NORTH CENTRAL COLLEGE One of the most iconic objects in the world of theatre is the ghost light. It is left on when theatres and concert halls are not in use. Superstitions dating back to the late 1800s claim ghost lights were used to ward off spirits of past performers. A less dramatic but more practical purpose for these lights is safety. Ghost lights enable one to navigate a performance venue and avoid accidents such as falling into the orchestra pit or tripping over set pieces. This year the ghost light made a comeback. Many theaters forced to close during the COVID-19 pandemic have renewed the tradition of ghost lights as a way of indicating the theaters will re-open. The seats may be empty, but North Central has its ghost lights burning brightly on the stages of Wentz Concert Hall, Madden Theatre, Meiley-Swallow Hall and Pfeiffer Hall. These lights will stay on until we can safely open once again.
During this intermission, the College is still devoted to presenting outstanding artists to our community. Even though we are unable to offer live performances at this time, we are bringing the arts straight to you for a virtual season that can be enjoyed from the comfort of your homes—with the dress code and refreshments of your choosing! We are excited to kick off our first virtual season and hope you will join us for these extraordinary performances. We look forward to a time when we can come together to celebrate in person, but until then, stay safe, be well and know that we are all united in spirit through our love of the arts. Sincerely,
Jennifer Berosek Coordinator of Fine Arts Ghost light burning bright in the world-class Wentz Concert Hall.
