Let’s look at the problem simply

HeatLossfrom Windows: • Warm air moves toward coldglass. • Heatis lost through unprotected glass. Thefacts regarding Window coverings: • Poorly-fitted curtains lose heat. • Well-fitted curtains trap heat.

WINDOW COVERINGS

Poorly fitted curtains lose heat.

Well fitted curtains with pelmet trap heat Let’s discuss the three best optionsfor heat retentionfor yourwindows:

1. Lined Drapes. There is adisclaimer here. If you want maximum heatretention, you must hang them accordingtothefollowing method: • Floortoceiling andextendedeach side of the glass. • If youcan’t mountyour tracksator on the ceiling, then (don’t laugh)a good oldfashioned pelmet is your best friend. • Theweight of drapery or linings is less important than the fitting method.Even a light-weightfabric will give good heat retention if the window is sealedbythe fabric- top, bottom and either side.

2. Whisper® blindsfrom Weathermaster®with Honeycombconstruction. For best results, these should sit inside the window frame. They come in three differentcell options and each hasa different thermalrating known as R values. These are the only blinds that have a calculated R value.

3.Roman Blinds.LinedRoman blinds mounted abovethe windows andextendedeach side of theglass will givegood heatretention. Make sure tohave them finish below the window frame when in the lowered position.

All of these optionsworktobeatthecold because they seal the window stopping thecold air/warm airreverse chimney effect*. *Reverse chimney effect:

Warm Air moves towards thecold window then travels down theback of the curtain and pushes thecold air down and into theroom creatinga continuous flow of cold air.

This is why havingyour curtains mounted just abovethe window and thefabric finishing just below the sill will not give youthe best heat retention. All this does is createa chimney for cold air flow. Call into theFrazerhurstshowroomat146Lower DentStand discuss howto get your homewarmfor winter.
