Assumption advanced to its first-ever Northeast-10 title game with a semifinal win over Merrimack on Thursday night.
WORCESTER, Mass. – Gibson, a Northeast-10 First Team All-Conference selection, shot 12-of-20 from the floor to lead the Greyhounds to victory Thursday night. Gibson’s performance helped hold off the surging Warriors (17-11), who had earned upset road victories over seventh-seeded Pace University and second-seeded Stonehill College in the 2013 Northeast-10 Championship before Thursday’s loss. Merrimack’s Kelly Schatzlein had a 17-point, 13-rebound double-double effort, while Chloe Rothman had a team-high 18 points off the bench. For Assumption, Jamie Insel totaled 13 points and 11 boards in the win, as the Greyhounds managed to capitalize on 24 Merrimack turnovers. Merrimack ended the first half on a 10-2 run to tie it at 33-33 at halftime, and actually owned a 64-62 with 4:21 to play. But Assumption ended the game on a 12-0 run, holding the Warriors to 0-of-7 shooting over the final 3:35 of regulation. -WALTHAM, MASS. – Jacqui Brugliera had a game-high 22 points, 16 of which came in the second half, to help key Bentley’s semifinal victory on Thursday. Teammate Lauren Battista had 13 points, 11 rebounds and four assists in the win, while Courtney Finn added nine points and nine boards. Franklin Pierce, which had defeated fourth-seeded University of Massachusetts Lowell on the road in the quarterfinals, was down by as many as nine in the first half before ending the stanza on a 14-5 run to tie it at 27-27 at the break. But the Falcons shot 56.7 percent in the second half, including 57.1 percent from three-point territory, to bury the Ravens, who shot just 33.3 percent for the game. Franklin Pierce (18-9) was led by rookie Kara Charette, who had 14 points and six rebounds, while Amanda Saab chipped in 13 points and six boards of her own. Brittany Martelle had 13 points and five rebounds off the bench.
