ABOUT THE NORTHEAST-10 CONFERENCE
The Northeast-10 Conference is an NCAA Division II conference that was established in 1979. The conference consists of 15 member institutions located throughout the Northeast in the states of Connecticut, Massachusetts, New Hampshire, New York and Vermont. The institutions that make up the Northeast-10 are Adelphi University (Garden City, N.Y.), American International College (Springfield, Mass.), Assumption College (Worcester, Mass.), Bentley University (Waltham, Mass.), Franklin Pierce University (Rindge, N.H.), Le Moyne College (Syracuse, N.Y.), Merrimack College (North Andover, Mass.), University of New Haven (West Haven, Conn.), Pace University (Pleasantville, N.Y.), Saint Anselm College (Manchester, N.H.), Saint Michael’s College (Colchester, Vt.), The College of Saint Rose (Albany, N.Y.), Southern Connecticut State University (New Haven, Conn.), Southern New Hampshire University (Manchester, N.H.), and Stonehill College (Easton, Mass.). The conference’s 15 member institutions are spread geographically from Syracuse, N.Y. to Waltham, Mass. and from Colchester, Vt. to Garden City, N.Y. Many of the members are located in or around the metropolitan areas of Albany, Boston, Manchester, New Haven, Worcester, and New York City. The Northeast-10 was proud to welcome the New Haven and Adelphi in the conference’s latest expansion, adding to the powerful union of strong academic and athletic institutions. The Northeast-10 has evolved into a membership committed to competitive athletics programs that emphasize the education, both on and off the field, of more than 6,000 student athletes. Among the many accomplishments of these institutions are NCAA Division II national championships in women’s basketball, women’s cross country, field hockey, men’s lacrosse, women’s lacrosse, men’s soccer, women’s soccer, women’s track and field, and men’s and women’s swimming and diving. Le Moyne claimed the 2013 NCAA Division II Men’s Lacrosse Championship last May with an 11-10 victory over Mercyhurst in Philadelphia.
The conference is coming off a successful 2012-13 season, as the Le Moyne men’s lacrosse team won the Division II national championship with an 11-10 over Mercyhurst at Lincoln Financial Field in Philadelphia, Pa. The UMass Lowell field hockey team, now departed for Division I along with the rest of the school’s varsity programs, advanced to the national title game in December 2012. The Adelphi women’s lacrosse, Merrimack field hockey and Saint Rose women’s soccer teams were all national semifinalists. Four Northeast-10 programs also made the national quarterfinals in 2012-13: Franklin Pierce baseball and men’s basketball, New Haven volleyball and So. New Hampshire men’s soccer. Individually, Southern Connecticut’s Amanda Thomas (pictured, right) won the national title in the 200 IM at the 2013 NCAA Swimming & Diving Championships. The win was her third in the event in as many years, as she graduated a four-time national champion and was twice named Swimmer of the Meet at the NCAA Championships. In all, 50 different Northeast-10 teams representing 15 conference institutions were selected to participate in an NCAA Championship during the 2012-13 academic year. Including cross country, swimming & diving and track & field appearances in NCAA Championships, a total of 80 Northeast-10 teams were national qualifiers. From the field of play to inside the classroom, the Northeast-10 honored a number of student-athletes for their academic accomplishments. Over 50 percent of all conference student-athletes earned a 3.0 GPA throughout the 2012-13 academic year and were named to the Commissioner’s Honor Roll as a result. An astounding 138 student-athletes earned a perfect 4.0 GPA in the fall before 184 reached the benchmark in the spring. The Northeast-10 also honored 247 student-athletes as members of its academic all-conference teams.
Southern Connecticut’s Amanda Thomas was named the 2013 NCAA Championship Swimmer of the Meet.
The Northeast-10 also remains focused on its community endeavors, as its fundraising donations for Make-A-Wish is more than any other Division II conference in the country the past decade. The conference also announced a formal partnership last fall with Team IMPACT, a non-profit organization that matches children with life-threatening illnesses with college sports teams. Currently, more than 35 Northeast-10 programs are currently matched with a Team IMPACT teammate. Through the establishment and enforcement of regulations, the conference aims to encourage policies that enable intercollegiate athletics programs to contribute to and be considered an integral part of the total educational offerings at our member institutions. The Northeast-10 can look to a long history of success including the growth from seven original member institutions to more than double its size 34 years later, the contention for and winning of multiple national championships, and the recognition of student-athlete performances off the field and in the classroom.
2013 Golf Championship Bretwood Golf Course Hosted by Franklin Pierce University About Bretwood Golf Course Courtesy of bretwoodgolf.com
Our lush, superbly maintained 36 holes play along the picturesque Ashuelot River, which lazily meanders its way through the two courses. Four sets of tees, large Penncross bentgrass greens protected by strategic bunkering and mounds, generous and gently rolling fairways, many elevation changes, lots of water and the ever-present wind combine to make Bretwood a favorite of recreational and competitive golfers alike. “We take great pride in extending our invitation to you to play two of the finest, most challenging and best maintained public golf courses in the Northeast. Large and small groups are certainly always welcome.”

By Harry Kirkpatrick, Bentley Golf September 25, 2013 The fall golf season goes by extremely quickly. After just three short weeks, we will be playing in our conference championship at Bretwood in Keene, N.H. this upcoming wekeend. The rapid-fire pace of the golf season can cause some unpredictable results, as seen in Bentley’s first two events. After a 10th place finish in Central Connecticut’s Division 1 Tournament, we brought five different golfers to our second event at Lake Sunapee in N.H. with the idea of giving the entire team an opportunity to compete before the conference championship. We won. The feeling I had of going along as captain and playing as an individual was bittersweet. I was extremely proud of the guys who went out and played their hearts out to win the tournament, but disappointed I wasn’t a part of the victory. The interesting part of collegiate golf is the makeup of the starting lineup. In golf, instead of having a player sit on a team’s bench, a coach decides which player plays and which player stays home. Picking the right lineup isn’t exactly a science.
Our coach, Mickey Herron, picks the lineup based on experience, course knowledge, and recent results. We have a very difficult decision of who to bring to Bretwood with all 10 players deserving of a spot. However, I am confident that whichever lineup we field for the Northeast-10 Championship has the ability to make up for last year’s performance. I was a part of winning the conference championship two years ago for Bentley and it was the highlight of my college career so far. Playing well when you’re feeling the pressure is an amazing experience and I will always treasure the memory. Last year’s sour taste, though, still frustrates me. There are a lot of very good teams in the Northeast-10, but I have no doubts that we can accomplish great things when we are playing well. I cannot wait to get up to Bretwood this year. One of my best friends, Austin Ball from American International College, recently won the individual honors at the Northeast Challenge in Sunapee, N.H. I can’t wait to go out and battle against my buddy when we’re coming down to the finish. One thing is certain about the NE-10 Golf Championship: one team will go home knowing that its NCAA bid is secure. We are going to battle to make sure that we are that team.
Bentley Tops Northeast-10 Golf Championship Coaches’ Poll SOUTH EASTON, Mass. – Bentley University narrowly ousted Le Moyne College as the favorite for the upcoming 2013 Northeast-10 Conference Golf Championship, as voted upon in a poll by the league’s 10 head coaches. The two-day Northeast-10 Golf Championship tees off on Sunday, September 29 at Bretwood Golf Course in Keene, N.H. and concludes Monday afternoon. Hosted by Franklin Pierce University, the athletic department’s student-run Raven Sports Network plans to provide live audio coverage during both days of the championship. In the voting, Bentley received two first-place votes and 73 points overall, while Le Moyne finished second with 72 points despite a poll-leading five first-place tallies. Southern New Hampshire University finished third with 56 points, while reigning Northeast-10 Champion Adelphi University and American International College tied for fourth with 51 points. Adelphi also received two first-place votes.
Assumption College placed sixth in the poll with 43 points, followed by host Franklin Pierce with 40 points and one first-place vote. Saint Anselm College finished eighth with 37 points, with The College of Saint Rose and Saint Michael’s College rounding out the voting with 15 and 12 points, respectively.
