MCCAIN

Saturday, November 12 at 8 p.m. Wentz Concert Hall EDWIN

BIOGRAPHY

Called the “great American romantic” by the New York Times, Edwin McCain has built an enviable career over the past 20 years by balancing his massive pop success with the year-round touring schedule of a tireless troubadour. His hit songs, authentic spirit and surprisingly affable sense of humor keep fans coming back time and time again for nights that feel more like parties with old friends than rock concerts. After recording two of the biggest love songs in the history of pop music and experiencing the success that comes with a television show on Animal Planet “Flipping Ships,” McCain now performs upwards of 100 shows annually throughout the U.S. as a solo artist, with his full band or his acoustic trio. Recently, he’s added orchestras to his repertoire, performing with symphonies in select markets where he brings his powerful songs to majestic new heights. “The 15-year-old me would have crawled through a river of fire to be the 48-year-old singer/songwriter that I am today, and I remember that. I am incredibly grateful to be able to do this,” McCain said. Those enduring love songs (and wedding must-haves) “I’ll Be” and “I Could Not Ask For More” aren’t just for the romantic at heart; “American Idol” and “The Voice” contestants turn to McCain’s ballads every single year to help them win over judges and fans alike (just ask last season’s Idol winner, Nick Fradiani). Even Justin Bieber has been known to belt out “I’ll Be” during his own concerts. 2018 marked the 20th year of the success of “I’ll Be,” which topped the Billboard charts in 1998 and has proven to be a timeless classic over the past two decades.

Saturday,
Pfeiffer Hall DARLENE LOVE

BIOGRAPHY

Rolling Stone Magazine has proclaimed Darlene Love to be “one of the greatest singers of all time” and that certainly rings true, but perhaps Paul Shaffer says it even more concisely: “Darlene Love is rock n’ roll!” –which was made official when she was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame by Bette Midler, a great fan of her work, in 2011. Through the years, Darlene Love continues to captivate audiences worldwide with her warm, gracious stage presence and superb performances.

At the Academy Awards, Darlene sang her powerful acceptance speech on behalf of all of the performers in the winning film “Twenty Feet From Stardom.” As she raised the Oscar, the entire house stood with a cheering ovation, led by the wildly applauding Bill Murray. It was another special moment in a great career. A Grammy Award soon followed for the soundtrack of the film.

Since the early sixties, Darlene has appeared on numerous television programs and on Broadway, running the gamut from her weekly appearances on “Shindig” to a recent guest spot on the PBS special entitled “Women Who Rock.” An autobiographical film is currently on the drawing board with a development deal from Oprah Winfrey based on the book “My Name is Love,” written by Darlene.

Her Billboard hits include: “He’s A Rebel,” “The Boy I’m Gonna Marry,” “Wait ‘Til My Bobby Gets Home,” “He’s Sure the Boy I Love” and the #1 holiday classic “Christmas Baby Please Come Home,” a song that she performed annually with Paul Shaffer and the CBS Symphony Orchestra on “The Late Show with David Letterman” for some 29 years before David retired.

To continue this long-standing tradition, Darlene performs a number of special Christmas shows every year and continues to enchant her fans with Christmas spirit.

BRASS ENSEMBLE

BIOGRAPHY

Formed in 2007 by Norwegian trumpeter Tine Thing Helseth as a fun and exciting collaboration between musical friends, the ten-piece, all-female brass ensemble tenThing have firmly established themselves on the international scene to great acclaim. tenThing are celebrated for their commitment to outreach and access to music through a diverse repertoire that spans from Mozart to Weill, Grieg to Bernstein, and Lully to Bartok. The group work closely with Norwegian guitarist and arranger Jarle Storløkken in the arrangement of scores for the ensemble, enabling them to play pieces of differing instrumentations.

tenThing first established themselves in performances all over their native Norway, eventually delighting a huge national audience by opening the 2011 Norwegian Grammy Awards. Soon after, the group came to international prominence at the BBC Proms in a performance at London’s Cadogan Hall. Elsewhere in Europe, they have performed at a wide range of prestigious festivals and concert halls, including the Schleswig-Holstein, Beethoven Bonn, Gstaad, MDR Musiksommer, Mecklenburg-Vorpommern, Rheingau, Bodensee, Engadin, Merano, Thüringer Bachwochen, and Bremen festivals in Central Europe, the Merano and Sienna festivals in Italy, the NCPA Beijing May Festival, and Moscow’s House of Music.

In spring 2017, the ensemble embarked on their American debut tour, which included concerts in New York, Philadelphia, Minneapolis, and at the renowned Wolftrap Festival. tenThing also made their Paris debut at the St. Denis Festival in May 2017. Following their international successes, they returned to the U.S. again in 2019 and are now on their third visit, performing a holiday-themed program of Christmas songs from all over Europe and America. Upcoming seasons will also see tenThing back on tour in Germany, Asia and across Europe.

Thursday, December 15 at 8 p.m., Pfeiffer Hall TED VIGIL: JOHN DENVER TRIBUTE

BIOGRAPHY

Ted Vigil is a singer, songwriter and a tribute artist. He was born in Seattle and raised in the Olympia, Wash., area. He has been performing from the age of 10 throughout school in concert, symphonic and jazz bands developing his talents as a drummer and singer. In 2006, he went on to Laughlin, Nev., to compete in the Talent Quest 2006 against competition from 28 states, New Zealand, Australia and Canada, taking first place. He then went on to win Komo TV 4’s “NW Afternoon Celebrity Look Alike” contest and has played twice for John Denver’s own “Windstar Foundation” in Aspen, Colo. Vigil cruised the Caribbean with Darryl Worley and Jimmy Wayne on a Travelin’ Inc. country cruise hosted by Great American Country’s own Storme Warren. In 2012, Vigil was awarded the Rising Legend Award by the National Traditional Country Music Association. Vigil also performed with the late Steve Wiesberg, John Denver’s lead guitar player from 2010 to 2014, who is quoted as saying “Apparently the audience thinks they all look and sound like John. I don’t see it. I see it with Ted. A very strong physical resemblance ... Uncanny!” In 2016, Vigil was part of the Kings of Country Tour in Australia starring Johnny Cash, Willie Nelson and John Denver tribute artists touring 20 cities from coast to coast. Vigil now performs internationally for all kinds of venues and events. He has wowed the crowd selling out theaters all over the U.S.
