THE ENGLISH LANGUAGE INSTITUTE (ELI) is a year-round intensive English program for ESL students at North Central, a four-year university that was founded in 1861. North Central’s beautiful campus is located in a quiet residential neighborhood just a two-minute walk from downtown Naperville, a safe and friendly city of about 150,000. The university is also within walking distance of the train station where trains leave every hour to and from Chicago.

Our mission at the English Language Institute (ELI) is to help students improve their academic and professional English skills quickly, through dynamic and interactive intensive instruction. We serve students from beginning to advanced levels of English language proficiency, and our classes are small and tailored to meet student needs. Full-time and part-time study options are available.

High-Quality Programming • Classes include Reading & Vocabulary, Writing & Grammar, Listening & Speaking, and elective classes in Culture, Test Preparation, and Study Skills • 20 hours of instruction per week with lab and tutoring opportunities • Small classes with students from all over the world • Professional ESL instructors with international teaching experience • Access to all university facilities (library, fitness center, language resource center)

Pathway to Undergraduate Courses We offer conditional admission to students who meet all admission requirements except English language proficiency. Conditionally admitted students may start their undergraduate degree while in the ELI and can earn up to eight credits toward their undergraduate degree. Generous annual undergraduate scholarships are awarded to 95% of admitted international students.

Student Life The ELI helps students learn English by connecting them to activities and events, both on campus and locally. Popular programs include the Friendship Family Program, International Club and the International Roommate Program. Students have the opportunity to attend many events every term. ELI students live with undergraduate students in residence halls and have full access to all services and facilities.

Application Checklist Eight weeks before the start of the term, ELI applicants must submit: Completed and signed application form with $100 (USD) application fee Copy of passport identification page Proof of financial support (for F-1 visa students) Optional documents: English Proficiency Documentation, high school/university transcripts/diploma Additional admission documents required for transfer students and U.S. permanent residents.
