INTERVIEWCATHYKELLY An acclaimed Irish author who is globally revered, Cathy Kelly loves telling stories and her latest book, 'It Started with Paris', recounts the loves and lives of three women in Bridgeport as Margaret Connolly finds out...
The Gift of the Gab C
athy Kelly is one of the most successful female authors to come out of Ireland since Maeve Binchy. Born in Belfast in 1966, Cathy was raised in Dublin, and now lives in County Wicklow with her husband, John Sheehan and 11-year-old twin boys Dylan and Murray. Cathy initially worked for 13 years as a newspaper journalist with the Sunday World, where she covered news, features, and spent time as an agony aunt and film critic. However, her overwhelming love was always fiction and she published her first international bestseller, ‘Woman To Woman’, in 1997, and a few books later in 2001 she finally decided to leave the world of journalism behind and fully commit to her storytelling. Sixteen books later, Cathy has written about a number of different themes ranging from relationships and marriage to depression and loss, but always with an uplifting message and strong female characters at the heart. In her latest book, ‘It Started With Paris’ these strong female charaters present themselves once again, but as Cathy tells me this is the first time she has tackled a wedding. ‘I loved writing this book. It starts with a proposal on top of the Eiffel Tower and then evolves to tell you more about the lives of those connected to the bride and groom-to-be as they plan their wedding,’ explains Cathy. ‘I have never written a wedding before because I have aways found them to be a little bit boring. Even though I have won an award for the most romantic novel for ‘Someone Like You’, believe it or not I’m not the most romantic person in the world and was never that into the planning of my own wedding, yet strangely as I was writing about it I found myself really getting into it!’ ‘In this book, I wanted to write about young love, older love and divorce. Women who have gone through various different experiences. It’s starts with Leila’s best friend getting engaged on top of the Eiffel Tower in Paris. Leila has been married to an exotic, thrilling young guy, but after a year of marriage he just left her for someone else. While Leila puts a brave face on it all for the sake of her friend, she is nursing a broken heart. Then there’s Leila’s mother and her sister who is a single mother, they live in Bridgeport, an entirely fabricated
place in Ireland. ‘The mother-of-the-groom, Grace, is a divorced head teacher and she has a great relationship with her ex-husband and the book explores this relationship as well as that of Vonnie, an American who came to live in Bridgeport after the death of her husband. Vonnie falls in love with a man who is separated with children and his ex-wife, Jennifer, uses their children as ammunition to try and sabotage his new relationship with Vonnie, so the problems of falling in love again with someone else are also explored in a book that takes on the issue of divorce and how different people cope with it. ‘My latest book is always my favourite and ‘It Started with Paris’ is extra special because it’s a big, new step in my career because it is the first book to be published by my new publisher, Orion. Although I have left loads of wonderful people behind in my previous publishing house, I’m excited to have made this move. ‘To date I have written 16 books. I do a book a year, it’s quite an intense process and between writing the next book, my short stories and the promotion of the new title, as well as being a mum to two twin boys, 12 months isn’t long going in. I know some other authors may publish multiple titles in a year, but that’s never been my style. ‘There are few jobs women can do and be about for their children, so I am so fortunate that I love what I do and I can take the boys to school, pick them up and spend time with them. Luckily, I am able to walk away from my writing and pick up where I left off; I don’t have to take myself away from everyone for days on end to focus. I think my journalistic training has helped and I just write as and when I have the time to. When I leave the boys to school I work and then once they are in bed I can get back to it, but I’m 47 now and while working late into the evening is probably never going to change, I can get very tired! ‘The boys are 11 now, but the biggest shock to me when they were born was not having the time to lie in bed with my morning coffee and a book. Now I get up very early and allow myself 15 minutes to read before I get into the shower and start the day with them. That is my time, my thing. By the time I am going to bed I find I am too tired to read,
so these 15 minutes are sacred to me in the mornings. ‘I do read a huge amount of books. I went through a phase reading everything by French writer Collette, I loved ‘Wild Swans’ by Jung Chang and enjoy reading Monica McInerney’s books. I love books that grasp you and at the minute I find I’m reading a lot more non-fiction. I just recenty finished ‘Do No Harm’ a memoir by Henry Marsh, a neurosurgeon who talks about the pain of things going wrong and the pressures his career have placed him under. I found it to be a really powerful read. I can’t say there is for me one book that stands out over all the others because I find that different books mean something at different times in your life. ‘I’m also a total newspaper and magazine junkie and this stems from my own time as a journalist. I will get lots of ideas from what is going on in the wider world for the characters in my books. I do spend a lot of time on my characterisation and although none of my characters are based on real people they do come to life for me and I feel that they live and breathe, in fact, sometimes I wished they did and I could go for a coffee with them and sort out their problems! ‘I really like to help others and totally advocate female mentorship and women helping other women. You start off in your own career and make mistakes and it’s good to be able to share your knowledge with other writers. I believe the pie is big enough for all of us and it’s nice to think that you might be helping to light someone else’s candle.’ Another way in which Cathy actively demonstrates her desire to help others is through her work as an Ambassador for UNICEF Ireland. Cathy has held this role since 2005 and has spent time in Rwanda and Mozambique. ‘Seeing mothers in the hospitals as their children die from malaria is heartbreaking, but I love being able to offer support through my work and write articles that raise awareness and paint a picture of what life is like for these children who need our help.’ With a new book to promote, Cathy is set to leave her native Ireland very soon for a book tour in New Zealand and Australia and then it’s back to Wicklow and spending time with the characters who will come to life in her next novel - I can’t wait to meet them!

Peter Gilroy did a fantastic job hosting our 30th birthday event. The winner of a NW Best Dressed award himself back in the day, there was no better man to guide us through a Sunday afternoon of fashion and food with a bit of banter and plenty of style. The day itself would not have been possible without the gorgeous girls from Maureen Martin Models who were expertly groomed and madeup thanks to Leisa Stafford, Sharon Watson and the team at Stafford Hairdressing. To round off our afternoon of style, Paul Stafford, took to the floor to discuss this season’s hair trends and answer any hair dilemmas posed to him. This proved to be very informative and a fun way to finish off the day.

T
he winter months can always be a bit gloomy, but that doesn’t mean your wardrobe has to be! The trends for the season ahead are fabulous, and with so many colours, textures and shapes to choose from, there’s no excuse to miss out on making a statement, while keeping warm and cosy this autumn/winter. One of the best places to see the very best of the season’s trends in one place is at the West Coast Cooler FASHIONWEEK shows, happening in just a few weeks from 15-19 October. The event’s ten year celebrations continue with a jam-packed schedule of catwalk shows, seminars and in-store events over five days. One of the fashionistas’ favourite colours this season is blue. It swamped the international catwalks, and will be a key shade on the BFW runway - from both the high street stores and the local boutiques and designers… Coming in every shade – from navy to cobalt and Tiffany to baby, there will be a hue to suit every skin tone. So embrace the winter blues and warm up in this season’s cool colours. The full FASHIONWEEK show schedule is available online at www. belfastfashionweek.com, tickets are priced at £20 or £25 for FROW and are available by calling 028 9024 6609.

Local names help Dr. Martens put its stamp on Belfast
F
ootwear and clothing label Dr. Martens officially marked its arrival in Belfast city centre recently by teaming up with a host of local names, including street artist Visual Waste. The first standalone Dr. Martens store in Belfast was celebrated with a launch party that saw Northern Ireland’s top fashion, music and cultural trendsetters witness the unveiling of a striking in-store artwork. Dr. Martens chose to work with Tandragee-based Visual Waste for his unique take on life in Ulster and his stencil-style street art seen in and around Belfast. His artwork, which features iconic images of Belfast such as the City Hall, Harland and Wolff cranes, Ulster punk icon Terri Hooley and a tribute to the late Colin McQuillan of Runnin’ Riot depicts the province’s anti-establishment spirit, punk rock rebellion and music movements. The artwork has been splashed along the stairwell where customers can view it from walking in to the Corn Market store right up the stairs as they approach the first floor.

he Burberry A/W 2014-2015 catwalk show was full of scarf style. This iconic British brand shows the different ways you can wear your oversized scarf and look effortlessly chic this season, whether you cinch it around the waist or just drape it over one shoulder.

A large printed scarf over both shoulders can double up as a cape.

One of A Kind
This issue we speak to Darina Armstrong, CEO of Progressive Building Society, who is making quite an impact in the UK’s finance sector.
D
arina Armstrong by her own admission isn’t trying to make any standpoint when it comes to women’s rights, but she is in fact the only female in Northern Ireland working at this level in financial services, and one of only two women throughout the whole of the UK. However, Darina doesn’t want the fact that she is a woman to define her role, rather that she, like her male counterparts, has the necessary skills to do a job she is passionate about.
❝Fortunately, the Progressive is quite forward thinking. We celebrate our 100 year anniversary this year, and for almost 20 of these years we have had a female on our board. When I was appointed CEO, Dr Joan Smyth was Chairman – a first for the sector to have females in both positions at the same time.❞ ‘In fact in a sector where there are likely more women working than men, it is surprising that there aren’t more women working at this level, but I don’t think this is the fault of the industry, I just think that not every woman wants this,’ comments Darina. ‘I have many female friends who with a family to raise, don’t want the pressure - it’s just not for them, and that’s fine. ‘Fortunately, the Progressive is quite forward thinking. We celebrate our 100 year anniversary this year, and for almost 20 of these years we have had a female on our board. When I was appointed CEO Dr Joan Smyth was Chairman – a first for the sector to have females in both positions at the same time.’ Darina has always been interested in finance. ‘After A-levels I decided to pursue a career in accountancy. Being a self-professed homebird, I headed to the University of Ulster to study, before going to Queen’s to complete my Postgraduate
Diploma in Accountancy. On qualifying as a Chartered Accountant, after three years working for an accountancy firm, I applied for a job at Progressive and I have not looked back over the last 22 years. Two thirds of our staff are here over ten years, and the Society nurtures and appreciates every employee and I have certainly been testament to that over the years. ‘When I started in the finance department (in a junior role) I had no aspirations to become CEO, but I’ve been fortunate the opportunities have arisen and I have always felt encouraged to take them. ‘In my role as CEO of NI’s largest locally owned financial institution, I am responsible for overseeing the day-to-day running of the organisation. There are 12 branches in NI, as well as the head office in Wellington Place, Belfast. No two days are the same, afterall no two mortgages are the same, constant changes in financial regulations and IT need to be updated and addressed, staff need trained and then there is the continual investment in our branches - we have recently opened new premises in Ballymena - there is always plenty going on to stave of any monotony! ‘I am also on the Council of the Building Societies Association (BSA) and this takes me to London approximately every other month, which is a great networking opportunity with my peers. I am the first female member since the BSA was set up in 1869. As I’ve said, I am not a pioneer for women’s rights by any means, but when the position became available I felt that it was a challenge I had to take on, and as well as being the first female, more importantly for me, I am the first representative from

❝It saddens me that all of the financial services have been tainted over the last few years, yet Progressive has remained in profit the whole time. Progressive is not driven by external shareholder pressure, which means we are free to operate in the interests of our members and the communities in which we are located.❞ Northern Ireland to serve on this council, which is recognised as the voice of the industry. I was appointed in May 2013 and this has given me an opportunity to have the NI perspective heard when meeting with the UK’s policymakers - and even though I might be the only woman on the Council I make sure I get my point across! ‘It saddens me that all of the financial services have been tainted over the last few years, yet Progressive has remained in profit the whole time. Progressive is not driven by external shareholder pressure, which means we are free to operate in the interests of our members and the communities in which we are located, and due to our knowledge of the local marketplace here in NI we have been able to successfully navigate through the downturn. ‘I am proud to be able to say that Progressive is the most ethical financial service provider in NI as judged by a ‘Move Your Money’ survey. We scored 98 percent, which was significantly ahead of our counterparts. What makes the results of the survey even more pleasing is that it was carried out totally independently and included a number of large and small financial services providers from across the sector. All of our staff are passionate about what they do and go that extra mile to ensure customers are receiving the best possible service. It’s great to see their efforts recognised in this way and I look forward to helping them steer the Progressive towards further successes in the future.’

How to Interview You have just landed an interview for a job you really want. Now what? Successful interviewing will be essential in order for you to lock in an offer. Here’s how to interview, including tips and strategies for effective interviewing from preparation through follow up.
Know Your Stuff!
Research should always be your first step. Gathering background information on employers is a crucial element in successful interview preparation. You will need to be prepared to answer the questions ‘What do your know about our company?’ and ‘Why do you want to work here?’ Knowing as much as possible about the company’s past performance and future plans can make your interview more interactive and could be just the leg up you need in a competitive job market. Before the interview review the company’s website and don’t be afraid to contact your prospective employer to request details on the position you are interviewing for or to ask for company literature. Google the company to see what other information is available online.
Practice Makes Perfect
Practice makes perfect (or at least leads to improvement). Practice with a friend and record or videotape your responses so you can replay the interview and see how well you did. Prepare answers to commonly asked interview questions. Doing so will help you analyse your background and qualifications for the position.
48
NW
Behavioral Interviews
Behaviour based interviewing is becoming more common. It is based on the premise that a candidate’s past performance is the best predictor of future performance. Rather than the typical interview questions on your background and experience, you will you need to be prepared to provide detailed responses including specific examples of your work experiences. Emphasise what you can do to benefit the company rather than just what you are interested in.
Ask Questions
You should always have some questions for your interviewer to demonstrate your interest in the position. Prepare a minimum of five questions, some which will give you more information about the job and some which delve deeper into the culture and goals of the company. Remember, you aren’t simply trying to get the job - you are also interviewing the employer to assess whether this company and the position are a good fit for you.
Prepare For the Interview
It’s very important to be on time for the interview. On time means 10 to 15 minutes
early. If need be, take some time to drive to the office ahead of time so you know exactly where you are going. Know the interviewer’s name and use it during the interview. If you're not sure of the name, call and ask prior to the interview. Remember to bring an extra copy of your CV and a list of references.
Look the Part
Appearances shouldn’t matter, but the plain fact is that you are often judged before you’ve even uttered a word. Make sure your shoes are polished, your clothes fit correctly and that your accessories are subtle. Dressing one level above the job you’re applying for shows a desire to succeed.
Stay Calm
During the interview try to remain as calm as possible. Speak clearly and ask for clarification if you’re not sure what’s been asked and remember that it is perfectly acceptable to take a moment or two to frame your responses so you can be sure too fully answer the question. End the interview with a thank you to the interviewer and reiterate your interest in the position.

Dragons, Ostriches and Dodo Birds For those of you running your own business - small of large - Geoff Clarke from Xafinity advises on workplace pensions. state, as pensions are paid for longer and the health care system has to cope with a growing elderly population. The government aims to get more people saving for their later years by making employers responsible for the implementation of workplace pensions and also paying a contribution towards their employees’ retirement pot. So rather than behaving like an ostrich and sticking your head in the proverbial sand, what do you as an employer need to do and by when?
Know your ‘Staging’ date.
Y
ou may have noticed in recent months that a number of Dragons have temporarily left the Den to appear in TV adverts promoting the government’s Workplace Pensions Reforms, commonly referred to as ‘Auto-enrolment’. If you are a business owner with employees, you will need to comply with the rules and set aside a budget to do so. Starting in 2012 with the very largest companies, followed by the smaller ones thereafter, whether you own a supermarket giant or the local corner shop, you will be required to make available a suitable pension scheme, enrol relevant employees, deduct payments from them and make payments yourself. Employers face additional costs in the running of their businesses, not just in the form of pension contributions, which start at one per cent of employees’ qualifying earnings, rising to three per cent by 2018, but also in the administration of complying with the law. Failure to do so may result in financial penalties, fines or legal sanctions and the Pensions Regulator has already taken enforcement action against a number of employers in breach of the rules. The initiative is designed to encourage 20 million workers in the UK without any pension savings to start setting money aside for their retirement, with the added incentive that in most cases, their employers will be required to pay into their pot too. Thanks to advances in medicine, one in four children born today in the UK are expected to live beyond their one hundredth birthday, meaning that retirement lasts for decades rather than just a few years. This places a greater financial burden on the
50
NW
This is the date by which you should have a pension scheme in place for employees. This will have been notified to you by the Pensions Regulator but can be checked by entering your firm’s PAYE number on the relevant page of the Pension Regulators website.
Create a project plan.
Who in your business will be responsible for managing the project? Do you have sufficient resources to do so and still run your business or will you require help from professional advisers? Understand what needs to be done, by whom and by when. Assign tasks and agree timescales.
Check your payroll system.
Not all workers are required to be enrolled to a pension scheme so your payroll system needs to be able to assess your workers, not only at staging date, but during every payroll period thereafter, to see whether circumstances have changed or anyone new now needs to be enrolled.
Select a pension scheme provider.
This is where a professional adviser can really help you. Some schemes are better than others and offer plenty of support to smaller employers to ensure they comply on time with the minimum of inconvenience and cost. A good adviser will steer you towards the scheme which best matches your needs and those of your employees. As demand for providers and advisers will increase, it is advisable to start planning early in order to get yourself into the queue. If you already have a pension scheme in place for employees, check with the provider that they are willing to take on your
additional workers, as many will not do so.
Communicate with your employees. All workers need to be informed of the changes, how these affect them and the choices available. Any decent payroll provider, professional adviser or the pension provider should be able to assist you with this.
Implement the pension scheme with the selected provider, deduct employee payments and add the employer payment. Process any opt-ins and opt-outs. Not all workers need to be enrolled but they still have the right to join your scheme from staging date, so you need to able to manage this and also anyone who decides to opt out of the scheme after being enrolled. Register your compliance with the Pensions Regulator. Once you have implemented your scheme and commenced payments, you need to certify that you have done so. Maintain records. As you may be challenged or audited by the regulatory authorities, it is imperative that you create, maintain and update your records at each stage of the process and on an ongoing basis thereafter. Continually assess your workers. This is not a one off exercise, so you need to have systems and processes in place to deal with new employees and constantly review whether any existing employees have now become eligible for enrolment. The whole process is complicated and there are many pitfalls, so don’t go the way of the dodo bird, instead seek professional advice to ensure you comply with the new rules and allow you to get on with the important matter of running your business. Good luck! Geoff Clarke is a Chartered Financial Planner, Director and head of the Belfast office at Xafinity, one of the UK’s leading Pension & Employee Benefits Consultants. The clinic is long established in the Republic of Ireland, specializing in a comprehensive range of both surgical and non-surgical cosmetic procedures. One of the most indemand treatments right now is the Fraxel Dual treatment.
Registered General Nurse, Aoibhin Cronin: “The Fraxel Dual is a fantastic anti-ageing treatment as it targets the main issue that causes our skin to age - sun damage. The treatment is excellent for all skin types as it improves the general quality and tone of the skin and really helps keep the signs of ageing at bay, treating pigmentation/ skin discolouration and sun spots, as well as poor skin quality and fine lines and wrinkles. It’s simply a super anti-ageing treatment.”
How does Fraxel Dual work? Fraxel works by treating a fraction of the skin at a time where by only the area in need of attention is treated. The treatment introduces a controlled thermal injury to the skin which stimulates the skin to heal itself, causing a surge in new collagen and elastin production.
Results Optimal results take approximately three months to be fully visible, before that fresh new skin which hasn’t been exposed to the elements

Cleansing Powers
W
ho would have thought that a thing that looks like an overgrown electric toothbrush would become an essential beauty tool? Whether you have oily, flaky, sensitive or combination skin, electric cleansers are the answer to better skin, with some brands claiming they are up to six times better than manual cleansing. The brushes give a deep, gentle cleanse and exfoliation, revealing your skin’s natural glow. Northern Woman reviews some of the best brushes on the market.
Clinique Sonic System Purifying Cleansing Brush, £79
The Clinique oval-shaped brush is designed to cover all the contours of the face evenly and target your skin’s trouble areas, and features two types of bristles — one part of the brush is for your cheeks, and the other for your T-Zone, where you’re more likely to have clogged pores. It’s small and handy for travelling. The only slight drawback was the timer, the brush shuts off after 30 seconds. It is waterproof and suitable for all skin types.
Olay Regenerist 3 Point Cleansing System, £39.99
Olay’s popular Regenerist line is a well-regarded anti-ageing regime, so I was keen to see if its cleansing system could turn back the hands of time for me! It looked a bit flimsy at first but had excellent value for its performance, deep cleaning and exfoliation capabilities. Used with the Regenerist cleanser, it frothed nicely and easily removed all my makeup. My skin felt totally refreshed. It has a two speed setting, though since it is battery powered rather than re-chargeable it can be frustrating!
Clarisonic Aria Sonic Skin Cleansing Brush, £155
The gold standard for cleansing brushes! This brush is brilliant, my skin was squeaky clean, less prone to spots and my pores and fine lines appeared less noticeable even after a few days of using it. I also felt that my moisturiser absorbed better and I had to use less of it. The brush head has various speed settings to customise your facial cleanse even for sensitive skins. It was my favourite product of the lot. It isn't cheap but a very wise investment!

Environ Facial or No-Tox!
Responding to ever increasing demands to reduce the visible signs of ageing by more natural and safe methods, professionals’ favourite skincare house Environ has developed The Focus Frown Treatment, the first salon facial specifically designed to soften the frown lines that increase in depth as we get older without resorting to botox injections. The facial provides a safe, alternative approach that facilitates the penetration of active ingredients, Argireline, Leuphasyl and Syn-Ake into the skin to target chemical complexes which soften muscle activity without injections. The treatment helps to reduce muscle tension in the forehead area, so that frown lines become smoother, shallower and less prominent, with many people seeing a difference within three hours after their facial. Ask the Experts... Q. I’m 47 am I too old for fake fur? Sara says... Absolutely not! The quality of faux fur, the texture and look, has improved so much since it’s 90’s ‘fun fur’ counterpart that sometimes it’s difficult to tell if a garment is made from real or faux, which always sends me into a quandary as I am strictly anti-fur. The point is though, faux fur is now as sumptuous, luxurious and expensive looking as the less-ethical real version, taking it from the cheaper, more disposable end of the market through to the middle and high end, with even Karl Lagerfeld now using the fake stuff: “You cannot fake chic but you can be chic and fake fur” It’s a huge trend this season, one label that seemingly came from nowhere is Shrimps, whose colourful faux fur coats were seen on fashion editors, bloggers and models throughout LFW. Shrimps designer Hannah Weiland believes that ‘Everyone can wear Shrimps! Including me 90-year-old nana.’ Her coats and clutches are fun and gorgeous, available on Net-a-porter. Warehouse’s colour-block belted faux fur has a similar feel for those on a high-street budget. For a more understated look, a faux fur gilet in a neutral colour is a very versatile piece and is perfect for the unseasonably warm autumn we are currently enjoying. One forty-something who always wears this look well is the gorgeous Elle McPherson. Ok, so Elle does look great in anything, but this is a lesson in nonchalant, polished chic with a boho edge (isn’t that what everyone strives for?) A gilet over a chunky knit, in black or neutral tones, with skinny jeans and great boots and bag, topped off with swishy hair and sunglasses. Perfection (and she’s two years older than you btw) I’ve noticed some fab versions in TKMaxx recently. I also love them layered over a feminine blouse or leather biker jacket. Go forth and be fuzzy and cosy!

Q. My kids have never had their eyes checked. What’s the best age to get them tested and is there normally a charge? Brian says... Most children have excellent sight and do not need to wear glasses. Some have vision screening done at school (between the ages of 4 and 5). If you think your child hasn’t been screened or you’re concerned make an appointment with your local optometrist. This is free under the NHS for children under 16. We have a range of tests and a child doesn’t even need to read or talk to have a sight test. We try and make it as fun and engaging as possible. So just like our dentistry colleagues, free checks under the NHS allow early intervention and the best possible outcome. www.johnlaverty. co.uk/when-i-grow-up

Q. Is there any such thing as Wash and Wear long hair, I hate blow dried set looking hair and everytime I go to the salon I leave looking like a Barbie Doll... I bring pictures of what I think is natural looking hairstyles but the hairdresser always says “ Oh yeah it looks natural but in reality it probably took ages to get it like that” is this true? I just want my hair to look like it looks when I just wash it at home but maybe a little more tame? Paul says... This is a question I get asked as much by other hairstylists as clients... The answer is, it really depends on your hair, your stylist is probably right, images in magazines are always “styled” even when they are shot in the most natural circumstances, there will be a hairdressing genius attending to every unstructured strand... but with the arrival of great products and low-styling techniques... Everyone can have boho beachy undone sexy touchable hair but at a price... Step 1. Hair Analysis. What type of hair do you actually have? This will have a big impact in the desired look. How natural is natural? Are you product intolerant or are you open to products in order for you to achieve the look you desire? What is low-styling? These are techniques used to achieve more subtle less constructed shapes and looks but still using tools such as dryers, irons and diffusers to create them. Time wealth? How much time you actually spend or want to spend on your hair... This is nearly as important as the hairstyle itself as you need to have realistic expectations of how little or how much is required for certain looks. In a nutshell, the less time you spend on your hair in terms of cutting, colouring styling and finishing will reflect how undone/natural your hair looks... if you are really lucky with the right cut and the right hair this could be as minimal as shampooing and conditioning and a quick towel dry, this is very very rare, most hair needs a little TLC, good advice and a bit of coaxing.
Q. My skincare range doesn’t seem to be working as effectively as it use too? Do I need change my routine? Angela says... It’s Definitely a good idea to reassess your routine approximately twice per year as our skincare needs do change from time to time. Contributing factors that we all face can be changes in season, stress, pollution, and of course natural ageing. It’s not so much about changing your entire routine, or upping the cost, it can be as simple as changing textures, for example changing to a richer texture during the winter months where skin tends to be more dry or dehydrated, or introducing a serum to target a specific concern. Just by adding an exfoliator can have a dramatic results on your skin and boost the performance of your other products. It’s really a case of keeping in touch with your skincare specialist, chatting through what you’re not happy with and finding a solution that not only works for your skin, but also your lifestyle. Don’t get caught up in a lengthy routine with too many products that are not sustainable especially if time is an issue for you.
Q: Can my diet help reduce symptoms of SAD (Seasonal Affective Disorder)? Rachel says... Absolutely! It is thought that the food you eat affects the release of certain hormones from the brain, which in turn affects your mood. Your diet should be: • Low in refined sugary carbs - white bread, cakes and biscuits. • High fibre - whole grains, fruit & veg. • Increase lean protein - fish, chicken and eggs. • Good fats - nuts, seeds and oily fish. • Vitamin D - oily fish such as salmon, sardines, mackerel; eggs, fortified margarines, breakfast cereals and yoghurts. • Tryptophan - an amino acid that your body needs to produce serotonin, a chemical involved with mood, sleep and appetite. Found in lean meat, eggs and bananas. Also ensure you get outdoors, even if it is cloudy. Enjoy a brisk walk and keep well hydrated!

HEALTHCLEANEATING
Come
Clean
‘Clean Eating’ is the word on every fit woman’s lips at the moment, and with good reason! Clean eating stems from the idea of eliminating or reducing all chemicals from the body. This means little to no processed/ packaged foods and getting backto-basics in order to have a healthy body free from toxins.
Y
ou’ve probably heard of clean eating, but you may not know what it is exactly or how to go about cleaning up your diet. Eating clean is a good way to refresh your eating habits: it’s about eating more of the best and healthiest options in each of the food groups – and eating less of the not-so-healthy ones. That means embracing foods like vegetables, fruits and whole grains, plus healthy proteins and fats. It also means cutting back on refined grains, added sugars, salt and unhealthy fats. And since you don’t have to count calories or give up whole food groups, it’s easy to follow. As well as improving your health, eating clean will also help you to lose weight and achieve that flat stomach you’ve always wanted. A body can never be lean unless it’s clean, and toxins stop that happening. Even if you are dieting, if you’re body is toxic you’ll always find it hard to lose weight. Many diets actually make your body more toxic with all their low-fat/high-sugar foods, so it really is best to eat clean.
What to Eat
With so many mixed messages about what we can and can’t eat, here is a breakdown of the foods you should be consuming when you choose to eat clean. FRUIT & VEGETABLES: If it falls from a tree, then it’s safe to say it’s a good option.
64
NW
The idea is to try and eat foods that have not been altered by humans in any way. Try and buy local from the nearest farmers’ market, this way you are guaranteed quality produce, along with supporting your local farmers!
WATER WORKS: Keep yourself hydrated all day long, and the best way to do that is good old fashioned water! Most drinks found in the supermarket are full of sugar, even some orange juice! The best option is to juice your own at home.
LEAN MEATS: Meat is not our enemy. Lean meats are a fantastic source of protein, which creates lean muscle and keeps you feeling fuller for longer. When buying meat, stick to lean, quality meats from your local butcher.
How To Get Started
GRAINS: Think ‘whole’ grains. Things like brown rice, quinoa, rye breads and oats are all good options. Steer clear of ‘white’ breads, pasta and rice – brown is best. FEWER PACKAGED FOODS: Just because it claims to be healthy, it doesn’t mean it’s a good choice. Many packaged foods are a clever marketing ploy, attempting to lure shoppers into buying their product. You will find that there are many hidden nasties in foods found in the supermarket that can negatively impact your health.
Now you know what you should be eating, it’s time to put the wheels in motion to ensure that you stick to your new clean eating regime. CLEAR THE KITCHEN: Okay, it’s time to go through your kitchen cupboards and fridge and cull all the bad stuff. When you rid your home of unhealthy foods, it will make this journey all the easier. Always ensure you read up on the labels too for hidden ingredients that are best avoided.
STOCK UP ON PRODUCE: Replace all the unhealthy items you tossed for nourishing and super clean foods. Remember to stock up on a ton of fresh fruit and vegetables, whole grains and lean cuts of chicken breast or fish for your fridge. Buy some healthy snacks to munch on throughout the day too. Raw nuts are a great option to keep stocked in your pantry or in your handbag. PLAN, PLAN, PLAN: Eating clean is much easier when you are prepared. Consider pre-planning your meals for the week. This could be a task for a Sunday and it will make life so much easier and limit your cooking time during the week. MAKE A LIST: When heading out to do your shopping, be prepared and write up a big list. This will include all your clean eating foods, and your pre-planned meal ingredients. Also, don’t disregard frozen fruit and vegetables. They are a great money saver and frozen fruit is ideal for making smoothies! By sticking to your list, it will help keep you focused and less likely to stock your trolley with unnecessary packets of chips and sweets. ONE STEP AT A TIME: Clean eating for some may be a slight tweak in their everyday eating routine, or for other’s a total lifestyle overhaul. Whatever category you fall under, just remember that Rome wasn’t built in a day. Changing habits is hard to break. Make tweaks here and there, and if you slip up – don’t worry. Just make sure your next meal is super clean. TREAT YOURSELF: Eating clean doesn’t mean you have to rid yourself of all guilty pleasures. There are a number of recipes online for indulgent, yet clean ‘sweet’ treats!

Here are a couple of recipes for those who want to eat clean but need to satisfy those sweet and savoury cravings!
Dark Chocolate Mousse Serves 4-6
Ingredients 1 ripe avocado ¼ cup date paste or 4 medjool dates, pitted 1 tbsp unpasteurized honey 1 cup full fat coconut milk ½ cup organic cacao powder 1 tsp instant coffee ¼ tsp Ancho Chili powder ¼ tsp Himalayan salt 1 tbsp pure vanilla extract Method • Process avocado, date paste (or pitted medjool dates), honey and coconut milk in a small food processor until smooth and creamy. • Add cacao powder, instant coffee, ancho chile powder, salt and vanilla and resume processing until well incorporated. You might have to scrape the sides once or twice to get all the powder to mix in nicely. • Transfer this mixture to the bowl of your stand mixer and whisk on high for 4-5 minutes until light and fluffy. You could also do this with a hand mixer if you don’t have a stand mixer. • Divide the chocolate mousse between 4 to 6 individual dessert bowls, dust lightly with cacao powder or ancho chile powder and refrigerate for 4-6 hours, or up to two days. • Note that this mousse can also be served immediately, but its texture greatly benefits from it sitting in the fridge for at least a few hours.
At a Glance... • Eat whole foods: These are foods that haven’t been tampered with. They are straight from the farm. • Avoid processed foods: These are foods that have a label. Exceptions include whole grain pasta and natural cheeses. • Eliminate refined sugar: This provides nothing but calories. Other sweeteners such as stevia and agave nectar good alternatives. • Eat five or six small meals a day: This revs up your metabolism and reduces the chance that you’ll eat something bad. You should never get so hungry on this plan that you’ll feel deprived or feel the need to cheat. • Cook your own meals: Instead of buying meals in a box, cook meals from scratch. Clean, whole foods need little preparation beyond chopping and sautéing to make satisfying, delicious meals your family will love. • Combine protein with carbs: When you do snack or eat a meal, make sure that meal is balanced. For the most satisfaction from your diet, and so you’ll be less tempted to eat junk food, combine protein with carbs or carbs and fat. This simple act will fuel your body and quash hunger pangs.

L
ouise Scott of French Vintage Vie, her partner Marty and their Labrador Tully chose a 1930’s Art Deco semi-detached house in Bangor for their first home together just under two years ago. They wanted to live in the house for a short period before making any decisions on refurbishing. Less than a year later, they moved out again in order to transform the three bedroom semi
into a comfortable modern home whilst retaining many of the original features. “Finding a house that you love and turning it into a home that you look forward to returning to each day can lead to a contented life!” says Louise. “Understanding what is most important to you and your family will help you make the right choice. For us, location was key.

LIFESTYLEHOUSE We could have afforded a more spacious detached property elsewhere, but we love living a couple of minutes walk from the beach and having cafes, restaurants and shops on our doorstep. This has very much been a lifestyle choice which suits us. We both wanted a period property rather than a new-build which has allowed us to introduce some of my French antique furniture and vintage finds from France.” “France has such an amazing wealth of wonderful furniture and collectables that you just can’t buy here. From grand Louis style chairs and ornate wood and marble tables to irresistible vintage treasures such as worn shutters and enamel jugs – the problem is I want to bring them all home!” says Louise. And when you wander into Louise’s Bangor home, you can certainly detect a little “je ne sais quoi” – from beautiful antique walnut side tables and ornately carved chairs to modern Kartell Louis Ghost chairs and a silver delicate cabriole legged bathroom sink. “Whilst I adore the French style and the fine antique furniture, I don’t want a home like a museum, so I believe clever mixing of vintage finds and your favourite contemporary styles is key. Using your own personal taste and introducing pieces which are special to you will make your home unique. I have chosen a neutral palette of cool whites, greys and blues because it reminds me of being on holiday in France, Portugal and Spain! The neutral colours also create a very calming and relaxing atmosphere. Here and there, splashes of bright colours in a painting, cushion or in a vase of flowers adds interest and colour. Unusual pieces side by side also create interest such as my 1930’s wall clock, found in Toulouse beside a vibrant painting from local artist Geralyn Mulqueen.”

They replaced the kitchen and relocated the bathroom along with upgrading the heating system and triple glazing the stain glass windows. They have retained original features which give the house character such as the curved art deco windows, stain glass, fireplace, interior doors, wood panelling in the hallway and original wooden floors. Louise says “We have done quite a lot of work to the house and always feel there is more to do! But we have created a small simple space we love, in a location we enjoy. SLAVERY
Human trafficking in Northern Ireland made headlines this summer with the discovery and rescue of over 20 trafficked individuals in County Armagh. Unfortunately, this was not an isolated incident and is indicative of a disturbing trend. Lillian McKibbin investigates the prevalence of trafficking in our local communities.

LIFESTYLEHUMANTRAFFICKING
F
or most people, the words ‘human trafficking’ conjure up images of squalor in far-off, underprivileged countries known for human rights violations. Indeed, it is an immensely profitable global phenomenon that has resulted in numerous international treaties and coalitions working to curb its efficacy. However, the problem is much closer to home than previously thought. Human trafficking is on the rise in developed countries around the world, including the UK. Last year 1,746 victims were identified in the UK, up 47% from the year before. Statistics are climbing each year in Northern Ireland as well; in 2013, the National Crime Agency recognised 41 victims, compared with 17 in 2012. The PSNI, Department of Justice NI, and lawmakers in Stormont have all taken note. In June 2013, Lord Morrow introduced the Human Trafficking and exploitation (Further Provisions and Support for Victims) Bill, which aims to provide additional measures of prevention of human trafficking and support for victims. Though the bill has not yet reached the consideration stage, if passed it could greatly affect the trafficking situation in Northern Ireland. The issue is complex, however, and fraught with dissenting opinions. Critics of the bill cite concerns about its clause that would criminalise the purchase of sex. They argue that it conflates voluntary and coercive sex work and could deregulate the sex trade, endangering victims further. But despite the debate, one clear message is emerging from the political fray: human trafficking is a grave human rights violation, and victims need rescue and support in rebuilding their lives.
Identifying trafficked individuals
Part of the difficulty with stemming the tide of trafficking is that it is a hidden crime, says Grainne Teggart, Northern Ireland
Campaigner for Amnesty International. Impoverished and persecuted individuals looking to escape their home countries via migration are especially at risk. Predators can take advantage of people’s desperate situations, luring them to a new country under false pretences of stable work and a better life. “It’s only once they’re in the destination country that victims’ passports are taken off them and the horrors begin,” Grainne explains. In Northern Ireland, the majority of trafficking victims come from Eastern Europe, China or Africa, but there are also cases of internal trafficking of persons from the UK and Ireland. Most often, the trafficking takes the forms of sexual exploitation or forced labour, though in recent years there have also been cases of organ harvesting within the UK – not yet in Northern Ireland. Children are trafficked as well, usually for sexual purposes or for assistance in committing crimes and fraud. Offenders endeavour to cut their victims off from the outside world through intimidation, language barriers or physical confinement. Grainne says that “if forced labourers don’t speak English, they’re not in a position to communicate what conditions they’re being kept under. In cases of sexual exploitation, they’re imprisoned in houses and only come into contact with people who are paying to abuse them.” Even worse, traffickers with ties to victims’ home countries may threaten to hurt family members if victims try to escape, thus fostering an even deeper sense of hopelessness in their captives. Meanwhile, neighbours and passersby are often completely oblivious to the travesties right under their noses. There are subtle warning signs to look for, though, and these clues may help determine whether something is awry in the community. Being proactive and perceptive is one of the best ways to ensure trafficking does not thrive in your area.
Predators can take advantage of people's ❝ desperate situations, luring them to a new country under false pretences of stable work and a better life.
❞
Types of Human Trafficking • Forced prostitution • Sexual slavery • Forced labour (in factories, farms and homes) • Organ harvesting • Forced marriage (bride buying) • Debt bondage (bonded labour)
Red Flags Below is list of warning signs associated with human trafficking, courtesy of Crimestoppers and Amnesty International. • Women and girls who are brought into a house and never seen to leave. • Houses with men frequenting at all hours of the day or night. • Houses with lights on 24/7 or a spicy-sweet smell (these could be cannabis farms, which sometimes utilise forced labour). • A heavy security presence, including barred windows, locked doors, guards or cameras at a premises (this could include a factory, farm or construction site). • People who are living and working at the same address. • People at work who arrive very early and leave very late on a regular basis. • People who are escorted into work by others. • People who show signs of injury, malnourishment or general unkemptness. • People who are isolated from the local community. If you notice any of these indicators or simply intuit that something isn’t right, don’t ignore the signs. It’s better that the situation is investigated – it may be nothing, but it may lead to the rescue of a trafficking victim. Call Crimestoppers anonymously at 0800 555 111, or file your anonymous report online at www.crimestoppers-uk.org.

Granada: a window to the past As the leaves begin to turn brown and fall from the trees, and bank holidays are but a distant memory, thoughts turn to warmer days and a final escape to the sun. In this issue we bring you to the vibrant Andalusian city of Granada.
G
ranada is vibrant city with a bohemian feel and fascinating history. Meandering through the cobbled streets is always the best way to see a city, as you will quickly see how the city wears its history on its sleeve. The Cathedral indicates the city centre and it is also a living example of Granada’s diverse history. Originally the site of the Nasrid Great Mosque of Granada, the current Catholic structure was built over
the top, totally engulfing and replacing the mosque. On visiting we were struck by the abundance of shimmering gold and silver guiled sculptures and chapels, as well as the breathtaking organ, traditionally 18th century Spanish with horizontal trumpets as well as the more familiar vertical pipes.
Don’t Miss
The Alhambra The Alhambra is the jewel in Granada’s
crown and without a doubt its main tourist attraction. When taking in the intricate designs and inscriptions on the interior walls of the palace it is easy to see why. The Palace is the most prominent reminder of the Moorish influence in the city. In its day, it acted as a palace, a fortress and a citadel, the residence of the Nasrid Sultans and top government officials, court servants and the royal guard. Today however, tourist numbers are limited to 6,600 per Alhambra fountain.

LIFESTYLETRAVEL day, and getting tickets at the door can be a challenge to say the least. We had booked ours before leaving for Granada and had opted for an evening tour, having heard that the water and intricate designs were hauntingly beautiful when illuminated. On arrival we were stuck by the sheer size of the fortress perched atop the hill, but rather disappointingly due to our visit occurring in the dark, access to different rooms and gardens was very limited. What we did see were cleverly illuminated rooms with stunningly intricate hand carved designs, and the various flowing streams and fountains throughout added to a sense of calm. However, do be prepared to share your experience with hordes of people who seem to make their way around the Alhambra looking through the lens of a camera rather than soaking up the atmosphere and appreciating the history and reason behind what is to be seen. Sierra Nevada Standing in the cosmopolitan city centre you are surrounded by office blocks and chain stores, but looking along to the end of the streets is the constant reminder of Granada’s unique location. Glimpses of the striking Sierra Nevada mountains can be viewed from almost anywhere in the city in between towering buildings. The geographical location of Granada is appealing to many visitors. The coast attracts visitors in the early months of the year due to its mild temperatures, but only an hour’s drive away in the Sierra Nevada mountains is a thriving ski resort, perfect for visitors who prefer being active rather than lounging by the pool. During the hot months of the summer, when there is no snow, locals still make the most of their local environment by cycling and hiking the hills above the city. Although cycling up a
Sierra Nevada.
mountain in the Spanish sunshine did not appeal so much to me, I found the perfect compromise, Infinito eBikes (http://www. infinitoebikes.com/), who offer electric bike tours taking in the beautiful scenery of the Sierra Nevada. The tour lasted about two hours, and although it was hot, I was pleased the electric bikes took little to no effort to get moving. We stopped frequently for refreshments and the guide took us to the most beautiful spots for photographs, and it made me feel very virtuous having actually left my sun lounger for a morning of activity.
Food and Drink
There is a lot more to Granada than the Alhambra, and the food and drink are sure to bring me back soon. All over Spain, mealtimes are drawn out family affairs and it is no different in Granada. From early evening onwards, if you order a drink, tapas
will be served as a matter of course, in fact in some of the smaller towns surrounding Granada you may be hard pushed to find a restaurant serving a meal as we know it. The locals simply nibble on these small sharing plates with each drink they order and stretch out the mealtime late into the night. If you are a fan of calamari you will be at home in Granada, as plenty of seafood, and rather strangely potatoes seem to be the order of the day. For a more refreshing alternative to the traditional sangria cocktail, try tinto de verano, a mix of red wine and lemonade, which if you’re drinking over a long stretch of time remains light and refreshing. I hope this won’t be my last mention of this beautiful city, and if you’re stuck for last minute sun inspiration, I couldn’t recommend this energetic city highly enough. I’ll be dreaming about it until next year.

he new BMW 2 Series Active Tourer sees BMW for the first time expand its portfolio to introduce frontwheel-drive and three cylinder engines in the model line-up. The Active Tourer combines dynamism, style, elegance and practicality in one cleverly packaged car. New lightweight turbocharged engines with three and four cylinders, a comprehensive package of BMW EfficientDynamics ensures a driving experience that allows sporty performance and incredible efficiency. Practical shouldn’t mean prosaic. Despite the compact exterior length, the new BMW 2 Series Active Tourer offers luxury-class legroom, particularly in the rear, and a wealth of features for those with active lifestyles, or needing to transport families. The versatile luggage compartment’s capacity can be enlarged from 468 to 1,510 litres, with a flat loading floor, and the 40:20:40 split-folding rear backrest fitted as standard exemplify this model’s excellent everyday practicality. Flexibility is further enhanced by a sliding rear seat, allowing either knee room or luggage space to be increased as required, and its backrest can be adjusted to recline for the three rear seats or sat more upright for extra luggage space. Access to the luggage compartment is easy thanks to the large, broad, wide-opening tailgate, which also features push button automatic opening and closing, or the Smart-Opener function where a quick flick of the foot sets it in motion. One particularly clever touch is the foldable boot floor that conceals a storage compartment with a handy multifunction tray. Lashing points and bag hooks, one on either side of the rear compartment, are further features which add to the practicality of the boot space. he third-generation Renault Twingo may have a familiar name and the same fun-to-drive qualities of its predecessors, but links with the past stop there. In every other respect it’s all-new and radically different, introducing a number of firsts for the model – a rear-mounted engine and rear-wheel drive. It is also available with five doors for the first time. The two new engines on offer bring substantial improvements in fuel economy and emissions compared with the previous model, culminating in the 67.3mpg and 95g/ km of CO2 for the 1.0-litre Dynamique SCe 70 model with Stop & Start. By mounting the engine at the rear, cars can be made shorter, which in turn means they fit into smaller parking spaces and are more nimble when nipping through traffic. The potential downside is that a rearmounted engine can steal boot space, while people brought up on front-wheel-drive cars might worry about the handling implications and the consequences in an accident. Renault’s engineers and designers have overcome these obstacles ingeniously. The engine is mounted at an angle so that it does not intrude into the boot, and in a rear-end collision it is pushed beneath the passenger cell. Meanwhile, Electronic Stability Control overcomes any possibility of a rear-wheel skid in slippery conditions.
Year of the rear?
In keeping with the downsizing of the new Twingo, Renault has taken the opportunity to downsize the engines with a range of ultra-efficient three-cylinder 12-valve units. An all-new naturally aspirated SCe 70
1.0-litre Renault engine powers all but one model in the line-up. Renault also offers a Dynamique TCe 90 version at the top of the range, powered by a 0.9-litre turbocharged engine developing 90 hp at 5,500rpm.

Mr. Turner
The Book of Life
Rosie and Alex have been best friends since age six. Just as they’re discovering the joys of teenage nights on the town, they’re also discovering dating disasters. As they dream of travelling the world and new adventures, they decide to take a leap of faith, both on life and on each other, and leave their small British town for Boston together to attend university. But fate has other plans, and over the next twelve years their lives change in all kinds of ways, both expected and unexpected. There are new experiences, new relationships, and all of the other ups and downs that life brings.
Mr. Turner explores the last quarter century of the great if eccentric British painter J.M.W. Turner (1775-1851). Profoundly affected by the death of his father, loved by a housekeeper he takes for granted and occasionally exploits, Turner forms a close relationship with a seaside landlady with whom he eventually lives incognito in Chelsea. Throughout this, he travels, paints, stays with the country aristocracy, visits brothels, is a popular if anarchic member of the Royal Academy of Arts, and is both celebrated and reviled by the public and by royalty.
From producer Guillermo del Toro and director Jorge Gutierrez comes an animated comedy with a unique visual style. The Book of Life is the journey of Manolo, a young man who is torn between fulfilling the expectations of his family and following his heart. Before choosing which path to follow, he embarks on an incredible adventure that spans three fantastical worlds where he must face his greatest fears. Rich with a fresh take on pop music favourites, the film encourages celebrating the past while looking forward to the future.
The Taxidermist’s Daughter
Johnny McClintock's War
Elsa Schiaparelli: A Biography
Sussex, 1912. At twenty-two, Constantia Gifford lives with her father in a decaying house: it contains all that is left of Gifford’s once world-famous museum of taxidermy. The string of events that led to the museum’s closure are never spoken of and an accident has robbed Connie of any memory of those days. After a woman is found dead in the village churchyard, Connie struggles to discover who is responsible - and why the incident is causing memories to surface from her own vanished years. Does she know the figure she sees watching from the marshes? And what is the secret that lies at the heart of Blackthorn House.
As the outbreak of the First World War looms closer, John Henry McClintock, a northern Irish Protestant by upbringing, meets Rose Flanagan, a Catholic, at a gospel tent mission – and falls in love with her. John Henry and Rose manage to overcome all opposition and, finally, marry. But a few years later comes the hardest blow of all. Can John Henry still hang on to his faith in God?

Northern Woman Congratulates… Lynsey Gordon and Gary Campbell filled their wedding day with personal touches at the Galgorm Spa and Resort.
W
ith lush greenery and the rushing Galgorm River as their scenic backdrop, Lynsey and Gary were thrilled to spend their wedding day at the Galgorm Spa and Resort. The day’s festivities kicked off early for Lynsey, as her hair and make-up team were none other than her colleagues at Natural Hair Company and Natural Beauty. The morning felt like a party for Lynsey, who was excited to have her work family surrounding her throughout the day — including at the ceremony and reception! Torn between wearing her hair up or down, Lynsey opted for the best of both worlds and wore her hair in an elegant half-up style. A 1920s veil and custom designed headpiece made by Georgia from Quality Stitch gave her an air of vintage sophistication and a lace gown from Perfect Day completed the look. The bridesmaids glowed in their dresses from Coast, while groomsmen looked dashing in suits from Groom Banbridge. The groom also opted for a suit from Groom Banbridge, his a handmade ensemble. The newlyweds added fun extras for their guests throughout the day, including a Taylor’s Ice Cream van at the Shankill Parish Church in Lurgan and a photo booth at the reception. During dessert, the bride and guests were delighted by a surprise appearance by the hilarious May McFettridge, followed by the band This Way Up. As a final hurrah, the bride and groom hosted a barbecue the next day in the Galgorm’s Mulberry Garden for their guests and parents, Brian and Lily Gordon and Trevor and Maureen Campbell.

ONELASTTHING Can you describe a typical day?
I’m in work at 6.30am for the breakfast show, and ready to present my first news at 7am. Until 10am, I am lucky to spend my morning chatting to my co-host Stephen Clements. After the show, I may stay in the office to read and write the news bulletins, or head out reporting.
How do you balance your personal and work Life?
Keeping a work/life balance is really important to me and one of the perks to starting work so early is that I often finish early too. I’ve just bought my first home, so it means I can get back to unpacking – which seems to be an endless task! I’m always busy on week nights, whether it’s helping out with a swimming club for children and adults with physical/learning disabilities, out on the Lagan with Belfast Rowing Club, or playing netball with Antrim Ladies.
What is the most enjoyable part of your job? Any boring bits?
A Day in the Life... Sara Neil, broadcast journalist & breakfast show co-host at Citybeat. How did get you get into journalism/radio presenting?
I was working abroad after my degree, but I decided it was time to get a real job. So I came home, finished an MA in Journalism, and started out in local radio, where I did everything from reading the news to presenting lifestyle shows. I then spent two years in UTV, learning from some of Northern Ireland’s best reporters, before making the jump across the street to Citybeat.
What do you consider being your biggest story to date?
I love getting out and about, and I’ve reported on some huge stories. I covered the Liam Adams trial, both for Citybeat and

for Republic of Ireland station Newstalk, and interviewed Matt Baggott in his last day as Chief Constable of the PSNI. I’ve also had some great stories that have come from talking to real people, rather than politicians.
Have you interviewed any big celebrities?
I’ve interviewed a a few celebs, from Ed Sheeran to Dr Christian and Dr Pixie from Embarrassing Bodies. I’m normally fairly calm about it – we’re all here to do a job, but I’ll admit to being completely starstruck when I met the Manic Street Preachers. I’m a huge fan of the band, and to chat with James Dean Bradfield and Nicky Wire was a dream come true. They came across as two normal blokes, who just love what they’re doing.
My work days are so jam packed there is no room for boring bits! I have a great laugh with Stephen on and off air, and the listeners are great at tweeting, texting or calling into the show, so it means no morning is ever the same. And the nature of news is that it’s so unpredictable, I could be out interviewing government ministers, or local sporting heroes, or researching a story from the office.
What has been the proudest moment of your career to date?
I’ve had so many amazing moments so far, but the one that still makes me smile is St Patrick’s Day earlier this year. Thousands of people turned out at Custom House Square for the Belfast City Council celebrations, which Stephen and I were lucky enough to host. Everyone was in great form and enjoying themselves. It was fantastic to look out from the stage and see people smiling, waving their shamrock flags, and singing along to the Citybeat music.
Any advice for someone considering a career in journalism/radio presenting?
It’s not an easy industry to get into, but if it’s really what you want to do then be persistent. It will pay off when potential employers remember your name because you’ve already been in touch with them. And like all jobs, it’s nice to be nice. Northern Ireland is so small, and you always want to be remembered as someone who was easy to work with, enjoyed their job, and worked hard.
