Happy New Year NorthBound readers. Good Crimbo? Aye, us too, as it goes. Legendary filmmaker Ken Loach is often revered by folk in South Yorkshire, perhaps mainly for his contribution to the arts as director of Kes in 1969. His views tend to align with those that live here, values that, by and large, Sheffield has always held as a city and that put people first. He’s also an honorary doctorate of Sheffield Hallam University, where he addressed your own editor in 2016 at his graduation ceremony. “Those graduating today face a difficult and unstable world with challenges and insecurity ahead.” More than three years on, Ken’s prediction is spot on as I write this just days after one of the most divisive General Election campaigns in recent memory. With the national divide at an all-time high, we can at least have a little bit of civic pride, can’t we? Our big feature for this issue looks towards the year 2020, and how you can make the most of what our little spot in God’s County has to offer over the next twelve months. There’s also an interview with Graham Fellows’ hilarious character John Shuttleworth to get stuck into ahead of his live shows in 2020.

at the UK Festival Awards Tramlines Festival 2019 has received the huge accolade of Best Metropolitan Festival at the prestigious UK Festival Awards 2019. It scooped the award for the second time (last in 2011) over big names including TRNSMT and All Points East at a ceremony held at The Troxy in London on Thursday 5th December. Tramlines Festival was also nominated in the category of Best Major Festival alongside Download, Glastonbury, Wireless and Latitude. Building on its continued success, Tramlines Festival 2020 will take place in Hillsborough Park from Friday 31st July – Sunday 2nd August 2020 for its 12th edition. Headliners for the 2020 event will be announced in February 2020, but based on the hard-hitting 2019 line up featuring Two Door Cinema Club, Lewis Capaldi, Rag N Bone Man, Courteeners and Nile Rodgers & Chic, another exciting year is guaranteed. The UK Festival Awards 2019 also presented the Sarah Nulty Women in Festivals Award to Jenny Hamada of AEG Presents. This award was created in 2018 in honour of the late Tramlines’ director, Sarah Nulty who passed away just weeks before the 2018 event. Since last year, Sarah has received
a whole host of posthumous awards including a civic award from The Lord Mayor of Sheffield, an Outstanding Contribution Gong from the UK’s Association of Independent Festivals (AIF) and an Outstanding Contribution to Sheffield award at the 2019 Exposed Awards. Tramlines operations director, Timm Cleasby said: “This is a truly amazing moment for Tramlines and a great recognition of all the hard work over the last decade or so, we’re chuffed to bits. Being named alongside big hitters such as Download and Glastonbury in the Best Major Festival category also shows just how far we’ve come as an event. “It was fantastic to see Jenny Hamada win the Sarah Nulty Women in Festivals Award, Sarah contributed hugely to making Tramlines what it is now and it’s amazing to see the continued acknowledgement for her work. This award is big for Sheffield too and means a lot for the local scene. Many thanks!”

The Campaign For Real Ale raises thousands for charity
The 45th annual Sheffield Steel City Beer and Cider Festival took place last October, with more than 6,000 visitors attending the annual bash over four days down at Kelham Island Museum. Each year, members of the festival planning committee select a local charity to support through collections, donations of unused beer tokens and charity quizzes. The charity chosen at the last event was the Burton Street Foundation which was the recipient of £2,500 from the Campaign For Real Ale as a result of the festival’s donations. The Burton Street Foundation is a community benefit society based in Hillsborough and offers a high standard of care and support to people with learning disabilities and their siblings. All donations received from October’s beer festival will be used by the Burton Street Foundation for their sibling support work, enabling them to support a large number of children who have siblings with a disability. The aim of the sibling support initiative is to give siblings the opportunity to make friends and develop a peer support network, learn about their sibling’s disability, and learn how best to manage their relationship with their sibling. Following his conviction for a robbery that took place in February 1791, Londoner Spence Broughton was sentenced to hanging, and his body was then transported and left to rot on Attercliffe Common in a gibbet for 36 years. Boughton and his partner-in-crime John Oxley travelled up north in order to target a mail coach that operated between Sheffield and Rotherham. They managed to steal a French bill of exchange, for which they enlisted the help of a French dictionary in order to cash. This was worth £123, which would have been the equivalent of around £17,000 in today’s prices. The robbery took place at Ickles, on the Rotherham end of Attercliffe Common, and although the pair seemed to have got away with this crime, Broughton was later recognised by a policeman and consequently tried at York Assizes and sentenced to death. Broughton’s body reportedly attracted 40,000 visitors on just the first day and went on to make the local landlords a fortune. A complaint from a nearby landowner of constant trespassers on his land heading to view the grisly scene saw the corpse removed and buried in 1827. www.NorthBoundmagazine.co.uk | 13

Electric City Sheffield’s CityTaxis willgofully electricby 2025
City Taxis, the UK’s third largest fleet of private hire vehicles has unveiled its ambitious sustainability plans to deliver an all-electric fleet of circa 2,000 cars, no later than 2025, starting with 700 by the end of 2020.
The announcement reflects months of work building a partnership with Sheffield Council and iCabbi.com. iCabbi is a subsidiary of RCI Bank and Services of Groupe Renault, who provide an intelligent taxi booking and dispatch platform which allows independent taxi firms to compete against global competitors that have disrupted the industry. Speaking about their ambitious plans, Arnie Singh, managing director of City Taxis, said: “I’m very excited. I want Sheffield to have the first all-electric taxi fleet in the UK. If we are going for it, let’s go for it as a city and do it right. “City Taxis believe in the importance of contributing to the local economy, whilst recognising our responsibility towards taking care of our environment. City is an ethical employer which provides fairer working conditions and greater employment opportunities for the communities where we live. “I want to thank Renault, iCabbi and Sheffield city council for their support in helping us put this initiative to the top of our agenda.” Despite being the only city in the UK to boast a National Park within its boundaries, Sheffield is behind the curve on migrating to a low emission infrastructure. Out of 10,385 charging locations in the UK, Sheffield currently has only 33, equating to 0.3% of the UK’s charging infrastructure. The lack of charging infrastructure creates a barrier to the wider city region’s objectives to be greener.
The introduction of City's unique new charging hubs will potentially double the city's available charging points. The proposed hubs will provide a more engaging experience for taxi drivers and the public, who can also use the stations to get refreshments, wi-fi and an opportunity to relax and take a break. Paul Gosney, business development director for City Taxis explains: “We are committed to transitioning our entire fleet to electric by 2025, however we believe we can get there much faster than that, with an ambitious aim of 700 cars in the marketplace in 2020. Today we have invited Sheffield's business, political and academic communities to join us in fast tracking Sheffield to an electric future. “The charging hub we have unveiled is a converted shipping container, allows for quick mobilisation with the potential to be placed at a dozen locations around the city. We believe that migrating to electric vehicles will happen quicker if the end user has a better experience. “Moving our fleet to electric will provide cleaner air within our community and following City's recent announcement that we are also moving into food and product delivery, the local low emission approach is also expected to give customers a conscience free way of enjoying the goods delivered to their home.”

For a picturesque nature and heritage trail, the Rivelin Valley trail is one of the most unique around and it can be be enjoyed at any time of the year. On most days, you will find many types of plants, trees, birds and animals, as well as historical and archaeological remains of watermills and mill dams which date from the 16th to the 19th century and played a key role in the cutlery and steel industry in the city of Sheffield. The valley has slowly been reclaimed by nature since the watermills fell in to disrepair.

Arguably the most anticipated of city developments is the old ski village up at Parkwood Springs, which has been abandoned since 2012 and has suffered from a series of fires. Last year, Sheffield city council agreed a 150 year lease with Extreme Destinations an ‘internationally recognised’ sport and leisure destination which will ‘rival the best in the world’, bring 400 new jobs and one million new visitors to Sheffield. The 21-hectare site, with Extreme at the helm, will be developed into a modern ski slope, numerous mountain biking trails, a hub building with shops, bars and restaurants as well as visitor accommodation, alongside a major international operator. A major mixed-use development is proposed for the Adelphi square site in Attercliffe, comprising of bars, restaurants, shops, housing, a themed meeting venue, workspace and a branded hotel. The English Institute of Sport Sheffield will also create a 100-bedroom hotel centred on the needs of athletes and paraathletes and support staff who use the facilities at Sheffield Olympic Legacy Park, helping to attract more Olympic and Paralympic squads to the city. Work started in December of an improved Community Stadium, currently used by Sheffield Eagles Rugby League Club and Sheffield United Women Football Club.

Still going strong in his 80s, legendary filmmaker Ken Loach (Kes, I, Daniel Blake, Looking For Eric) is back with another damning indictment of the issues that working class people face in today’s society with new film Sorry We Missed You. Ken Loach needs very little introduction to anyone who’s been near a TV set or a cinema screen any time in the last 50 years. He made Kes and Cathy Come Home in the 60s, and went on to make pioneering and sometimes even banned documentaries and films in the 70s. More recently he made his most successful film, Looking For Eric in 2009, and just when it seemed he was about to announce his retirement, he confounded us all by releasing the powerful drama, I, Daniel Blake, in 2016.

He has won the Palme D’Or twice, which is a record, BAFTA and BIFI awards and numerous lifetime achievement awards too. His latest film, Sorry We Missed You, is in cinemas now, and Mark Perkins couldn’t believe his luck when we asked him to have a chat with Ken. Trying not to get all fan-boy, he managed to hold it together to ask him a few questions.

I’m looking at your latest film, Sorry We Missed You, as something of a companion piece to I, Daniel Blake. Is that a fair point? Very much so, yes. When we were doing the research for I, Daniel Blake, we visited several food banks and we were struck by the number of people who needed food provided by charity, but were actually working. If they didn’t have that food, they wouldn’t eat. It’s something we tend not to talk about, but the rise in the working poor is a huge feature of our society that we tend to ignore. Paul Laverty, who wrote the script, did a lot of the research, and went to meet self-employed delivery drivers. They were worried about talking to begin with, but he won their trust. He went out in the delivery vans with them, talking to them about their experiences. One man had a photo of his children, stuck to the dashboard. Paul made a comment about his kids. “I only see them in here,” he replied. “They’re in bed when I leave, and they’re in bed when I get home.” In the film, the lead character, Ricky, is a driver who gets fined if he makes a mistake and is always under pressure to make deliveries on time. His wife is a care worker. We heard their stories too. They said they don’t have time to do the job properly and they’re on very low pay. Many of them don’t get paid for travel time. They may be given a 20 or 30 minute slot to help someone out of bed and do everything else for them in the time allowed, then the rest of the time is travelling, which is unpaid.”

Is it fair to say your films have always been about social issues? Well, no, they are stories really. You can’t make a film out of an issue. You need to find the story about the characters and the conflict to tell first. It has to live in people. If it doesn’t live in people, it doesn’t work as a film. The film that many people still associate you with is Kes which was recently voted the seventh best film of the 20th Century. I went to an anniversary screening of Kes, in Staveley, with an appearance by David Bradley, who played Billy Kasper. He told us how at the end of the film, when he found the dead kestrel, you let him think it was the bird he’d been working with. Yes, it was a bit of a dirty trick, but we needed the reaction. David Bradley was brilliant, and he’s a lovely man and I have a lot of respect for him. Also, the boys who got caned weren’t told that was going to happen, but we paid them an extra 10 shillings, and they seemed quite happy after that. In those days, getting the cane was just part of school life. I did a number of other films with Barry Hines, one about a gamekeeper and two about the pits, called The Price Of Coal. He was a lovely man, stuck down by dementia well before his time.

It’s been well over 50 years that you have been making films. How would you say making films has changed over that time? Essentially it hasn’t changed at all. You arrange for something to happen and you photograph it. The basics of filmmaking stay the same. It’s about finding the right story that’s about a greater truth than just the characters on screen. It’s about working with great writers. It’s about finding people who will bring the story to life and that who the audience will care about and believe in. Too often films these day are about film stars. I can think of several actors who have given what I think of as their best performances in one of your films. Is there a secret to achieving this? Well, you do pick up lots of tricks and ways of doing things over the years. Often, what you don’t say to the actors is as important as what you do say. You just create an atmosphere and a context in which they can live the story. There’s a lot of nonsense in filmmaking actors having special caravans and special cars, but it actually gets in the way. I have a very stable team around me and we’re just a very normal group of people, working together. We know everybody’s names; it’s a very secure, reassuring and creative atmosphere. There’s got to be a creative energy as well.

People must feel free to express themselves, but equally it has to be disciplined. These people are all skilled craftsmen and women. You work closely with the cameraman, and the sound engineer and the designer, but it all starts with the writer, who is the most important person of all. I’ve worked with Paul Laverty for over a quarter of a century. You need to be close politically and trust each other and share the same attitude to film. It’s almost as though you see things from the same pair of eyes. What were your influences when you started out working in TV and then film? I loved films like Vittorio De Sica’s Bicycle Thieves, well, all the Italian neo -realists really. I’ve always tried, just like they did, to find the drama in the everyday lives of people. That’s really a common thread in my work. I must just ask you about Looking For Eric, one of my absolute favourite films of yours. How on earth did that come about? Yes, we really enjoyed that! I thought someone was pulling my leg when they said Eric Cantona wanted to speak with me about making a film. It was not long after he’d left Manchester United. It was extraordinary, like royalty had got in touch. Well, much better than royalty. Eric was such a magnificent player – such an original player. He transcended his club in people’s imagination and he was also great fun to work with and enjoyed a giggle. The lead actor, Steve Evets, didn’t know that Eric was even going to be in the film. He himself is a massive fan of Eric Cantona, and we kept it from him, so when Cantona appears standing behind him in the film, his shock and surprise is totally genuine. And again, another brilliant script from Paul. There were quite few comedians in the film, who I’ve seen play in the Lescar in Sheffield; Mick Ferry and Justin Moorhouse for example. That does seem to be something of a theme throughout your work; casting comics to act in the films. Yes that’s true. I like working with them. When we did The Price Of Coal, written by Barry Hines, that was full of South Yorkshire comedians. People like Bobby Knutt and Duggie Brown, who had also played the milkman in Kes. How do you think you’ve managed to keep making films for so long? I toyed with retiring, and making films is a big effort, so it won’t be long delayed now. I’m 83, and there comes a point when you have to recognise reality. But it’s not something you give up lightly, because it’s such a privilege to be able to make film. Film is such a wonderful medium to express yourself in. It’s images, it’s drama, it’s characters, its comedy, it’s tragedy, it’s human relationships, it’s storytelling and it’s wonderful. Walkley Wanderer Graham Fellows’ hilarious creation, John Shuttleworth, is back with two Sheffield shows in 2020 There’s a new kid in town, playing his trusty Yamaha keyboard and telling tales of park cafes, relatives in Rotherham and the bus to Crookes. Well actually, it’s an old kid who’s back for more. He just can’t resist entertaining and telling stories. Walkley’s John Shuttleworth is back with a new tour called, erm, ‘John Shuttleworth’s Back’, which includes two dates at the Crucible Theatre – one on 6 February and on 26 May. The title of his tour is not just stating the obvious; he is actually having trouble with his back. We sent our writer Mark Perkins along to have a chat with the man behind the character, Graham Fellows. It’s been a while, but it’s somehow reassuring to have John Shuttleworth back in town. How has he been since we last heard from him? Well, I was going to call the new tour ‘Old Four Eyes Is Back’, but I found out Mike Harding had done that before me! The theme running through the show is that John’s got a bad back, which chimes nicely with me, as I have got a bad back too. What have you been up to in the time since John last played here in his hometown? A lot of the year has been taken up with writing John’s book, called Two Margarines and Other Domestic Dilemmas. It’s a novel, and it’s a day in the life of John Shuttleworth. It’ll be on sale ahead of the publishing date at the live shows. John has spent time talking into a dictaphone as he goes about his day, solving the various domestic dilemmas he comes across. One of them being how to cope with his wife Mary, who is annoyed with him for seemingly talking to himself all day. There’s lots of new merchandise, which some people really seem to like. I kind of miss the old days, where John was a sort of cottage industry. We used to do mail out, with me and my kids mailing out flyers and sitting round sticking stamps on envelopes. Nowadays it’s just one big email. There’s some new BBC Radio material too. I’ve recorded a new episode of The Shuttleworths, which went out at Christmas. I’ve been busy performing as Graham Fellows too, on my ‘Out Of Character’ tour, which is something I always knew I’d do one day, and I also did a whole tour reviving my first ever creation, Jilted John.

So, can you give us an idea of what’s in store for the new shows? There’s a couple of new songs, plus some older established ones that are overdue for being revived. One of my problems is I’ve got too many songs, it’s hard to choose. I’m lucky with John’s character - if the show is all over the place, as it could well be, it doesn’t really matter - the ramshackle nature of it is all part of the show. If anyone fancies coming to see John outside Sheffield, I’m playing Buxton too, but I do love the Crucible. I have very fond memories of meeting Brain Glover when it first opened. I told him i wanted to be an actor, but he tried to put me off. “Ooooh, no. You don’t want to do that. It’s very hard work.” Also seeing Alan Rickman in the Studio Theatre, being really up close, that made me want to take up acting as well. I do worry occasionally that people I meet in Sheffield think he is real. They react to him as if he really does live in Sheffield. It’s great, but it does put me under pressure to get all the local aspects of John’s character just right. I always try to talk to my family in Sheffield before I play, just to find out if there are any issues that John should know about. It’s not so important in Devon, but I’d be in trouble if I got it wrong here. I’ve realised that the Sheffield I write about actually isn’t Sheffield, it’s Louth, where I live. When I visualise the man cutting a key, it’s the man in Louth in my mind, not Sheffield. It’s a kind of fantasy Sheffield that I write about. A market town version of Sheffield. Have you any future plans for John beyond the tour? I might do a book signing tour in autumn, now John’s a proper author. I did start making a film over ten years ago about John and an electric car. I actually filmed some at the sheltered accommodation in Broomhill with my dad and I want to finish that and tour with it. I love my job. I’m in this niche world of having a character, John, who I can tour with, but I can also be myself, and play shows as Graham Fellows. I can sell some seats, and sell a few CDs, It’s lovely. It’s how I began and it’s how I wanted to end up really. I do feel a little uneasy with selling out the City Hall or the Crucible, so maybe before too long, John will end up playing the hospice for real. ATasteofthe Mediterranean LocatedinFoxValley’s IndependentQuarter, Neo-Med’stakesyou on a voyageofthe culturessurrounding MediterraneanSea Spending just five minutes in the company of Neo-Med owner Alessandro, it’s clear that he, and the rest of the team at Neo-Med in Fox Valley, have an incredible passion for food. Mediterranean food, in particular, cooked with great attention to detail and care, with a dash of nostalgia tossed in too. Seeing my face light up when recommended a bottle of Mythos Greek lager, Alessandro explains: “Since we opened a year ago, the response has been excellent - they have the same reaction as you when they see Mythos, souvlaki, kleftiko, things they’re used to hearing on holiday – it brings back that feeling of nostalgia. We serve traditional food like our nanas used to make it. It’s good, old honest food.” Alessandro and his family moved to the UK from southern Italy in 1997 where they settled in Middleton, Manchester. “Cooking for myself at university is where it started,” he tells us. “Going from mum’s kitchen to eating pot noodles every day… I was like ‘mum, how do I make a bolognese?’ That’s how it started. “Once you learn the basics, it becomes obsessive like with any craft that you’re passionate about. Working as a chef for someone else, it can kill your creativity and you eventually outgrow your surroundings. I spent two years running a bakery because I love bread – especially sourdough – and we took that bakery to a regional competition and won – that same sourdough culture is what we use in our pizzas today at Neo Med.” Alessandro kindly orders up his awardwinning sourdough garlic bread to the table along with the Taste of Cyprus
sharing board (feta, pitta, olives and tsatziki) and the lamb kibbeh - a classic Levantine dish cooked with minced lamb in a unique pastry parcel. All of which were stunning, particularly the garlic bread which was unbelievably light and airy. We gladly sampled one of Neo-Med’s pizzas too. “The dough is fermented for 48 hours before it gets to you, so it’s not ‘make them in the morning and sell them at night’ and it’s not heavy or difficult to eat. We care a lot about it and we pay a lot of attention to detail – where we procured the ingredients, process and present them.”

It’s good, old honest food.” Hoping to pry more into Alessandro’s passion and inspiration, I ask why, as an Italian, he chose to widen his range with a Mediterranean restaurant. “I love the sea, I’m a scuba diver. When you look at the Med on a map, it’s not just Italy, Spain and Greece. It touches three continents, it’s an amazing sea. Med food can be a bolognese or a lamb maqluba from Libya. All these countries that have negative connotations with war, Syria and Libya, there’s still food and culture and there has been for thousands of years. “It’s like an artist’s palette; I’ve got more paint and more colours. There are that many spices, herbs and cooking styles

that aren’t related to Greece but go to Isreal, Lebanon and it’s full of it.” Our main courses arrived just as Alessandro leaves us. Our photographer’s lamb kleftiko (a lamb shank baked overnight) arrived in a cast-iron cauldron and was by all accounts, succulent and tender. As a veggie, I had to take his word for it. Not one to indulge in a pasta dish usually, Alessandro persuaded me to try the orecchiette Santa Lucia - a broccoli pasta dish tossed with garlic, olive oil and a touch of chilli which was lovingly named after his grandma. It’s no exaggeration to say that this dish was special and unlike anything I’d had before. So much so, that I was straight on the blower to the fiancée to book in our next meal out. Running out of time to exercise? Hi-Tech Fitness may well have the answer to your January workout woes Bronte Saulle caught up with the team to find out more… Nestled in Sheffield’s Shalesmoor, Hi-Tech Fitness was founded by Russian wrestling champion and professional coach, Zagir Kaziev. After launching neighbouring Eagle Fight Club six years ago, Zagir wanted to offer a solution for people in Sheffield who struggle to find the time to work out due to busy lifestyles. The studio, which officially opened for business in November 2019, offers time efficient and high intensity sessions through electrical muscle stimulation (EMS). The first of its kind in Sheffield, EMS exercising once or twice a week for 25 minutes eliminates the need for spending long hours in the gym. Anyone would be forgiven EMS can be used to assist the elderly and those recovering from injury. Zagir added: “EMS devices burn calories in significant amounts as most of the body is involved in physical exercise. The heart and respiratory system are working at once, which leads to a greater number of calories burnt. This is especially beneficial for mothers who are trying to get back into shape after
childbirth, without heavy training. Studies have shown that training and treatments applying EMS technology can help reduce cellulite. Additionally, the classes are recommended for people with mobility impairments.” For those who already hit the gym, EMS for muscle strengthening, conditioning for thinking this is a recent discovery, but as Zagir tells us “in fact Soviet scientists used electrical stimulation in the 1950s to train cosmonauts and restore them after returning to Earth. EMS technology has been used for decades in the field of rehabilitation and in the 1970s, it was mastered by the USA, who turned electrical stimulation into a public fitness method.” Fast forward 50 years and Hi-Tech is offering the latest technology equipment with XBody devices, a friendly approach and expert trainers to support individuals, regardless of age or background, get to their desired fitness levels in a fraction of the time. Zagir explained: “During traditional exercise, the brain and increasing muscle mass can be extremely efficient. It can also be used for preventive and

rehabilitation purposes in neurology, orthopaedics, rheumatology and other medical fields. Asymmetric muscles are a common problem for athletes and in these cases, individuals may feel the stimulation stronger in one part or side of their body. This is not an unusual symptom and personalised EMS exercises can be provided by the HiTech team. Not forgetting the reason fitness enthusiast Zagir Kaziev launched Hi-Tech – to provide a solution for those who are too busy to work out. Due to the effectiveness of XBody EMS training, one 20-minute training equals approximately sends signals to the muscles to bring about contractions. EMS training mimics the action of the central

British luxury supercar maker McLaren is on the hunt for some unexpected recruits for its new £50m innovation and manufacturing facility in Rotherham. Applicants with experience in a wide variety of sectors, from boat-building to the textiles trade and sporting good industries, are being encouraged to apply for the next wave of jobs, apprenticeships and degree apprenticeships that will help double the workforce at McLaren Composites Technology Centre (MCTC) to more than 200 by next year. Those skills are required because materials like carbon fibre start life as a fabric that has to be cut and put into moulds before being treated through a variety of processes before becoming a hard material.
Lighter, composite materials, together with future powertrain technology, will save vehicle weight, boost performance and provide more energy-efficient supercars. McLaren has been a pioneer with ultralightweight, ultra-strong carbon fibre material for decades and builds every car with a carbon fibre chassis, or ‘tub’, at its core. The new roles that are set to be phased in this year will all help to make the next generation of McLaren carbon fibre tubs that will then be sent to the company’s McLaren Production Centre, around 170 miles away in Woking, Surrey. There, the rest of the cars – including powertrain, gearbox, body panels, electrical systems, wheels and Pirelli tyres – will be added by hand before being exported to more than 32 territories around the world. McLaren’s ability to tap into the Sheffield City Region’s extensive materials expertise, skills and universities will help it to innovate quickly and continue to be the lightest in their class. The target is that the MCTC will deliver £100m of gross value-added benefit to the local economy
by 2028 as well as supporting skills development in the region. Well over 90% of just over 4,800 cars made last year by the firm were exported, meaning the new South Yorkshire recruits will get to work on some of the most advanced and admired cars in the world. The announcement of the new roles was made by McLaren CEO Mike Flewitt. “As we’re working with advanced, lightweight materials in new ways that have never been used before on this scale for car production, McLaren is looking for a range of skills you wouldn’t normally associate with the automotive industry. “We’re also looking to hire apprentices and degree apprentices.
