Teachers prepare for strike vote Initial action would not include school closures

JANE SEYD jseyd@nsnews.com

About 1,700 teachers on the North Shore will cast ballots in a strike vote next week. But so far, both teachers

and the government are telling parents there’s no reason to panic about the threat of an imminent strike. On Tuesday, the B.C. Teachers Federation announced they will conduct a strike vote between

March 4 and 6. President Jim Iker said the strike vote is intended to send a message to government that teachers are unhappy with the government’s position at bargaining talks and with the province’s wage offer that includes a 0.5 per cent increase in the first three years. “We can’t keep on getting zero after zero,” said Daniel

Storms, president of the North Vancouver Teachers Association, who represents about 1,200 teachers. Rob Millard, president of the West Vancouver Teachers Association, who represents about 550 teachers, said he anticipates teachers will vote overwhelmingly in favour of a strike. But the union said that doesn’t mean teachers

will be walking off the job. Even if the strike vote is approved, teachers won’t walk out, stop participating in extracurricular activities or doing report cards, said Iker. The union will have 90 days from the vote to take some kind of job action before having to hold another vote. So far, the union hasn’t said what that might be.

Peter Cameron, the government’s chief negotiator in the talks, told reporters Tuesday he was disappointed the union had decided to debate the contract talks in the media. Cameron described the government’s wage offer as “an opening position,” adding, “One of the factors in the negotiations should be fiscal reality.”

Some choices are hard.

The stern of the HMS Flamborough Head is nearly sunk. After being granted a reprieve from demolition by City of North Vancouver council in January, council voted Monday night to carry on with original plans to scrap the stern. The stern, which has sat in various spots on the waterfront since 2001, was intended to be incorporated into the National Maritime Centre. When that project fell through in 2008 because the province pulled financial support, the Flamborough Head remained without a clear purpose. When an independent engineer inspected the structure holding the stern in August last year, the report noted that the See Costs page 3

Moodyville tree cutting raises ire

City, port say work near eagles’ nest is in compliance BRENT RICHTER brichter@nsnews.com

A Moodyville resident is raising concerns about the way the City of North Vancouver and Port Metro Vancouver have handled cutting down trees and working too close to an eagle’s nest as part of the Low Level Road project. Melanie Ptashynski did a walkabout of Moodyville Park with PMV and city staff on Jan. 24 to get an idea of how many trees would be cut in order to move the Spirit Trail. After learning it would be a two-metre swath for the trail plus a two-metre buffer, Ptashynski said she was pleased. But since the work was done, Ptashynski says it is closer to five metres. “I got my husband to put out measuring tape.Visually, you know it’s not,” she said. Beyond that, Ptashynski was incensed to see the whole slope side “devegetated” and work being carried out next to an eagle’s nest just south of Moody Avenue. The barrier placed around the eagle’s tree only extends about 10

And despite almost daily trips to the park, Ptashynski said she has scarcely seen the environmental monitor the port has hired to keep an eye on the job site and stop work if the eagles become distressed.

“When I was there last week, they were cutting trees right by the eagles nest,” she said. “There was pile driving going on.The eagle was obviously upset. There were no environmental monitors on site when I was there (Feb. 13) and they were cutting trees.” When the port cut down a tree with an eagles’ nest in it to make way for the new Low Level Road last year, it prompted protests.

“Given they’ve already removed an eagles’ nest that was part of this project and given the public response to that . . . they should be going above and beyond to make all efforts to minimize disturbance.” However, the trees removed for the trail were exactly in keeping with what the city informed the neighbourhood, said Peter Navratil, deputy city engineer. The only oversight

may have been the cutting done on the slope. “It didn’t come across in the site meeting but there was a piece of devegetation that had to happen to realign the Spirit Trail down toward Heywood where we’re going to do the pedestrian overpass. I think that was missed,” Navratil said. As for the eagles’ nest, protecting it has been a priority for the port, said Justin Pedley, PMV’s

director of trade areas. “At a high level, we designed the whole road around that eagle tree so we’re fully aware of the need to protect that eagle tree. The road was pushed out and around to protect it,” he said. “We’re taking down the bare minimum of trees that is required to either build to the road or build the Spirit Trail. We have no intention, by any means, to take any additional trees than what are required for the build or required for safety.” And, while a wider date range work buffer around the nest is preferable, the port is in compliance with the federal and provincial regulations when it comes to eagles, Pedley said. “One of the clear requirements of the (Wildlife and Migratory Birds Convention) acts is that we don’t do any tree cutting or impact any nests in the bird nesting window, which is March 15 to Aug. 15, so we’ve done all of our tree cutting prior to that,” he said. Under the contract with the environmental monitor hired to keep an eye on the site, the monitor is expected to be there when work begins and then stay for least four hours per visit. “If the birds are in duress, then we would stop work. In fact, it’s happened once already,” he said.

cradle was showing signs of degradation including rotting timber that was never large enough to be permanent, and a shifting of the cradle. The report concluded council should treat addressing the failing structure as a four out of five on its urgency scale, based on the moderate risk posed to the public. Council voted behind closed doors in September to spend up to $250,000 to decontaminate and dismantle the remains of the ship that was built just meters away. When that became public knowledge in December, it prompted the formation of Save Our Stern, an amalgam of various heritage groups with the aim of keeping the stern on Lot 5 as a memorial to the shipbuilding that once happened there. Council agreed to

hold off on the work and ask Roger Brooks, the consultant leading the waterfront revisioning process, to see how it could be included in any future plans for Lot 5, though Brooks concluded the only spot for it would be on the other side of Lonsdale Quay, in Waterfront Park. Council members called that a “non-starter.” Keeping the stern would cost at least $2.4 million according to city staff’s report, on top of the $1 million already spent acquiring the ship’s hull and engine, moving it around and maintaining it. The City is also paying $10,000 a month to provide security. But that cost could be justified if council would make the stern a priority, said Coun. Pam Bookham, who led the effort to save it. Bookham said it still had potential to be used as part of one of the Shipyard’s

new buildings or otherwise incorporate it into a familyfriendly interactive exhibit. Brooks’ vision, she said, was too similar to the ones he had done for other cities, drawing a comparison to Seattle’s waterfront ferris wheel and the one pitched for the pier on Lot 5. “We need to distinguish ourselves. We can’t just duplicate what other communities have done. There’s something about the Flamborough Head that sets us apart,” she said. Only Coun. Don Bell voted with Bookham. For the rest of council, the costs were too high and the ship’s time had come. Coun. Rod Clark suggested much of the community has gotten “used to it” but that wasn’t enough to justify keeping it. “That doesn’t make it heritage and that doesn’t make it viable. Above all else, I’m a defender of the taxpayers’ purse. The

taxpayers have paid through the nose on this one. It’s been a bad bit of business and there comes a point where we have to cut out losses and we’ve come to that point,” he said. “The Flamborough Head has had her day.” Coun. Guy Heywood, whose uncle Jimmy worked on the ship, agreed. “If I remember uncle Jimmy, he would have been appalled at having us pay $1 million for a hunk of metal like this without any kind of cost-benefit or vision of how it was going to make the community better so, with regret, I think we have to give up on this one,” he said. While the stern’s fate is largely sealed, staff will bring back one final report on options for saving a portion of the metal and having it reworked into a commemorative piece that will be placed in the Shipyards precinct.

A last blast of winter dumped about 20 centimetres of snow on the North Shore Sunday and Monday, bringing tree branches toppling down on power lines and sending cars sliding off of slick side streets. The unexpected snowfall was blamed for several accidents, including one where a driver who had limited visibility in the snow hit a pedestrian crossing the street at Marine Drive and Pemberton Monday morning. Luckily there were no serious injuries. In West Vancouver, weather conditions contributed to a pileup on the Cypress Bowl Road around 3:30 p.m. on Saturday afternoon, when a northbound vehicle slid across into oncoming traffic. Three people were taken to hospital with minor injuries. A driver in the 8600block of Seascape also had some explaining to do after sliding into a neighbours’ garage door, causing $4,000 worth of damage.

One person phoned police to report skidding and taking out a stop sign on Northwood early Sunday morning. A car also slid off Indian River Road and landed on its roof. Municipal crews were kept busy ploughing streets and clearing fallen trees and branches. Branches falling on to power lines resulted in about 2,400 customers on the North Shore being without power during various points in the snow storm. The largest outage was to about 1,250 homes north of Highway 1 in North Vancouver Sunday night. Local ski mountains weren’t complaining about the weather. Both Grouse and Cypress reported getting more than 100 centimetres of new snow in the past week, including 13 cm of fresh powder on Monday. Spokeswoman Jacqueline Blackwell described the conditions on Grouse as “absolutely spectacular. “It looks like quite a few people are playing hookey,” she said. BE ST V NE OT W ED BU SIN ES S

Flam burns out T

he ship’s bell has rung for the stern of the Flamborough, now that city council has decided it’s not worth spending another $2.4 million to keep it. Abandoned by the province when it pulled funding for the National Maritime Centre, the Flamborough Head has been a ship, figuratively, without a rudder for the last six years. With only a month’s lead-time and no cost estimates, the heritage advocates had little chance of rescuing it from scrap. Meanwhile, the latest staff report confirms, the mayor wasn’t kidding when he said the ship’s cradle was a safety concern. It would have been nice to have the information six months ago. It will be a shame to lose what is one of the most interesting features of our waterfront, second only to the

water itself but let’s not forget: the city has invested millions in heritage. It offers incentives for home or business owners to restore and maintain their heritage building. The city allows extra development density in exchange for heritage preservation. And future generations will also have some of the original Shipyards buildings, the yellow crane, artifacts from the Flamborough Head and a brand spanking new museum, which will no doubt pay appropriate homage to our shipbuilding history just steps away from where the stern rusts now — all in the Shipyards district. If the city follows through on plans to redevelop Lot 5, there will be far more people making the trip to the waterfront who can take in and appreciate the heritage pieces we have.

NorthVan’s central waterfront vision not fiscally prudent Dear Editor: Watching the presentation of the waterfront vision (Feb. 18) and comments from some councillors, it’s obvious the campaign for the November election is underway.

Mr. Brooks, a “destination expert” who spent much time flogging himself, has presented his vision for the Central Waterfront. This vision is likely to cost about $25 million,

plus another $20 million for a Ferris wheel that will be built privately. I can’t imagine the upkeep cost for the 15,000-square foot-ice rink from November to February, supposedly the

months when it will be useable. This when senior governments, and most citizens are being fiscally prudent. I can’t decide whether the quote of the night

should be: “how cool is thaaaaaat!” or “it will fall apart if you ask the public,” as he urged council to direct staff to get to work on it. Toni Bolton North Vancouver

Ship’s stern a spectacular artifact Dear Editor: As irony would have it, I found Mr. Passmore’s history lesson of the ship built at the foot of Lonsdale to be, well, riveting. Whether in spite of, or because of my time as a naval reserve officer, I can’t say. But having navigated plenty of military museums filled with relics all past their day and often out of context, I can say thanks but I’d rather not have to pay for the upkeep of an entire ship display. The Flamborough Head stern remains a unique, meaningful and visually spectacular artifact. Rob Brandreth-Gibbs North Vancouver

Taxpayers deserve value for money from TransLink Dear Editor: So Mayor Richard Walton thinks that a new bus terminal, a third SeaBus and more buses for North Vancouver are urgent priorities and that the main problem is finding funding for them? That is an outrageous statement. Here’s why: under the TransLink 10Year Plan adopted in 2004 the North Shore municipalities’ taxpayers were to be taxed $ 250 million through a TransLink property tax for which we would receive only

$ 45 million of new services. Our $45 million was to be roughly one-third for a new bus depot, one-third for a third SeaBus with the improved schedule that third SeaBus would bring and one-third for more buses. (Sound familiar?) The advocates for the new levy were quite specific that these were to be for new services and not replacement of existing infrastructure. Back in 2004 I did an analysis of these numbers and showed them to the late councillor Ernie Crist who confirmed that I correctly

understood what was then the TransLink proposal. Assuming the News is correctly reporting the mayor’s words, the mayor intends to lobby TransLink to give us the privilege of paying even more for services, which definitely are much needed services for the North Shore. This ignores that North Shore taxpayers have already paid five-fold for these services through the property tax levy. Even if these numbers projected in 2004 are out by 15-20 per cent what is undeniable is that we have

already more than paid for these services which we have not received. What I understand from the mayor’s comments is that TransLink has moved our property tax levy dollars into general revenue and spent them and if we are

going to get what we have paid for we will have to pay for them all over again now. As head of the TransLink Mayor’s Council it’s his job to fight for our share of the TransLink pie — not to surrender without a fight and then tell us we have to

pay all over again for what we have already more than once paid for. It is high time North Shore taxpayers got fair value for money from Translink. Lyle Craver North Vancouver

INFO FAIR

Move ahead now on development Dear Editor: As another public meeting is on us, the Lynn Valley Stop High-Rises group is once again stuffing flyers through mailboxes. I encourage Lynn Valley residents to look at the facts for themselves and sort truth from fiction. The public meetings last summer were packed with people — including the Stop High-Rises group, who were specifically

invited to talk to the people checking out the displays. It was impossible not to hear their message, yet a majority of people were clear in saying that they understand the need to redevelop the Lynn Valley Centre site. The current proposal from Bosa represents a good compromise between the people who believe that two-storey strip malls are the only acceptable

thing to build, and the developers who — not surprisingly — want the best return for their investments. With yet another Lynn Valley Centre storefront closing this month — that’s seven stores, plus Zellers that are empty — it’s surely time for council to step up, show leadership, and get this project moving ahead. NSR and Cypress patrol rescue boarder BRENT RICHTER brichter@nsnews.com

An out-of-bounds snowboarder made it home safe Saturday thanks to efforts by Cypress Mountain ski patrol and North Shore Rescue. North Shore Rescue

volunteers got the call for help around 7:30 p.m., learning of a snowboarder who was in chest-deep snow after ducking under the wire on the west side of Hollyburn Mountain. “Ideally, as soon as he knew he was in a difficult spot and lost, he should have stayed put and called

9-1-1. Instead, for several hours he was just trudging around in the snow and calling his friends and texting his friend using up valuable battery power on his phone,” said Doug Pope, North Shore Rescue search manager. When Pope spoke with the lost man, he was

able to get the GPS coordinates off the subject’s phone, which placed him in the Montizambert Creek drainage below the Howe Sound Crest Trail near the Bowen Lookout. Cypress ski patrol members got into position above the drainage and coached the subject back

up the mountain to safety. Out-of-bounds adventurers often expect they can find their way back to a mountain’s parking lot once they’ve gone into the backcountry, though that is a dangerous assumption, Pope said. “On the North Shore Mountains, they all

typically get really steep, the snow gets deep and a lot of them end in waterfalls and cliffs,” Pope said. “When you go out of bounds, it’s life and death. You’re endangering the lives of ski patrol and search and rescue personal that come and get you.”

Speeder flips car after attempt to flee JANE SEYD jseyd@nsnews.com

A New Westminster man who tried to speed away from West Vancouver police Friday in a stolen car had an abrupt end to his joyride after crashing into a rock wall and flipping the car on its roof. The driver came to the attention of police around 1 p.m. after he blew past the Westmount exit on Highway 1 doing about 120 kilometres an hour in a 90 km/h zone. Officers checked the licence plate and discovered the 1999

Honda Civic had been reported stolen Feb. 15. When the driver turned off the highway at Eagleridge Drive, police in the area closed in. A few minutes later, the driver took a curve in the 4900-block of Marine Drive at high speed and lost control. The car crashed into a rock face at the side of the road, and flipped. As police arrived, the driver crawled out of the car and tried to run away. He was arrested shortly after. Adam John Paul Sicotte, 31, has been charged with dangerous driving, flight from a police

Giant crane arrives at Seaspan shipyards Crane to be used for navy and Coast Guard ships ANNE WATSON awatson@nsnews.com

The renovations at Seaspan’s shipyards are moving full steam ahead with the newest addition of a large gantry crane. The crane, weighing 300 tonnes and separated into three pieces because of its substantial size, left China about a month ago and arrived on B.C. shores Feb. 20. It was shipped to the Fraser Surrey Docks where it was offloaded onto barges to be moved to Seaspan’s shipyard. “It’s a big milestone for us because we’ve been modernizing our shipyards since we signed the umbrella agreement for NSPS (National Shipbuilding Procurement Strategy),” said Brian Carter, Seaspan president. “But this will be the first real landmark that will be visible from quite a distance that people can

blocks and the blocks are built in our various fabrication facilities and then when they’re entirely complete, the crane will lift them into place on

the vessels. It’s a very efficient way of doing it,” said Carter. “It will also support other operations in the shipyard but its main purpose will be to

put blocks in place that ultimately form the ship.” Carter said the assembly of the crane, which also includes thousands of other parts, is a project unto itself.

“We have a crane coming in to lift our crane into place, so there’s a 1,600 tonne crawler crane that comes in 80 truck loads of equipment, it takes about 10 days to assemble,” he said. Seaspan is estimating the assembly, hook-up, testing and commissioning of the new gantry crane will take several months and are targeting this summer for completion. The modernization project came with a $200million price tag that includes six new buildings as well as the gantry crane and is scheduled for completion this fall. Carter said they started designing the shipyard in early 2012 and broke ground in October of the same year. “We’ve been progressing steadily since and really changing the landscape of our shipyard here in North Vancouver,” he said. Seaspan was awarded an $8-billion contract by the federal government in 2011 to build a polar icebreaker, three offshore fisheries science vessels, an offshore oceanographic ship and two support ships, as well SeeWork page 11

as up to 10 Canadian Coast Guard non-combat ships worth around $3billion, including five 65metre medium endurance multi-tasked vessels and up to five 75-metre offshore patrol vessels. Carter said the construction of the vessels would begin in October.

“After we build the first four science vessels we’ll start on the joint support ship and that work takes place beginning in late 2016 and that will be the largest ship ever built in Western Canada,” he said. Seaspan plans to bring in more trades people once the construction has started. “We have about 200

people in our production work force today and about another 150 in our management staff and technical staff,” Carter said. “So we’ll go from that level to 1,000 people in the production work force in the 2016-2017 time frame so the growth is quite significant over the next three to four years.”

Make time to grow green

For many, our modern lives are so busy that, between working during the day, shuttling the kids to various activities and taking care of aging parents, there is little time for growing a garden. Our responsibilities are forcing many people to grow a garden only if it’s convenient and low-maintenance. The convergence of a lack of time, the desire to grow low-maintenance gardens and an increased desire to grow gardens that are environmentally friendly is leading to significant changes in the landscape industry. There are of course other factors driving this change, like a sluggish world economy, environmental destruction worldwide, a high cost of living in the Metro region, and increasing taxes and fees for almost everything, including driving a car across a bridge. Those

Over the past several years I have noticed that people are asking more often to eliminate their lawns to replace them with attractive, low-maintenance plantings. As well, people are frequently requesting drip irrigation on timers, drought-tolerant plants, smaller plants that do not require pruning and options to go pesticide-free in the garden.

Many of my colleagues in the industry are reporting similar trends in their daily business. To help those of you who are looking to make changes in the garden to suit your lifestyle needs, here are some ideas to help your garden become low-maintenance and environmentally friendly. What if I don’t have time for weeding? The only way to avoid almost all weeding is to install mulch on the planting beds. Use our own homegrown bark mulch from hemlock and fir trees and apply it five-eight

centimetres (two-three inches) thick over the entire planting bed right up to the base of all plants. Do not bury plant crowns during installation. Do not pay for useless landscape fabric. Try to adjust any perception you may have that bark mulch is ugly or only for shopping centres — it is not. If you do not like bark mulch, use any other organic material like composted bark mulch (black in colour), wood chips or shredded leaves to cover the beds and suppress weed growth. Gardens worth the time and effort From page 13 Do I really need that much lawn? Ask yourself how much lawn you really need and what you actually use the lawn for. Do you eat it? Play or picnic on it? Do the kids use it? Does the dog or cat use it? Or, are you simply paying to keep up with the Joneses? Lawn maintenance on a yearly basis costs twice as much as planting bed maintenance. Lawns require billions of litres of water annually across Canada to maintain. Lawns also use large quantities of chemical fertilizers and pesticides to maintain. Shrub beds use a fraction of the consumption that lawns do. Water restrictions in our region were only brought into practice to limit the amount of water being used to keep lawns green during summer drought, at a time of the year when lawn grasses naturally go dormant — brown is the new green. Alternatives to lawns include veggie gardens, planting beds, groundcover plantings, walkways, patios, playgrounds for kids, rock gardens and so many other beautiful features that improve your outdoor living space while protecting your wallet and the planet. If I can’t spray pesticides to control bugs what do I do? Firstly, determine accurately that pesticides are actually needed. Approximately 50 per cent of all pesticides are applied

to be preventative. You wouldn’t take antibiotics all the time to avoid getting sick, so why apply pesticides if there is no problem? Secondly, improve soil and plant health so plants are better able to defend against pests and diseases preventing infestation in the first place. Mulching, amending the soil at planting time and avoiding chemical fertilizers are the first steps to take to improve plant and soil health. Thirdly, learn how to kill under-performing plants. Notwithstanding heritage or nostalgically important plants, the nursery industry in Canada is producing so many great plants that finding a replacement for any problematic plant is as simple as a visit to the local garden centre. The first thing I teach students is how to cull and kill unworthy plants. They don’t like it but it is absolutely required. There are many other ways to grow towards a low-maintenance garden including proper plant selection, pruning only for a reason and so on. Ultimately, each person finds a way to grow their garden within their own philosophical and time limits. It’s not easy but I assure you it is absolutely possible and worthwhile, if not for ourselves then for our children. Keep pots polished to perfection Green Guide

Remove tarnish with a simple homemade cleaner

Do you have a set of copper pots hidden away in your cupboard because they are just too tarnished to use? I’m starting to see copper pots make a comeback in kitchens. We all love the look and cooking performance of these pots but the routine cleaning of them can become tiresome. If you have a set, or perhaps are thinking of purchasing a set, there are a couple of things you may want to keep in mind. Firstly, if you have an old set of copper pots be sure to check them over very carefully for any scratches or scrapes that may have occurred over time. In Canada, it is mandatory that the cooking surface of copper

Home Ideas

pots be coated in another metal. Stainless steel is usually the popular choice. Check to make sure this is the case as copper can be poisonous. Only the outside surface of the pot should be exposed copper. If you are unsure as to the condition of your pots then best to stop using them. If your copper cookware is badly tarnished then there are many commercial copper cleaners on the market that will clean them up nicely. Home Depot carries two brands that I quite like. The first is Brasso Metal Polish and the second is called Tarn-X.

Both are equally good for cleaning copper but be sure to rinse and wash well

after applying the cleaner. If you are in a pinch and don’t have time to

pick up a copper cleaner then this trick may be for you. A simple paste of one-part table salt and one-part all-purpose flour mixed with some white vinegar will take off most of your copper tarnish. Simply add the vinegar a little at a time until a paste is formed and apply the paste with a soft cloth. Be sure to rub all the paste onto the copper surface and rub quite vigorously. You should see the results very quickly. For darker spots you may have to scrub a little longer or perhaps resort to a commercial cleaner. I tried this on my copper pots and the results were fantastic. I had to use a small brush to get the spaces around the handle as well. When you are done, rinse the pot with cold water and dry with a soft cloth. Barb Lunter is a freelance writer with a passion for home decor, entertaining and floral design. barb@lunter.ca lunter.ca

Invasive plants are a major problem in the Lower Mainland. These non-native plants out-compete native vegetation and some are a threat to infrastructure and human health. The District of West Vancouver is developing a strategy to address this problem in our community, and we need your input. Nip tattling in the bud

Andrea and her friends are playing happily in the family room. You can hear the voices of the three eight-year-olds as they hold a tea party with themselves and all their dolls and stuffed toys. They are clearly having a great time. But suddenly Andrea’s friend Ashley comes running into the kitchen. “Andrea and Justine aren’t playing fair,” she announces. You look up and you can tell this is another case of Ashley tattling on the other kids. Ashley has a look of righteous indignation. “You need to come and tell them to behave!” she announces. This is a clear case of tattling. Handling tattling is frustrating. The tattler is convinced that she is in the right and that it’s important that you come and deal with the misbehaving kids. You can almost see her rubbing her hands with glee as she considers that her friends are going to be in trouble. eight-year-olds as they hold a tea party with themselves and all their dolls and stuffed toys. They are clearly having a great time. But then, Andrea’s friend Ashley comes running into the kitchen. “Justine dropped a glass onto the floor and there is glass everywhere.” This is clearly not a case of tattling, she is telling. Her demeanor is one of concern and fright. She knows this is serious and someone could be hurt. And that’s the difference between tattling and telling. When a child wants to get other kids in trouble, she is tattling, when she sees

that someone is in trouble and needs protection or is going to wreck someone else’s property, that is telling. You can usually tell the difference by the attitude of the child. The tattler has her halo glowing with righteous indignation. The teller is clearly frightened and needs help. That being said, how do you deal with a child who tattles? First, consider why they do it. Some consider it is their responsibility to save the world from all wrongs and need to have an adult to help deal with the offender, and some want to be labelled the good kid. The best way to handle a tattler is to refuse to engage. If this is the first time she has tattled just let her know that she is tattling and you don’t want to deal with that. Don’t give her eye contact, just keep on doing whatever you were doing. You can ignore her or just say, “ummm.” Or you can say, “I bet you kids can work it out together.” If you can hear that the

problem is accelerating, go to the family room and summarize the situation without any blame. Make a subtle suggestion or two and then let them work it out. For example, “I see that there are three girls here with three dolls and three stuffed toys. I know you guys can figure out how to make this work.” When you have a group of kids over to play and you know that one is a tattler try to nip the problem in the bud. At the point at which you realize she will usually show up, you go in with a treat or game suggestion. If you are having an ongoing problem with a specific child who loves to tattle there are some steps you can take. Make sure you are paying attention to her when she’s not tattling. Get her involved in a project where she can be successful and feel good about herself. Teach her, and the group she plays with how to problem solve. Have them think about a problem and discuss options. What could they do? How could they handle it differently? Once Ashley no longer feels the need to tattle she will be a happier child and you will enjoy having her in your home.

Variety is the spice of life

S

pring break is almost here, and many parents are starting to feel exacerbated by the amount of time off school that children have nowadays. With early dismissals at least once a month, a professional day at least once a month, and 2 weeks off for winter, and spring break, not to mention the normal summer vacation of 9 weeks. So the question is how to turn this down time into up time? How can you make sure that your child or children are getting the most out of this time away from school?

The camp locations are both in Lynn Valley; St. Clements church at 3400 Institute Road, and Mt. Olivet church at 1700 Mountain Highway. Bee Haven also offers full day-camps on winter, and summer breaks, and as always Bee Haven is open to all children. For more information visit, www.beehavenkids.com and look under the programs section for a printable Spring Break brochure, or email info@beehavenkids.com for enrollment information.

Our centres are open from 7:00 am–6:00 pm all year round excluding stat holidays.

At a Bee Haven day-camp children are led by experienced year round after school care staff, who are trained in the fields of education and childcare. Parents need only pack a lunch, and any supplies specific to the day attending, such as a bathing suit on a swimming day. Camp fees cover the whole day from 7:00am-6:00pm, so there is no extra cost for before and after camp care. There are 2 nutritional snacks provided per day, and all costs associated with trips are covered by enrollment fees, so there won’t be any surprises, like at some camps. With 2 locations to choose from, and flexible enrollment options Bee Haven is definitely worth checking out this spring break.

CELEBRATE Pink Shirt Day WEDNESD WED DNESDAY,, FEBRUAR UARY 26, 2014 201 14

High school can be a bit of a roller coaster, to say the least. I have been going to West Vancouver Secondary for five years and have been able to witness it grow and change. Being part of a school with such diversity and with so many opportunities is really important to me and I am thankful for what my school has to offer. No matter the school though, each student within it will be faced with challenges. Many people associate bullying with young children on the playground, but that’s not exclusively the case. Particularly in recent years, and looking forward, the relatively new phenomenon of social media has perhaps opened the door to increased bullying. Although not always intentional, it is something that will be a

Pink Day is a time for anyone to shine. It is a day when everybody is accepted for who they are, and everyone can celebrate their talents and differences. I may not get bullied or picked on often, but I can understand what it’s like. It’s hard to fit in with peers when you are considered “different” or “odd.” I find that when you know what it’s like you are more eager to help people like you. Pink Day helps people remember that you have the power to make people feel special. Everyone has special talents that are different from anyone else, and Pink Day is an opportunity to show them off. Sometimes all people need is for someone to tell them, “Hey, you’re good at

part of our lives, no matter the age, unless something is done. Anyone can be bullied, but anyone can also be a bully. Bullying does not have to happen. Pink Day is the first step. It is the first concerted step in educating people to be more aware of themselves and others in a positive way, and perhaps more aware that innocent

actions can have negative results. Diversity should be a celebrated thing, and Pink Day allows for that. Positive actions make a difference. We have the freedom to be who we want to be. Naomi Brown, seen in the photo above, is a Grade 12 student atWestVancouver secondary.

that,” or “That’s really cool.” People can find their passions just by someone complimenting them on something they hide away in themselves or that they are judged for. I feel privileged to be participating in Pink Day this year and it is something I am proud to

spread the word about. There is something that we can do about bullying. It is not an inevitable part of growing up. Now is your time to shine! Skylar Brockie, seen in the photo above, is a Grade 6 student at Gleneagles elementary inWestVancouver.

We take care of each other and understand that we are all responsible for standing up for the right thing. This year, we will all be wearing our pink shirts to show each other and ourselves what it means to be a part of such a great and supportive school. B is for Belonging. When we walk through the hallways at Brooksbank, bullying is not something we’re always thinking about. When Grade 7 students speak at our Pink Day assemblies, they talk about how bullying happens, why it happens, and what we can all do to change it.They share stories with us, some that are very sad, and that helps us to see how painful and hurtful

it is. It makes us feel inspired to do good and to take care of ourselves and our friends. We changed our Pink Day slogan from “Don’t Bully” to “Do Good” because people seem to respond better to “do” instead of “don’t.” We do activities that group us together with kids from other classes and other grades, to do teamwork projects. Sometimes we even have competitions to see which team can work the best together. We also have multicultural workshops that help us to explore our own family culture and learn about other people’s cultures and beliefs. We even have a potluck lunch so everyone can bring a meal from home that we can try. It’s fun to make friends in different grades, and it makes playing at recess much more fun

since we get to know everybody’s names and faces. There are lots of things we do at Brooksbank to help us all feel like we are connected, like we all belong. Just like brothers and sisters, we don’t always get along. Sometimes we get teased or we see someone being teased, but we have the courage to stand up and talk about it with our teachers. Our teachers are kind of like parents. They help us sort out our problems, and give us a pick-me-up when we need it.We have teachers at our school who have never taught us, but still know each of our names. Our school feels a lot like family. Written by Brooksbank elementary students Olivia Sherman, Nikayla Allen and Faith Grant.

Pink Day means making a constant, continued effort to combat bullying and to create a safe, caring environment in not only your school, but your community. It’s often difficult for students, especially in younger grades, to feel a sense of belonging when faced with the large, intimidating world of high school. The transition from elementary school will often leave students feeling isolated in their new school, leaving them vulnerable to bullying and feelings of self-doubt. There are many ways to combat these feelings of being disconnected, one of the best being to become involved in one’s school. From our own experiences, joining Sutherland’s student council and drama clubs gave us confidence, friends in different grades, and a feeling of being much more connected to our school. Still, new students

will often have difficulties becoming involved or will choose not to be because they are unaware of just how beneficial this involvement can be. A few Sutherland students are seeking to change this by developing a project that involves producing a completely student-run play.We will use this production and related improv workshops at elementary schools to work towards a common goal: increasing the sense of belonging felt by elementary school students when moving into high school.

Hopefully, the production will connect the community to Sutherland and its drama programs and introduce future Sutherland students to the school and the extracurricular opportunities that it offers. This could be one way that newer students can begin to develop a sense of belonging to the school and help create a supportive student body that can combat, and eventually stop, bullying. Written by Sutherland secondary students Erin Crawley, Holly Lowe, and Katherine Mavin.

A Canadian sparkling wine may not be called Champagne as that designation is protected by law. In fact, many countries have outright banned the use of the term Champagne for domestic products, reserving it exclusively for wines hailing from the clearly demarcated parameters of the Champagne region of Northeastern France. Champagne is perhaps the best known example of a legally protected, geographically contingent food product, but other examples abound, including cheeses (Stilton, Gorgonzola), specialty meats (Iberico and Westphalian hams) and condiments (Balsamic vinegar). Perhaps the most interesting instance of a legally protected food is pizza Napoletana. Traditional Neapolitan pizza, that hand-shaped, thin-crusted, simply topped culinary marvel that has arguably paved the way for all other garnished flatbreads the world over, has a strict set of criteria that define it. In 1984, a not-for-profit group, the Associazione Verace Pizza Napoletana (AVPN), was formed in Naples, Italy, to protect and promote the traditions

The AVPN put forth a comprehensive set of standards that pizzaioli (pizza makers) must uphold if they wish to call their pizzas true Neapolitan. These standards include the type of flour and yeast used to make the dough, the thickness of the crust, and the baking temperature of the pizza. Unlike most other foods with protected names, the Neapolitan pizza may be produced outside of its traditional geographic boundaries provided

the product bearing the name conforms to these standards. I recently learned that right here on the North Shore efforts are being undertaken to produce authentic Neapolitan pizza. Giardino, a new entry into the casual Italian dining scene, offers fine examples of this celebrated pie alongside traditional Italian pastas, salads, and panini. The restaurant occupies a small space on West 15th Street near Lonsdale Avenue that has seen a number of failed ventures

in recent years. On the evening of my visit, the room was dimly lit but welcoming, its brick and wooden interior exuding a certain warmth. An etched light fixture on the far side of the room projected a giant geometrical flower on the wall. Tables were set with small bottles of homeinfused olive oils, some with chilies and some with sprigs of thyme. The small but thoughtful wine and beer list was clearly developed with food pairing in mind and the restaurant offers a mid-week reprieve from

operating at temperatures above 700° F and boasts a balance of glutens and other proteins that yield the uniquely crispy, chewy textures for which Neapolitan pizza is noted. My wife DJ and I sampled a healthy cross section of the menu, beginning our meal with two, eight-inch pizzas, a traditional margherita and a funghi. The eight-inch pizzas are billed as appetizers and are very reasonably priced at just $8 each. Immediately evident was the quality of the crust on these pizzas: springy,

thin, crisp in places but soft enough to fold over or eat with a knife and fork. The margherita offered a decadent amount of fior di latte mozzarella, fresh tomatoes and basil with a drizzle of fragrant olive oil. The funghi, packed with sliced mushrooms, was finished with a handful of tart and peppery arugula, a nice contrast to the earthy richness of the main topping. Based on these initial samplings I’d be keen to try Giardino’s other pizzas, including an unusual creation topped with pistachios. Though Neapolitan pizza might be Giardino’s

focus, one would be remiss to overlook the excellent pastas on offer here. I tried the restaurant’s take on spaghetti carbonara, for me easily one of the richest and most consistently enjoyable traditional Italian pastas. The parmesan and cream-based, egg-finished sauce was expertly prepared to just coat the noodles without being soupy while a healthy dose of black pepper enlivened the dish. Sumptuous, thick-cut morsels of bacon contributed a welcome salty crispiness. DJ sampled a complex and flavourful creation

of fettuccine tossed in homemade pesto with cherry tomatoes and sliced olives, a garlicky, robust dish that lent itself particularly well to the wine we paired with the meal, a straightforward and nicely acidic Barbera with subtle notes of licorice and sour cherry. To balance our hearty mains we tried a novel and surprisingly addictive riff on calabrese salad, made here with broccoli, sunflower seeds, loads of parmesan cheese and a light dressing. Blues find a silver lining

Cap women lose B.C. final but win spot at nationals ANDY PREST aprest@nsnews.com

Scan this page with the Layar app to see video of the Capilano men’s volleyball team as well as full tournament results

There were two big prizes up for grabs for the Capilano Blues women’s volleyball team as they hosted the PacWest provincial championships last weekend. In this instance, one out of two ain’t bad. In fact, it’s pretty darn good. The Blues battled all the way to the championship final before finally falling to the No. 1-ranked team in Canada, the Vancouver Island University Mariners. The loss left the Blues without the gold, but the silver lining was that Capilano qualified for the CCAA national championships just by making the final. The PacWest league was allotted two spots in the big show and so both VIA and Cap U will make the trip to Toronto’s Seneca College for the March 6-8 national championships. “It feels awesome, I’m very proud,” said head coach Cal Wohlford of earning a ticket to nationals.Wohlford is in his second year as the Blues boss after taking over for longtime coach Wayne Desjardins. “Wayne has built this (program) up and for 13 years he worked hard and it

feels good to come in here and continue the tradition that he started.” The Blues looked like they might win it all in the final held Saturday night at the Capilano Sportsplex, battling the Mariners to a standstill in the opening set. VIU took a 24-23 lead in the opener but the Blues tied it up on a monster kill for third-year power hitter Sara Pettersson. That high, however, immediately turned into a low as Pettersson, one of the team’s captains, landed awkwardly at the base of the umpire stand and stayed down, clutching at her knee. Pettersson left in a wheelchair and, it would seem, the team’s spirit left with her.The Mariners scored three of the next four points to win the set 27-25 and from then on it was all VIU as they used their balanced attack to blast away a 3-0 win, 27-25, 25-17, 25-16. The loss of one of their team leaders at such a crucial moment shook up the Blues, said Capilano libero Jacqueline Caverly. “It hit our team pretty hard.We just couldn’t recover as well as we’d like to the rest of the match.” Petterssson, a native of Sweden who was finishing up her second year with

N O T E G THE

COVER

Capilano, was later diagnosed with a torn ACL and will miss the national championships. Losing her did more than just take away one of their best players, said Wohlford. “Sara is one of our mature athletes and holds the confidence of the team a little bit,” he said. “She’s one of those players who stares at teammates’ eyes. Even when she makes mistakes she doesn’t get down, she’s

just like ‘OK, c’mon, give me the ball.’When you lose that, some players have a tendency to say, ‘who’s going to do that now.’ And some of our older players should have stepped up a bit more but I think they were a little shell-shocked.” Wohlford, however, was quick to add that VIU was a very deserving champion. “VIU is super strong. It was going to be a battle, there’s no doubt. I don’t

feel like we missed an opportunity to win a gold medal, I think we just missed an opportunity to fight for one.” VIU middle Tylar Turnbull was nearly unstoppable on attack, slamming down seven kills without committing a single hitting error on her way to earning Player of the Match and tournament MVP See North page 42

A stirring comeback for the NorthVanWolf Pack fell just short Saturday night in PJHL playoff action against the Delta Ice Hawks and now the Pack will need to scratch even harder if they are to advance past the first round. The Wolf Pack fell behind 5-2 in the second period Saturday at Harry Jerome recreation centre in game three of their seven-game

series but rallied to score three unanswered goals to tie it up.The comeback was spearheaded by Mitchell Crisanti and Marcus Houck who each either scored or assisted on all three goals to make it 5-5. North Vancouver pressed the issue in the dying minutes of the third but could not get the go-ahead goal and the game went into overtime. The teams traded several chances in the extra frame but it was Delta’s Mark Trotman who finally found the back of the net

seven minutes in, beating North Van goalie Braden Krogfoss with a wrist shot through a crowd on a quick counterattack for the Ice Hawks. Krogfoss entered the game midway through the second period, replacing Anders Ten Vaanholt who gave up four goals on 21 shots. Houck ended the night with four points while the Ice Hawks were paced by Mak Barden who matched Houck’s output with a goal and three assists to earn first star honours for the game. Delta’s Colton Kroeker also racked up four points with two goals and two assists. North Van drew first blood in the series Feb. 18 at Ladner Leisure Centre with Quinton Vitek scoring in overtime to clinch a 4-3 win. Game 2 was Friday night at

honours.VIU setter Ashley Cousens and power hitter Megan Groenendijk were named tournament all-stars. The Mariners also had a North Shore connection on the floor in Sutherland grad Leanna Gildersleeve, a fifthyear power hitter who was recently named the PacWest player of the year. She’s a player that Capilano’s coach knows very well from the time both spent with the North Shore’s BCO Volleyball Club. “I used to coach her — she’s like a second daughter to me,” he said, chuckling and nodding when asked if it would have been nice to have her on his side of the net in the final. “She’s an awesome person, awesome player. She’s going hard. She’s a competitor all the time.” As for the Blues, the loss in the final stung but, aside from that, they’ve been playing their best volleyball of the season over the past few weeks, said Wohlford. They started the PacWest championship with a 3-0 sweep of the sixth-seeded Douglas College in the quarterfinals and then faced a semifinal matchup against the University of the Fraser Valley Cascades, seeded second in the tournament and ranked No. 4 in Canada. With a berth in the national championships on the line the Blues came out swinging, winning the first set 25-19.The Cascades, defending provincial and

national champions, fought back the rest of the way but Capilano always managed to come through at crucial moments and came away with another 3-0 sweep, 2519, 25-23, 25-23. “Huge win for us,” said Wohlford. “We came out with our A-game.We were very disciplined, we ran what we wanted to run, we stopped them when they went on little runs.We came up with big digs and big plays. It was a great match.” Power hitter Kelsi Boroevich led the way with 13 kills against only two hitting errors. She was later named to the tournament all-star team along with Caverly. Caverly was also recently named a PacWest first-team all-star for her play during the regular season. Following the final she reflected on playing her last match on the Capilano court. “It’s a little sad.We would have liked to have had a gold medal, but you can’t win a gold medal every day.” ••• On the men’s side the thirdseeded Douglas College Royals defeated the No. 1 Columbia Bible College Bearcats 3-1 to take the PacWest title. The Blues men lost 3-1 to College of the Rockies in the quarterfinals. Capilano’s Dan Caverly, Jacqueline’s twin brother, was named to the PacWest first all-star team for his strong season while libero Elion Wong was named to the PacWest all-rookie team.
