3) Do the Friends choose the Library’s programs? Library staff plan the programs and request funds from the Friends, who decide what programs they wish to sponsor. Of course, all Library patrons, including members of the Friends, can suggest programs.

5) The Bookshop has great bargains. How do you keep prices low? We keep the Shop’s prices low so we can serve the reading public better and move inventory more frequently. We are fortunate to have a high volume of book donations that can sometimes overwhelm our shelves. We bring in a steady stream of income from the Bookshop, which contributed significantly to the $30,000 we were able to give to the Library this year.

BENEFACTOR $1000

4) Should I donate to the Library, or to the Friends? Anyone wishing to make a charitable donation has three options for donating: directly to the Library, through the Friends, or to the Foundation. A donation to the Library will be publicly recognized, but may not be deductible. A donation to the chartered nonprofit Friends is fully tax deductible. A donation to the 501(c)3 Library Foundation is also tax deductible.

MEET THE BOARD MEMBERS At their August 18 meeting, the Library’s Board of Trustees voted in two new members: Abby Young (left) and Jami Xu (right).

What’s your favorite book, and why?

ABBY: Anne of Green Gables by L.M. Montgomery. When I was growing up, Anne was my idol, because she was a character of strength, intelligence, determination, and kindness. JAMI: Here are two from more recent reads: Quiet by Susan Cain—a well-researched book that really speaks to the introverted—and The Social Animal by David Brooks. He is so good at telling the uncomfortable truth in an entertaining way!

What’s something we may not know about you?

ABBY: I like to grow my own vegetables and have an ever-expanding garden in my backyard. JAMI: Although I am someone that’s terrible at directions, I used to work as a tour guide in Beijing.

What are you most looking forward to as a library trustee?

ABBY: I am most looking forward to working with the energetic and welcoming Library Board and Staff. JAMI: I most look forward to working with the wonderful library board members, library director and staff—they are so passionate and knowledgeable. There is so much to learn!
