Welcome back Welcome back, Panthers! Whether this is your first semester on campus or your last, the editorial staff at the Northern Iowan would like to welcome you to the University of Northern Iowa. As you settle into your routines for the semester, each of our editorial staff members have answered some questions for you about UNI and college life in general. Happy reading, and we wish you all the best with this upcoming school year. What is one piece of advice about college that you wish you could have given to your younger self? Gabrielle Leitner, Executive Editor: My best piece of college advice is to try new things. It’s okay to try something and not like it. Some of the most fun events that I’ve been to at UNI were events that I don’t think I would have ever gone to on my own, but working at the NI and going out on assignments has opened me up to trying new things. Gabriella Cummings, Art Director: There will be times where you are uncomfortable or don’t know what you’re doing; don’t let them scare you. Whether it’s classes, social events in your hall or even just eating by yourself between classes, often you just need to do it. Once you are more comfortable on campus, you can start to relax and enjoy the next four years a little more. Elizabeth Kelsey, News Editor: It can be easier to make friends by going to activities or events based around topics you like, rather than just relying on your dorm floor. For me, it was campus ministry and dance, but there are countless clubs, orgs and intramurals. You’ll have at least one

value in common with the people there (faith, soccer skills, a love of The Office, etc.), and shared values, rather than merely shared living spaces, make connection easier and spark more permanent friendships. Sofia Legaspi, Campus Life Editor: Savor every moment. I remember lying in my dorm bed my first night as a freshman, scared and homesick, thinking “There’s no way I can do this for four years.” But here I am, starting my senior year, looking back on my college experience and wishing that those four years had lasted longer. For many people, this is the time of their life where they meet their closest friends, make their best memories, learn their most impactful life lessons, and discover who they are. The time f lies by and it’s not going to last forever — enjoy it! Jacob Potter, Sports Editor: The best advice I could give to my younger self coming into college is to get involved in clubs and organizations. Getting involved is the best way to meet new people. Making new friends will make UNI feel like a home away from home. There really is a club for everybody. Cecilia Mitchell, Copy Editor: If I could give one piece of advice about college to my former self, it would be to relax and enjoy the ride. Yes, you may be swamped with homework and responsibilities at times during college, or you may go through some trials with life, but college is the only time where you can exist surrounded by so many friends and opportunities for advancement and growth. Rainbow Reception welcomes students ELIZABETH KELSEY News Editor

More than 400 students and community members attended the annual Rainbow Reception, hosted by UNI Gender and Sexuality Services. The event, which took place at GallagherBluedorn Performing Arts Center from 5-7 p.m. on Wednesday, August 28, was open to all LGTQ+ individuals and allies who wanted to celebrate with the community. “Coming to UNI’s campus is the first time that [many students] have an LGBTQ+ community, the first time that it’s okay to be open as identifying as LGBTQ+ or being an out ally,” said Emily Harsch, Gender and Sexuality Services Coordinator. “This is kind of a big kickoff to celebrate our community, celebrate our allies, get everyone together, and get connected before the school year happens.” Among the many organizations present were on-campus resources such as UNI Proud, Student Accessibility Services, NI Feminists, and the department of Women and Gender Studies. Off-campus groups were also present, including clinical resources from Unity

Point Health and even information from presidential campaigns such as those of Pete Buttigieg and Kamala Harris. “We are trying to be on campus as much as possible and… trying to reach out to every possible student group,” said Daniel Roth, a representative of the Harris campaign’s Panthers for Harris initiative. “[Kamala] has been so strong on [LGBTQ+ issues] since she joined public life, and it’s something that we want people to know about.” Local churches also offered support for LGBTQ+ students. “Jesus’ message was one of love and inclusiveness,” said Louise Odle, a representative of St. Timothy’s United Methodist Church. “We’re trying to be that kind of church as closely as we possibly can be.” Junior biology major Emerson Slomka, a transfer student new to UNI this fall, was excited by the variety of local resources available for LGBTQ+ individuals. “I transferred from a really small area, and as a transgender person, there really wasn’t a lot of resources for us or ways to meet other LGBT

2

people,” he said. “This was a good way both to get resources and to meet new people who face similar issues.” Midway through the event, key student and faculty leaders addressed the attendees. Among them was Dr. Thomas Davis, retired professor of health promotion, who recently donated an endowed scholarship for transgender students. The scholarship was inspired by Davis’ friendship with a UNI alumnus who identifies as transgender. Through that friendship, Harsch said, Davis “learned about some of the struggles that people face in their everyday lives and realized that he had the potential to do something about it by supporting our students.” To be eligible for the Thomas M. Davis Endowed Scholarship, students must self-identify as transgender either in the Admissions Application or through MyUNIverse. They must also have one semester of college credit. According to the Gender and Sexuality Services website, the student with the highest GPA will be selected. For the 2019-2020 academic year, all students who have

self-identified as transgender through one of the above methods by September 8th will be considered. In future years, the scholarship will be included as part of the general UNI scholarship application. “This is the biggest donation that we’ve ever received in support of our transgender students, and it’s a huge deal that it’s happening on our campus,” Harsch said. After the presentations, attendees continued to socialize, visit booths, and enjoy snacks provided by UNI Catering. “The energy and enthusiasm of the college students has been wonderful,” said Odle.

In addition to LGBTQ+ individuals, Harsch emphasized the event’s importance for allies: those who may not identify as LGBTQ+ but want to support and advocate for those who do. She noted that there are many ways for allies to connect with the LGBTQ+ community on campus, including a Safe Zone Ally training which Gender and Sexuality Services will be implementing later this semester. “LGBTQ+ pride also does include allies,” Slomka agreed. “If we separate straight cisgender people from LGBTQ+ people, there’s not really a way to communicate or to learn things from each other.”

Top tips for incoming students AUGUST 29, 2019 |

SAMANTHA GOODMAN Opinion Writer

The transition from high school to college can be difficult for some and easier for others. No matter where you are on the spectrum, it is best to admit that you simply don’t know everything. After my freshman year, I concluded the following tips were essential to a positive experience for newcomers at UNI. No. 1: Get out of your room. Whether you live in the dorms, at home or in an apartment, you are not going to meet others by

staying in bed. Challenge yourself to set a goal of making five new friends this semester — on your floor, in your classes, in an organization or anywhere. You never know where you can meet someone, but you won’t meet anyone if you don’t try. No. 2: Get involved on campus. You will hear this in almost every lecture and read it on most every flyer, and for good reason. UNI offers more than 100 on-campus organizations that you can become involved in and there is certainly one — or more — for

you. Interested in rugby? UNI has that. Want to be involved in sword-fighting? Check. How about painting? Yes. It’s all right here. Contact someone you know who is in an organization, or locate their website to get involved. Many organizations have weekly meetings or practices that will help to strengthen your desired skills and offer opportunities including traveling, listening to guest speakers, performing and much more. No. 3: Call your parents. Yes, you are “independent” now and you may not “need your parents.” However, your parents still

need you. They nurtured you almost every day of your life for the last 18 years, so your trip to college is also a transition for them. Make an effort to call them weekly. If that is too much commitment for you, then text occasional updates on your life. They will appreciate you keeping them involved. No. 4: Eat at the dining center.

Executive editor welcomes students Hello Panthers! Welcome back to another year at UNI. I want to wish an especially warm welcome to new students: I am so glad you are here with us this year. I am extremely excited for the new school year (as my fellow NI staff members can attest, I have been sending them emails exclaiming my excitement for school and work since the beginning of August). Back to school time is one of my favorite times of the year. I love getting my school supplies and backpack all ready for me to continue learning, as well as seeing my friends. Back to school time in college is especially fun because I get to come back to Cedar Falls, see my friends and continue my education at this fine institution. Of course, this summer has been full of news on the local, state, national and international levels and I spent most of my time diligently reading stories and designing pages as a copy editor intern at the Dubuque Telegraph Herald. Prior to becoming the executive editor of the NI, I was a photographer and held the art director position for the past year and a half. I hope with my experience that I am able

to bring the best quality of content to you over the next two semesters. I vividly remember my first interaction with the Northern Iowan. I dragged my mom to the bookstore on my first college visit to purchase my new UNI wardrobe, since I took little convincing that UNI was where I belonged. While we were checking out, I saw a stack of newspapers at the register and the cashier said I could take one. I started looking at the paper in the car on our way home and I knew I had to get involved. I found that copy of the Northern Iowan while I was cleaning my room this summer and would be lying if I said it didn’t make me emotional. See WELCOME, page 5

ADVICE

What is your favorite thing about UNI? GL: I don’t think I could pick just one thing that is my favorite! I love campus and taking walks and enjoying the architecture and foliage. I’ve met so many nice people through school and I’ve had a lot of great professors that make me excited about learning. And, of course, the Northern Iowan and everyone that works here hold a very special place in my heart. GC: Living in the dorms may seem like a strange “favorite thing” to some people but I stand by it. Sharing the small room on the second floor of Rider with the random girl I met on Panther Picks led to me making my best friend at UNI along with so many other great memories and lots of naps. EK: I always say it’s just enough but not too much. The campus size is just big enough to offer really great opportunities in terms of classes, internships, and other academic and professional experiences, but still small enough that you get to know so many students and professors by name. I also love hearing the Campanile play as I walk to class... and our campus squirrels are the best around! SL: The people. No. 5: Stay on campus on the weekends. The first few weekends, especially if you haven’t made close friends yet, can be challenging. This is why you should challenge yourself to get out and explore the campus and town. Cedar Falls has so much to discover that you won’t appreciate it until you search around. Main Street is home to cute coffee shops, unique boutiques, delicious restaurants and mouth-watering bakeries. Looking for entertainment? You will find a few movie theaters in town, shopping outlets and bowling alleys. Don’t want to spend money? Then take a walk around campus, hang up a hammock and read a book or find out if any programs are being held. Many organizations host events to invite and introduce new people to what they have to offer. If you live in a dorm, check out what your residence association has to offer. No. 6: Create relationships with professors. Your college professors will help and care for you if you create the appropriate relationships. They can guide you in what classes to take for your major, and they know the inside scoop on other professors and course content. Your professors can write letters of recommendation for you, or even help you apply for scholarships.

Many professors teach multiple courses. If you already know his or her teaching style, criteria or personality, you have a leg up on others taking the class. And, maybe most importantly, your professors can provide a shoulder to lean on. We all need advice sometimes. No. 7: Most importantly, don’t think you are too cool to be a freshman. Every college student was a freshman at one point in time. Own the title and make the most of your first year of college. Just remember, your future is in your hands.

CME launches year with BBQ AUGUST 29, 2019 |

The Center for Multicultural Education (CME) kicked off the new school year with their annual Welcome Back BBQ on Monday, Aug. 26. The event ran from 5 to 9 p.m. in the Maucker Union Coffeehouse.

“It is really great to have students back on campus,” UNI President Mark Nook told the crowd as the barbecue began. “It’s so quiet over the summer, and college campuses shouldn’t be that quiet. So welcome back; I hope you guys have a great school year.” “And for freshman and

transfer students who are new to this university,” Nook said, “make as many friends as you can. Start tonight. Figure out some of these clubs; meet some people around here.” The evening provided many opportunities for both new and returning students to make connections. Students enjoyed food from a variety of cultures, including empanadas, sopapillas and halal burgers, as well as frozen treats and Insomnia cookies. Attendees also saw performances from student groups such as Latinx organizations Lambda Theta Phi and Lambda Theta Alpha and dance groups The Movement and

International Dance Theatre (IDT) Dance Company. Many of these performing organizations and others hosted information tables throughout the evening. Tabling groups included ThreeHouse: A Wesley Foundation, Black Student Union, the Northern Iowa Feminists and others. Overall, the evening maintained a party atmosphere as students cheered for performers, played giant checkers and Jenga and enjoyed free food and music. At one point, a large group gathered on the dance floor to do the Cupid Shuffle. “We are so glad that you are here, that you have cho-

If there is anything, absolutely anything, that we can do to support you, please let us know, okay? We’ll be here for you.” The office of Diversity, Inclusion, and Social Justice encompasses three departments: the CME, Gender & Sexuality Services and Military & Veteran Student Services. All offices are located on the plaza level of the Maucker Union.

Students moving back to the Cedar Falls area for the fall semester may notice several new businesses opening up in the area. While some have just recently opened for business, others will soon be available for the general public to enjoy. Whether you’re looking for a new thrill or some sweet treats, the Cedar Falls area may have the new store that you’re looking for. Driftless Style is a home decor store that is based on a partnership purchasing model. According to the “Our Mission” page on their website, this means that your purchase will go towards the support of the artists who made their furniture and goods. One of their goals as a company is to promote cultural diversity through the work that they sell. As an additional bonus to shopping at their store, 5% of the money you spend will go to a charitable organization such as the Red Cross or One Tree Planted. Driftless Style is located on 106 Main Street, and their hours are Thursday from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m., Friday 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. and Saturday 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Those looking to indulge their sweet tooth can visit the Cedar City Creamery on 110 Lincoln Street. Along with shakes and malts, customers can purchase specialty treats including banana splits and green apple sundaes. In addition to these items, there are also cookies and other varieties of food and drink. The store is open from 10 a.m. until 10 p.m. Juices, pastries and salads will also be available to those who visit the Farm Shed eatery and pantry. Founded by Jenette Weinberger, Farm Shed is a place where customers can watch the chefs create fresh baked goods and juices. This location opened around the middle of June at 119 Main Street in Cedar Falls. One of the main goals of the restaurant is to work with local farmers to provide produce for their salads

Panthers play exhibition matches in Italy JACOB POTTER

Sports Editor

The men’s basketball team embarked on an opportunity of a lifetime as they traveled to Italy this summer to play three exhibition games, and to experience all that Italy has to offer. “We were a little bit loose with some things as you might expect after you spend time touring around Venice or on the bus to get to Rome,” head coach Ben Jacobson said. UNI went 3-0 on the trip, defeating Baskethood, 108-75, in the first game in Verona, Italy. Following their first matchup, the team traveled to Vicenza, Italy, to take on the Vicenza AllStars. The Panthers would best

their previous 33-point victory with a 101-64 rout. The Purple and Gold traveled to Rome for their third matchup finishing undefeated on the trip. Aside from the games, the Panthers were able to experience the sights of Italy. “To spend one day going to the Colosseum and getting a guided tour there,” Jacobson said. “The next day you go to the Vatican and get a guided tour. To be able to learn about those two places. We spent an afternoon in Venice walking around and seeing that, and an afternoon/evening in Florence. So, to be able to really touch on the cultural spots and learn about a number of those places is something that might be a

once in a lifetime deal, and to experience it together as a team. That part of it is really awesome.” One of Jacobson’s main takeaways from the trip is the importance of team bonding. “The best part of the trip is the camaraderie and spending time together … You see each other in a little bit of a different light,” Jacobson said. “We learned some things about the players. The players learned some things about us as coaches. That dynamic was really good on this trip.” The Panthers have experience and chemistry heading into the 2019-20 season with 10 returning players. “We’ve got a different expe-

rience level than what we had a year ago, and you can see that in our guys,” Jacobson said. “They’ve just got a much better understanding a year into our new offense and a year play-

ing together. We miss Wyatt [Lohaus]. We miss Miles [Wentzien], but the rest of them they’ve all played together and you can see that on this trip.”

Panthers set to take on the Cyclones COLIN HORNING

Sports Writer

Returning to the field for the first time since last year’s second-round playoff defeat, the Panther football team will look to start the season off strong against 21st ranked Iowa State in Ames on Saturday at 11 a.m. on Fox Sports One. Head coach Mark Farley knows the challenge that is ahead giving high praise to this year’s Cyclones. “We’ve played a lot of Cyclone teams, and this is the best one that we’ve played,” Farley said. “It’s a challenge. If you’re not experienced you’ll be experienced coming out of the game. It’ll be a quick learning curve. We have to go in there and find out where we’re at, but have our team prepared to take on some very talented players.” The Purple and Gold are returning 16 starters from last season’s playoff campaign; eight on the offensive end and eight on defense. Pre-season All-American tight end Briley Moore led the Panthers in receiving yardage last year with 536 yards, and looks to lead a strong receiving core again this season. Each of the top six receivers from last season will be returning, which figures to make life a little bit easier for redshirt freshman quarterback Will McElvain, who is coming into the season with no experience as a starter. He will be replacing three-year starter Eli Dunne, and will look to usher in a new era under center for the Panthers. The defensive attack starts up front on the line. “Our defensive line is the strength of our defense going into the first football game,” Farley said.

“Our interior tackles [Tim] Butcher, [Jared] Brinkman and Christian Boyd. I mean we’re strong inside. They’re doing a good job. Our perimeter is good with enough depth as well. We have Elerson Smith, Seth Thomas and Brawantae Wells.” First-team all-MVC cornerback Xavior Williams will anchor the defensive backfield with the season-ending injury of defensive back Korby Sander, who was second on the defense in tackles with 93 along with three interceptions. The linebackers will have to step up to make up for the loss of Sander’s 93 tackles. The Panthers may have what they are looking for in transfer linebacker Spencer Cuvelier from Iowa Central. Cuvelier racked up 96 tackles, 22 tackles for loss, four sacks and three forced fumbles last season at Iowa Central. “What came together for us this fall was the development of Spencer Cuvelier,” Farley said. “If he can continue to remain healthy and continue the growth that I’ve seen in camp he can be a great addition to our football team. We have [Bryce] Flater battling [Chris] Kolarevic when he comes back for the other position. The one that really stabilizes our linebacker core is Cuvelier.” While Farley is impressed with Cuvelier, pairing the transfer with Kolarevic, who had 65 tackles last season, will make for a strong linebacking core. Should the Panthers pull off the upset on Saturday, Farley would rack up his 150th career win. Farley already holds the most wins in UNI football and Missouri Valley Conference history. His next win would put him as one of only ten coaches in FCS football history to reach 150 wins.

Panthers start season at Texas against Longhorns PATRICK HANSEN

Sports Writer

The Panther volleyball team will get to start their season off with a long road trip deep in the heart of Texas for a three-game series over the weekend. Ranked 33rd nationally, the Panthers will venture down to Austin, Texas to play the fourth-ranked Texas Longhorns on Friday night in the first matchup between the two in school history. It will be a family affair against the Longhorns as UNI coach and daughter duo, Bobbi and Baylee Petersen will face off against Sydney Petersen, their daughter and sister respectively. Following the matchup against the Longhorns, the Panthers will

travel south to San Marcos, Texas. The purple and gold will start out with a matchup against Liberty (Virginia) on Saturday. Following their matchup with Liberty, the Panther women will be taking on the home team Texas State Bobcats on Saturday night to round out the three-game slate. The Panthers return five out of six starters from last season. The purple and gold were also unanimously voted the number one team in the Missouri Valley Conference preseason poll. Of the fifteen times the Panther women have been voted the number one preseason team, they have gone on to win the conference championship eleven times and secured second place four times.

Top 5 players to watch this season FOOTBALL/OPINION

JACOB POTTER

Sports Editor

QB Will McElvain McElvain, a redshirt freshman, earned the starting quarterback spot replacing graduate Eli Dunne. “We felt that Will overall is the best at this time to go into this football game [against Iowa State],” head coach Mark Farley said. Farley also said that McElvain has a very talented arm. Senior wide receiver Jaylin James also sees promise in the young quarterback. “With Will, if he gets out of the pocket the play is never dead,” James said. “He can scramble really well, but he keeps the ball alive and keeps his eyes downfield.” McElvain was one of the best high school quarterbacks in Iowa. Albeit, it is high school, but the Des Moines native led the state in total offense as a senior at Lincoln High School. McElvain averaged 270 passing yards, 115 rushing yards and 4.5 touchdowns per game during his career at Lincoln. Time will tell if McElvain can convert his talent into game

action.

TE Briley Moore One of McElvain’s top targets will be the 6-foot-4, 249pound tight end Briley Moore, who has garnered the attention of several NFL scouts during fall camp. Moore led the Panthers in receiving yards last season with 536 yards at a clip of 14 yards per catch along with four touchdowns. “Briley Moore is, by all means, one of the better tight ends in the FCS, if not the best one in the FCS,” Farley said. The senior tight end was elected to the first-team allMVC team for his performance last season, along with being named a team captain. Coach Farley envisions Moore continuously improving to get to the next level. “He has to challenge himself,” Farley said. “I wish I had a guy here to challenge him for his position. It’d make him better. Elias Nissen made him better last year ... That’s why I wish I had that one guy to push him day in and day out. “He still has to do what I call chase the ghost. He has to

chase the guy that’s better than him. The guy that will be better than him that’s across from him.”

DB Xavior Williams Junior cornerback Xavior Williams leads the Panther secondary after a strong sophomore season. The Burlington, Iowa native had four interceptions (one pick-six) along with 42 tackles to earn a spot on the first-team all-MVC team. “Everyone’s going to talk about Xavior Williams coming back,” Farley said. “He’s gotta step his game up. I feel good about him.” Williams also returned 16 kicks for 400 yards at an average of 25 yards per kick return.

defense for the Panthers. “Trevor is like his brother A.J.,” Farley said. “A.J. really stepped forward in the last couple years, but now that A.J. is gone Trevor has really taken more of a role for whatever reason. Now that his brother is gone he can be more of a voice than before. I’m excited for Trevor. I think Trevor is a great tailback.” DE Elerson Smith On the defensive line, 6-foot7, 245-pound defensive end Elerson Smith is a pass rusher

RB Trevor Allen Behind 1000-yard rusher Marcus Weymiller, Trevor Allen racked up 649 yards and five touchdowns at a clip of 4.6 yards per carry. Allen will be the feature back now that Weymiller graduated. Farley also sees the senior back as a leader after learning from his brother A.J., who graduated after playing four years on

SOCCER

PATRICK HANSEN

Sports Writer

The women’s soccer team started their season off on the right foot, defeating Chicago State, 5-0, at home on Aug. 22. This was only the second meeting between the two programs with the Panthers also taking the first matchup in 2017 by the same score of 5-0. UNI was able to record a rare accomplishment in the game against Chicago State as five different Panthers found the back of the net. The Purple and Gold wasted no time as they scored their first goal just two minutes into the game off an assist by Madalyn Germann setting up Jamie Althiser for the goal. Four minutes passed until the Panthers grabbed the early 2-0 lead just six minutes into the game with Sydney Hayden recording the second goal. Jordyn Rolli also scored in the first half at the 37-minute mark extending the lead to a commanding three-point margin. The second half opened up with scoring early. Germann added to her assist by finding the back of the net on a penalty kick in the 49th minute. The Purple and Gold finished their 5-0 rout of Chicago State as

Sophia Conant scored the final goal for the Panthers. Following the game with Chicago State, the Panther women traveled to Iowa City to take on the Hawkeyes on Aug. 25. The Panthers allowed two quick goals to the Hawkeyes, but were able to find the net as Rolli closed the deficit to just one goal. The Hawkeyes proved to be too much to handle as they would go on to score two more goals in the first half and two in the second to take down the Panthers, 6-1. Up next, the Panthers will take on the University of Nebraska-Omaha at home on Friday, Aug. 30.

to look out for. The Minneapolis native was second on the team in sacks with 7.5 behind graduate Rickey Neal Jr., who had 8.5 sacks. Smith also had 10.5 tackles for loss and one forced fumble. The junior defensive end adds to a strong defensive line. “Our defensive line is the strength of our defense,” Farley said. “We’re strong inside … and our perimeter is good with enough depth as well. We have Elerson Smith, Seth Thomas and Brawantae Wells.”
