North East Valleys Victoria

Seasonal Indulgence Food and Wine Guide 6th Edition

welcome to the

North East Valleys Home to some of Australia’s finest gourmet producers, most acclaimed restaurateurs

and internationally recognised winemakers,

Victoria’s premier food and wine region is a land of awesome scale and diversity.

Bound by the Australian Alps and the Murray River, these verdant valleys offer everything from hand-made cheeses to hand-crafted lagers – not to mention an inspiring backdrop to a low-stress break. Let your palate lead you through nineteenth century streetscapes, their fine restaurants, and their stores selling local mustards, meats, wines – cool climate whites, fullbodied reds to luscious muscats.

You’ll find a land inspiring lazy summer picnics under ancient river red gums and winter evenings spent dining by the fire. Hear tips, tales and possibly some tall tales from the people you’ll meet. It’s their passion and love of what they do that makes the North East Valleys a place to discover.

You’ll wonder why you don’t visit and discover more often….

Take a bike ride and venture further afield into the vineyards, orchards and olive groves. Take your time and escape!

North East Farmers’ Markets Plan your next trip to the North East to coincide with a visit to one of our authentic Farmers’ Markets. You’ll generally find one of our four markets operating on any given weekend throughout the year! ‘Fresh is obviously Best’ and this is certainly the basis of all our Farmers’ Markets. There’s a real difference when you taste a tree-ripened peach that was picked the day before, a vine-ripened tomato that simple oozes real flavour or a Murray Cod that was swimming around that morning. Produce from our Farmers’ Markets will reinvigorate your taste buds. Buying locally reduces the food kilometres that the produce has to travel to get to market, actively contributing to reducing carbon emissions whilst being guaranteed access to quality, freshly harvested produce that supports local farmers and puts money back into the local rural communities. Now that’s got to be a good thing!

Post-war Italian settlement brought chestnuts, tobacco and the seeds of a dynamic food culture to the region’s pristine valleys. Today, the continental climate supports a huge range of agricultural enterprises from deer, trout and berry farms, to nut groves, apple orchards, and vegetables. Great cafés and fine restaurants are plentiful, as are friendly cellar doors allowing visitors to experience the rich velvety reds, crisp elegant whites, and sensational sparkling wines for which the region is known. The long, moderate growing conditions produce high quality grapes with intense fruit flavours and natural acidity. From the kaleidoscopic colours of autumn, to the white peaks of winter, new growth in spring and summer’s big blue skies, the Alpine Valleys are an expression of colour, vibrancy, and flavour. The 242-hectare property on which her restaurant 'Waddingtons at Kergunyah' is situated, is a working farm, and has been since Jan’s family, the Wallaces, settled it in 1868. Paddocks are stocked with descendants of the Hereford cattle mustered in the High Country by Jan’s forebears until the 1920s, the same family who in 1889 built Wallaces Hut at Falls Creek, now the oldest surviving cattlemen’s hut. Farmed organically since Jan’s father, Norman, was at the helm, the paddocks of native grasses have never seen super-phosphates. Norman imported Australia’s first seaweed fertilisers, and held organic field days on the farm from the 1970s. This ‘tread lightly on the land’ philosophy is central to Jan’s approach to cooking. Her menu is centred on organic, home grown, and local produce, and revels in seasonal change. Jan’s a big supporter of local producers, eggs from down the road, goat from Myrtleford, walnuts from Gapsted, and smallgoods and other meats from Wodonga’s Morrison Street Continental Butchers.

Whatever greens the garden can’t keep up with come from Willowbank Farm, and the breads and pasta are made in the kitchen. Gundowring ice cream is just across the road. The building; handcrafted by Jan’s husband Rod using fallen timber from the property, takes in sweeping views of the heritage-listed Kiewa Valley. People say Jan’s food has ‘an honesty’ about it — clear flavours and bright, stunning colours. Expect to find dishes such as crisp-fried zucchini flowers filled with Milawa chèvre and herbs; a deliciously salty, sweet and crunchy salad of pancetta, caramelised pear, walnuts and tomatoes; or a Black Genoa fig and frangipani tart with figs picked straight from the garden. welcome to

Beechworth Two dozen vineyards are dotted throughout the mineral-laden hills of Beechworth — mostly tended by family winegrowers possessing a fierce, independent passion for making the best artisanal wines. Beechworth Cycle Trail 1: Beechworth Town Ride Distance: Ride Surface: Description: Ride Grade: Ride Time:

11km or 17km Road/Trail Flat to undulating Beginner Allow 1 hr

Suited to all ages and riding abilities, this ride can chameleon itself to suit your desired expereince and available time. With a touch of history, a pinch of bush, plenty of colour and an abundance of what Beechworth is renowned – food and wine, this ride can be tailored to suit your preference for adventure, for grazing or both.

Beechworth’s vineyards are sited on ridge tops or hillsides. Its ancient geology is bony, weathered ground with meagre vineyard soils which restrict grape yield to produce concentrated, intense wines. Long, dry, russet autumns, warm sunny days and cool nights allow flavour and colour to build, not only in the wine grapes but in the shiny red apples and other fruits of Stanley and surrounds. The Beechworth region is rich with locally grown produce; fruit, vegetables, honey, nuts and preserves, and excellent restaurants, cafés, bakeries and food and wine retailers to showcase it. Beechworth and Yackandandah are beautifully preserved Gold Era towns. The Beechworth Historic & Cultural Precinct is a superb collection of nationally significant heritage buildings which include the Courthouse in which Ned Kelly, his mother Ellen and brother Dan all stood trial. The Precinct also includes the fascinating Robert O’Hara Burke Museum with its rare Natural History, Chinese and Aboriginal collections. Beechworth is also a great place for retail therapy with an eclectic mix of sophisticated fashion boutiques, gift and homeware shops, then stop for a coffee, snack or memorable meal. BEECHWORTH profile

Jodie Goldsworthy pr ofile

Director

Beechworth Honey

Jodie speaks ardently about her love of honey – so much so that she confidently tells us they prioritise product quality much higher than profit. Sixteen years ago, Jodie and Steven Goldsworthy – a young couple aged 22 and 25 respectively – took the plunge into the honey trade with what Jodie describes as ‘absolutely nothing’. Despite Jodie coming from four generations of bee farmers, she had no aspirations to ply the family trade; that is until Steven caught the sweet bug. ‘A lot of people assume that there’s a big company behind us because we’re in the supermarkets now,’ says Jodie, who is as hands-on with the business today as she was at their inception. ‘We don’t blend for a consistent flavour,’ explains Jodie of the processes behind their classic range. “We opened the Beechworth Honey Experience to show people the care we take in bringing them their honey. Coming from a family of beekeepers, we’re passionate about Australian honey and we wanted to share that.’ The Goldsworthys emerged as the Aussie ‘honey specialists’ as a result of their commitment during times of drought to source only Australianproduced honey to fill their markets.

They felt their story was an important one to share, so they established The Beechworth Honey Experience in Beechworth, which enables visitors to discover the many possibilities of honey – including a selection of beauty products – taste testing, and even free honey tours that run seven days a week. Jodie describes this visitor centre as “an exciting thing for us”. “There are over 780 different species of eucalypt so the varieties of honey are endless,” she remarks. “Not many people realise but two thirds of produce – grains, fruit and vegies and so on – are dependent on honey bees for pollination.” Looks like we owe much more to these little critters than we may initially have realised. The Beechworth Honey Experience Corner Ford & Church Streets, Beechworth tel: (03) 5728 1432 Open 7 days, 9am to 5.30pm (closed Christmas Day)

GLENROWAN welcome

welcome to

Glenrowan Glenrowan is steeped in the infamous tales of Ned and the Kelly gang but it also has a long and rich wine making history dating back to 1870. Glenrowan Cycle Trail: Glenrowan Ride Distance: 21km or 51km Ride Surface: Road Description: Undulating to steep Ride Grade: Competent Ride Time: Allow 3 hrs A cycling mecca amongst local riders, the large loop around the Warby Ranges is 51kms in length. However don't be disheartened if you are not a cycling fanatic and you just want to take a pedal through this renowned and rapidly growing wine region. You can shorten the journey by either riding (you will need your hill climbing legs in top condition) or cheat and take the car, over Taminick gap and then explore the less challenging region of Taminick and Glenrowan with its plethora of vineyards and views.

The past 130 years have seen Glenrowan establish a reputation for full-bodied reds, particularly Shiraz, fragrant whites, and delicious fortified wines. The cellar doors are intimate, historic and welcoming. Summer is a wonderful time around Glenrowan for fruit lovers. The growers of the region produce strawberries, cherries, nectarines and peaches. A number of these orchards are open to the public, who can’t resist freshly picked, tree-ripened, sun-kissed summer fruits, also available as jam, ice cream, preserves and chutney throughout the year. Sweeping views from the Warby - Ovens National Park southwards out over Winton Wetlands or northeast towards Mt Buffalo offer many options for a picturesque picnic spot, bird watching and bushwalking. Explore the Warby - Ovens National Park, including Ryan’s Lookout, Mount Glenrowan and Salisbury Falls (during the cooler months) and see the country through the eyes of Ned Kelly. The township of Glenrowan is the site of the final siege and capture of Kelly and his gang in 1880. Their story is preserved in its attractions, museums and historic walks.

GLENROWAN profile

James Booth pr ofile

Winemaker

Booth’s Taminick Cellars

‘It becomes a part of you,' states James Booth on his decision to ply the family trade. ‘When you’ve got that history, it’s very hard to step away.’ Since the turn of last century – when Esca Booth discovered the richness of historic Glenrowan’s granite soils – one Booth after another has continued the family’s winemaking legacy.

‘It’s made by picking the grapes early,’ says James. ‘It’s matured in French oak, has a lower alcohol content and a very different taste to the usual shiraz.’

Only a few things have changed with technological progress – even vines from 1919 still stand – one of those being an orchard bursting with peaches, the pet project of James’ father, Peter.

Another grape variety that piqued James’ interest recently is nero d’avola. Described by James as ‘Sicily’s answer to shiraz’, he considers it to display more of a savoury background. Having only planted the vines in 2008, you’ll have to wait until about 2012 before sampling this intriguing new drop but, as Taminick legend would have it, it’ll be well worth the wait.

But wine is still singularly the most important focus for Taminick Cellars. The family haven’t felt the urge to open a café/restaurant, amply serviced by the likes of Baileys and Auldstones nearby. James sees the appeal of the North East area as being the massive diversity in food and wine over a mere 50km radius – ‘it’s a gourmand’s idea of heaven.’ The youngest Booth winemaker has been officially creating new wines since 2004 when he took up the reins from Peter. He talks proudly about his innovations, particularly a new type of shiraz that’s been on the agenda over the last few years.

The towns at the heart of the valley sit nestled into the foothills of Victoria’s high country so the views are superb. Oh.. and did we mention the food and wine on offer!

You will find the Italian influence on the culture of the King Valley evident in the warmth and generosity of the welcome offered at cellar doors and restaurants. The King Valley is remarkable for its imaginative use of ‘alternative’ grape varieties by winemakers who long ago recognised the region’s cool climate potential. The mix of steep slopes, soil types, and micro climates provide a mosaic of vineyard opportunities for inquisitive winemakers to explore and develop the varieties and wines styles that are the hallmark of the region’s wines. Many cellar doors are open seven days in the King Valley, some having their own restaurants with distinct Italian flavour. Visit during one of the regions annual celebrations; La Dolce Vita held in November or on the Queen’s Birthday for a Weekend Fit for a King. Soak up generous hospitality, warming food and new release innovative wine styles.

They’ve only been making Prosecco wines in the King Valley for a few years, but they’re onto a winner. Prosecco, an Italian grape variety, is a pure, clean, fizzy wine that tastes slightly of apples – grown in the shadows of the Victorian Alps. The Italian wine industry is so worried about our Proseccos, they tried unsuccessfully to ban our King Valley winemakers from producing them. Take a journey along our own route locally known as “Prosecco Road” to taste fabulous Prosecco wines. Start in Milawa and head into the King Valley, or in reverse. At either end there are a number of choices for lunch . Stop at Brown Brothers, Chrismont, Sam Miranda & Dal Zotto Wines to enjoy 4 fabulous Proseccos. Winemaker Michael Dal Zotto, says “one of the proudest moments for Dal Zotto Wines was in 2004 when we released Australia’s first ever-commercial Prosecco. We have a strong connection with Prosecco, as it is a variety that is from Otto’s hometown Valdobbiadene.” www.northeastvalleys.com.au |

Katrina Pizzini Owner and Nonna Katrina Pizzini pr ofile

Pizzini Wines

‘Our business is about our family, the friends we have made in the past and those we will make in our future, passing on our food traditions… and then, of course, let’s not forget the wine.’ In the 1950s, Roberto and Rosetta Pizzini packed up their three children in the Italian Alps seeking new opportunities on the fertile, North East Victorian terrain. As was the case with many emigrating Italian families at that time, they farmed tobacco before a crippling quota system in the 1970s saw them turn to a more lucrative crop - grapes. Today, son Alfred Pizzini and his wife Katrina propagate Roberto and Rosetta’s passion and commitment that sits at the heart of every glass produced under the Pizzini Wines label. ‘Our focus is to make wines that can be enjoyed with food, not to compete with it,’ explains Katrina. ‘Italian style wines are perfect for this as they are not too fruit-driven and still have those lovely rich, spicy, earthy characters that don’t overpower your palate.’ Recently, Katrina opened her cooking school A Tavola! “A Tavola” is called in many Italian households around meal times as it loosely translates to “Come to the table and eat”. In

53

some of her cooking classes, Katrina divulges the family recipes as inherited from her mother-inlaw, Rosetta. ‘We are really excited about passing on some of our traditions,’ continues Katrina, ‘especially some of the food preparations that past generations used in Italy and when they emigrated to Australia.’ In other classes Katrina teaches more contemporary dishes. Six to eight classes are held monthly, the class timetable can be found at www.pizzini.com.au Pizzini Wines is an inspirational example of how the cultures of a different land have taken root and flourished in North East Victoria. ‘To have our children a part of what we do everyday is fulfilling and very important to us,’ concludes Katrina, proudly. MILAWA GOURMET REGION profile

Sam Miranda profile

Owner & Winemaker

Sam Miranda of the King Valley

‘Everyone in the North East loves food and wine,’ it’s a unifying factor of the area. Everyone is so accommodating. People are here for the love of food and wine, rather than the money.’ It’s difficult to miss the beautiful blonde wood ‘tower’ that identifies Sam Miranda’s illustrious vineyard on the Snow Road; in fact, it’s become something of an icon in Oxley. As most important decisions are made in the North East, the concept for this architecturally designed cellar door came about over dinner and a few bottles of wine. Originally harking from an Italian winemaking family in Griffith, New South Wales, Sam’s professional connections with the Victorian North East saw a more personal tie steadily develop. In 1996, his family purchased a property, which he then purchased off them in 2003 and reinvented under the name ‘Sam Miranda of the King Valley’. The first vintage took place in 2004. ‘Tourism wasn’t as established here when I arrived,’ says Sam. ‘I liked the idea of coming into an area where I could be involved in the nuts & bolts of its development. This region isn’t dominated by big companies – even Brown Brothers, that’s still family owned.’

67

Despite Sam Miranda’s vineyard looking something like a colossus, it also reflects the intimacy of his family – a quality that distinctly defines businesses of the region. Sam talks about his plans to introduce pecking chickens to the cellar door next year, as well as extending the winery’s veggie and herb garden. ‘My daughters love to come out and crush the grapes with their feet,’ says Sam of his gaggle of girls who suggest a future of a more feminine persuasion for Sam Miranda. His Girls’ Block Cabernet Petit Verdot even sports the artwork of one of his daughters on the label. ‘It’s up to them if they want to work in wine, though,’ admits Sam. ‘It’s too early to tell.’ Sam Miranda of the King Valley Snow Road, Oxley tel: (03) 5727 3888 www.sammiranda.com.au

rutherglen welcome

welcome to

Rutherglen With many of Rutherglen’s worldrenowned vineyards planted as early as the 1860’s, the region possesses an extremely rich wine-making history. Rutherglen Cycle Trail: Wahgunyah Ride Distance: 29km Ride Surface: Road Description: Flat Ride Grade: Intermediate Ride Time: Allow 2hrs 30 mins With relatively flat terrain, Rutherglen and Wahgunyah are the perfect places to explore on bike. With winemakers, orchardists, cafes and characters scattered at close range you will find yourself at the next farm gate before you’ve even had time to work up a sweat. With the Murray River weaving in and out of your ride, why not plan to picnic on its banks, take a dip or simply just marvel at the magnificence of the 100 year old gums that line it either side.

On the fertile river plains of the Murray Valley, the unique combination of soil, sunshine and a little bit of Rutherglen magic makes it the home of Australia’s internationallyrenowned fortified Muscat and Tokay. Durif is unique to the area and is one of the rich, robust reds Rutherglen is famous for. There are also crisp whites, sparkling reds and whites and fine, medium-bodied reds to ensure every wine-drinker’s wish is fulfilled. Where there’s wine there’s great food. The region’s farming heritage has flowed naturally into vibrant food production and appreciation including olives and olive oil, cherries, chutneys, preserves and pickles, lamb, farmed rainbow trout and Murray cod and boutique beer. Ruthlerglen’s cafés, restaurants and winery restaurants boast the best of this and other fresh produce as do the welcoming villages of Wahgunyah and Barnawartha. Eliza Brown pr ofile

CEO & Owner

All Saints Estate & St Leonards Vineyard

‘It’s a little Europe up here, I’m constantly surprised by the diversity and the people I get to meet. There are some real personalities.’ Given Eliza Brown now sits comfortably as matriarch of her father’s company – and was finalist in the 2007 Telstra Business Women’s Awards, as well as named one of the Future Leaders of the Australian Wine Industry – you’d assume she was groomed for the position. ‘My family talked about food and wine as far back as I can remember,’ says Eliza in recalling memories of building cubbies and skipping through the vines of Brown Brothers’ revered vineyard in Milawa. ‘But I wanted to become a photographer… until I realised I was no good at it,’ she humbly adds. Thanks to the persistence of her father, Peter, talking up the North Eastern weather – ‘more sunny days each year than Surfer’s Paradise,’ she states as fact – Eliza was coaxed back from the city. She commenced at All Saints Estate – the grandiose Rutherglen winery situated in a Scottish castle that Peter had purchased independently of the family business. However, Eliza’s initiation into company CEO was an unexpected one, literally taking place over

night when she was three months pregnant. ‘Dad was killed in a road accident on a Sunday,’ she admits, ‘Then, on the Monday, I became CEO of the company.’ Negotiating the ins and outs of her father’s business was not easy, but – with help from her sister, Angela, and brother, Nick – Eliza struggled out from behind the eight ball and upheld her father’s formidable legacy through both All Saints and St Leonards wineries. It also helped that his promotion of the region lived up to the hype. When asked about juggling life, motherhood and business, Eliza doesn’t believe in magic formulas. ‘You know what girls are like, we just do everything.’ All Saints Estate All Saints Road, Wahgunyah (Rutherglen) tel: (02) 6035 2222 www.allsaintswine.com.au St Leonards Vineyard St Leonards Road, Wahgunyah (Rutherglen) tel: 1800 021 621 www.stleonardswine.com.au
