Vancouver police and emergency crews rushed to the crash at mid-span around 5:50 p.m. after a report of the rider colliding with an SUV came in. West Vancouver police assisted in closing the North End of the bridge and helping drivers already on the bridge deck get turned around and back to the North Shore. Officers had the bridge closed until almost 11 p.m. while investigators were on the scene. The exact cause of crash isn’t yet known but speed and alcohol are not considered to be factors. “It appears to be a tragic set of circumstances that led to the southbound rider coming off of his bike and falling into oncoming northbound traffic,” said Const. Sandra Glendinning, VPD media relations officer. “The driver of the SUV was not able to avoid the rider, has co-operated fully and we are not expecting any charges as a result of the collision.” Police are not releasing any information on the victim. — Brent Richter

3 charged for illegal tree cutting

AFTER a 15-month investigation, two North Vancouver homeowners and a North Shore-based arborist are facing criminal charges after they allegedly cut down a swath of trees in Capilano River Regional Park.

The RCMP opened an investigation on Feb.13 last year after Metro Vancouver, which owns the park, reported that 35 trees had been either cut or seriously damaged through

North Vancouver RCMP allege the homeowners hired the arborist to use his chainsaw to open up views of the West Vancouver waterfront. “It became apparent that the intended outcome, of course, was to increase their westward view from their homes and that was substantially increased by the limbing or cutting down of the trees,” said Cpl. Richard De Jong, North Vancouver

RCMP spokesman. The investigation took more than a year because of the number of different police resources needed to build a case the Crown would take to court. That included aerial photography, consulting with professional arborists, calling in the RCMP’s provincial forest crimes unit and assigning the case to the province’s environmental Crown prosecutor. Charged are homeowners Hooman Bozorgnia, 41, and Roger Mulloy, 54, as well arborist Jeff Hoff, 33, owner of Hoff Tree Services. See Tree page 3

WHEN they immigrated to Canada from the Philippines more than a decade ago, it was a family connection that initially drew Alvin Koh Relleve and his wife to the area.

Today, many of the same community connections are what continue to bring Filipinos to the area. Usually, “They know somebody here or they have a relative here,” said Relleve, a North Shore resident and a driving force behind North Vancouver’s annual Philippine Arts and Culture Festival. “The first need they have is the need to belong.” Many Filipinos will attend church to make connections too, he said. “They know they will find Filipinos there.” “The North Shore has a reputation of being a good place to raise a family.” The growing population of Filipinos on the North Shore is just part of the overall picture of immigration that emerged from a release of 2011 census information from Statistics Canada last week. Immigrants now make up anywhere from 30 per cent to 40 per cent of the population, with higher numbers of immigrants in both West Vancouver and the City of North Vancouver than the District of North Vancouver. That’s above the B.C. average of 28 per cent, although less than some other areas of Metro Vancouver. Those percentages are relatively stable compared to census figures from 2006 — although a change in the way data is collected makes comparisons difficult. In the City of North Vancouver, immigrants make up 37 per cent of the population, while visible minorities account for about 30 per cent. About 4,000 of the 17,760 people born outside the country arrived in the last five years. Those from Iran were the largest group, making up 18 per cent of the immigrant population. Filipinos made up almost 15 per cent of immigrants. In West Vancouver, immigrants now make up 40 per cent of the population, although that statistic includes people who immigrated from the United Kingdom many years ago. The other largest immigrant groups include those from Iran and China. Visible minorities make up 28 per cent of the population, with Farsi, Mandarin and Chinese the most common non-official languages spoken at home. See Voluntary page 5

Building a better bus exchange

THE Phibbs Exchange may get an upgrade — if TransLink can afford it or if the District of North Vancouver is willing to help pay for it.

The subject of the District of North Vancouver chipping in with TransLink for a $3- to $5-million improvement on the isolated Lower Lynn transit station was broached at a committee of the whole meeting May 13. TransLink is currently mulling the prospect of adding a park and ride lot, improving crossings at Oxford Street, and adding better lighting and weather protection to North Vancouver’s transit hub. The current facility is not big enough and while it is not dangerous it “certainly feels unsafe,” according to TransLink project planning manager Jeff Busby. The overhaul is intended to raise the feeling of security while easing access to the station, according to district transportation planner Tegan Smith. The notion of the district paying for a TransLink project was divisive, and according to Coun. Roger Bassam, amounted to downloading. “If we do come to the table with a contribution . . . how do we get credit for that, or is that simply a contribution in addition to road pricing, bridge tolls?” he asked. “The bigger issue here is that TransLink isn’t funded properly. They have too much responsibility for regional infrastructure . . . they should be providing bus services and exchanges.” Coun. Alan Nixon backed up Bassam’s stance, but Couns. Lisa Muri and Mike Little were less convinced. “I hate downloading, but at the same time I want

When a developer designs a building that features more height or density than the district customarily allows, the municipality sometimes asks the developer to pay a sum called a community amenity contribution. That money could be used to pay for the Phibbs overhaul, according to Little. “I don’t think our community would be offended

if we were doing upgrades in and around that site with community amenity contributions,” he said. The discussion was mostly in general terms, because exactly how much the district may be asked to pay was never mentioned. Council’s challenge is in determining whether paying something is worse than seeing nothing done, according to Muri. Each is facing one count of mischief over $5,000. If found guilty, they face a maximum of six months jail time and $5,000 in fines. Bringing the trees down, some of which were upwards of 145 years old, put the slope above the Capilano River and adjacent homes at risk of a landslide, wildfire and wind damage. How much Bozorgnia and Mulloy allegedly paid Hoff for the service won’t be revealed until the trial, if one is necessary, De Jong said. News of the charges is welcomed by Heather Deal, chairwoman of the Metro Vancouver environment and parks committee. “I actually went up with the crew and crawled up and down the slope looking at what happened and it was quite disturbing,” said Deal, who used to work in watershed restoration. “Some of these trees were probably around when Canada was incorporated and it will probably take that many years before they get back to the magnificent stature they used to have.’ While many are inclined to get angry over the loss of trees held in the public trust for private gain, the real victim is the surrounding ecosystem, Deal said. Metro Vancouver has already spent $26,000 out of pocket to clean up the site and do geotechnical assessments, and another $25,000 is budgeted for remediation. That will likely involve replanting the slope with trees and plants that will give the slope stability. “It’s a very steep, steep slope with fine material in the soil and it’s in a very wet zone, so we definitely need to make sure that soil is staying in place,” she said. But metro taxpayers won’t necessarily be left holding the bill, Deal added. “There is a possibility of looking to recover those costs through civil action and we also have the possibility of fining them under our bylaws of up to $1,000 per occurrence and that occurrence could be per tree,” Deal said. “We’re going to be following the legal proceedings very closely and making a decision as to what Metro’s best option is.” While the “disrespect” shown to the public and environment was disappointing, Deal acknowledged that most Metro Vancouver residents love their parks and would go to great lengths to protect them.

than 65 per cent of the clients her organization sees have a university education — although due to Canadian regulatory requirements, that isn’t always a lot of help in ﬁnding employment. One big change in the immigration statistics is the data now comes from a voluntary form — as opposed to a previously mandatory questionnaire. Statisticians acknowledge it makes the information less reliable. Jones shares the worries of some bureaucrats that the new voluntary forms are “counting out” some immigrants the forms are intended to register — and may lead to funding troubles down the road. “If your language skills aren’t high and that comes to your door, are you going to be ﬁlling in a voluntary form, in English, that’s multiple pages long?” she asked.

Relleve said many Filipinos on the North Shore work as caregivers, or in the health-care or food industries. Many of the more recent immigrants have come to Canada under the temporary foreign worker program, he said, with the eventual goal of becoming permanent residents and bringing their families to Canada. Elizabeth Jones, executive director of the North Shore Multicultural Society, said her organization has been busy, helping about 3,500 newcomers in the past year. Immigrants from Iran, China and Korea continue to make up the largest numbers of clients, said Jones. About a third of those people enter the country as skilled workers, a third come as business class immigrants and about a quarter come as family members, she said. More

Discussing downloading, Walton said those funding decisions are made by a handful of bureaucrats who work with the premier. “The decisions are made in Victoria,” he said. “That’s where the policy is made, we can’t change that by stamping our feet.” Like Little, Walton said he would consider chipping in under certain conditions. “If the deal makes sense, sometimes you have to hold your nose and take the deal.” TransLink is also working with the Ministry of Transportation and Infrastructure to improve the Trans-Canada Highway on-ramp used by buses coming from Phibbs Exchange, which has “quite limited visibility and sub-standard merging distance,” according to Busby.

HAT is it about a water view — or at least the prospect of one — that turns ordinary citizens into thieves in the night? The short answer in many cases is simply: money. According to MSN Real Estate, the difference between two identical homes selling in Colorado for $8 million was the lack of a view. The home without the view took three years longer to sell at $3 million below asking. The example is extreme, but a water view in West Vancouver likely adds a minimum of 10 per cent to the value of property compared to similar homes without. So a view corridor to the water represents a conservative minimum of $100,000 in value. The penalty for mischief over $5,000 is a maximum of six months

in jail and $5,000 in fines. Anyone see a potential problem in the penalty department here? Even if those who hire Midnight Chainsaws Inc. know the law at all, what are the odds they might suppose jail time is such an extreme long shot that they only need be worried about the fine. And when the possible cost of $5,000 nets a potential return of $100,000 or more, reward clearly outweighs the risk. One of two things need to happen so that those considering illegal tree cutting are deterred. Either the law is rewritten such that a fine can be levied for each and every tree cut, or the next time someone is found or pleads guilty to the crime, the judge does everyone on the North Shore a favour and imposes the maximum penalty as a deterrent — six months in jail.

Capilano motels serve an affordable function

Dear Editor: I was not surprised to see the District of North Vancouver council basically give the green light to Larco Investments to start the rezoning process in the Lower Capilano area (North Shore News, May 8). What is surprising however, is the scope of this development. Larco wants to build a “village centre” on the former site of the Capilano Winter Club. This part of Lower Capilano has sat vacant for more than a decade, and is admittedly a piece of land that could be utilized for

housing. Like most developers however, “a little seemingly ain’t enough,” as the plan is to rezone the whole area between Marine Drive and Fullerton Avenue, on both sides of Capilano Road. It seems that it is not just vacant land that is desired, but also land that is described as the home to a neighbourhood of “rundown motels.” If this is not the case of throwing the baby out with the bathwater, I don’t know what is. Just who is the judge that these are rundown? Motels on both sides of Capilano Road in this area are ones that many

friends and relatives frequent throughout the year when visiting. Although they are not the “high-end” variety, they serve a need for those not made of money who desire to stay on the North Shore while patronizing area attractions. Not all Grouse Mountain and Capilano Suspension Bridge tourists want to stay downtown, and many cannot afford to. With the loss of the Avalon Hotel a decade ago, and more recently the Lynnwood Inn, non high-end lodging is sorely lacking on the North Shore. Are travellers of modest

means no longer important? According to the developers, it seems not. To try and champion the needofvillagecentres,yetatthe same time denounce middleclass establishments like these motels is terribly hypocritical and short-sighted. Just as we are assured the people buying into any new housing here will not exclusively be “highend” (which remains to be seen), neither are all North Vancouver’s tourists. Larco is no different from any other developer. They want to take as much land as they can, and maximize a

proﬁt on it. There is enough land in the Lower Capilano area for them to do that in a particular space, and to retain at least some of these motels, none of which (on Capilano Road) seem very rundown to me. It seems developers have done a great job of convincing many, including district council, that they know what’s best for a certain area. It’s not too late to say “hold on here,” and have motels coexist with trendy “village centres.” If any establishments do become rundown, the public will decide quickly what stays and

Fish trumped residents for use of WV’s Memorial Park

Dear Editor: Thank you for your recent article on the streamkeepers of McDonald Creek. The helpful article seems a bit one-sided. It referred to this oncepretty park area as boggy and overgrown which is a tad deceptive. The wedding guests, picnickers, artists and reﬂecting seniors who used this area, do not consider this little oasis a bog. It was a reprieve until the ﬁsh-rearing pond arrived. This portion of

McDonald Creek was the only area of Memorial Park where locals could unwind in privacy, the rest of the park is quite open or road-facing. Now our little fishy friends, wondrous as they are, have come before taxpaying park users. Not satisfied with kilometres of marine research land on Marine Drive, the fish hatchery on Capilano Road or the numerous regional breeding streams, the fish have trumped locals and taken prime park real estate.

Apparently, the neighbourhood was canvassed for support. Many of the park’s neighbours heard nothing and were quite surprised at this development. For those who frequented this private sanctuary, for decades, it’s a harsh reminder that ﬁsh now trump park users. Perhaps more balanced reporting would have covered both sides of this “augmenting.” Maureen Storrie West Vancouver

Wrong place for PR towers

Dear Editor: The location of the condo towers proposed at Park Royal really puzzles me. Abutting Marine Drive at the busiest intersection in West Vancouver is hardly an appealing location to reside and the scale of the towers at this location seems totally out of character with the low proﬁle of the shopping centre. I’m not opposed to development, but these towers should be behind or on top of the mall, well back of Marine Drive. What a shame if the approach to West Vancouver showcases a mass of this scale that will do little to complement the curb appeal of the shopping centre. Don Weber West Vancouver

DOES stealing from taxpayers qualify as treason? Is it time for Canadians to demand an end to the farcical trough known as the Canadian Senate? Convened by the Constitution of 1867, we are told the appointed Senate exists to act as a house of “sober second thought” as Canada’s ﬁrst Prime Minister, Sir John A. Macdonald, said. The intention was that an upper house would give regional balance to the often lopsided powers of elected members of Parliament. In reality, for much of my 57-year span in this country, the Senate has been the butt of exasperated criticisms from people who see sparse attendance records, very little work of note to hold parliamentarians’ feet to the ﬁre and, with increasing

frequency, a disturbing lack of ethics on the part of its patronage appointees. The News editorial was right to begin its Feathering the Nest commentary with the words quoted at the head of this column. Those of you who were here during the ﬁrst days of the Reform Party on the North Shore may remember two of its rallying cries: “the West wants in” and “triple-E Senate.” Those two slogans were inextricably linked. Although the upstart party actually began in the basement of a Victoria home and not in Alberta as most people believe, the major trigger for “wanting in” was two-fold. Firstly, Albertans were angry with the National Energy Program being proposed by then

Arising out of that was the belief that a series of appointed senators had done nothing to redress the East versus West imbalance. The solution, reformers believed, was to have an Elected and Effective upper house that gave Equal representation to every region of the country — hence the notion of a triple-E Senate. Whether or not the perceptions of early reformers were justiﬁed is for history to determine. All I can do is speak for myself when I say that, for those involved in building that party, the motivation and work of North Shore members was sincere — the best of democracy at work. That the Reform Party, as it evolved through Preston Manning’s Canadian Alliance to the party’s eventual merger with the national Progressive Conservatives, has ended up with the scandals of today, is an insult to all Canadians. Last February, when Conservative members of the Senate forced Brazeau to step away from the Conservative caucus while domestic dispute allegations were being investigated, they claimed they were taking the action “to protect the dignity and reputation of the Senate and the public trust and confidence in Parliament.” Reputation? Do I have news for their ridiculous, delusionary egos! Pure and simple, the reason Harper sits where he does today and that four or more of his appointees have been able to indulge their (alleged?) self-gratification is because the honest work of thousands of innocent Canadians made it possible. Those Canadians lost their trust and confidence in Parliament long, long ago. Memo to senators: The reputation of the Senate is in tatters; has been for more than three decades. If you are not asked to pre-approve the prime minister’s plans before he implements them, then 98 per cent of the time you do nothing to modify or improve a bill after a government majority in the House of Commons has approved it. You achieve nothing of note and serve little purpose in today’s Canadian democracy. As one significant example: You have said nothing that suggests you plan to protect Canadians’ interests against Harper’s proposed 32-year long Canada-China Foreign Investment Promotion and Protection Agreement. In summary: You are a self-neutered, extremely expensive luxury we cannot afford. So I for one no longer hope for a Triple-E Senate. I want to see the Constitution opened up for revision and hope for two things to arise out of that: First, the Senate must be abolished — now. Second, I want the word “Responsibilities” added to the included Charter of Rights and Freedoms — complete with the clauses to support that addition. Yesterday, an apparently sincere prime minister, while saying nothing about Wright’s involvement, used the word “abolished” in referring the Senate. About time. And lastly, if the allegations against Brazeau, Duffy, Wallin and any others are proven, then I’d like to see the guilty parties punished to the fullest extent of the law — and that includes jail time where appropriate. When it comes to spectacular locations, Lower Caulfeild, sometimes referred to as Tiddly Cove, is hard to beat. The neighbourhood resembles an English Cotswolds layout and is surrounded by lush greenery and scenic ocean views.

Barb Lunter When the couple purchased their classic postand-beam style home 10 years ago it was in desperate need of renovations. Built in

1964, the home was updated in the 1980s complete with terra cotta ﬂoors. They decided to do a few small renovation projects but would wait until later to do the big venture. “We did what we could for a small budget but we focused more on small scale jobs and landscaping,” remarked the couple. Living in the home really gave the couple and their two boys a sense of how the house functioned and what was in dire need of change. The goal of this renovation was to have a modern beach house while still keeping the 1960s vibe.

So, with a design plan in hand and architect David Battersby who helped put the plan in motion, the renovation was off and running. First up would be to establish a proper front entrance, a full bathroom, shifting of a central staircase and a fully updated kitchen. The mid-section of the house was removed to match the rest of the existing rooﬂine and open up the main ﬂoor. The stairs were relocated to create a proper front entrance and windows were added to give views to the garden. In the kitchen, the couple

wished for a style that was simple and uncluttered. Materials were used to create a colour palette that generated a sense of warmth and indicated a modern appeal. “We had a tendency to be drawn to very high end kitchens; however, most were out of our budget so our cabinet builder was able to replicate a similar look from magazine photos,” added the couple. Plant your strawberries in a sunny spot Dig Deep

THE season of the garden is in full swing and as spring wanders along people are busily planting their gardens to provide interest, fragrance and ﬂavour. Arguably, the easiest and tastiest plant to grow has to be the common strawberry (Fragaria species). Strawberries are grown all across British Columbia, from Vancouver Island to the Okanagan to the Fraser Valley. B.C. strawberry producers grow about 25 per cent of all Canadian strawberry production or roughly 3 million kilograms of strawberries worth about $6 million annually. It is interesting to note

that Canadians consume more strawberries than we produce, requiring us to import more of those tasty berries from California, Florida, Poland and Mexico. It is also worthwhile noting that Canadian environmental and agricultural standards prevent our strawberry growers from drowning strawberries in pesticides, unlike other countries which rely heavily on pesticides, fungicides and herbicides for agricultural production. Most modern, commercially available strawberries originated from French breeding that crossed Fragaria chiloensis with Fragaria virginiana to produce a plant that optimized the virtues of both parents. Over the last century, American and Canadian breeders have developed many new strawberry cultivars to meet the consumer’s desire for more taste, bigger fruit and a longer fruiting season. Our ancestors originally ate the alpine strawberry (Fragaria alpina) and the wood strawberry (Fragaria vesca), among other species. Today there are four main groups of strawberry: June-bearing, ever-bearing, day-neutral and alpine

strawberries. June-bearing strawberries produce fruit once a year in June. Ever-bearing strawberries produce berries twice a year, occasionally more. Day-neutral strawberries produce berries every six weeks or so from June through September. And the alpine strawberries produce fruit once in July or August. The most commonly grown June-bearing cultivars are Hood, Totem, Benton, and Tillamook. Some of the most popular ever-bearing strawberries cultivars include Quinault and Fort Laramie. The most common day-neutral cultivars include Tristar, Tribute, Selva, Seascape and Diamante. Totem, the leading strawberry cultivar throughout the Pacific Northwest, was bred by Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada’s Pacific Agriculture Research Centre. The strawberry varieties Rainier and Puget Reliance were bred by the Washington State University breeding program. No matter the variety you choose to grow, all strawberries need the same conditions to flourish and produce their delicious fruit. Strawberries must have well drained soil that has been

thoroughly amended with organic matter such as well rotted manure or compost to produce healthy leaves and therefore abundant fruit. Chemical fertilizer should be used sparingly because it promotes soft leaf growth that predisposes the leaves to foliar diseases. Excessive fertilizer also forces leaf growth on the plant at the expense of fruit. Mulching the soil is also recommended for strawberries to prevent soil drying and plant stress. Full sun exposure provides the best fruit production. Full sun means at least eight hours per day; however, some strawberries will grow well enough for the backyard foodie if there are at least six hours per day of sun. Some growers ﬁnd that strawberries will have more ﬂavour when grown in areas with warm days and relatively cool nights. But that nuance should not prevent anyone from growing a strawberry or two in the garden here on the Coast. Keep strawberries well watered and moist during the summer heat but not waterlogged or they will rot and die. The soil depth you grow strawberries in should be

Grow strawberries in hanging baskets From page 15 at least 20 to 30 centimetres deep to provide a deep cool root run for the strawbs. If you cannot dig deep to develop a planting bed, then build up using stone or untreated wood to create raised beds to attain the required depth and drainage. Strawberries can also be grown in hanging baskets provided a rich moisture retentive soil is used to build the basket. A strawberry hanging basket is interesting, attractive and edible and it can be hung up instead of using ground space. Another easy way

to grow strawbs if space is limited is to grow them in containers or planter boxes. Growing strawbs in pots, planter boxes or baskets also keeps the plants off the ground and away from many insects pests like slugs, ants and other insects that like to eat the fruit. Over time, strawberries will produce runners that grow away from the parent. Once runners have formed at least a few roots, cut the runner off and plant it on its own to have more plants. And every three to ﬁve years strawberries should be divided, their soil enriched and replanting done to allow new growth

and plant invigoration to happen. Strawberries are one of the most popular fruits in the world and accordingly the most popular yogurt ﬂavour in North America is strawberry. Strawberries contain calcium, vitamin C, iron, carbohydrates, dietary ﬁbre and protein as well as being visually interesting and tasty. Each garden will host two or more visual artists and have a two-hour musical performance each day. MAY Day celebrations were a significant community event in West Vancouver from the 1930s to the early 1970s. The first official West Vancouver May Day celebration was held on Victoria Day, May 24, 1931. The tradition continued until 1973, after which the celebration was moved to the first Saturday of June and was renamed Community Day.

The West Vancouver Archives’ May Day collection includes approximately 400 photographs, a ﬁlm, original documents such as a decorated register of participants that spans the entire duration of May Days, programs, May Queens’ speeches, scrapbooks and the May Day committee’s records and correspondence. The material was collected by the West Vancouver Historical Society from a wide variety of donors and later transferred to the West Vancouver Archives. Earlier this year, the West Vancouver Archives was pleased to be awarded one of the ﬁrst grants funded by the successful sale of the West Vancouver Historical Society’s book, Cottages to

Strategies combat information overload

I have a simple question for you: how many email messages are in your inbox right now? The answer: it’s probably more than you can handle. I have reached the conclusion that email is the fount of all stress — well, one of the founts; there is death, taxes, environment, world peace, health etc. but email ranks right up there. Fact: email is just the tip of the iceberg. All of our technology is steadily gaining importance in our lives to the point that it is, in many cases, overwhelming individuals. We simply don’t have the skills to manage the incredible volume of communications that arrives daily to our computer, our smartphone and our tablets. We face the productivity paradox. The fact that the technology designed to make us more efﬁcient in fact now gets in the way of us actually getting things done. In his book, Getting Things Done, productivity expert Dave Allen speaks about the fact that an overwhelmed inbox leads to overwhelmed individuals. And all of the stress created by having a full inbox leads to a loss of some control in people’s lives. This often equates to stress, sleeping less, and a whole cascading series of negative impacts — all generated by email. We need to begin to develop strategies and techniques for dealing with information overload. Of course, it is complicated by the fact that we don’t have a single point of access to all of this information. We have our desktop computer, often a notebook, or tablet and smartphones as well. Each of these devices becomes, when it is in our hands, our main interface for communicating with the world. Syncing information between devices, choosing the appropriate apps to help us manage all of the information and learning to use the different tools becomes an important part of our day-today tasks. Unfortunately, the fact is, most of us don’t have the time, nor inclination, to learn to use the tools that could help us. We tend to install applications, and only learn them well enough to get the basic tasks done. We don’t

control over our chaotic lives. Where to begin? The answer is simple. Your email inbox. The average North American knowledge worker checks email 40 times a day,

take advantage of all of the great built-in functions that could actually reduce the amount of time we spend in communications, give us control over the information ﬂowing into our inbox, and help us gain a measure of

email once, and deal with it at that point. Reply to it, if it just takes three or four minutes to do the reply. If not, schedule it for your attention at a later time, ﬁle it away for future See Take page 35

With the exception of two-year-olds who believe they can take on the world, kids know this. Ask them who the best runner is in Grade 1 and they all know. And they tend not to judge, until an adult lines them up to choose a team with each team leader (the two children determined by the adult to be the most skilled at whatever sport) selecting back and forth one at a time until only the “losers” are left standing. Elite athletes are self-motivated From page 26 game. They will spend a great deal of their time choosing a team to make it fair because that’s more fun. “If you get Layne who is the best goalie, we get Duncan who is the best forward.” They are not interested in setting up a situation to centre kids out, they want a fun game. It’s a very different dynamic. I recently heard about a team coach who gave out small prizes to a select few after each game. And the kids were ﬁne with that. Why? Because he gave prizes for athletic ability in that game but also for a range of other related and important team abilities including great sportsmanship, good leadership in the locker room and helping other kids. He also rotated prizes so different kids got them on different weeks and in the end, every kid was recognized equally for his or her unique skill. It was brilliant. It was also controversial. While the kids loved it, the parents wanted every kid to get a prize every week. In my view that’s a mistake. It takes away the honour, the motivation and the excitement. If we give all kids, no matter whether they try or not, the same prize as the kids who work hard, we celebrate mediocrity. And when we recognize mediocrity, we get mediocrity. It’s that simple. Do we want our kids to discover their hidden talents and develop them or simply rest on their laurels by simply turning up? Recognition events that shame or put down kids are a bad idea. Recognition that recognizes kids for who and what they are and

their effort is fabulous. So what about elite athletes? Should parents and coaches push kids who seem to have special talent? A number of years ago, I chaired a panel with Karen Magnussen and Kathy Kreiner-Phillips. Karen Magnussen is a five-time Canadian champion figure skater and a world gold medalist who won a silver medal in the Sapporo Olympics in 1972. Kathy Kreiner-Phillips won gold in the 1974 World Cup in the giant slalom. She followed up two years later by taking gold in the Olympics in Innsbruck, Austria. Both women said that true elite athletes need no pushing. They have a sort of internal engine that causes them to do what’s needed to meet the standard of excellence required. They both told stories about getting themselves up in the morning and going for a run before asking their parents to take them to the rink or ski hill. Magnussen said that she would arrive at the rink so early she usually had to knock on the caretakers’ window to get in. So the message is, if you have to push your child, she is not an elite athlete. And let’s face it; few of us reach that pinnacle. Don’t be afraid of all competition. Challenge them, let them enjoy themselves, help them find their unique talent and have fun. New program recognizes junior orchestra players

AMBLESIDE Orchestra is launching a scholarship and awards program for its young members.

Awards will be handed out in the spring to members aged 14 to 25 based on their contribution to the orchestra’s activities during the current season. Scholarships will be awarded on a competitive basis in the fall to young members who audition before a scholarship committee composed of the conductor, concertmaster and an outside professional musician. Winner(s) will be announced at the orchestra’s November concert, and may be invited by the conductor to perform a solo work with the orchestra. WHILE recently perusing the list of winners in one food magazine’s “best of” awards, I was struck by an anomaly in the “Neighbourhood Gem” category. Although the restaurants listed were indeed exceptional, they were also expensive. None of them really fit the criteria of decent food and drinks for wallet-friendly prices. It seems there’s confusion over what belongs in this category, so let me clarify by providing an example that epitomizes a Neighbourhood Gem. I’m talking about The Corner Stone Bistro in Pemberton Heights. In the past couple of years there’s been plenty of ink spilled about the boxy, brick-red business (formerly called The Corner Store) and the efforts of its owners to get a food-primary liquor licence. Last November, Tracey Cochrane and Ian Rabinovitch were finally able to raise a glass of bubbles to celebrate because after much effort, a neighbourhood petition, municipal support, a name change and plenty of expert input, theirs became the first corner store in the province to get a liquor licence. We should all be celebrating this ever-so-slight loosening of our nanny-state liquor laws, because in the case of The Corner Stone, it means friends and neighbours can wander over to their neighbourhood gathering place on a Friday

Cheesy Spinach Gratin This is a delicious side dish with chicken or steak. 3 lbs fresh spinach 4 Tbsp butter Salt and freshly ground black pepper 1½ Tbsp ﬂour 1 cup homogenized milk or light cream ¾ cup grated Swiss or Fontina cheese 2Tbspﬁne,freshbreadcrumbs (easy to make in a food processor)

Stem and wash the spinach. Don’t dry it, just place it in a large pot over high heat with the water clinging to its leaves. Cook, stirring occasionally, until just wilted, about four minutes. Transfer to a colander and rinse with cold water to stop cooking. Drain and squeeze spinach gently in your hands to remove as much water as possible. Chop the spinach coarsely; in the same pot melt two tablespoons of the butter over medium-high heat. Stir in the spinach and cook until almost all of the moisture on the spinach has evaporated (spinach will start to stick to pan). Lower heat to medium, sprinkle the ﬂour over the spinach and cook, stirring, for about two minutes to cook the ﬂour. Gradually add two-thirds of the milk or cream, stirring and scraping bottom of pan.

live music. Given the size of the operation, the menu is small; it changes weekly and includes a starter, followed by a choice from two mains, then a homemade dessert. We started our meal with an antipasto plate loaded with garlic sausage, Brie, pickled asparagus and peppers, juicy caperberries and nutty bread, sided by Bridge Brewing’s seasonal IPA, the Hopilano. With dinner we had the Haywire Crush Pad White. It’s a perfect patio wine, blended from Pinot Gris, Chardonnay, Sauvignon Blanc and Pinot Blanc. We had a simple and crunchy mixed green salad, followed by a mouthwatering plate of thick barbecued ribs, loaded up beside potato wedges and tangy coleslaw. We also sampled the other main: a thick portobello mushroom grilled with Provolone cheese and drizzled with balsamic reduction. We ﬁnished with the day’s dessert: lemon triﬂe layered cleverly in a glass. To have all three courses, it’s $21.95, or you can order them a la carte; mains are $12.95. A glass of beer or wine will run you $5.50. This isn’t fussy food, nor is the menu so ambitious that the cooks can’t manage the quality. Recently featured on the cover of BC Business magazine, they’ve been making news in the B.C. wine industry for their custom-crush facility, where winemakers without wineries can produce and market their brands. On top of that, as well as the wines they’re already producing under the Haywire label, Coletta says they are now preparing to plant Burgundian varietals (Pinot Noir and Chardonnay) on the 312 acres of ranchland they purchased in the Garnet Valley. Salad features spinach, pecans and strawberries From page 31 Simmer for another minute or two, stirring frequently, until cream sauce has thickened. Stir in one more tablespoon of butter and enough of the remaining milk or cream so mixture is fairly loose (it will thicken while baking). Season to taste with salt and pepper and stir one-half cup of the cheese into the spinach. Preheat oven to 375 degrees; butter a shallow one-quart baking dish and turn the spinach mixture into it. Mix the breadcrumbs with the remaining half cup of cheese and sprinkle over the spinach; melt the last tablespoon of butter and drizzle evenly over the breadcrumbs. Bake until heated through and golden on top, about 30 minutes. Makes six servings.

Spinach and Lemon Hummus 2 large handfuls of baby spinach One 400-gr tin of chickpeas, drained Juice of two small lemons and ﬁnely grated zest of one lemon 2 Tbsp tahini (sesame seed paste) 1-2 garlic cloves, crushed 1 ⁄3 cup olive oil ½ tsp kosher salt or sea salt 4 Tbsp plain Greek yogurt Wash the spinach and without drying it place it in a heavy skillet over mediumhigh heat. Cook, stirring, just until wilted. Drain in a colander; rinse with cold water and with your hands squeeze out as much water as possible. Place the cooked spinach and all the remaining ingredients into a food processor; process until smooth.

Place in a shallow serving bowl and drizzle with a little extra olive oil if desired; serve with pita bread or pita chips. Makes six servings.

Milliken added a penalty kick in the second half, scoring all of his team’s points in the win. Rockridge pressed hard in the final minutes but the Cavaliers held their ground, keeping the Ravens from finding their way over the line. “It’s incredible,” Collingwood captain Marshall Fuller said about coming out ahead in Thursday’s slugfest. “That was a pretty hard-fought game, it could have gone either way. . . . It was a huge defensive game — everyone was hitting and fighting, every inch counted. We came away with a lucky break and put it in the corner. That’s really what won it, just one break.” Speirs was impressed by the defence displayed by both teams. “We had some good chances in the second half — we got to their goal line three or four times — and they held really well. I give them a lot of credit for their defence. We got caught out a couple of times but I thought defensively we were really solid too. Racers dive into action at North Shore Triathlon MORE than 600 racers tested their strokes, spins and strides during the annual North Shore Triathlon held Monday.

Victoria’s Connor Forman won the elite Super Sprint race (under 21) in a time of 32:26 while Megan Kinghorn, also of Victoria, won the women’s Super Sprint in 37:21. and our backline came up and in those crucial last five minutes they did make their tackles.” The Cavaliers were once again led by their power trio of Grade 12 players Fuller, Milliken and Connor McRae. “Marshall just kind of took the game by the scruff of the neck like he usually does,” said Speirs. “Taylor was awesome, Connor — our three guys, I mention them all the time but those guys, they’re game breakers.” Both teams will now head to the provincial championships starting this weekend and they’ll both be battle-tested because of their games against each other. “Rockridge and Collingwood are always amongst the best AA teams and I think that really helps us at the B.C.s because we play each other a couple of times a year so it makes us both much better,” said Speirs. Fuller addressed both teams after receiving the championship banner, voicing his respect and appreciation for the Rockridge team. It’s become an annual occurrence for the two teams to battle in the Lower Mainland final. “The Rockridge/Collingwood rivalry has been going on ever since I came to Collingwood,” he said. “It’s a huge privilege to have such a good team in your area. We always meet up early and then meet in the finals and it’s a hard-fought game every time. We just push and fight and luckily we came out on top today.” There’s a chance that the two teams could meet once more, in the provincial final. Collingwood comes in ranked No. 2 behind Brentwood College while Rockridge is No. 4. There are good teams, however, standing in the way of that rematch. Fuller feels good about how his Collingwood team is playing heading into the final tournament. “I’m pretty confident,” he said. “We’ve really been coming

KERN - Teresa (Terry) 1936-2013

Terry passed away Wednesday evening May 8th at Evergreen L.G.H. with family at her side. Terry was born in Lethbridge Alberta, the youngest of six siblings. She will be greatly missed by her brother Sydney (Olly), her sister Florence (David) and fifteen nieces and nephews. Predeceased by her brother Harvey (1994), her sister Aileen (2002) and eldest brother Gene in (2012). She leaves many loyal friends especially Shirley Hardisty and her husband Don. Terry graduated from West Van High. She was an airline stewardess for Air Canada and then an a s s i s t an t t e a c h er at St . Anthony’s School. Her greatest love was her family, music, children and cats. She was always singing and expressing her love for everyone. But best of all she loved her nieces and nephews and their families. Lynn, Jeffrey, Donna and Steven Kern formerly of North Van, Patty, Cathy, Sam, Kristine and Gordon Kern in Ontario; Laurie, Valerie, Michael and Colleen Kern from Richmond and Andy, Allen and Nancy Davenport from Vancouver. We would like to express our deepest gratitude to Dr. Mark Seger and the wonderful staff at Evergreen House, L.G.H. There will be a funeral Mass and celebration of life at 11:00 a.m. Friday, May 24th at St. Stephen’s Parish, 1360 - 24th St E. North Vancouver, (corner of 24th & Mountain Highway)

Nora died peacefully at Lions Gate Hospital after a short illness. She is survived by loving family members and many close friends. Nora attended John Oliver Secondary School and graduated as top student from UBC, with a B. Ed and B. PE. and began her teaching career at John Oliver. Later, she became the first woman PE department head in Vancouver, at Eric Hamber High School, where she coached sports teams 3 seasons per year for 27 years. Nora was named the most outstanding basketball player in Canada and was inducted into the BC Sports Hall of Fame as a member of the Vancouver Eiler’s basketball team, winning 10 Canadian championships. She starred on Canada’s Pan American basketball team in 1955, 1959, 1963, and managed the 1967 medal winning team. She also played on two Canadian volleyball championship teams. Nora was inducted into the Basketball Canada Hall of Fame as the first woman individual player. She is also a member of the Basketball BC Hall of Fame and the UBC Sports Hall of Fame. She was a devout member of St. Pius X Catholic Church, 1150 Mount Seymour Rd, North Vancouver, where a funeral Mass will be held on Friday, May 24, 2013, at 11:00 AM. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Lions Gate Hospital Foundation or Hospice, or the BC Cancer Society.

It is with great sorrow that we announce the passing of Trevor Norman (age 49) and daughter Zarah Norman Miller (age 10) as the result of a tragic accident on May 12, 2013. They will be profoundly missed by partner and mother, Jaynie Miller, mother and grandmother, Erika Norman and grandmother, Kaylee Miller. Trevor is also survived by his brothers Mark (Brenda) and Chris (Sandy). As well, Trevor and Zarah are survived by Barbara and Alvin, Carolyn and Stuart, Justin, Colton and Braeden, Max and Sarah, Emma and Sam as well as extended family and many friends. A memorial service was held on Friday, May 17 at the Vancouver Rowing Club. Donations in memory of Trevor and Zarah can be made to Whistler Search and Rescue www.whistlersar.com or Ecole Dorothy Lynas Elementary School www.dorothylynas.com.

REA, Kay (Kathleen Lillian) (Nee: Smart)

It is with great sadness that we announce Kay’s passing after a long fight with cancer. She was predeceased by her parents Colin and Kathy Smart, Uncle Ken Phillis and brother-in-law Don Hunter. She will be greatly missed by her loving husband David (42 years), daughter Jessica Richardson (Michael), sisters Barbara Hunter and Lisa Madill (Craig), two lovely granddaughters Emma and Katie, Aunt, Audrey Phillis and nephews Daniel Hunter, Colin and Chris Madill. Kay was known for her insight, quick smile, infectious sense of humour, artistic ability and caring, generous nature. She was a dedicated BC Tel Manager (facilities) for 31 years, a passionate artist, published writer and member of the North Shore Writer’s Association, West Coast Calligraphy Society and a former member of the Silk Purse. A special thanks to Dr. Paul Sugar and Vancouver Coastal Health staff for their sensitive, compassionate support. In lieu of flowers, donations to the BC Lung Association would be appreciated. Kay’s life will be celebrated May 25 at 2 pm, Highlands United Church, North Vancouver. Reception to follow.

WHITELEY, Winifred Feb 16, 1918 - May 11, 2013 Winifred Mary Whiteley (nee Moston) died peacefully in Victoria on May 11, 2013 in her 95th year. Born in Stoke on Trent England to George and Mary Moston, she met and married Sam Whiteley in 1939, and together they emigrated to Toronto, Canada in 1951 with subsequent moves to Boston and back to England. Predeceased by Sam in England in 1984, Win returned to Canada and carved out a new life for herself with an enthusiastic embrace of western line-dancing - ultimately travelling all over the world with her many dancing friends. Win is survived by her daughter Sandra Sauve of Colwood, her son Don Whiteley of North Vancouver; grandchildren Suzanne Hamblin, Charles Sauve, Kenneth Sauve, and Garth Whiteley; and many great and great great grandchildren. A funeral service will be held at 2:00 pm Friday May 24 at the Sands Funeral Home in Colwood, B.C. After the service, Sandra Sauve invites guests to her home for a brief reception.
