MEET THE STAFF

Meet Reader Services librarians Mike Hominick and Tracy Gossage, who were recently awarded the Illinois Library Association's Readers Advisory Service Award!

What's your favorite book to recommend?

TRACY: Y: The Last Man by Brian K. Vaughan. If someone is looking for post-apocalyptic fiction and willing to try a graphic novel it's my go to. MIKE: Because it is such a compelling and poignant novel, I like to recommend Heft by Liz Moore. It's about a former academic who has become a recluse before his life takes a drastic turn.

What's something we may not know about you?

TRACY: I'm a huge fan of horror films, and I've probably seen the first Scream movie over 15 times. MIKE: I'm a big fan of the Chicago Cubs and attend several games a year. I've even traveled to see them at over twelve different ballparks.

What do you enjoy about the Northbrook Public Library? TRACY: I love how supportive of the library the community is, and I especially enjoy getting to know the regulars who attend our book discussions and TEDx programs. MIKE: It's the fact that everyone, the board, the staff, and the patrons, really love this library and together they make it a vibrant and welcoming place in the community.

NEWS OF THE FRIENDS

of the Northbrook Public Library name address

Now that the political conventions are happily just a memory, baseball is winding down and football is starting up, it's time for some of us to consider a more important life event: renewing our Friends membership--or perhaps joining for the first time. In September, reminders will be mailed to elapsing memberships with hopes of a vigorous and enthusiastic response. Members' dues help fund about a hundred library programs each year, programs of high quality and impressive attendance. Please renew (or join) to ensure the continued success of these presentations.

BENEFACTOR $1000

As mentioned previously, the Friends Bookshop now serves as a clearing house for all used book donations. We sort, store, stock for sale and, when necessary, discard our inventory. Recently, we were happy to deliver sixteen large boxes of books to Catholic Charities of Chicago. Serving a large, aging community, they were very grateful for the large print volumes and also for many Young Adult editions, which they would employ to encourage teenagers to read and to avoid dangerous street situations. We consider this type of "regifting" most appropriate. We also find it heartwarming.
