Letter from the President
During our 152-year history, Northeastern Illinois University has pursued a vision of higher education to transform and prepare our students to make positive, lasting impacts on our communities and world. This strong commitment to our students and communities is deeply rooted in our mission and values, which you will find evident within the pages of this year’s President’s Report. You will also see throughout this report that we have made strategic investments in our faculty and staff, our academic programming, and our student experiences that embrace the spirit of Northeastern. We also continue to proceed with confidence and purpose as the University advances two of my top priorities: access/opportunity and student success. Our commitment to excellence has been recognized as well. Northeastern ranks high on the lists of best colleges and universities in a number of categories, and the learning environment we provide our students is as vibrant as ever. Our 152-year-old story is one of both resilience and evolution. We’ve never stood still, and we’ll never stop getting better.
This drive to excel is motivated and strengthened by the richness of our University community. The students, staff, faculty, alumni, friends and donors who propel us toward success make up the heart of our institution, and I am forever grateful to all of you who so proudly support our cherished university. While this year’s President’s Report doubles as a look back at an eventful year, it also serves as a preview of what’s to come. Within the stories and reports you are about to read you will find the building blocks of a bright road ahead. I can’t wait to see what the future holds in store for us. Very best wishes,
Gloria J. Gibson, Ph.D. President, Northeastern Illinois University

Master of Public Health leads list of new offerings
Faculty receive teaching, research awards
Beginning in Fall 2019, Northeastern Illinois University began offering a Master of Public Health (M.P.H.). This 42-credit-hour degree program covers a broad range of public health issues and will be taught in a hybrid of on-campus and online courses. It is taught by a team of faculty members across disciplines to provide a unique, generalist approach to the field.
In October, Northeastern selected Professor of Women’s and Gender Studies Laurie Fuller as the 2018 recipient of the Audrey Reynolds Distinguished Teaching Award. Professor Emerita of Linguistics Audrey Reynolds established the award to be given annually to a tenured member of the Northeastern faculty who best demonstrates distinguished teaching.
The program is headed by Department of Health Sciences and Physical Education Chair James Ball and Associate Professor Jennifer Banas, who also serves as coordinator of the Community Health program.
In April, Professor of Psychology Ruth (Breckie) Church was honored with Northeastern’s 2019 Bernard J. Brommel Distinguished Research Professor award. The late Bernard J. Brommel, Professor Emeritus, established the award to be given annually to the tenured or tenure-track member of the Northeastern faculty who best demonstrates excellence in research and scholarship.
“As we learn more about social determinants of health and their impact on health-related quality of life," Banas said, "the preparation of a diverse group of public health professionals who are knowledgeable about these intersecting determinants is essential to improving health outcomes for populations more susceptible to health disparities and health inequities.” New certificate programs were also launched this year, including the Addiction Counseling Certificate and the Graduate Certificate in Public Health. Additionally, Northeastern revised its Master of Arts in Inner City Studies and has renamed it the Master of Arts in Urban Community Studies.
Three staff members receive 2019 Employee Excellence Awards Northeastern Illinois University established an excellence award program to acknowledge, honor and reward employees. Nominations were submitted by co-workers, faculty or self-nominations. Once submitted, all nominations were reviewed by the Employee Excellence Award Committee, which chose the awardees based on their contribution to student success; demonstration of overall excellence in work performance; deliverance of consistent and quality service; creative problem solving and initiatives; and commitment to fostering growth through leadership and teamwork. NORTHEASTERN ILLINOIS UNIVERSITY I 2019 PRESIDENT’S REPORT

No fear,
No limits With an entrepreneurial spirit, Alecia Martin has her sights set high. 10
NORTHEASTERN ILLINOIS UNIVERSITY I 2019 PRESIDENT’S REPORT
“I want to be the CEO of a company looking out of a glass window to the city,” Martin said. Don’t bet against her. A graduate of Homewood-Flossmoor High School in the south suburbs of Chicago, Martin transferred to Northeastern from Prairie State College after a counselor encouraged her to apply. A Management major and University Honors Program scholar, Martin graduated in Spring 2019. “I love the Northeastern community,” Martin said. “Everybody is so community-oriented. If you know somebody, you know somebody else. You know the dean’s name, the president’s name. I can say hello and have a conversation with the president herself. I love being able to build relationships with different people because they’re all so nice and kind. I can always talk to anyone if I need help.”
to find the strength and reserves within herself to meet and exceed the requirements of the challenge. She exemplifies some of the best of what Northeastern students have to offer.” Hageman became familiar with Martin when she applied for the Honors Program and Phi Theta Kappa scholarship for transfer students, which Hageman reviews. He was greatly impressed with her essays and believes her passion will take her far. “It’s almost like Alecia has no fear, and I mean that in the healthiest possible way,” Hageman said. “She’s the kind of person I would like to work with because she gets the job done, she does it well, and if she doesn’t have the tools right now, she’ll get them and she’ll be successful.” Michael Bedell, the dean of the College of Business and Management, suggested Martin’s research topic to Hageman, who presented the idea to all honors students as a possible thesis topic. Martin picked it up, and Hageman believes Martin’s research may allow her to present her academic work at conferences and potentially get published in a scholarly journal.
“It’s almost like Alecia has no fear, and I mean that in the healthiest possible way. She’s the kind of person I would like to work with because she gets the job done, she does it well, and if she doesn’t have the tools right now, she’ll get them and she’ll be successful.” Jon Hageman, Anthropology professor and coordinator of Northeastern’s Honors Program As a member of the Honors Program, Martin was required to complete a senior project that represented outstanding undergraduate achievement and the culmination of the Honors Scholar curriculum. Martin’s thesis focused on the College of Business and Management’s new project, the Business Innovation and Growth Center (BIG Center). Her thesis examined how incubators are formed, a topic that has received little scholarly attention. Martin’s grandmother, who was a consultant and marketing director, inspired her to become a businesswoman. She has ambitions of possibly starting her own business or working her way up the corporate ladder of an established company. It is her creative energy and drive to succeed that impressed Jon Hageman, an Anthropology professor and coordinator of Northeastern’s Honors Program.
Aside from taking courses, Martin spent time cultivating relationships with classmates and instructors. During the 2017-2018 school year, Martin was a resident assistant in The Nest residence hall. She was also an intern in the College of Business and Management, assisting with the BIG Center. Martin was a writing tutor for Northeastern’s Learning Success Center. She also served as president of Northeastern’s Collegiate Entrepreneurs’ Organization, which allowed her to take several trips to business conferences and network with other entrepreneurs. “I love this school, how it’s so innovative, how you can meet anybody and create relationships and hear their ideas and projects and stuff they do in class,” Martin said. “Just being able to be part of a community where everybody likes to help each other and wants to be involved, it’s just a great world I can be a part of.”
“Alecia is not afraid of a challenge,” Hageman said. “She may struggle initially, but she always works hard

PRIDE NEIU is known near and far for its excellence. But don’t take our word for it. Here’s how others are ranking us both locally and nationally.
Ranked #1 for Environment (Diversity) For the fourth year in a row, Northeastern Illinois University is ranked No. 1 in the category of Environment among all Midwest colleges and universities by The Wall Street Journal/Times Higher Education College Ranking. Nationally, Northeastern is tied for 19th. Environment is calculated using a mix of data on international students, student diversity, student inclusion and staff diversity. Northeastern has ranked in the top 25 nationally each of the past four years of this survey.
Ranked #1 for lowest student debt Northeastern Illinois University graduates its students with the least amount of student debt among Midwest regional universities, according to the 2020 edition of U.S. News & World Report’s annual “Best Colleges” publication. Among Midwest regional universities, the report also listed Northeastern as the No. 1 public university in its diverse student population ranking. This marks the sixth year in a row that Northeastern has earned the No. 1 spot for students who graduate with the least amount of debt among Midwest regional universities. Only 32 percent of Northeastern’s 2017 graduating class incurred debt, and those students borrowed a median of $15,000.
Ranked #1 for social mobility Northeastern was first among Midwest regional public universities from Illinois in the social mobility ranking, which demonstrates movement up the socioeconomic ladder. This is according to the 2020 edition of U.S. News & World Report’s annual “Best Colleges” publication. 12
NORTHEASTERN ILLINOIS UNIVERSITY I 2019 PRESIDENT’S REPORT
Ranked #1 for Most Secure Campus Northeastern Illinois University ranks seventh in the nation and first in Illinois in a new report on colleges and universities with the lowest rates of property crime and violence associated with property crime. The 100 Most Secure College Campuses 2019 report was released by ASecureLife.com, a company specializing in reviewing and researching the security industry. ASecureLife focused on public crime data from hundreds of four-year institutions spanning from 2007 through 2017. Northeastern’s ranking stems from the low amount of property crime on campus as well as the number of safety initiatives in place to protect students.
Ranked #1 for best college for adult learners Washington Monthly magazine named Northeastern Illinois University one of the nation’s Best Colleges for Adult Learners in its September/October 2019 issue. Northeastern ranked No. 1 in Illinois and 34th overall on the list of fouryear universities nationwide. According to the magazine, nearly one-third of all undergraduates in the United States are 25 or older. The average age of a Northeastern student in Fall 2018 was 28.
Ranked #2 for nation’s mostdiverse managerial staff The Chronicle of Higher Education ranked Northeastern second in the nation among four-year public institutions for diversity among managers. The magazine gave Northeastern the second-highest Diversity Index, which measures the probability that any two full-time managers at an institution were from different racial or ethnic groups.

NEIU Foundation Thank you, Northeastern friends and family, for making fiscal year 2019 one for the records! I have had the honor to serve as Foundation Board President since 2015, and this has been a standout in my years of service. We celebrated the arrival and first year of President Gibson, we reached a strong conclusion for the University’s inaugural campaign, Transforming Lives, and we have developed key partnerships across Chicago and the region for the benefit of the University. Not only did NEIU exceed the campaign goal by nearly $3 million, but the endowment has reached a new high of $13.5 million, an improvement of over $5.7 million since the beginning of the campaign. Members of the Foundation Board have been hard at work, bringing a sense of purpose and energy to broaden NEIU’s connections with people and organizations that share our values and understand our mission. Following the roadmap we set forth in the April 2018 Foundation strategic plan, the Board has worked to increase unrestricted support, expand the Student Travel Award, and establish annual support for the Student Emergency Fund. In addition, we have worked closely with President Gibson on key initiatives to improve student success.
Our students are driven to achieve, and Northeastern is well positioned to unlock their potential. Increased scholarship support through private dollars helps on this journey, giving students a sense of belonging, knowing that an entire community is behind them. The power of your generosity motivates us to do even more. On behalf of my fellow Foundation Board members, thank you for your continued investment in the students, faculty and staff of Northeastern Illinois University.

DACAmented and determined
The science of success isn’t an exact formula. Yet André Herrera Charpentier figured it out. After earning his bachelor’s degree in Psychology from Northeastern Illinois University in May 2019, Herrera Charpentier is now in a Ph.D. program in Behavioral Neuroscience on a full scholarship at Michigan State University. “I always wanted to do something with medicine, something with science,” said Herrera Charpentier, who minored in Biology and Chemistry at Northeastern. “I’ve had that in me since I was young.” That intrinsic drive—coupled with the supportive environment he found after transferring to Northeastern from Harold Washington College—has carried Herrera Charpentier to the doorstep of his academic dreams. The achievement is made all the more remarkable because Herrera Charpentier, a graduate of Lane Tech College Prep High School, is in the United States under the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) program that protects some immigrants brought to the U.S. as children from deportation. For Herrera Charpentier and other undocumented students, one of the biggest challenges in pursuing a college degree is lack of funding. Undocumented students are not eligible for federal or state financial aid. “There are some private scholarships out there, but not as many as other students get,” he said. To compensate, Herrera Charpentier took a job as a restaurant server and pursued other angles to enrich his college experience at Northeastern, including turning to Undocumented Student Resources Director Luvia Moreno. Herrera Charpentier wanted to attend a few academic conferences to share his research and learn more about the field, but he was not eligible for the usual financial assistance programs. “André was very involved in attending conferences and presenting,” Moreno said. “Because he doesn’t have the funds to pay for a hotel, airfare and conference registration, he reached out to me to ask, ‘How can I do this? Can the University help me in some way?’ We were able, thankfully, to use some of the undocumented student funds that we have to cover his expenses to present his research with a faculty member.” By attending those conferences and meeting other professionals in his field, Herrera Charpentier was able to learn about the opportunity at Michigan State. 16
“I’m very proud,” Psychology Professor Maureen Erber said. “I always had a sense he was destined to go far.” Erber noted that Herrera Charpentier’s determination, hard work and kindness as a student made him an ideal candidate for Northeastern’s MARC (Maximizing Access to Research Careers) U-STAR Program that is designed to support undergraduate students who are underrepresented in the biomedical and behavioral science fields. Since the program is federally funded, Herrera Charpentier could participate in the programming but was not eligible for the financial benefits the program offers other members. Still, he applied himself and made significant contributions to the program and its research.
“I did not expect any of this to happen when I came to Northeastern. It’s the people that make the school. People actually care about you and care about your future.” ~ André Herrera Charpentier “He really understood complex concepts and theories, and the thoughtfulness of his observations were really remarkable,” Erber said. “I could see the way he was thinking and that too led me to believe that he had a lot of potential.” Northeastern’s faculty members play an important role in empowering undocumented students, especially since revealing their status can very difficult for them, Moreno said. Indeed, Herrera Charpentier credits Erber with encouraging him to pursue his academic curiosity. “After I took a class with Dr. Erber, she suggested I get into research,” Herrera Charpentier said. “After working with her in the summer, she suggested I join the MARC program. I try to do my best in school, but it was thanks to that program that opportunities opened for me.”
