Cap U arts students protest cuts

Capilano students destroy art in protest as several university programs suspended Sam Smith newsroom@nsnews.com

Students of Capilano University took sledgehammers and chainsaws to their own art pieces Thursday to protest the proposed cuts the university is making in wake of a $1.3-million budget shortfall. A video on YouTube posted on behalf of the Save Capilano Studio Arts movement shows university students filming and taking pictures while one art student uses a chainsaw to destroy a large pencil — an art piece that was installed publicly on campus. Pictures also show a cement chess board that was smashed by sledgehammers and art pieces shrouded in black cloth around the campus in protest of the proposed cuts. The video states students and faculty weren’t given any notice of the proposed cuts by the administration. Students also posted a Facebook link to sign an online petition to save the arts program. Sandra Ferrens, program co-ordinator for the studio arts diploma — one of the programs on the chopping block — said students are making a mindful protest and are not acting out of hand. The students dismantled their own projects and did not cause any sort of vandalism, she said. Ferrens calls the cuts “short sighted” and said axing arts programs takes a toll on not just the faculty and students, but the community as well. “This is exactly the kind of mentality that results in the problems we’re facing around the world,” she said. She added faculty were given such short notice of the changes, it has left some staff without enough time to find new work. “We were told they were waiting to hear from the provincial government as to what the budget would be before they alerted people to bad news or stress,” she said. “That seems a bit dubious to me.” About 220 classes will be affected. West Van rejects waterfront plans after public outcry

Jeremy Shepherd jshepherd@nsnews.com

THE District of West Vancouver’s guidelines for new businesses at the Ambleside waterfront were abandoned Monday after an outcry from a large contingent of residents concerned about large-scale development.

Council is planning to refine the plans for the area just below Bellevue Avenue between 13th and 18th Streets, possibly returning to the issue in early June. Council was considering allowing a 75-seat wine bar, childcare centre for approximately 40 children, a ferry terminal, and a restaurant in the style of the Beach House Restaurant at Spanish Banks in Vancouver. Other possibilities included equipment rental shops and food and beverage concessions. The motion’s defeat left Mayor Michael Smith chagrined. “This instant negativity that crops up when anything’s proposed is frustrating,” he said. “There’s isn’t another waterfront community in the world that they don’t use their waterfront. Drive down to Ambleside now, you won’t see anybody down there. A park does not have to be exclusively open space.” See Business page 8

ACTING Imam Abu Abdus-Salaam leads prayers at the new mosque located at 1398 West 15th St. in North Vancouver. The $3.05-million facility is a major upgrade for local Muslims after years spent renting recreation centres that served as prayer room each Friday.

NEW MOSQUE SET TO OPEN IN NORTH VANCOUVER

Call to prayer

MONG a cluster of small homes in a suburb just off Marine Drive, a single spire rises above a glass-covered building.

While it hasn’t officially opened yet, North Vancouver’s newest mosque featuring opportunities for five daily prayers is serving the Muslim community at 1398 West 15th Street. The mosque is called Ar-Rahman, loosely translated as the servant of the most compassionate, merciful, beneficent one, according to acting Imam Abu Abdus-Salaam, who smiles and adds, “But it’s just a name.” Located on the former site of St. Richard’s Anglican Church, the centre attracts about 100 faithful Muslims for Friday prayers each week, according to Abdus-Salaam. “In Islam, there is no membership to any mosque. There is no barrier to anyone. There is no distinction when they come here,” he says. “When we stand there we don’t know who is standing beside us except we know it’s another Muslim. . . . You can be standing, literally beside a beggar, or literally you can be standing next to a billionaire.” Neighbours, Muslims, and anyone else with an interest in the mosque will be welcome at the official opening, which is tentatively scheduled for the beginning of May, according to Abdus-Salaam. After purchasing the site for $3.05 million, construction of the mosque lasted approximately one year, according to Masjid-ar-Rahman, president of the North Vancouver Islamic Association. The prospect of construction on the site worried a few residents, according to Abdus-Salaam. “They were a little uneasy at the very beginning because they thought that this would be a lot of high-traffic and a lot congestion and a lot of noise,” he says. However, with most congregations limited to one hour, there haven’t been any issues with neighbours thus far, he says. Aside from a large, flat-screen TV displaying images of Mecca and the times of each daily prayer, the expansive prayer room is largely bare. Chandeliers hang from the high ceiling, illuminating the room’s odd angle. “We could not shift the building but we have to shift

THE mosque features a glass facade designed to reduce any sense of mystery among neighbours. the carpet,” Abdus-Salaam explains, discussing the need for Muslims to face Mecca during prayer. Abdus-Salaam frequently takes to the pulpit. During spring break, he recognized the large number of children in the mosque and took the opportunity to preach about honouring your parents and a larger concept similar to karma.

“What goes around comes around,” he says. “In Arabic terminology it meant: whatever your hands put forth, that’s exactly what you will reap.” The mosque features an entrance for men and a side entrance for women. The women’s prayer room is substantially smaller than the prayer room for men because women are encouraged to worship from home, Abdus-Salaam says. While work and study often preclude prayer during weekdays, all Muslims are encouraged to attend services on Friday. “On Friday everybody should leave their job, leave what they’re doing, and come to the prayer. So they don’t have an excuse,” he says. The times of each prayer vary according to rise and setting of the sun. In the middle of summer, Muslims are expected to offer their first prayer at 4:15 a.m. and their final prayer at about 11:30 p.m., according to Abdus-Salaam. While much of the religion is traditional, the 21st century has a way of intervening. “That’s an international symbol: no phones,” Abdus-Salaam says, gesturing to a picture of a cell phone skewered by a red line affixed to the prayer room’s north wall. After years of offering prayers from rented recreation centres, the mosque is a welcome addition to North Vancouver for many Muslims. “We used to be renting beside Capilano University on Friday only. We used to have about 20 guys at the most,” he says. “Now we are having close to 100.” Attendees in the first weeks have been mainly Sunni Muslims, but Abdus-Salaam stresses that the mosque is for everyone. “This is basically the community’s mosque. It belongs to North Vancouver and everyone’s welcome here,” he says. The construction of the mosque was largely the product of Muslims in North Vancouver, according to Abdus-Salaam. “There’s a lot of money, volunteer and effort that was put into it by members of the community,” he says. “Had it been a full, professional and business venture, it could’ve been done in a year.” For Muslims, the mosque is designed to be the centre of their lives. “Learning takes place here, problems are solved here, conflicts are resolved in this place, people are getting married here, people will be divorced here if they have to according to Islamic law, I mean the Shariah,” Abdus-Salaam says. the North Vancouver campus are: studio arts; textile arts; medical office assistant; interactive design; and applied business technology programs. Short and summer courses on design and film and animation could be suspended. Advanced ceramics, an art institute certificate and the guided imagery in music certificate could also be suspended. There could also be a reduced number of courses in the arts and sciences, including commerce transfer and computing science transfer programs, Capilano University stated on their website. However, if students are entering into the second year of these programs they will be still be offered in the 2013/14 year. “Our operating costs continue to face inflationary pressures, and the transition to a university has resulted in some increased costs, however, our operating grants have remained flat,” the university states on their website. Provost Bill Gibson said the situation is not ideal, but said university administrators are dealing with it as best as they can. “The institution is very cognizant of the impact this has on people,” he said. “We’re trying to introduce it and take it through in as humane a fashion as possible.” Cap U would need $1.3-million more in funding to continue offering the same programs as it does now, according to Gibson, who said the provincial government hasn’t provided that. Gibson said the university couldn’t announce details until April 9 when the budget was fully developed. “We had been planning before that time,

but we couldn’t release anything until we knew what the budget was and what the shortfall was going to be,” he said. The board has chosen to cut these particular programs because they don’t fit in as well with the university model, Gibson said. “We certainly came to the realization that we can’t be all things to all people,” he said. “I guess the bottom line is we’d like the ministry for come up with some money, but we understand they’re in a tight situation too.” Capilano University Faculty Association’s president Joanne Quirk is protesting the cuts as well, asking administration to revisit the decision and make changes. “Over the last 12 years post-secondary institutions in B.C. have seen a 13 per cent drop in real per-student funding from the provincial government,” Quirk said in a public statement. “Today’s budget cuts at Capilano are part of that sad legacy.” As economic conditions improve, funding for Capilano will increase, according to a joint statement posted by local Liberal candidates. “We commend the responsible actions announced by the president and board of governors today, keeping Capilano University on a sustainable financial footing and strengthening its position for the future,” the statement reads. The Liberals state since 2001/2002, operating grants have increased by 27 per cent for the school, and new capital projects have been funded up to roughly $45 million. The Squamish campus is facing suspension of its Adult Basic Education offerings and the Sunshine Coast campus will see a reduction in general courses as well. A final budget decision will not be made until after the May 14 board meeting.

A 46-year-old Chiliwack woman is facing charges after she ploughed into a North Vancouver RCMP cruiser in her car, allegedly while drunk, early Friday morning. A North Vancouver constable was headed west on 13th at Lonsdale around 2:30 a.m., when the woman, coming from the opposite direction, made a dangerous left turn onto Lonsdale and crashed into the squad car. “At 2:30 a.m., we’re often looking for impaired drivers and setting up roadblocks. It’s not very often where they collide with

a police car,” said Cpl. Richard De Jong, spokesman for the North Vancouver RCMP. “Fortunately no one was injured seriously. The negative consequences remain for the other driver of course,” De Jong added. De Jong said the driver was taken back to the North Vancouver detachment — only about two blocks away — where she refused to provide a breath sample. RCMP kept the woman in custody until she was deemed sober enough to be released on a future promise to appear. Police have recommended charges of impaired driving and refusal to provide a breath sample against the driver. Damage to the police vehicle and the woman’s Pontiac Sunfire is estimated at $8,000.

ore than 300 families are burying their dead, or trying to recover their bodies after a building containing sweatshops collapsed in Bangladesh. The victims spent their last day alive making Joe Fresh garments for sale in Canada. This isn’t international news simply because of a high body count or poor building standards in the Third World. It’s news because we are likely all somewhat complicit in these deaths. The Joe Fresh brand has several locations on the North Shore and more on the way. But before you go patting yourself on the back for not shopping there, you’d better check the tags on your shirt and jeans. The garment industry is notorious for relying on sweatshop labour in deplorable conditions.

While the companies could easily offer a better quality of life for their employees, or at least minimum safety standards, for just pennies on the dollar and pass the extra costs on to the consumer, they don’t. Canadian consumers, especially if they aren’t wealthy, often have little choice but to be a party to this. It’s too late to put the globalization genie back in its bottle but it isn’t too late to demand better. Consumers have to speak up and demand that the major brands we buy insist themselves on adequate safeguards and standards in the factories that supply them, rather than the wink-wink audits which have existed for far too long. By continuing to buy these products, without caring how they are created, we give our tacit approval to the practices which led to this week’s tragedy.

Keep West Van natural

Dear Editor: Mayor and Council: Why, oh why, cannot you leave well enough alone? West Vancouver is so blessed with a beautiful natural waterfront, why turn it into a semi commercial waterfront? As the saying goes, give a child a toy in a box and they will play with the box! Whatever happened to using imagination when playing around the waterfront? Contrived entertainment is so boring after a time! Judging by some correspondence, it appears that some people moved to West Vancouver by default, while they still yearned for the downtown style of nightlife. Did they not research before they came? What was the initial attraction to move here in the first place? Certainly not nightlife! Residential development has been incorporated into the Ambleside to Dundarave areas. Putting a residential mix with night entertainment is all very well, but when the patrons want to go home, to their peace and quiet, the residents in these areas are still left with the noise and all that accompanies the entertainment businesses!

In summertime we expect there will be temporary waterfront activities. They come and go. This is tolerable, but, constant? I do not think so! Hard earned taxpayers’ money has gone into opening up the waterfront for grassy parkland. This is widely acceptable. Please continue to do so. Just do not contradict the process by building anything on it again, ever! That would be just plain foolishness! Over time we will lose more and more waterfront land at the eastern end of West Vancouver, waterfront not owned by the municipality. If we commercialize what we presently own, we will lose the uniqueness of what is left of this beautiful Eden. Nature and using one’s imagination, the peace, the quiet, watching wildlife, the serenity of breathing in the beautiful sea air, without cooking odours permeating — this is what makes our West Vancouver parkland waterfront so special. It recharges the weary soul. Humans need this, please never destroy it! Christine Ballantine West Vancouver

Leave of absence the right decision Dear Editor: Regarding your article “Keating to Halt Council Pay During Election,” April 14, we have to say that it’s about time. Coun. Keating opened his campaign office on Feb. 2 and has been very busy on Facebook, Twitter and door to door. On Feb. 23 he posted that he had knocked on more than 1,000 doors already. North Van City Voices wrote to the City of North Vancouver’s mayor and council on March 18 with concerns about the Onni public hearing process. One of the comments we made in that letter was: “It has also been suggested that a councillor participating in an election campaign should take a leave of absence from his duties, because of the potential of a conflict of interest with competing loyalties between public duty and personal interests. We note that this week a councillor in Coquitlam has requested a leave of absence without pay during the campaign.” Mayor Darrell Mussatto’s response was, “There is no law that states a member of council must take a leave of absence when running as a candidate for another level of elected office.” We were of course aware that “there is no law” but agree with Coun. Keating’s statement “I don’t think I can pay full attention to the job.” Toni Bolton for North Van City Voices North Vancouver

Enough about me, but then again

WRITING an autobiography requires the author to dexterously balance compelling modesty and repelling conceit, high-minded truths and titillating details.

Obviously, the autobiographer must also have an intriguing life story, and a sensibility that’s at least faintly recognizable. Into each life some rain must fall, and readers are understandably eager to sniff out that rain in the pages of the book. Writers who keep their personal tragedies and disappointments masked are sometimes seen as cheating. Why write about yourself if you’re not going to tell the whole truth, critics ask, forgetting that not everybody has the capacity for complete honesty or selfanalysis. No matter how humble the autobiography’s protagonist, he or she must provide evidence for why sharing this particular life story was worth killing trees. If the author has any brains, he lets others do the praising for him, merely quoting what some authority has said and then pretending to blush. It’s not an easy gig. People appreciate confidence, but nobody likes a braggart, and arrogance has a way of shining through

Going Coastal

Kate Zimmerman any cracks. You certainly get a glimmer of that in, for instance, Joseph Anton: A Memoir, the autobiography of British-Indian author Salman Rushdie. As you know, he had the great misfortune of having a fatwa issued against him by Iran’s Ayatollah Ruhollah Khomeini because his book, The Satanic Verses, supposedly blasphemed Islam. He spent years in hiding, under police protection; others involved in the book’s production and promotion were injured, even killed. Rushdie thinks enough of himself to believe that the issuing of the fatwa kicked off the dramatic rise in Islamic fundamentalist terrorism worldwide, and he may be right. Over the years, reams of media ink have been devoted

to discussions of Rushdie’s artistic merits, his human worth, and his plight, so he can naturally seem selfinvolved when documenting his life. Nevertheless, Joseph Anton is an engrossing book that discusses such major issues as freedom of speech from one of the most informed perspectives imaginable. For sheer entertainment, one of the best autobiographies I’ve read lately is I Remember Me, by Carl Reiner (who also wrote My Anecdotal Life: A Memoir in 2004). I learned about his latest book when I listened to a superb interview with Reiner by Marc Maron, which I mentioned in this column March 24th. I bought the audio version and spent about a week listening to the comedy legend read it to me. I Remember Me is superb. At 91, Reiner remains smart, amusing and unpretentious. He started out in a one-bedroom apartment in the Bronx, the younger of two sons of a Romanian watchmaker and an Austrian homemaker. Even as an adolescent he was a wise-guy, not bothering to learn Hebrew and instead employing a faux Hebrew “double-talk” when required, like at synagogue. Reiner fell in love with performing, and his friends,

Reiner wrote for iconic TV series like Your Show of Shows, performed in a comedy duo with Mel Brooks, acted in such movies as The Russians Are Coming, The Russians Are Coming, and directed and co-wrote films like The Jerk and All of Me. He even sang in musicals. He also managed to sustain an apparently blissful lifelong marriage, fathering two sons — actordirector Rob and painterdirector Lucas — whose childhood baseball games he assiduously attended and enjoyed — and daughter, Annie, a poet, playwright and author. He lovingly sings the praises of his children and grandchildren in a way that’s only slightly self-indulgent. Reiner has known and worked with countless comedians, actors and musicians, including Jerry Lewis, Steve Martin, Judy Garland, Dinah Shore, and Sidney Bechet. His anecdotes are peppered with references to them at the same time as he celebrates friends we’ve never heard of in tales that feel integral to his repertoire. The man tells good stories, and he regales you like a master.

Among Reiner’s most charming features, and he has a lot of them, are his liberal views and his frank disregard for those who consider themselves important without any particular reason for it. His story about trying to “out-polite” the FBI when a couple of its agents drop in on him for a casual commie-hunt at the height of McCarthyism is but one example. Another: in 1958, Reiner developed a TV pilot called Head of the Family — the precursor to The Dick Van Dyke Show — that actor Peter Lawford wanted to bankroll. Lawford’s fatherin-law and money-man Joseph P. Kennedy Sr. demanded to see the pilot beforehand to ensure that it upheld the strong values with which he felt his family was associated. Reiner notes that Kennedy Senior, who’d reputedly earned his fortune by bootlegging alcohol during Prohibition and was notorious for cheating on his wife with actress Gloria Swanson, was in no position to be censoring anything. In the end, though, he approved the show, and according to Reiner, that was the only good thing Joe Kennedy ever did. Mr. Reiner, however, keeps churning out the hits. Business still struggling, council reminded

From page 1

The district has sought to control waterfront land since 1975, buying 29 of 32 parcels in the area. The district’s long-range plan is to acquire the three remaining lots, but Smith warned it might be an expensive proposition for residents. “We would have to put taxes up 10 per cent just to buy one of those last three properties,” he said. Smith said the logical course of action would be to generate money from the two most recentlyexpropriated houses on the waterfront. The houses would be torn down allowing a business to be built without sacrificing green space, said Smith. “There’s a feeling in the community that economic reality is somebody else’s problem and it’s not. It’s all of our problems,” he said Smith cited the district’s expansion of John Lawson and Millennium Parks. “Where’s the boogeyman?” he said. “We shouldn’t be afraid of looking at change.” Former councillor Rod Day returned to council

chambers to advocate “cottage style” development on the waterfront. A 6,000 square foot restaurant was too big for many onlookers, including Paul Hundal. “Why do we need a restaurant on the waterfront? We don’t,” said Hundal, who suggested a restaurant of that scale would be better suited to nearby Bellevue Avenue. The restaurant could also siphon business from Ambleside eateries, according to Inn Cogneato Bistro proprietor David Hossini, who said restaurants on Marine Drive were “already suffering.” Other residents questioned the wisdom of expropriating additional land for park space and using current park space for a restaurant. There were some supporters for development in the area. A seaside restaurant would draw more diners to the area, boosting business for nearby restaurateurs, according to Peter Schofield. There is a dire need to draw more traffic to the

waterfront, according to West Vancouver chamber of commerce head of advocacy Maggie Pappas. As many as five Bellevue Avenue businesses will be out of business within the year, according to Pappas. Pappas said there is strong support for waterfront development. “I know that there are approximately 80 people here tonight; please don’t be intimidated by that because hundreds more have already said that they want this,” she said. Changing the waterfront zoning to allow development is “potentially exploitative,” according to Elaine Fonseca, a director of the Ambleside Dundarave Ratepayers Association. She called on council to designate the entire area as park space to ensure its use for future generations. Former councillor Shannon Walker encouraged council to refine the plan and move forward. “I would hate, because of negativity and intimidation of change, council doesn’t go forward and consider this.” As an Ambleside landlord, Walker reminded

council of the challenges facing many businesses. “Ambleside is not vibrant. Ambleside is struggling.” Council failed to clearly communicate the plan to the public, according to Coun. Michael Lewis, who said he’d received letters in which worried residents envisioned Coney Island springing up in West Vancouver. With 48 lots in the area, Lewis pointed out that council was considering adding three or four structures to the six lots already developed. Lewis advised against allowing permanent food concessions or a childcare centre. “I also don’t think that you use a $3-million plus piece of real estate to put a childcare facility on the water,” he said. While calling for a reset on the proceedings, Coun. Trish Panz discussed the need to protect West Vancouver’s seaside. “It’s not always been the history in this community that things are assumed to be protected . . . we’ve had some situations where that hasn’t actually come true,” she said.

DNV mulls Lower Capilano draft plan 1,200 new units in plan to come forward in May

Brent Richter brichter@nsnews.com

DISTRICT of North Vancouver council appears poised to pass its Lower Capilano – Marine Village Centre Implementation Plan. If approved next month, the plan will set the stage for the next 20 years of growth and a total redevelopment in the area between Marine Drive and Fullerton Avenue on either side of Capilano Road. The plan envisions about 1,200 more units of housing in townhouses, mid-rise condos and highrises, 100,000 square feet of commercial space, as well as a public plaza, green space and a new community centre. At an informal workshop Monday, council members reflected on the draft and the two years of consultation that produced it. “I’m very excited to see the draft at this stage because it has been informed by so much community engagement, right down to the kitchen table,” said Coun. Alan Nixon. “I feel really confident the temperature that has been taken within the community is 98.6 F and we’re in good shape. There are going to be a few tweaks but the most common comment I hear is ‘When can we get on with it?’” Developer Larco has been waiting for the plan to be passed before submitting its proposal for the piece of the neighbourhood that will be known as the “village centre,” on a 4.35acre site between Curling Road and Fullerton Avenue — formerly the home of the North

At Fraser Academy, we don’t let language-related learning disabilities* such as dyslexia stop our students. As the Lower Mainland’s only fully accredited day school dedicated to students in Grades 1-12 with language-related learning disabilities, we recognize our students learn differently—and we offer them an education in a setting where they can thrive. Fraser Academy achieves this by building trust, through understanding and support, with every student, and by offering a comprehensive education that features small class sizes, interactive classrooms, multi-dimensional programming, assistive technologies, daily one-to-one lessons with language instructors and specialist teachers in all subjects. The result? Fraser Academy students discover the joys of learning (many for the first time in their lives), work hard, become self-advocates for their learning challenges and develop into self-reliant young adults. An impressive 90% of our graduates move on to college and university.

Shore Winter Club. That project would include the community centre along with condos. A lingering concern for almost everyone at the council table was one shared by neighbours — increased traffic in an area that already snarls to a halt during rush hour. The plan includes reroutes and extensions of local streets designed to mitigate traffic problems on Marine Drive as well as changes to the traffic signal patterns. With the Squamish Nation looking to add serious development to its lands in North and West Vancouver, as well as the City of North Vancouver adding to its housing stock, traffic on the Lions Gate Bridge isn’t going to decrease, so the district would do well to start planning for it, Mayor Richard Walton said. The plan includes a detailed traffic study conducted by an outside consultant that found, at full build-out, the area would have an additional 600 vehicle trips per hour at rush hour, above the existing 4,000. The neighbourhood is meant to appeal to younger folks who want to get into home ownership at lower price points than the single-family home market allows, while living in a walkable, transitoriented neighbourhood. The one issue the plan does not address is housing options for the streets that surround the planned centre, though the official community plan calls for the residential buildings at heights that would create a “stepping down” effect in the neighbourhood. Getting to work on that is something council should do sooner, rather than later, Coun. Roger Bassam said. One more issue remains, according to staff — choosing a name for the neighbourhood. Staff are suggesting council consider Capilano Gateway, Capilano Crossroads, Capilano Village and Lionsgate.

MP challenges party whip’s grip Sam Smith newsroom@nsnews.com

West Vancouver-Sunshine Coast-Sea to Sky Country MP John Weston was one of 10 MPs in Ottawa who recently opposed the iron grip held by government parties over who can say what in Parliament. “In my mind this is a historic moment in our parliament,” Weston told the North Shore News. “The principal at stake was who has the authority to administer members’ statements in the house: the speaker or the party whips on behalf of the party leaders?” House of Commons Speaker Andrew Scheer announced on Tuesday that MPs are not constrained by prepared caucus lists, which name who will speak to the chamber. Several MPs have voiced concerns over the potential muzzling of backbenchers excluded from the lists. However, Scheer made the decision that he as Speaker of the House has final say, and MPs can catch his eye if they wish to speak and he will allow them to do so. The issue of any MP being free to speak stems from B.C. Conservative MP Mark Warawa being silenced when he wanted the Commons to vote on a motion about sex-selective abortions. Weston and other MPs argued for Warawa’s right to speak to the Commons even if the subject was considered controversial or not in line with what the party leaders wanted to speak on. “Legislators always have the freedom to speak when they feel it’s necessary,” Weston said. Scheer’s decision makes it clear that MPs can speak their minds if they wish to do so, independent of their party. “The price of liberty is eternal vigilance,” Weston said. However, a Liberal motion to enhance all MPs’ freedom of speech in the Commons was defeated on Thursday by a failed vote of 150 to 96. Liberals put forward that if any MP wishes to make statements that the Speaker follow an alphabetical list rather than the prepared party lists. The Canadian Press has reported none of the Tories who lobbied for an MPs right to speak voted in favour of the Liberal motion.

Transparency important

There are also plans to attain a funeral home licence in order to conduct funerals at the mosque, according to AbdusSalaam. “We’re about to secure our own burial plot where Muslims can be buried,” he says. The mosque may also incorporate a daycare, and plans are underway to build a small playground on its lot. The mosque includes four classrooms as well as a kitchen. For Abdus-Salaam, one of the most important features is the large windows that border much of the mosque. We don’t want people to be passing on the road and say, ‘What goes on within the walls here?’ For those reasons, we make it as transparent as possible,” he says.

it off at 11 p.m. I understand the bylaws, and I also understand the police were doing their job, but it seems a little by the book on a Saturday night. How many teenager or 20-something parties have we endured until 3:30 a.m. with fighting, swearing, broken bottles? We were tame. Loud yes, but tame. We had four visits by the police (five vehicles the last time) and the fire department in tow. I think we received three $90 tickets (I was prepared to budget $1,000, just so you didn’t think your anonymous phone calls to the police would deter us from having a little fun and keeping you up a little later than normal once in 21 years). Too bad the paddy wagon deterred me. Let me know if you want to attend her 60th. Dan Perrett North Vancouver

FINN Rennie’s favourite part of being a member of a local youth group is the sense of belonging and acceptance it affords. “It’s a chance to hang out with friends that are willing to accept your quirks and eccentricities. Being a bit odd is understood there because everyone has had to go through some stuff. You can be yourself without fear of judgment,” he says. Rennie, 16, is a member of the Aspires Youth Lounge, a program of the North Shore-based Aspires Society, created seven years ago by parents of children with

Asperger syndrome, an autism spectrum disorder, with a goal of promoting social inclusion. “It’s a safe place to meet new people, make new friends and be yourself,” says Rennie, who was diagnosed with Asperger’s at age 12. The weekly youth group, open to males and females ages 14 and up, meets Mondays at Harry Jerome community centre. Members meet with the support of a behavioural interventionist in a non-therapeutic environment and engage in a wide range of activities, including a host of field trips like improv nights, golfing, snowshoe excursions and rafting trips. Laser Tag Party set for Wednesday

From page 13

In addition to helping the members work on their interpersonal skills, an important focus of the Youth Lounge is to help them be more independent, provide them with a sense of autonomy and give them an opportunity to feel successful in a friendship setting where they can work together as a team, says North Vancouver resident Stella Crofts-Fagerlund who helped found the society and serves as its board chairwoman. To that end, the Youth Lounge members work together to plan community events and fundraisers, like car washes and bottle drives, to give back to the wider community. Their next event, which is also intended to encourage more local youths with unique personalities to join the Youth Lounge, is a Laser Tag Party, Wednesday, May 1 from 7 to 9 p.m. at Laserdome, located at A110-2455 Dollarton Hwy., in North Vancouver. The society has held similar events for the last five years, previously a pool party, timed with B.C. Youth Week. Rennie, who is leading the event’s organizing committee, is grateful for the support Aspires has received from Ken Ahn at Laserdome and the Rotary Club of Lions Gate to make the event possible. Crofts-Fagerlund’s son, Aaron, 20, has been a member of the Youth Lounge since its launch. Now that he’s older, Aaron has been empowered to serve as a mentor to the younger members. When asked what kind of an impact it’s had on her son’s life, Crofts-Fagerlund says, “How can I count the ways? All the friendships for a start. I think they’ll be lifelong friendships. Confidence, self-esteem and it’s created a wealth of independence. . . . His compassion for others with social challenges is huge. . . . He’s always looking out for the underdog. . . . It’s helped him to learn tolerance and patience in realizing that everybody has a voice and it’s important that everybody gets an opportunity to use their voice.” To register for Wednesday’s Laser Tag Party, $5, for like-minded youths 13 and up, contact Sue Rennie at suerenniemail@gmail. com. Roar 2013 (Reaching Out with Arthritis Research) is an annual public education event presented by the consumer advisory board associated with the Arthritis Research Centre of Canada. The centre is dedicated to improving the lives of people with arthritis through research and the advisory board takes an active role in arthritis research decisionmaking by offering personal insight into the needs that exist for patients, and acts as a bridge between the researchers and the general public. “The overall goal of the event is to disseminate the latest knowledge on the latest research on arthritis,” says West Vancouver resident Céline Pitre, a centre board member. Pitre, 59, who was diagnosed with osteoarthritis 10 years ago, will serve as the event’s MC. Roar has been held for the last eight years. “The purpose of the event is to talk to people with arthritis, their support group, their family members, their friends, so that everyone can learn about the challenges of people living with arthritis,” says Pitre. The 2013 edition of Roar is being held Saturday, May 4 from 10 a.m. to 12:15 p.m. at the Milan Ilich Arthritis Research Centre, 5591 No. 3 Rd., in Richmond. Community members interested in the topic, though unable to

Seniors’ advocate’s independence questioned

LEGISLATION has been introduced by the B.C. Government to create the country’s firstever provincial seniors’ advocate.

It is not yet known when the position will take effect or who will be appointed to the role, but at least it’s done. Let’s see if the government got this one right. The seniors’ advocate isn’t going to help Auntie Jane get a refund on her toaster. Not every senior will be happy with that approach, but given the number of seniors in the province, it would be impossible for the office to take on trying to deal with personal complaints. Instead, the office has been structured to look at systemic issues and to make recommendations to government to improve the welfare of seniors. The legislation defines seniors services very broadly to include prescribed programs, services or systems of support, in relation to health care, personal care, housing, transportation or income support that are used by or associated with seniors. It’s a pretty broad mandate. A public consultation on the role and function of the seniors’ advocate took place over the spring and summer of 2012.

Older & Wiser Tom Carney

The preferred option that emerged from the consultation process was to establish the Office of the Seniors’ Advocate as independent from government and the legislature similar to the B.C. Ombudsperson, the Auditor General of B.C. and the B.C. children’s advocate. A number or individuals and organizations stressed that without this independence, the position would not have the voice or legitimacy the position requires. News that the seniors advocate will be appointed by government came as a surprise and a disappointment to most of the observers following this file. At a recent all-candidates meeting sponsored by the North Shore Services to Seniors Coalition, I asked incumbent MLA Ralph Sultan, who served as the Minister of State for Seniors, about that decision. Sultan acknowledged that the preference that came out of the public consultation process was for an independent office. Sultan disagreed with the suggestion that the office lacked independence and would not

be able to hold the government accountable. He argued that the legislation to create the Office of the Seniors’ Advocate promotes the advocate’s ability to advise the government in an independent manner. He noted that the advocate may report to the public in any manner and on any matter pertinent under the act. He also noted that the minister must release any reports or requests received from the advocate in a timely way. The legislation allows for the establishment of an advisory council and further allows the advocate to engage in activities like research. Sultan cautioned those in attendance not to give away the powers of elected representatives, including opposition MLAs, to those who are not accountable to the legislature. What he didn’t say, but what is obvious, is that given the beating the government has taken over the last 12 years from the aforementioned independent advocates, the idea of adding another one to the mix was about as appealing to government as bringing back the HST. For me it’s not the status of the advocate that is important, it’s what happens with the reports once they are delivered to government that counts. The fact is that advocates can investigate and make recommendations, but only government can implement changes. Advocates need to hold the government to account but when the independent advocates of the legislature are viewed by the

The Incredible Lightness of Simpler Have you ever looked into the mirror and wondered who was staring back at you? Believe me it happens to me frequently. I feel like time trotted along at a leisurely pace until I hit 30. Kids, family and career seemed to put my life into warp speed. The years from 30 to 50 all seem a bit of a blur. I now find myself wanting to be a little selfish with how I spend my time. This spring I looked out at the garden of my house. My usual response would be to plan this year’s colour scheme.Well, things have changed. I looked at the garden this April and could only think of the work ahead. I want to simplify and carve out more time for myself. Yoga, spin class, running and book club…bring it on! How to simplify? Go smaller. Do 2 people (actually 3… my kid feels no obligation to fly the nest because it’s quite comfortable thank you very much!),

anyway do 2 people really need 2500 square feet and a yard? The key to “downsizing” is all about community. So what are your options on the North Shore?

The key to building your bliss is deciding how you want to live day to day. Lower Lonsdale has become an exciting hub of activity as the city works to build a sustainable community for all those living and working in what will be one of GreaterVancouver’s best neighborhoods. It offers some of the most reasonable condo prices on the North Shore. I love this area because

government as political adversaries, not a lot is likely to happen with their reports. I think that is what has happened here. The recent report on seniors care from the Ombudsperson, for example, was absolutely scathing, but it has been mostly ignored by the government. I suspect that a report that is delivered by an advocate who works collaboratively with government and other agencies and reports annually to the minister would have a better chance of being implemented by the government of the day. But that is a

minority view. For those who think we would be better served by having an independent seniors’ advocate, time may be on their side. At the same coalition meeting referenced earlier, Craig Keating, the NDP candidate for North Vancouver-Lonsdale, stated that should the New Democrats come to power in May, they would change the current legislation to make the seniors’ advocate independent of government.

Excellence Awards The West Vancouver Chamber of Commerce held its President’s Dinner and Business Excellence Awards April 18 at the West Van Yacht Club. The Citizen of the Year award went to John Barker. West Van Florist won Best Big Business of the Year, and Options Solutions took home the award for Best Small Business. Ambleside Dermedics won the Best New Business award and Ferris Fare Ltd./Food with Initiative (maker of Monkey Toast) won for Best Innovator. Dr. Nick Seddon of Dundarave Dental Clinic took home the Young Entrepreneur award. For this year’s awards, there were 48 nominations in the six different categories. Lights, camera, community action Mulgrave School’s Grade 10 film students had the opportunity to partner with the West Vancouver Chamber of Commerce for their annual President’s Dinner and Business Excellence Awards. Student filmmakers were divided into groups of three and assigned a business or person that had been nominated for an award. The goal was to create a one-minute documentary profiling the nominee’s accomplishments. The student films were judged professionally by a member of the local film industry with the top three films receiving prizes. According to film teacher Lian Anson, “All the students involved agreed that they learned valuable skills, met some great people in the community and enjoyed a rich, authentic learning experience.” All 20 films were showcased at the April 18 awards ceremony. The top three filmmaking team award winners were as follows: Gold — John Barker by Boyd Borjiet, Omar Salemohamed and Connor Stanton; Silver — Nurse Next Door by Jena Roper, Angie Joannou, Daniela Martin and Ashleigh Kearns; and Bronze — DavidsTea by Curren Page, Richard Jung, Stephen Lynch, Eduard Manea and Marcus Hann. Best customer experience West Vancouver builder G.D. Nielsen Developments Ltd. has been awarded the Avid Custom Builder Award — Best Customer Experience Among Custom Builders in Canada. The company was recognized for providing the best customer experience among all custom builders in Canada represented in an Avid survey. The company received an Avid Index Score of 292.3 points (out of a total 300 points) as rated by their customers. One hundred per cent of their homebuyers said they would recommend G.D. Nielsen Developments to family and friends. An article profiling G.D. Nielsen Developments and its survey results will be published on avidbuilder.com, an online resource for housing news and information. Now in its 10th year, the Avid Award is an industry-sponsored award program honouring the best builders in Canada. Small winery releases welcomed

Notable Potables Tim Pawsey

I’VE followed the fortunes of B.C.’s smaller wineries with interest for some time now, so when an invite to drop by and check out some new releases from a handful described as “wine farmers” popped into my inbox I was all over it. There’s no shortage of winery associations these days, but this was a bona fide gathering of “hands-on,” more genuine vintner-grower, getyour-hands-in-the-soil types brought together by Vancouver wine-about-town guy Kurtis Kolt. These wineries are more focused than some others on truly representing the vineyard in the bottle. And they had no shortage of decent drops on offer as part of this spring release tasting. Most of these are small lot wines that won’t last long, so your best bet is to track them down right from the source or at private stores

specializing in B.C. wines. ■ Fairview Cellars “C2” Cab. Sauv. Cab Franc 2010 From the man who does just about everything himself (except, perhaps, pouring the concrete for his new cellar) comes this well-balanced blend that offers no shortage of plushness in the mouth but with good structure from the Cab. Coming in June, but with only 220 cases made, given the value it represents, you’d best get your name on the list early ($24.90, 89 pts.). ■ Orofino Scout Vineyard Syrah 2011 This Similkameen winery’s stature continues to grow, and no wonder. I could point you to any number of wines, from a lineup of single-vineyard smalllot Rieslings to a respectably earthy Pinot Noir. But it was this meaty, spicy, peppery and really minerally Syrah that grabbed my attention ($29. 91 pts.). You’ll want some, as you might also the 2010 Passion Pit Cabernet. ■ Road 13 Mitchell’s Vineyard (Summerland) Gewurztraminer 2012 Winemaker JM Bouchard has his hands full with just about as many wines as any winery I know. And the list isn’t getting any smaller, as Road 13 embarks on an expanded small lots program. As Bouchard says, most folks will go ga-ga over this gew, which is why I like it too. It packs a serious lychee and rose petal punch on A recent tasting that proved popular featured small B.C. wineries.

the nose, with extraordinary ripeness and texture on the perfumed palate, with a hint of ginger ($24 90 pts.). ■ Little Farm Blind Creek Similkameen Rosé 2012 I’ve been tasting more than my share of rosés over the last few weeks, and this one from Alishan Driediger and Rhys Pender is a standout. We love its serious dry style, bursting with cranberry and herbal notes, earthy undertones and a crisp, zesty, chalky end. Grab it at $24 (90 pts.) if you can. And while you’re at it, or even before, don’t miss Little Farm Chardonnay 2012, with focused apple and stonefruit

plus underlying tropical notes and a decidedly mineral streak that tells you it’s very much from the Similkameen Valley (92 pts. $29.90), but only 25 cases. ■ Van Western Vineyards Voluptuous 2008 From one of Naramata’s most consistent estate producers comes this complex and well-balanced Merlot (67 per cent) Cab Franc (33 per cent) blend that’s loaded with black fruit and spices wrapped in a plush opulence, but with some definite backbone with cassis and toasty notes before a lengthy close ($29.90, 90 pts.). info@hiredbelly.com

TRAVEL VICTORIAN MODEL VILLAGE DESIGNATED WORLD HERITAGE SITE BY UNESCO IN 2001

Saltaire a breath of fresh air for workers John Masters Contributing Writer

SALTAIRE, England —“Paternalism” isn’t a word used much anymore, at least not in a good sense. But 150 years ago things were different. In the 1840s the Industrial Revolution was gathering steam in England, making some rich, but worsening the conditions of many more, who worked long hours for low wages and lived in squalor. In Bradford, near Leeds in northern England, the wool trade’s growth had made the city one of England’s fastestgrowing, but an 1845 report on the conditions its 10,000 wool combers endured found that a typical apartment was, “a miserable cellar in which four persons work, and five . . . sleep; four feet below the surface. Walls black with damp — stench intolerable.” Moral decay — drink, drugs — vied with physical illness — cholera, tuberculosis — to see which could carry off workers quicker. Paternalism was a response. In an effort to improve conditions, proprietors took their workers on days in the country, where the air was fresh. Others provided allotment gardens, or schools, or better accommodation. The most idealistic built whole villages. Titus Salt, a Bradford textile merchant who’d done exceedingly well, was in the front rank of the paternalists. In 1851 he began building a town that would ultimately be home to 4,500. He called it Saltaire and named its streets after his 11 children. In 2001, little changed from its founder’s day, it became a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Visitors today can walk its neatly laid-out streets and admire the touches that made it special: its unique Italianate/ Victorian architecture, its leadglass windows, its outhouse in every backyard. They can marvel at the gigantic mill that once held 1,200 looms and turned out nearly 30 kilometres of cloth daily. Saltaire was built of brick and made to last. Although the last loom stopped in 1986 and the workers are long gone, houses and mill have both found new purpose. The homes have become popular with young professionals, who use the Saltaire train station to commute to jobs in Bradford or Leeds (10-20 minutes away). That has led to a blossoming of cafés and shops along Victoria Road, among them a store selling Chinese antique furniture and the Don’t Tell Titus . . . Bar & Restaurant. (Salt, a teetotaller, wouldn’t allow liquor in Saltaire.)

The chief delight of the town, though, is Salt Mill. Like the rest of the World Heritage Site, its architecture has Italianate flourishes: square cupolas, rounded windows and a symmetrical façade — six storeys high and 166 metres long. The mill now showcases one of the world’s largest collections of works by David Hockney, a Bradford lad made good. More than 60 of his pieces are on display in the huge main-floor gallery/art shop. Upstairs are a spacious bookstore and two restaurants. More retailers — a rug merchant, an interior-design store — are scattered through the immense building. The only drawback is that Saltaire is so successful as a going concern that none of the workers’ homes has been restored to its 1850s condition. That, and something to show how other millworkers lived, could suggest that paternalism — this 19th-century version — was no bad thing. If you go: For more information on Saltaire visit www. saltairevillage.info. For information on travel in Britain go to the Visit Britain website at www. visitbritain.com.

And they called it puppy love Canine Connection Joan Klucha

I came down the stairs into a sunlit living room and found all of my dogs lounging in the earlymorning rays. All three of them lifted their heads to watch me descend the stairs and I could see the contentment in their faces. As I became more aware of each of them looking at me, I felt an overwhelming amount of love for them. When I looked at Piper’s dark brown head resting on his front feet in the warmth of the sun my heart strings pulled as I noticed the grey hairs around his eyes. There now seemed to be a few more that have appeared around his muzzle.

He has added such joy to my life. Zumi tires easily now and the morning sun seems to rejuvenate her before she starts her day. Today, her bottom lids hung heavy and for the first time I noticed — or maybe she allowed me to notice — that she was showing weariness, probably after many years of feeling the need to guard her pack mates and me. Then there is Raider, whose young face is filled with wonder and curiosity with an expression that says “So what are we doing now?” His impossibly flexible body was contorted in ways only a puppy could bend as he attempted to feel the heat of the sun on his stomach. One might say that I have an “overly” healthy love for my dogs but, as the saying goes, my dogs are not my whole life, but they make my life whole. When I began training dogs almost 20 years ago my life goal wasn’t to become a dog trainer. It just fell into my lap as something to do because I didn’t know what else to do. I didn’t have any “control issues” I needed to work out through controlling dogs, nor did I expect to make loads of money as an entrepreneur. I began working with dogs because I

fell in love with them. I began to see the world through their eyes and that is when I fell in love with the world. Over the years, I have questioned whether dogs can express love to people. Research suggests that dogs do not have the emotional capacity for love. They are creatures of habit and comfort and learn that certain behaviours get rewarded and certain ones don’t. Therefore they learn to express behaviours that get them the greatest rewards. What we see as love and affection is simply dogs showing learned behaviours that we interpret as love. But as someone who has spent 20 years living and working closely with dogs, I can say there is more to these creatures we share our lives with than conditioned responses to a stimuli. When you ask any dog person what they love about dogs their first response is “they love unconditionally.” That means to love without

judgment, conditions or expectations. Dogs give to us and ask for nothing in return but are grateful for whatever they receive. Their exuberant wag of a tail for the simple gesture of a pat on the head is evidence of that. They are the ultimate teachers and the purveyors of unconditional love. If animals without a spoken language, that we can understand, can teach us about unconditional love simply by being in our presence, how can they themselves not feel it? For example, in order for one person to sense anger from another person, that other person must be feeling angry. So we can argue that if we feel unconditional love from our dogs, then our dogs do in fact express the feelings of unconditional love. But you all didn’t need me to tell you that did you? LACHLAN Fontaine of the North Shore Twins prepares to unleash a rocket throw from his spot on the hot corner. The third baseman wowed scouts with his hitting and arm strength at a winter prospects camp and now he’s likely to get picked in June’s MLB draft.

IN terms of his amateur baseball career, North Vancouver’s Lachlan Fontaine has already blasted his way around first, second and third base and all that’s left now is to see if he gets waved in to make the final charge home.

The North Shore Twins third baseman and Sutherland secondary Grade 12 student is in the midst of a whirlwind year that will culminate with the Major League Baseball draft in June when his name, in all likelihood, will be called out by a big league team. Fontaine first broke out in a big way last summer when, after putting together a solid season with

the Twins, he exploded on one magical day in the B.C. Premier Baseball League playoffs. Facing a doubleheader of must-win games during the league’s final four tournament, Fontaine hit three home runs and collected 11 runs batted in in two games to propel the Twins all the way to the championships final. “It kind of went by really fast, it seemed like it wasn’t real,” Fontaine said, recalling that monster day. “The whole team was intense about the games,

it was just a different feeling playing those couple of games. Everyone was just more intense about the game.” The wins put a cap on amazing streak for the Twins that saw them rip off nine straight victories to make the provincial final after just barely squeaking into the playoffs. It was a fun stretch of baseball, said Fontaine. “It felt like we could just go out and we weren’t going to lose,” he said. “It felt like we could win every game and we were expecting to win every game. There wasn’t really a thought that we would lose any games and we played like it too.” The Twins eventually lost the final but the swing in the team’s fortunes from also-rans to runners-up left everyone feeling good. Fontaine, in particular, kept See Infielder page 32

Wrestlers pin down age-group national titles SIX wrestlers from the North Shore’s Capilano Wrestling Club fought their way onto the podium while the club’s juvenile women grabbed the team title at the Canadian Cadet/Juvenile National Championships held April 5-7 in Saskatoon.

Adrienne Lu, a Grade 12 student at Sentinel secondary, set the standard for the juvenile women’s (age 17-18) team by winning gold in the 80-kilogram division. She was joined on the podium by Elphinstone secondary Grade 12 student Alex Radcliff who placed second in the 70-kg class. The team posted a total of 21 points at the meet, outclassing the second place Saskatchewan Junior Huskies who racked up 16 points. In juvenile men’s action Oscar Bulaqui took home the national title in the 46-kg division. The Grade 11 student at St. Thomas Aquinas will represent Team B.C. at the upcoming Canada Summer Games. Oscar’s younger sister Karah Bulaqui also scored gold, winning the 40-kg class in the cadet (age 15-16) girls’ division. The younger Bulaqui will also hit the mat for Team B.C. at the Canada Summer Games. Ciara DiSalle, a Grade 10 student at STA, scored another medal for the Capilano club with a second place finish in the cadet girls’ 49-kg division. Rounding out the North Shore medals was Kai Sackville-Hi, a Grade 9 student at STA, who finished third in the 58-kg cadet boys division, competing as a 14-year-old against wrestlers up to 16 years of age. — Andy Prest

the streak rolling into the winter when he made a name for himself at a Perfect Game prospects camp held in Arizona. Competing against other elite young players, Fontaine earned the title of No. 1 Top Prospect at the camp, setting the event’s record for infield throw by uncorking a 90 mile per hour toss across the diamond from third to first. Scouts raved about his hitting and he evened fooled around on the mound for one inning, wowing onlookers with a fastball that pushed 88 miles per hour and a nasty slider.

The magic continued earlier this month when Fontaine earned a spot on Canada’s National Junior Team, joining the squad for a stint in Florida where they faced off against rookie ball teams representing MLB clubs like the Atlanta Braves, Detroit Tigers and Toronto Blue Jays. By the end of the camp it was clear that Fontaine was showing up clearly on the radar for the 2013 draft — 29 of the 30 MLB teams have contacted him and had him fill out predraft paperwork. On top of all that, the 17 year old has been fielding calls from colleges and universities on both sides of the border eager to scoop him up if his draft number isn’t high enough or a pro contract isn’t signed. Baseball is unique in its draft structure with high school grads eligible to be picked. The prospects then either sign right away and head off to rookie ball or they don’t sign and then go to college with the potential to re-enter the draft a couple of years down the road. Fontaine has covered all the bases,

registering with the NCAA and taking SATs so that he could play university ball if his preferred choice, the pro route, doesn’t work out this summer “The (pro teams) try to persuade you away from school a little bit,” he said with a chuckle. “I tell them I want to play pro ball but, I mean, whatever happens I’m comfortable going to school as well. We’ll see what happens.” It’s a unique experience for these young players but also a stressful one. Just back from Florida and playing his first regular season game with the Twins on Thursday night, Fontaine struck out in all three of his plate appearances. His batting eye still needs an adjustment after switching from the 90-plus mile-per-hour heaters he was seeing while playing for the junior national team to the 75 and 80 mileper-hour stuff the pitchers in the BCPBL are throwing him. “Going from 95 miles per hour to 75, it’s just completely different — you have to change your swing a lot, your whole approach,” said Fontaine, visibly peeved that he didn’t produce for his team in a 2-1 loss to the Vancouver Cannons. It’s a tricky transition, parachuting back into his hometown team after taking time off to play with Team Canada.

On top of being counted on as the home team’s cleanup hitter, the whole circus of college coaches, pro scouts, endless travel and online rankings is a lot to handle, particularly considering the normal high school exams and graduation that all other kids face. “It just gets a little overwhelming at times, you’ve just got to forget about it at times and just go out and play the game you grew up loving and try to forget about everything else. . . . If you think about it too much you’re going to try too hard to get that hit or throw the ball 100 miles an hour across the infield. I didn’t do that today so I’ve just got to focus on that for next time.” No one sees the stress more than Lachlan’s father Bob, a retired West Vancouver police officer who has been trailing his son around the continent to the various showcases and camps. “It’s a lot of fun for me — because I’m retired I can go down and watch him play, I can travel with him. Well, I don’t travel with him, I travel behind him,” he said with a laugh. “There is stress there but he’s handling it well. I try to help him as much as I can.”

Draft adds stress to already busy baseball schedule From page 32

Bob’s been watching his son play since Lachlan raced out of the house as a threeyear-old toddler to hit off a tee with his older brother Elliot. Playing the game now is what keeps all the outside craziness in perspective for his son, said Bob. “He loves playing baseball. That’s his life, he just loves playing it. In all the years that he’s played ball he has never complained about practice, about going to a game — never.” Life will become simpler again once draft

day has come and gone. Lachlan said he won’t be doing anything special on the day — he’ll go to school as usual — but he will keep a keen ear just in case one of those big league scouts wants to call him with some good news. “I’ll have my phone on,” he said, “loud.” ••• The Twins will be back at home for their next eight games, starting today with a doubleheader against the Victoria Eagles. Game 1 gets underway at 11 a.m. at Parkgate Park with Game 2 scheduled for 1:30 p.m. For a full schedule visit northshoretwins.com.

Beatrice Marjorie Vittery July 4, 1917-April 20, 2013

Beatrice Marjorie Vittery (nee Rankin), born July 4, 1917, passed away peacefully in North Vancouver at the North Shore Hospice on April 20, 2013. Lovingly remembered by her children Joan Mitchell (Brian), and Alan. Noni was special to her grandchildren Nikki, Jennifer, Alanna and Alistair and many nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her brother Robert (Grace); sister Emma (Henry) Wackenroder, and brother Gordon (Eileen) of California. Bea was “Mum” to many special friends, especially Maureen Woodrow, Gayle Guest and Anne Nkomo. Thank you to Erlinda Quadrante for her overwhelming devotion in caring for our mother. Bea was born in Nokomis, Saskatchewan to William Rankin of Edinburgh, Scotland and Mary Jane Rankin (Greaves), of York, Ontario. Her parents were homesteaders and wheat farmers then came to Vancouver in 1920. After spending the wartime years in the Queen Charlotte Islands, Vancouver Island and Vancouver, she and husband Ralph (RCAF-Marine Section) settled in North Vancouver in 1947 where she helped with the family business, Vittery Marine Services. She enjoyed a wonderful family life skiing on Hollyburn, Grouse and Seymour Mountains as well as other areas in BC, especially Rossland. Spring, summer and fall, or any day with wind, was spent sailing from West Vancouver Yacht Club on the ‘Ivanhoe’ and later, the ‘Anna Marie’ around the coastal waters. Inbetween, whenever the opportunity allowed, she travelled the oceans of the world to anywhere a freighter or cruise ship would take her. She never lost the travel bug and had her final voyage to Alaska in 2007 on her 90th birthday. She was a devoted member of the Signus Club of Vancouver, a charity that helped the families of children afflicted with cerebral palsy. She struggled with many medical issues in the past eight years but, as usual, she took it in her stride, never complaining. As with the bright colours that she loved, she brightened everyone’s world with happiness as she sailed through her life as perfect as we all knew her. As per Bea’s request, there will be no service. Private arrangements will be announced at a later date following cremation. Donations gratefully accepted in her memory to BC Cancer Agency, BC Heart & Stroke Foundation, Lion’s Gate Hospital Foundation or any charity of your choice. For those wishing to share a memory of Beatrice, please go to www.hollyburnfunerals.com Hollyburn Funeral Home 604-922-1221

Harvey is survived and dearly missed by his sister Maureen; children Beth (Brian), Ray (Karen), Harvey (Helen), and Sam; ten grandchildren; and four great grandchildren. Born and raised in North Vancouver, Harvey left his home town only to serve in the navy during WWII. Post war, Harvey returned home to work for Home Oil and Pacific Brewers Distributors while raising his family, the pride and joy of his life. The Marshall homestead, renown for its social gatherings, was home to many and welcomed all. Family and friends are invited to attend a memorial service at 2 pm on May 4, 2013, at First Memorial, Boal Chapel, 1505 Lillooet Road, North Vancouver. Last hurrah to follow at the family homestead. ANDISON, Mary Louise October 28th, 1925 - April 22nd, 2013

Embraced by the love of her family, our dear Mum passed away peacefully on April 22nd, 2013. Predeceased by her beloved husband Alec, her cherished son Bruce, and her dear grandchildren Brooke and Kyle. Survived by her children, Jan Pope (Ken), Robin (David), Scott (Margot), and Neil (Vera), her grandchildren Bruce (Shelly), Erin (Geoff), Lee (Jocelyn), Blake (Katherine), Cole, Alexandra (Rob), Evan, Dhana, and her great-grandchildren Jacob, Justin, Aureilia, Abigal, Emily and Owen. Married in 1943, Louise and Alec began raising their family in Alberta before coming to North Vancouver in 1951. After a brief return to Calgary, they settled in West Vancouver, where Louise lived from 1963 to 2002. After being a full-time mother and homemaker for several years, Louise followed her dream to become an educator and received her Early Childhood Education Diploma from UBC in the late 1960s. In 1972 she began working at Chelsea House Preschool in West Vancouver, becoming owner in 1975. In 1978, along with her daughter Jan Pope, she established Chatham Preschool at Eagle Harbour and St. Francis-in-the-Wood. In 1983, Chatham Preschool moved to Cypress Park School where Louise taught until 1990. She remained active in its operation until its closure in 2007. Louise loved children and teaching and she touched the lives of countless children and their families over the years. Louise was an active member of the the community, becoming involved in many volunteer activities, including being a founding member of SPEC, early recycling initiatives and assisting the elderly. She shared a love of music and travel with her husband, Alec, and together they toured the world. She continued with her interests after Alec’s death, and joined the Keynotes Senior Choir and often attended the symphony and travelled accompanied by her dear friend, Susan. From 2002 until her passing, Louise divided her time between Victoria and North Vancouver, and was always an integral part of her family’s lives in both cities. She is forever loved and will be greatly missed by us all. We would like to extend our heartfelt thanks to the wonderful staff of the North Shore Hospice for their endless compassion and loving care. We will always remember and appreciate everything that was done for our mother and for us. As requested, there will be no service at this time, but a gathering of family and close friends will be planned for the early summer. In lieu of flowers, we would appreciate donations in memory of Louise Andison to: North Shore Hospice Society P.O. Box 54019, 1562 Lonsdale Ave., North Vancouver, B.C. V7M 3L5

PERKINS, Virginia

Jan. 31, 1931 - April 13, 2013 It is with deep sadness we inform you that our dear mother, Virginia (Ginny) Perkins, passed away recently. Mom had been struggling with advancing Alzheimer’s disease and succumbed after a valiant fight. She is survived by her sons Bruce and Geoff, her daughterin-law Betty, and her four grandchildren - Graham, Jessica, Cassidy and Jack. Ginny was from the east, born and raised in Toronto, but fell in love with Vancouver. She moved here shortly after graduating from the University of Toronto with an advanced degree in social work. She soon found work and met her husband Ron, who predeceased her in 1998. The family grew up on the North Shore living in both North and West Vancouver. Ginny was an active and intelligent woman who loved giving back to the community. One of her favourite activities was volunteering at the West Van Library. Her love of art brought her to volunteer at the Ferry Building Gallery as well. Ginny had a strong faith and drew a lot of strength from her church. Travel was also never far from her heart. At a terrible loss to us all, Alzheimer’s took its toll. Ginny’s last years were at Sunrise in Lynn Valley where the staff were beyond superb. The family is so grateful to them for their support and care. Goodbye Mom, God bless you. A celebration of life will be held for Ginny on May 3rd at 2:00 PM. The location is the First Memorial Boal Chapel, 1505 Lillooet Road, North Vancouver. In lieu of flowers, a donation may be made in her memory to the Alzheimer’s society.
