WELCOME #5 NOV 19
A Word From Us
Welcome to the 5th issue of NorthBound Magazine. The dark nights are ushering in a time of year I like to call: Big Coat Weather. Understandably, some don’t prefer the cold winter but we’ve got so much going on this month that it’s hard not to get excited. At the time of writing, the amazing team at Bradfield Brewery is about to head over to the Nags Head and pour the first pint of Belgian Blue of the festive period. If you’re new to the area, this is basically our equivalent of a big Christmas light switch on: once that happens, you know the big man isn’t too far off shuffling down that chimney. Speaking of Christmas, the Everly Pregnant Brothers are once again putting on their famous ‘Crustmas Ding Dong’ gigs at the O2 Academy next month – frontman Shaun Doane joined us for a chat and waxed lyrical about his favourite spots in the Great North (of Sheff). Another frontman, Happy Mondays’ Shaun Ryder, stopped by for a chat too, with some pretty amusing anecdotes about his time in one of the 90s’ most iconic bands. Avid NorthBound readers may have noticed this is a slightly bigger magazine than the past few. That’s a testament to response we’ve had from readers all across Sheffield and all of your recommendations (thank you for that, truly) to local business owners who’ve chosen us to promote themselves and in turn, invested in us. It doesn’t go unnoticed, and thanks must be given to our advertisers and sponsors too. That’s your lot from me, have a good one and as always, any feedback is appreciated. Editor Paul Stimpson

MOVING FORWARD Plans developed for world’s most advanced child technology centre The project has been in development for the last three years with Sheffield Children’s NHS Foundation working with the support of Sheffield’s universities, the Sheffield Teaching Hospitals and the private sector for the most advanced child technology centre in the world. The Centre for Child Health Technology will become part of a number of international organisations at Sheffield Olympic Legacy Park aimed at improving public health and wellbeing. Former Sports Minister the Rt. Hon. Richard Caborn, project lead for Sheffield Olympic Legacy Park, said: “Investing in the CCHT and child health technology makes economic sense for the country and Sheffield City Region. Building of the Centre could be completed within two years, as we have seen with the adjacent Advanced Wellbeing and Research Centre (AWRC).
“Every £1 invested in child health returns more than £10 to society over a lifetime. So, a £20m investment to develop the CCHT has the potential to return more than £200m to the National Health Service in the future. “It means that once again Sheffield Olympic Legacy Park will be in the spotlight delivering improvements in public health and wellbeing as part of its tangible legacy of the London 2012 Olympic Games.” The CCHT has the potential to bring substantial economic benefits to the city and to unlock and trigger a wider opportunity by supporting 110,000 sqm of employment floor space, 3,485 gross full-time equivalent (FTE) jobs, 318 higher value professional FTE jobs and 1,000 construction related jobs. Facilities at the new centre will include digital and advanced technology laboratories, clinical space, a thermal imaging suite, therapy and rehabilitation rooms. sheffieldchildrens.nhs.uk

A NEW EXPERIENCE A £5m events venue is set to open this month next to Owlerton Stadium. The OEC will be nestled between two of Sheffield’s iconic venues: Napoleons Casino and Owlerton Sports Stadium. It will feature a range of multipurpose suites, catering for up to 500 guests. The venue will be capable of hosting weddings, conferences, large banquets, indoor sporting events and concerts and is due to open this month. Mark Allen, chief executive at The A&S Leisure Group – the owners of the venue, said: "We've had a vision for this venue for some time now. "With an excellent reputation for offering great leisure and hospitality at Owlerton Stadium and at our four Yorkshire casinos
and restaurants, this multi-million pound development will only add to that. “Our time has been spent getting the right team in place to deliver this project, from local Yorkshire suppliers and contractors, to the appointment of venue director, Gary Cook. Gary's reputation for delivering outstanding venues and events around the region precedes him. His previous role at Chesterfield Football Club saw him launch the new £15m stadium and we're confident he will help drive our vision forward making The OEC one of Yorkshire's finest events and conference venues.” owlertonexperience.co.uk

SHEFFIELD IS TWINNING Aim to make Sheffield a 'Toilet Twinned City' The Soroptimist International of Sheffield idea is looking for individuals or organisations to help get the city recognised as a Toilet Twinned City. Toilet Twinning is an international water and sanitation charity initiative which aims to improve sanitation in small village communities in Africa and Asia, thus providing safe toileting facilities for women and girls in particular, supporting dignity and self-respect. 1 in 3 people across the world don’t have somewhere safe to go to the toilet. Bad sanitation is one of the world’s biggest killers: it hits women, children, old and sick people hardest. In Africa, half of young girls who drop out of school do so because they need to collect water – often
from many miles away – or because the school hasn’t got separate toilets for boys and girls. Not having a loo puts people at risk of being bitten by snakes as they squat in the grass and makes women and girls a target for sexual assault as they go to the toilet in the open. By donating £60 to twin your toilet, you help fund a project in a poor community that will enable families to build a basic toilet, have access to clean water and learn about hygiene – a vital combination that saves lives. sigbi.org
Sir Arthur Conan Doyle
The home of Tramlines, Farmers Blonde and some of Yorkshire’s most beautiful scenery, there’s more to North Sheffield than meets the eye. Have you got an interesting historical fact that NorthBound readers need to know? Email paul@ northboundmagazine.co.uk
The famed writer of the Sherlock Holmes stories briefly lived in Burngreave, Sheffield, whilst gaining experience in the medical field. Sir Doyle arrived here in 1878 and spent a short period assisting Dr Charles Sydney Richardson at his clinic in Spital Hill – situated directly across from where the Burngreave Library stands today. However, it turns out he didn’t quite get on with the bearded doctor, writing in his diary: ‘'These Sheffielders would rather be poisoned by a man with a beard than saved by a man without one.’’ During his stay, Doyle was told about notorious local murderer Charles Peace – who later received a mention in the Sherlock Holmes story ‘The Adventure of the Illustrious Client’. www.NorthBoundmagazine.co.uk | 13

STREETS IN THE SKY The ‘Park Hill Shop’ has opened on Pinstone Street in Sheffield city centre, displaying merchandise, local artist’s work and a model room from student developer Alumno, the specialist company which will be opening Park Hill’s student accommodation next September. Designed by local Architects, Witham Cox, students will be able to get a taste of the planned accommodation at the newly opened shop located at 26 Pinstone Street opposite the Peace Gardens. David Campbell, MD of Alumno, told NorthBound: “Our project at Park Hill will allow us to offer a truly memorable living experience for students in Sheffield. They will be able to live in an iconic building and in a brilliant location for the city centre. “The shop will give everyone in Sheffield a chance to connect with this project and experience the transformation and rebirth of this legacy
first-hand. We are planning numerous exciting events throughout the year to help raise awareness of the project.” The first exhibition is by renowned photographer and writer Martin Gray who was commissioned by Alumno to document the change at site. Martin has interviewed many involved in the construction of the project who have a link and personal history with Park Hill from its original opening in the 1961. The shop front has been designed by renowned designer Ben Kelly famous for the Hacienda interiors in Manchester. Ben Kelly and Brinkworth Design have been commissioned to design the interiors and the community space at Béton House. alumnogroup.com

Kelham Island Museum’s show pub and event space The Millowners Arms will be opening permanently as a fully functioning pub, as local coffee shop Gaard take over the reins. The owner of Gaard Liam Bardell will give the pub and the cafe a new lease of life as a refurb began last month, which will eventually see the venue reopen as a fully functioning boozer. The Millowners has been a part of Kelham Island Museum for years, and normally hosts displays of Sheffield brewing heritage and acting as an events space on occasion. The venue opened back in 2013 and is complete with a traditional bar and a fireplace rescued from the Travellers Pub in Wadsley Bridge.

The owners behind West Street’s Molly Malones have placed plans with Sheffield city council to open a new venue on West Street called Hoffenbrau – a European-inspired bar and pub. Subject to planning permission, the bar will specialise in European beers and taking over three units: Woody’s and Ryan’s Vintage, which currently stands as a double unit. Marketing manager Simon Tomlinson told NorthBound: “After the success of Molly Malone's we’re really excited for our second West Street adventure! We’ve spent the last six months visiting lots of different bars all over Europe to fine-tune our Hoffenbrau concept and we can’t wait to start work. “West Street has always been at the heart of Sheffield’s nightlife and we’re confident this will be a jewel in its crown.” The new venue will take inspiration from traditional venues like the Hofbrauhaus in Munich. The new venue, which will create 25 jobs, is aiming to open at the end of January in 2020, subject to planning permissions.
Heart of the City Imagesreleased of howPinstoneStreet willlook oncework has been completed
The two new blocks along Pinstone Street, which were granted planning approval earlier this year, sit alongside each other and front on to the street opposite the Peace Gardens. The CGI images released last month showcase the attractive Victorian façades on Pinstone Street that are being restored as part of the work. They also show what the new Five Ways area will look like. Five Ways is the name being given to the pedestrianised interchange where Cross Burgess Street, Charles Street, Cambridge Street and Wellington Street meet. Councillor Julie Dore, leader of Sheffield city council, said: “We can see that the Heart of the City scheme is really coming to fruition now. The first stage is delivered and we are continuing to drive it forward, these new visuals show what the next stage will look like. This project is an important part of transforming our city centre so that it has the offer that the people of Sheffield deserve as one of the country’s major cities. “We have always said that we will deliver a scheme that raises the bar for what a city centre should be. We are maintaining our historic and attractive buildings whilst creating new places where people can live, work and be entertained.” For more info, head over to heartofcity2.com www.NorthBoundmagazine.co.uk | 17

Stannington Hardware
Open Arms Stannington Hardware Pet and Garden is a shop in Stannington village that’s known for selling absolutely everything. Reni and Andrew took over the business two years ago and admit they had big shoes to fill taking on the well-established business. “We felt at home right away,” says Reni. “The loyal customers welcomed us with open arms!” The shop has a real village feel and the couple have tried to keep that with their recent refurbishment of the shop. Andrew
Stannington
says: “It was very important for us to keep the character of the shop as that’s why we took it over in the first place.” Reni agrees. “The stock will change with the times and trends but we hope to keep the shop feeling like it always has to the community of Stannington.” The shop has been opened up in the refurbishment. It feels brighter and easier to
get around. Reni says: “We try to stock everything that our customers need and if we don’t stock it we will try and get it for them. “We’d like to thank our existing customers for their custom and loyalty and invite anyone who hasn’t been in to come and see us anytime!” 658 Stannington Rd, Sheffield S6 6AE // 0114 234 0241

WELCOME TO HILLSBOROUGH The only way is S6… Tramlines’ Alex Deadman on Hillsborough: “The people from the local area have welcomed us with open arms…the New Barrack Tavern absolutely loved it, and not just because it brought them more trade. The festival is shining a light on them and on Hillsborough as well. “It’s an area that is consistently overlooked. Last year we spent some time with several journalists covering the festival that had never even been to Hillsborough, never mind the park! They were really surprised by it. It’s nice to put a spotlight on the area and community, and not just for the football.”
Every summer since 2018, 40,000 people descend on Hillsborough Park for the annual Tramlines music festival. This has been instrumental in putting Hillsborough on the map (along with a certain football team in the area, of course), but the area itself is bustling with independents and longstanding businesses which make Hillsborough quite the unique place to visit...

It’s still here, 16 years later, and still flourishing under the owner ship of Paulo Amaral and Paulo Ferreira. The extensive Mexican and Italian menu is unique to the city and with over 30 years combined experience in the catering industry, both Paulos have established a very high standard of dining experience for their guests. Bradfield Road, S6 2BY // 0114 285 58 56 // settecollirestaurant.com
Where to drink:
Brass Monkey Just opposite the park on Middlewood Road is Brass Monkey – a craft ale and artisan gin bar. Opening back in December 2018, the intimate bar has settled into the area nicely, offering something unique to the community, but respecting its already-established neighbouring businesses and residents. 185 Middlewood Road, S6 4HD // 0114 233 2916
Hillsborough Hotel There’s always a warm welcome and a friendly atmosphere here, whether it’s in the main bar, conservatory or cosied up in the lovely beer garden. It won Sheffield CAMRA Pub of the month in October 2016, so you know it’s good! 54-58 Langsett Road, S6 2UB // 0114 232 2100 // hillsborough-hotel.co.uk 26 | www.NorthBoundmagazine.co.uk

Hillsborough Barracks This walled complex of buildings between Langsett Road and Penistone Road went through a major refurbishment in the 1980s and is now one of the busiest spots in Hillsborough. The barracks renovation still includes the famous clock tower, but now is a hub of shops including John Crawshaw’s, Pet Zone and Flames to name but a few. Hillsborough Barracks Shopping Centre, Langsett Rd, S6 2LR // 0114 233 5516
Where to stay:
The Garrison Situated within Hillsborough Barracks, the Garrison has over 160 years of history and is full of unique features. Most noteworthy a former military guardhouse and forged in the Victorian era, the grounds still hold many of the original walls, turret towers and arch keystones due to the listed status. Recently named by TripAdvisor in the top 10 best value hotels in the UK & Ireland, the Garrison is an independent, friendly hotel with a fantastic restaurant and bar attached.
Where to go for a night out:
The Owlerton Experience It’s been the talk of the town as The A&S Leisure Group continue to invest in the Owlerton Experience: three fantastic venues right here in S6. With £5.5 million currently being spent on the construction of new events and conference centre The OEC, the ‘Owlerton Experience’ is one of the finest nights out in the city. The A&S Leisure Group is no stranger to this business though, they’ve been in the leisure and hospitality game for over 50 years now, and also operate the two iconic leisure and entertainment venues which sit either side of the new venue; Owlerton Stadium and Napoleons Casino & Restaurant. Together, the three venues
make up the Owlerton Experience and between them there’s an abundance of exciting experiences available for you to enjoy, from greyhound racing at Owlerton Stadium, to a flutter at Napoleons Casino, to live music and banqueting at The OEC. Across the whole site the three venues will employ 300 people, and whilst all the venues offer something a bit different, you’ll notice wherever you’re at, you’ll receive the same warm Yorkshire welcome and a top level of customer service. Largest Independent Raw Feeding Specialists Proudly in business for over ten years now, the brilliant team at Real Pet Grub looks forward to helping thousands more customers deal with a number of health and diet issues for their fluffy friends. Meeting new clients and pets all day every day is what makes the job so special for the team. But with making so many new friends means leaving others behind, which is incredibly sad – these amazing pets are always held close to heart. The aim at Real Pet Grub has always been to create an environment where customers walk in as strangers and leave as friends. It’s not just another place that sells pet food. They’d like to give special thanks to every single customer they have dealt with in the past, without them the pet shop wouldn’t have that special feeling which keeps people coming back.

CHRISTMAS
BLUE CHRISTMAS It’s probably safe to say that Bradfield Brewery’s seasonal beer has become established as the ultimate winter warmer for Sheffielders at Christmas. As soon as it appears on the bar in pubs across the city, you know there’s not long to go until the big man arrives. If you fancy stocking up at home, the 4.9% ale is available in nine gallon cask, mini-kegs and bottles online now. bradfieldbrewery.com
YULETIDE MEZE Our sister company, Meze Publishing, spend most of their time yapping on about food. No fun when it’s a few days until pay day and we’re eating dry rice cakes for lunch. The plus side is they’ve released a huge range of regional cook books over the years as well as the incredibly popular Henderson’s Cook Book. Rumour has it the sequel one may not be too far off. They’ve also just released their first children’s book in The Orangutan Who Sang – it’s a corker. mezepublishing.co.uk
GET CREATIVE Sheffield artist Matt Cockayne has released a Steel City colouring book featuring 20 of his artworks stripped of colour – a perfect way to while away an hour or two after your Christmas dinner. No judgements if you can’t stay in the lines… goo-design.com A VINTAGE CRIMBO The award-winning Miss Samantha’s Vintage is an independent shop selling new dresses, skirts, tops, trousers and shoes and are reproductions of 1940/50s designs and looks. CHRISTMAS
Get Carollin’
A centuries-old tradition is still going strong in South Yorkshire
Every Sunday throughout November and December, a mixture of locals and visitors from all over the country gather at the Blue Ball in Worrall. They meet, pack out the pub and belt out Christmas carols – a 150 year tradition that shows no sign of stopping. Some of the songs go back as far as 1750. The Sheffield Carols predate modern carols by over a century and are sung with alternative words and verses to those more ‘mainstream’ songs we hear these days. They were originally sung in churches accompanied by self-taught artisan musicians, but from the 1830s onwards they began to die out due to church reform initiated by the Oxford Tractarian Movement. New carols were created, forming the Christmas carol legacy
we understand today. However, those original songs are still being sung in South Yorkshire and are being kept alive by the carollers at the Blue Ball in Worrall. Each year, starting in late November, the Blue Ball hosts carollers each and every Sunday in the run up to Christmas. Visitors from across the UK make the pilgrimage up to Sheffield to join in, making it a true bit of Christmas magic right here in the North of Sheffield. Fancy it? Head over to the Blue Ball Inn on Sunday 17 November and join the owners Carl and Emma Shepherd plus a pub-full of special guests for the ultimate Christmas warm up! facebook.com/blueballworrall // 320 Haggstones Road. Worrall, S35 0PD
TRY A BIT OF BLUE As soon as Bradfield Brewery’s seasonal brew appears on the bar in pubs across the city, you know there’s not long to go until the big man arrives. If you fancy trying it, it’ll be on the pumps of the majority of boozers in Sheffield. The Nags Head and the King and Miller in Deepcar are your best bets. If you fancy stocking up at home, the ale is available in nine-gallon cask, minibottles and kegs online. bradfieldbrewery.com TAKE A WINTER STROLL The North of Sheffield is one of the most picturesque areas in Yorkshire. Sat on the edge of the Peak District, there are tons of routes and incredible vantage points. Luckily for us, the Bradfield Walkers website is a gold mine of information on the area. We recommend the brisk walk from Low Bradfield to Damflask reservoir, stopping off at either the Nags Head or Our Cow Molly’s Ice Cream for refreshments. bradfield-walkers.org.uk

Happy Mondays frontman on Bez, the 90s and not going to the pub anymore...
52 | www.NorthBoundmagazine.co.uk
SHAUN RYDER
The Happy Mondays seem to have always lived their career in madness and their current touring set up embraces their earlier, more heady days with a take on those fantastically weird times when the unlikely lads came out of Salford and changed British pop culture forever. The band kicked-off the late eighties culture shift by marrying the dancefloor to the guitar and embraced an openended, no rules musical vision that could somehow shoehorn Can and Chaka Khan into the same song and must have been the inspiration for their label boss Tony Wilson’s great quote about Manchester kids having the best record collections. They are lining up for their bi-annual celebratory tour and gig at Sheffield’s O2 Academy on 22 November with a Greatest Hits package that soundtracked the wilder excesses of the times and offers a portal into just how glorious and lifeaffirming great pop music can be. In 1989, the Happy Mondays kick-started a musical revolution; they married the dancefloor to the post-punk end of indie rock, they were at the front line of the culture, hanging-out in the Hacienda. They were the core of the new ecstasy culture that would change the city forever, with its 21st century hi-rise confidence and vibrant city centre tracing back to the Happy Mondays’ table in the dark corners of the famous nightclub. They gatecrashed the Top Of The Pops fancy fashion threads with their Salford street smarts and brought a new vernacular into the corridors of pop culture. They lived fast and they lived hard. Bez – the dancer whose face freeze-framed just what it was like to be high in every rave in the UK, and Shaun, the singer with his poetic leering genius capturing the times in shards and snippets of dark poetry and black comedy snapshots.
Now 56, Shaun Ryder has not only lived to tell the tale, but is doing it better than ever as he details what fans can expect from the upcoming tour. “We will still be alive. We will still be breathing. It will be a good show, better than ever really. The sex and drugs have gone and now it’s just the rock ‘n’ roll. We are better than ever live and when I listen to the old records - like Bummed and I listened to the album for the first time since 1988 - I said to myself: pat yourself on the back, lad.” The Mondays have survived to put their house in order and deal with a creative burst that started in 1987 with their more experimental debut album Squirrel and G-Man Twenty Four Hour Party People Plastic Face Carnt Smile (White Out), soundtracking strange late night parties for the-then much smaller scene of faces in the city. It bobbed around in the no man’s land of post-punk Manchester after being released on Tony Wilson’s Factory Records, then forging into a new era with New Order as their prime band. They may not have fitted in anywhere, and for the Mondays it was difficult to place just what they were. Tony Wilson was about the only person in town who saw it, as Shaun recognises. “Tony thought there was an art in the way the band ganged together and the way we huddled when we talked. He could see the art in all that. I could see an art in the way we dressed, how we looked and how we talked to each other, but I would never make a big deal out of that.”
The 1988, follow-up album Bummed was a manifesto release. Produced by Martin Hannett, its spacious sound was modern psychedelia that was drenched in the new drug in town as it lolled around on that very distinctive Motown bassline groove. With Shaun’s brilliant stream of consciousness lyrics and the band riding a perfect rolling groove, it was infectious and brilliantly odd all at the same time. The band’s new trip was about to be copied all over the UK, and as they slowly caught on you could feel a revolution coming to every town. The Mondays’ third album Pills ‘n’ Thrills and Bellyaches further explored this brilliant new amalgamation - and very few bands in the UK didn’t have a go at the new magic alchemy. That glory period was punctuated with proper hits and it all felt so effortless. Pop culture had shifted on its axis and the lads from Salford had kick-started something. And in pop culture, when things move on, even the innovators and the masters of the form can be caught out.“ “With the next Monday’s album, Yes Please, it all got too much and I didn’t like the music. I got bored, and when I get bored I go to the drugs, which this time was crack. I also had a f*cking smack habit early doors, before the Mondays, and I got off that when ecstasy came along. I had that terror of going on stage and playing universities when we got bigger, and all those clever people there. That used to affect me, but I’ve got past that now.” Ironically, they are now studying Shaun’s lyrics on courses.
“Thesex and drugshave goneand now it’sjust the rock‘n’ roll”

“As a songwriter, my job is to write songs and tell stories from phrases that pop up, like ‘twisting my melon man’, or Bez will say something like ‘I’m proper wankered, I’m having a spam snack.’ I grab these phrases and it’s then a question of how do I turn that into a story? In a song, with each line, I want to send a picture into someone’s head. I can see this picture with every line I do and I want the listeners to get the pictures as well from what is a lot of different things that are not connected and make them fit into a story.” The music was the same - a perfect mix of inspired genius and perfect steals. The Mondays always instinctively understood pop music.
“Idon’t havetobe offmynut anymore. I’mhappy withwho Iam”
“When we first started, the band A Certain Ratio worked across the way and I would go across and write with them and say ‘what you need is a big pop hit so you can carry on with what you are doing’. And we would come up with something and then I would be out of the room for 15 minutes. I would come back and they had put all the weird stuff on it, which was too much for a pop song. Somehow, with the Mondays, we were always working in pop, from the Motown basslines onwards.” This brilliant zigzag career is perfectly underlined by this bi-annual tour. On top of their game, the band are doing a great service to the anthems of a wild time when everything was possible. “Between me and you, the Mondays on stage now are better than ever. We are adults now and everyone can see the truth. We worked out how to be a band. We all get to the gig differently and show each other respect…and it doesn’t hurt that the songs are brilliant! I’m not an artist and I don’t say I come alive on stage. When I walk on stage I feel naked and I feel like I’m dying. I’m not a proper artist. I come alive when I come off stage and I’m with normal people and I can be Shaun. I don’t have to be off my nut any more. I’m happy with who I am. I know from doing TV that I can just go and act, play the part.”
Is he now a disciplined person? “I can be. I have a short attention span and if I get bored the trouble starts. But I’m an old man and I read the papers now. I’ve got a solid foundation at home with Joanne and my little kids and I like getting back to that. I don’t go to the pub any more. People expect me to do that, especially if I’m somewhere that Bez was the week before - birds full of cocaine turn up because they think I’m like Bez! He still lives the life on his hippie commune. He likes to do what he does. He’s older but he still likes it out there.”
Somehow, in all that beautiful madness, there they are: Shaun and Bez - the folk heroes whose very existence reminds a generation of a time when everything was possible. The fact they survived and came to terms with their beautiful madness is inspirational - the fact that they can do this with the Happy Mondays’ tour and its perfect soundtrack, perfectly executed, is a cause for wonder.
The Happy Mondays play the O2 Academy in Sheffield on 22 November. Head over to academymusicgroup.com/o2academysheffield for tickets.
Shaun recollects the fuzzy feeling of those heady times in the nineties. “Fuzzy didn’t start until the nineties. I can actually remember the sixties and listening to the Tony Blackburn show and walking to school in the dark. In the nineties, we were a bunch of young men immersed in the rock ‘n’ roll lifestyle like we wanted. It’s weird when people say it had dark moments. They don’t know how bad it is on the streets. The music business is a bubble where you wake up. Out there in the real world I’ve had friends die or end up in jail. I had my drug life in a bubble, there was always a way out. It was like a video game with a secret door and it’s dead easy.”

O’Neill’s
Trim Star New men’s grooming salon at Fox Valley is a cut above A new barbers and men’s grooming salon opened up at Fox Valley earlier in the summer as part of the newly created Sandersons Spa area. O’Neill’s Gentleman’s Barbers’ style is inspired by the smash TV series Peaky Blinders and the male grooming service offers beard trimming, hot shaves and facial massages, whilst stocking a range of grooming products including American Crew products. The shop was even used recently as the set for a Topman advert. It will be open seven days a week and operates both an appointment and walk in hair cutting service. Jake O’Neill, who has worked for Taylor Taylor and Savills in Sheffield, was after a particular vibe for his new venture. “I want it to really feel like a social club and somewhere that men feel that they can relax in, have a drink and a chat and enjoy the lovely environment we’re creating. Initially I’m going to be working on my own but will be looking to recruit in the future. “It was great when we opened back in July and it’s great to be part of Fox Valley and Sandersons here in my home-town.” The managing director of Dransfield Properties Mark Dransfield, who heads the department store, said: “Sandersons is a family owned and independent business and we are passionate about supporting other businesses like O’Neill’s. The new barber’s shop is going to look fantastic and we’d like to wish him all the very best with his launch.” O’Neill’s is open now at Fox Valley where the Pettits Shoe Shop used to be. facebook.com/oneillsgentlemansbarber

Joe Scarborough The Pitsmoor-born artist takes us round his special place in Sheffield, and gives us some typically poetic soundbites along the way…
58 | www.NorthBoundmagazine.co.uk
“My favourite place, well, it’s actually a walk. If you go to Endcliffe Park and walk right up through to the Norfolk Arms in Ringinglow. I love it, either way. You know, maybe have a pint at the end. It reminds me that this is basically a city in Derbyshire, we’re that close to it. We don’t think about counties anymore do we? I don’t mind the tweed of North Yorkshire but I prefer the working clothes of the South, I equate to the similarly attired! When you arrive at the end and turn back, you can see your city. I look at it and think ‘that belongs to me’. I share it with other people of course, but it’s my city.
I really love that. I like vantage points and as you know, Sheffield is like Rome and is built on seven hills. I don’t have many problems anymore, but if I do I’ll do this walk. You can just take in the scene, it’s George Cunningham country up there of course and I can see why he loved it so much. It’s absolute solitude and that becomes a treasure in life. You can also drop down through Dore or Eccy Road or get the bus when you get to my age you know where all the best bus stops are. I don’t use my bus pass, I brandish it like a badge in CSI. But when you do this walk, and it’s a walk up through Sheffield’s history as most of them are, you feel you’ve passed a test when you’ve finished. Especially when you’re 82!" Joe Scarborough’s incredibly popular retrospective ‘Life in the Big Village’ is entering its final month at Weston Park Museum. Do pay a visit before 24 November. NEW KID ON THE BLOCK
A taste of modern Britain is coming to Ecclesfield A brand new British-themed restaurant is opening in Ecclesfield on 2 November, with head chef Jordan hoping to bring something new to the dining scene. Speaking to NorthBound magazine, Jordan said: “It’s going to be nice food and of a high quality. We’re looking at a modern British menu with a European influence.” 71 has three separate menu, one for a pub lunch, one for breakfast and one for a la carte. The last of which features dishes like pan-fried chicken, beef cheek and duck breast, whilst heartier dishes like pie and fish and chips is available on the lunch menu. The breakfast menu is similarly tasty, with eggs benedict, smoked salmon and a full English listed as the early morning offering. It isn’t the first foray into the industry for Jordan. “I worked at the School House in Normanton and then at the Cross Scythes in Totley so I’ve been in the industry a while. I’ve always wanted to have my own and this place in Ecclesfield came up! “The restaurant and bar areas are completely separate, so if people want to come in for just a drink, the people having a meal won’t be disturbed.” The restaurant will be opening on 2 November, open 08:30am to 10:30pm Monday to Saturday and 4pm on Sundays. 71 Monteney Crescent, Sheffield, S5 9DP // 71restaurantandbar.yolasite.com www.NorthBoundmagazine.co.uk | 65
Every year since it was first produced in 2005, this seasonal ale has grown in popularity and this year is gearing up to be the best yet. Farmers Belgian Blue is a 4.9% ABV ale with Christmas berry overtones and a slight blue tint to the head, making it a well loved and distinctive winter warmer. This year’s first barrels of Belgian Blue were exclusively available at the brewery’s pubs The Nags Head and the King & Miller, from 4pm on Thursday 31st October and in the first hour it flew out of the pumps at faster than a pint per minute! Farmers Belgian Blue was first created in 2005, the year Bradfield Brewery began operating. Setting their sights high with their wish to create
Belgian Blue rears again for Christmas 2019 66 | www.NorthBoundmagazine.co.uk
an unusual festive brew that everyone would love as much as Christmas itself, ideas began forming and this unusual but charming brew was created. The name of the festive ale was an obvious choice, following on with the Famers Ale theme and naming their ales with different cattle breeds – the Belgian Blue breed sprung to mind with talk of a slight blue tint to the head, and there it was born – Farmers Belgian Blue.
FOOD + DriNK
Whilst enjoying continuing success with their range of cask ales, Bradfield Brewery are also celebrating the opening of their third brewery tap, The Wharncliffe Arms in Wharncliffe side. After acquiring the pub from a private vendor in September this year, the brewery will re-open the pub doors in mid-November. Offering Farmers Ales from just £2.50 a pint, the pub will be managed by Bethany Hartley, who, having been born and bred in the pub industry, is no stranger to offering a welcoming smile and a good pint of real ale! It promises to be a busy run up to Christmas for Bradfield Brewery, keep up to date with new on brews and special offers by visiting their website at www.bradfieldbrewery.com or follow them on social media @bradfieldbrewery.
Normally the brewing process takes around a week to complete before the beer is ready for shipping out nationwide. “Throughout the year Farmers Blonde is the best seller, until this time of year when Farmers Belgian Blue takes over,” the brewery team tells us. What’s the secret behind the blue tint, then? “It’s a secret!” Jackie agrees. “It’s a bit of Christmas magic sprinkled in!” Tradition means the brewery’s own taps, the Nags Head and the King and Miller are the first places to serve Belgian Blue in cask and the brewery team are all in agreeance that “to experience Belgian Blue in its finest, purest form, you have to try it in cask”. Belgian Blue is available from the brewery’s on-site shop from the 1st November in bottles, 5 litre mini-kegs and 10 litre beer in a boxes, with deliveries of casks to pubs taking place from Monday 4th November. The brewery shop opening times are 8am-4pm Monday to Friday and 10am4pm on Saturdays. The shop will also be opening 10am-2pm on Sundays and until 7pm on Thursdays and Fridays, during December, up until Christmas. December is also your chance to try before you buy with sampling weekends taking place 10am-4pm on Saturdays and 10am-2pm on Sundays.

PLANT POWER!
This November sees the return of World Vegan Month, and with Sheffield being one of the UK’s best spots for veggie and vegan cuisine, there’s plenty to choose from whether you’re wanting to go full plant-based diet or just fancy trying a few dishes… Sunshine Deli
facebook.com/SunshineDeli.Co.UK // 989 Penistone Road // S6 2DH Sarah Short opened the Sunshine Deli on Penistone Road back in March 2018. The homely café is, as the name would suggest, a positive experience no matter what time of day you’re there. Sarah explains why. “When it comes to food I’m very influenced by my nan. I’ve always been a feeder – I love to make good food for people – and we have a great environment here in the deli. A lot of customers say it’s like sitting in someone’s kitchen! So it’s homely and comforting, which is also how we like our food.” We recommend: Sarah covers a wide range of cuisines on her menu, but the vegan fried chicken party bucket is top notch.
New Cod on the Block
17 Commonside, S10 1GA If you still need your chippy fix, New Cod on the Block in Walkley have a special vegan menu for the plant-based dieters. With vegan burgers, vegan chicken nuggets and vegan sausages, there’s plenty of choice here. We recommend: The battered vegan sausage, of course. 70 | www.NorthBoundmagazine.co.uk
FOOD + DriNK Fox Valley
foxvalleysheffield.co.uk // Fox Valley Way, Stocksbridge, S36 2AB As well as hosting a monthly vegan food market (last Saturday of every month!), Fox Valley has numerous restaurants that offer some of the tastiest vegan dishes around. The likes of Zorro Lounge, Neo-Med and McGilveray’s offer a widerange of plant-based dishes for your perusal. We recommend: Neo-Med’s ‘melanzana ripiena’ – a baked aubergine stuffed with chickpea and walnut couscous.
Dana
danacafe.co.uk // 214 Crookes, S10 1TG If you’re looking for a hearty vegan brekkie, look no further than Dana in Crookes. The coffee house and café serves delicious food and drink sourced ethically and locally. It was recently refurbished with warm wood panelling, clean white walls and bright splashes of yellow and turquoise to make the light-filled space homely and welcoming. We recommend: Full veggie or vegan breakfast with vegan bacon and scrambled tofu.
Cutlery Works
cutleryworks.co.uk // 73 – 101 Neepsend Lane, S3 8AT The largest independent food hall in Northern England hosts the homes of a mix of permanent and semi-permanent outlets, inspired by the hawker markets of South East Asia and ensures a unique dining experience. With an eclectic mix of tastes and cultures, this food hall has proven itself a popular destination for diners and food lovers around the city, in particular with vegans and vegetarians due to excellent array of options. We recommend: Tarka daal from Ma-Ba or the vegan pie from Pie Eyed.
Church – Temple of Fun
templeof.fun // 4a Rutland Way, S3 8DG Live music, vegan food, cocktails, retro gaming and South American religious iconography – Church’s Temple of Fun has become a huge hit since opening in the summer of 2018. The brainchild of Bring Me The Horizon lead singer Ollie Sykes, the venue is situated inside the historic Osborn Works on Rutland Way, a short stroll from the bustling Kelham Island area. We recommend: The gluten-free gyros kebab. It’s huge, so you can save some for lunch the next day. Sorted.
Old Horns Inn
theoldhorns.co.uk // Towngate, High Bradfield, S6 6LG This traditional country pub is set in the beautiful picturesque village of High Bradfield. With some of the most breathtaking views in Sheffield, it’s a pub that if you haven’t visited yet you should really put on your list, especially because of its huge food menu which ranges from sandwiches, sharing platters and a Sunday carvery, plus a healthy selection of vegan options. We recommend: The sweet potato falafel salad or the impersonator burger – both fantastic dishes!
The Punchbowl
punchbowlcrookes.co.uk // 236 Crookes, S10 1TH After a five month refurbishment, True North reopened the Punchbowl in Crookes last month. With a new management comes a brand new menu and, as per with True North boozers, it is spot on. We recommend: The vegan fish and chips, made using banana blossom.

10 Questions
The Everly Pregnant Brothers frontman talks Christmas gigs, other projects and what makes Sheffield so special…
1.
First of all Shaun, how are you? What’ve you been up to? Ayup, I’m really good at the moment, I’ve had a month of ‘holiday’ between day jobs but I’m about to start a new job which is right up my street. Obviously I’ve been gigging with the Brothers, but also doing a lot of DJ gigs, hosting and compere gigs and a bit of stand up comedy, as well as writing new songs with my other band, Tiny Barbara’s Surf Club, which features old mate Toby Foster and Tim McNeill from the band Fear Lies.
2.
It’s been another great year for the Brothers, (Tramlines, two Crimbo gigs coming up), how are you all? Well, we’re fast getting the title of the illest band in the world, not in a hip hop sense, more in the fact that we’re a bunch of crocks! Bails has a back injury, Pete is back to almost 100% after his liver transplant, Dave has had ticker troubles and I’m still a big fat lad with diabetes! Other than that we’re all doing well, and it’s been a fantastic year.
3.
What can we expect from those Christmas gigs? Any surprises in store? The Christmas gigs are always special, the atmosphere is always a big party, the crowd are always amazing and the guests just get better and better. No spoilers, but once again we do have some fabulous guests this year, some old faces, some new, and one thing is certain, Nick (Banks) is going to be a very busy lad over the two nights!
4.
Look forward to it then! It was the 10th anniversary of the EPB’s first gigs last month, could you pick out a couple of highlights from this year? Tramlines obviously, to play on the main stage for the second year running alongside the likes of Reverend & The Makers, Johnny Marr and the Courteeners was great, but what made it really awesome was the crowd, over 30,000 of them, all singing along, waving, bouncing and generally giving us the love that spurs us on. We have an amazing following, any band would love to have fans like ours. Other highlights have been Holmfirth Picturedrome, Woodseats Club, Islington O2, and the little intimate gigs that we’ve done along the way too.
“Sheffield is the hidden jewelin thecrownof thenorth, once discovered, always loved.”
5.
Any plans for 2020? A return to the Fat Cat roof perhaps? Sadly, due to the increase in residential properties around Kelham Island, the Fat Cat bog roof is now out of bounds, but we are doing a couple of special gigs throughout next year. There’s some smaller ones and a couple of big gigs that I hope the fans will be really up for. Expect a couple of surprises as well. Also we’ll be starting work on a new album to follow up the latest album Biffin’s Bridge which is out now! Also, our full back catalogue is going to be available to buy from HMV in Sheffield and Meadowhall.
6.
What else have you been up to this year? Any other projects? So, there’s the other band. We’ve opened Wentworth Festival with for the last three years. We’ve played covers up to now but now we’re writing our own songs, and we’ve got a new name ‘Tiny Barbara’s Surf Club’. That’s going really well. I’m doing a lot of DJ gigs, some regular slots at Annie Murray’s Irish Bar in Barnsley, as well as parties and pub gigs. I’m doing a lot of work as a host/compere/MC for various events, and I’ve done a few spots at the Last Laugh Comedy Club at the Lescar. Back in March I returned to my first love, acting. I appeared in a play called ‘Me Brother Dan’ set during the first World War, and written by an amazing young woman called Molly Meleady. I’m looking at more acting in the New Year and maybe even writing a play of my own. I like to be busy!
7.
You’re known to be a fan of the Old Horns up in Bradfield, what is it about the place you love? The Old Horns, apart from being a great pub with great food, is situated in one of the most beautiful spots in the whole of the area, if not the North. It’s a place where I can go, sit, and just collect my thoughts, relax, and recharge my batteries. It’s like therapy, you always walk away feeling uplifted. Agreed! Any other spots up in the Great North (Sheffield) that have a special place in your heart? I’d have to say Our Cow Molly up at Dungworth, for the same reason. It’s a lovely place run by lovely people and has a breath-taking view over Sheffield.
8. 9.
Great shout! Can you sum up Sheffield in a sentence? Sheffield is the hidden jewel in the crown of the north, once discovered, always loved.
10.
Love that. Last but certainly not least, what would be worse: running out of Hendo’s, or having to go to Rotherham? Going to Rotherham is something I do a lot. TBSC practice in Rotherham and I like the place a lot. Running out of Relish, that’s something I can’t even bring myself to think too much about, there’s always at least two bottles in our pantry at any time. I’ve been and bought Henderson’s just because I sensed we might be running low! Keep up to date with Big Shaun on facebook.com/BigShaunEPB

Where to eat lunch:
Town Square
This trendy café sits somewhere between a coffee shop and a restaurant. In the morning time, you will see people eating breakfast, having coffee with friends, working on laptops and meeting clients. This casual vibe continues through lunch and well into the afternoon. By dinner time, the lights are dimmed, the candles are lit and the connected bar opens. Less laptops, more craic. Less business meetings, more social gatherings. The café is also host to some of the best events and gigs that Belfast has to offer. So scoot on over to townsquarebelfast.com for a nosy at what they’ve got planned for your visit. 45 Botanic Avenue, BT71HZ // townsquarebelfast.com
Where to eat dinner :
Muddlers Club
Tucked away between Waring Street and Exchange Place in the historic back streets of Cathedral Quarter, the Muddlers Club is one of the best spots for European-style snap in Belfast. Named after the secret society that met there over 200 years ago, head chef and owner Gareth McCaughey hand-picks the best of home-grown produce daily to ensure the quality of each dish served. The open kitchen provides a sense of theatre and allows the diner to watch as ingredients are transformed into meticulously simple dishes in front of them. With a carefully considered wine and an extensive cocktail list, you will find a warm welcome at The Muddlers Club. 45 Botanic Avenue, BT71HZ // townsquarebelfast.com
Where to visit:
Titanic Museum
Where to drink:
The Crown
One of the oldest pubs in Belfast, the Crown is also one of the most famous boozers in the city. Sat opposite the Europa coach station, it’s likely one of the first landmarks you’ll see when arriving into the centre. It looks just as stunning inside too, where you'll find ten elaborately carved wooden snugs, lettered from A to J. In these snugs you'll find gunmetal plates for striking matches, and an antique bell system. No finer place to sup on the black stuff. 46 Great Victoria Street, BT2 7BA // nationaltrust.org.uk/the-crown-bar
Titanic Belfast is the largest Titanic visitor experience in the world, standing on the very harbour that the great boat was built. Make your way through nine interactive galleries of the Titanic Experience, explore the symbolism of our iconic building with The Discovery Tour, dine in Bistro 401 or browse for an exclusive gift in our Titanic Store. Stories to Tell A selection of fictional short stories from some of the city’s most celebrated writers, The Book of Sheffield was launched at Off the Shelf Festival last month. Prior to the event Exposed’s Rebecca Finlay spoke to Catherine Taylor, who was tasked with editing a collection of work that delves into the complex, multi-faceted identity of her hometown.
How was the idea of the book originally conceived? Comma Press is based in Manchester and it deals only with short fiction. It’s been running this city series, I believe, for over a decade now. They’ve gone all over the world with short stories from places like Tokyo, Gaza and others closer to home. Last year they put out the Book of Birmingham, and they’ve also done ones for Leeds and Newcastle. I grew up in Sheffield and I’m a critic, writer and an editor. I’ve written a few articles about the city that have been published in the Guardian and the Time Literary Supplement. These were kind of forming the basis of a memoir that I’m writing about the city called The Stirrings. While I was working on that I was thinking about why Comma hadn’t done one on Sheffield yet. I knew the press, having written about their books in the past, so I sort of nagged them! The remit from Comma I was given was very loose: any genre, from Sheffield’s past, present or future, or even an imagined past, present or future. This meant that there was a huge amount of scope for all the writers.
“Ten different writers provide ten different lookout points, looking down onto this city and expressing what it means to them.”
84 | www.NorthBoundmagazine.co.uk
How did you go about choosing the contributors? Some of them I knew already just because I’ve worked in the publishing world for a long time. As it was a collaboration with Comma, we just went through a list of people and threw around some ideas. There were other people we would have loved to contribute, but they couldn’t because the timing was quite limited. We only had a brief window in terms of commissioning and putting the book out by the time we’d agreed it was going to happen. What sort of themes and ideas are explored in the book? With Margaret Drabble, for example, we’d already found an existing story that would have worked well. But she said that she actually wanted to write a new story. Hers is very interesting because it touches on the #MeToo movement. She’s writing it from the perspective of someone who was an actress in the seventies, and there was an incident at the Crucible theatre that she looks back on and thinks whether it was a #MeToo moment. It sets something that’s very current in a different context. Gregory writes about migrancy and alludes to the refugee crisis. Naomi writes about being in a band and breaking up, but she’s written it retrospectively so it begins with the split and ends with the beginning. Carl has written a story set in a factory during the 80s about a pair of petty thieves.
BOOK OF SHEFFIELD
What do you it is about Sheffield that makes it a special setting for storytelling? I think because it’s a very urban city that is surrounded by this extraordinary countryside. I also see it as a city of two halves. I grew up in middle class Sheffield in Broomhill, but I was always aware there was another side to the city with all the highrise estates. It was a really divided city in that way. You can delve into Sheffield’s multi-layeredness, because it’s also a city of protest and resistance. Not just drawing on the more recent trees campaigns but also the miner’s strike. There’s just a huge amount of stuff going on here. I think it’s also a place with lots of history that you can really tap into. Désirée Reynolds has written a fascinating story about an African child that came to Sheffield in the 1900s with a troop of performers. The grave of the child can be found in the General Cemetery. It is based on a true story, but it’s just so unknown. What is so appealing about having multiple writers contributing to one book? I think because it really shows breadth. If you just write one story, it’s only going to be from one person’s perspective. Ten different writers provide ten different lookout points, looking down onto this city and expressing what it means to them. I think Comma thought a collection of short stories would represent all the different facets that make up a city today. I believe that you can’t really express that as well with factual writing or journalistic pieces – it has to come from the imagination. I think that’s what makes it relevant, not just to people living in Sheffield, but to people who just want to read a really good story. The Book of Sheffield is out now at commapress.co.uk

BEAT THE FROST 8 steps to keeping your car driveable in the cold snap...
1. 2.
Brush off loose snow Make sure to clear all the snow from your car to make sure that it doesn’t blow off behind you as you start driving, potentially blinding a following vehicle. Clear the openings Don’t forget to brush all the snow away from the door openings, unless you want snow to fall into the car when you open it. A softbristled brush will do the job if you don’t have the fancy gear.
3.
Whip out the de-icer If the ice is too thick or it’s too cold to be stood there scraping, apply a good blob of de-icer over the windows and lights and let the chemicals do the job.

4.
Clear the screen Keep scraping as often as necessary until all your windows are free of snow and ice. It’s dangerous to drive just using a small bit of your window and leaving the rest frosted up. Don’t forget to clear the door mirrors so you can see what’s behind you.
5.
No de-icer, no problem If you don’t have any de-icer to hand, then tepid water will do the trick in an emergency. You’ll just need to dry your windscreen to stop the water freezing again as you drive away. Don’t use hot or boiling water as it will crack the glass.
6.
Screenwash You could use neat screenwash if you’ve got some to hand. Try not to splash too much on the bodywork in case it stains.
7. 8.
De-icing the locks A squirt of alcohol-based hand cleansing gel on the key will do a pretty decent job of breaking through the ice, as will vodka or any other spirit. Don’t pour water inside the lock… De-icing the doors Spray de-icer around the door seal and pull gently. Keep spraying and pulling and the door should eventually open as the de-icer does its job.
Driving in snow Snow isn’t normally the issue when it comes to driving in the elements; it’s more difficult when the snow turns to ice after being driven on. Try not to follow in other driver’s tracks and the grip should be fine. In any case, you’ll need to use a higher gear than usual to minimise wheel spin. All your steering, throttle, and brakes should be as gentle as possible. Steady momentum will keep you mobile in situations where grip is at a premium.
