SWINBURNE UNIVERSITY OF TECHNOLOGY MELBOURNE, AUSTRALIA Swinburne University is Melbourne’s best university for teaching quality and graduate satisfaction.* Established in 1908, Swinburne has been educating students from all over the world for more than a century from our main campus in Hawthorn, just 10-15 minutes from Melbourne’s centre. Since the 1960s, our emphasis on real-world education has made Swinburne an industry leader in practical training. *Good Universities Guide 2010

Do you want more than a qualification? We believe the best way to learn is by doing. Our strong relationships with industry and business allow for unique access and learning opportunities. Industry-driven projects, case studies, excursions, teamwork, research projects, guest lecturers and project-based assignments mean that you develop resources and skills that bridge the gap between theory and practice.

How do we stand out from the crowd? Our influential links to industry, a solid technology base and ground-breaking specialist research centres keep Swinburne at the forefront of education. We have a flexible and forward-thinking understanding of international government, education and business priorities, and are responsive to the changing needs of industry. Is the world getting smaller? At Swinburne we are keenly aware that the workplace has gone global. Distance is less and less relevant to the way business is conducted. So it is essential that tomorrow’s employees are internationally savvy. Strong relationships with international universities, such as Northeastern, give us a genuine world view that is passed on to our students. We are also the only Australian university invited to be a member of the European Consortium of Innovative Universities (ECIU).

Key goals of ECIU include fostering student and staff mobility, and sharing innovative programs that give students a competitive edge in a global employment market. We give our students the opportunity to see possibilities, not boundaries.

Where are we?

Melbourne is a glorious mix of contrasts and influences, underpinned by intelligence and earnestness. Capital city of the state of Victoria and home to 3.8 million people, it is known as Australia’s cultural, culinary and sporting capital. A mild climate, affordable living costs, an extensive public transport network and an abundance of parkland and public space, set the scene for a great living experience.

Where do you fit in? Pretty much everywhere. When we ask our international students what they like most about Melbourne, they almost always say ‘the people’. Our long history of multiculturalism has created a community that is accepting and welcoming of new people and new experiences. Home to people from over 230 countries, speaking more than 180 languages, Melbourne is populated by numerous ethnic community centres and groups, which provide fantastic networks for newcomers.

What makes Melbourne? In the city centre you can wind your way through Melbourne’s many laneway shops, bars and cafés, or step onto one of the grand main streets and get caught up in the colourful bustle that is the CBD. Melbourne’s inner-urban villages are also destinations for shopping, eating and socialising and have their own distinct character and vibe.

St Kilda offers beaches, clubs, restaurants and the famous live music venue, the Esplanade Hotel – ‘the Espy’ to locals. Carlton has an Italian feel, with coffee shops, restaurants, bookshops and an arthouse cinema. Prahran is the place to find trendy fashion boutiques. The historic port of Williamstown can be reached by train or ferry from the city, and is a great place to eat, cycle or lie on the beach. Melbourne hosts a multitude of festivals, including the Melbourne International Film Festival, the International Arts Festival, Food and Wine Festival and more. The CBD’s Federation Square is home to the National Gallery of Victoria’s Australian collection plus the Australian Centre for the Moving Image (ACMI). Also within the city are the Immigration Museum, the Arts Centre and many other cultural and arts venues. Sport is also an essential piece of Melbourne. Birthplace of Australian Rules Football – commonly known as ‘footy’ – Melbourne’s passion for sport is famous. Throughout the year we host a variety of major sporting events including the Australian Tennis Open, the Spring Racing Carnival, featuring the Melbourne Cup horse race, and the F1 Grand Prix.

NORTHEASTERN UNIVERSITY BOSTON, UNITED STATES OF AMERICA Northeastern University is a private research university located in the heart of Boston. It is a leader in interdisciplinary research, urban engagement, and the integration of classroom learning with real-world experience. Northeastern’s signature co-operative education program, one of the largest and most innovative in the world, is ranked among the best in the nation by U.S. News & World Report.

Northeastern offers a comprehensive range of undergraduate and graduate programs leading from degrees through to doctorates in six undergraduate colleges, eight graduate schools, and two part-time divisions. Northeastern educates students for a life of fulfillment and accomplishment, while creating knowledge that meets global and societal needs. The University provides students with a transformative experience, grounded in experiential learning that ignites their passion for learning while opening up the endless possibilities around them. Students become engaged citizens of the world and confident and resourceful people who realise that their knowledge and action can have positive consequences for their own lives and for the lives of others.

The College of Professional Studies. Real experience. Real results. The Master of Science in Leadership is offered by Northeastern’s College of Professional Studies, a world-class leader and innovator in professional and non-traditional learning. The College’s faculty members are academic scholars and industry leaders with experience applying knowledge to the problems and issues of their professions.

How does our faculty make a difference? Many of Northeastern’s 1378 full- and part-time faculty members have garnered national and international acclaim for their achievements in teaching and research, with particular strength in interdisciplinary scholarship. Northeastern faculty members direct more than 37 research and education centres, highlighting the growing richness of our collaborative research environment. Northeastern is one of only three universities in the country with a National Science Foundation (NSF) Engineering Research Centre, an NSF Nanomanufacturing Centre, and two NSF Integrated Graduate Education and Research Traineeship programs. In fact, the Kaplan/Newsweek College Catalogue includes Northeastern University among a group of colleges and universities that offer the most individual academic attention.

Can a campus be traditional and eclectic? Northeastern offers the ultimate urban campus: the green spaces and tree-lined pathways of a traditional college campus combined with the energy and diversity of a university set in the heart of a vibrant city. Located between the Museum of Fine Arts and Symphony Hall on Boston’s Avenue of the Arts, the 73-acre main campus is a centre of dynamic intellectual, social, and cultural activity.

In short ° Northeastern’s degrees are grounded in experiential learning ° Faculty from Northeastern are both academic scholars and industry leaders ° Students enrolled in the Global Leadership Program will be part of Northeastern’s College of Professional Studies ° Northeastern is a private university and is rated among some of the best in America ° Northeastern has proud traditions including that of the beloved mascot, the Husky, which you will see all over the Northeastern campus. Students visit one statue in particular to rub the nose of the Husky for good luck

Where will your study take you?

In your own backyard

As a participant in the Global Leadership Program you will also have the option of applying to Northeastern to take part of your course on campus in Boston (you will need to apply for a US student visa). Boston is the ultimate college town. The city is a hub of cultural, educational and social activity, yet it’s small enough to navigate on foot.

Northeastern’s central location puts you close to all the city has to offer. Within walking distance are the world-renowned Museum of Fine Arts, Symphony Hall and stylish Newbury Street, with great shopping and dining. Our students can hop on the “T”, Boston’s subway, and shop at Quincy Market, eat in the North End, visit the Museum of Science, cheer on the Celtics and Bruins at the TD Banknorth Garden, or hang out in the funky squares of Cambridge, right across the Charles River.

More than 300,000 college students from around the country and the world call Boston home and the city is alive with their energy. Northeastern students add their own energy to the mix, and are inspired by the different cultures, ideas and experiences they encounter. High-achieving students with strong leadership potential have the opportunity to participate in the ‘Global Leadership in Boston’ program. This four-week program allows eligible students to complete the units Building Financial Relationships and The Ethical Leader at Northeastern University in Boston during the northern hemisphere summer as well as undertaking relevant industry visits in and around Boston.

Boston has been called the “Athens of America” for its wealth of educational and civic institutions. Northeastern students study right in the heart of this intellectual goldmine. Students often find the city’s cultural resources intertwined with their academic and social activities. No matter what their academic or personal interests, the riches of Boston play a part in the everyday life of Northeastern students.

Beyond Boston? For those students who like to get out of town and explore, the options are endless. Ski in Vermont, view colourful foliage and pick apples in Western Massachusetts and New Hampshire, dig for clams in Maine, tour mansions in Newport and bask on the beaches of Cape Cod. While the program is taught in Melbourne, Northeastern’s home is Boston, USA.

THE GLOBAL LEADERSHIP PROGRAM Leadership Stream All students in the Global Leadership Program complete the Leadership Stream. The Leadership Stream involves a total of eight units taught by Northeastern University academic staff. On successful completion of all eight leadership units and all specified units in either the International Business, Professional Accounting, Marketing or Biotechnology options, graduates are eligible for the Master of Science in Leadership from Northeastern University as well as the relevant partner master degree from Swinburne University of Technology. The traditional concept that leadership skill resides solely with a small handful of top executives has given way to contemporary collaborative models where influence and decision-making authority is distributed throughout an organisation.

Today’s workforce continues to diversify, and the tasks to be accomplished become more complex. This Leadership Stream is designed to assist today’s leaders and prepare emerging leaders in meeting these challenges.
