INTERVIEWORLACHENNAOUI

Orla's a Good Sport

4

NW

INTERVIEWORLACHENNAOUI Orla Chennaoui hails from Draperstown, but now lives in London where she works as a reporter with Sky Sports. After a month on the road with the Giro d’Italia, Margaret Connolly caught up with Orla as she prepares to take a well-deserved break from her hectic schedule.

A

broadcaster with Sky Sports, Orla Chennaoui has just finished travelling around Europe to report for Sky Sports on the Giro d’Italia. ‘I have been on the road for a month reporting for Sky on the Giro and I was up from 6.30am until midnight everyday. Even on downtime when the cyclists weren’t racing, I was working with my team prepping and preparing scripts and stories. I have to say I was so proud during the Giro and while I knew what to expect in terms of reception and the friendliness of the people from Northern Ireland, seeing it through the eyes of my colleagues from England and the rest of Europe who were amazed by it all, it did blow me away. ‘Now that the Giro is over I do have a couple of weeks off and this gives me the chance to have some quality time with my husband, Mourad. Luckily, I have a very understanding husband who is fully supportive of my job and doesn’t mind me being away for long periods of time. We live near Portobello Market and I like wandering around here or losing myself in a good book - anything to slow down and switch off from the hectic pace I am used to when working. I also like to get home to Draperstown to see my family as often as I can.’ Orla has had a varied career in journalism and after studying Law with French at Queen’s University, Belfast and Rennes University in France, later moving on to Napier University in Edinburgh for her postgraduate degree in Journalism. Orla stayed in Edinburgh where she cut her teeth in print media before moving to work in radio and finally on TV with Sky when she joined as Northern Ireland Correspondant in 2006 and covered stories such as the Omagh bombing trial, the murder of former IRA member and British spy Dennis Donaldson, and the historic power sharing agreement which finally concluded the peace process in Northern Ireland. As Orla explains, ‘I always knew I wanted to be a journalist and with no set path into the industry I felt that Law was a good degree to take and one that would stand me in good stead for my future in news journalism. I then went on to do my Journalism postgrad at Napier in Edinburgh, where I progressed into my first job in print media with the Edinburgh Evening News and Scotland on Sunday. I then got the chance to try radio when I worked with 2 Ten FM in Reading before making the move into broadcast journalism

with Meridian TV in Southampton and then back to Edinburgh where I worked as a reporter with Scotland Today before getting the job of Northern Ireland Correspondent with Sky News. ‘I’m glad that I got to follow the conventional route to TV via print and radio because it gave me the chance to experience the different mediums and acquire skills in a time when you need so many strings to your bow. I would recommend this route to others wanting to get into TV today, print and radio definitely offers a good grounding. I would also say to anyone interested in a media career to be prepared to work really hard and not to expect things to happen overnight. You really have to love what you do and any experience no matter

by Aids. These are just two stories that I have been fortunate enough to cover, but there are many more and the positivity and inspiration they offer is why I went into journalism in the first place. Since making the move to the world of sports reporting I feel that I have found my niche, it suits me. ‘Reporting on London 2012 was definitely one of the high points of my career to date. The London Olympics and Paralympics was one of the most phenomenal experiences. I was working on stories for four years prior to the Games and then for their duration I basically spent the entire time living in the middle of it all at the Olympic Village. It was such a privilege to be there and report on all of the athletes’ achievements and helping to tell their inspirational stories. At

❝I have to say I was so proud during the Giro and while I knew what to expect in terms of reception and the friendliness of the people from Northern Ireland, seeing it through the eyes of my colleagues from England and all the rest of Europe, who were amazed by it all, it did blow me away.❞ how small is worthwhile, so make yourself indispensable and get on with people - it’s a close knit industry and you never know who you will meet along the way.’ After a year at home in Northern Ireland, Orla moved to the Sky News Centre in London in 2007, and covered the trial of serial killer Levi Bellfield, the 21/7 terror trials and the Iranian sailor hostage siege. When the role of Olympic Correspondent with Sky Sports came up Orla successfully secured the job and has remained as reporter with the channel, a job she feels really suits her. ‘I love working in sports broadcasting. I find sports news passionate, fun and energetic. It’s also very hard to really get your teeth into a story you would like to pursue when you are part of the 24-hour news team because there really isn’t the time, but I find I have more freedom to do this as a sports reporter. ‘As well as general sports reporting, you’d be surprised at how many emotive, human interest stories there are to be explored in the sporting world. For example, I was lucky enough to get to visit Palastine refugee camps in Jordan and witness the overwhelming difference sport was making for the people here. I also got to travel to Tanzania with Mark Cavendish to meet Aids sufferers and those orphaned

times I really had to pinch myself, I couldn’t believe I was reporting on such an awesome event that was captivating millions of people around the world who were tuning in to see our coverage. I will be reporting from Rio in 2016 and while I’m looking forward to this, I don’t think it can top the experience and atmosphere of London. ‘While there haven’t been many, there have been low points over the years. In my time with Sky News I covered a lot of distressing stories and had to liaise with the families of murder victims to tell the story. I have to admit I found this very hard to do because I don’t like any kind of voyeurism and in news reporting there is a very fine line. Like any industry there have also had to be cutbacks over the last few years, and it’s never nice when you have to say goodbye to colleagues when departments are restructured.’ So, any future ambitions? ‘It’s hard to know, I’ve never really had a set career path, I’ve always just worked hard and waited to see what comes up. I have had the chance over the years to turn my hand to presenting, but I still love the unpredictability and chaos of being out on the road reporting - perhaps in the future it would be nice to have the chance to do both on a regular basis - there’s no harm in wanting to have the best of both worlds!’

Airport Runway

Alessandra Ambrosio

If you're travelling abroad this summer make sure you cut it in the style stakes at the airport and follow the lead of our favourite supermodels who are always causing a stir every time they land and take off!

O

kay, so most of these beautiful women will be travelling first class and can slip into something more appropriate for their long haul flight once safely away from the prying lenses of the press! However, for the rest of us mere mortals travelling in the cheap seats, comfortable travelling attire doesn’t mean have to mean that you throw fashion totally out of the window. In fact, dressing with a bit of style could help you get a free upgrade!

allowances into account it’s better to wear weightier items), goes with a summer dress as easily as a pair of jeans and would be useful on chilly evenings while on holiday. T-shirt: A lightweight, cotton, silk or linen T-shirt means you’re comfortable and prepared for warmer weather when you step off the plane at your end destination.

The following six items, provide plenty of comfort plus a touch of style, for any jet-setting flyer’s wardrobe.

Scarf: A stylish accessory but also a practical cover-up. Opt for a large, washable scarf that’s large enough to double up as a wrap when it’s particularly chilly.

Jeans: Cotton denim jeans are the perfect smart casual travelling attire. Opt for those with a bit of stretch for greater comfort. Straight leg styles might be preferable to super skinny because tight clothing that might restrict blood flow through veins can incease the risk of Deep Vein Thrombosis (DVT). A pair of flight socks worn under your jeans will also help against DVT.

Ankle Boot: Again these look great with jeans and with summer dresses or denim shorts, are better worn than packed due to weight and space restrictions with your luggage and comfortable for walking to your boarding gate - some can prove quite a trek! Plus they are easily slipped on and off when passing through airport security.

Leather Jacket: Perfect for travelling between cooler and warmer climates. It’s easier worn than packed (taking baggage

A few of my Favourite things

With Elaine Peel Proprietor of Peel Boutique, Bloomfield Avenue

Rory local artikstwhose Bulloc are being paintingssioned as commis as South far away frica A

today are amazingly comfortable and quite flattering (given that I don`t have nice long legs). I have teamed them with a Moschino jacket to give the jacket a more casual look but I have also worn it over more formal black trousers and it works equally well. My broach is one of my favourites from my collection of both real and costume jewellery. (Jeans and jacket are both stocked in PeeL).

What do you wear most?

I mostly wear my favourite colour black! I do actually wear colour in the summer but I never veer too far away from black. This is a top and culottes from Okishi (formerly known as Ischiko) it is simple, understated, comfortable and I have just dressed it up with a Chanel `perfume bottle` necklace and a pair of high suede courts! In my shop I like to fade into the background `clothes wise` and black is always a great back drop! I do love adding colour through bright jackets, knits or scarves.

If I could only buy one fashion item this summer, what would it be?

A Kimono - this season you are spoiled for choice. MarcCain have a fabulous

How did you get into the retail industry?

By chance! Judi originally at 111 Bloomfield Avenue decided to return to New Zealand fourteen years ago and therefore the business was for sale. I always had a passion for fashion (inherited from my very stylish grandmother). At the time I was very happy with my career in the probation service but felt that this was an opportunity I didn't wish to pass over and so I took the plunge and haven't looked back since! I feel I have been very fortunate to have had two very different but fulfilling careers and who knows there might even be room for expansion!

Describe your style in a few words.

Well the word eclectic is now rather hackneyed so perhaps I'll say slightly bohemian but striving for elegance married with edgy! I definitely don't suit a classic look as I think one needs a great figure for that style and as I don't possess such a thing I tend to veer towards quirky, and then add classic in the form of my

16

signature pearls, a piece of statement jewellery a or hat. The secret of style is understanding what suits you, your proportions and your personality. Style is an outward expression of who you are and today we are fortunate to have such a range of 'looks and personas' to experiment with. One day I might like to be 'cool' and casual and another day aim for 1920’s elegance!

What are you wearing today?

It is fairly unusual for me to wear jeans and I do actually find it hard to get the “right fit”. The Citizens of Humanity jeans which I am wearing

brightly patterned orange and pink kimono but if vivid colour isn't your thing Isabel de Pedro have given us a beautifully light stone and black

AFEWOFMYFAVOURITETHINGS version. Kimonos are just the business for travelling as they pack up into the size of a handkerchief and provide just the right amount of coverage/colour to go over almost everything. You will wear it both at home and on holiday. I adore my vintage kimonos too and have worn them until they are almost threadbare over jeans, to formal dinners etc so grab a kimono and you'll have it forever.

it all the time. Sunglasses, can't drive without them.

Shoes or handbags?

Handbags every time!!!

I couldn't live without...

My fur coats in the winter and my boots, mostly black, flat and comfortable.

Favourite S/S'14 trend?

Colour, interesting prints and statement jewellery.

Favourite shop/brand

Well apart from my own shop of course I love browsing in Liberty in London and I am a great admirer of Bottega Veneta and Dries Van Noten and if budget permitted I would buy Chanel, Chanel and more Chanel.!

Past - Coco Chanel Present - Gwen Stefani and indeed some of my elegant customers.

Best beauty buys?

All Ren products from Kay @ Yaro. Mac lipsticks in Russian Red and Dangerous.

What is your signature scent?

I have several as I'm crazy about perfumes. Day - Violet Blonde by Tom Ford Evening Daphne by Comme Des Garçons, Carnal Flower by Frederic Malle or Enslaved by Roja Dove

Red v nude lipstick?

RED. I look ill in nude!

Best pieces of fashion advice?

• Dress for the size you are when you waken up that morning!!! • Coco Chanel once said, "Before you leave the house, look in the mirror and remove one unnecessary accessory."

Favourite song?

Summertime by Ella Fitzgerald or any of the Arias from Lucia di Lammermoor.

Favourite destination?

Paris - love the left bank and the Marais.

Favourite film?

Vintage, Pretty Woman. Current, Calvary.

Favourite accessories

My broaches and pearls and also a 1920's diamond ring which my husband bought me when I first opened the shop. I wear

Favourite cocktail?

I'm honestly not mad about cocktails but I do love a great pinot noir.

My idea of the perfect weekend is...

At home Friday night with my wonderful friends at the Friday club for dinner. Saturday morning at the St. George's market, lunch with my husband, a walk by the sea and dinner in Ox or The Howard in the city centre or within walking distance of home Graze. Sunday by the fire with a great book, a glass of red wine and a movie at the QFT in the evening.

The perfect weekend away - in London with my husband and our lovely sons (who both live there), their partners and my gorgeous granddaughter Poppy. Whatever we do together, we always have great fun.

FASHIONTRAVELTIPS

Pack it

like a Pro As we all know, travelling light is harder than it looks! With one modest-sized suitcase to fit in all of those bikinis, shoes (let’s face it every outfit needs a different pair of shoes!), and then there’s all of the toiletries, packing can be a bit of nightmare. So, here are our top tips on how to pack light this summer.

Divide & Conquer

One rule to ensure everything fits is when you have your selection laid out on your bed, just cut it in half. This may sound drastic, but it will force you to think about what you will really wear and remember all of those times when you’ve returned with clothes you never even wore. How many times have you come back from holiday and promised yourself that you will never take that much stuff again? Make this the year you take control and only bring your favourite pieces that make you feel special because these are the only ones that you are going to really wear.

Be Prepared

Okay, so you want to pack light, but you also don’t want to leave behind something you need. So, consider everything you might be doing – sunbathing, dining out, playing tennis and sightseeing – then lay out all that you are going to need and if there is anything that isn’t essential then leave it at home.

Colour Coding

Look at all that you have laid out to pack and choose items based on the fact they will work with lots of other items. This way it makes it easier when choosing your outfit

18

NW

when you are away, but it also ensures that you don’t end up lugging loads of things that just don’t go with anything else and as a result you will end up never wearing.

Fancy Footwork

Okay, you can’t expect to pack a pair of shoes for every outfit. So, opt for an everyday pair and evening pair in neutral colours that go with everything. Metallics are a good choice and are totally on trend this summer. Save on space in your suitcase by packing two pairs of shoes into the corners and then wear another pair for travelling. Three pairs of shoes should get you through a week or two in the sun!

Roll Don’t Fold

Roll every item that can be rolled as this will negate creasing. If you take anything remotely tailored, turn it inside out and tuck in the sleeves and it will arrive in the best shape possible.

Pack a Sweater

Make sure you pack a couple of summer knits for those cool summer evenings. They’re comfortable, versatile and pack beautifully.

Versatile Accessories

Scarves are light and easily packed. Opt for large, pashmina style scarves that can double up as beachwear and outerwear.

Duplicate Dresses

Dresses are great for packing light for holidays – one item equals one complete outfit – just add shoes and go! Choose dresses that can be worn casually during the day but blinged up for evening with a few well chosen accessories.

In the Swim

Pack as many bikinis and swimsuits as you like – after all they only take up a tiny bit of space! However, bear in mind that you don’t need a new bikini every day and to be honest you will probably only wear one or two – otherwise you could be dealing with all manner of different tan lines!

Remain Clear & Focused

Wash bags with see-through compartments are brilliant for organising your essentials, from dry shampoo to sun lotion. They tend to be lightweight and you can check quickly to see if you’ve forgotten anything. Remember to make sure all beauty items are less than 50ml if you’re planning to take them onboard a flight.

FASHIONSLIDERS

Slide into Summer Seen on the catwalks of Céline, Prada and Givenchy, the slider is far from dainty, some may say rather ugly, but for those slaves to fashion, this is the shoe of the summer. Don't worry if you don't have the budget for a designer pair, these shoes are big news on the high street as well. Alexa Chung

The Business of Beauty This issue we speak to proprietor of the hugely successful Vita Liberata tanning brand, Alyson Hogg, asking if she could have foreseen the global success the brand enjoys today?

A

lyson Hogg set up her company distributing beauty products and most notably, the Vita Liberata tanning range in 2003. Previously, Alyson had worked in broadcasting at UTV, the NI hospitality industry and even had a stint as Communications Director with the Women’s Coalition. At one point Alyson ended up selling health products on the Sky Shopping channel and learnt a lot about nutrition during this time. Wanting to embrace her new found knowledge, Alyson launched a skin care range called Coral Silk which then led to the development in 2008 of the Vita Liberata tanning collection. ‘Since developing the formula for Vita Liberata our products have evolved and developed over the years and the business has just gone from strength to strength. When we brought Vita Liberata to the market in December 2008 it sold out in two weeks! Now Vita Liberata is stocked in over 22 countries and in international retailers including Sephora and QVC,’ explains Alyson. ‘For anyone looking to launch a new product it’s important to make sure that it brings something truly new to the sector. I approached our tanning products by asking what was wrong with existing products and what did I want from a self tan? So, we dealt with the smell, how quickly it dries on the skin, streakiness and the colour. We also wanted to ensure that the formula was made from the best organic ingredients. Over the years we’ve continued to develop different types of tan and strengths of products. We started with an over-the-counter gel-based tan, which led to a demand from beauty salons for a spray tan. We even have an invisible spray tan, which can be applied and then gradually develops throughout the day, which is great for busy women on the go. I don’t want to leave a salon after a spray tan looking like I’ve rolled in mud and other women are the same. ‘We are constantly looking to offer tanning solutions to our customers. For example, when we launched pHenomenal 2-3 Week Tan with pHenO2 technology a couple of years ago offering a self tan that lasts up to four times

longer than regular self tans. So girls who simply can’t take the sun, don’t have to come home from holidays paler than when they left! This was the first product of its kind and it was filling a gap in the market. ‘Identifying further gaps in the selftanning market, we have recently expanded our offering to two groups who have not traditionally been well served by products of this nature. NKD SKN has been designed for more price conscious customers who crave fantastic quality of ingredients and results on a budget; and Skin Respect essentially I made for women who appreciate fine anti age benefits, are wary of

"Since developing the formula for Vita Liberata our products have evolved and developed over the years and the business has just gone from strength to strength. Now Vita Liberata is stocked in over 22 countries..." the sun, but want a beautiful healthy glow to the skin. ‘We must always challenge ourselves to improve what we offer to the public. It’s a great discipline; complacency and negativity are the enemies of success. If you believe in your business you must work at it 25 hours a day, get your family involved, trust your gut, and stick at it! I always knew we had an amazing product and a very smart team, so when you have those two things then there is little reason that you can’t grown hugely, other than if we were ever to become complacent. ‘When judging the success of my own business, as I said, complacency is the road to ruin in business, so I am not sure that I will ever feel the brand has in any way completed its success! As we get bigger and move into more markets such as the USA, the drive and ambition remains the same, it’s just that the challenges and rewards are that much greater! But yes, when famous retailers email us to ask if we would consider selling through their stores, or celebrities randomly tweet their love for our product, then I guess we are reminded that we have maybe moved to another level. 'We have lots of celebrity fans, but we haven’t ever paid a star to endorse our products. Of course, our celebrity fans are very important to us, but no more important than having a true following of

women who love what we do! However, let’s face it women want to know what the celebrities are wearing. We’ve tanned loads of famous faces including model Erin O’Connor, Alexandra Burke, Una Healy from The Saturdays, Ellie Goulding and even Gwyneth Paltrow. So are people surprised that a successful, global beauty brand hails from Northern Ireland? According to Alyson, ‘It’s interesting. People from Northern Ireland are often aghast! I guess because we know how small Ulster, Antrim, Ballyclare really is! But people in San Francisco, Paris, Milan, New York, Moscow, Sydney, Capetown, Oslo, Stockholm, Copenhagen and London? They never bat an eyelid! We deliver on our promises and make amazing products…simple! As for the future, ‘We want to take that number one slot…of course! And continue to stretch the boundaries not just of tanning but also of skincare in general. We are currently working on a most amazing product for chronic skin conditions…watch this space!’

WORKINGWOMAN

A Crafty Business Two local craft businesses have flourished with the help of online marketplace Etsy, which is the perfect portal for Rebecca Anderson and Garreth and Carla Falls to sell their unique, handmade items. Here are their inspirational success stories... Rebecca Anderson thecuriousbeadshop.etsy.com & songbead.etsy.com

‘I

have always been creative, especially in the field of jewellery making and began teaching it in 2007. In 2011 it seemed like it was time to move into selling my work as well and Etsy is well known, respected and easy for someone with only really basic computer skills (such as myself!) to set up. I initially opened my other Etsy shop, songbead. etsy.com, as well as taking part in local and national craft fairs. A year and a half ago, I found I was importing a lot of my supplies for my designs from America, at

retail prices plus paying customs on top of this. Many of the beads and cords I was using were really hard to get hold of in this country. I figured I couldn’t be the only one in this boat and so set up the curious bead shop! Alongside the beads, cords and findings that I import, it has also allowed me to develop my own line of metal findings for other jewellery designers to use in their work. Etsy has helped to improve my lifestyle: I studied music at university and college, and fell into a lot of school peripatetic (voice/piano as opposed to classroom music) teaching after graduating. This was only ever meant to be a stop gap but somehow I found it eating into more and more of my week as my 20s continued. Last August my partner got a job in Belfast, which meant a move over from Manchester where we had both been based since starting university in 2000. My jewellery/ craft supplies business allowed me to

move with her and entirely give up music teaching, which had been a goal of mine for some time! My Etsy shops were not a small part of that and whilst I'm certainly not quite rolling in roses yet, the fact that I was able to give up my day job still overjoys/ astonishes/surprises me on an almost daily basis! I work much, much longer hours and don't really ever get weekends - I'd imagine this is a common thread with the selfemployed! - but I love that I can work from home at something I am passionate about. It's still early days really for both my

sweets, candles, and recycle waste all as a means to make ends meet. Rather than wait around for funding or remain unemployed they sowed their last few pennies into making and selling soaps as a means generating an income. ‘What better way to test the market than a few house parties and perhaps even an internet shop. A quick mention of the word ‘Etsy’ by a friend and we were hooked!’ ‘Etsy works for us as it has allowed us to grow as a family whilst growing a business. It has allowed us to grow sustainable and responsibly without debts hanging over our heads. Our products can be made and shipped on demand, which allows us to

carry a low amount of stock of any one item, helping with cashflow. Being selfemployed requires much more hours work than one might think, but as youth and community workers we were used to long anti-social hours. The upside is however that we can have a break during the day to play with our two (soon to be three kids). With Etsy, we have been able to test photos, play with products, offer a wider range to see what works, sell our story and build our brand. It has been absolutely invaluable to us as we began our journey three years ago to build a few soaps into a social enterprise and giving it some brand identity. ‘Our dream for ScENT was to create an ethical brand; good for the grower, the maker and the environment, right through to the consumer. Every cosmetic product (excluding the novelty soaps) ScENT makes is ethically sourced, sustainable, organic and supports local employment as much as possible. Further, ScENT seeks to be a business that makes a difference in the world, so with that in mind it, reinvests profit into a variety of different causes and charities. ‘For every product we sell ten percent of the manufacturing price goes to a

cENT started out in 2011 by husband and wife team, Garreth and Carla, two social entrepreneurs wanting to change the world through the medium of soap. ScENT sells unique handpainted fruit soaps, which sell globally as well as a number of organic and fairly traded skin/bodycare products. As community workers in Northern Ireland the credit crunch came just as Garreth and Carla were trying to negotiate a £3.3 million capital project in the most bombed community in Northern Ireland. The recession saw the funding collapse as they walked away homeless and jobless with a sick baby in tow. Inspired by Brazil's entrepreneurial spirit (Carla is Brazilian) Garreth felt that people were able to make crafts,

charity in Nigeria called ‘Stepping Stones Nigeria’, every product sold will also give one person clean water for a week, protect a few square metres of rainforest and invest in other micro-business investment ventures. ‘In relation to our skincare and cosmetics however we have taken the time to study as Aromatherapists and design products that are geared towards specific skin conditions and which fragrance also carries relevant therapeutic properties.’

Dream Big, Start Small, Start Now Throughout history more businesses are set up in a tough economic environment than at any other time. Maybe we are forced to be more creative through losing a job or we find courage to explore a great opportunity or idea. Either way there are some basic rules that make for a good business idea becoming a great business and Kate Marshall Chair of Vistage Chief Executive Development and Chair of Women in Business NI is here to offer her expert advice...

S

tart with WHY. Why are you doing this, what is your end goal? Be clear about what you want and what you are willing to sacrifice to do it. Too often people start businesses with the wrong motivation and run out of ideas, energy and money. Work out the why and that will drive your motivation and creative energy. Never chase money, chase doing work you love, know why you are doing it and if you are good, the money will follow. Show your Passion. If you’re not passionate about the idea for your product or service you’re not ready to start a business. Running a business will take every ounce of focus and energy you have and if you are not ready to give it your all – look for another idea Find a Mentor. Find someone who you admire (may not know) and ask them to work with you as you develop your idea or service. Do your research, find a mentor who knows about your business area, demonstrate your passion for the business and then ask – be prepared to meet them outside of the normal working hours. Great mentors are usually busy people. Go for the best not who is available! Research. Find innovative ways to research your business idea. Be creative! Read as much as you can about entrepreneurs and business start-ups. Look at great companies across the world – what can you learn from them? Every large company started small. Every expert started as a novice. Build your support network. Business today is all about connection Human to Human is the new currency. Your network can offer support and advice on research, funding, dealing with the legal requirements, government grants and support available. Look for strategic partners. Who can you collaborate with? This may mean you agree to do work for each other

businesses but now I am able to completely devote myself to them and help them grow even more. ‘To others, I would like to point out that I phased out my teaching job over a period of time to help supplement my Etsy income and my bead shop helps to bolster my overall income while I continue to grow and develop the jewellery business. It’s not simply a matter of setting up on Etsy and then boom you have a successful business, you may have to juggle part-time work until your business is at a point that it’s your sole source of income. There is a lot of marketing and promotion of your business to be done in order to direct people to your Etsy page and this shouldn’t be underestimated if you want to see substanitial business success.’

to enable you to get started without much cash up front. I did a contra deal with one of my clients, I offered coaching and in return they built my website. Are there other businesses you know of where you can share resources, premises or create greater buying power? Never let lack of funding stop you. If your idea is great and you have created a business plan that shows it can work and you and others around you believe in it. Keep going. Keep the customer as the main thing. People buy into you before they buy into your product or service. Competitive advantage is how you make them feel! Hire the right people. Hire for attitude first all the time, you can train people, they can get experience but you can’t train attitude. Hire the best, they will probably be more than you can afford - all the more reason you need them - provided they have the right attitude Failure is an option. Great leaders know that failure is essential if you are to really learn and grow. Don’t let fear of failure stop you. Learn from it. Fear is temporary, regret is forever, Dream Big, Start small, Start now! Kate Marshall

ove what you do but make sure what you do doesn’t take over your life. That’s the advice from the woman who heads up the UK arm of one of the most successful news organisations to have emerged over the last few years, one which is taking on the incumbent news gatherers and winning. Carla Buzasi is UK Editor-in-Chief of The

Huffington Post and has had a busy couple of years establishing the online media company on these shores. As such, she’s well placed to offer a gathering of the female corporate elite advice on how to make sure a passion for the job doesn’t corrode passion for the rest of life. In her speech to the assembled guests she admits being constantly checking

How Carla Buzasi became Editor-in-Chief of Huffington Post UK “I was working at AOL and one morning the CEO Tim Armstrong sent an email out to entire company that rumours were about to break that we were buyng the Huffington Post. I was standing at the train platform on my way to work when I got that email and quickly found Ariana Huffington's (the founder of the Huffington Post) email address and I emailed her to introduce myself. I asked if we could chat and I met her a month or so later for breakfast. Later that morning she announced at a news conference we were holding at the Guardian newspaper that not only were we launching Huffington Post but I would be the editor-in-chief so there was no going back. I didn't realise I had pitched myself for a job but it turns out I had.”

I use a lot of what I do in my personal life as ideas for articles we might run in the Huffington Post or topics we feel we should feature.” Such integration is perhaps easy for those working in the media to achieve than for say, accountants, and more practical measures may be needed to prevent work from taking over life. “I've separated my work email from my personal email on my phone and make sure I turn my phone off at night when I'm out for dinner with friends. My Brilliant Career

Louise McKenna, interior designer and proprietor of Elle Designs and Interiors by Elle boutique, shares her insights into why she started her own business and what it takes to succeed in the field.

Did you always know you wanted to work in this field? Yes. My creative side was evident from a young age. I have chalk drawings of elevations of my bedroom drawn when I was eight! As a teenager I scoured auctions for pieces to upcycle before upcycling was a trend. I remember being addicted to changing rooms and fancied the idea of transforming spaces.

continued to flow the demand for domestic interiors increased and so Elle Designs was born. I worked successfully for five years from my studio but demand from clients and a vision for a more accessible showroom space led me to open Interiors by Elle boutique.

shop, recruiting staff and opening the doors within 12 weeks was an incredible challenge alongside running an office and restaurant refurbishment with deadlines and several domestic jobs but the results made the stress all worthwhile.

What has been the highlight of your career so far?

Why did you decide to set up your own business and what is involved?

Being commissioned to design and project manage the design of a 39,000 square foot luxury home in Lancashire. The client was a business advisor to Lord Sugar on The Apprentice. The project took over eighteen months and was all encompassing. I commuted most weeks to England yet still held down my projects at home. The results were amazing and the clients were thrilled. Somehow I managed to plan my wedding in the midst of it which was a personal highlight.

What has been the biggest challenge you have faced?

The biggest challenge came when I decided to open the new boutique. Designing the

Ever since I was a teenager I was always entrepreneurial. From age fifteen I was running small ventures to create my own income mainly in designing and printing stationary and business cards. Both my father and brother have their own businesses and I always knew this was the route I would take. I knew I was building up my experience to be able to work for myself but expanding into retail premises and opening my fabric library to the public was a bit of a surprise for me. I saw beautiful objects at a trade show in Paris this January and I knew my clients would need to

Can you talk us through the various stages of your career?

My first interior design project was for GCSE. I designed, built and furnished a dolls house. It was at this stage I knew for certain I wanted to work in interiors. After A level Art I completed a Foundation in Art and I went on to complete Interior Architecture followed by a degree in Interior Design. From university I was fortunate to start immediately into a job with a commercial and leisure design & fit out company. I got a good grounding in the industry, being thrown in at the deep end with large scale bar/club refurbishments. Unfortunately the company was affected by the recession and closed its doors. It was at this point I spread my wings and headed to Australia. Whilst there, phone calls came from home enquiring about my services to design bars. So I came home and fell into designing without even having a business name - I was too busy to think about it! As work

see them in the flesh so a shop would be the solution. I secured the premises the morning after I flew home without much planning involved and the rest happened fairly quickly.

Where do you see yourself in ten years time?

I always envisage myself working in interior design but planning long term isn't for me. I'm quite philosophical and live for the moment. I wouldn’t have thought six months ago that I would open a boutique. I’m very impulsive and grab opportunities when they arise. I have a positive outlook for the future but I don’t like long-term plans.

How do you strike a balance between your work and personal life?

I think finding a work/life balance is a challenge for any working mum. I'd be the first to admit I'm not quite there yet. I find it hard to switch off from work as I work from home most nights so I like to get away for weekends with my family to help me unwind and relax. I have a 15 month old boy so I am aware that this is precious time. I’m hoping now that I have another designer on board I will have more time to spend with my family.

What advice would you give to someone who wanted to follow in your footsteps?

A very significant point in my career was a work placement I had with O'Donnell O'Neill. Five years of university was all well and good but I learned more in a three month placement with them so I'd advise anyone to get some experience in a workplace – even if you have to work

for free. Interior design covers a broad spectrum of work and is often confused with interior decoration so get an insight into what it entails to make sure it is the right job for you. Despite the challenges, I'm working in my dream job and the satisfaction of a finished job and a happy client is second to none.

HEALTHEYEWEAR

Five Reasons to wear sunglasses T

hey may be great fashion accessories but, more importantly, sunglasses are of extreme importance when it comes to maintaining good eye health. Geoff McConville Opticians gives us 5 reasons to wear sunglasses

1./ UV Protection. The sun's UV radiation can cause cataracts; benign growths on the eye's surface; and photokeratitis- sometimes called snow blindness, which is a temporary but painful sunburn of the eye's surface. Wide-brimmed hats and caps can block about 50 percent of UV radiation from the eyes but optometrists say that it is not enough protection. 2./ Blue-Light Protection. Long-term exposure to the blue and violet portion of the solar spectrum has been implicated as a risk factor for macular degeneration - especially for individuals that are "sun sensitive." 3./ Comfortable vision. The sun's brightness and glare interferes with comfortable vision and the ability to see clearly by causing

people to squint and the eyes to water. 4./ Dark adaption. Spending just two or three hours in bright sunlight can hamper the eyes' ability to adapt quickly to night time or indoor light levels. This can make driving at night after spending a day in the sun more hazardous. 5./ Skin cancer. Cancer of the eyelids and skin around the eyes is more common than people think. People should wear sunglasses outdoors whether they are working, driving, participating in sports, taking a walk, running errands or doing anything in the sun.

Don't forget protection for children and teenagers. They typically spend more time in the sun than adults!

Ask the Experts... I would like to get into this trainer thing, but I’ve never worn casual shoes unless it’s to go to the gym. What can I try that is light for the summer, on trend but not too trainer-esque? Sara says... After years of women tottering about on increasingly vertiginous heels, comfort and effortless style is finally winning through as the fashion world embraces the trainer. Blame it on Céline’s creative director, Phoebe Philo, the rise of street style blogs or the 90’s revival but there is no denying that over the last couple of seasons trainers are definitely having a fashion moment, with designer collaborations (Raf Simons and Adidas) modern designer classics (the Isabel Marant wedge) and now the couture trainer (Chanel’s eye-wateringly expensive version). It’s a trend that has been about for a few seasons and is now gathering pace along with a shift towards more functional and pared-down womanswear. And no wonder, along with the obvious plus point- comfort- trainers add a refreshing modern twist to outfits and an unexpected, low-key impact. The Nike Air Max 1 Flyknit is set to be the most popular style this year, but as you wanted something a little less trainer-esque, I would steer you towards Adidas. Keep it classic with their iconic white Stan Smiths or add a pop of colour with a suede Gazelle, I’ve been living in mine for the last couple of months. The beauty of these is that they are neat and simple with clean lines. They add a fresh, contemporary twist to tailored trousers or a trouser suit, cropped jeans, maxi dresses and work really well with this season’s midi-length hemlines. For a very fashion editor look team with skinny jeans, a blazer and beanie.

Q. I work in front of the computer every day and my eyes are feeling the strain. Is there anything I should be doing to protect my eyes? Brian says... Ensure your work area is free from glare, if you wear glasses ensure that you have an anti-reflective coating which helps to reduce glare from computer screens and office lights. Ensure the screen has good resolution and the characters are clear. Regular breaks allow your eyes to focus on different distances. Most importantly a thorough eye exam can help protect your eyes. We can monitor your vision and advise you if glasses will help reduce your strain, your work may even contribute towards this cost.

Q: Though I’m a lady of a certain age I’ve always considered myself fashionconscious and try to stay up to date as much as possible, the problem is my hair, I always seem to end up with an old lady’s hairstyle, I’ve tried various salons and though they come highly recommended they seem to p“ igeon-hole” me because of my age, or say my hair type needs to be a certain way, I see other ladies my age with fabulous cuts and colours but I can never seem to get the same result. Paul says... Well this is the easiest question I’ve ever had to answer in my time at Ask the Expert, because you’ve answered it yourself... You see other woman with the hair you want?... Go and ask them where they go, simple, they’ll gladly tell you and be flattered you asked. It’s true that sometimes people do get “stereo-typed” but great stylists treat clients on an individual basis, starting with the consultation, your stylist will listen, look and learn from what you say and how you look, they may not say too much but more likely listen to you before giving you short and long term possibilities and ideas, the relationship is built on trust and a desire to make you as happy with your new look as possible with a view to updating and changing your style whenever you feel like it. So Margaret, next time you’re out shopping and come over all “hair envious” just pluck up the courage and say “ I love you hair, who does it?” Hopefully it’s me...

Q. What is an Antioxidant? Rachel says... We make antioxidants in our bodies and also get them from food. Their job is to help protect us from ‘free radicals’ which cause damage to cells. We get free radicals from unhealthy food, smoking, alcohol, drugs, through sunlight and we also breathe them in. Some evidence suggests that antioxidants can help in the fight against cancer, heart disease, other degenerative diseases and can help to slow down the ageing process. Different antioxidants have a different job, so variety as always is the key. Antioxidants are generally high in vitamins A, C or E. Foods rich in Antioxidants include blueberries, strawberries, cranberries, apples, plums, spinach, broccoli, kidney beans, pecan and walnuts. Many of these foods are now coming into season, so there is no excuse not to have a handful of berries with breakfast, chopped nuts or kidney beans in a salad or why not try barbecuing broccoli. I always say to try and eat your way through the rainbow, and when better than in summer!

Does my sun cream with a SPF have a shelf live? Angela says... Yes, all sun creams have a shelf life. Cream formulas are approximately around four years, although brands may vary so always double check with the retailer if in doubt. You also need to be aware of the “once opened” guidelines. Many of us are tempted to use the remains of last year’s creams but you cannot guarantee the SPF is safe, and we know the protection in a sun cream can diminish over time. To check how long you can use a product once opened, have a look at the back - you will see illustrated an opened jar with 6 months... 12months... 18months and so on written inside.

Fast Fixes for a Beach Ready Body We all look forward to the summer but it can also be a time we dread. Lots of sun, sand and sangria? Yes please! Flashing lots of skin in swimsuits, shorts and summer dresses? Err, not so much.

C

ommon sense says the best way to get that svelte body is to get into a routine of exercising and eating well. And, to stave off worry closer to the time, the sooner we start the better. Well, there’s no time like the present but how should you go about it?

Get in shape!

Natasha Bamford, personal trainer at Pure Gym, says that setting realistic goals is useful. “It will help keep you focused and make it harder to veer off track. Set yourself a small realistic target and make sure you achieve it. Then set another one and keep smashing them! The first step could be fitting into a pair of jeans that are a bit tight and then, for your next goal, dropping a size.” She recommends free weight resistance training which helps reduce body fat, toning and improving strength and fitness. On top of this, it also forces your metabolism to work harder which means burning more calories (when working out and at rest)! If you have visions of looking like ‘The

50

NW

Hulk’ as a result of all this weight based training, fear not. “There is no possibility of this happening as it is very difficult for women to build mass amounts of muscle due to their hormones and body types,” Natasha explains. Phew, that’s a relief. Natasha recommends trying to get active for 30 minutes a day (including weight based training where possible). Joining a gym and seeing a personal trainer who can advise on an exercise regime to suit you can be beneficial. Another option is taking an exercise class which can be fun and a good way of meeting new people. There are so many classes to choose from like aerobics, circuits, spinning, Pilates, yoga, karate and Tae Kwon Do. The latest class taking the UK by storm is Fitsteps, a dance fusion class mixing Ballroom moves with up-tempo Latin dances. This mix combines to have the greatest effect on the body. Get in touch with your local leisure centre to find out what classes are available near you. If you don’t fancy being indoors, get your heart rate up whilst exploring the best of Northern Ireland’s countryside. Hiking,

running or, to take inspiration from the recent Giro D’Italia, cycling are all options which can be sociable and mean getting out enjoying the brighter weather. However you decide to get in shape, remember it isn’t just about exercising. As Natasha says, you need to complement it by being careful about what you eat and drink. “Aim to reduce sugar in your diet and include more lean sources or protein in every meal. This will leave you feeling fuller for longer and stop you snacking on high carb/high sugar snacks.”

Get prepped!

Prepping your skin is important before applying any products. Exfoliating keeps your skin soft and smooth by clearing away dead skin cells, stopping skin getting clogged up and minimising in-grown hairs. Even better it also means products will penetrate deeper and be absorbed more evenly. Doing this doesn’t have to break the bank although you can certainly use it as an opportunity to treat yourself – many places from Jeanette Kidd Beauty & Day Spa to Natural Beauty, Le Studio Bronze and Hebe

bodyBEAUTIFUL Aesthetic & Anti-Ageing Clinic offer body exfoliation treatments. If that isn’t your thing, good body scrubs are available from a variety of shops and salons. If scrubs seem a bit messy, there are alternatives like exfoliating gloves and brushes. Whatever method you prefer, get scrubbing and your skin will be as good as new! Don’t forget about pesky areas like elbows, heels and knees. Your feet, particularly the heels, can be prone to hardened skin so make sure they aren’t forgotten about before you put on those new sandals.

Tan-tastic

Some people suit being pale beauties (Julianne Moore and Emma Stone certainly rock the look) but for others, having a bit of colour has become the norm. The number of self-tanning products out there is endless and doing it in the comfort of your own home has its benefits. A team of NW volunteers have tried out the latest on the market. See our results on page 52-53 to get the best one for you. Make sure there is an even application, with no streaks or missing spots (hands, feet and backs can be particularly tricky). Enlisting the help of your partner, children or even friends may be necessary. If the thought of baring all with a tan gone wrong is making you balk, why not go to a beautician and enjoy a full body spray tan? Applied evenly and giving glowing results, it takes all the hassle away. Your local beauty salon is likely to offer a solution to your tanning needs. Don’t forget about the face. This can be another tricky area because if the tan goes wrong, you can’t really cover it up. If you don’t want to take the risk, use bronzer to give yourself a bit of colour. Sweep it over your cheekbones, nose and even eyelids to achieve all-over colour.

A Hair-y situation

There are so many ways to get silky smooth legs, many of which can be done at home, from hair removal creams, a razor or an epilator to get rid of those niggling strands. If you prefer the professional touch, a range of different methods are available and it’s up to you to choose your preference. Many prefer waxing, which pulls the hair out from the root meaning it takes longer for hair grows back. Outback Organics have introduced Outback Gold Wax designed to be tough on hair but gentle on the skin making waxing a luxurious pain-free treatment. Now available at Bronze Tanning + Beauty salons across NI, it is used in some of the most luxurious salons and spas in the UK, like the famous Urban Retreat at

Harrods! Hair removal via laser or pulsed light is also popular and destroys the hair’s root with energy going down the hair shaft to the follicle. With laser, hair doesn’t fall out immediately but weakens and comes out over time because the root is blasted.

to the waist to get the lymphatic drainage system working harder. Fake tan also helps to cover up the appearance of cellulite by creating an even colour and giving an overall ‘svelte’ appearance. If you want to go to a professional, there are treatments out there. The Lipofirm Plus machine at Jeanette Kidd Beauty and Day

Natasha Bamford, Personal Trainer at Pure Gym, has given us these tips for getting into shape Up.

Squats (for legs and bums)

Plank Push Up (for stomach and triceps) Lie on your tummy and place your elbows underneath your shoulders with your hands out in front of you. Tighten up your tummy and lift your body off the ground, then place one hand underneath your shoulder and push yourself up into a push up position by doing the same with the other hand. You should be in a push up position now. Lower yourself down to starting position and start again with the opposite arm. If you find this is too difficult, try dropping your knees down onto the ground to make it a bit easier. Aim for 3 sets of 10 repetitions.”

Cellulite Busters

The dreaded orange peel is the bane of many women’s lives and companies realise this, launching products they promise will smooth away the appearance of cellulite. They can be at either end of the spending spectrum. Clarins have developed a new formulation in their Body Lift Cellulite Control product designed to target early and stubborn cellulite for £36. Sisley’s Cellulinov is a technical beauty product designed to erase dimples and smooth the skin but, at £142 a bottle, it certainly isn’t cheap. Apart from body you can also buy home machines. Bliss’ ‘Fatgirlslim’ lean machine has a vacuum setting designed to lift and stimulate skin through a penetrating massage. Used in conjunction with their cream, it should reduce the appearance of cellulite and tighten and smooth your skin. Whether you are using a product or not, try increasing circulation to the area. Use a dry brush and massage from the ankle up

“For legs and bums, there is no better exercise than squats! If you’ve never done a squat before, start by sitting on a chair with your knees bent at 90 degrees and your feet slightly wider than shoulder width apart. Push your weight through your heels while tightening your tummy and stand up straight squeezing your bum and legs at the top of the exercise. Stick your bum out and slowly lower yourself down to the chair and repeat! To progress this, move away from the chair and try to do the same thing standing freely. Aim for 3 sets of 15 repetitions.”

Spa is designed for non-invasive inch loss, body sculpting and cellulite removal by reducing localised fat deposits and body circumference. Mesotherapy and nanopeptide mesotherapy treatments are available at Hebe Aesthetic and Anti-Ageing Clinic which uses biotechnology to break up the network of connective tissue fibres that normally trap fat cells and form cellulite.

Nail it!

Finally, get your nails painted in bright summer colours to really finish off your look. Pastel and neon shades are going to be huge. Arrange a night in with the girls so you can have a pampering session together, completed by doing each other’s nails. If you want nails that are guaranteed to last, particularly if you’re off on your hols, gel nails are great because they are designed to withstand knocks and bumps. Natural Beauty offers Calgel Nails, Beauty by Lisa, Cookstown have Bio Sculpture Gel Overlays and at Le Studio Bronze you can choose from gel or acrylic nails.

He-Shi Rapid 1 hour liquid tan "This product gave a really nice colour, even on naturally pale skin like mine. There was a good colour to the tan so you could see where the liquid was applied. The tan didn’t streak and the application was even. One thing I did notice was that the tan didn’t have a strong smell on application but it increased on development. It delivered what it promised, especially with the instant golden colour and quick drying."

"I have pale skin and found this really easy to apply. It didn’t streak but was dark going on although this turned into a lovely natural brown colour. HEALTHPREGNANCY

The Future of

Fertility

Pregnancy isn’t always easy to achieve but using the latest scientific techniques GCRM-Belfast is offering couples in Northern Ireland pioneering fertility treatment.

S

o, you want to have a baby, but it’s taking a lot longer to conceive than you would like. If you have been trying for a year or more with no success, at this point you will probably want some answers. GCRM-Belfast, a state-of-the-art fertility clinic affiliated with the Glasgow Centre of Reproductive Medicine (GCRM), opened in Belfast in 2013 and provides a personalised service for each of their patients. With knowledge and experience of the very latest fertility treatment techniques, the expert team at GCRM-Belfast can help you start or add to your family. Building on the success and experience of their sister clinic GCRM, which is widely recognised as one of the UK’s leading IVF units, patients at GCRM-Belfast benefit from the sharing of best practice and scientific resources between these teams who are at the pinnacle of the assisted reproduction sector. As such, GCRM-Belfast was the first IVF clinic in Northern Ireland to use the ground-breaking new approach to IVF, the ‘Early Embryo Viability Assessment’ (Eeva) test, which improves embryo selection.

56

NW

Eeva is an innovative imaging system which is designed to non-invasively and safely identify those embryos most likely to develop to a blastocyst at an early stage. As Dr Robbie Kerr, GCRM-Belfast Labratory Director comments, ‘Basically, Eeva is intelligent software that allows my laboratory team and I to analyse patients’ embryos in minute detail and the knowledge gained leads to a higher pregnancy success rate by making sure we transfer back the most viable embryo.’ He goes on to explain, ‘Eeva consists of a unique microscope that fits inside the incubator and by using time lapse photography it creates a video from the images of the embryos. These images are analysed by specialist software identifying important timings of cell division which determines the embryos’ viability. The software not only provides novel quantitative information, but ensures consistent and reliable measurements to assess embryo development versus the manual methods used today in the majority of IVF clinical practice.’

Therefore, for couples embarking on IVF, Eeva offers an even greater chance of a successful pregnancy because the embryos implanted have been screened beforehand to make sure that they are developing as they should. Eeva may also help to reduce the risk of multiple births commonly associated with IVF by enabling single embryo transfer for a large number of patients.

The Background to Eeva

The science behind Eeva came from groundbreaking research conducted at Stanford University. The renowned team of researchers systematically measured three distinct time periods in early human development and were able to predict, with a high degree of accuracy on day two which embryos were most likely would continue development until day five (blastocyst) . These researchers discovered how to best understand the embryos development and identify those which showed signs of normal and abnormal development. This information was then used to select the

HEALTHPREGNANCY best quality normal, healthy embryos to be implanted and in turn improve the number of successful IVF pregnancies. With an exclusive licence to the patented predictive technology from Stanford, Auxogyn was launched in May 2010 and has since developed the Eeva™ Test and supporting laboratory system making this ground breaking science and technology available to IVF clinicians and patients around the world. To ensure the highest quality of product, Auxogyn is committed to rigorous clinical and regulatory validation.

Eeva’s Proven Success

Since Eeva’s introduction in October 2012 through to January 2014, GCRM’s Glasgow clinic has had significant success with the system. Patients under the age of 37 achieved a pregnancy rate of 47 percent, but perhaps more significantly, the system has had a huge impact on success rates in patients aged 37 and over, with the clinical pregnancy rate in this group rising to 41 percent compared to 27 percent in those patients who opted not to use EEVA. The first Eeva baby born in Scotland was delivered on June 11th 2013 to proud parents David and Susan Dempster, who had a healthy baby girl thanks to the treatment they received. Susan and David chose to have the Eeva test at the GCRM to increase their chances of IVF success. The new mother, Susan said, ‘we wanted every chance to be successful, so we chose Eeva.’ Professor Richard Fleming (Scientific Director at GCRM) said at the time, ‘We are very proud to be among the first clinics in the world to announce this news as it demonstrated how successful this new technology can be in enabling couples to have a higher chance of conceiving a baby with IVF. GCRM has always strived to be one of the leading IVF Centres in Europe, offering couples the latest innovations with the best possible outcomes. The Eeva test is the practical end point of good quality research and is the start of a new chapter in the evolution of IVF.’

Why Choose GCRM-Belfast?

Apart from pioneering technology, GCRMBelfast provides patients with a personally tailored fertility treatment package that assesses their needs from the beginning of their journey through to the end and all of the staff are professional and highly experienced at helping couples through this highly emotional process. The clinic itself provides a tranquil, welcoming environment. As Dr Robbie Kerr comments, ‘It is an integral part of the GCRM-Belfast ethos to provide an evidence based, patient focused service of the highest quality. For this reason, when

designing the clinic we put the patient at the centre of everything we did to make their journey as stress free as possible, creating an environment which feels less clinical and more relaxing, but still exceeds the relevant healthcare standards.’ Dr Kerr goes on to explain, ‘Our laboratory facility is the first of its kind in Northern Ireland and provides what few units anywhere can match in terms of equipment, safety and clinical processes. Our sophisticated laboratory suite has been fitted out with the very best in cutting-edge technology, from the incubators and the air purification system, right down to the lighting used to

filter harmful UV light. We give patients 100 percent assurance that we have created the best possible environment in which to nurture the first few days of development for their embryos. At GCRM-Belfast we are exceptionally proud of the fact that our laboratory significantly exceeds the minimum standards set in the UK in every single aspect of its design and function. It is this attention to detail that is key to our high success rates.’ So, if you do have fertility concerns, get in touch with the team at GCRM-Belfast who will help you embark on your journey and fulfil your dreams of starting or expanding your family.

It can be really confusing to know what to do to get amazing skin. That’s why we put together this simple-to-follow guide where we’re giving you step-bystep instructions and discussing the best available products. 1. Determine your skin type 2. If you don’t already have them, you will need to buy: - a cleanser, toner, moisturiser, exfoliant, cotton pads, face mask. 3. Cleanse, tone and moisturise twice a day - once in the morning before you put on make-up, and once at night before you go to bed. 4. A few minutes after cleansing, tone your face with toner and a cotton pad. 5. Moisturise with a face moisturiser for your skin type. We highly recommend the Magic Beauty Face Lift Serum by Dr Gabriela. You can use it in conjunction with your favourite daily moisturiser. The

declustered water contained in the serum will help any nutrients from your cream penetrate deeply into the skin, allowing the cream to work not only on the surface of your skin, but also on deeper levels, providing thorough hydration and nutrition. 6. Depending on your skin’s individual needs, you can substitute your daily moisturiser with vitamin treatment, also offered by Dr Gabriela. The innovative Monoderma vitamin range features 3 different types of vitamins: A15, E and C. The vitamins come in small single-serving biodegradable Vegicaps so you know exactly how much product to use daily. The packaging also ensures that the nutrients within the vitamin solution stay fresh and don’t spoil as with regular face creams, once you open them, the majority of active ingredients oxidise and spoil after only 2 weeks. Monoderma vitamin A15 can be used to treat acne problems and dermatitis.

Monoderma vitamin E fights against ageing, soothing very dry and stressed skin. Monoderma vitamin C fights against ageing, allowing the synthesis of collagen and against age spots caused by hyper pigmentation. 7. Once or twice a week, in place of your daily cleanser, you should exfoliate with an exfoliating facial wash. 8. Apply a face mask regularly. We recommend the Advanced Molecular Mask by Dr. Gabriela Mercik. This mask will hydrate and protect your skin for up to 72 hours, creating a transparent, protective shield on the skin. The silk protein mask contains hydrating molecules and the highest concentration of natural plant extracts on the market, strengthening the skin carrier. This luxurious mask is based on most recent developments in molecular biology, including two Nobel Prize winning ideas. It’s suitable for all skin types, does not cause irritation, contains no parabens

or artificial colourants. Unlike other masks, this one is made entirely out of silk and when applied to the skin, it dries out releasing all the nutrients directly into the skin- none of them stay inside the mask, which means you are getting the most out of the mask. We highly reccomend Dr. Gabriela´s Exclusive Line featured recently in Dubai. Exlusive Line combines Advanced Molecular Mask and Magic Beauty Face Lift Serum. The high-molecular serum creates a natural film, which protects the hydrolipid skin barrier and, at the same time, hydrates and prevents transepidermal loss of water. Ultra smooth touch of perfection. Regenerates, lifts, stimulates skin rejuvenating. Greatest antiageing effect. With flakes of pure gold to give your skin a luminous glow. FATHERSDAY

The Hairy Dads As Father's Day approaches, we catch up with three dads who, when not cutting and styling the tresses of men and women in Northern Ireland, are enjoying some quality down time with their children.

Mark O’Hare, Sabino Hairdressing he’s a cracking wee lad, full of ideas and enthusiasm. He holds the record for most questions ever asked...EVER!

How has being a dad changed you?

Parenthood triggered seismic changes for me as I think it does for everyone. In many ways life became much less complicated. The realisation that I wasn’t actually the centre of the universe was surprisingly liberating.

How many children do you have?

Image courtesy of Crazy Pixels Dublin

My wife Sharon and I are blessed with two kids. Tasja is eleven and has plans for global domination, I suspect she may be ahead of schedule! Xander is seven and

I like to do whatever the kids tell me I like to do. Trust me that could be anything, they’re always on the go. Tennis is big

Nigel Black, Battisti Hairdressing Daddy’ and a little man who greets me with an amazing smile and giggle – there is no feeling comparable to it in the world – magic – moments like that are priceless!

How do you like to spend time with your children?

How many children do you have?

Three children, Ella who is five and in Primary 1, Lucy who is three and starts nursery in September and little James who is just eight months.

How has being a dad changed you?

It’s incredible and hard to describe. I can’t remember not being a dad. My wife Helen and I often wonder what we did with our time B.K. (Before Kids!) as life is hectic now! When I walk through the door every evening I have two beautiful little girls who run to me squealing excitedly ‘Daddy

Going for walks, bike rides, grabbing a bite to eat. The kids are young and they love to go to the play park and I just love to do things with them that they love doing! We holiday in Marbella every year and the kids talk about it from one year to the next, we have a lot of pool time and I think we have been to every play park in a ten mile radius there! They have their tea before I get home most nights – so when we can I’m a big fan of sitting down together to eat. I love to hear the stories of what they have been getting up to and what they want to do, and of course their excuses for not wanting the rest of their dinner and why they should have chocolate instead!

What is the best thing about being a dad? Without a doubt it is having the privilege to share their little lives with them. I love to watch them grow, enjoying every little

on the agenda at the moment. Ponies, football, netball, swimming, hiking in the Mournes, you name it, they want to do it!

What is the best thing about being a dad? Being Tasja and Xander’s dad.

How do you all like to celebrate Father's Day?

I expect to be attacked whilst sleeping at about 7.30am, admiring my new mug and funny socks by 8am and enjoy a hopefully survivable breakfast (last year was touch and go!) made by my little darlings. As always, the rest of the day is up to them. life stage, whether that is encouraging James to sit up and clap his hands and putting teething gel on his gums, or listening to the girls chattering and talking about Peppa Pig and Doc McStuffins or what they want for their birthdays. I feel overwhelmed by the fact that they look up to me and call me the Boss! It’s an amazing responsibility. I love it when the girls say they are going to marry me – the ultimate compliment!

How do you all like to celebrate Father’s Day?

I’m not really a breakfast in bed kind of person, but the kids love to bring me breakfast in bed and I love to see the delight in their little faces as I tuck in! Then it’s a mad dash to get Ella to Sunday School on time. I like Father’s Day to be a very relaxed affair, it’s one day of the year that we avoid going out for a bite to eat as everywhere tends to be crazy. If the weather is kind we spark up the Weber and spend the day in the garden, failing that it’s my favourite roast with all the trimmings and a Disney princess movie – what else could a man want – though I have to say I’m looking forward to James getting a little older so at least it might be Disney’s Cars or Planes!

FATHERSDAY

Paul Stafford, Stafford Hairdressing Mitchell who seemed to help my wife through her pregnancy more than I did, and Ava, well let's just say when she was born we thought at least she will have a pretty name - fortunately she has grown into it, hahaha!

How has being a dad changed you?

Immensely, actually completely. The obvious, I’m less selfish, more complete as a human being, but also it gives me a better understanding of why I am who I am and that we are all products of our genetics and upbringing. I’m obsessed with the way my daughters think and behave and fascinated by every minute of the changes they go through from one stage to the next.

How many children do you have?

I have two daughters, Joni (soon to be 13) and Ava (11). Joni is named after Joni

Just for You!

How do you like to spend time with your children?

Oh all sorts of ways. We love food, so I like to cook, but because of my industry they spend a lot of time in the salon, at

our shows and seminars and they are constantly surrounded by interesting and creative people so they are not shy or uncomfortable around adults in any way. We all love cities, so London, Paris, Barcelona and especially New York are places we love to go to for breaks. Our house is filled with music, every room has sounds coming from it, weirdly they are very accepting of Leisa and my taste so they know we listen to some pretty odd stuff, especially if I'm planning a show. Having said that I’m pretty critical of their taste, well I am a dad!

What is the best thing about being a dad? There are no bad things.

How do you all like to celebrate Father's Day?

If you knew me you’d know that I hate these Mother’s Day, sausage days, pet snake days things - absolutely hate them, but the girls will buy me records, take me to lunch and generally indulge me in every doting daughter indulgence possible - and then I’ll pay for it all myself!

T

he summer evenings have arrived! After dusting off the garden furniture from the shed and cleaning the barbeque, the last thing you want to do is have to fuss about in the kitchen preparing to cook on it! Luckily, SPAR Northern Ireland has done all the hard work for you... Here, Northern Woman gets a ready-made barbeque insight for all your summer eating needs. If you are throwing together a last minute al fresco get together, SPAR has everything you could possibly need. Start with a few nibbles that might include some bruschetta with tomatoes and mozzarella, smoked salmon or top with a ready-prepared and marinated pulled pork joint from McAtamney's of Ballymena. SPAR has a selection of locally produced hummous, with flavours including roasted red pepper and caramelised onion. Perfect for dipping crisps and bread into and will keep hungry tummies happy while the barbie heats up!

Usually, when the sun comes out in Northern Ireland, we have to think fast and make the most of it! Who has the time to marinade chicken on a Friday after work? If you don’t, then the pre-marinated chicken pieces in a delicious barbeque sauce from Rockvale Poultry in Richhill are ready to go! For something different, try cutting the chicken into bite size pieces, and skewering them onto wooden skewers (which you should leave in water for at least a minute before using) with some vegetables. Cook on the barbeque and serve, et voila, no hassle BBQ chicken and vegetable kebabs!

When it comes to sourcing your barbeque meat, why waste the precious sunny days battling for the last pack of burgers on the supermarket shelf? SPAR’s Fresh Food team has sourced the best in Northern Irish beef from Dunbia in Dungannon, and developed the perfect burger option for the SPAR Own Brand beef burgers. To make your burgers more interesting, try turning them into Beef Sliders: Take the burger meat and blend together using your fingers, season with salt and pepper and whatever spices you might like, and mould into smaller burger patties. Cook on the barbeque and slide them into a smaller burger bun. Use some of SPAR’s locally sourced tomatoes to make a salsa, and add in some fresh rocket, straight from Willowbrook Foods’ lush fields of Killinchy and you have yourself the perfect BBQ slider.

Sausages and ribs are always a firm favourite on the barbeque, and SPAR is giving us an amazing choice this year. We have premium pork sausages produced in Ballymena by Doherty & Gray for the ultimate hot dog – add a dollop of relish and mustard, and BBQ Ribs made by Fred C Robinson with succulent meat and sauce from Ballyclare that need nothing more than to be cooked and enjoyed!

Salads couldn’t be easier either; SPAR has a fresh and tasty selection of side and deli salads all made in Craigavon by Avondale Foods, from a Pesto Pasta Salad to Deli Coleslaw that just need to be opened and set on the table. Salad bags freshly made in Northern Ireland are also super handy – take a bag of Willowbrook Foods Rocket, and add some red peppers, feta cheese and balsamic vinegar for the perfect accompaniment to your spread.

For dessert, get creative! The novelty of mini ice creams will never fail to bring a smile to your guests’ faces as the sun goes down, and if you’re feeling really adventurous, try a no bake cheesecake that just needs to be chilled before devouring!

For even more barbeque and sweet treat inspiration, check out the recipes at www.spar-ni.co.uk

Girl Power F

emale relationships support us in so many ways. That’s why NW launched a competition so one lucky winner could thank the special lady in their life by winning two new season outfits from international fashion brand Mexx worth £500 and a ‘Spatisserie’ day at the luxurious 5* Culloden Hotel. Entries flooded in but Ruth Kitson’s emotional entry about why her older sister, Yvonne Monteith, deserved some TLC moved the judges. Yvonne became a pillar of support for Ruth when she gave birth to a stillborn baby in 2008 and during her pregnancy with her first daughter, born by emergency Caesarean, in 2010. “It was the worst experience of my life.

74

NW

She helped me more than I can ever say and I don’t think she knows how much it meant. I wouldn’t have gone through that and come out the other side without her.” When Ruth saw the competition she knew it was the perfect way to thank her sister. “It’s hard to express in words what it meant and this was a good way to do it.” So, how did they get on? Ruth and Yvonne enjoyed choosing their

gorgeous outfits from Mexx; Yvonne’s favourite item was a summer trench coat whilst Ruth fell in love with the jeans. At the Culloden, they chose facials as their treatments before enjoying Afternoon Tea in style. Most importantly of all, the sisters enjoyed some quality time together, something that’s a bit more difficult to do these days with their hectic schedules.

Making a Statement

This modern Draperstown dwelling certainly makes a statement, full of bright colours, vibrant patterns and modern finishing touches.

J

ulie and her daughters live in the bustling market town of Draperstown in Mid-Ulster. The family lived in a bungalow near Julie’s mum and family for over ten years. The location was everything they wanted so when their bungalow began to show its age and needed more than a refresh, Julie decided the best way forward was to start from scratch. So began the process of designing a replacement dwelling. Luckily Julie had on hand her godson Orin of OJQ architecture in Garvagh, a newly qualified architect with plenty of fresh and exciting ideas to bring to a design. As he knew the family so well, briefing him on what she wanted was a breeze. In fact, she trusted the design completely to him. Julie just specified more light, space and the all important luxury-space for a hot tub! The site wasn’t without limitations due to its size and location but Julie wasn’t disappointed when she saw the design. Before long the process was kickstarted, planning approved, bungalow demolished and the family moved to Julie’s mum’s for the duration of the build. Once the build was signed off on and the construction was underway Julie began to think about her interior aspirations for her new home. Top of her list was a fabulous kitchen. After careful planning with The Design Yard, fabulous was just

what she achieved. With a vaulted ceiling and a rather awkward shape it took hours of design and consideration to conceive the final result. Not only is the kitchen a looker but it’s crammed with features to fit a modern family lifestyle. USB ports, Quooker tap, top spec appliances, wine cooler just to name a few! Julie choose Corian work surfaces for this kitchen and is delighted with her choice as she feels it’s much lower maintenance than granite

surfaces she had in the past. This large sociable kitchen is the heart of the home. And whilst Julie wanted more space she decided against an open plan layout in favour of separate rooms leading from the kitchen. Large double doors leading to other rooms give her more flexibility to connect the spaces when she needs to. The kitchen leads onto a fabulous outdoor canopied area which houses her hot tub and provides a beautiful sheltered area >

for summer entertaining, without being impeded by the unpredictable Northern Ireland weather! Julie also designed the bathrooms herself with the help of a local supplier. Once the kitchen and bathrooms were designed the mammoth task of the interior design loomed ahead and she needed fresh inspiration. At this stage she employed interior designer Louise McKenna of Elle Designs to come alongside her and design the interior. Although the house was a new build it presented some design challenges but Julie knew she wanted a colour-filled, vibrant modern look and a serious style statement. So Louise delivered exactly this. Julie says, ‘The ideas Louise gave us encouraged me to go bolder than I imagined I would, but I’m delighted she guided us that direction’. The careful planning and design of the kitchen is complemented by a colour palate of Chartreuse and buff as well as statement lighting from Elle Designs to accent the ceiling height. A bespoke table and chairs, commissioned by Louise from Derry’s, is perfectly proportioned to the room and works beautifully with the overall kitchen concept. Cosy family rooms full of texture and colour lead from the kitchen. “My favourite

76

NW

room is the living room,” says Julie. “It’s so cosy. I imagine myself in there relaxed and snuggled up with a book, but it hasn’t happened quite yet!’ With a house full of ladies, as you can imagine, the bedrooms are feminine to the last detail! Deep button headboards in lush velvets, florals, birds and whimsical patterns are at in play in each bedroom! Julie’s daughters love their bedrooms –

what girl wouldn’t? But the piece de resistance in the interior design of this home is the hall. The front door is used as the main entrance and the busiest thoroughfare in the house so Julie wanted this to have serious wow factor. Despite its size, the hall is a dark space and rather than try against the odds to lighten the area, both Julie and Louise felt that dark, dramatic and opulent was the perfect

LIFESTYLEHOUSE

option. Orange and charcoal with lashings of texture and pattern help create this look. Julie loves the impact of the wallpaper and is a convert to the amazing warmth and interest it creates. Elle Designs supplied all the furniture and lighting. “We also had a perfect nook for our piano which fits happily with the design,” said Julie. The entire process of building and completing the interior of the home took 18 months. Amazingly Julie encountered very few hiccups along the way. Julie advises anyone considering a replacement dwelling to just go for it but her top tip is to employ an interior designer sooner. ‘I’d built twice before so I should have known better, but I should have had my interior designer on board at the planning stage – it would have made decisions easier at the decoration stage’. She cites building her dream home as a completely pain and stress free process! She credits both the architect and the interior design professionals as the reason this was the case. ‘I completely trusted the designers, they are the professionals and I let myself be guided by them. I’m happy I did as I’m delighted with the house and quite honestly wouldn’t change a thing’.

The bedrooms are huge, decorated in a modern style, ours with a super king-sized four-poster bed, small dining table, TV, minibar, safe, dressing table, wardrobes, and still the room seemed spacious. The ensuite bathroom had a shower and bath, and was spotlessly clean. The bed was huge and incredibly comfortable - and the view from the room overlooked the formal gardens with the rhododendrons in full bloom. A range of dining options are offered, from the Cristal gourmet restaurant, to the Grand Hall that serves snacks all day. The fine dining restaurant was a real stand out - superb food, diverse menu. Dinner was excellent. The starter of seared Loch Fyne scallops was mouthwateringly delicious, followed by the medallions of venison in a delightfully rich wine sauce, and an irresistible array of desserts. Retiring to the impressive 40 yard long ‘Grand Hall’ after the evening meal and indulging in a cocktail or two is popular. Summer Celebrations:

The best places to party this summer In this issue, we’re jet-setting all over the world to uncover this summers “ must experience” festivals. From the very weird to the truly wonderful these festivals give everyone an excuse to celebrate. Isle of Wight Festival 12 - 15th June

The Isle of Wight festival is like no other. It has been a staple on the festival circuit since 1968 and has boasted some of the biggest names in music, Bob Dylan, Pink Floyd, The Who and Jimi Hendrix to name but a very small few. This years line up does not disappoint either. Headline acts include the Red Hot Chili Peppers, Kings of Leon and the worlds highest paid DJ, Calvin Harris. This will be the first year the festival has teamed up with the Hard Rock Café to launch the brand new Rising Stage. This stage will be dedicated to promoting new music and unsigned artists,

and with the chance to win a trip to the newly opened Hard Rock Hotel Ibiza, there’s sure to be a long queue to get in on the action! www.isleofwightfestival.com

Fiesta de Sao Joao, Portugal 23rd June

This festival has to be one of the most underrated in Europe, and it’s dedicated to love. Extravagant feats and dancing in the streets are what’s on offer at this feel good festival. Preparations begin several days before where statues of religious figures are displayed and houses are decorated with bunting ready for the party to start.

The 23rd sees a peak in the celebrations, including the odd ritual of usually young people hitting their crush with either a limp leek or a plastic hammer, not hard, but flirtatiously I hasten to add. This bizarre activity is followed by more familiar celebrations including BBQs, the lighting of lanterns and the consumption of a lot of wine. www.visitportugal.comm/en

White Nights, St Petersburg 11th June - 2nd July

Although not strictly a festival, the White Nights, or Beliye Noc in St Petersburg are definitely worth a mention. The natural phenomenon normally lasting from 11th June to 2nd July sees the skies stay bright all night. This is due to the uniquely northern position of the city at 59 degrees 57’ North, roughly on the same latitude as Oslo, Norway, the southern tip of Greenland and Seward, Alaska. During these few weeks of the year, the city quite literally awakens with couples taking romantic summer strolls across the iconic Blagoveshchensky Bridge. Festival of Sant Joan, Barcelona 23rd – 24th June

Barcelona is a city that loves a party for any reason. This particular celebration is in aid of the Summer Solstice, the shortest night of the year. Bonfires are lit throughout the city and fireworks colour the sky through to the small hours of the morning. There are said to be three symbols of Sant Joan: Fire to symbolise purity, water symbolising healing and herbs to symbolise healing. All three aspects are incorporated in the celebrations with fires being lit, people bathing in water, and it is said that on this night, herbs possess ten times the healing power than usual. The best place to celebrate this feast is from the hills above the city, to get a unique view of the bonfires and fireworks. www.barcelona-tourist-guide.com

Mrs Brown’s Boys D’Movie

Hercules

How to Train Your Dragon 2

When Moore Street market-trader Agnes Brown finds her livelihood under threat from a ruthless developer, she and her family embark on a campaign to save her stall, aided as only the Browns will be by a motley troop of blind trainee Ninjas, an alcoholic solicitor, and a barrister with Tourettes Syndrome. Mrs Brown’s Boys D’Movie is directed by Ben Kellett (director of the BAFTA, IFTA, and Scottish BAFTA award-winning BBC TV series Mrs Brown’s Boys) and produced by Stephen McCrum.

Everyone knows the legend of Hercules and his twelve labours. Our story begins after the labors, and after the legend…Haunted by a sin from his past, Hercules has become a mercenary. Along with five faithful companions, he travels ancient Greece selling his services for gold and using his legendary reputation to intimidate enemies. But when the benevolent ruler of Thrace and his daughter seek Hercules’ help to defeat a savage and terrifying warlord, Hercules finds that in order for good to triumph and justice to prevail he must again become the hero he once was. He must be Hercules.

The second chapter of the How to Train Your Dragon trilogy brings back the fantastical world of Hiccup and Toothless five years later. When Nina, a fragile actress, strays towards their group, Luke recognises a damaged soul and the balance between the friends is threatened. Suddenly the fallout threatens to be immense.

uilding on their acclaimed work with DS3 WRC and DS3 Racing, Citroën Racing has developed the refined DS3 Cabrio to create a limited edition that combines sporting performance, dynamic styling and the pleasure of top-down driving. Under the bonnet, DS3 Cabrio Racing’s 207hp four-cylinder 1.6-litre THP engine – the same as in DS3 Racing – delivers 30% more power and 15% more torque than the standard THP 155 unit on which it is based. 0-62mph is achieved in just 6.5 seconds and, where it is safe and legal, the model has a top speed of 145mph. Striking to look at, the DS3 Cabrio Racing sets itself apart with sports detailing and a dynamic colour scheme, offset by hints of carbon fibre – synonymous with motor racing and performance. DS3 Cabrio Racing is based on the top level specification DSport trim, which includes LED daytime running lights, automatic digital air conditioning and rear parking sensors. The model also features the eMyWay Signature pack, which includes an RDS stereo radio/ MP3 compatible CD player with steering mounted controls as well as a Bluetooth® system with USB socket and eight speaker HiFi system.

Dacia Sandero Stepway – SUV style – supermini costs N

orthern Woman have recently offered the chance to test drive the Dacia Sandero Stepway. Dacia hasn’t been in Northern Ireland very long but because of what is on offer with price and warranty means sales have really taken off. With the style of a Sports Utility Vehicle and the practicality of a family hatchback, this vehicle ticks a lot of boxes. The raised height gives you a commanding view of the road, easy access with four doors and plenty of room inside for passengers. Generous boot space with split seats which fold down. Volume is 320 litres with rear seats in place or with the rear seats folded down 1200 litres. The Sandero Stepway offers a choice of two frugal engines, which blend brisk performance with exceptional fuel efficiency and best of all, low CO2 emissions. Using turbocharging technology, the state-ofthe-art TCe 90 petrol engine generate an impressive 90hp from just 3-cylinders. Or for the ultimate cruising ability, choose the dCi 90 turbo-dielel engine which emits just 105 g/km of CO2. With prices starting from just £8,395 on the road it is well worth taking a test drive. You will have a brand new car which has a three year (60.000 mile warranty) which for me has to be a safer bet than a second hand car which may not have this amount of warranty.

WEDDINGALBUM

Northern Woman Congratulates… Karla Duffy and Declan McGuire enjoyed a beautiful wedding in Star of the Sea Church, Desertegney followed by a fun-filled reception at the Ballyliffin Hotel, Co. Donegal, where her parents had their wedding reception.

A

s Karla comes from a large family the couple chose to get married in her hometown to allow as many of them to attend as possible. She had her heart set on a lace wedding dress but finding the perfect one was proving impossible. In the end, she ordered lace herself and her mum created the dress making it extra special! She also made the bridesmaids’ dresses which was particularly challenging considering Karla’s sisters were living in three separate locations! The groom and groomsmen's suits came from Protocol in Dublin; Declan’s had peaked lapels so he stood out from the rest. The wedding was a real family affair with everyone pitching in. Karla’s dad provided the wedding cars, one of her sisters made the beautiful bouquet from brooches of her aunts and grandmothers. A cousin made the cake and uncles of the bride and groom drove the happy couple around! Karla made the invitations and sweet trees whilst Declan designed the programmes (which his uncle printed) and the guest book. After dinner and speeches, the dance floor was never empty thanks to show band The Professionals. Karla and Declan would like to thank everyone who came and everyone involved in making their day special.

ONELASTTHING Here is one of Paddy’s looks from NW’s May 2014 photoshoot.

brushes and preparing your kit for the next day, not to mention the emails and Facebook messages that have arrived that day!

How do you divide your time between fashion shoots and your Make Up Pro stores?

It has become more difficult as there is more demand for teaching, colleges and full day salon training across the country but I am very lucky to have built a team to support me in my jobs. But I always make sure to fit my clients in as they have supported me in every way from day one and I want to be a part of their special events.

Who has been the most interesting person you’ve worked with?

With the demand for higher standard of TV and film make up due to the amount of work currently being produced in NI. I really enjoy working with Christian Kotey, expert in SFX and airbrushing. He has a wealth of experience and what he has produced with students during his course at Make Up Pro Store has been great. It is wonderful to speak with another fellow artist who is longer in the industry than I have been.

What’s the most enjoyable part of your job?

Paddy McGurgan

A day in the Life... Life is certainly busy for make-up artist Paddy McGurgan but he gives us a peek into what a typical day is like... What’s it like being a professional make-up artist?

It helps that I enjoy my job because if I didn’t the demands would be much more difficult to deal with. I love the variation and the social aspect, meeting new people and places I never would have got the chance to visit.

Was it difficult breaking into the industry?

I think it was easier for me because I happened to break into it before make up artistry as a career exploded. I spent a long

time doing jobs for free and getting my name out there but I believe it would be more difficult now.

Can you describe your typical day?

Every day is varied but a typical busy day is a very early start at a wedding or a photo shoot from 8am, then sometimes I will have to prepare clints for different functions or bridal trials and then the evening is used for events, additional photo shoots or fashion shows. The hours are very long. It can be from 8am start to midnight or beyond, but this is not every day. Then you start cleaning

Meeting people, seeing them transformed in my chair and helping them feel confident on the biggest day of their lives, should it be their wedding day, an awards ceremony or even a TV appearance. I also really enjoy working on photo shoots where my work is captured for life.

Are there any boring bits or challenges we don’ t know about?

It has to be cleaning my brushes at the end of the day. I would have to say at this stage in my career I have an extensive selection of brushes and I tend to use them all!!

What has been the proudest moment of your career to date?

I would have to say it was opening my first store, it has always been a dream of mine to help and advise clients on the best products for their skin care and cosmetic needs. I have been able to collect together my favourite brands and have a little gold mine of an area where clients will always get what they need.

Any insider make-up tips you would like to share? Always invest in good skincare and don’t rely on your make up alone to make the perfect complexion. The more you put in the more you get out.
