Our beloved pubs and restaurants may still be shut for some time, but I think we can applaud their efforts at adapting and offering a takeaway service. Our local independents have been working tirelessly to stay open, adapt and plan for the future with strict safety measures put in place. With that in mind, we’ve dedicated a portion of this magazine to those businesses that are reopening this month, or have reopenened in the last month or two. From trades people to garages, retail to restaurants, we can start to help them by spending our hard earned cash and contributing to the local economy once again.

A new chapter for Loxley Works Plans are in for a huge redevelopment of the historic site Patrick Properties Strategic Land has lodged an application with Sheffield city council for the redevelopment of the Loxley Works site, which has been vacant for some years. 300 new homes could be built on the historic industrial site if newly submitted plans get the go-ahead. The site’s history dates back to the 19th century when it produced bricks for the city’s steel industry, but is now derelict. Of the 300 residential properties, there would be a mix of family homes, elderly person’s accommodation, self-build plots and apartments. Facilities including a community hub, workspaces, bike hire and GP surgery, will also be provided along with new access, bus gate, village squares and a public realm.

Set within the picturesque setting of the Loxley Valley and the surrounding woodland, the proposal will provide attractive new homes for residents. "A new community hub will provide workspaces to encourage homeworking and a connected community. New community open space such as the village commons and the village squares will provide the space for outdoor community events and activities." The project could create more than 150 jobs during the five year construction phase. The new households are estimated to spend £8.9m per year, supporting further jobs in the Sheffield economy.

On yer bike! A new scheme is helping out local businesses across the city Sheffield businesses will be trialling a new way of delivering their goods this year, as Sheffield city council secures a grant for 32 E-Cargo bikes from the Energy Saving Trust.

Many of the businesses who will receive bikes later this year are social enterprises who work to redistribute food to those who need it in the city.
“As a council we are always keen to introduce innovative methods of travel into our city that have a really positive impact on our environment.
The E-Bikes are designed to replace the car and van journeys that are usually an essential part of daily life for businesses. Businesses who expressed an interest in using an E-Bike were required to commit 10% of the cost of the E-Bike and purchase the necessary protective equipment, such as helmets and hi-vis clothing.
"Given our current circumstances there is no better time to encourage more active and greener travel in to the everyday business model. “I’m looking forward to seeing how all our qualifying businesses use the bikes I and hope that this will encourage more companies to consider alternative modes of transport wherever they can.”

Robin of Locksley
In the 12th century, the huge forest of Loxley Chase extended as far south east as Nottinghamshire in where it met up with Sherwood Forest, the birthplace of the mythical figure Robin Hood. Or maybe not! Robin of Locksley was alleged to have been born in Loxley rather than Nottinghamshire in 1160. Ballads from the Middle Ages, such as ‘A Gest of Robyn Hode’ and Sir Walter Scott’s 1820 novel ‘Ivanhoe’ both indicate that Robin Hood was a Sheffielder. A campaign launched earlier this year by Sheffield Hallam and Sensoria Festival aimed to shed light on this often-overlooked bit of South Yorkshire legend. Sheffield council even went as far as drawing up a list of possibilities – including a monument in Loxley Valley and markers at key spots which could be developed with augmented reality.

curtain call Sheffield Theatres outdoor performances announced for later this year Sheffield Theatres has today announced that, subject to government advice, it hopes to bring Shakespeare to Sheffield’s outdoor spaces later this year. However, the theatre complex has also confirmed that the Crucible, Studio and Lyceum Theatres will remain closed for the time being. Shows which were scheduled to take place through to 20 July have been cancelled or postponed and customers with tickets will be contacted in due course. Artistic director Robert Hastie commented: “We want to
offer the city some joy and find a safe way to bring people together to experience live performance again. The last few weeks have reminded all of us here that theatre is what we do, not just the building where we usually do it. As long as we can make sure that everyone involved is safe, we can still be creative and make some great theatre happen for audiences around the city. If you can’t come to us, we’ll come to you. "We’ll be making these shows with the same bold energy we always do, telling Shakespeare’s timeless stories
with passion and humour, so that families, students and theatrelovers of all ages can share in the joy of live performance.” Sheffield Theatres will continue to liaise with Sheffield city council and monitor official guidance on outdoor gathering as part of planning its ambition to bring Shakespeare’s plays into the city’s green spaces. Further information will follow when further government advice is available. Due to the length of the lead-in
time for producing and touring theatre, some shows which were due to visit Sheffield in the autumn have postponed or cancelled their tours. The Theatres’ website (sheffieldtheatres.co.uk) provides up to date information on what’s on, as well as the ability to book tickets for future productions and discover new content and links to theatre that’s streaming now and activities for children and young people.

Sheffield Social Enterprise to offer free event tickets for NHS staff, frontline key workers and volunteers Sheffield based social enterprise, the Tickets for Good Foundation, gives free event tickets to charities and social groups via the Ticket Bank platform. These tickets are then distributed to individual service users. During the COVID-19 epidemic they have launched the Virtual Ticket Bank, allowing free access to online events and resources. From now until early 2021, they will be making all their physical and online donated tickets available to NHS staff, frontline key workers and volunteers. Established just over a year ago, the Ticket Bank program has been a runaway success with thousands of people receiving free event tickets via charity partners across the UK. During this time they have collaborated with high profile event brands such as Tramlines Festival, O2 Academy venues and AEG Presents. The primary goal is to improve mental health and wellbeing through access to events and cultural activities. The COVID-19 pandemic is taking a mental toll on many people, with frontline staff particularly at risk. They have had to adapt to new

Sheffield’s legendary artist and former NorthBound Magazine cover star Joe Scarborough has created an original canvas for Weston Park Cancer Charity. Acclaimed artist Joe created the original work for the charity to support people affected by cancer during the coronavirus outbreak. The sketch depicts a key worker theme was created in 26 minutes as part of the national 2.6 challenge to support charities like Weston Park Cancer Charity, whose ability to fundraise has diminished despite charitable services being needed now more than ever. Speaking of the sketch, Joe said: “I’ve

David Bevan

David Bevan worked for a number of years as a biology teacher in inner city London schools, often bringing students on field trips to the Peak District. He fell in love with the area and in the early 1980s he decided to relocate, taking a job as head of Sixth Form at Myers Grove school. He later worked at Sheffield College. He bought a house in Bolsterstone and was often seen running up and down the steep hills surrounding his home. In 1995 he decided to volunteer as an education advisor in Uganda with Voluntary Services Overseas. There he met his now wife, Grace. They eventually moved back to Bolsterstone where they had two daughters, Sophie and Grace. Grace and David are well known in the area. Grace has worked in the charity shops and takes part in many community groups. In 2012 Grace and David along with Grace’s brother, Spencer, set up a project to provide early years education in Rwanyana, Grace’s home village. Rwanyana is on the beautiful hills surrounding Lake Bunyoni but it is
an extremely poor area where the people mainly live on what they can grow in the poor soil. It takes about two hours on the rough roads to get to the nearest town. They founded a nursery school and every year they have added a new year group. The Bevan Community School now caters for 230 children. As well as a quality education the school provides two meals a day for the children, which can often be the only food they will get.
to buy food. On top of that they have had unprecedented storms in April resulting in landslides. The road to the town has been washed away and houses have been destroyed. Essential crops have also been lost.
Money for the project is raised from child sponsorship, donations and fundraising events. In 2018 a small group of trustees, all with close ties to the project, registered the work as a UK charity with the aims of providing education and relieving poverty. As well as the school money has been raised for a emergency aid clinic staffed by a trained nurse, two rainwater tanks, a hostel for 16 homeless children who also attend the school, and a safe to swim in the lake.
When David received information about the Fight Covid-19 Challenge where some elderly people were challenging themselves to walk a marathon in 10 days to combat isolation and keep fit, David decided to do it to raise money for Rwanyana Community Trust. David was diagnosed with Parkinson’s disease a number of years ago and struggles with day to day living so this was quite a challenge. He managed to complete the walk last month and has raised over £700 for the charity. This will fund the building of new homes and buy emergency food for destitute families.
Like everywhere else Rwanyana has been hit by the Coronavirus pandemic. But for them this means that food prices have almost doubled so many people can’t afford

The charity has been providing emergency relief funding but of course, cannot put on their usual fundraising musical evenings and fun quiz night in Stocksbridge.

Alan Pennington: Hendo's Hero! What started as a nod to Sheffield’s favourite relish has ended up as a city-wide beacon of hope that has entertained hundreds of children in lockdown as well as providing a cash boost for NHS Charities Together. Sheffield artist Alan Pennington originally drew his ‘Hendersons Local Hero’ design in 2009 but, following the virus outbreak, realised it had the potential to provide a symbol of hope and collaborated with local businesses The OEC, Napoleons and Owlerton Stadium to help spread the word. Now re-named, ‘Be A Local Hero’, his updated artwork has been given pride of place on the giant advertising hoardings on the Parkway and Penistone Road and is being viewed by thousands and thousands of people every week.
Alan Pennington also turned the iconic artwork it into a downloadable colouring sheet which has proved hugely popular amongst local children. He said: “It has been a huge honour to see my image providing not only inspiration and hope, but also much needed funds for the NHS and a way to keep kids amused in lockdown. “The last few week has affected us all in different ways and I’m lucky that I have a skill that I’ve been able to put to good use.”

Cupola Contemporary Art, on Middlewood Road, Hillsborough, has been an outlet for local, national and international artists to showcase and sell their work for almost 29 years and has become a mainstay of the community. S6 Heroes Shining a Light on the Burton Street Foundation
Nestled queitly inbetween the Penistone Road and Langsett Road is a unique and welcoming place with a huge heart set in a historic building. Usually, around 250 people visit the Burton Street Foundation every week to utilise its vital services for adults and children with learning difficulties. We spoke to the foundation’s Sam Torr to understand just how special a place the Burton Street Foundation is.

Can you tell us what the Burton Street Foundation is all about? Burton Street Foundation is a non-for-profit community site, we occupy the grounds of an old school but have spent years redeveloping to offer social spaces for groups in the community, provide bases for 14 businesses and run a variety of events throughout the year. We have an onsite public cafe and bar, with a professional kitchen to cater for conferences, birthday parties and evening dinners. We also provide workplace and health and safety training with a dedicated team of onsite training staff. However, the main remit of our work is to provide day services for adults and children with learning difficulties and disabilities. We currently have around 250 regular clients that attend Burton Street each week, operating explorative and engaging sessions throughout the day to develop our clients social, creative and holistic needs. From 9-6 Monday to Saturday, clients can participate in art sessions, produce a radio show, work on an allotment, learn to make meals, exercise through dance and sport, or engage in free expression. Our main focus is to deliver high quality social support for those most in need, to give often overlooked people the chance to bring something to their community - we have a large group of staff and volunteers with learning difficulties to help with the running of the site. We operate a yearly art exhibition, even with a dedicated art website for works created in sessions: burtonstreetarts.com. Burton Street is well known around Sheffield, but what challenges is the foundation facing during this pandemic and generally, in terms of support from council and central government? The main challenge is preparation for the reopening of the site to clients at some stage in the future. It is a major logistical challenge and we have lots of guidance to follow to ensure client and staff are safe and feel confident to return, whilst following very stringent social distancing. One major concern: our site is open, diverse and inclusive, but the social distancing guidance will change this, although we hope that this will be a temporary situation. Our clients benefit greatly from the many different groups and individuals that share and use our site, this is something we really don’t want to lose, but will be a challenge in the short term. Obviously, the financial impact on the foundation is causing us some concern, but we are looking at various grants to help see us through. Donations from any kind individuals/businesses are always welcome but would be especially welcome at the moment. It has been a testing time, but we must take time to praise SCC, Public Health and Sheffield CCG for working with us throughout the pandemic, and supporting us and other providers. They have been very good. Government guidance was clear at the outset, though currently less so, and changes on an almost daily basis. This isn’t helpful when trying to risk assess and plan for various scenarios for reopening.

The Burton Street YouTube channel has videos like ‘cooking with Lesley’, how else are you adapting during this period? As with all businesses during this time, we are finding new ways to deliver support to our clients and community. Given that our primary focus is the clients we support and their families, our team have mobilised greatly. We have been creating content and playlists on our YouTube channel to give clients activities, keeping them entertained and stimulated. We have a dedicated ‘client connect’ service that ensures are our clients are contacted on a daily/weekly basis, ensuring that the people we serve are known to be at the forefront of our minds. We are operating Zoom sessions, mirroring some of the sessions that we would usually operate, sometimes with up to 40 people on a call! Our staff have been working overtime to create activity packs that are sent out weekly, with everything from colouring books, messages of support, images, craft supplies and Makaton (dedicated sign language used in conjunction with speech and symbols) worksheets that can help communicate the situation we are in. One of our staff members even drove 111 miles in three days delivering packs in the community! We set up a shopping service to provide essential supplies to those who struggle to visit the supermarket, whether they attend Burton Street or not. We have had staff building trampolines to ensure clients can utilise the space they have at home, and back at Burton
Street, we are developing safe and secure measures to reinstate services as soon as is safely possible, taking in to account the government restrictions. And further to that, Burton St has been around for a while now – has the foundation changed over the years? The foundation has worn many different outfits over the years, gradually expanding to provide the range of services we have today. Initially set up as a community site, running clubs and events, we have really kicked on and now are one of the premier providers for disabled support in the city. Our organisation is geared up to deal with people with a variety of disabilities and conditions, we have tried to tailor the site to the needs of specific vulnerable groups, creating mock apartments to develop independence skills, providing support to families and siblings of children with learning difficulties in the school holidays. We even recently finished a three year
project creating a hydrotherapy suite. This new addition to the Bamforth building has even more session rooms, including low light sensory rooms and one of the largest hydrotherapy pools in the area to aid with exercise and movement. The public cafe has grown and now serves over 200 hot cooked meals a day, we are constantly on the lookout for new ways to improve the site, whether it be creating a sensory garden, developing a dedicated stage for performances and public speaking or creating therapy rooms for those who need to unwind. As with our mantra, ‘everyone has a part to play’ we occupy a constantly developing site, from the initial school classes back in the 70s to hosting a Christmas Craft Fair every year we try to determine what the community and our clients need and adapt accordingly. It will always be a multi-use site and that part of the excitement of the place, one day our hall could be filled with 100 delegates, the next it could be a location for short film. (Or feature films, the famous dole queue scene in The Full Monty was shot in our very own Burton Hall).

Any interesting bits of Burton St history for our readers? Foundations tend to have an inspiring story around their creations. Burton Street started its life in 1879 as Langsett Road School. It remained open as a school for almost a century, ringing its bell for the last time in 1976. After being put to various small scale uses, it finally fell into disrepair in 1992. By 1995 the site was scheduled for demolition. This is where things got interesting… The local community didn’t want to see the old school demolished. They broke in, occupied the buildings, and formed a new organisation called the Burton Street Foundation. They quickly began making great use of the site by running various clubs, events and community services. This proved there was a need for it to remain, and eventually the Burton Street Foundation took ownership of the site. Two decades later the beautiful Victorian buildings are a vibrant community hub. Hundreds use the site on a daily basis, and a huge range of activities take place. It’s a pretty big organisation now, but Burton Street is still run on a not-for-profit basis, and it never lost its soul. That’s what makes it the special and unique place it is.

She also used to help out with arts and crafts sessions – could you

tell us about the different types of sessions/workshops that you offer? The sessions and workshops are usually created based on individual clients’ needs and interests, that means there is a whole host of experiences that one can have at Burton Street. We run walking groups daily to explore the local area, tied in to that we often go out and review local attractions for disabled access for a blog/newsletter called Word On The Street. We have as previously mentioned a radio production session, we make short films and run film clubs, fitness and dance classes, art therapy and model making. There is something here for everyone, whether your interests be reading, singing, sport, cooking, or gardening. One of our big successes is a session called Articulate - a way to express yourself through creating art. We hope to give those who create art in our sessions a platform to exhibit hence our yearly art show. This years event was due to take place in April at Chapel Walk Artspace, however we are looking to secure a spot to showcase once the restrictions have been lifted. Other sessions include, My Day My Way, a session to give clients their own choice of how they want to spend the day, the clients plan and staff facilitate the activities which could be a walk to our allotment, making birthday cards or having a go on the trampoline in our sports hall. The sessions are always changing, one called Supertac
has been popular, it allows clients to learn and feel about different textures and materials, for example playing with cornflour and understanding the properties, there’s even a chance to have a foot rub! How important are those services to those who need them? The services we provide are absolutely crucial in a client’s and family’s development for a whole host of reasons. The sessions all have specific aims and goals, whether it to be to encourage friendship and social interaction through dance and play, or to develop independence skills such as our Time for Tea session which gives our clients basic cooking skills to hopefully one day allow them to experience as much independence as possible. Our workshops, whilst free flowing, allow clients to discover their likes and dislikes, but moreover a lot of the sessions give people purpose, one client discovered his love for rapping at Burton Street and has since gone on to make an album in our recording studio - before the lockdown, he was due to perform at the Leadmill! The activities we run also give much need respite for our clients’ families and carers, the time we support our clients allow families to live functional lives. It is the hope and the goal that developing our client’s interpersonal skills will lead to more autonomy, allowing them to
contribute and have a voice in society. How does a typical day at Burton St play out? The clients will start to arrive from 9am, possibly coming in for Breakfast Club, but sessions start at 10am and the place is a hive of activity. You can walk across the site and hear singing and stomping emanating from all the session rooms, the guys in the studio might be hitting some drums, and the client kitchen has the smell of hot coffee and toast radiating through the halls. Different groups will be milling around, playing on the apparatus or taking pictures in the sensory garden. There would usually be a few external groups on site, either taking part in training or attending a conference with a full three course dinner, so the kitchen will be working hard to prep dishes and our lunch service for anyone and everyone.
Between 12pm and 1pm the cafe is the place to be, all the tables filled with clients, customers and staff interacting as if it were a reunion barbecue, finding out how the first session has gone and generally catching up. After lunch, everyone filters back in to their second sessions, I might go and take photos, find out what’s new or create a poster for an upcoming event such as Burton’s Got Talent. I can usually tell which session is running by the sounds emanating from the room, stomping usually means it’s a Wednesday and Dance Your Socks Off is running above me. By 3pm the sessions start to wind down and the place is full of community transport and taxis arriving to take some of the clients home, the great logistical wrangle is usually headed up by Karen, ensuring everyone gets home safe and sound. By 4pm some of the late afternoon sessions are still continuing, I could walk in on a group watching a film, baking a cake, or checking out the one of the many external groups that use our site. By 5pm I’m heading home, but chances are there could be a dinner dance or private booking meaning the catering and hospitality team and gearing up for another night of celebration or party. By 10pm the site is closed, the walls still echoing the days fun, but it won’t be long til it opens up again, maintenance and prep may start as early as 6am to be ready for our guys to turn up and have another exciting day.

Personally Sam, what’s the best part of working at Burton Street? Having not worked in the social care sector before, by far the best thing about Burton Street is the people we support, I was totally blown away by how many kind and considerate people I work with and interact with on a daily basis, the sense of community is astonishing. There were a few minor grumbles when Tramlines announced it was moving the festival to Hillsborough Park back in 2018, but all of that was forgotten as soon as the park’s gates opened two years ago. Since then, we’ve had two incredibly successful festival weekends, right here in S6, bringing the likes of the Courteeners, Stereophonics, Noel Gallagher, Chic and Nile Rodgers, Two Door Cinema Club - to name just a few - to the Steel City.

Chasing Rainbows 6questions withs6 musicianmatt gawler ahead oftherelease ofhis new charity ep Hillsborough musician Matt Gawler has just released an EP, Ghost Town, in support of the NHS. We caught up with the S6-native for a natter about the EP and his plans for the future. Hello Matt, can you briefly tell us a bit about yourself for our readers? Hello. My name is Matt and I live in Hillsborough with my cat, wife and 1 year old. I work for Change Grow Live which is a charity that supports people with alcohol and substance misuse. Can you tell us about your EP and the reason for its release? Ghost Town is a chilled out acoustic charity EP of mostly covers, hopefully a little bit of something for everyone. I wanted to do something to try and raise money for the NHS during the pandemic, but I wanted to do it without asking for straight up donations at a difficult time. I thought this would be a great way to do it by giving something back. All the proceeds will be donated to the NHS via NHS Charities Together. You mentioned you were a key worker and many of your family were too – how has this period been for you and your family? The company I work for are being proactive and responsive, and my relatively new job of
just over a year and income is secure - but a year or so ago that would not have been the case and I dread to think how we would be getting by. We have been fortunate, and part of the reason for me wanting to release this charity EP and focus on it is that I am in a position to do so, which not everyone is. Musically, what are your inspirations? I’m sure it’s probably a cliché and I can only apologise if it is, but for me Ed Sheeran has made the acoustic guitar cool again so I’d have to mention him first. Otherwise some of the acoustic stuff that the Foo Fighters have done have influenced me quite a lot stylistically. I’m also a big fan of artists like Jon Gomm who use the guitar to make all those crazy tapping and ripping sounds whilst playing a tricky enough riff as it is, all while singing. I’d love to try and incorporate it myself one day. Sheffield has a long history with music, how much has that had an influence on your music? I was in a band for a few years at the time bands like Arctic Monkeys were becoming well known and I have amazing memories of the scene at that time. There were loads of bands about all

We all told ourselves ‘it could have been us’ but really they paved the way for us and we rode the wave! What a ride though. What are your plans heading forward? My plans for 2020 were to get out there gigging and getting involved in the scene again, I had no intention of releasing music. After we got locked down I figured who knows how long it will be until I can get back out there, so now my plans are to try and raise as much as I can with this EP and as soon as venues open I’ll hopefully be back at it. LAST MONTH MARKED THE 19TH YEAR SINCE SHEFFIELD’S HELEN SHARMAN MADE INTERSTELLAR HISTORY, BECOMING THE FIRST BRITON TO GO INTO SPACE. ELLIOT LUCAS TAKES A CLOSER LOOK AT THE JOURNEY UNDERTAKEN BY A STEEL CITY LEGEND Words by Elliot Lucas

In May of 1991, if you were to survey the milky black void of space, dipping and diving around ice giants, and asteroid belts, eventually you would stumble across the Mir Space Station. An ugly thing. A sideways-long tin pot protruding with bits and bobs and scientific instruments, floating above our humble, blue marble of planet. And in that tin pot, twiddling with knobs and dials, performing rigorous tests, you would find Helen Sharman, the lass from Grenoside. Born and raised in Grenoside, Sheffield, Sharman went to Meadowhead school (then Jordanthorpe Comprehensive), before pursuing a BSc in Chemistry at the University of Sheffield, and finally a PhD from Birbeck, University of London. Armed with these qualifications, Sharman would become a chemist for Mars Confectionery, working with the flavourant properties of chocolate (leading the media to eventually dub her the ‘Girl from Mars’). Sharman’s big break came after she answered a radio advertisement calling for applicants to be Britain’s first space explorer. When asked why she was chosen, from a pool of over 13,000 applicants, Sharman shrugged: “I was physically fit, good in a team and not too excitable, which was important. You can’t have people losing it in space. I think it was just my normality.” (Guardian 2016).
cosmonauts Anatoly Artebartsky and Sergei Krikalyov finally departed for the Mir Space Station. The station was notoriously shoddy, as spacefaring technology goes. Sharman complained of regular power failures, which would plunge the crew into total darkness (indeed, just ten years later, in 2001, the station was retired for good). While Sharman was there, she spent her days performing medical and agricultural tests, as well as bantering and fostering camaraderie with her Soviet colleagues, before returning to earth on May 26th. Dr. Helen Sharman has spent the years since communicating science to the general public, and especially trying to inspire generations of schoolchildren to follow in her footsteps. She has been rewarded for her achievements with an OBE, as well a star on the Sheffield Walk of Fame. helensharman.uk
With that, Sharman was whisked off to Star City, Russia, where she spent 18 months learning fluent Russian, studying mathematics and astrology, and learning to deal with the physical stress of space travel. On May 18th, 1991, Sharman and fellow

On a grim Tuesday morning in mid-January, amongst the swirling wind and rain from Storm Brendan, we met Chris Hardy – manager of the S6 Foodbank at St Thomas’ Church on Gilpin Street, just off of Penistone Road. He’s marching back and forth from the stock room across the road from the food bank centre, arranging signs and readying his volunteers for the first of two food drives this week. It’s hammering it down and he’s wearing a t-shirt, but still has more than enough time to welcome us warmly to the food bank just as it opens. In November of last year, the Trussell Trust released its ‘State of Hunger’ report which estimated that in 2018-19, at least three million food parcels were given out to people in need. More than half a million were given to children. The charity, which looks after 1,200 foodbank centres across the country, released figures which stated 36% of people who need emergency food parcels cite insufficient benefits payments. Whilst 18% cite a delay in the payment of benefits and 16% say a sudden change in benefits leaves them with no money for food to feed themselves and their families. This isn’t right. This is a national problem and quite frankly, a disgrace. The UK’s economy, which is currently the sixth largest in the world, has shrank and withered and re-grown following two and a half years of political uncertainty, the result of which appears to have had an adverse effect on those who need the benefits system and food banks to survive. People like Chris Hardy, who manages the S6 Foodbank along with some 80 plus volunteers, offer a safety net for those who are neglected and left behind by the current system. “It’s not as though they’ve got money in the bank or family to rely on. The real problem is not having that safety net around you and that’s what this food bank is and what it’s there for,” Chris tells us. “We’re here just to give a crisis amount of food. The benefits system is a struggle at times,
especially for the people we help. It works perfectly for 80% of people, but the 20% it doesn’t, it’s a long time that it doesn’t work for them. People say it’s about five weeks but the reality is it’s more like eight weeks and to go two months without any food in your cupboard and without any money in your pocket is a real problem and a real struggle for people.”
“to go two months without any food in your cupboard and without any money in your pocket is a real problem and a real struggle for people.” Chris works with 142 front-line agencies who make a decision on whether a person is in need of an emergency food bank voucher and where they can collect their food parcel from. “We’ve got this site here on Gilpin Street, we’ve got another site on Hannover Way, one in Crookes and one in Winn Gardens as well. It’s S6 and the surrounding areas. The important thing is they can come and sit at a table, have a chat and have a tea or coffee. “A lot of people we see are quite isolated and don’t tend to talk to people. We have a chat with them whilst we’re packing their food for them. We don’t have any food parcels pre-packed; it’s all about their dignity. We try to make the food parcels fit their diets and needs. Some people, if they aren’t from this country, don’t like certain foods so we try to make it fit their diet as best we can.”

It’s gone up 81% since Covid-19 hit these shores. That’s a huge amount of humans who are simply being failed by the current system in place. “The really important thing is we’re trying to get them out of their situation and we listen to what’s going on in their life so we can work out where to direct them in the local area,” Chris adds. “It’s really important that together, we’re working as a community. We’ve got around 80 volunteers that come and help out every week which is really, really amazing. It’s really fantastic.” The official line from the government is denial that its policies and behaviour don’t contribute to the need for foodbanks.

The Trussell Trust was founded in 1997 by Carol and Paddy Henderson based on a legacy left by Carol’s mother, Betty Trussell. The charity’s initial projects focussed on improving conditions for the 60 plus children sleeping at Central Railway Station in Bulgaria. In 2000, Paddy received a call from a mother in Salisbury in the UK about her children who were going to bed starving that evening. Paddy studied data on poverty in the UK and found that huge numbers of people faced going hungry as a result of a sudden crisis. Paddy started Salisbury Foodbank in his garden shed, providing three days of emergency food to local people in crisis. The charity’s network has grown ever since, and now offers additional support to help tackle the root causes that sweep people into poverty and build people’s resilience so they are less likely to need a food bank in the future and avoid such crises. “Crisis is interesting because when we first started we were doing three days and three vouchers,” Chris tells us. “But now our average voucher per person is just under five because of the length of time people have to wait to see the services they need to. The longevity of people’s needs has just grown and grown. I don’t see any value in stopping someone’s vouchers after three weeks of coming to see us because we want to see them through to the end of their problem or whatever it is going on in their life. “That’s why we’ve got the hub services here. We’ve got Shelter, life skills, job club, because you want people to be integrated back into the community. That’s my big thing, community. “Community helping community is my big aim. That gets harder when we go

“We spend £96bn a year on welfare and 95% of payments for Universal Credit are made in full and on time,” a spokesperson said to the Guardian recently. It’s a response that resolves all responsibility for itself, leaving the very people it’s meant to be looking after to fend for themselves. Chief executive of the Trussell Trust Emma Revie said following the 2019 General Election: “We must start putting money back into the pockets of people who most need support, by ending the five week wait for Universal Credit, ensuring benefit payments cover the cost of living and investing in local emergency support for people in crisis. “It’s in our power as a country to end the need for food banks. But if we’re to get there, we need our new government to act. We’re ready to share evidence from our network of food banks across the UK, and we’d encourage any new MPs to speak to their local food bank about why people are being referred for emergency food. It’s not right that anyone should have to turn to charity for the basics – this can change.” Whilst we chat to Chris on the door of the S6 Foodbank on Gilpin Street, he warmly greets people from all walks of life into the centre. There are young women with prams, older people on their own sat at the tables and people making use of the free coffee facilities. You wouldn’t think this was a centre for crisis, but Chris and his team of volunteers have made it a welcoming community and a place to come where the vulnerable need not feel neglected, intimidated and ashamed. It’s a nice atmosphere. People are talking and laughing. It’s busy. “We’re always busy. When temperatures drop down, we get even busier. Over Christmas we had 17 tonnes which works out to 41,000 meals, which is great and it sounds like there’s a lot of food but the reality is that won’t get us through the month. It is amazing don’t get me wrong, the people in this area and the businesses who’ve donated are amazing the need for food bank and they donate constantly, but the need goes up 17% every year so we have to meet that need somehow.
