So July is the big reopening month, is it?
Plenty of businesses have been struggling through the lockdown period with takeout options and reduced hours. To some, the news that the hospitality sector could reopen was great - we can get out the house, go for a pint, go for a meal, grab a coffee. It isn’t as straight forward for those small businesses and staff, however. Reduced capacity and hygeine measures make the next few months very, very tricky for them. So let’s not have a pop if our favourite boozer puts the price up by a quid. With this being our 13th issue, that means we’re celebrating one year in print - what a ride! We’ve got a bumper six page feature in this mag to celebrate, putting together some of our favourite quotes from our esteemed interviewees over the past 12 months. If I was you, I’d keep hold of it. It may serve as a tool of inspiration in the future as some of quotes are fantastic and uplifting to say the least. Elsewhere, with Tramlines Festival unable to host a huge party in Hillsborough Park this year, we’re taking a look at some of the festival’s charity work and how they’re plugging those vital charitable revenue streams this summer. Walkley artist in the spotlight Alan Pennington's visions of the Peak District become a lockdown inspiration The creativity of a Sheffield artist has been put to good use as lockdown forced all of us to stay away from some of our favourite places. Now the restrictions are easing, Alan Pennington is hoping his newly completed Peak District collection will act as a reminder of what we temporarily lost, and help those of us still under restrictions to access the beautiful countryside once again. The Walkley-based artist, who painted one of Sheffield’s most iconic #StayHomeSaveLives images, admits he took for granted that he could escape to the Peaks at any time. He said: “They say you don’t miss something until it’s gone – and it was certainly true for me. I didn’t realise how much I relied on walking in the Peak District to feed my creativity, and felt lost when lockdown threatened to take that
away from me. “I decided to turn this into a positive and complete the collection I’d started over a year ago. I took my memories of the places and scenes I wanted to experience again and turned them into pieces anyone who has visited the Peaks would recognise. It helped me get through lockdown knowing I would appreciate it all the more once I could step foot in them again. I hope the paintings have a similar affect on people that continue to be in lockdown.“ Alan Pennington is renowned for his bold, brightly coloured depictions of key local landmarks and places. His Hendo’s “Be a Local Hero” character became an icon to the city during lockdown, raising money for NHS Charities Together.

moving up a gear The Fox Valley store Trek is seeing an upturn in business While some stores have seen a dramatic down-turn in trade during the UK lockdown the team at Trek at Fox Valley have never been busier. It has been reported that 1.3 million people have bought a new bike during the lockdown and cycle retailers are definitely one sector which has seen an upturn in trade. The popular cycle shop initially closed when the lockdown was announced by the Government in March but reopened in April. Since then store Manager Andy Cook and his team have had their busiest period since the store opened in November 2017. Katy Simcock, from Trek Bikes, said: “This is something we have seen right across our stores and definitely here at Fox Valley. Customers have been really keen to not only buy new bikes, but
to have their old bikes fixed and reconditioned – so our workshop team have been incredibly busy as well. “Right across the store, from equipment and accessories including pedals and helmets we’ve been selling out and are really ready to get our new 2021 range in now at the store.” Despite tight limits on the number of people allowed in store, sales are 150% up on last year and demand continues to grow. A Grave Affair
The overgrown and abandoned Victorian graveyard Wardsend Cemetery is situated in the Owlerton district of the city and known for being the resting place for many victims of the Great Sheffield Flood in 1864. However, two years before the disaster the cemetery was the scene of an extraordinary riot after rumours spread about the sexton, Isaac Howard, digging up and desecrating human remains. An angry mob made largely from relatives of those buried in the cemetery turned up at the sexton’s house after some graves were found to be empty and proceeded to set the building on fire. Luckily for Howard, the mob couldn’t locate him and his wife was able to flee the burning house without harm. Following an inquiry, it was found that the disgraced sexton was digging up the bodies to sell to the Sheffield Medical School for dissection and Sheffield Magistrates sentenced the disgraced sexton to three months imprisonment.

Built on former coalfield land alongside Rother Valley Country Park, Gulliver's Valley is finally set to open An opening date has been announced for the new multimillion-pound Gulliver's Valley theme park on the outskirts of Sheffield. The park, which becomes the fourth site in the Gulliver's Theme Park Resorts family, postponed its planned opening earlier this year due to the coronavirus pandemic. It will now open its doors to the public for the first time, on Saturday 11 July 2020. A number of additional safety measures have since been made to the park in response to the pandemic, including temperature checks on arrival, mandatory advanced booking, contactless entry, social
distancing measures and a food pre-ordering system. The park will also be operating at a limited capacity, with pre-booked slots only, to adhere to the government's social distancing guidelines. Julie Dalton, managing director of the family-run Gulliver's Theme Park Resorts, said: "We are so excited to be finally opening Gulliver's Valley to the public. "The last few months have been tough to say the least when we started work on the park, we didn't ever expect to be faced with a global pandemic, but I am proud to say our team has risen to the challenge and worked hard
to enable us to open, just one month later than we initially planned. "Of course, the health and wellbeing of our visitors and our employees really is top priority and so we have made a number of changes to the park to reflect this, so that everyone feels comfortable and reassured whilst enjoying a fun and enjoyable day out."

Meet Tobias. He's nine years old and is an intelligent, quirky, happy little boy with an amazing sense of humour and level of determination. He has Cerebral Palsy and Autism so he faces many challenges on a daily basis. He cannot stand or walk unaided and requires support with most tasks that we would usually take for granted. Tobias was planning on completing a 1km sponsored walk in May in a local park, but unfortunately this wasn’t possible. Inspired by Captain Tom, he was determined to do something. "Why don’t I use my walker to try to complete a marathon by walking up and down my street every day?" At the start of lockdown, with the aid of his walker and with lots

Tobias attends Paces School in High Green, an amazing place and as a conductive education school where the focus is on independence, developing movement, function and personality. It is a non-maintained special school where the ethos is centred on children being challenged on a daily basis to strive to reach their full potential. Without this school, Tobias would not have made nearly as much progress as he has done and continues to do so. The building that Tobias and his friends are currently in isn’t fit for purpose, so Tobias wants to raise money towards their new fundraising campaign ‘A New Home for Paces’ to provide a new school with the facilities that Tobias and his friends deserve. Initially setting a target of £500 to raise for his chosen charities, Sheffield Children's Hospital and Paces School - his school in High Green. Safe to say it blew it up and, at the time of writing, has raised £132,030 from over 5,000 doners. And he's not done yet! He’s now taking on a new challenge, running a marathon, using a race runner. Tobias visits Sheffield Children’s Hospital on a regular basis and has had several operations there. He genuinely enjoys going ‘for a sleepover’ because the incredible staff ensure the whole

Hillsborough Park is set for a new community café and activity centre after The National Lottery Heritage Fund announced their support for the project

The National Lottery Heritage Fund have awarded local charity Age UK Sheffield £581,500 to restore the derelict Grade IIlisted old Coach House building, next to Hillsborough Library. The nearby Potting Shed will be renovated as a creative Makers’ Shed, whilst Age UK Sheffield will also manage community facilities at the park’s Bowling Pavilion. Age UK Sheffield chief executive, Steve Chu, said: “This is absolutely amazing news. I am so grateful to The National Lottery Heritage Fund and everyone who buys Lottery tickets. This project could not have developed without National Lottery funding. We are going to create a beautiful new café for Hillsborough Park and develop an exciting range of activities which will be targeted at older people, accessible to people with long-term health conditions such as dementia, and available to the entire community.” David Renwick, director, England, North at The National Lottery Heritage Fund, said: “We are really pleased to be able to support Age UK Sheffield’s vision for the Old Coach House and the Potting Shed become reality. Our funding will not only go towards saving these historic buildings from dilapidation, but will ensure that they will become valuable community assets providing a space for services for older people and dementia-friendly activities. “Here at The National Lottery Heritage Fund, we are committed to making investments that will ensure the UK’s heritage sector is strong and resilient, and we commend the steps that Age UK Sheffield have taken so that their community café and activity centre in Hillsborough Park will be a sustainable business for many years to come.”
a unique cafe venue for Sheffield. “From the beginning, the vision was to transform the historic disused Coach House into a vital community hub, where local people and visitors can meet for drinks and refreshments while enjoying the park’s great recreational and heritage facilities. This will also enable people with dementia, their families, friends and carers, to be more active, more creative and more integrated. This funding means that vision is now becoming a reality.” The project will revitalise Hillsborough Park, and enhance other improvements planned by the council, which include a new wheels park and exciting developments for the playground. The aim is for Hillsborough Park to be a site that helps and encourages people of all ages and abilities to have fun and get active together. Age UK Sheffield are hoping to begin construction work in the autumn, with the aim of opening the café during summer 2021. In total, the project will cost around £1 million, with Age UK Sheffield contributing £100,000 and over £200,000 in partner funding already secured. Additional local fundraising will also be needed. Keeping it in the family We chat to husband and wife team at McGilveray’s in Fox Valley as they reopen to the public... Hi Wendy, how are you and Alan getting on at McGilveray’s? “These are very strange times and the support of Northbound is greatly appreciated. McGilveray’s would have had its 1 year anniversary on the Sunday 22nd March but unfortunately we were shut down the Friday before. As a local family-run business things have been extremely stressful for us like most, especially financially being charged full rent and service charge. This has been a hard pill to swallow when you pay your rent to a company that has a multimillionaire at the helm. Especially when he has furloughed all his staff including security and is providing no services.” What plans do you have in place for this month? “We have been operating a take away service over the last few weeks Thursday Friday and Saturday 4-8pm but it is dwindling due to market saturation. We are excited to be opening on the 4th July with a different looking restaurant that has individual pods for customers to create a safe environment. Whilst we’re all excited to getting back into our favourite boozers and restaurants, it’s incredibly vital to continue to stick to the rules of social distancing. Just because the government are no longer enforcing it, doesn’t mean we should disregard it. The most important thing though, is to be kind to our local businesses and the staff - they’ve struggled hugely throughout this topsyturvy year and the least we could do is spend some of our hard earned cash, thank them and respect the rules in place.

We have had great support from our Pubco Admiral Taverns and our locals. We closed on the 1st of March for a major refurb, so we will have been closed for four months. The frustration was we couldn’t open at all, not even for takeaways due to the work not being finished. The contractors are back and pushing hard for us to reopen. As long as everyone continues with good social distancing practice, we hope to remain open and open our kitchen in a couple of weeks. The Perfect Match Providing some uplifting splashes of colour during what has often felt like a grey few months in lockdown, Crookes-based Mary Tear’s on an aesthetically pleasing mission to match up various pieces of Steel City with her selection of Pantone cards. We spoke to the Colours of Sheffield founder to hear about how it all began… Hi Mary, could you introduce yourself the NorthBound readership? I am a Sheffield University graduate who has lived here since 2012. I am originally from Beverley, East Yorkshire, but I have fallen in love with Sheffield. I live in Crookes and currently work as an antitrafficking caseworker for a charity in Sheffield full-time – and manage the Colours of Sheffield project on the side.

Welcome In a normal year we would have held our Grand Assembly and started our new council year back in May, however this is no ordinary year. We enjoyed a packed and successful year May 2019 to March 2020. Many projects and initiatives the council backed thrived throughout. We spruced up the offices, revamped our Web, changed our Newsletter and supported a huge amount of festivities from the Galas and Carnivals of the summer, the Christmas festivities and so we arrived onto the beginning of 2020 where we had planned many festivities to commemorate and celebrate many anniversaries but it wasn’t to be. At the end of 2019 we all were aware of the Covid-19 Virus affecting Asia but as the new year began the whole world started to feel the threats of this contagious virus spreading. The council was still meeting and making plans when on 23rd. March we had lockdown, no one allowed outdoors other than key workers, everything stopped, everywhere closed.
Very trying, challenging times but the Council is in a strong position to restart with many plans and initiatives ready to progress throughout the coming year when we all gradually, cautiously come out of lockdown and tentatively begin projects once more. Bradfield Parish Council has monthly meetings for the full council, but it also works through its two committees: The Finance & Personnel Committee and the Assets, Community and Environment Committee, a brief resume of both committees activities over the past year can be found over the next two pages.
Bradfield Parish Council closed its offices. Teresa our RFO/Clerk and her assistant Pam both began to work from home, the maintenance staff worked alone in key areas like Birtin Cemetery, Coronation Park, Dungworth Park and the picnic area by Smithy Bridge. We devolved authority to ensure the Parish Council still continued to function and as soon as the appropriate legislation was passed by Parliament held remote Zoom meetings for the council. I would like to say at this point a very big thank you to all our staff and my fellow councillors who have risen to this most challenging of times and maintained essential work to ensure Bradfield Parish Council continued to function throughout this lockdown period.

FINANCIAL REPORT 2019/2020 The Parish Council approved expenditure for the financial year 2019/20 of £292,525. The Council’s expenditure relates to services carried out in the area, enhancing the work of Sheffield City Council and local community groups, maintenance of its assets, which include Council offices, Coronation Park, Birtin Cemetery, Low Bradfield public toilets, several stone built bus shelters, vehicles and equipment, numerous wayside seats and noticeboards, and provision of illuminated Christmas trees throughout the Parish. An amount is also set aside each year for grants to local organisations. The full list of successful grant applications for 2019/2020 can be found on the website. The precept collected from the local taxpayers amounted to £246,372. The balance was met from reserves, income from Birtin Cemetery, rental income, Community Infrastructure Levy and other miscellaneous income. The Council’s accounts are subject to external audit. The external audit will be undertaken in July 2020 and the accounts will be made available to the public during July 2020. The final audit report will be displayed after completion of the external audit. For the current year 2020/21 budgeted expenditure amounts to £288,045 with a precept of £253,640.

Improvement works have been ongoing to the pathways in Coronation Park. The Council continues to work with Sustrans and funded a scoping exercise 'Sheffield North Links to NCN 627' alongside Stocksbridge Town Council which maps and assesses options for improving active travel from Stocksbridge, Deepcar and Oughtibridge to the National Cycle Network/Trans Pennine Trial in the Upper Don Valley and to the areas reservoirs. Each fortnight we hold a planning meeting to make observations about current plans for consideration under the Town & Country Planning act tabled from SCC & PDNPA. We have members of the committee from each of the Parish Wards. With the local knowledge these members bring to the committee, we see the plans from the local perspective, and discuss any problems relating to these local

“I’m completely self-taught so I was a bit insecure when I initially got booked to do sessions because I’d think ‘oh I hope I can get away with it’. It just so happens that over the years I’ve got to play with a lot of different people, The Smiths in particular; that was kind of weird because they’d just recorded their first album. I’d never heard of them and I didn’t know what they were about, so it’s always funny how people bring that one up. My son went to the local music college, he came home one day and he said: ‘Did you play with The Smiths?!’ I said yeah and suddenly I went up about 10 places in his estimations! Instead of being grumpy old Dad I was cool for a minute. I came from nothing, I had no right to have made it where I am, but I have and I will keep going.”

For our launch issue, we spoke to former Milburn frontman Joe Carnall Jr ahead of his Tramlines set. Amongst other things, Joe spoke candidly about living in LA for a bit, Human League and recording with fellow High Greener Matt Helders, drummer of the Arctic Monkeys.
“I wanted to get away from making guitar music and thought what I was doing sounded cool. On the Human League thing, obviously I know a few of their records, as well as Heaven 17 and ABC, but I wouldn’t have said I constantly listened to them. It’s just a happy accident that I’m from Sheffield, but I suppose it felt good to be kind of bringing back a bit. A lot of the songs that ended up on this record I wrote with Matt in mind. I knew he was up for doing it and I knew we’d be recording out in LA, I sent over one tune and he was asked me straightaway to come over a record them at his place, so I suppose that entered my mind when writing the other tracks – which probably adds to the kind of retro soundtrack-like feel to it. “I always used to love doing Sheffield when I was a kid; there were gigs at the Lescar that I used to do quite a lot with Toby Foster. He would say: ‘I’ve got fuck all!”, then go on and do 40 minutes of brilliant improv and I used to love that, it was one of the first gigs that I used to do. It’s really easy to make people clap but it’s really hard to make people laugh.’ Laughter is vital, and when you’re truly laughing, you’re kind of lost in laughter, and it’s just the best feeling! Long may it continue!”

Somebody had a little moan and we didn’t need to respond to them. All of our customers replied on our behalf and defended us because they know what we’re about. Yes, it’s £12.95 for fish and chips but you know what, it’s absolutely the best fish and chips around! We love it here in Fox Valley – the weather has its own little climate down here. You can have rain, sun and snow, and that’s all in one day!”

The famous dole queue scene in The Full Monty was shot in our very own Burton Hall. Hundreds use the site on a daily basis, and a huge range of activities take place. It’s a pretty big organisation now, but Burton Street is still run on a not-for-profit basis, and it never lost its soul. That’s what makes it the special and unique place it is.”

The Hillsborough Park festival has launched a new initiative to plug the gap whilst the three-day event is forcedtodelayuntilnextyear Tramlines Festival has announced over £13k raised for charity in 2019 and launch ‘Chari-Tees’. Cash was raised in 2019 from guestlist donations, merch sales and revenue from the backstage ‘Nulty’s bar’ Tramlines Festival 2019 took place from 19 – 21 July last year with the largest crowd ever filling Hillsborough Park to enjoy acts like Two Door Cinema Club, Courteeners, Nile Rodgers with Chic and many more. Amongst the revelry, the festival raised a total of £13.9k which was split between Weston Park Cancer Charity, Cavendish Cancer Care, Sheffield Young Carers, Snowdrop Project and Poppy Appeal. Although Tramlines 2020 has been officially postponed, the festival is still looking at ways to support local causes and has just announced their new ‘Chari-tees’ initiative. A limited edition designed set of T-Shirts are up for pre-order via the Tramlines website with all profits going to charity. The cash raised in 2019 brings the total for the last two years to a staggering £40k. 2018 saw huge donations for local cancer charities following the tragic death of festival director Sarah Nulty just weeks before the event. A large chunk of money raised in the last two years comes from ‘Nulty’s Bar’, a backstage area built, staffed and stocked voluntarily by Sarah’s friends and family. The ‘Charit-Tees’ project features two brand new and exclusive designs, The ‘Be Reyt’ T-Shirt designed at Tramlines HQ, and the ‘Beautiful Sheffield’ T-Shirt from Sheffield based artist Tom J Newell who also designed the legendary ‘Be More Nulty’ logo. Money raised from this project will go to Roundabout, iForge, Disability Sheffield, Sheffield S6 Foodbank and Cavendish Cancer Care. Emma Draper, CEO of Cavendish Cancer Care said: “We are over the moon at the continued support from Tramlines these past few years. Not only the fantastic fundraising they have done, they have helped us be seen by more families across the region who need our support. Their recent donation will help us continue to provide our therapy services to those who need us now, more than ever, to ensure no one faces cancer alone.’ Timm Cleasby, Tramlines director of operations said: “In tough times we have to look after and help each other. Supporting local charities and groups is super important to the Tramlines team and knowing that the donations and awareness we offer helps in a small way means the world to us. RECIPE OF THE MONTH

HoisinMockDuckSpring Rollswith‘Eggy’Tofu FriedRice Ingredients 1 pack of spring roll pastry 1 banana, peeled Vegetable oil For the filling: 300g mock duck ½ tsp salt 1 leaf of Chinese leaf lettuce, finely sliced ½ onion, finely sliced A handful of coriander, finely sliced 2 spring onions, finely sliced 1 red pepper, finely diced 1 tbsp hoisin sauce For the marinade: ½ tbsp light soy sauce 1 tbsp sweet chilli sauce 1 tbsp sesame oil 1 tbsp hoisin sauce ½ tsp dark soy sauce For the ‘eggy’ fried rice: 300g cooked white rice 150g garden peas 150g sweetcorn 2 tsp soy sauce 1 tbsp sweet and sour sauce 100g tofu 2 tsp turmeric ½ tsp black salt 2 tbsp nutritional yeast
Preparation time: 1 hour | Cooking time: 15 minutes | Makes 8-10
Method Start by preparing to make the spring rolls. Carefully separate each of the spring roll pastry sheets and stack them before covering with cling film. For the filling Place a frying pan onto a medium-high heat and cook the mock duck with a dash of oil for around 6 minutes. Set the mock duck aside to cool, then finely chop and mix with all the remaining filling ingredients. Combine all the ingredients for the marinade, then stir the filling in to completely coat everything. To wrap the spring rolls, take the first sheet from the stack prepared earlier and use the banana to create a line of ‘glue’ along the edge. Turn the sheet so one of the corners is facing you, place a spoonful of filling onto the sheet and start to roll it away from you, starting from the nearest corner. When you have rolled half way into the middle, fold the two sides into the centre and then run the banana around the remaining edges. Roll away again to create the classic spring roll shape, sticking the edges down with banana. To cook the spring roll, half fill a wok with vegetable oil and heat to 170°c or until you have done the chopstick test. The chopstick test determines if the oil is hot enough, indicated by a hissing sound when you dip a wooden chopstick into the oil for 2 to 3 seconds. When the oil is hot enough, carefully add the spring rolls to the wok, no more than 10 at a time, and deep fry until they have turned crispy and golden. Use a slotted spoon to remove them then leave to drain on kitchen paper. For the ‘eggy’ fried rice Mix the cooked rice with the peas, sweetcorn, soy sauce and sweet and sour sauce. For the ‘eggy’ part of the rice, squeeze the tofu between your fingers so it looks like scrambled egg. Fry the tofu and stir in the turmeric, black salt and nutritional yeast. Add the cooked rice mixture to the tofu in the pan and fry on a high heat with a little oil. To serve Plate up the spring rolls on a bed of ‘eggy’ fried rice then drizzle hoisin sauce over the top. Enjoy!

EU driving permits Government guidance warns that we may need an international driving permit (IDP) in the near future, in order to legally drive whilst abroad. We currently do not need one, but if the UK leaves the EU without a deal, and it’s entirely possible that this will happen, an IDP will be necessary in order to drive in countries like France and Germany.
Recently qualified drivers The department for transport announced in 2019 that graduated driving licences were “being explored further,” including a possible nighttime ban for newly qualified drivers. A change in policy could mean that recently qualified drivers could face a new range of restrictions, alongside tougher penalties..
Intelligent speed assist Intelligent speed assist (ISA) systems are to be fitted to cars in the UK from 2020. This technology involves cameras which observe road signs and limit the speed of the vehicle.
Parking ticket grace period The UK government, as part of a new ‘code of practice’, announced that a new grace period for parking tickets is currently being considered by the British Standards Institution. If introduced, this would bring private parking facilities in line with those run by councils in England, which introduced a 10 minute grace period back in 2015.
Smart motorways The smart motorway network will cover 488 miles by April 2020, meaning we should expect some more updates and installations in the meantime.
