On August 6, pet owners can catch a wave with their furry friends at the Imperial Beach Surf Dog Competition. This fun-filled day features daring dogs who jump onto their boards, paddle out, and entertain spectators with their surfing skills. The event is held near Imperial Beach Pier.

The first competition took place in Imperial Beach in 2006, and the Surf Dog series has since expanded to include contests in Huntington Beach as well. For dogs and owners that prefer to stay on dry land, there is an expo, dog rescues, and plenty of cool surFUR swag. For more information, visit www.surfdogevents.com.

69th Annual World Championship Over-The-Line Tournament

July 9-10 and 16-17

For the 69th year, Old Mission Beach Athletic Club brings the Over-The-Line (OTL) Tournament to Mission Bay’s Fiesta Island Park. The tournament attracts an international crowd of participants and spectators each year. It takes place over two weekends from July 9 to 10 and July 16 to 17. Games begin promptly at 7:30am and continue until dark.

Over-The-Line participants compete in a softball-like bat and ball sport. Three-player teams are encouraged to create unique and unusual names for their teams and many participate while wearing wild costumes. The court is made of a rope triangle in the sand. Hits are made when a ball is hit into fair territory on the fly without being caught by fielders, when any ball is touched and dropped by fielders, or when fielders cross “the line” or any of its extensions when attempting to catch a ball. Three hits in an inning scores one run, while each additional hit in that same inning scores one more run, and a home run “clears the bases.” On the first weekend of play, teams compete in three-inning games. On the second weekend of play, teams participate in four-inning games.

The Over-The-Line Tournament is a free public event and while there are no age restrictions, it is recommended that attendees are 18 years old or older. There are several stands to purchase hot food and cold non-alcoholic drinks. Parking is available adjacent to the playing area and at the northeast corner of Sea World Drive and Pacific Highway. Free shuttle buses are provided for convenience. Fiesta Island Park is located at 1590 East Mission Bay Drive, San Diego. For more information, visit www. ombac.org/over-the-line.

Beach Bocce World Championship

September 17

Each year, the annual Beach Bocce World Championship attracts more than 450 two-person teams that compete for the title of World Champion in four divisions. It has previously been held at Del Mar’s Dog Beach, but this year’s tournament is at a brand-new location on Mariner’s Point in Mission Bay. For more information, call (760) 444-4893 or visit www.beachbocce.com.

San Diego Surf Cup Soccer Championship

July 22-25 and July 30-August 1

Top youth soccer teams from all over the nation, thousands of spectators, and more than 500 college coaches and scouts convene for the San Diego Surf Cup. The Class I Tournament is open to USYSA, US Club Soccer, Super Y League and FIFA affiliated teams.

The first weekend of play is from July 22 to 25. It is known as the Olders Weekend because the players were born between 2004 and 2008. The Olders Weekend is presented in a hybrid format that combines both the showcase and tournament. The second tournament weekend, from July 30 to August 1, is for players born between 2009 and 2015. It features a straight tournament format with three games guaranteed. For each division, girls’ games are played at Surf Cup Sports Park in Del Mar, and boys’ games are played at SoCal Sports Complex in Oceanside. All semifinals and finals take place at Surf Cup Sports Park on July 25 (for Olders) and August 1 (for Youngers). SoCal Sports Complex is located at 3300 El Corazon Drive, Oceanside. Surf Cup Sports Park is located at 4989 Via De La Valle, Del Mar. For more information, visit www.surfcup.com.

45th Annual World Bodysurfing Championships

August 21-22

More than 350 bodysurfers from around the world will gather at Oceanside Pier on August 21 and 22 for the World Bodysurfing Championships. The championships have been around for 45 years. They feature competition in various age divisions. Preliminaries for all age divisions are held on Saturday, August 21, with a projected start time of 6:30am. Semi-finals and finals take place on Sunday, August 22, with Men’s and Women’s Grand Champions being crowned in the afternoon.

For those unfamiliar with the sport of bodysurfing, bodysurfers ride waves without the assistance of any buoyant device, such as a surfboard or body board. They equip themselves only with a pair of specialized swim fins that help to optimize propulsion so it’s easier to catch large and fast breaking waves. World Bodysurfing Championship event organizers reserve the right to change the projected schedule for various weather, surf conditions, and quantity of competitors.

Poway Rodeo

September 23-24

After a two-year hiatus, the Poway Rodeo returns to Poway Valley Riders Association Arena this fall. As a PRCA-sanctioned event, the Poway Rodeo attracts topnotch cowboys looking to qualify for the National Finals Rodeo in December. Performances take place at 7:30pm on September 23 and at 1pm and 7:30pm on September 24. Each performance kicks off with a rendition of the National Anthem, sung by the winners of Poway’s So You Think You Can Sing contest. The rodeo competition includes bronc and bareback riding, team and tie-down roping, steer wrestling, mutton busting, barrel racing, bull riding, and a drill team.

Sam’s Posse Exceptional Rodeo is back again this year at 10am on September 24, before the Saturday afternoon performance. The mission of Sam’s Posse is to enrich the lives of children living with intellectual and physical disabilities by supporting their needs and wishes. During the exceptional rodeo, each child is paired with a buddy to help them navigate through events such as stick pony barrel racing and pole bending, “not so rough stock” riding, and roping. The event includes interactions with rodeo queens and princesses, professional rodeo cowboys and cowgirls, and therapy horses.

After each evening rodeo performance, spectators can come out for a good time at the Rodeo Jam dance party. Live music is performed by southern California country musicians, Patrick Howard Trampus Band. The dance is for ages 21 and older. There is no cover charge.

Tickets range from $16 to $90 per person. Children 5 and under are free. General admission includes bleacher seating, with no assigned seats, so it is recommended to arrive early. VIP and shaded seating is also available. Poway Valley Riders Association Arena is located at 14336 Tierra Bonita Road, Poway. For more information, visit www.powayrodeo.com.
