Dog walkers warn of WV cougars

Trail users say large cats have been stalking them BRENT RICHTER brichter@nsnews.com

North Shore professional dog walkers are warning the public of likely cougar activity in the trails above the British Properties. There have been numerous close calls in recent weeks, especially on the District of West Vancouver’s Ballantree Trail, according to Barry Rueger, spokesman for the North Shore Professional Dogwalkers’ Alliance. “We tend to be up in that area a lot,” Rueger said. “The walkers have pretty much got it covered. They know what’s up. It’s just that over the holidays, there are likely to be a lot more of the general public hiking up there and taking their dogs up to go for walks. It’s probably good for them to know there might be an animal up there that could be a risk to them.” Stef Launay, a dog walker with Release the Hounds, has had two frightening encounters. Three weeks ago she was walking a group of dogs when one of them bolted off trail after he caught the scent of something interesting. When she caught up with the dog, she found a disturbing scene. “It was a fresh, huge, deer carcass — totally intact, its face and everything, except its

The dogs however were more interested in rolling in a “stinky” white residue that had been sprayed in the area, similar to how cougars mark their territory, she noted. Then a week later, another incident. “Obviously the dogs noticed it first and they just started freaking out. They roared up ahead and

They may get challenged to the odd inebriated boxing match for doing it, but police are zeroing in on drunk drivers anyway. The North Vancouver RCMP took more than three dozen drunk drivers off the road in one night, according to a release

from the detachment. Two drivers are facing criminal charges and 18 motorists are looking at 90-day roadside prohibitions stemming from a crackdown on Friday, Dec. 12. “Especially during this holiday season police want motorists to be safe and happy, free of any impaired driving consequences,”

stated North Vancouver RCMP Supt. Chris Kennedy in the release. On average, 86 British Columbians die every year due to impaired driving, according to a release from the West Vancouver Police Department. North Vancouver police took 53 impaired motorists off North Shore roads between Dec. 3 and Dec.

12, including one Alberta driver who allegedly challenged police to duke it out in a boxing match, and another impaired motorist who is accused of driving his 10-year-old daughter three blocks for an errand. Police also handed a three-day immediate roadside prohibition to a See Operation page 5

Kia’s design is more than shapes, lines and surfaces. It is a sharing of unexpected new and pleasant experiences. To ensure that the all-new 2015 Kia Sedona exceeds the highest standards of design, technology and quality, Peter Schreyer — one of the world’s top 3 automotive designers — thoroughly oversees every aspect in its design direction. For Schreyer, each element should bear the ‘absolute purity’ in order to create the design as a whole. The ‘simplicity’ philosophy is at the core of Kia’s creative language. Sightings not confirmed From page 1 started screaming in the middle of nowhere,” she said. At first, she thought it may have been a coyote or something else but then she heard a growl come from the bush. She quickly gathered the dogs and started heading back down the trail but whatever made the growl continued following them, growling twice more on the way. She later cross referenced the sound

she heard with an audio recording of a cougar’s growl she found online. “I wanted to make sure I knew what it was and it was exactly what a cougar sounds like: very, very low. Very cat-like,” she said. “It was pretty incredible, to be honest.” Rueger himself had a similar experience recently as he was coming back down the trail. “You hear it, following along beside you. In my case it was uphill above us for a good 20 minutes,”

Rueger said. “Basically, I got all (the dogs) in quite close and we moved more quickly and made a heck of a lot of noise. That’s pretty much the limit to what you can do.” Despite the worrying incidents, the province’s Conservation Officer Service hasn’t been able to confirm the cougars. “We’ve had no confirmed kills or any confirmed sightings of cougars,” said conservation officer David Stanford. “It’s possible. I wouldn’t

say there aren’t cougars in the area because it is a wildlife corridor. There are bears, cougars, coyotes, bobcats — all that kind of stuff.” Anyone who sees a cougar or evidence of one is encourage to call the province’s hotline at 1-877952-7277, Stanford said. The district also asks anyone to report dangerous wildlife so staff can put up signs, or even close trails if necessary, according to West Vancouver spokesman Jeff McDonald.

Operation Red Nose needs volunteers From page 1 driver who was allegedly impaired while taking his sixmonth-old infant and eight-year-old child to the airport. But while police are making sure impaired drivers don’t stay behind the wheel, the volunteers at Operation Red Nose are doing their best to make sure impaired drivers never get behind the wheel in the first place. The North Shore arm of the national volunteer organization is currently looking for safe, sober drivers to help get inebriated people home on Dec. 31. “We’re always short on New Year’s Eve,” noted Jim Godey, co-ordinator for Operation Red Nose on the North Shore. The organization probably needs about 30 volunteers to help bring in the new year, according to Godey. The service is for anyone who feels they can’t drive safely, either due to alcohol consumption or fatigue.

Operation Red Nose doesn’t take reservations, nor do they demand payment. “We are not able to turn anybody down for lack of money,” Godey says. “If you’ve got no money left we’ll still drive you and your car home.” The organization accepts donations, and any money raised by Operation Red Nose goes toward local youth programs. Drivers looking to volunteer with Operation Red Nose can call 778-288-8996 or send an email to volunteer@nsorn.org.

Permanent record W

hat do you get for someone who doesn’t understand this newfangled email thing? Apparently, the post of Minister of Technology, Innovation and Citizens’ Services. That’s the job Amrik Virk was handed after news broke that the former minister of advanced education was involved in a secretive pay scandal at Kwantlen Polytechnic University. The former police inspector was part of the Kwantlen board that sidestepped provincial rules in paying $120,000 in moving and research expenses to a vice-president who was already getting a ceiling-hitting salary of $170,000. Virk’s perpetually hazy memory cleared only after incriminating emails surfaced. Those emails stayed buried because Virk claimed to be unable to access his old account while “co-operating” with an

MAILBOX

investigation into the affair. As you might expect, the NDP has called for Virk’s resignation, and as you also might expect, B.C.’s silver medal party is being ignored. The NDP doesn’t know how to win elections but that doesn’t mean they’re not right once in a while. In the big scheme of things, paying an executive an extra $120,000 might not be that bad, as long as you’re not a Kwantlen student shelling out tuition money. But the Liberal government’s decision to cast a blind eye on the whole mess is galling, particularly for a party that tirelessly touts its record on fiscal responsibility. As long as the Liberals are in power, the future of our province hinges on their honesty and willingness to disclose potentially embarrassing information. It’s fine that Christy Clark rewards loyalty, as long as she occasionally penalizes incompetence as well.

Consider waste for a skunk’s sake Dear Editor: I am sure no one purposely disposes of plastic cups and lids for cold drinks in such a manner that they can harm skunks, but it does happen. Skunks, like most wildlife in our backyards, have a keen sense of smell and like sweets as much as the person who purchased the cold

drink. This results in them sticking their heads into the containers, which can end up around their necks with no hope of easy removal. We have seen two skunks in the last year running through our yard with plastic around their necks. The first one was loose enough that with some ingenuity we were able to hook the plastic, lift

the skunk up slightly and he slipped out free. The second one, we could tell, had the plastic embedded into its neck. After a trip toWildlife Rescue in Burnaby and numerous attempts to trap the skunk should it return, we did trap and release an unhappy cat, and finally succeeded in getting the one we wanted

with, thankfully, no spraying. We took her toWildlife Rescue in Burnaby where she was operated on, given antibiotics, worried over because of a bone infection, and hopefully will recover and be released back to the wilds of the North Shore. This rescue association is a phenomenal resource in MetroVancouver but sees

animals too often suffering from a similar fate and not all will survive. So I ask you to think twice (about) how you discard these plastic cups and lids. Cut them up if you can, bring them home to recycle securely in your bins and save a skunk.Thanks. Nick Petryszak NorthVancouver

VIEWPOINT

Montage sparks memories of home It’s that time of year when night after night there seems to be a movie on TV designed solely to get all of us crying our eyes out. They’re called classics for a reason. It’s aWonderful Life, The Muppet Christmas Carol, and, of course, Corner Gas: The Movie. Wait, Corner Gas?Yeah Corner Gas.There were no Christmas ghosts or angels in the movie spinoff of the folksy Canadian sitcom (although, awesomely, a robot versus werewolf fight), but CTV gave it a primetime spot about a week before Christmas, broadcasting it across Canada head-to-head against the big Christmas movies. The Corner Gas movie doesn’t have anything to do with Christmas — in keeping with the sitcom, it doesn’t really have much to do with anything — but that didn’t prevent me from feeling some seasonal mistiness as I tuned in. It wasn’t the stirring, Jimmy Stewart-esque performance of show creator Brent Butt that got my emotions running. It was, in fact, the opening credits. As they rolled by, the camera cut to a series of beautiful aerial shots of the wide-open Prairies. Power lines. Grain elevators. Small-town crossroads. And whooo boy, the canola. I’d deck the halls with that yellow crap any day. By the time the little montage was finished I was swimming in a field of emotions. And no, I wasn’t delirious or drunk.Well, maybe a little drunk — it’s kind of a mandatory thing

Laugh All YouWant for watching Corner Gas. Pilsner, anyone? Folks who didn’t grow up on the Prairies won’t really get this. (The grainfed nostalgia, I mean, not the Corner Gas movie itself. Although city slickers probably won’t really get that either.) I grew up out there on the flatland, and seeing those shots took me right back to those wide and wild lands. Those images got me thinking. I spent all of my childhood Christmases in Alberta and Saskatchewan, and though I’ve lived on the West Coast for 10 years now, five of them on the North Shore, I still feel the pull of the Prairie winter at Christmastime. Now that I have kids of my own I’m torn even more. In the past we’ve taken them on the often treacherous trip over the mountains to visit family, but this year we stayed in North Van. My kids are growing up with traditions completely different than mine. They’re much more likely to be holding an umbrella than a toboggan on Christmas morning. They’re North Shore kids. And, the odd canola flashback aside, I’m

becoming a North Shore kid too. There was one event, something that happened this year, that made me feel more North Shore than ever. I imagine many others feel the same way. It was the memorial for Tim Jones. I didn’t think my then three-year-old son would be able to sit quietly for what was bound to be a long ceremony, so I didn’t bring him along. But he needed to know what I was doing and where I was going. (He always needs to know. He’s like a worrisome father and I’m his teenaged son.) I told him that we were celebrating a strong man who meant a lot to this community. I didn’t know just how much Tim Jones and North Shore Rescue meant until I arrived at the parade and saw the sidewalks of Lonsdale Avenue packed four or five deep. As I later waited in a parking lot to watch the service on a big screen, I kept running into people I knew. Some, like me, were relative North Shore newcomers, while others had grown up with Tim Jones, played on the same high school football team. All of them made me feel welcome. It seemed like a quintessential North Shore moment, minus the uncharacteristic sunshine. We all shielded our eyes from that sun when the NSR helicopter took off to take Jones up for one last

trip into the North Shore mountains. Back at my house my son, who is now four, has a toy helicopter he loves. Last week — just a day after Corner Gas got my Prairie roots stirring — my son was zooming his helicopter around the house, rescuing his toys from perilous predicaments. “Guess who I am,” he

said. “Tim Jones!” My younger son, not yet two years old, got an umbrella for Christmas. He freaking loves umbrellas. And the boys go absolutely crazy for sushi. Not much call for sushi in Saskatchewan. I guess old traditions fade while new passions start to blaze. As we head towards another new year,

here’s hoping we can all remember where our roots are planted while at the same time look ahead to mountains waiting to be climbed. Aw heck, here I am getting all mushy again.Too many movies I guess. Where’s the damn Pilsner? Happy NewYear, and all the best in 2015. aprest@nsnews.com

Neighbours continue long tradition Cul-de-sac celebrates 25 years of sharing meals CHRISTINE LYON clyon@nsnews.om

Few things in life are certain, but the residents of a North Vancouver cul-de-sac know they can count on a homecooked meal, a tacky gift exchange and good, neighbourly fun at the end of each December. Saturday, Dec. 20, marked the 25th consecutive year the families on Theta Court have gathered for a progressive Christmas dinner. The quiet street, tucked behind Dorothy Lynas elementary in Deep Cove, is lined with just 16 houses, most of them built in the late 1980s. Christine Thomas and her husband John moved into their home in 1989. She recalls the first time she and her new neighbours met up for an impromptu Christmas party. “We sat at the bottom of the street and had hot chocolate and a big bag of

pressies for the little ones on the street,” Thomas says. Ellen Muirhead and her husband Peter had also just moved in. The couple previously lived in an area of Waterloo, Ont., where all the homes had identical floor plans. The residents there would hold progressive dinners, a style of party that moves from house to house over the course of the evening. “We just really liked that idea and we came out here and we didn’t have any immediate family out here and so it’s just a really nice way to connect with our neighbours,” Muirhead says. “Everybody was really keen on it.” The Theta Court dinners started out as three-house safaris: appetizers at one residence, a sit-down dinner at the second, and coffee, dessert and a cheesy gift exchange at the third. For the last decade, though, the parties have been scaled back: a buffet dinner at one house and an after-party at

But last Saturday, to mark a quarter century of keeping the tradition alive, the party on Theta Court returned to a threehouse affair, complete with a sit-down feast for an expected 26 guests. Former neighbours and grown-up children who have moved away were also invited to

drop in. “Of the neighbourhood, we’ve got 16 homes on Theta Court and there’s still 12 original families living here,” says Thomas, who quickly adds that new residents have all eagerly joined in the annual celebration. There have been

countless memorable moments over the years, like the time all the husbands on the street decided to give their wives a break from cooking and prepared salmon Wellington. “It was fantastic,” Thomas recalls, noting that same dish was on the menu

this year too. Meanwhile, during the hectic transition from house to house, it’s not unusual for Christmas ornaments and illuminated lawn decorations to go “missing” from one residence and mysteriously appear down the street later on in the evening. Asked what has kept this Christmas tradition going for 25 years, Thomas says she and her neighbours just like each other’s company. “We’ve helped each other out and always been there to watch out for our kids as they grew up,” she says. “Even so, we haven’t been on each other’s door steps all the time. We’re close friends, but we’re not living out of each other’s pockets,” she adds with a laugh. By Thomas’s count, 39 children have called Theta Court home since the cul-de-sac was built, and while most of them are grown up and moved out, she is buoyed by the recent arrival of a young family across the road from her with three children under the age of six. “We’re starting again now with the little ones on the street, which is great.”

When Antonio Sauro, Doug Grisdale and Rob Parrott opened Mangia E Bevi in 2007 they wanted their restaurant to give back to the community. Cancer was a shared experience amongst the partners; all their families had been touched. Doug’s mother and Antonio’s mother-in-law, Daphne Grisdale had died from cancer in July 2006 and Rob Parrott’s 10-year old daughter Julia had been battling cancer for 3 years. From this, BACIO, which means “kiss” in Italian, was developed to support the fight against cancer. Since 2008 BACIO has raised $235,000 benefiting onconology research at BC Children’s Hospital and the Lions Gate Hospital oncology clinic.

The District of North Vancouver played Santa Claus for the Novaco daycare in Norgate recently, issuing a $44,000 grant nearly a year after a fire gutted the community hub. The grant should help North Shore Neighbourhood House, which runs the daycare, get shovels in the ground to start a rebuild within six months, according to NSNH executive director Lisa Hubbard. “We’ve received a lot of donations of toys and equipment, we’ve got service clubs that have helped us, the community has helped us, now the district’s helping us, and at the end we’re going to get a beautiful, great daycare,” Hubbard said. At a December meeting, council unanimously supported the one-time grant, which will be held in reserve until NSNH completes raising funds for the new daycare centre. Insurance money was insufficient to pay for a new daycare after a suspicious fire gutted the daycare’s three modular buildings on Dec. 28, 2013. The blaze resulted in a critical loss for a vulnerable community, according to a district staff report. The facility, which also operates as a community gathering place, is crucial in helping provide health and

In April, City of North Vancouver council unanimously supported the federation’s low-income housing subsidy proposal to the province, passing a resolution that was in turn endorsed by the Metro Vancouver board. resiliency among people struggling to make ends meet, according to the report. Despite raising $110,000 for a rebuild at a North Vancouver Chamber of Commerce gala, NSNH is still short on the cost of a rebuild. The total budget to rebuild the centre is $465,000, according to a staff report. After spending some of that money on demolition and security, NSNH needs to pick up another $257,000 to finish the job, according to district staff. Hubbard is hopeful they can raise the money through government grants and raising funds in the community. “I wish the process was a bit quicker than it is,” she said. The daycare has been serving approximately 15 families while operating out of a temporary location at Norgate elementary, but parents are anxious to see a new centre built, according to Hubbard. The news of district funding was very welcome, according to Hubbard. “We’re just thrilled. It helps us greatly speed up the process.” While the previous daycare was in a poor state of repair at the time of the fire, the new centre will be purpose-built, according to Hubbard. Novaco daycare had been open since 1973.

Under the current program, rent supplement covers the difference between 30 per cent of a co-op member’s income and the full rent charged to other members. “Our philosophy is that someone shouldn’t be paying more than 30 per cent of their income to put a roof over their head,” said Jackson. Monthly rent at the Mount Seymour Park Coop is approximately $750 for a one-bedroom unit, and up to $1,178 for four

Many low-income families, seniors and people with disabilities living in NorthVancouver housing co-ops face an uncertain future. Federal rent subsidies for 150 North Vancouver households (and other low-income co-op members across the province) will end as early as 2021, according to the Co-operative Housing Federation of British Columbia. The federation has launched itsYou Hold the Key campaign ahead of the expiration of federal funding, asking its members to lobby the provincial government for a rent-geared-to-income program for low-income coop households. “We are saying in our campaign that housing is a provincial responsibility,” said federation spokeswoman Fiona Jackson. The federation estimates it would cost the province approximately $20 million to fund a co-op rent supplement program by 2020, a figure the association said “pales in comparison to the social and financial costs of homelessness.” In November, members from North Vancouver’s nine housing co-ops, comprising some 465 households, met at the Mount Seymour Park Co-op to learn more about the imminent changes to the rent subsidy program. Each housing co-op has its own 35-year federal operating agreement, which started the year it was built.

YOUR NORTH SHORE GUIDE to ACTIVE LIVING

Wheely? Does size matter? Pedal Pushers

Question: I know there’s a difference in wheel sizes between certain types of mountain bikes and city bikes, but what do the differences mean and why should I care?

SHOULDER PAIN Columnist Shaun Karp shares exercises to help alleviate discomfort. page 15 HEALTH NOTES page 15

Answer: First let’s go over wheel sizes. Mountain bikes were originally designed with 26inch diameter wheels. Back in the 1980s the thinking was that to climb hills a rider could transfer more power per square inch to the wheel surface by reducing the traditional bike rim size. In addition, the resulting shorter overall bike length was more adept at clearing short-turning radii. The only downside to this design is that it is less efficient on flats. But then, it is called mountain biking. The standard for road bikes is the larger 700c wheel size for exactly the opposite reasons. A longer overall bike length provides stability at speed and the larger rim size in combination with gearing reduces the amount of effort from the rider to achieve higher speeds. The ‘c’ in this system does not stand for centimetres. It stands for size ‘c’ in an obsolete French system in which ‘a’ meant skinny, ‘b’ meant not so

All Greek to most, I know. A couple of new standard wheel sizes have emerged in the mountain bike market. The 29er and the 650b (there’s that French again). The 29er is just that — a bike with 29-inch rims. These wheels are great at rolling over obstacles in environments where turning

radius is not such a huge obstacle. They also provide a higher bottom bracket, which means you don’t hit things as regularly. The effort to ride is similar to the 700c wheel size, but in the cushy two-inch knobby tire format. Twenty-niners attempt to blend the efficiency of the larger wheel size with the general inefficiency

of suspension. In some conditions, this works great — and many people would argue that in cross-country and all mountain situations, they are the bomb. However, downhillers might still prefer 26-inch rims for their fasttwitch directional change capabilities and because they allow for forks with more travel.

To confuse matters further, bike designers recently decided to split the difference, creating the 650b — a 27.5-inch wheel that rolls better than the 26-inch rim, but reduces the turning radius of the 29er. Got it? Hmmm. Why should you care? Well, you might want See Ride page 15

Keep ahead of shoulder pain Recent and chronic sufferers alike often imagine the entire cause of their shoulder pain to be excess joint strain, but the true culprits are very frequently poor posture and a weak, unbalanced back. Luckily, addressing these triggers can help keep you head and shoulders above your pain. Turn shoulders out more and in less Overuse of the arms can certainly cause problems, but one of the most common littleknown causes of shoulder pain is prolonged internal shoulder rotation. In

Shaun Karp

Personal Best this posture the back is stretched while the chest is compressed, giving the appearance of what is often called slouching. Many hold their shoulders this way when eating, driving or typing, and

several other common activities, like biking, golfing and cooking, virtually require this posture. With so much time spent in internal rotation, it is little wonder shoulder pain is so common. The primary antidote, of course, is externally rotating the shoulders toward a more neutral position. To achieve this posture, first stand straight with your arms hanging loose. Then rotate your palms outward so your thumbs point away from your hips, while also allowing your chest to rise slightly.Your shoulders should naturally move

into a healthier posture. You can use this trick throughout the day to reset your shoulders and avoid excessive internal rotation. When in doubt, stretch them out Active stretching is another key to undoing the damage of sustained internal rotation. There are many great stretchingbased fitness programs available, including yoga, pilates, and tai chi, and each includes the opening of the chest muscles through shoulder extension. Short on time? The doorway stretch is your best bet. Start by placing the inner elbows at shoulder height on both sides of a door. Next, move your chest forward to the comfortable limit and hold for 15 seconds. For an easier stretch, begin by placing your palms on the frame just below hip level instead. Either way, the stretch is felt across the chest and shoulders and can be

Health Notes

performed two to three times per day, or even once every few hours. Strong, balanced backs take load off shoulders Increasing back strength can also help reduce shoulder pain. There are many great back exercises to choose from, such as rows, bandresisted external rotations and prone thumb raises, but each is too often performed incorrectly to target mainly the upper back. This can cause muscular imbalances that can actually increase your shoulder pain. To ensure proper targeting of the middle back, keep your shoulders lowered during all back exercises. The natural tendency is to compensate for a weaker middle back by shrugging the shoulders up, so you might need to decrease the resistance level to avoid doing this.

to match the purpose of your riding with the wheel size. If you are riding around town for shopping, a larger wheel size might be just the ticket. Many city bikes come with the 700c wheel size to optimize efficiency. Some cruiser bikes come with the 26-inch rim, mostly to accommodate cushier tires that give a slower, but super plush ride. One of us toured and commuted for more than 10 years on a suspension-less mountain bike frame with 26-inch wheels. To boost efficiency, the skinniest, un-knobbiest tires that could

be found to fit the rims were used. They were called City Slickers. To be honest, that was so far back, there really weren’t any choices except road bikes and mountain bikes. Now there are so many options. One of us has a city bike with 700c wheel size for everyday riding to work, shopping and entertainment. She also has a 29er hardtail for off-road adventure touring. To buy it, she sold her full suspension 26-inch wheel mountain bike. She used it for three months as her everyday bike to break it in before a trip and it was a plush commuter.

When it comes down to it, maybe size doesn’t really matter after all. Find the bike you like — whether it has big or small wheels. Ride it! Then you can make modifications like changing tires, or gearing to suit your needs. Wheel sizes have their advantages and disadvantages, but none of them really matter if you don’t first like your bike. WORK

Energy stocks come with elevated risk Many of you have witnessed the dramatic drop in the price of oil and watched in awe as Canadian energy stocks have given up almost half their value since September. Investors like you want to know a few things, mainly, have we found a bottom yet in the price of oil? Is now a good time to buy energy stocks? Is now a good time to sell energy stocks? And who will take home the Season 7 crown of NBC’s reality TV show, The Voice? I’ll spare you any suspense in the interest of time and give you my shorthanded answers to each question proposed above: it looks like it, no, probably, and Craig Wayne Boyd. Before we go any further, let’s first recap what’s happened so far

Lori Pinkowski

Making Cents

this year within the energy complex. The price of oil peaked in the summer at more than $100 per barrel, but slowly began to fall in July. The drop was not dramatic though and we seemed to find a bottom around $90 a barrel in September. Why did the price come off? There were a few reasons. First, we saw extra supply come onto

the market from places like Libya and Iraq. This is simple economics 101 — increased supply, all else being equal, will put pressure on prices. Next, geopolitical concerns from places like Ukraine and Iraq (remember how ISIS was going to take Baghdad?) which were supporting prices, eased. The final blow came from a surge in the value of the U.S. dollar. Oil (and all commodities for that matter) is priced internationally in U.S. dollars, so when the U.S. dollar rises, it causes the price to fall. But oil did have one last life line. OPEC, a cartel of oil producers responsible for about a third of global oil production usually moves to support prices in times of weakness by cutting production to balance

out supply and demand, as they did in 2008. This time around OPEC, and the Saudis in particular, seemed more concerned with defending market share than the price of oil. Once OPEC formally announced they would not cut production to support prices, oil took another tumble. These factors were the catalyst for the decline, but the overarching theme for the weakness in oil is an oversupplied world. Put simply, the world is producing more barrels of oil each day than it’s consuming. The price action for oil is the market telling producers to get things in order, or in other words, get supply in line with demand. This is the fundamental basis for the old proverb, the remedy for low prices is low

NORTH S HORE BUSI NESS BOARD

prices. Lower oil prices will flush out a lot of the marginal producers from the market as they cannot produce oil economically at these levels. The U.S. shale formations will be the hardest hit, but this process will take place over a period of 12 to 18 months, and possibly longer. We reduced our energy exposure to essentially nothing in October and November and believe it’s still too early for investors. You may want to consider selling your hardest hit energy stocks for tax loss purposes, but be sure to check with your advisor and accountant before doing so. Energy stocks will rebound at some point, but we need to see some stabilization in the price of oil first. Furthermore,

the necessary process of supply destruction will not happen overnight. Energy stocks may be bottoming now in fact, but risks are still elevated and there are better investment opportunities out there. Remember, there is a large universe of investments and you don’t have to be in energy. Helping teens focus on fitness

ROSALIND DUANE rduane@nsnews.com

If they’re not active yet, the teen years are a good time for kids to start building fitness habits that follow them into adulthood. And a North Vancouver program aims to ensure they get off to a safe start. First Time Fitness is a program designed for teens who are new to fitness and weight training. “We just feel it’s part of our responsibility to help them create a healthy lifestyle and part of that is understanding (their) body,” explains Samantha Morrison, a recreation programmer with the North Vancouver Recreation and Culture Commission. The program is open to youth ages 13-17, and features about six participants in each group so the instructor can provide lots of personal attention.

Morrison says the program involves a lot of education and also some myth-busting since many teens are exposed to media with confusing messages about fitness and health. The certified kinesiologist who heads the class helps sort through the muddle. For six weeks, participants meet with the trainer for an hour and learn about core, strength, endurance, and stretching among other fitness topics. They also learn about effective and safe use of the weight room at the community centre. The instructor gives the participants a strong orientation of the weight room and how to use all the equipment. Sometimes youth don’t understand the mechanics of lifting, notes Morrison. For example, they may not know how to balance muscle development rather than just working on building biceps. Since young bodies are still

growing and developing, it’s important to be aware of lifting weights in such a way that doesn’t injure backs and joints as well. In addition to safe use of the weight room, youth are also introduced to weight room etiquette. The weight rooms are regularly used by many different groups, including young people, seniors, seasoned athletes, and novices, so knowing proper etiquette is important, says Morrison. The First Time Fitness program gives youth an alternative to screen time, she says. “It’s a bit like personal training and PE put together.” At the end of the program participants should feel confident to sort through fitness literature, and to have realistic goals for their fitness, explains Morrison. They should be able to understand general fitness terms like strength

and endurance, and understand how that translates into their workout. Learning more about fitness in general may also help participants choose other fitness and sports activities they may want to try. First Time Fitness starts again in January, and arrangements can be made for groups of friends who want to take the course together. In addition to weight room training, North Vancouver Recreation also offers other youth programs, including yoga and spin classes. There are a variety of membership options to choose from, and all classes have a $2 try-it offer in January. In addition, there are financial assistance options for those who qualify, and support options for youth with disabilities. For more information visit northvanrec.com.

Programs teach young yogis in WV ROSALIND DUANE rduane@nsnews.com

Cat, chair, cobra, cow, giraffe, tree and flower. These are just some of the names given to poses taught in yoga classes specially designed for kids. While you may be more familiar with downward facing dog, warrior and lotus poses, kids classes often incorporate animal and other child-friendly names to help young yogis learn different postures. It also injects some playfulness into the lessons. Although some of the names may be different, and there may be some animal noises added in, kids still enjoy the same exercises as an adult yoga class. “Kids do the same yoga as adults but there’s more playfulness,” explains Sadie Harvey, program coordinator for yoga programs for children and youth at WestVancouver Community Centre. Harvey, who has been doing yoga since 2000 and

nowadays is the idea of having self-awareness and self-esteem and selfconfidence and instilling that in children, and so I think yoga really speaks to that.” Fitness, flexibility, range of motion, focus, and stress relief are among the reasons

people do yoga, says Harvey. “For me it’s just a nice calm opportunity just to breathe, to connect with my body. And it really helps me relax,” she adds. TheWestVancouver programs generally see a mix of different types of kids, and Harvey says, “It’s a nice place for people to come together.” All equipment is provided, although some people prefer to bring their own mat, and drop-in rates are available. WestVancouver Community Centre offers child yoga programs for two different age groups: five to nine, and nine to 12. The new winter term starts in January, and will include a new location at Chartwell elementary called the Properties Family Hub, which is closer for families in the British Properties area than the community centre. The holidays are in full swing — I hope your turkey still tastes good here on Day 3. Here’s a tip: put gravy on everything. What other time of year can you get away with gravy waffles? Anyway, to help you soak up that last little bit of holiday magic we’re presenting Part 2 of our three-part North Shore sports year in review. In this issue we look back at the top moments from July to December. Dig in!

YEAR IN REVIEW Check outWednesday’s North Shore News for Part 3 of ourYear in Review in which we reveal our picks for the top 5 North Shore sports stories of 2014

July Those fancy mountains we’ve got here on the North Shore aren’t there just to look pretty — they’re also there to breed champions. North Shore riders cleaned up at this year’s Canadian Mountain Bike Downhill Championships held at Sun Peaks resort in July. Vaea Verbeek of North Vancouver led the way, winning a Canadian title in the elite women’s category. Other first-place finishers included North Van’s Daniel Shaw, who won the junior men’s (U19) division and Michael Mooney, who took top spot in the master men’s 50+ category. Silver medals went to North Van’s ColinYarrow in the master men’s 40-49 group and West Vancouver’s Henry Fitzpatrick in the cadet men’s (U17) division, while Martin Newman of North Vancouver scored bronze in the master men’s 40-49 division. ••• West Vancouver’s Susan Clarke can legitimately claim to be the fittest 5559-year-old woman in the world after winning that category at the CrossFit Games held in July in Carson City, Calif. The annual competition pits amateur athletes from around the globe against each other with participants all completing the exact same exercises in an effort to qualify for the big show. The competition at this year’s Games was heated — literally. Temperatures in California were pushing near 40 C on the competition field. “The equipment was smoking hot,” said Clarke. “I think everybody has burns on their hands from

of 2014 July-Dec.

the pull-up bar. Literally it was so hot that it blistered our hands.” This was the 55-year-old audiologists first trip to the Games. Clarke led a strong contingent of North Shore masters competitors at the event, including Debby Brouwer, who placed ninth in the same division that Clarke won as well as Terry Peters and Richard Roston who finished sixth and seventh, respectively, in the masters men 60+ division. August North Vancouver gymnast Scott Morgan landed on the podium four times at the Commonwealth Games in Glasgow this summer, claiming two golds, a silver and a bronze. The Flicka Gymnastics Club member won gold on back-toback days to finish off the gymnastics competition, first winning on the rings and then flying back to the top of the standings in vault. “It was spectacular to get up there on the podium and hear the Canadian anthem,” said Morgan. “It’s something you dream about as an athlete.” Morgan’s silver medal came in the floor event while his bronze came in the team competition as he helped lead the way for the Canadian men as they finished third behind England and Scotland. Morgan wasn’t the only North Shore athlete to hit the podium in Scotland. Swimmer Emily Overholt, then just 16-years-old, helped her team win silver in the 4x200-m freestyle relay. ••• The North Shore Twins came about as close as you can to winning a championship in August without actually scoring the coveted gold medals. The Twins fought their way to the final of the B.C. Premier Baseball League championship tournament in Whalley where they fell in extra innings to the No. 1-ranked Langley Blaze. Trailing 2-1 and down to their final out in the

The Twins then seemed destined for the win after scoring in the top of the ninth, but Langley loaded the bases in the bottom of the ninth and then won it on a two-run double from Dakota Currey. “Tears was all I had left after yesterday,” Viswanathan tweeted

following the game. “We showed what it means to be North Shore Twins . . . we went out as lions.” ••• Marcos Baghdatis won his second Odlum Brown VanOpen tennis tournament in August, showing off his strong defensive game and sumptuous drop shots to beat Farrukh Dustov of Uzbekistan 7-6 (6), 6-3 in the final. The Cypriot, who has beaten the sport’s best in his long career,

first won the VanOpen in 2009. Injuries dropped his ranking in 2014 so he needed to pick up some points at smaller events, but he also had fond memories of 2009 in his mind when he decided to come back to the Hollyburn Country Club hosted event. “The vibe,” he said, when asked what he liked about the event. “The vibe of the people and the atmosphere here. events, there’s so much energy going on throughout the week here.” In the women’s final Australian Jarmila Gajdosova topped Ukraine’s Lesia Tsurenko 3-6, 6-2, 7-6 (3) in a match that started quietly but built to a dynamite finish capped off by a third set tie-breaker. “I just kept fighting and in the end I came back,” Gajdosova said after accepting her championship trophy. “I knew she was going to be a tough match.” ••• North Vancouver’s Cole Keffer helped Canada score a thrilling 17-16 win over the four-time defending champs from the United States to claim gold at the World Junior Ultimate Championships held in Italy in August. In the final the underdog Canadians took a slim lead and held it throughout the contest. The Americans, however, eventually tied the game 16-16 forcing universe point (that’s ultimate’s exciting way of saying next point wins). And then, just like that, it was over — one quick throw and then a long

bomb to Canada’s Darren Wu who soared above two U.S. defenders to grab the winning point. “You could hear the crowd go crazy over his catch, ” said Keffer. “It’s kind of surreal. The moment that we won was one of the best moments of my life. And then after, thinking about it, it’s a surreal feeling — we’re the best team in that age group in the world.” ••• It was an early Sunday morning in August but the crowd that packed into the Capilano Rugby Club, 140 strong, was fired up to see some World Cup history. Three of their own — Andrea Burk, Hilary Leith and Mandy Marchak — were in the starting lineup as Canada was taking on England in the final of the Women’s Rugby World Cup. Canada started out well, taking it to England in the first 10 minutes of the game. The tide soon turned, however, as the experienced and hungry English — they lost in the final of the past three World Cups — slowly pulled away, building an 11-0 lead in the first half. Canada fought back to make it close before a fast and bruising run from Emily

Scarratt — a dominant player throughout the game — sealed the win for England and ended the greatest World Cup run in Canadian rugby history one step short of the ultimate prize. The party inside the Capilano club mellowed as the clock ticked down to the final whistle but once the game was over, all that was left was an enormous amount of pride for the players and team. “For us it’s just overwhelming to get those three on the team,” said club president Ken Robinson. “That was absolutely spectacular. I know full well how much work they’ve had to put in.”

September North Vancouver’s Lauren Wilkinson helped Canada win silver in the glamour event of the 2014 World Rowing Championships, the women’s eights. The Canadians finished second behind the United States at the championships held in Amsterdam, Netherlands. The 1-2 finish mirrored the podium placements for the two countries at the 2012 Summer Olympic Games. “It’s not what we

One day later Griffin made his debut with the NewYork Islanders. “It means my parents are busy,” joked Sam when asked what it meant for him and his brother to make their debuts on backto-back nights. Sam was sent back to the WHL after a brief stint with the Sabres while 20-year-old Griffin has split his time between the Islanders and the

AHL’s Bridgeport Sound Tigers this season, picking up one assist, a plus-one rating and six penalty minutes in eight games with the big club. ••• The Carson Graham Eagles and Handsworth Royals battled in an alltime classic Buchanan Bowl that came down to the wire with Carson securing a 49-48 victory. fourth quarter, scoring their final major in the last minute of play to make it 49-48. Handsworth elected to go for the win with a two-point convert rather than kicking for a tie, and their bid for the end zone fell short. Carson ended up going the furthest of all the North Shore senior football teams this season, winning their opening round playoff game before losing to Mission, the eventual silver medalists, in the quarterfinals. ••• North Shore/Burnabybased Mountain United Football Club scored their first ever Canadian Soccer Association National Club Championships medal in October and it came from a surprising source. The club’s U17 boys won bronze at a national tournament they weren’t even supposed to be at: the U-18 Cup held Thanksgiving long weekend in Surrey. The team, comprised completely of underage players for the U18 division, was given a late invite to the tournament after Newfoundland and Labrador dropped out. The Mountain squad more than held its own against older teams, blasting its way into the medal round and securing bronze with a penalty shootout win over Alberta after a 0-0 tie in the thirdplace match. North Vancouver’s Dzenan Bezdrob scored five goals in the tournament, earning a share of the Golden Boot award. November The North Van Wolf Pack racked up an incredible 17-game win streak that spanned all of October and most of November. The run for the PJHL junior B team started with an 8-1 win over Port Moody Oct. 1 and didn’t end until a 4-1 loss to Richmond Nov. 29. “It was just getting everybody to buy in,” head coach Matt Samson said about the streak. “We have good players — they’re highly skilled and can get us out of trouble. But I think now we’ve just been working on really getting

It’s little things like that, and then getting everyone excited to know that we have a shot at winning it this year and making sure that guys are having fun when they come to the rink every day and know that we’ve got to keep pushing ourselves.” Heading into the holiday break the Pack sported a 24-4-0-2 record, sitting two points behind Richmond for top spot in the league while having played three fewer games. ••• The incredible, improbable run of the Sutherland Sabres senior boys soccer team came to an end in November with a 3-0 loss to Surrey’s Panorama Ridge in the provincial AAA final at Burnaby Lake Sports Complex West. The magic began in 2013 when the Sabres — a AA-size team that hadn’t won a North Shore title at any level since 1997 — made the bold move of jumping up to the top AAA

ranks and commenced mowing down opponents, winning the North Shore banner before going on to claim the provincial title with a thrilling overtime win against Burnaby Central. Most of the players from that team returned this year and the Sabres stayed hot all the way to the 2014 provincial final where they finally met their match. Kerman Pannu put on a virtuoso performance for Panorama Ridge, scoring a golden hat trick to give the Thunder their first ever provincial AAA title. The Sutherland run may have been a surprise for outside observers but it wasn’t for those close to the team. “A lot of these boys we’ve coached since they were five or six years old,” said coach Bill Mahon. “We knew when these guys were going into Grade 8 there was a good nucleus here. It didn’t come as a surprise.” ••• The Argyle Pipers senior girls volleyball team put on a powerful display to win the B.C. AAAA title in See Manny page 30

Manny makes it back onto World Cup podium From page 29

Cranbrook in November, dominating the competition to claim the school’s first ever provincial volleyball banner. The Pipers, boasting an entire starting lineup made up of Grade 12 players, only dropped one set while bashing their way to seven straight match victories to take the title. The clincher came in a 3-0 sweep over the No. 2-ranked Riverside Rapids from Port Coquitlam. “This team has been a really special team from the get go,” said Kathy Finch, Argyle co-coach along with John McGowan. “It’s very exciting for these girls to win the school’s very first provincial volleyball banner. . . . The girls have earned their spot on that trophy for sure. They put a lot of time into volleyball.” Outside hitter Anna Price was named tournament MVP while outside hitter Kendra Finch and middle blocker Sarah Haysom were named to the tournament’s first

all-star team. ••• North Vancouver’s Manuel Osborne-Paradis came flying out of the gates to start the 2014-15 World Cup ski campaign, scoring silver in the season-opening downhill held in Lake Louise, Alta., Nov. 29. The man known as Manny actually tied for second with France’s Guillermo Fayed, just 14 hundredths of a second behind winner Kjetil Jansrud of Norway. The podium placing was Manny’s first in nearly five years, his last top-three coming with a silver in Switzerland in January of 2010. The national team veteran was thrilled to make it back onto the podium. “It feels really good,” he said. “I was nervous today because I knew I could podium and this was the best chance I have had in a long time.” ••• Moments after he won his first ever Canadian Cross Country Running championship Nov. 29 in

Vancouver’s Jericho Beach Park, North Vancouver native Chris Winter was asked how he was able to catch up to rival Kelly Wiebe in a frantic finish and pull away for the win. His response: “I unleashed the bear.” Recalling the quote later, Winter says he has no idea where it came from. “After you run 10 kilometres you’ve got a lot of adrenalin and endorphins going,” he said with a laugh while trying to come up with a few more exact words to describe how he chased down Wiebe in the final kilometre, sprinting through shindeep mud and snow to earn a narrow victory. “Honestly, I dug deeper than I ever have before.” With 600 m to go the runners were emerging from the sloppy course onto the grass of the home stretch where cheering fans, including a vocal crew of Winter’s family and friends, were waiting. Winter passed Wiebe with 500 m left and held to win by four seconds.

on Team Canada for the World Junior Hockey Championships for the second straight year. Last year Sam and older brother Griffin suited up as Canada finished fourth in Sweden. This year Sam, picked No. 2 overall in the 2014

NHL draft, was named an assistant captain and will be counted on as a team leader as the Canadians try to claim gold for the first time since 2009. The tournament will run Dec. 26-Jan. 5 in Toronto and Montreal.
