alert motorists and pedestrians to the presence of an approaching train.” The whistles (CN does not call them horns) on all locomotives manufactured
since 1982 are push-button controlled to provide a consistent sound level. Read more at the following link: portmetrovancouver. com/docs/default-source/ community-north-shorewaterfront-liaison-committee/ Why_Trains_Whistle_-_CN_ Fact_Sheet.pdf?sfvrsn=0

borrowing their cars for tests. Now, I’m wondering who is liable in the event of an accident caused by a student taking a driving class or test? Countless times, I’ve seen a variety of drivers, including parents, City of North Vancouver vehicles and other marked company cars not slow down in school
zones or stop for students and staff at or inside the marked crosswalks before and after school. How do we bring more attention to this important issue? This is the time of year where there is a notable increase of incidents involving pedestrians getting hit by cars. Val Jacober North Vancouver

VIEWPOINT
Political power, not Hydro, drives Site C Critics of the B.C. Liberal government’s decision to green-light the Site C dam project (and there are many reasons to be critical of it) are missing the key point in the whole debate. As much as the decision was about electrical power, it was also about political power. As in, how to keep it. The move to build Site C was entirely in keeping with the political strategy that lies at the heart of the Christy Clark-led government. Strengthening the economy and specifically the natural resources aspect of it are the basis of that strategy. This government’s priorities are not health care or social services or environmental protection. Instead, they are big economic items like the LNG industry, mining and other forms of resource development, and megaprojects like the Site C dam. The howls of outrage that can be heard from the environmental community over Site C are completely lost on the B.C. government

View from the Ledge
and in fact may be more like music to its ears. The greater the wedge the government can create between environmentalists and pro-development folks, the better its chances for maintaining political power in this province. The B.C. Liberals know full well that the environmental activist lobby, while well-organized, well-funded and wellcovered by the media, actually represents a minority point of view among the voting public. An important point here is the “voting public” is quite distinguishable from
the general public. The voting public -- the ones who determine who forms government -- tend to be older voters, who are by nature more cautious and conservative than younger ones. If the younger people at protest rallies against things like Site C or the Kinder Morgan pipeline actually turned out to vote in impressive numbers, that may change things. But until they do, all the chanting slogans in the world are going to matter little. This is not to say actually building Site C is going to be an easy task. There are a half dozen court challenges already filed against the project, with the ones filed by First Nations bands potentially the most problematic. Although the bands in the Peace River area where Site C would be located are among the few who have treaties with the province, they also have constitutionally-protected rights when it comes to their traditional use of the
land, including hunting and fishing activities. The joint review panel that awarded the environmental assessment of Site C also noted the dam poses a “significant adverse effect” to those traditional rights. Depending on how a high court weighs the importance of that finding, the project’s future remains hazy at best. Of course, B.C. Hydro is also negotiating with those bands for some kind of monetary settlement so it remains entirely possible the objections of First Nations may yet be resolved. Nevertheless, the dam’s construction (at least its initial stages) could be delayed by the court challenges. While the project is slated to begin in July, there is every possibility the first shovel in the ground won’t occur until well past that. One of the unique construction challenges for the dam is the fact that diverting the Peace River around the construction site can only take place between August and September,
so you can see the consequences of any major delay in scheduling. Still, even if the dam’s construction is put off a year (and presuming no court challenge ultimately succeeds) there will be work being done at the site by the time the 2017 election rolls around. And that means you can be sure Premier Christy Clark, wearing her trusty hard hat, will visit the Site C dam construction site a number of times. By that time, Site C (and perhaps an LNG plant, should one ever get approved in B.C.), will provide the perfect backdrop for her relentless campaign message: grow
the economy, create jobs and reap the benefits. As they did in 2014, critics will mock her, citing all kinds of accurate statistics to rebuff her claims. But the B.C. Liberals learned in the last campaign that her message resonated with the people who actually vote, and they are betting that will be the case again when they have to ask for another mandate. Clark considers Site C and LNG her potential legacies. No amount of protest rallies are going to knock her off her mark. School board to allow cameras Trustees ease off on banning videos of board meetings
BRENT RICHTER brichter@nsnews.com
The North Vancouver school board is easing back on its ban on recording and livestreaming board meetings — sort of. In recent months, the board has been telling residents they aren’t allowed to record or broadcast meetings because there isn’t an established policy on recording in the boardroom. Former school board candidate Shane Nelson charged that he has a right to record in a public space guaranteed by the Charter of Rights and Freedoms. Addressing the controversy was one of the first orders of business after the newly elected trustees were sworn in and Barry Forward and Megan Higgins were elected chairman and vice-chairwoman respectively on Dec. 9. Initially, the trustees were only expected to vote on a motion that would see the matter discussed at various committees and subcommittees over the next three months, with some possible resolution in February or March. Though virtually everyone at the table agreed with developing a new policy, Lisa Skinner pushed the board to go
another step forward and allow recording devices in meetings in the meantime, as long as the board chairman approves it first. The decision would bring the North Vancouver school district in line with the West Vancouver school board, where Skinner said she “plagiarized” the policy from. “To be walking the walk with respect to engagement and a welcoming atmosphere, increasing . . . transparency and accountability to the public, I don’t know why we would shy away from it from this meeting onward,” she said, Still, there were concerns from a faction at the table that unregulated cameras could result in invasions of privacy, especially if children are present. Franci Stratton noted she was approached by one member of the public who was uncomfortable with being recorded without consent. Cindy Gerlach argued trustees should get their “ducks in a row” rather than make policy willynilly. “I have concerns we are moving too fast. I’m not opposed to the videoing, I just like to make sure we do it in a respectful, reflective way,” she said. Rookie member Jessica Stanley countered that, given the ambiguity of the policy, it would be better to err on the side of transparency. In her first foray into debate at the table, Higgins, who is also
a lawyer, put forward another amendment that would require anyone with a camera refrain from recording members of the gallery and children as well as ensure their camera setup does not block anyone’s view or disrupt the meeting. After some procedural wrangling, the entire motion passed 4-3 with Stratton, Gerlach and Christine Sacré opposed. Forward questioned whether the board even had the authority to tell residents they couldn’t record. “I just don’t know if we’re in a position, as a public body, to restrict people from recording what we do as a board. That’s just my interpretation of that. I haven’t heard any arguments or case law that we can deny it, especially according to the Charter of Rights and Freedoms,” he said. District staff did seek out a legal opinion, according to secretary treasurer Georgia Allison, and it vindicated the board’s previous position. “The legal opinion included all factors, including the Charter of Rights, whether there was any infringement of the individual’s charter rights versus the board’s rights to set procedure,” she said. Following the meeting, Nelson praised the board for finding a balanced approach. “Now they’ve reversed course and (gone) back towards transparency and I think that’s a good idea,” he said.

Passage Island home attracts notice Illegal home one of three that garnered attention of inspectors JANE SEYD jseyd@nsnews.com
No man, and no homeowner, is an island — even if their house is built on one. A couple who bought a property on Passage Island, about a 15-minute boat ride from West Vancouver, learned that recently after the Greater Vancouver Regional District slapped a notice on title over an illegal five-storey home. The notice is a legal warning to prospective buyers that the house was built without a building permit and likely doesn’t meet the current Building Code. That warning hadn’t been officially spelled out when the couple who now own the lot bought the property. But it’s an issue Metro Vancouver officials are hoping to get across to owners of remote properties — both those who unknowingly inherit problems and those who deliberately choose to flout
regulations — “to let them know what the rules are and that there are rules,” said Maria Harris, representative for the unincorporated electoral area within Metro Vancouver’s regional government. There are only about 30 cabins on Passage Island, most of those seasonally occupied. But living on an island or up a remote inlet is no guarantee that a house can be constructed without paying attention to the rules, or attracting the attention of watchful neighbours or building inspectors. In the case of the Passage Island home, former owners of the waterfront lot got a building permit to construct a workshop on the land in 1996. But what they built didn’t match the plans they had submitted, and an occupancy permit was never granted. Despite that, over time the workshop “expanded incrementally,” according to a Metro Vancouver staff report, to connect
Owners ignored a stop work order and a court eventually ordered them to get a building permit within six months or take the building down. More recently, the owners have been attempting to work out a solution with Port Metro Vancouver giving them a long-term lease over the encroachment. “People build without a permit for a whole variety of reasons,” said Harris. She added, “if a large expensive house has been built and that house is in a place it cannot remain, that’s obviously an enormous expense.” Harris said while such cases don’t come before the board at Metro Vancouver very often, there have been three properties where notice was placed on title this fall. Harris said she’s asked that Metro Vancouver staff provide an update on those situations and that more regular communication go out between rural area residents and the regional government. “I see this as an education piece,” she said, “so people aren’t caught off guard.”

Building Code; observations of the buildings’ exteriors, however, suggest that significant portions of both structures may not be built in accordance with the Building Code,” according to the staff report. Neighbours previously complained about the
house in 2000 but no action was taken by inspectors. Current owners bought the property without realizing there were potential problems. Most recently a neighbour complained about unsightliness and potential instability of the home, prompting Metro Vancouver inspectors to investigate. Owners have indicated they are willing to work with staff, said Harris. One hitch is the property does not have a dock, and the couple has only been able
to visit by kayak, she said. But the Passage Island home isn’t the only North Shore property to come under the inspectors’ microscope. Another illegally built water-access property at Johnson Bay — about 20 minutes up Indian Arm from Deep Cove — has also been the subject of official concern. In that case, a home was built without a permit on land that was later discovered to encroach on foreshore owned by Port Metro Vancouver.

It’s not traditional holiday theatre fare, but the musical adaptation of Roald Dahl’s classic 1961 children’s novel James and the Giant Peach carries a message akin to the best-loved stories of the season. Carousel Theatre forYoung People’s production of the show runs until Jan. 4 at The Waterfront Theatre on Granville Island and stars 11-year-old Julian Lokash in the title role. He shares the stage with a motley cast of garden critters including a grasshopper, ladybug, centipede, spider and earthworm. “It’s a wonderful story about family,” says Carole Higgins, director of the production and artistic director of Carousel. “James Henry Trotter, when the show starts he is an orphan and throughout the show he discovers a wonderful

family, and throughout the book too, in this host of insects that he meets. So it becomes a very wonderful loving adoptive family and I think that’s a wonderful message for this time of year.” The musical was developed by Tony-nominated songwriters Benj Pasek and Justin Paul and made its world premiere in Seattle last fall. Like the book, the musical follows the story of James, a little boy who is shipped off to live with his two cruel aunts after his parents are gobbled up by a rhinoceros.Things turn around for James, though, when he discovers a giant magical peach inhabited by fantastical creatures.Together, the new friends embark on a grand adventure in their stone fruit vehicle. “When you adapt a work for the stage, you can’t include absolutely everything, so there have been a few things left out,” Higgins explains of the 90-minute theatrical incarnation of Dahl’s book. But the British author’s famously dark sense of humour is present throughout. “I think that the musical, while being very bright and hopeful, also stays very, very true to the source material and doesn’t shy away from some of the loneliness or darkness that appears at the beginning of James’ journey,” Higgins says.
Due to some scary moments and macabre themes, this production is recommended for ages six and up. Higgins, a Kitsilano resident, grew up in North Vancouver and is in her 14th season as artistic director of Carousel. She still remembers the day she fell in love with theatre. “I certainly recall very vividly my first theatre experience when I was three years old and I think it has stayed with me all my life. That’s why I am in theatre,” she says, recounting a Christmas production she watched in Lethbridge, Alta. in which a family friend played a fairy princess. “That just seemed pretty amazing that somebody could be a princess on stage — a fairy princess at that.” Higgins went on to earn her BFA in acting at Simon Fraser University and has long been committed to engaging children in live theatre. “Arts and culture, and particularly theatre, play a very important role in the development of young people,” she says, explaining that fostering creative expression and imagination is especially important in today’s digital age. “It’s really wonderful to just

Kia’s design is more than shapes, lines and surfaces. It is a sharing of unexpected new and pleasant experiences. To ensure that the all-new 2015 Kia Sedona exceeds the highest standards of design, technology and quality, Peter Schreyer — one of the world’s top 3 automotive designers — thoroughly oversees every aspect in its design direction. For Schreyer, each element should bear the ‘absolute purity’ in order to create the design as a whole. The ‘simplicity’ philosophy is at the core of Kia’s creative language. See kia.ca/sedona for details.

PERFORMANCE
Standup comic learning on the job
Lachlan Patterson eating up the experience working in L.A. ■ Lachlan Patterson, Vancouver Playhouse, Dec. 27 at 8 p.m. For more information visit lachlanpatterson.com. STEFANIA SECCIA sseccia@nsnews.com
Lachlan Patterson sold his first car, a 1979 Volkswagon, through the classifieds section of the North Shore News. “This is a flashback because I used to be a landscaper on the North Shore, I used to be in rubbish removal and I used to advertise in those little classified sections,” he told The News. “You guys got me a lot of work.” But this time, Patterson is on the phone from his home in Venice, Calif. to talk about his skyrocketing career as a standup comedian and his firstever solo show on Dec. 27 — the only stop he has in Canada — at the Vancouver Playhouse. “I’ve been all over that place as a landscaper, I think I’ve touched down in every neighbourhood in North Vancouver, I loved it,” he said. “You can’t really be funny as a gardener. That doesn’t get the job done.” Patterson said he performed a few times on the North Shore dating back his first show in 1995, but he moved to
California in 2007 to pursue his dream of a career in comedy. “I think I’ve gotten to experience every level of comedy from performing in front of one person, having shows cancelled all the way to now having theatres,” he noted. The former North Shore local and West Vancouver secondary grad was a runner up on NBC’s Last Comic Standing last season where he faced judgment from Wanda Sykes, Keenan Wayans, Russell Peters and Roseanne Barr. And after one of his sets on the show, Barr said, “Your writing is fantastic and your delivery is one of a kind. I think you could take this whole show.” And it’s been an unstoppable ride since the show wrapped. Patterson is currently developing his own network series scheduled to premiere fall, 2015. Two weeks ago, he wrapped up his sold out, live 52-city Last Comic Standing tour. “It’s not like music where a kid can just be born with a great voice,” he said. “You can’t be born with an hour of comedy. The best way to write jokes is to fail for years and then you’ll figure it out.” The NBC show was intense, Patterson said, but
he spent all the time he could refining his set and enjoyed the experience. “I have a sarcastic observationalism in me,” he said. “I also have just things, some personal things that I’m going through right now in my life and it’s nice to talk about those things because it’s almost more a release.” Patterson said he’s inspired by many of the great comedians who came before him, such as Chris Rock, Dave Chappelle, Jerry Seinfeld, Louis C.K., Bill Burr and other icons. “I’ve tried really hard not to emulate anybody,” he added. “I want to disguise my influence as best as I can but . . . people come up to me and say, ‘You remind of Daniel Tosh, you remind me of Jim Gaffigan,’ and I’m like, in my head, ‘Noooo.’ “But they are right in that I do love those comedians and those comedians make me laugh.” Much like his favourite comedians, Patterson said he hopes to continue working on pushing the envelope while engaging crowds by sharing the uncomfortable details from his life and observations. “I never want to quit. I never want to retire from this,” he said. “You could give me a billion dollars and I would keep going.” For more information about Patterson and his upcoming show, visit lachlanpatterson.com.
Dahl’s great adventure story meant for the whole family From page 13
put the electronics down and be transported through a wonderful story, whether it be through theatre, music, dance, a great book — whatever it is, I think that those are incredibly important parts of being a human being.” Higgins read James and the Giant Peach when she was a child and isn’t surprised by the book’s enduring popularity. As with any great literature, she says, it’s all about the story. “It’s a great adventure story, it has, certainly, elements of a hero story in
it in terms of James rising to the occasion and really overcoming some real challenges and adversity,” she says. “We have this little boy, who in many ways is an underdog, and is empowered throughout the story.” The term “theatre for young people” can sometimes be a misnomer, Higgins says, as the genre is often dismissed as being just for children. “Not the case at all” with Carousel’s production of James and the Giant Peach, she says. “It’s a wonderful show that the whole family can enjoy together.”

Fashion comes and goes but style spans decades Vintage Fashion Complete by Nicky Albrechtsen (Chronicle Books, 432 pages) $102

Vancouver Calgary Toronto Montreal Moms & Kids
Fashion is always simultaneously looking forward and back. Elements of previous decades can show up in tailoring, textiles, embellishments or other aspects of a garment’s construction. A constantly changing notion, fashions will come and go but within it a sense of style will always stand out. In vintage fashion it is important to seek out those clothes and accessories that demand to be worn because they are the most attractive and the most wearable items from past years. Albrechtsen presents this look at past fashions into three sections: Decades, Elements and Hallmarks. In Decades, the 1920s through to the 1980s are examined with an eye to the iconic styles from each era. In Elements, fashion is looked at by genres including everything from bathing suits to wedding dresses, with special sections on those accessories that
stood out. The last part, Hallmarks, looks at those unique themes that have come to represent vintage fashion, such as nautical and botanical themes, or the Little Black Dress that has been reworked for every decade. Throughout the book hundreds of garments
are shown, mostly on mannequins, but also with fashion photos of the day and illustrations. The information that appears with every photo is a mini history lesson and offers great background details on the specifics of each item. — Terry Peters

Performance The RLX Sport Hybrid’s key selling point is Acura’s claim that it is the most
On these shortest days of the year, the dampness clinging to the North Shore seems like it’ll never leave. There’s a pretty good reason for that: it doesn’t. However, it’s still a contemplative time, a time when we gaze contemplatively out at our lawns of contemplative moss and our gutters jammed full of contemplative pine needles, and the contemplative fluttering of a green plastic bag full of dog poo on the sidewalk (why do people do this? Worst Christmas present ever). It’s been a heck of a year, one filled with triumphs and disasters, and you hardly know how rambunctious 2015 is going to be. Will North Korea somehow manage to stop

2015 Acura RLX Sport Hybrid
A hybrid with punch
Acura has just released its most powerful and technologically advanced car ever built in the form of a full-size luxury sedan. Although the Acura RLX was introduced just last year and the standard model remains largely unchanged, the rangetopping RLX Sport Hybrid joins Acura’s flagship lineup as a true benchmark model. In the luxury sedan market, Acura tends to go unnoticed, particularly in the upper end of the spectrum. But customers
will find a lot to like in the RLX.
David Chao
Behind the Wheel who seek something different than your neighbour’s BMW 5 Series, Audi A6 or Cadillac CTS
Design The most exciting new feature of the RLX Sport Hybrid is its powertrain. This new hybrid system is similar to the one that will power the soon to be introduced, highly anticipated Acura NSX. On the surface, the RLX Sport Hybrid appears a lot like the standard luxury sedan. To set it apart, the grille has a dark chrome finish and “hybrid” badges adorn the front fenders.
The fun is in the people, not the cars
Also, Acura’s Jewel Eye LED headlights are standard and both the fog lights and turn signals are also LEDs. The interior is also similar to the base model. However, the RLX Sport Hybrid is available with unique material finishes such as the exclusive chestnut wood grain trim.

TODAY’S DRIVE
Three electric motors provide big boost powerful car built by this brand — ever. Under the hood is the same 3.5-litre V-6 found in the standard RLX. Output is rated at 310 horsepower and 272 foot-pounds of torque. But that’s where the similarities end. Mated to the V-6 is a new seven-speed dual clutch transmission with an integrated 35kilowatt electric motor. And Acura didn’t stop there. Two additional 27kilowatt electric motors are mounted in the rear wheels. The three electric motors boost horsepower to 337 and torque to 377 footpounds. Acura worked to ensure the system works seamlessly; the mechanical and electric power is constantly monitored and distributed to different wheels when they need it. The RLX Sport Hybrid comes standard with Acura’s Super Handling All-Wheel Drive and the system is calibrated to automatically bias the power to the outer wheels around a corner. This results in less understeer and more direct steering. Not only will the AWD system meter out power but it will also brake the inside wheel if needed. While braking, the hybrid system will regenerate some energy as well, though unlike some other hybrids, the regenerative braking is very smooth and the pedal feels completely natural. The RLX Sport Hybrid certainly lives up to its name and provides a surprisingly pleasant driving experience, but it’s also fuel efficient. Acura claims it is capable of V-8-like acceleration with a fuel economy of a four-
cylinder engine vehicle. Like other contemporary hybrid vehicles, the RLX Sport Hybrid is able to run in pure electric mode. And to make this Acura as efficient as possible, startstop technology is standard.
Environment Moving inside, the RLX Sport Hybrid is much more familiar. The cabin is welcoming with its standard leather seating surfaces; the front seats are comfortable and supportive and are both heated and cooled. The rear seats are equally as comfortable and provide adequate legroom. Rear side window sunshades are standard to make the ride as pleasant as possible. The redesigned centre console houses the new electronic gear selector. Steering wheel-mounted paddle shifters are also present to change gears when in manual mode. I was frustrated with the new electronic gear selector, however, as it was not intuitive and it felt odd every time I shifted from park to drive, or drive to reverse. Other controls found in the centre stack are operated through Acura’s twin screen interface. The top screen displays navigation and audio information and is controlled by the central mouse or voice command. The lower touchscreen controls the radio and a row of buttons below it adjusts the temperature. While I can see the logical reason for doing this, it took a while to get used to having two screens that displayed different information. In some ways, I feel that Acura has made the whole system more complex than necessary.

Ben Stiller from making movies? Will Stephen Harper tour with The Roots? Will gasoline soon be so cheap that putting 20 bucks in actually makes the fuel needle move again? Who can tell? However, when I look back on my driving year, a pattern emerges. Along with my regular column here, I also write for a few other papers, as well as online for BBC America and the odd thing for Road and Track, and you’d think that most of my best stories found their way to me through the major outlets. They didn’t — either I tracked them down myself, or the lead came from here, from home. An email would arrive, as one has just done, and the message attached would say something along the lines of: “I read your column in the North Shore News, and I have this old/interesting/ weird/fascinating car. Want to take a look at it?” Yes.Yes I do. Very much so. Of all the little bits of memorabilia that clutter
up the desk where I work, none are as precious to me as a note from a reader, even if they’re disagreeing with something I’ve written. Even if it’s a How Dare You sort of note, at least that’s a response. Often times it can feel like you’re firing stuff off into the void. So what did I do this year that was interesting? Well let’s see: I talked to a gent who holds a Bonneville speed record with a streamlined Triumph Triple and tows it down there with a 1950s Rolls-Royce. That was a pretty unique gent, and while I kind of think he’s a maniac for hitting 200+ miles per hour on two wheels on the shifty rutted surface of the salt flats, we could have chatted all day about cars. I did end up chatting most of a day away with Walter Wolf. Wolf made a tonne of money back in the day with oil exploration and essentially bankrolled Lamborghini R&D through most of the 1970s. He owned his own Formula One team, was friends

From page 36
dozens of old Mazda racing cars, as well as some historic vehicles. All the original Miatas from the launch were there, as well as ex-IMSA RX-7s and former LeMans racers. The real surprise was just how grassroots the whole operation was: these are PR guys and management staff working together on their weekends to get old racecars up and running, and then they flog them on the track at historic races. If you’ve ever wondered why Mazda manages to build some fun-to-drive excitement into even their most-basic machines, this is why: the people that work there are nuts. You’d also have to be nuts to hit up Craigslist looking for a Hyundai Pony, but I did that too. I actually ended up driving a totally pristine 1986 edition with the smaller engine. It had 113,000 kilometres on the odometer, was a B.C. car its whole life, and had never been in an accident. What a total time capsule: I couldn’t help humming Bryan Adams the whole time I was driving it. The gent who owned it was a Korean immigrant, and he planned to ship the car back to Korea where his father could take care of it. By essentially pestering people until they gave in, I also managed to lay hands on the Impala from the TV show Supernatural. The car is stored over in Burnaby along with six stunt-car versions, and the show just wrapped up shooting on something like a decade of filming in B.C. The guy who takes care of it has what I consider to be one of the best jobs in the world: he essentially sits down with the producers and comes up with a list of cars that match the characters in a particular episode. Then he has to find them — he has a pool of more than 1,000 cars in the Lower Mainland and beyond that he has amassed since he started his career working on The X-Files. I also managed to find, thanks to the help of Nigel Matthews of Hagerty Insurance, who knows about every cool car in the
Province, an extremely rare Honda. It’s called the Coupe 7 and just predates the Civic. It was never available here, but a gent up in Kelowna brought one back from Australia when he moved. As it was the last project ever personally overseen by Dr. Honda, it provided both an insight into the company’s beginnings and was like shaking hands with the man himself. Other owners of other odd cars were also generous to offer a drive of their pride and joy, and I was all too eager to accept. I had a go in grey-market machines like an Audi RS2 and a BMW Alpina, lit up the tires in a ferocious Noble M400, and then had the drive of the year in a factory-made 1969 Lotus Super Seven. Still grinning about that one. Some of this fun stuff came from asking, but much of it was also offered. The gearhead world is a small club in a way, and there’s all kinds of interesting stuff tucked away in sheds all over this province. But the cars are only the smaller part of it — the stories they have to tell are only interesting because of the people involved. I’ve driven lots of cool stuff this year, but better than that is the friends I’ve made, from the folks I see every year up at the Edgemont car show, to the crazy Japanese gents in Tokyo who drive LeMans cars on the streets. Christmas is coming — in fact it will be here by the time you read this — and while I’ll hope I get a Hot Wheels in my stocking (I mean my kid’s stocking! I’m a grownup! I swear!), my one true wish is that I hope 2015 has more of this. Drop me a line sometime. Shoot me an idea or tell me a story. I can’t wait to hear it.
