WELCOME
A Word From Us I wrote in last month’s welcome that we encouraged all types of feedback at NorthBound, especially with it being our first issue. We were inundated with phone calls and emails saying it was exactly what the area needed, and I can’t tell you how happy that made us! From a personal point, it was great to speak to so many warm and friendly strangers so with that in mind, I’d like to launch a Letters page where you – the NorthBound readership – talk to us about where you’re from. Not happy about a local boozer in Bradfield closing down? Have a fond memory of a weekend in Oughtibridge from your youth? We want to hear it. What do you think? As usual, send your suggestions in to paul@northboundmagazine.co.uk and we’ll take a look! Moving on to the second issue of NorthBound, it’s our pleasure to have Sheffield legend Joe Scarborough on the cover. We had a right old catch up with Joe and as such, have a smashing feature interview for you over on page 34. If you do one thing next month, do head into the centre and check out his exhibition at Millennium Gallery – it’s going to be fantastic. Elsewhere, we’re taking a look at the past, present and future of the infamous Sheffield Ski Village site at Parkwood Springs in our Outdoor section. Let’s be honest, it’s probably the last month we can roll out our summer fashion and al fresco dining features, isn’t it? Even now, I’m writing this letter as a storm (a literal one, not a metaphor) sweeps over NorthBound HQ. Fingers crossed we get a few more days of moderately high temperatures this month. That’s all from me, do keep in touch will you?

ACUT ABOVE New men’s grooming salon has opened at Fox Valley
A brand new barbers and men’s grooming salon opened up at Fox Valley last month as part of the newly created Sandersons Spa area. O’Neill’s Gentleman’s Barbers’ style is inspired by the smash TV series Peaky Blinders and the male grooming service offers beard trimming, hot shaves and facial massages, whilst also stocking a variety of grooming products. The shop will be open seven days a week and operates both an appointment and walk-in hair cutting service. Jake O’Neill, who has worked for Taylor Taylor and Savills in Sheffield, is now looking forward to launching his own salon. “I want it to really feel like a social club and somewhere that men feel that they can relax in, have a drink and a chat and enjoy the lovely environment we’re creating. Initially I’m going to be
working on my own but will be looking to recruit in the future. “I’m really looking forward to opening in July and welcoming my first customers to O’Neill’s and it’s great to be part of Fox Valley and Sandersons here in my hometown.” The managing director of Dransfield Properties Mark Dransfield, who heads the department store, said: “Sandersons is a family owned and independent business and we are passionate about supporting other businesses like O’Neill’s. The new barber’s shop is going to look fantastic and we’d like to wish him all the very best with his launch.” O’Neill’s is open now at Fox Valley where the Pettits Shoe Shop used to be. www.foxvalleysheffield.co.uk

Lodge Moor prisoner of war camp discovered The UK’s biggest prisoner of war camp unearthed in Sheffield

site, said: “Reading about the living conditions was probably the most striking thing during my research. The prisoner of war camp was a very unpleasant place to stay; the prisoners were fed food out of galvanised dustbins, had to stand outside in the mud, rain and cold for several hours a day during roll call, and since it was so overpopulated as a transit camp, they were squashed into tents or the barracks with little personal space. “Nowadays, the site is popular with dog-walkers and pedestrians just going for a

The forgotten history of what was once the country’s largest prisoner of war camp – a site that held a German admiral who tricked his way out of captivity and went on to succeed Hitler as president of the German Reich – has been uncovered by archaeologists. The remains of the Lodge Moor camp, have been brought to life by researchers from the University of Sheffield and the Sheffield Lakeland Landscape Partnership, who together discovered the site after it was hidden on the outskirts of the city for more than 60 years. At its peak in 1944, the camp held more than 11,000 people including Germans, Italians and soldiers from the Ukraine. The camp’s most famous prisoner was admiral Karl Doenitz who captained several German U-boats. He was captured when his vessel encountered technical difficulties and was forced to surface in October 1918. He spent around six weeks at the Sheffield camp, during which he plotted his escape by feigning mental illness to avoid being tried as a war criminal, eventually being transferred to Manchester’s Wythenshawe Hospital where he remained until the end of the war. He then became president of the German Reich after Hitler committed suicide. Rob Johnson, one of the archaeology students who has been surveying the remains of the
The overgrown and abandoned Victorian graveyard Wardsend Cemetery is situated in the Owlerton district of the city and is known for being the resting place for many victims of the Great Sheffield Flood in 1864. However, two years before the disaster the cemetery was the scene of an extraordinary riot after rumours spread about the sexton, Isaac Howard, digging up and desecrating human remains. An angry mob made largely from relatives of those buried in the cem-
etery turned up at the sexton’s house after some graves were found to be empty and proceeded to set the building on fire. Luckily for Howard, the mob couldn’t locate him and his wife was able to flee the burning house without harm. Following an inquiry, it was found that the disgraced sexton was digging up the bodies to sell to the Sheffield Medical School for dissection and Sheffield Magistrates sentenced the disgraced sexton to three months imprisonment.

Continuing the Moor’s everlasting renovation, new bowling alley and bar Lane7 has confirmed it will be opening its doors in autumn of this year. Lane7 will feature attractions like mini-golf, retro arcade games and pool tables, following suit from their successful venues in Liverpool, Aberdeen and Newcastle (pictured). The new venue is part of the third phase of The Moor’s redevelopment, which includes a new H&M store at the top of the street where Redgates used to be. Kirsty Anderson, Lane7’s head of sales and marketing, told NorthBound: “Lane7 is set to open its
doors in Sheffield this autumn, promising the city a unique bowling experience like you’ve never seen before. “We will be bringing our quirky concept to the city after success across the country with locations in Newcastle, Birmingham, Aberdeen, Middlesbrough and Liverpool, up to three further openings scheduled in 2019 and more planned for 2020. “Located on The Moor, the two-floor venue will provide a family-friendly offer by day before transforming into a bustling nightlife destination which incorporates bowling and an in-house bar with a relaxed food offering and attractions such as mini-golf, retro arcade games, pool and a darts area.”
Head over to lane7.co.uk for a flavour of what to expect.
Scandi Style Two Swedish fashion brands have signed up for the Moor’s Heart of the City II expansion Scandinavian retail brands Monki and Weekday have announced that they will be joining the Heart of The City II scheme, becoming the first retail tenants within the council’s £470m city centre renovation which is set to create 7,000 direct and indirect jobs and spark £3.7bn of economic activity by 2030. The new stores are to be located on the ground floor of Grosvenor House – the new flagship office for HSBC, with customer entrances situated on
Pinstone Street. Both shops are expected to open their doors to the public in November, ahead of the busy Christmas period. Jennie Dahlin Hansson, managing director of Monki, said: “Sheffield is a city full of young, creative people and we can’t wait to open our first store there and share the full Monki experience.” Daniel Herrmann, managing director of Weekday, added: “We have had great success in London and are now thrilled to be
opening our first store in Northern England, enabling more customers to experience our brand. “Sheffield is the home to a vibrant creative scene, and we look forward to meeting this great community.” As well as the completion of Grosvenor House, construction is now getting underway on nearby Blocks B and C of the masterplan. Proposals for the wider scheme include more modern workspaces, premium shops, urban homes, restaurants and cafes, stylish hotels and relaxing public spaces. heartofcity2.com

LOCAL HERO
Georgia Bransby The saddening statistics show that one in two people in our lifetime will be diagnosed with cancer. Through her work at Weston Park Cancer Charity over the past year, fundraising assistant Georgia Bransby has seen firsthand the impact that the charity has on people and their battle with the disease. So in support of the charity and in a bid to raise funds, she courageously completed the biggest skydive in the UK – a whopping 15,000ft jump – back in June. NorthBound caught up with the Hillsborough resident to find out more about her connection to the charity and how the money she is raising will help Western Park. What is your link to Western Park? I've been working for the charity for a year this July and my link to it is a strong, personal one. I work there as a fundraising assistant, so I’m the first port of call for people coming in to the hospital. I mean, there are lots of other things that I do there but I guess you could say I’m on the ‘front line’. This means I see, day in day out, the effects of cancer and the effect the hospital has on people. Whether that’s in a positive way, however because of the nature of the disease, it’s not always the case. You have just completed a sky-dive to raise money for the charity. How was this experience? Yes, I jumped out of the plane on last June - it was incredible! If you can manage to gather the courage, I really can’t recommend it enough. At the charity we always talk to
people about it when they come in to sign up for a once in a lifetime thing, and it genuinely is a once in a lifetime event. As soon as we landed, I wanted to go and do it again. So I think that says a lot! At one point I was asking the guy I was jumping with how high we were, and he said “oh, only about 10,000 feet” – it was the most terrifying thing! Also, I was first out of the plane, but I think it was a good thing because I didn’t have to watch everyone else go before me. I actually convinced my brother to do it with me as well, which was really nice. On the day we both jumped from the same plane, it was pretty cool. Although, my mum was pretty petrified because she only has us two so she was like “both of my babies are jumping out of a plane!” But the whole experience was amazing. How will the money raised from the skydive help Weston Park? It will go towards helping the charity generally. The cost of all the charity’s work is around £2m a year, which then goes to three main areas: research, treatment and care. These are the three main branches, but the money essentially covers everything. The charity delivers small and large grants to people that apply for it. So, from the small things like providing squash for the people having their radiotherapy treatment, to providing the £300,000 a year to run the emergency support centre. It’s quite a broad
spectrum of things that need to be funded, so I just want it to go where it’s needed the most. What inspired you to work with the charity? It’s two-fold really. Firstly, aside from the charity side of things, being in Sheffield is a big part of it. I just love the city. Secondly, one of my family friends – she was basically a part of my family – battled with cancer for about 20 years. Unfortunately she passed away a couple of years ago. Having that kind of personal connection to the disease led to my interest in the charity initially. Also, just knowing how much more we need to do and how much help people need was a big motivation for me to join the charity. This connection and awareness, for me, has only intensified, hence why I jumped out of a plane for it! Are people still able to donate? My Justgiving page is still open, and will stay open indefinitely. People are more than welcome to donate if they wish to. I also have offline donations which are still ongoing. My target amount that I have put on my page is £500, at present I have £370. Altogether I am hoping to raise about £1000, so hopefully I will reach this target! Donate to Georgia's fund here: tinyurl. com/y4xn63wl. You can also donate to Weston Park Cancer Charity at: westonpark.org.uk

OUGHTIBRIDGE KITCHENS You may have seen that our property is up for sale, but WE ARE NOT CLOSING!
8 years ago, after 30 years in the old Co-Op building, we moved next door into our substantial but smaller showroom with the very coveted Neff 5 Star MasterPartner status. With the continuing improvement of technology (photography, web sites, CAD design systems etc.) combined with the huge number of projects we have completed in the area (which are available for inspection) we believe that the need for a very expensive and large showroom is no longer necessary. So, in the next few months we will be moving into a more compact up-to-date showroom in order to remain competitive yet continue to offer our renowned level of quality, service and choice. Almost 40 years of experience, in not just kitchens but the full service including building works and if required planning and building regulations AND we are only moving across the road to the premises we already own and currently use as our store. AREA GUIDE: OUGHTIBRIDGE
Oughtibridge Just a few miles from the centre of Sheffield lies a quaint, charming village by the nameof Oughtibridge A small but prosperous village, one where most people know each other but are still welcoming and warm to any visitors, is a rare thing these days. Despite new developments springing up around the village and a steadily increasing population, 80% of residents here own their homes which perhaps indicates a strong and constant sense of community. That sense of civic togetherness was the subject of city-wide praise last year when the village rallied together after a fire destroyed the family-run Nicholson’s newsagents on Langsett Road. The store had served the village for more than three decades and had left everyone devastated. Local resident Catherine Fletcher, with her daughter Holly, set up a fundraising appeal to help the families involved. £2,000 was raised in a matter of days, with donations sent through by over 100 people. If you find yourself walking down Station Road towards Coronation Park, as locals let on to you as if you’ve lived there your whole life, or if you’re checking out the famous Stannington Brass Band, or if you just fancy sampling some of the local businesses, turn over the page and have a flick through our guide to Oughtibridge. Once you visit, you’ll never leave…

LIFE IN THE BIG VILLAGE Words: Ruth Alexander
Ahead of his first ever retrospective exhibition, one of Sheffield’s mostloved artists Joe Scarborough sits down with NorthBound Magazine for a natter about his art, growing up in Pitsmoor and living life in the big village‌
34 | www.NorthBoundmagazine.co.uk
Joe Scarborough
When I first came to Sheffield six years ago I was struck by the small close knit communities that somehow exist within such a big and widespread city, making the daunting experience of moving from a tiny countryside town to a huge, bustling northern powerhouse all the more easier. Sheffield truly is a unique and wonderful place to live and nobody agrees with or encapsulates this more than the Sheffield legend Joe Scarborough. At 81 years of age, Joe has had, and continues to have, a colourful career, creating amazing pieces of art that reflect everyday life in the most fun and vibrant way. With his new exhibition ‘Life in the Big Village’ set to open in August at Weston Park Museum, I sat down for a chat with the man himself whilst he enjoyed the sun on his narrowboat in Pitsmoor. What resulted was a wonderful and insightful discussion on his life and artwork, the local community and nostalgic notions of how life should be lived. I start with asking Joe the fundamental question of how he first got into art and painting and what I got was a very humble response. “Well basically I’ve always been interested in art but I found out slowly but surely that I wasn’t particularly good at anything else, so art, if you like, was the last resort!” It turns out that Joe in fact started doodling trains, boats and planes from an early age, using the backside of his dad’s great big pink report books from the steel works as a canvas. It wasn’t until he started working down the pits at Thorpe Hesley that he realised he wanted to move on from trains, boats and planes. “Suddenly I decided that figures in mining gear and stuff like that were far more interesting than trains and boats and planes, so I started to do very, very simple figures and because I couldn’t draw faces, the idea of a figure about four inches tall was very attractive and practical.” It seems that his distinctive style of large, faceless figures and small buildings, all painted in dynamic and vivid colours, results from a very practical and logistical resolution to a conundrum that Joe had to come up against in his early days as a painter. “The canvases I bought were 20x24 because it fits any council house chimney breast and I thought I got a great sale. But the thing is if my figures were only four inches tall, I was trying to put them into a building that was about six inches tall. And people just accepted it.” He claims that people accepted the style seeing as the aesthetic of big figures and small buildings had been a feature of old medieval paintings. “The style wasn’t seen to be silly. You can get away with a small building and larger figures. That means that you can get far more into your canvas than normal and from then on I was on my way.” As the conversation moves on, Joe emphasises his role as a storyteller, creating a cast of characters to thoroughly fill the canvas, creating scenes of everyday life. “It’s like cramming a novel into a short story,” he says about the epitome of his artistic vision. “My job is more than just an artist, I’m presenting your life back to you, like the old music hall artists who sang about what they knew; I’m just painting about what I know.”

Joe Scarborough
It’s very apparent that Joe is a poetic person, someone who thinks a lot about what he wants to create in his paintings and a very conscientious artist who speaks to his audience through a well-woven narrative. I ask him about possible inspirations for his canvas characters that crop up in these narratives and if he ever finds himself drawing the same figures. “In your own life you will see somebody two times a week maybe and then not see them for maybe a couple of years and all of a sudden you’ll see them again - I tend to do that with works. Certain people will be in some works and then it’ll be a year until they go in something else. And it’s to keep that synergy between myself and the audience, because it’s always the audience. You must think of yourself as actor, narrator, and storyteller. You’re not talking to yourself, you’re talking to an audience.” Joe’s paintings certainly seem like stories on a canvas, a picture of real life through a vibrant eye, a reflection of the communities that we live in. The conversation turns to Pitsmoor, the place he grew up in and still resides, and what the community was like
back then and how it now is. “Well it was a definitely a closeknit community in Pitsmoor. The houses on Fitzalan Street, they’ve gone now. It’s under grass as it turns out, everything was close together […] I think
it’s changed now because, and I know this is strange, when we lived down in Pitsmoor people had a life in the streets. Now, people don’t have a life in the streets, they have life in the front room in front of the TV, which is
very exciting. You can reach the rest of the world by TV, so you don’t have to go out and you don’t have to meet people!” I tell him that that is unfortunately the case in most communities these days and not just in Pitsmoor. Even for me, someone who grew up around technology has seen the difference in how people now interact within their communities compared to when I was a kid. “I think, to be honest to use two phrases, we used to live almost ‘cheek by jowl’, and you knew everybody. But nowadays a new phrase has crept into the lexicography of society: ‘You’re in my space.’ And that separates you. People say ‘you’re in my space’ and of course you don’t have a space, it’s like saying ‘don’t touch me, don’t come near me’ and all that. Well, in that case you just don’t get any social intercourse between you, so people become strangers to each other even though they only live 20 yards away from each other. Everybody in my paintings are bumping into each other.”
www.NorthBoundmagazine.co.uk | 37
Joe Scarborough
With that, Joe shows how his art not only imitates life but also is the imitation of the life he wants everyone to live in. He wants to recreate in his paintings the small community feel that he experienced growing up in Pitsmoor and show us scenes from our lives no matter how different our experiences are. I bring up his new and upcoming exhibition at Weston Park Museum called ‘Life in the Big Village’ and wholeheartedly agree with him that Sheffield is indeed like one big village. The exhibition is “a retrospective” of his career with works from back in the 60s up to the present day. I ask him what the main focus is. “It’s big, it’s brash, it’s in your face, it’s about things that, you know, you would quietly smile about, things that will annoy you but then that’s what life is like. It’s like I’m giving it you back, but everything in that show you will already know about. It’s not stratospheric, it’s at your level, it’s your next door—it’s a celebration of your next door.” The paintings range from Sheffield scenes to beautiful settings in Crete, all of them capturing
“Myjobis morethan justan artist,I’m presenting yourlife backto you, liketheold musichall artists who sangabout whatthey knew;I’m justpainting aboutwhatI know.”
38 | www.NorthBoundmagazine.co.uk
Joe’s life and memories. There will be images old and new, including a brand new work that Joe has created for the exhibition which features an old stylish Bristol 405 car, using Pitsmoor as the backdrop. Joe says to keep our eyes peeled for it. By the end of the phone call, I was thoroughly uplifted by our conversation as we had talked in depth about issues that I have always been concerned and passionate about. As we start saying goodbye to one another, I ask him if there is anything else that he wants to say to the people that will read this interview, any
final thoughts that I can put out there for him. “I think at the end of the day whatever way you’ve lived—I live it in painting and in images—the phrase that should come to mind at the end of every day is ‘well fancy that’. Every day is a surprise, fancy that, fancy that happening, fancy thinking of that. Every day is a surprise.” ‘Life In The Big Village’ opens at Weston Park Museum on Saturday 17 August and runs until Sunday 24 November. Joe will be doing a talk on Tuesday 27 August at 1:00pm about the works. More info at museums-sheffield.org.uk

That were alreyt, wannit? Last month, and for the second year running, Hillsborough Park hosted the behemoth that is Tramlines Festival and for the most part, the weekend went off without a hitch. In fact, it was arguably the best instalment of the festival since it started in 2009. More than 30,000 festivalgoers made the pilgrimage down Middlewood Road and Penistone Road and through the gates of Hillsborough Park for a weekend of live music, tributes and the festival’s biggest comedy offering yet. Despite a torrential downpour on Friday afternoon, the spirits weren’t dampened and the likes of the Seamonsters and the Futureheads played to a packed out T’Other Stage, whilst the Manic Street Preachers (with a surprise cover of Sweet Child Of Mine in tow) and Two Door Cinema Club drew huge crowds at Nulty’s Main Stage. The sun came out for Saturday, just as the crowd’s vocal chords were warmed up during Reverend and the Makers afternoon set. Johnny Marr rolled back the clock with a set consisting of solo material and Smiths’ classics ahead of the Courteeners headline slot which, predictably, the crowd went nuts for. Last month’s cover star Joe Carnall brought his new project Good Cop Bad Cop to the festival on Sunday night whilst Phil Jupitus, Doves, Peter Hook and Lewis Capaldi all made appearances at Hillsborough Park. The highlight of the weekend was saved until the last headliner on Sunday. Nile Rodgers’ songwriting prowess and Chic’s live expertise made for a wonderfully feel-good set – the perfect way to round off an incredible weekend. Tickets for 2020’s festival have already gone on sale, with half of them snapped up in record time. See you again next year then, yeah?

YOUR NEXT LOCAL The Walkley Cottage’s relaxed atmosphere and range of ales makes it a popular choice for a local boozer Situated on Bole Hill Road in Walkley, the Walkley Cottage is loved by locals and visitors to the area alike. The pub offers up a relaxed atmosphere, wonderful home-cooked food and a great range of lagers and ales, ensuring drinkers of all persuasions are catered for. Since taking over the pub in November of last year, owners Richard and David have made some notable changes – both inside and out – but it hasn’t lost its charm. New decorations and flooring throughout give it that modern look, whilst the beer garden’s refurbishment has seen an outdoor bar fitted alongside a pizza oven and a BBQ. The new landlord Richard said: “Not many people know the pub has a beer garden! When we took over the pub in November we had lots of ideas and were eager to get to spring-time to
start making changes to outdoors.” “Now we’ve had all new fencing and the next phase of the beer garden is to create a designated children’s play area; we want our pub to be family-friendly. We also want to welcome dog walkers and muddy boots!” The Walkley Cottage serves home-cooked food Monday through to Saturday 127pm and pub roasts on Sunday 12-3pm. With plenty to choose from, the Cottage also offers a lunchtime menu served 12-3pm (Mon-Sat) from which you can get two courses for just £7.95. For the traditionalists, there is a classic menu which consists of all the usual favourites: pie of the day, pan-fried liver and homemade lasagne, to name but a few. “We like to pride ourselves on homecooked food,” says Richard. “Every Friday is fish and chip day – some of our customers travel miles across the city.” Drinks-wise, The Walkley Cottage currently serves Carling, John Smith, Stones, Moretti, Amstel, Guinness, Strongbow, Strongbow Dark Fruits and Stella Artois. The pub also has a permanent local ale in Abbeydale Brewery’s Moonshine and change the other guests ales on a weekly basis. In addition to cask and draughts, it also serves gins, rums, whiskeys and Old Mout Cider. Owner David explains: “When we took over, there were just a few gins to choose from, now we have more than 30! In the next couple of weeks we are going to concentrate on events throughout the summer.”
“We have an open mic night once a month, a disco night on the last Saturday of each month and we want to do more! We would like to thank everyone that has helped and supported us since taking on the pub. Our staff have been amazing! They have worked so hard to help us achieve where we are today and we feel so proud to have a great team! Also thank you to our families, friends and customers who have all supported and helped us. We are so excited to plough on and create a thriving pub that both the local community and new customers from afar can come and enjoy.” thewalkleycottage.co.uk 0114 2344968 // 46 Bole Hill Rd, Sheffield, S6 5DD

SLOPES AT THE SPRINGS The abandoned Ski Village to the North of the city centre is set for a multi-million pound redevelopment Last month, Sheffield city council agreed a 150 year lease with Extreme Destinations for an ‘internationally recognised’ sport and leisure destination at the old ski village site at Parkwood Springs. The ambitious plans will see the destination ‘rival the best in the world’, bring 400 new jobs and one million new visitors to Sheffield. The 21-hectare site, with Extreme at the helm, will be developed into a modern ski slope, numerous mountain biking
trails, a hub building with shops, bars and restaurants as well as visitor accommodation, alongside a major international operator. This will allow the developer to move ahead with its investment proposals. It is expected that initial phases of the site could boost the Sheffield economy with investment of up to £40m, and once the entire scheme is complete that could eventually top £60million. It’s certainly huge news for North Sheffield and the city as a whole, but the excitement of the project is something that extends to the bosses at Extreme too – which promises to bring an internationally recognised and world class destination to the city. Alistair Gosling, CEO of Extreme said: “This is a fantastic and unique opportunity to deliver an Extreme Destination right in the heart of Sheffield. We will be tapping into the world-wide phenomena of creating action and adventure destinations, where all the excitement of sport and leisure facilities come together – sports activities, accommodation, eating, drinking, shopping – in a totally immersive experience.”
60 | www.NorthBoundmagazine.co.uk
Councillor Mazher Iqbal, cabinet member for business and investment at Sheffield city council, said: “Bringing this area back into use as part of a truly global package of sports facilities, accommodation and other leisure pursuits is a fantastic outcome for the team at Sheffield council that has worked to secure a preferred developer with Extreme’s experience in delivering leisure based schemed for many years.” The infamous ski village site opened in 1988 but closed in 2012 following a series of fires. extremesportscompany.com

pulp’s JarvisCocker has launchedanarttrail to markKinderScout’s ‘Mass Trespass’ On the morning of April 24, 1932, roughly 500 men and women met in the small village of Hayfield before heading towards Kinder Scout, the highest point in the Peak District. Once at the top of the mountain, they enjoyed a celebratory meet up with a separate contingent of walkers from Sheffield before the groups headed back down together. It might be hard to believe today, but this seemingly innocuous act of comradeship was in fact a defiant breach of law due to large swathes of the moorlands being owned by the upper gentry. Backed by a series of Enclosure Acts that allowed common land to be easily secured by the wealthy, vast open spaces would be used for occasional grouse hunts and gamekeepers employed to keep the lower classes consigned to a small selection of easily congested footpaths. The event was a pre-planned, politically motivated protest against class discrimination and later became known as the ‘Mass Tresspass’. During the march, demonstrators sang the ‘Red Flag’ and engaged in hand-to-hand scuffles with wardens and police attempting to keep the group away from restricted areas. Upon their return to Hayfield, five men were arrested (six detained overall), charged with riotous assembly and some later received jail sentences ranging from two to six months. Such heavy-handed
treatment caused outrage amongst a wider section of society, exposing the greed of wealthy landowners and highlighting the injustice of land ownership laws at the time. Fast forward 86 years, one of Sheffield’s most famous sons has marked the event with a new art trail. Jarvis Cocker’s Be Kinder walk features artworks along the route that the protesters took, beginning with a jukebox full of protest songs. Jarv, who worked with Turner Prize winner Jeremy Deller on the project, told BBC Sheffield: “I remember coming out here on school trips being forced to walk in the countryside and complaining bitterly at the time. In later life I’ve been glad of that. “People might not know the story of the mass trespassers. That’s really what led to people being allowed to walk in this area [Kinder Scout], before that the land was very restricted access.” Today’s ramblers can follow pink markers on the trail, which features images of the protesters along the route as well as an art installation in Edale Chapel. The trail is the National Trust’s People’s Landscape programme which runs until September. nationaltrust.org.uk
