Harper pledges tax credit for seniors VOTE 2015

Conservatives promise relief to ‘seniors who need it most’ BRENT RICHTER brichter@nsnews.com

Conservative leader Stephen Harper made his second campaign stop on the North Vancouver side of the new Burnaby North – Seymour riding Tuesday, this time targeting seniors’ votes. Harper promised, if re-elected, his government would create a tax credit shielding the first $2,000 of private pensions from income tax for seniors getting by on a single income. Harper made the announcement to a crowd made up mostly of seniors gathered at the Canlan Ice Sports arena. “The tax credit will extend additional tax relief to nearly 1.6 million single and widowed seniors in Canada and, in combination with the existing pension income credits, it means a single senior will receive additional tax relief of up to $600 annually. This is important, friends, and it is an affordable commitment. It helps the seniors who need it most,” Harper said. The Conservatives say the plan will take four

Coroner IDs Lynn Canyon drowning victim BRENT RICHTER brichter@nsnews.com

The BC Coroners Service has identified the man who drowned in Lynn Canyon on Friday evening as Syed Wajahat Ali, 25, an international student from Pakistan who was living in Coquitlam. Police received a report

of a possible drowning just after 5 p.m. when Ali, who was with a group of other young men, jumped from the lower cliff into 90Foot Pool that can be seen from the Lynn Canyon suspension bridge and got caught in an underwater eddy. “His three other buddies, (and) a park ranger observed this. He

went under the water and never resurfaced,” said Cpl. Richard De Jong, North Vancouver RCMP spokesman. “Our dive team attended and confirmed (Ali) was literally trapped under a rock in the water.” District of North Vancouver Fire and Rescue Services raced to the scene with their swift water

seniors in poverty need. “It’s a few hundred dollars if they apply for the credit. I think the Liberal plan is much better — restoring OAS and GIS to 65 years of age. That will put $13,000 into the pockets of most lowincome seniors,” he said. The Liberals are also promising to increase the guaranteed income supplement by 10 per cent. “Instead of having to apply for it like under the Conservative plan, you automatically qualify for it and it puts $920 per year into the hands of our lowest income seniors,” Beech said. “That would reach 1.25 million seniors, 900,000 of which would be single women…I think it’s an issue that’s definitely worth addressing since because one in four single seniors lives in low income.” The NDP too is promising to bring the pension eligibility age back to 65, according to NDP candidate Carol Baird Ellan. “We know that Harper’s plan has not been working. He promised not to interfere with pensions and yet he raised the eligibility age from 65 to 67 shortly after taking office,” she said. “We’ve got 200,000 seniors living in poverty.” Within the first six months of taking office an NDP government would meet with Canada’s premiers to discuss enhancements to the Canada Pension Plan and Quebec Pension Plan.

We know that a third of the population don’t have pension plans or don’t have proper plans for saving and we need to deal with that in a tried and tested way,” she said Green Party candidate Lynne Quarmby said the tax credit plan doesn’t offer enough relief for lowincome seniors. “It doesn’t nearly go far enough to help seniors who are facing poverty, which unfortunately, is more and more,” she said.

Under the Greens’ plan, seniors would be covered by a guaranteed livable income, which would be indexed to the cost of living. “It’s been done in other jurisdictions very successfully. That goes much farther in addressing the real poverty that many seniors face,” she said Seniors would also benefit from a national pharmacare program and a national affordable housing program the Greens have included in their platform, Quarmby said.

The Conservatives used their tough-on-crime agenda to launch an attack website against former provincial court judge and star NDP candidate Carol Baird Ellan in the Burnaby North – Seymour riding this week, inviting the public to judge Baird Ellan’s past legal decisions. On youbethejudge.ca, the Conservative campaign features three of Ellan’s judicial decisions in cases, including a child sexual abuser and child pornographer, highlighting

sentences the Tories describe as soft on crime. Those include a twoyear jail sentence Baird Ellan handed an 86-yearold North Vancouver man in 2010 for past sexual abuse of his two granddaughters. The site then encourages those who find the sentence too lenient to enter their contact details into a Conservative campaign data collection system. Mike Little, the Conservative candidate and former District of North Vancouver councillor, said Baird Ellan’s record on the bench is something the public

should know about. “There are a lot of decisions I think the public would be surprised at how lenient she was on the perpetrators,” he said. “Our top priority is naturally going to be to keep our children safe,” he said. Little said for that reason, the Tories chose to outline areas where young victims were “not protected by the justice system.” The website pointed to one 20-year-old decision where Baird Ellan handed an additional one-day sentence to a man who’d spent 51 days in jail for exposing himself to children for the 22nd time.

Little contrasted that with the Conservatives’ record in bringing in laws that increased minimum sentences for sex crimes against children. “We just think this is something we need to be discussing,” he said. Baird Ellan said the website “appears to be a sign of desperation.” She said the website presents an oversimplification of her decisions as a judge by taking them out of context and not mentioning legal precedents that bind judges’ decisions. “None of these cases See Attack page 9

safe effort on our part to try and retrieve him.” As darkness fell in the canyon around 7 p.m., searchers pulled back for the night and RCMP set up a police perimeter. They recovered the body without incident on Saturday morning. Even during the recovery attempt, more cliff jumpers were putting themselves in danger. “They were literally taking the body out and there are guys that are going down to climb and jump,” De Jong said. The summers of 2005, 2006, 2008 and 2013 all saw drowning deaths in Lynn Canyon but the number of fatalities has fallen of sharply since the District of North Vancouver started its park ranger program in 1993. “In 1993, before we had the ranger program, we had 17 people perish in the canyon over a 12-year-period,” said Gavin Joyce, the district’s manager of engineering, parks and facilities. “They have my full support and confidence. They do a wonderful job out there as evidenced by what’s happened over the last three or four years.”

The rangers try to make contact with as many people as possible entering the canyon to warn them about the very real dangers of cliff jumping. The district has in the past avoided enforcement as a method of keeping canyon visitors safe. “At this point we don’t have bylaws or fines in place. It’s the practicality of it — issuing tickets, chasing people down in a park — we believe the best approach at this point is with the ranger program, education and discouraging people from cliff jumping,” Joyce said. Firefighters have been called to Lynn Canyon for rescues 12 times so far in 2015, with five or six of those happening in a single hot weekend, according to Kennedy. The hot dry summer sent people flocking for the relief of the cool water but more and more folks are showing up in the canyon thanks to videos on social media going viral “glamourizing cliff jumping into Lynn Canyon,” Kennedy said. “We tried our best to get our message out there. It’s great that people want to come into our parks and enjoy them but there’s an inherent danger that goes

Kennedy also warned the water’s level of danger changes with the weather — something repeat visitors might forget. “We had these record low water conditions all

summer and some of these pools might have been quite accessible and fun to be in but after that last bout of rain, the discharge now coming down the rivers is quite significant. That changes everything in terms of dynamics of the river,” he said.

Fatal attraction L ynn Canyon has always been a place apart on the North Shore. For more than 70 years, teens have come to the canyon to test themselves against the elements in an environment of otherworldly beauty. The canyon’s danger has always been part of its lure. Those who come to jump the pools in the canyon in a route known as “the circuit” are young, still in the thrall of what psychologists refer to as “personal fable”: Bad things happen to others but they won’t happen to me. But bad things do happen, as they tragically did again this past weekend when an international student jumped to his death after being pinned underwater in one of the pools. He joins a list of young people who have died in similar circumstances in Lynn Canyon. Jumping from the canyon has always existed in a grey area. For the past two decades, authorities have taken the approach of warning and education rather than enforcement. For the most part it has worked.

MAILBOX

But who comes to the canyon and the risks they take has also changed in the past 20 years. Today, social media is full of glamorous, exciting photos of cliff jumping. Those taking risks don’t have the local knowledge they might have in the past about when to avoid the canyon — the times high water moves rocks and creates deadly currents that can pull swimmers under. They come with GoPros and iPhones that add to peer pressure to make deadly decisions. There are no easy answers about how to prevent death in the canyon. Based on statistics, the “harm reduction” approach taken by authorities so far appears sound. But it isn’t foolproof. That will be little comfort for the family of the young man who was the canyon’s most recent victim. We hope it will give pause to others — those who showed up to the pools to jump as soon as the canyon’s last victim was recovered. All thinking: it couldn’t happen to me.

Windstorm tree removal an extravaganza Dear Editor: During the windstorm, two eight-inch diameter trees blew down on West Vancouver municipal property abutting the parking lot for the building at 545 Clyde Ave. (On Thursday, Sept. 10), shortly after 9 a.m. when I arrived at my office in the building, there was a West Vancouver municipal crew here, dealing with the removal of these two small trees. The crew consisted of seven persons, including three flaggers, two tree cutters and two equipment operators. The rolling equipment they brought with them consisted of: one bucket truck, one pickup truck, one log chipper, one log

chip carrier and one dump truck. By 9:30 a.m. they were at work. At 10:30 a.m., having chipped up the branches and deposited a log in the parking lot, the flaggers surrounded the log with safety warning tape. Then the personnel and the equipment left the scene. They returned at 11:15 a.m., and brought in another dump truck, in addition to the equipment described above, towing a trailer on which sat a front-end loader. They proceeded to unload the front-end loader, presumably to pick up the small log and put it in one of the dump trucks. I wondered, as I

CONTACTUS

watched out my window, why they didn’t just assign two of the workers to lift up the log and put it in the truck. They must have read my mind, and they carried the log over to the dump truck and threw it in.

The next job was to drive the front-end loader back onto its trailer and secure it. The job was completed by 11:25 a.m. The workers then had a chat and by 11:35 a.m. they left.

I would guess that the entire operation — to remove two small trees — would have cost the West Vancouver taxpayers the equivalent of what I paid in property taxes last July. I estimate that I could

have cut down and bucked up the two small trees by myself in an hour — tops. A commercial tree service could have done the job in 30 minutes, with a crew of two. Richard Baker West Vancouver

Canadians on the hook for our national debt Dear Editor: Am I missing something? Our Prime Minister, Stephen Harper, is claiming the Conservative party is better able to handle the Canadian economy than are any of his political rivals. He is renowned for ducking questions and

likes to use the phrase “the fact of the matter is...” so, then, let us look at the facts. During the last nine years of the Liberal government (Chretien/ Martin) the accumulated federal debt was reduced by $59.5 billion. By comparison, during the nine years of Harper’s

regime, the accumulated federal debt increased by $121.7 billion to a whopping total of $616.4 billion. Check it out at debtclock.ca. In case you are wondering how this massive federal debt affects you personally, every man, woman and child in Canada is on the

hook for $17,264.70 and climbing, in order to pay it off and, make no mistake about it, it will have to be repaid, eventually. So now which political party do you think is better able to handle the Canadian economy? It’s a no-brainer! Ivor Bennett West Vancouver

Canada’s tattered democracy in a sorry state “Fundamental freedoms: Section 2(b) Freedom of thought, belief, opinion and expression, including freedom of the press and other media of communication.” — Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedoms, Constitution Act 1982 In its elaboration of the Charter wording, Heritage Canada says Canadians are free to create and express their ideas, gather to discuss them and communicate them widely to others. So why is it that, across the country, including here on the North Shore, quality Progressive Conservative candidates have allowed themselves to be barred from debating their party’s election platform at all-candidate meetings? Most particularly, I’d ask that question of former District of North Vancouver Coun. Mike Little — a man who was always ready to discuss his position on agenda items with his constituents. But the state of

Canada’s tattered democracy goes far beyond the current election campaign. So because hell hath no fury like a woman voter scorned, I hope you’ll forgive me for getting some things off my chest: Stephen Harper would not be where he is today had he not ridden on the coattails of hundreds of sincere Western Canadians who worked their butts off to get the Reform Party up and running. In B.C., the impetus for a new federal party came from a succession of scandals in both Liberal and Conservative governments.

It’s safe to say that the party that began in the basement rec room of a Victoria home might never have taken off had a few Albertans not seen its potential and persuaded Preston Manning to seize the opportunity and run with it. The impetus for Albertan voters was their dissatisfaction with the National Energy Program launched in 1980 by then prime minister Pierre Trudeau and his energy minister Marc Lalonde. Overriding all was that many Western Canadians felt the country was being governed for the benefit of Ontario and Quebec. North Shore Reformers were glad of the leadership coming out of Alberta and redoubled their efforts to “take back our federal government.” Slogans like The West Wants In, TripleE Senate and others in like tone were the order of the day. Triple-E, of course, meant Equal, Elected and Effective. I have no idea when Harper joined the party but my first memories of

him saw him at Manning’s right-hand as we worked the hustings to gain membership and work on Reform’s first election campaign. In hindsight and in light of more recent events, we should have paid him a good deal more attention. Except to make note of the fact that one of Harper’s earliest promises

was that he would no longer engage in the practice of appointing government-friendly individuals to the Senate, I’ll say no more about the people in the Upper Chamber. You have all seen the news ad nauseum. Suffice it to say, senators are not elected and the place is so riddled with patronage it can no longer

be effective as an arm’slength place of sober second thought and it sure isn’t equal. As for the other major slogan, you must be the judge as to whether or not the “West” is now “In.” From where I sit, what I see are scientists being muzzled and/or fired, the See more page 11

She added ensuring resources for mental health is another key to crime prevention. Max Cameron, a

political scientist at the University of British Columbia, said the attack website appears designed to motivate the base of Tory support in the Burnaby North – Seymour riding, who are more likely to “get riled up over issues of crime and justice.” Cameron said taking on Baird Ellan’s decisions continues a Tory pattern where “they haven’t hesitated to very publicly criticize the courts for decisions that have been made.” Liberal candidate Terry Beech said the Tory attack website is “certainly not

the type of campaign that I want to run.” “If I was Mike Little I’d be ashamed for using that tactic,” he said. Cameron said the fact parties are starting to pull the gloves off is a sign of a tight race in the newly created riding. “It’s a battleground riding that both the NDP and Conservatives want,” he said, adding campaigns are “going to get a lot nastier” the closer it gets to Oct. 19. “You can be peaking in the polls for weeks,” he added. “The only day it matters is election day.”

West has no say in foreign ownership From page 7 Department of Fisheries and Oceans denying biologist Alexandra Morton’s evidence that marine-based fish farms are polluting our pristine waterways, and a total lack of DFO enforcement over what happens to today’s abundant fisheries resource in the Capilano River. On another front, without needing any inconvenient discussion

in Parliament, let alone with British Columbians, Harper was free to announce — in Russia, no less — that his government had signed a 32-year Foreign Investment Promotion and Protection Agreement with China. Since the acronym for that was reduced to FIPA, I imagine the “Protection” part has little to do with protecting Canadian interests. Lastly — of the big ones

— the West certainly had no say as to the benefits or risks associated with the $15.1-billion bid by China’s CNOOC Ltd. for Calgary-based Nexen Inc., which Harper’s government approved. Would we have any voice at all if a Chinese company decided to drill for oil off our coastline? Or would we just have to pay millions in compensation if permission is denied? Heritage Canada

emphasizes, “In a democracy, people must be free to discuss matters of public policy, criticize governments and offer their own solutions to social problems.” Have you basked in that freedom over the past five to 10 years? Or, when you had the temerity to speak out, did you worry you’d end up on Stephen Harper’s list of “enemies” of his state? rimco@shaw.ca

From do-it-yourselfers in search of design inspiration to local residents looking for architects to work with to community members who simply want to see firsthand the inside of unique homes in their own backyards, theVancouver Modern HomeTour is back for

2015 and is promising something to suit all interests. “It’s really for everybody and we do that on purpose because we don’t want to make it an exclusive event. It’s a rare chance and a rare opportunity but it’s not exclusive to just one group. We want anybody who wants to do it to be able to go and see this work,” says Ken Shallcross, vice-president Modern Home Tours LLC, founded in 2010 and based in Austin,Texas. The company works to introduce modern architecture and living to people across North America and offers home tours in a number of cities across Canada and the United States. “There really is this desire, people want to see

The Vancouver tour has continued to be successful and the third annual edition is being presented this weekend, Saturday, Sept. 19, from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. “Vancouver is one of the cornerstone tours. That whole Pacific Northwest of Portland, Seattle and Vancouver are some of our favourite places to go because not only are there so many modern homes there and being built, but the modern community, you could say, between the architects and the home owners, people want

to show off their designs, people want to show off their homes. There is a high willingness of people to participate,” says Shallcross. This year’s tour was co-curated by Anicka Quin, editor-in-chief of Western Living Magazine, and is being held during the publication’s Design Week, running Sept. 17-30.

It’s featuring seven diverse homes, four of which are on the North Shore, chosen because they exemplify modern architecture and living. Among them is a 1960s Lewis post-and-beam home in West Vancouver that underwent a major renovation by LCI Design. Two homes on North Vancouver’s Sunshine Falls Lane are featured. One of which is the Cliffhanger

Residence, designed by Kevin Vallely. The three-level home sits on a 25-foot wide by 100-foot long site that drops nearly 60 feet over its 100-foot length. “The home basically had to be built into the land with that incline in mind. It’s a small townhouse but it’s right on the water and it’s absolutely gorgeous,” says Shallcross. The second home, on Sunshine Falls Lane,

was built by Wheeler Developments and designed by Schema Designs. The final North Shore home is a renovation on Melbourne Avenue in North Vancouver designed by Wexler Architecture. The three other homes on this year’s tour are in Vancouver and include: a West End 1,000 square foot condo; a Kerrisdale laneway house by Lanefab Design/

Build; and a University Endowment Lands home designed by Frits de Vries and built by Natural Balance Home Builders. Shallcross estimates the self-driving tour will take participants approximately four hours. Once again this year, the Chip and Shannon Wilson School of Design, part of Kwantlen Polytechnic

University, will serve as the tour’s non-profit partner and beneficiary. New this year is a White Rock Modern Home Tour, being held the following day, Sunday, Sept. 20, also from 11 a.m.-5 p.m., and featuring five homes. Combination tickets are available at a discounted price for those interested in attending both tours.

Have you been upstairs? The second floor at RONA is a MUST SEE! The Second Floor at North Vancouver’s RONA on First Street is humming with activity. Aimed at making the North Shore’s barbecue season a yearround experience, Mark Block, Manager of RONA’s Second Floor Outdoor Living Showroom, invites all-comers to meet him and his friendly team and to stroll through the patio displays to see Beachcomber hot-tubs, a variety of barbecues and accessories and a large selection of outdoor products for your garden. “Local forecasters are telling us we can look forward to a continuation of warmer temperatures and drier than usual weather,” said Block. “So with the addition of one of our firepit tables, you can still enjoy barbecues with family and friends,” he said. Together, Mark and his teammates, John Desaulniers and Mark Charland have over 30 years of experience with hot-tubs and every outdoor living accessory you have dreamed of seeing in your garden.

“Whether someone just wants to add a feature to their patio experience, or are renovating their entire outdoor space, it’s like designing another patio each time we work with a client,” they explained.

Nodding their agreement, Desaulniers and Charland say they enjoy weaving customers’ ideas into their product recommendations.

As one client said, “The sales process and eventual delivery were awesome. We were really happy with the experience.” Beachcomber hot-tub models range from a small two-person unit to one that accommodates up to eight people. Beachcomber’s energyefficient Hybrid option even mounts the motor on the outside of the unit, which allows all four sides of the tub to be sealed.

“Our customers can browse through our Second-Floor displays and we’re also on hand to answer visitors’ questions,” said Block.

And to complement your new Beachcomber, where would a patio be without a barbecue that has all the latest bells and whistles? “Come sit a while in one of our Second Floor Outdoor Living showroom patios,” Mark said with a grin. “You’ll be impressed by our range of barbecues and accessories – Weber; Broil King; Napoleon, Sterling, Char-Broil® and Black Olive – our Second Floor has something for everyone,” he said.

A NorthVancouver woman and her partner took away the ultimate prize last week after being announced the winners of the $2.1 million PNE Prize Home. Jill Denison of North Vancouver and partner Robert Rawson of Vancouver were drawn from nearly 90,000 entries Thursday evening by Vancouver Mayor Gregor Robertson, winning the PNE’s 81st annual prize home, something the couple was shocked to discover after their names and ticket number were announced on the news. “We thought we’d just tune into the news to see who won the home,” laughed Denison. “The ticket was at my place in North Van and I was over in south Van having

who had each put in $25 towards the draw, then headed straight for the PNE grounds to claim their prize. The home was just closing up for the night but was reopened when the two winners showed up. The three-bedroom

3,080-square-foot home built by Karoleena will be located on a lake view lot in Naramata, in B.C.’s Okanagan and will feature indoor furnishings from Lane Home Furnishings. See Prize page 18

Denison, who said she’s “never won anything before,” said the news came as quite a shock and that both she and Robert need time to process the whole thing before deciding what exactly to do with their $2.1 million prize. “We haven’t had time to process it all, so we have no

plans at the moment,” said Denison, leaving a word of advice for prospective ticket buyers in the future. “I have been buying them for 12 years, $25. So never give up.” The couple is expected to take possession of the home in December or January 2016 depending on weather conditions.

Author grateful to man who saved her CHRISTINE LYON clyon@nsnews.com

If it weren’t for the quick actions of a helpful stranger, Penny McDonald might not be writing today. She might not even be alive. McDonald was waiting for her granddaughter’s soccer game to start in Lynn Valley Park on Sept. 15, 2013, when she suffered a ruptured brain aneurysm. Fortunately a man, who was with a woman and two children, heard her cries for help and immediately

called 9-1-1. She had two life-saving surgeries at Vancouver General Hospital and, after three weeks in intensive care, she returned home to recover. McDonald had a letter published in the North Shore News in November 2013 in which she thanked her savior, but she got no response. Two years later, she has achieved a lifelong dream and published a youth mystery novel entitled The Emerald Collar, which she is launching on Friday, Sept. 18 from 7 to 9 p.m.

at Lynn Valley library in the Community Room. “While that may not be extraordinary for some people, it was a miracle for me,” McDonald says. She is hopeful the man who came to her rescue (whose name started with a “J”) will catch word of her book launch and get in touch. She says she would love to give one of her novels to him and his family. McDonald adds she is “blessed to be able to work on a sequel” to the Emerald Collar. She plans to publish The Dolphin Ring next year.

PARENTING

Election season is a chance to learn We are currently involved in a very long election campaign. There will be ads, billboards, news stories and debates. No matter where you go the conversation is likely to turn to politics. And what, you wonder, has that to do with parenting? It matters because how we vote and who we elect can have a profound impact on our society and meeting the needs of children and families. Pay attention. What are your concerns? Who will best address them? Much as it sounds hokey, the truth is that every vote counts and every election helps determine the world we will live in and leave to our children and grandchildren. You may choose to become informed so that you can vote intelligently. You may choose to get involved with the campaign of your preferred candidate. You may choose to work on election day.

Kathy Lynn

Parenting Today

Whatever your choice, let the kids know what is happening. Our children learn by watching us.When we get involved in the electoral process and let them see our involvement they grow up knowing that they have a civic duty to pay attention, to vote, to work on a campaign and possibly to eventually run for office. Let’s say you decide to put some time in on a campaign. You’re going to deliver lawn signs to supporters.Your 12-year-old

would be a perfect partner for the task. He can help you find addresses and will love placing the signs on the lawn. On election day, make sure your children know that you are going to vote. If possible, bring them along to the polling place. This is also a great time to open the conversation about your political beliefs. Kids today are aware of the some of the issues, even young children know about environmental concerns. They are certainly aware of possible education issues. And teens, who are worried about jobs and eventually buying a house, are concerned about the economy. So, you have an entry to talk to your kids about election issues. Show them the campaign brochures that come into the house.Talk about them. Help them learn See Engage page 26

how to distinguish fact from political spin. I’m not talking about turning every evening into a civics lecture, but a casual awareness and mention can lead to some meaningful conversation. If your children are teens, be prepared for a political argument so be clear on your stand before you start this process. The average teen will love to take you on. After all, they take you on about everything else, why not politics? And if you are a strong supporter of one party, odds are your teen will argue vociferously for the opposition. Just listen, be respectful, state your point of view and don’t panic. A lot of this argument is simply for the sake of debate. There is also a role for

schools to play in teaching kids about elections, democracy, the workings of government, campaigning and voting. A non-partisan organization at studentvote.ca will offer teachers materials to use during the campaign. The program is in full swing and there are already more than 3,000 schools registered from across the country. I recall during one election a mother at one of my presentations was beside herself. She and her husband had been longtime supporters of the NDP. Their children knew that and had watched them work for the party. And now, here was their outspoken 15-year-old sounding off about the Conservatives. Oh, he had facts and figures and the passion that only a committed teen can exhibit.

When I saw this mother the following week she was grinning. She told me that she had learned that her son had quietly been working for the NDP candidate. So all the talk was just that, talk. Mind you, our kids will not always choose our political path. I bet not all of you vote as your parents did. Our job is to introduce our children to the path of democracy.Teach them to pay attention and vote, but vote intelligently. Then when they are adults and making the decisions that will impact us when we’re seniors, we are certain they are making them responsibly. We need more spaces like the one at 144 Lonsdale Ave. There’s something about that narrow, intimate room that seems to appeal to straightforward and approachable restaurant tenants, the kind that produce reliably tasty and affordable food with a nononsense attitude. Before its current occupants, 144 Lonsdale was home to La Tasca Lounge, which offered up an eclectic assortment of international dishes produced by affable, humble chef Giorgio Prego. La Tasca was sadly short-lived and my email efforts to contact chef Prego to find out what prompted the sudden closure of his diminutive diner fell into the spiraling abyss of cyberspace. I eagerly awaited new signs of life in that room, which sat empty for months, hoping that it would be taken over by another independent restaurateur. Happily, it eventually was. Martin and Shari O’Neill, the cheery and welcoming husband-and-wife team that have reinvigorated this tiny bit of Lower Lonsdale real estate, have recently opened the cutely, if somewhat campily, named Meat at O’Neills, an eatery singularly

dedicated to the provision of mighty tasty, comfortoriented sandwiches. My brother-in-law Tom, a charismatic and forward-thinking young guy, owns and operates a very successful collection of sandwich shops in Glasgow. He calls the business Piece, which is a Glaswegian colloquialism for sandwich, revealing one of the key insights into the success of his business: don’t take yourself too seriously. I have gleaned a few valuable insider tips from Tom over the years on the operation of a viable sandwich shop. Aside from maintaining a healthy dose of humility (making a good sandwich is pretty much within everyone’s grasp, really, so turning the experience of eating one in your shop into a pretentious, unduly complicated or pompous affair is simply not going to fly), it is also important to ensure that you can stand behind 100 per cent of the ingredients that go into your creations. If you want to distinguish your shop from a certain ubiquitous chain named after an underground mode of mass urban transit, you need your ingredients to positively sing with every bite, showcasing the care and attention to detail that make your sandwiches artisanal rather than cookie-cutter. I was pleased to discover on my recent visit to the North Shore’s newest casual dining destination that the O’Neills have embraced these important principles of sandwich artistry (or is it sandwich craftsmanship, more to the point?).The menu is small and focused, allowing the O’Neills to ensure consistent quality and care across each offering.

Sandwich offerings include pulled pork, braised beef brisket, bratwurst with sauerkraut, meatloaf, three-cheese grilled cheese, and a handful of reasonably priced breakfast sandwiches, which are available all day (an Egg and Tomato breakfast sandwich, served in a bun, is just $3.50). Meat at O’Neills has about 20 seats or so, mostly surrounding a large, rustic communal table that spans the middle of the room. A few additional seats line a small counter protruding from the left wall. It was a beautifully sunny weekend afternoon when I visited, so I opted for takeout. Colder season calls for hearty, savoury soup When the days start to shorten and the crispness of fall is in the air, my love of cooking kicks into overdrive. After a long, hot summer of salads and meals off the grill, I can’t wait to fill my big green cast iron pot with a savory soup or stew, filling the house with all kinds of lovely aromas. Add a simple tossed salad and some nice grainy bread and you have a perfect, heartwarming dinner. Leftovers will only taste better the next day since the flavours will deepen and mellow after an overnight stay in the refrigerator. Stuffed Pepper Soup 1 lb lean, ground beef or ground turkey thigh 2 Tbsp olive oil, divided use Kosher salt and freshly ground black pepper 1 cup chopped onion ¾ cup chopped red bell pepper ¾ cup chopped green bell pepper 2 cloves garlic, minced ½ tsp dried basil

Romancing the Stove Two 398-ml cans diced tomatoes One 398-ml can tomato sauce 1¾ cups low-sodium beef broth 2 Tbsp chopped, fresh parsley Pinch of dried oregano 1 tsp white sugar 1 or 2 cups cooked white or brown rice Shredded cheddar or mozzarella cheese to garnish Heat one tablespoon of olive oil in a large pot over medium heat; add the ground beef or turkey, season with salt and pepper and cook until browned,

breaking the meat up with a wooden spoon as it cooks. Drain off all the fat and turn the meat out onto a plate lined with a paper towel; set aside. In the same pot, heat the remaining tablespoon of olive oil over medium heat; add the onions and bell peppers and sauté them for three minutes, then add the garlic and sauté for 30 seconds longer. Add the tomatoes, tomato sauce, beef broth, parsley, basil, oregano and the cooked meat. Bring soup to a gentle boil, then reduce heat, cover the pot and simmer for 30 minutes.Taste and adjust seasoning if necessary. Stir in the cooked rice (if you like a thinner soup only use one cup of rice). Alternatively you can place a scoop of cooked rice in each serving bowl and ladle the hot soup over it.This is a good idea if you plan on having leftovers since the rice will become mushy if the soup isn’t eaten right away. Sprinkle shredded cheese over top of the hot soup. Makes about six servings. See Cornstarch page 29

Each was tasty in its own right, but my favourite of the lot was the Braised Brisket, a fresh and chewy, oblong Turkish bun (the bread of choice for the meat sandwiches at this shop) stuffed with a generous portion of tender, fall-apart, nicely caramelized beef that offered full, round flavours of red wine braising liquid and green herbs. The brisket was topped with house-made crispy coleslaw. A close second on the flavour chart was a spicy Mexican Meatloaf sandwich, also served on a Turkish bun, with tomato sauce and melted provolone cheese. The meatloaf had a complex depth of flavour attributable, presumably, to the addition of smoked bacon and spicy pork

sausage to the ground beef that formed the loaf. The three-cheese grilled cheese, served on golden brown, sliced granary bread, was a masterful example of a proven classic, its blend of gruyere, fontina and red Leicester achieving just the right balance of indulgent creaminess and tangy bite. The final sandwich, the Bratwurst with Sauerkraut on a soft, long bun, was also enjoyable with its good quality sausage sourced from Black Forest Deli, but for my taste, perhaps because I have been grilling these at home all summer, I would have appreciated a touch more grill marking/caramelization on the brat. The restaurant’s website reports that hearty stews will make their way to the menu this fall. Our four sandwiches, with three bags of chips and four sodas, was $48 before gratuity. Olmstead ready to represent

Family bonds link RugbyWorld Cup rookie to North Vancouver ANDY PREST aprest@nsnews.com

The beard certainly fits with the Canadian motif and the name sounds familiar to longtime North Shore rugby fans, but the voice sounds pure Australian. So who is this Evan Olmstead guy who is about to make his Rugby World Cup debut with Canada’s senior men’s national team? He’s a North Shore boy at heart, blazing a path to rugby glory that would have made his father — former Capilano Rugby Club president and longtime club supporter John Olmstead — very proud. Evan was born at Lions Gate Hospital and lived in North Vancouver until he was three years old when John — a Canadian through and through — took a job in Sydney, Australia. “It was initially supposed

to be just for two years, and then that became four, and that became 21,” Evan explains with a distinct Australian accent. “We pretty much just stayed.” John, however, wouldn’t let the family forget two of his most beloved passions — rugby and Canada. The Olmstead family kept tabs on the Canadian national rugby team, taking in all of the squad’s games when Australia hosted the World Cup in 2003. In 2007 the family took a vacation to France to take in the World Cup again. Sadly it would be the last full family vacation for the Olmsteads as John died of a heart attack in 2008.The news shook communities on opposite sides of the world. “Dad had two wakes — one was in Australia and one was at the Capilano club,” Evan says. There’s now a plaque in the stands at

Klahanie Park bearing John Olmstead’s name, a special place for the family. “I think he made a lot of really good friends playing there. I think friends went to play there because of dad. They were just a good group of guys, I guess.” Evan, meanwhile, developed a passion for his father’s sport and as a teenager grew into a standout rugby player. The Australian U20 national team was sniffing around, inquiring about his services, and Evan had a choice to make: would he run with the wallabies or would he buy a toque and throw it into the ring back in Canada? A lot of factors went into his decision. Australia has an elite team, higher ranked than Canada, but it would be harder to make the lineup and stay at the top level. The Olmstead family wanted him to honour their heritage

— mother Coleen is straightup Canadian too — and wear the Maple Leaf. In the end, Evan says it wasn’t a difficult choice at all. “To represent the country where I’m from, all my family…. I went for it,” he says. “I’ve always been very attached to Canada despite living in Australia and sounding not particularly Canadian. I had that history watching the team, chasing them around.” Now 24, Evan first played for Canada at the U20 level, suiting up at the World Junior Trophy tournament held in Georgia in 2011. After a few seasons on Australian clubs he found himself searching for a team and landed with the Prairie Wolf Pack for the Canadian Rugby Championship season in 2014. Evan thrived, helping the Wolf Pack to their best-ever finish and earning himself a selection onto Canada’s “A” team, one step below the senior national team. He showed well, eventually forcing his way onto the

senior team to make his debut in the 2015 Pacific Nations Cup against Samoa on July 29 in Toronto. He’s now earned four caps for Canada as well as a coveted spot on the World Cup team. All in all, it’s worked out pretty well for the North Shore boy. “I’m absolutely thrilled,” he says. “It’s a great group of guys, it’s a very special team, the coaching staff is really good, I’m improving a lot as a player just being with these guys pointing out little bits and pieces to work on. I’m in better shape than I’ve been in in my life…. Definitely, without a doubt, it was the right decision.” The World Cup, hosted by England and Wales, kicks off Friday with Canada getting into the action Saturday against Ireland in Cardiff,Wales. Canada’s other matches, all shown live on TSN, will be played Sept. 26 against Italy, Oct. 1 against France, and Oct. 6 against Romania. “It’s really exciting See Father page 34

Father would have been thrilled

From page 32

— we’ve got our World Cup kit, it’s all branded with the logo,” Evan says. The roster hasn’t been set for the first fixture but Evan, playing lock, is hoping he can bull his way to as much playing time as possible. “I think I’m the least-capped player on the team. I’m making my run at the right time though…. I don’t want to get to the World Cup and just be a squad member. I want to get on the starting team, I want to play as many

minutes as I can get.” Whatever playing time he gets, Evan says he’s happy to represent the rugby club his father helped build alongside fellow Capilano World Cup players Jamie Cudmore, Jason Marshall and Harry Jones. Aside from a few youth games during family vacations back to Canada, Evan has never played for Capilano but he’s thrilled that the club has basically adopted him as an honourary member. He’s got an inside source on the North Shore — his

grandmother still lives in North Vancouver. “She reads (the North Shore News) a lot — any time there’s a mention of the Capilanos she cuts out the article and sends it to us in Australia,” he says with a laugh. The jersey from Evan’s first game with the Canadian national team carries special significance for the Olmstead family. “I knew that that first jersey would be a special one that I’d get framed up and put it in the house,” he says.

“That would be a little bit of a tribute to dad and his support and encouragement over the years.” Evan has a pretty good idea of what his father would think about his boy playing for Canada in a Rugby World Cup. “He would have been absolutely thrilled,” Evan says. “He would have been absolutely over the moon. He loves rugby, most of all, and obviously was a big supporter of mine. I don’t think anything would have made him happier.”
