United Faculty challenges lack of COVID-19 safety procedures NIXSON BENITEZ

CAROLINE CHRISTENSEN News Editor
As COVID-19 vaccines became readily available to all adults in Iowa, there was a renewed sense of hope that life would soon return to normal. However, with the emergence of the Delta variant and a sharp increase in COVID-19 cases, people are once again masking up and taking precautions against the virus. All three state universities cannot require masks on campus and are prohibited from asking the vaccination status of faculty or students. The lack of COVID-19 precautions on UNI’s campus has prompted a statement from United Faculty, the union representing roughly 600 UNI faculty members. The president of United Faculty Becky Wilson
Hawbaker recognizes the university has little control over the decisions made by the Board of Regents or the State Legislature but emphasizes the areas in which the university can better protect faculty and students including implementing social distancing in classrooms. Hawbaker notes a concern from a professor who has well over 100 students in their class. “We were just contacted by a member who has 157 students in Sabin 2 which is an auditorium style classroom,” Hawbaker said. “There is no distance, and everyone is pretty crammed in there. It’s hard, because what is she supposed to do? She can ask or encourage students to wear masks but she can’t require it.” A statement released by
United Faculty emphasizes the need for more COVID-19 safety procedures on campus. “UNI has faculty with their own serious health risks who have been denied an accommodation to teach online in fall 2021 because it is, according to university officials, inconvenient for students to switch course delivery.” The statement continues regarding concerns over how faculty can protect their families who are still vulnerable to COVID-19. “We have faculty with vulnerable and unvaccinated children or other family members who are not eligible for ADA accommodations left with few options to protect their family as you require them to teach face to face in a mask-optional, socially-distanced-impossible environ-

As of Aug. 23, the PfizerBioNTech vaccine has been fully approved by the federal Food and Drug Administration. Testing for COVID-19 is also available free of charge through the Student Health Center by calling to make an appointment or by picking up an at-home test kit by Test Iowa. Fully vaccinated students, no matter what date they become fully vaccinated, can show their vaccination card and UNI ID to the information desk in Maucker Union
to receive a $25 gift card to the bookstore starting Aug. 30. The gift card can be used on clothing or other regalia. The information desk operates from noon to 4 p.m. during the week, not including weekends. Students have until Oct. 15 to take advantage of the offer. Northern Iowa Student Government (NISG) president, Samantha Bennett, suggested the gift card incentive. She found it important to recognize those who are just now getting vaccinated but also those who took the steps to get vaccinated earlier on and make sure everyone could take advantage of the incentive.
ment. This is professionally and ethically untenable.” Student body President Samantha Bennett supports United Faculty’s demands for more COVID-19 precautions. “I definitely sympathize with the faculty,” Bennett said. “I wish that they did have more of an option to say, ‘I’m not comfortable’ and ‘have that changed.’” Bennett is currently on the campus COVID-19 response team and is continuing conversations with administrators and faculty. “They want to prioritize giving students that normal experience, and they want to prioritize being back in person in normal capacity,” Bennett said. “I don’t think that should come at the cost of people’s safety and well being though. And I really do feel for faculty who have
to teach in some of these circumstances and don’t feel safe or comfortable doing so.” Faculty members with health concerns over COVID19 are put in a difficult situation, as Hawbaker affirms. “Is the risk of some kind of reprimand worth endangering their own health or the health of their students and families?” She continues, “We were all looking forward to coming back and having things be normal, as we assumed the vaccine would bring that. But we cannot deny that that is not what is happening.” Although Bennett would like to see more COVID-19 precautions to help faculty and students feel more comfortable, the university’s hands are tied in many ways. your wellbeing. As you may have read in prior communications from ForwardTogether, UNI will not be requiring vaccinations. This is due to legislation passed by Governor Kim Reynolds which deems it unlawful for Iowa’s major public universities to have such a requirement. The Iowa Board of Regents has ruled similarly, additionally ruling that mask-wearing may no longer be mandated by the institutions subject to their jurisdiction – of which UNI is one. As an institution, we cannot require students to get vaccinated or wear a mask, or else lose our eligibility for state grants and contracts. Without these, our ability to remain open and operating would be jeopardized. What UNI can and will do is continue to communicate to students the most up to date information regarding COVID-19 and its variants, provide opportunities for vaccinations on campus as well as various other strategies for preventing transmission. Because UNI cannot

enforce certain behaviors, it falls upon each of us to make responsible and informed decisions on our own. It is my hope that we choose to act in the best interest of our community, and the health and safety of not only ourselves – but others. This means getting vaccinated if you are able to do so, limiting unnecessary exposure, and wearing a mask when indoors. This far into the pandemic, putting a mask back on can feel like a step backwards, but it is precisely these actions that will help us get back to being a community free to gather, socialize, and live without fear. I understand how tiring it has been living through this, and I know we are all burnt out in one way or another. Hope can feel difficult to come by these days, but I assure you that it is not hopeless. Know that faculty, staff and students at UNI have been working tirelessly all summer to ensure you would be able to have the best experience possible. Also know that there are resources available to help get you
Hello Panthers, I hope you all have had a safe and joyful summer break after what was a challenging school year for many. To say the past year was tough would be an understatement; it tested the limits of our strength and resilience, so I wish that you all were able to find some reprieve from that stress in the last few months. I know many of us were excited to come to campus this fall knowing that many of the experiencesCOVID-19 had us alter, postpone or forgo completely could be able to make a comeback. H o w e v e r , with the emerging information involving the Delta variant, I know many of us are also apprehensive about our return – especially given that a few of the preventative measures that were in place last year will no longer be in effect. I feel it necessary to help you all to understand why that is, as well as let you know what UNI is doing to ensure the continual protection of

Advice To New Students COLIN HORNING
Opinion Columnist
Coming into college can be quite a stressful experience – believe me, I lived it too when I was a freshman in the fall of 2018 (which seems like a decade ago). You’re away from home for perhaps the first time in your life, in a brand new town or even state, and your close friends from high school all went their separate ways.
My biggest piece of advice is to get involved. There’s no better way to find a new social circle, career opportunities and resume builders than to get involved with a student organization at UNI. Karla De Bruin
Pictured is Colin Horning, the sports editor & opinon columnist for the Northern Iowan newspaper.
It can be daunting and even a bit scary, but there
is a piece of advice that I have to new UNI students (I think I know a thing or two about it, since that was me not too long ago). I can almost guarantee that this campus has something for you. Find something that peaks your interests or something that aligns with your major. This way, you’ll discover something you’re truly passionate about and will meet others around campus who share the same interests and ambitions as you. Whether you’re into sports, arts & entertainment, video games, accounting or anything else under the sun, UNI will have a student organization that is a good fit for you. Perhaps the worst thing to do – in my opinion – is to stay cooped up in your dorm all year long and expose yourself to the campus and community around you. One of the things I challenge new and returning students to do is to make weekly goals. It can either
be meeting new friends or attending events. Make weekly goals and find how you can use the resources at UNI into achieving their goals. UNI has helped me achieve my goals within my career and outside of my career. Also I learned how to network and got the chance to attend conferences. Networking is very important at UNI, whether connecting with a professor or students around campus. One day one of your classmates could be hiring you in a future job, and to have that connection early on may put your foot in the door. I challenge everyone to make weekly goals. Finding a organization that sparks your interest and expressing your career goals to a friend, professor or even career services. The University of Northern Iowa is here to help you be successful in the long run and provide a valuable experience.

Honoring Cultural Heritage with the Meskwaki Nation ALAYNA VANTIGER
Campus Life Editor
On Tuesday, Aug. 24, the University of Northern Iowa and the Meskwaki Nation co-hosted a public celebration in honor of the new cooperative mission between the two entities. The mission between UNI and the Meskwaki Nation includes members of the Sac and Fox Tribe of the Mississippi in Iowa among other indigenous groups. Geared toward acknowledging the cultural history of the land which UNI rests upon, the mission is scheduled to be released by Indigenous Peoples’ Day in October.
The Tuesday event featured a performance by world champion fancy dancer Larry Yazzie of the Meskwaki Nation. This event coincided with the opening of a brand new exhibition at the UNI Gallery of Art. This collection, co-curated by Angela Wadeskik, highlights artwork by Native and Indigenous artists. Some of these works include “The Earth Is a House of Stories” which draws from the permanent collection and incorporates art by George Longfish (Seneca/ Tuscarora), Jaune Quickto-See (Salish/Kootenai), Duane Slick (Meskwaki), Percy Tsiete Sandy (Zuni) and Sheila Arch (Cherokee).
UNITED FACULTY
continued from page 1
“I would like to believe that UNI would do everything in their power to make faculty and students feel safe,” Bennett said. “It’s just, we can’t necessarily. It is very frustrating on both sides of that conversation, because we don’t want to overstep and do things we’re not supposed to and lose state grants and funding. Then it puts us almost in a worse spot. We’re not as able to provide resources
and support to people.” Ultimately the university is highly encouraging faculty and students to get vaccinated if not already, and free vaccination clinics will be held in the Student Health Center every Thursday from 1-3p.m. and Friday from 9-11a.m. every week available by appointment or walk in. Summer 2021 Blockbuster Film Reviews HUNTER FREISEN Film Critic
After the world being upside down for over a year, this past summer saw a slight return to normalcy. Instead of being hunkered down in our houses, we were able to venture outside and socialize (with a few restrictions here and there). One of the best social activities that was lost during the pandemic was seeing a movie in the cinema. It’s a communal experience that can’t be matched, even with the best technology available for in-home entertainment. Some films even combined the best of both worlds by releasing simultaneously in theaters and online, a move illustrating the seismic effect the pandemic has had on how we consume entertainment. Listed below are my thoughts on the new films I was able to see over the summer break. “Army of the Dead” (1/5) With enough material to cover a quarter of its 148-minute runtime, “Army of the Dead” is a painful example of the subjectivity of filmmaking. Even with dialogue and entire sequences ripped straight from “Aliens,” Zack Snyder’s film can’t produce even an ounce of the gory thrills that Cameron delivered in 1986. The story is predictable and uninteresting with Snyder forgetting about it from time to time as he crams
in a litany of poorly judged needle drops. How can a heist movie with a zombie tiger be so boring?!?! And how can a movie with a $100 million budget look so ugly? Filmed with cameras he bought off eBay (true story), Snyder’s soft cinematography is an absolute eyesore as you constantly strain to make out what’s happening within the blurry shallowness that is the frame. I’ve seen clearer quality on a Fisher-Price camera. “Black
Widow”
(2.5/5)
I would never label a Marvel film as “uninteresting” (except for the first two “Thor” installments) but this needless chapter gets close. While the MCU has never revolutionized the wheel in terms of storytelling, there at least has always been a sense of discovery and progression. “Black Widow” only spins its wheels doling out the same tired formula that has continually plagued the solo installments of the ever-expanding universe. Director Cate Shortland embraces the spy genre but doesn’t offer anything interesting with the unlimited budget and talent at her disposal, with her greatest sin being the absolute wasting of Ray Winstone as one of the most pathetic MCU villains (already a low bar to begin with). Fortunately, the
introduction of Florence Pugh as Yelena offers some semblance of hope in this new age of heroes. “The Suicide Squad” (3/5) Jumping ship from Marvel to DC, James Gunn’s “The Suicide Squad” is a much more cohesive enjoyable film compared to David Ayer’s 2016 version. There’s a lot to respect here as Warner Brothers seem to slowly be learning their lesson and letting filmmakers do what they were hired to do. Apart from just adding the “the” in the title, Gunn takes a celebratory stance towards the craziness of this concept where supervillains are tasked with performing missions for the U.S. government in return for not having their heads blown off. Gunn still shoots a low percentage with the jokes, many of which are retreaded several times to lesser effect. And the whole thing dissolves into a CGI mess in the third act. Still, this DC property was much more memorable than what Marvel was able to offer.

But even with the talent the all-time best openings to a musical. Jon M. Chu of Chu and his cast, “In the Heights” can’t reach the heights (sorry, the pun was too easy) of the musicals mentioned earlier. Much of that problem comes from the source material itself, which places too many characters within the narrative and doesn’t provide enough depth to create a genuine connection. The characters of Benny, Nina and Sonny are those that come to mind, with Benny and Nina’s romance lacking the passion one would expect. “The Green Knight” (3.5/5) C o m b i n i n g t h e

mythological deconstruction of “The Old Man & the Gun” and the meditative pacing of “A Ghost Story,” David Lowery’s “The Green Knight” is both a modern update and classical homage to the tale of Sir Gawain. Lowery’s visual direction reaches new heights as he parades shot after shot of cinematic beauty. The slow pacing allows the visuals and narrative to unfold in their own time, producing a thick atmosphere of brutality and bravery. That pacing also makes for a strenuous viewing experience and a divide between the fantastical and grounded elements of the story. But in the moments those two elements come together, such as the astounding finale, the result is pure magic.

The offense wasn’t at all slowed down by the halftime break. Just 14 seconds into the second half, Siri Ott put a shot into the net, extending the lead to 4-0. This was followed up by a 50th minute goal from Heinsch, her second of the match, and an 80th minute goal from Lily Caso. Excellent work from the Panther defense kept Viterbo out of the scoring column, and UNI came away with their first victory of the year, 6-0. From the opening kick to the final whistle, the Panthers had full control of the match. They attempted 30 shots, 14 of which were on goal with six finding the back of the net. Viterbo, on the other hand, attempted only
two shots, one of which was on goal. The goalkeepers weren’t forced to work too hard in this one, with Caitlin Richards making the only save of the match. Twenty-three total Panthers saw time on the field in this blowout win. In their third match of the year, the Panthers traveled to St. Thomas, Minn. on Tuesday for a match up with the University of St. Thomas Tommies. The defense and goalkeeping from both teams was fantastic as neither team managed to score. Through the full 90 minutes of regulation, as well as 20 minutes of overtime, neither side put a goal in the net, and the match ended in a 0-0 draw. The

before their final non-conference tournament in Milwaukee, Wis. against Marquette, Wright State and Texas-San Antonio from Sept. 17-18. According to junior opposite hitter Inga Rotto, Coach Petersen schedules these tough pre-season tournaments to strengthen the team before conference play. “I think that’s always been the way that Bobbi has scheduled the pre-season tournaments,” said Rotto. “She really tries to make sure we get that tough competition right off the bat, which is something that drew me to UNI. I’ve always loved it. I think it definitely prepares us for the MVC, where we have really high expectations for ourselves this year. It’s the best way for us to figure out
who we are as a team while also getting some great competition,” added Rotto. Last year’s young Panther squad made some great strides throughout the year, which was especially notable considering all of the strange circumstances such as playing a spring season and playing in arenas with few or no fans in the stands. As an older member of the team, Rotto says she noticed a lot of positive improvements throughout last year. “It was a new season for everybody, so there might have been a steep learning curve at the beginning. We didn’t have any of those pre-season tournaments to help us establish goals, either. But I think everybody figured out their role and stepped
up in a really good way,” said Rotto. UNI was picked to finish sixth in the preseason MVC rankings, with Illinois State the early-season number one pick, followed by Drake and Loyola at numbers two and three, respectively. The Panthers’ first home game is on Sept. 15 against Iowa State. They will begin Missouri Valley Conference play on Sept. 24 against Bradley University, which is the first of a three-game homestand for them. The final home game and regular season game will be on Nov. 20 against Loyola, with the Missouri Valley Conference Tournament scheduled to begin on Thursday, Nov. 25 in Normal, Ill.
COLLEGE FOOTBALL
College football storylines to watch for in 2021 HUNTER FRIESEN
Sports Writer Week 0 of College Football is nearly upon us as Nebraska and Illinois will open the season on Aug. 28. Nearly 130 programs from all over the country will compete for a coveted playoff spot and a shot at the National Championship, which Alabama will look to defend after completing a perfect 2020 season (13-0) on route to their 18th title. Before the ball is kicked off in Champaign, let’s take a look at five notable storylines surrounding this upcoming season. COVID-19 and the Return to Normalcy
The 2020 season was one of chaos and disarray as no one seemed to be on the
same page, including the Big Ten playing a truncated conference-only season and the FCS moving the entirety of its schedule to the spring. There were also no fans to fill some of the 100,000 capacity stadiums. With vaccination rates higher than what they were a year ago, fans will be allowed back inside, and there will be fewer instances of forfeits over safety protocols. With the rise of the Delta variant, it remains to be seen how normal this season will be. A New Season for the Panthers
Speaking of COVID-19, the Panthers had some trouble with that in the spring as starting QB Will McElvain missed two weeks due to quarantine. Fortunately, he’ll be back in full force with a stronger receiving core and an offensive scheme with a more robust play-action
selection. Since they finished with a disappointing 3-4 record in the spring, the Panthers start ranked No. 21 in the FCS preseason poll, which will produce an underdog mentality that they will need as they open the season against in-state rivals Iowa State on Sept. 4. Can Iowa State Live Up to Expectations?
Coming off a 9-3 campaign that included a resounding Fiesta Bowl win over Oregon, the Cyclones are entering this season ranked No. 7 in the AP Top 25, their highest preseason ranking ever. Often the underdogs throughout their 124year history, Matt Campbell’s team is now the one to beat in the Big 12. The question will be how they react to the unfamiliar spotlight. With returning star players such as quarterback
Brock Purdy, tight end Charlie Kolar and running back Breece Hall, they have a legitimate shot to break Oklahoma’s streak of six consecutive conference titles.
Oklahoma and Texas Split from the Big 12
The Big 12 lost both of its top teams over the summer as Oklahoma and Texas will be leaving for the greener (financial) pastures of the SEC. The move won’t be official until June 2025, but there are some rumblings that it could happen much sooner. In response, the Big Ten, ACC and PAC12 announced an alliance, although no details have been announced. This leaves the Big 12 in a tight situation as they will have to fight for relevancy or be forced to go the way of the dinosaur. One sure thing is
that Big 12 fans will have their pitchforks ready when OU and UT visit town. Small Programs on the Rise
With the pandemic taking out some of the bigger teams in 2020, smaller programs such as BYU and Coastal Carolina made the most of their opportunity by each finishing with an 11-1 record and within the Top 15. Both of those teams have great expectations this season as they will play under brighter lights. The Louisiana Ragin’ Cajuns finished 10-1 in 2020 and seem poised to repeat that success in 2021 as they retained nearly every starter. And while not as small as those just mentioned, the North Carolina Tar Heels are entering this season ranked No. 10, their highest since 1997. They look to be Clemson’s biggest threat in the ACC.
