Between the games of blackjack, the endless snapping of photos at the photo booth and a virtually infinite line at the dessert table, students found several alternatives to homework Thursday night while participating in UNI Dance Marathon’s Black Tie Affair at the Threehouse: A Wesley Foundation. “Last year, it was just a dance and a photo booth,” said Sarah Hanson, head of Dance Marathon’s public relations committee and co-chair of the Black Tie Affair. “We had expected 75 students to come when 500 came. Student organizations, intramurals and sports clubs at the University of Northern Iowa are being audited. The audit is being done to make sure they are “operating

efficiently, effectively and complying with university policies and procedures and applicable state and federal laws and regulations,” according to the internal audits report of the Iowa Board of Regents. At the Feb. 6 BOR meeting, the three state universities

reported on the state of the audits they are undertaking. The audits will not be completed until July 2014. UNI is currently listed as moderate, meaning the audit could seriously affect departments in the university, require the attention of higher authority, involve

some lawful intervention and lead to minor consequences if ignored, involve weakness in internal controls or potentially save UNI thousands of dollars if the school follows audit recommendations.

Crime in Cedar Falls has dropped 12.1 percent since 2012, according to a report from the Jeff Olson Cedar Falls Police Department. Captain Jeff Sitzmann attributes the crime decline to both Cedar Falls’ citizens and the nature of crime. “I think a lot of it is cyclical,” Sitzmann said. “It is somewhat following some national trends and we expect a lot of up and down in our crime rate. We’re really happy with the decreasing crime rate; more than anything, it’s an attribute of the citizenry.” Along with the citizens, Sitzmann attributes the low crime in Cedar Falls to the industry within the city and the city’s cooperation. “I think the financial stability of the city has a lot to do with our crime rate,” Sitzmann said. “We have a booming industry, and as far as a government entity, we have great partnerships with local businesses and schools.” In the last 25 years, crime has fallen by 25 percent, but there have been no major changes in the city to attribute this trend to, said Police Chief Jeff Olson.

However, UNI President William Ruud is confident the audit will help university organizations. “Audits are made to improve. It pointed out some areas (organizations) can do better at,” Ruud said. “I think it’s good recognition that all 250 of them are engaged and involved. I think every audit is addressing continuous improvement.”

Additionally, the Education and Student A f f a i r s Committee spoke about Gloria f a c u l t y Gibson resignations and said 52.3 percent of UNI’s resigned faculty resigned to accept a position at another university. Currently, the universities are addressing three issues concerning recruitment and retention: competitive compensation and benefits,

quality of life, and campus and community engagement, which UNI’s Provost Gloria Gibson and BOR President Bruce Rastetter both expressed concern for addressing. “We work very hard to recruit and retain faculty here,” Gibson said. “Whether they are assistant, associate or full professors, we have exceptional faculty here. Doing as much as we can to support them in their work will help us retain them.”

Focus on learning, not grades LAURA HEBBELN hebbelnl @uni.edu

With the start of the new year and a new semester, college students are making goals for themselves. The most common are to eat healthier, sleep more and get better grades. All of these are great goals, but for college students, getting good grades is usually deemed as being the most important. But are good grades really that important? What if, instead of striving to get straight A’s, we turned our attention to creating learning habits that last our entire lives? In his book “What the Best College Students Do,”

historian, educator and author Ken Bain describes three different types of learning. Bain calls the one I have described above, the desire to achieve straight A’s, strategic learning. It is learning aimed primarily for high grades and honors, which does not do students much good once they are done with their college careers. The most ineffective type of learning Bain describes is surface learning, which is when students do just enough memorization and work to get by. The best type of learning, according to Bain, which I think we all should be striving for in this new semester, is deep learning, or the autonomous striving for meaning. People who understand the importance of deep

learning are usually more successful in life than people who only got straight A’s in college. Some of these successful deep learners were quoted in a 2013 article focused on Bain’s book by Annie Murphy Paul. Astrophysicist Neil Tyson said when he was in college, he was “moved by curiosity, interest and fascination, not by making the highest scores on a test.” He said that as an adult, grades become irrelevant; no one asks what they were. “Ambition and innovation trump grades every time,” Tyson said. Instead of focusing on grades, Jeff Hawkins, an engineer, contemplated four profound questions during his college: Why does anything exist? Given that a universe does exist, why do we have the particular laws

THINKSTOCK

of physics that we do? Why do we have life, and what is nature? And given that life exists, what’s the nature of intelligence? Hawkins noted that as he pursued these questions in college, “there was no place to look it up, no simple answer.” While working to reach

our academic goals during this new semester, we should keep the idea of deep learning in mind and let it replace our desire to achieve straight A’s. In the future, it won’t be our grades that matter, but the way we think. Deep learning will help us become more critical and creative thinkers.

Take some time to thank a farmer RENAE BEARD

renaeb @uni.edu

As lackluster as the Super Bowl and its commercials were this past Sunday, I was happy to see farmers gaining some hard-earned recognition. As a sixth-generation farmer myself, I’m proud to see some light being shed on those of us entrusted with the imperative role of feeding the world. There are approximately 318,892,103 people living in the United States, and that number is steadily rising even as you read this. Fortunately, America is able to call about 24 million members of their work force farmers. However, at a mere 17 percent of the employed labor in this country, each of those farmers is tasked with the vital responsibility of feeding roughly 155 Americans, according to farmersfeedus.org. With a birth every 8 seconds, farmers have their work cut out for them. Iowa is a prominent contributor to the agriculture industry, and we’ve got a lot to brag about. The state’s hog farmers rank first in the nation for pork production, raising 8 million hogs, almost three times the number of

Iowans. Cattle farmers impressively make a $5.1 billion contribution to the state’s economy, ranking seventh in the U.S. for beef production. The dairy industry is also booming, employing 26,000 statewide at approximately 2,000 Iowan dairies, and the list continues. But, behind each one of these statistics is the face of a farmer: someone who can raise a family and a crop; someone who checks their cows at three in the morning during calving season and feeds those cows in the wind, rain and snow; someone who labors in the field from before sunrise until after sundown, but still finds the time to pause for ballgames and dance recitals; someone who waits for no weather, has never had a sick day, works every weekend and will never have a holiday off. But most importantly, a farmer is someone who works for people they have never met, feeding families they will never see, in cities they have never heard of. My message is simple: if you have ever used a crayon (soybeans), pulled on a T-shirt (cotton), enjoyed an ice cream cone (dairy), stopped at a fast food restaurant (beef) or filled your car with gas (corn), you can thank a farmer.

PRESENTATION

UNIFI hosts 6th annual Darwin Week RACHEL BALDUS

Associate Campus Life Editor

University of Northern Iowa Freethinkers and Inquirers is hosting Darwin Week Feb. 10-13. The week will consist of lectures in the Center for Multicultural Education in Maucker Union. This is the sixth annual Darwin Week. Four lectures are scheduled for each day, and each day will revolve around one theme. Respectively, the themes for Monday through Thursday are skepticism, science, activism and sexuality. “Darwin Week is great because it can introduce you to ideas that you may never

have heard before,” said Margaret Ner vig, U N I F I director of membership. “There are Margaret Nervig so many different topics that everyone can find something they’re interested with.” The series of speakers starts today at 2 p.m. with John Fritch, associate dean and professor of the College of Humanities, Arts and Sciences. His lecture is titled “A Healthy Dose of Skepticism.” “My goal is to demonstrate to the audience the important

role of skepticism in our lives as citizens,” Fritch said. “I also will explore the need to limit that skepticism. We must be skeptical, but not overly skeptical as we make decisions in our society and in our own lives.” John Johnson, history professor, will give an activism lecture called “The Tinker Case: Three Iowa Kids Question Authority and the Repercussions Are Still Being Felt a Half Century Later.” In the Tinker v. Des Moines court case, three students wore black armbands to school in protest of the Vietnam War. The school had banned the wearing of arm-

bands and the students were suspended. Their parents then sued the school and the case was taken to the Supreme Court, which ruled in favor of the students. “I think (the audience) should be interested in the fact that three Iowa kids changed American law and they did it in a responsible, thoughtful and courageous way,” Johnson said. “The country was going through some major changes in the 1960s and the Tinkers and Chris Eckhardt were part of it. For young people today, they can draw inspiration from what these kids did back in ’65.” On Thursday, Harry

Brod, professor of sociology and humanities, will give a lecture at 3:30 p.m. titled “Pornography: Private Right or Public Menace?” Brod will talk about the role pornography plays by exploring claims for and against it. “I hope people will leave with a better understanding of different perspectives and better able to make their own informed decisions,” Brod said. Each day will also feature a keynote speaker at 7 p.m. The times and speakers for Darwin Week can be found at http://darwinweek.com and on their Facebook page, www. facebook.com/DarwinWeek.

gorgeous and handsome.” Kathleen Madsen, freshman biology major, chose to participate because she cannot attend the big event in March but still wanted to support Dance Marathon’s cause. “The atmosphere is exciting, and it’s a great way to give back,” Madsen said.

About 20 students on Dance Marathon’s public relations committee and fundraising committee organized the Black Tie Affair. Because the activities were geared toward an older audience, Hanson said this is one of Dance Marathon’s only events kids are not invited to attend.

“Normally when you think of Dance Marathon, you think orange, loud and obnoxious. We wanted the evening to be toned-down and classy,” Hanson said. Last year, the Black Tie Affair raised about $1,000. Hanson expected this year’s event to bring in even more revenue.

“The point of tonight is to focus on something outside of school and realize you can be a part of something bigger than yourself,” Hanson said “Sometimes students forget they can help the community in really small ways. Anyone can make an impact in the community.”

UNI on 3-game skid

The fifth-ranked University of Northern Iowa wrestling team wanted to avenge last season’s loss in Ames against the 17-ranked Iowa State University Cyclones Saturday when ISU came to the West Gym. The Panthers were also looking to be the first UNI team in 58 years to win their first 10 duals of the season. They accomplished both of those things Saturday night. “We’re one of three teams in the country who are still undefeated,” said head coach Doug Schwab. “The perception of us being little brother in the state of Iowa is gone.” The meet began with a match at 197 pounds, in which second-ranked Kyven Gadson defeated Basil Minto to take an early 3-0 Cyclone lead. At 185 pounds, Blaize Cabell won in a ferocious battle over Quean Smith. The match was scoreless until, with 1 minute and 28 seconds remaining, Cabell got an escape point to make the match 1-0. Cabell took Smith down at the end of the second period to increase his lead to 3-1 and got another takedown to put the score at 5-1, putting UNI on the board. Dylan Peters wasted no time taking down Earl Hall at 125 pounds. Peters took a 5-0 lead in the first period before using a takedown in the second period to increase his lead to 7-1. Peters used another takedown, riding time and an escape in the final period to win by major decision, 11-2. Joe Colon, who came into the match ranked third in

the country in technical falls, earned another one against Shayden Terukina. Colon used a takedown and two near falls to take an 8-0 lead in the first period. He improved his lead to 14-0 with two more near falls and a takedown in the second period. After a stalling warning on Iowa State, Colon was gunning for the technical fall and got it early in the third period, with the final score at 16-1. Joey Lazor wasted no time in ending his match against Gabe Moreno at 144 pounds. With a 4-1 lead, Lazor flipped Moreno on his back and got the pin just two minutes into the match. At 149 pounds, Tyler Patten earned a huge victory over Luke Goettl, giving the Panthers a 21-4 lead over the Cyclones. After falling behind 5-0 in the first period, Patten

fought back in the second period to take a 6-5 lead. In the final period, Patten took down Goettl to put the score at 8-6. “That was a huge win for Patten tonight,” Schwab said. “After falling down 5-0 in the first period, it was very impressive to watch him fight back. I’m so proud of him.” Iowa State won three consecutive matches at 149, 157, and 174 pounds to cut the Panther lead to 21-13. Ryan Loder finished the meet with a shutout of Lelund Weatherspoon, 5-0. Loder dominated the entire match, compiling 4 minutes and 57 seconds of riding time to close out the Cyclones, 24-13. “Our guys can wrestle with anyone in the country and we need to have the mindset to go out and compete for national championships,” Schwab said.

Wednesday, the Illinois State Redbirds’ defense derailed the Panthers’ league-leading scoring offense, which has struggled to work outside the McLeod Center. The University of Northern Iowa men’s basketball team held the halftime lead at 34-31, the 18th time in 23 games this season they have held it. The Redbird bench played a big role in their home 76-65 win. They outscored UNI’s bench 26-6. Senior Chip Rank only logged 5 minutes while Nate Buss continued to sit out to recover from arthroscopic knee surgery. Freshman small forward Jeremy Morgan got the start in place of Buss against the Redbirds and logged 26 minutes. Morgan scored 10 points, grabbed four rebounds, dished out three assists and added one steal. Saturday night, the Panthers hosted the fourth-ranked Wichita State University Shockers. A sellout crowd of over 7,000 atttended the matchup, which was broadcasted nationally on ESPN2. In the first half with 9:28

remaining, junior forward Seth Tuttle converted a layup to give the Panthers a 20-19 lead. The Shockers answered with a steady barrage of 3-pointers and trips to the free-throw line. Wichita State made 11 free throws late in the first half, giving them a 44-37 edge at halftime. After intermission, UNI came out firing, cutting the halftime deficit to 44-43 at the 18 minute mark. However, the Shockers imposed their will as they steadily built a lead and closed out the Panthers 82-73. Matt Bohannon and Seth Tuttle led the scoring efforts for UNI. Bohannon shot 5-9 from beyond the arc, scoring 17 points. Tuttle scored 16 points while grabbing eight rebounds. The Shockers held UNI junior point guard Deon Mitchell to just 2 points on 1-7 shooting, which WSU head coach Gregg Marshall said was a key goal. “Keep (Mitchell) in front,” Marshall said. “He’s tremendous with the ball in his hands. We didn’t want to foul him; we wanted him to take tough shots.” The Panthers look to get back on track at 7 p.m. Wednesday when they take on Loyola at the McLeod Center.

WOMEN’S BASKETBALL

Panthers back to .500, sitting in 3rd place NICK ALVARADO

Sports Writer

The University of Northern Iowa women’s basketball team took out its broom and completed the season sweep of the Southern Illinois University series with a 78-48 win Thursday evening. The 30-point win gave UNI its second 30 plus winning margin against the Salukis in as many games. Unfortunately for the Panthers, they couldn’t pull off the same feat against Evansville University, who defeated UNI 59-50 to split the season series Saturday afternoon. Forward Jen Keitel either led or tied for a team high in points in both games, scoring

19 against SIU and 11 against Evansville. These were the fifth and sixth games in a row that Keitel scored in double-digits, making 13 total games for the season. Keitel also tied her season high in assists against Evansville, recording five. Other notable performances include guard Brooke Brown’s 17-point effort against SIU, which included a 16-point first half and a near double-double with nine rebounds. Hannah Schonhardt recorded 11 points and 10 rebounds against Evansville and was one of four Panthers to score in double figures. The other three UNI players to record a double-digit scores against Evansville were Keitel, guard Stephanie Davison and guard Brittni Donaldson.

All four recorded 11 points. After splitting the weekend games, the Panthers are sitting at .500 once again with an 11-11 overall record. They still stand in third place in the Missouri Valley Conference with a 7-4 record in conference play. The Panthers’ loss did not hurt thier chances against fourth-place Missouri State University, and they hold a one-game lead to provide a cushion. To keep their third place standing, the Panthers need to pick up wins against inner-conference teams they’ve already played this season. UNI defeated Missouri Jan. 18 during their last meeting, but Missouri has picked up four consecutive victories since then. This makes the Panthers’ Feb. 14 contest

against them one of significant importance. A season sweep of MSU will give UNI a substantial cushion against the Bears in the conference. It will also effectively eliminate MSU as a threat to the Panthers barring a UNI collapse over the last few games of the season.
