YOUR PERSONAL BEST. Mechanical engineering student REID CLARK credits the confidence heʼs gained to the close-knit community and faculty support North Central fosters. “I can go up to pretty much any professor who’s in the engineering program and theyʼll know who I am, theyʼll know my background, and Iʼll be able to have a conversation with them. If Iʼm stuck on something, say a piece of high-tech equipment, everyone is willing to get hands-on to help.”

At North Central, youʼll do more than learn, have fun, and make new friends—youʼll find new possibilities for your life. Youʼll develop the communication, problem-solving and critical thinking skills that youʼll need to master any opportunity or situation. And youʼll boost your confidence by working in state-of-the-art facilities, alongside faculty who know you by name and are committed to your success. Our collaborative community is active, connected and diverse—and thereʼs one thing we all agree on:

Cardinals Rule!

“North Central is definitely challenging. But in classes that are more complicated, I can go directly to my professor and they will make the time to explain things, give examples and walk me through how to solve problems,” says fellow engineering student JUAN SAMANIEGO. “It changes you for the better. Thatʼs what makes North Central really special.”

DR. KELLEY

“I have a very active undergraduate student research program,” says Dr. Karl Kelley, psychology professor. “Iʼve presented research with my students around the country, and even internationally in Dublin and Athens. For me, creating new knowledge and sharing it with others is inspirational.” Psychology major Bri McAloon works as a preceptor in Dr. Kelleyʼs classes, assisting with course research and holding tutoring sessions for students. “Itʼs amazing to have Dr. Kelley as a mentor,” she says. “Itʼs great to have somebody close to you who sees you, and notices the effort youʼre putting in.” When Bri started her psychology degree at North Central, she was planning to pursue clinical work, but she wanted to explore lots of topics. “My approach was to try everything.”

As she took different subjects and chatted with her professors, she discovered her passion for organizational and industrial psychology. Bri shifted gears, and she and Dr. Kelley spent a summer working together on an organizational psychology research project. “The thing thatʼs beautiful about North Central is that there are always people here to help. Thereʼs always support to guide you along the way.” Dr. Kelley agrees. “If you reach out, youʼre going to find people who want to work with you,” he says. “I tell all of my students to think of college as a verb. If you think about college as something that you do, rather than something that is done unto you—it changes your perspective.”

THE SU PPO RT TO EXCEED YOUR PERSONAL BEST. At North Central, our faculty always gives 100% (of their attention, that is). Our industry experts are at your disposal, in and outside of class, as well as after hours. Thatʼs because our faculty are more than leaders in their respective fields—they love to teach, offering both practical experience and real-world perspective. In fact, students even travel with faculty abroad, because as youʼll learn, while education begins in the classroom, it is by no means confined to it. No matter your program of study, youʼll build confidence, expand your understanding and push past what you thought was possible.

At North Central, our faculty expect the best from their students, and then help them exceed it. Dr. Esen Andic-Mortan, an assistant professor of management, says her favorite thing about teaching at North Central is the small classes, and the sense of community they foster. “Every student is here for different reasons. I have students from very different majors in my classes, from philosophy to accounting, and Iʼm able to tailor that experience to them.” Dr. Esen Andic-Mortan teaches classes in business analytics, management and sustainability. “When Iʼm teaching, Iʼm inspired by curiosity—both mine and my studentsʼ. When you are genuinely curious about something, nothing can stand in your way.”

“Everything at North Central, inside and outside the classroom, has given me the opportunity to grow as a leader. Iʼve been able to make a difference, be the change and advocate for other people.” BRY WALKER

DOING THE THINGS Making connections and meeting new people comes naturally at North Central, thanks to the many academic, social and work opportunities available to students starting from their first year. In fact, some students try their hand at all of the above, filling up their calendars with social and community events and activities. One such student is political science major Bry Walker. “I like to do all the things,” she laughs. “You can do it all if you have a good planner.” Bry is part of the Black Student Association and the North Central womenʼs lacrosse team, and is an orientation leader and first-year mentor. “Everything at North Central, inside and outside the classroom, has given me the opportunity to grow as a leader. Iʼve been able to make a difference, be the change and advocate for other people.” Bryʼs first introduction to North Central was on an overnight trip with North Central students where they volunteered on campus with Feed The Need, a volunteer program that provides food for children in need (pictured left).

“It was so cool to do that volunteer experience with people who could potentially be my teammates. I just felt that from the very beginning, and that made me feel so welcomed and included.” Bry was drawn to political science because of its explorative nature. “What we mostly find out in political science is that answering questions leads to asking more questions,” she explains. “North Central is a great place for me to be able to ask and answer questions.” Bryʼs experience has allowed her to set big goals for her post-college career. “I want to be governor. I love promoting political efficacy and teaching what I know to more people. North Central has helped me to understand my voice as a black woman in the world, to find my value and to be seen and heard.”

STUDENT CLUBS

Ready to get involved? Weʼve got you covered, with 75+ student clubs ranging from a cappella to kayaking and eSports. We have everything youʼd expect from your college experience, and maybe even a few things you didnʼt know you wanted! From our much-anticipated Springfest to casino night and regular food truck rallies, thereʼs something for everyone. And with numerous events and activities seemingly happening all of the time, thereʼs every opportunity to learn something new, make connections and put your education into practice. Who knows—you may even find yourself chasing your curiosity with friends and faculty in Guatemala, like Justin Simbol!

North Central offers a huge variety of extracurricular activities and clubs, from Naperville, to Chicago and beyond. One such club is Enactus, where students come together to work on big ideas focused on making a better, more sustainable world. “Enactus opened my eyes to social justice and environmental sustainability,” says student Justin Simbol. “I got to travel to loads of places. It really broke me out of my shell.” Justin learned about the program through his business and economics studies. “I started my freshman year working on a project sourcing socially conscious direct-trade coffee from Guatemala. I was able to travel there and meet directly with the farmers and learn their stories, and we turned that experience into a coffee company and lab right here on campus. What we do in Guatemala is amazing. Itʼs great to travel down there and see the change weʼre making.”

THE COFFEE LAB is the first of its kind in the United States, where students can get hands-on training in the coffee business.

Ready to learn like a pro? Our HUMAN PERFORMANCE LAB gives students the chance to work with the same equipment thatʼs used in physical and occupational therapy settings, to evaluate clinical patients and professional athletes alike.

THE CLASSRO Sydney Stacy transferred to North Central to complete her degree in kinesiology and exercise science, and graduated with an enhanced skill set and elevated confidence. “In the Human Performance Lab I learned how to use an ergometer and equipment for measuring anaerobic capacity, in addition to learning how to evaluate and assess individuals.” Prepared by her undergraduate experience, she just completed her master of occupational therapy at North Central and works at RC Training & Fitness as a strength coach. “The program at North Central really gave me a foundation so that I had the confidence to do that successfully.”

OOM

At North Central, we know that the best way to become an expert in your field is to dive right in. Yes, we have the standard whiteboards and desks—but youʼll also enjoy the very best resources and real-world equipment to help you pursue your interests, whether youʼre producing radio broadcasts at our college station WONC-FM 89.1, watching the stock market in action in our Bloomberg Finance Lab or building complex circuitry in our Molex Advanced Electronics Lab. Our students work on research that inspires them, like conserving marine ecosystems in the Bahamas, measuring the effect of music on stress levels and resilience and investigating what makes food taste and smell the way it does. Whatever your interests, youʼll find a learning experience thatʼs as unique, dynamic and inspired as you are at North Central.

TEAMWORK

ON AND OFF THE FIELD.

Alexa

Ben

Cardinals enjoy countless opportunities to expand their knowledge and discover their passions through hands-on and collaborative projects— often making lifelong friendships in the process. Neuroscience students Alexa Zimbelman and Ben Wong met while conducting research in North Centralʼs neuroscience lab. “Coming into the lab, Dr. Michael Stefanik [assistant professor of psychology and neuroscience] paired Alexa and I to be student leaders, and now weʼre good friends” says Ben. “It was really an amazing experience for me to work with Ben,” Alexa says. “He constantly pushes me to be better and ask great questions, and just to work together in the research environment was great.” As high school seniors, neither Alexa nor Ben knew exactly what they wanted to study in college, but they were both drawn to North Central for its athletics programs; Alexa for volleyball and Ben for football. “We just won the national championship,” says Ben.

The teamwork and camaraderie theyʼre accustomed to as players has been echoed in their classroom experiences. “Ben and I are both athletes, so teamwork is an analogy that comes naturally to us,” says Alexa, “but it really does feel like a team in the science center. If someone doesnʼt get it, we will sit at the whiteboard until you do get it. Itʼs been amazing for my education.” Thanks to the support and guidance theyʼve received from their professors, both Alexa and Ben now have a clear idea of what the future holds. Alexa is even considering following in their footsteps: “The growth that Iʼve experienced at North Central has been huge, and thatʼs really a product of the academic rigor— my professors constantly pushing me to be better and providing experiences I never would have considered before. Something that really interests me is becoming a professor at a college like North Central and starting a lab, like Iʼve seen my own professors do.”

Ben sees himself using his medical expertise to help his community. “Dr. Stefanik is a complete blessing in my life. He sends me emails about opportunities and holds me accountable, and thatʼs shaped me so much. What the liberal arts portion of my education has given me is that I aspire to be more than just a physician. I want to be an advocate for my community. I want to be a positive role model.”

GET TO KNOW OUR COVE R STUD ENT! FRANCIS ESPEDIDO is studying health science and psychology at North Central. The first in her family to go to college in America, she is part of North Centralʼs “Health First” program for first-generation students studying health care. “What really made me want to go to North Central was my tour experience—everyone was so friendly. I felt so supported and welcomed.” Although sheʼs approaching graduation, Francis can still remember what it felt like to be at the start of her college journey. “Thinking about college is a scary process, but I think the best advice I can give is just to stay curious. Dip your feet in and figure out what you like and what you donʼt like. At North Central youʼre never alone— you are always supported, and if you take advantage of the resources that are handed to you, you can open the door to so many opportunities.”
