Category A and E - By attending the Pesticide Recertification workshop at the Northern Green Expo on Friday, January 11, you are completing the recertification requirements in Categories A - Core and E - Turf and Ornamentals. This workshop has been approved by the Minnesota Department of Agriculture (MDA). Licensed applicators with Categories A and E who last attended a recertification workshop in 2011, and newlicensed pesticide applicators in 2012, must attend an MDA-approved workshop in 2013. By attending the Pesticide Recertification track and completing the on-site attendance documentation, applicators will obtain recertification credit. The morning and afternoon start with general sessions that are required for all recertifying applicators. There are also breakout sessions where participants can choose sessions of interest. Applicators must attend the entire Pesticide Recertification track (7 general sessions plus 1 break-out session) to obtain MDA recertification credit. Attendance will be monitored. The MDA reserves the right to deny recertification credit to participants who arrive later than 30 minutes after the start of the program or who are absent during substantial portions of the program. Workshop participants should bring license identification cards to the workshop. Category F (Aquatics) - The Northern Green Expo is again offering a Category F session at the 2013 Northern Green Expo on Thursday, January 10 from 2:00pm – 3:50pm. In order for licensed applicators to get credit for Category F - Aquatics, they must attend both Thursday afternoon Aquatics Pesticide Recertification and the Friday Pesticide Recertification. ATTENTION: Everyone seeking Pesticide Recertification must report to the MDA General Session by 7:30 a.m. All sessions are also open to attendees who are not seeking Pesticide Recertification, as space allows. Believing that there are far too many untried and largely untested new plants, he suggests that choosing fewer but better plants will lead to greater success. This is largely the message in his new book, Blooms Best Perennials and Grasses which also points out how knowing the origins of plants can help you make the right decisions for your garden. Bloom also believes perennials and grasses are underused as part of the mix with shrubs and conifers in many of our gardens, and will explain how they can be used to create more impact in the garden.

Turfgrass Research Update Eric Watkins, Sam Bauer

The turfgrass research group will update you on the latest research being conducted at the Turfgrass Research, Outreach, and Education (TROE) Center and in field settings throughout the state. Topics will include: low-input turfgrass species, breeding for winter hardy perennial ryegrass, fine fescue cultivar evaluations for golf course fairways, roadside salt-tolerant turf research, home lawn conversion to low input species, use of glyphosate in a weed management program, and National Turfgrass Evaluation Program trials. We will also give overviews of several new projects that have recently been funded. In addition, we will discuss the social media tools that we are using to relay turfgrass science information, including options that could be used by professional turfgrass managers.

During his opening keynote at the Northern Green Expo, Shelby will share why he’s become such a proponent for personal and corporate action; and, furthermore, why green industry professionals are uniquely positioned to make a positive difference for the environment as well as the understanding among the populace about what can be done to act in an environmentally sustainable fashion. Conifers that Grow on You: How to Make the Most of Conifers in the Landscape and Garden Adrian Bloom

Conifers can be the mainstay of the year round garden, but which conifers to use and how to best use them? If, when and how should they be pruned and maintained? Many turfgrass managers have considered no -mow, low-input turfgrass areas or are having issues with their current areas. This seminar will take a look at how different conversion methods and different turfgrass species performed when transitioning from maintained Kentucky bluegrass to a no-mow, low-input turfgrass. You will gain insight on conversion methods and turfgrass species that best reduce broadleaf weed invasion during and after establishment, which best provides an aesthetically pleasing seedhead (a trait many no-mow areas are known for), which best resists falling over and becoming matted down and more. We will also discuss continued maintenance practices of no-mow, low-input areas that best maximizes long term appeal and value.

Is it Time to Rethink Tall Fescues for Sports Turf? Eric Watkins

Tall fescue has traditionally been thought of as an undesirable species in the Upper Midwest. Fortunately, decades of plant breeding efforts have resulted in turf-type cultivars that can perform very well in the northern United States. Recently, there has been an increase in tall fescue use as a turf in Minnesota and surrounding states, primarily for lawns. Due to their excellent tolerance of wear and traffic, exceptional performance during drought, and good turfgrass quality, these new cultivars could present opportunities for sports turf managers. However, there are a number of management challenges that a turf manager would encounter when utilizing this species in cold climates. Watkins will discuss ongoing research projects, cultivar evaluation results, and germplasm improvement efforts from the University of Minnesota and other turfgrass research programs.

Minimizing turf irrigation needs has been a long sought after goal for turfgrass managers. It is more evident today than ever before that the goal of saving water is a necessity. Along with the innovations in new drought tolerant turf species, soil amendments continue to improve and show potential for water management and enhanced turf quality. Soil amendments can be defined as any additive placed directly into the soil profile which can create a better growing environment for the turf by modifying the soil. This presentation will focus on types of soil amendments available, their characteristics, uses, and research evaluating their potential in divot mixes and fairway incorporation trials.

Color is the name of the game, in the garden center as well as the landscape. Lonnee will present the best of the best in shrubs that will provide a pop of color to Minnesota landscapes. With bright foliage, incredible flowers and beautiful berries there is something for every garden.

Green Roofs, Part 2: Plant Design, Plant Materials and Maintenance Nathalie Shanstrom

Planting rooftops can offer many benefits, including stormwater management, reduction of building heating and cooling costs, wildlife habitat, improved air quality and aesthetics, and additional open space where open space is scarce but rooftops are plentiful. This presentation will address how to choose plants that will best meet green roof project goals, as well as how to install and maintain green roof plants. While many of the same horticultural principles of planting at grade apply to green roofs, there are many additional factors to consider on a roof. This presentation will give an overview of some of the challenges and considerations unique to planting design and maintenance of green roofs. Case studies will illustrate the wide range of plants, goals, and aesthetics possible on green roofs.

Dr. Neil Anderson is a floriculture breeder/geneticist (associate professor) who directs the herbaceous perennial breeding program at the University of Minnesota. Anderson also has experience in the commercial flower seed industry as a flower breeder and new crop specialist. He directs the herbaceous perennial winter hardinesss trials (Minnesota Tough & Terrific™ program). His areas of expertise include new crop development, winter hardiness, reproductive biology, interspecific crossing, and preventing invasiveness. He recently (2010-2011) returned from a 1-year Fulbright sabbatical leave in the Czech Republic.

His research program is focused on winter hardiness and invasiveness of herbaceous perennials.

Darrel Apps Garden Adventures Darrel Apps is a career horticulturist who has introduced 390 daylily cultivars. He holds three degrees from the University of Wisconsin and has worked at the University of Kentucky, The Pennsylvania State University and Longwood Gardens. Later in his career, he started his own specialty nursery, Woodside Nursery, which was sold in 2007. He is the breeder of several popular re-bloom daylilies: ‘Pardon Me,’ ‘Happy Returns,’ ‘Rosie Returns,’ and ‘Apricot Sparkles.’

Adam Arvidson Treeline Adam Regn Arvidson is a landscape architect and freelance writer based in Minneapolis. He is the founder of Treeline, a design/writing consultancy, and his articles on landscapes, planning, architecture, and the environment have appeared in numerous national and regional magazines. He is the recipient of the ASLA's Bradford Williams Medal for excellence in landscape architectural writing and is a Fellow of the ASLA. His book on environmentally sound landscaping was released in September 2012.

Roger Axel is a building official with the City of New Hope. He has 30+ years combined construction and inspection experience including single and multi-family residential, educational, industrial, business and mercantile occupancies. He holds a bachelor of science degree in industrial education from the University of Minnesota and an associate in applied science degree in building inspection technology from Inver Hills Community College. He is a State of Minnesota Certified Building Official, International Code Council Certified Building Official, Building Inspector, Mechanical Inspector, Plumbing Inspector and Plans Examiner and Accessibility/Usability Specialist. He also spends time in the classroom as a International Code Council Instructor and adjunct faculty at local community colleges teaching building inspection technology classes, and an instructor for the Housing and Building Inspection Institute at UW-Madison College of Engineering. He also serves as an instructor for MN Licensed Residential Contractor continuing education seminars. He is an active member of the Association of MN Building Officials, the 10,000 Lakes Chapter, MN Building Permit Technicians and the Upper Great Plains Region III Chapters of the International Code Council.

John Ball South Dakota State University Dr. John Ball is a professor of forestry and extension forestry specialist at South Dakota State University where he also serves as the campus arborist. He also serves as the forest health specialist for the South Dakota Department of Agriculture. He previously managed tree care and landscaping companies in the upper Midwest and New England.

Speaker Biographies was the management of a 52-acre wetland treatment system designed to remove nutrients from stormwater runoff. He served in the same position for Dakota County Soil and Water Conservation District where he worked with municipalities to mitigate the impacts of development on aquatic resources, and assisting municipalities and watershed management organizations with water quality management planning.

He was then the water resources manager for Three Rivers Park District where he worked to mitigate the impacts of development on the quality of lakes in the park system. He completed extensive research on the quality of runoff water from residential areas, lawns and golf courses, and on urban soil compaction mitigation. Barten currently serves as the director of natural resources management for Three Rivers Park District.

Sam Bauer University of Minnesota Extension Sam Bauer is an extension educator in horticulture with the University of Minnesota Extension. His area of focus is turfgrass science in the urban environment.

Adrian Bloom Blooms Nurseries Ltd. Adrian Bloom is a lifelong gardener and past owner of the world-renowned Blooms of Bressingham nursery in England. Jim Calkins University of Minnesota Dr. Jim Calkins earned his bachelorâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s, masterâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s, and Ph.D. degrees from the University of Minnesota and is wellknown for his research, extension, and teaching activities through the Department of Horticultural Science at the University of Minnesota. Calkinsâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; research activities have focused on a variety of nursery production and landscape management practices and he has taught numerous classes

including nursery management, plant propagation, woody and herbaceous landscape plants, and, most recently, landscape design and implementation and landscape operations and management. He specializes in nursery production methods and sustainable landscape design and management. He currently serves as the chair of the Minnesota Department of Agriculture's Minnesota Noxious Weed Advisory Committee (NWAC) and strongly believes that there are no bad plants, only good plants used in the wrong locations.

Bob Cashman Ball Horticultural Company Bob Cashman is a twenty-six year veteran sales representative for Ball Horticultural Companies, a leading breeder and distributor in the horticultural industry. His career started very young where he grew up in a family greenhouse. He received his bachelor of business administration degree from the University of Minnesota, with minor studies in horticulture. Cashman has served as an officer and then President of the Minnesota Commercial Flower Growers Association as well as on the board of the North Central Florist Association and the Commercial Flower Growers Committee of the MNLA. Yearly trips to the west coast for the breeder trials (known as the west coast pack trials), keeps him up to date on what is new in the market place. An avid gardener, he travels to several trial sites in the Midwest during the summer, he gets the opportunity to observe actual summer performance on the new varieties. This gives him the insight on which plants will be successful for the grower and consumers of Minnesota and the surrounding areas.

Matt Cavanaugh PBI Gordon Corporation Matt Cavanaugh received his undergraduate degree in horticulture with an emphasis on turfgrass management from Kansas State University. After graduating, Cavanaugh returned home to Minnesota and worked as an assistant golf course superintendent in the Twin Cities area from 2002-2011. While working as an assistant, he also pursued his masters degree in applied plant science at the University of Minnesota. In December 2011, he was hired by the PBI Gordon Corporation to work in their professional products division. Matt and his family reside in the Twin Cities area.

Kevin Cavanaugh is a pesticide management advisor with the Minnesota Department of Agriculture. Cavanaugh coordinates Minnesota's sensitive crop registry program and is involved with urban pesticide issues and immigrant farmer training. He has many years of experience in applying integrated pest management (IPM) in commerical field crops, orchard fruits, vegetables, and urban landscapes. Previous positions held by Cavanaugh include Minnesota Crop Improvement Association, University of Minnesota Extension, Cornell University Cooperative Extension, and private consulting where he conducted pest management training and problem solving. His professional training includes a B.S. in soil science and IPM from the University of Minnesota and a M.S. in plant pathology from the University of Illinois.

Erik Christiansen

Carolyn Dindorf is a limnologist and vice president of Fortin Consulting, Inc., a small environmental consulting company. She holds a B.A. with double majors in biology and chemistry and an M.A. in biology with a limnology emphasis from St. Cloud State University. Carolyn worked for the Minnesota Pollution Control Agency and Hennepin Conservation District prior to joining Fortin Consulting, where she has worked for 9 years. Fortin Consulting has been working with the MPCA, MWMO and technical advisory teams to develop professional training and certification for winter maintenance and has delivered trainings around the state and in several other states. Fortin Consulting has trained over 4,000 maintenance workers on winter maintenance best practices.

EC Design Group Erik Christiansen is president of EC Design Group, Ltd., an irrigation design and water management resource company with over 30 years of turf and irrigation related experience backed by over 400 projects. For over 30 years, Christiansen has been actively involved in the golf and commercial irrigation industry. He started out in the golf course industry at Willow Creek Golf Club, a 36-hole operation, moving on to irrigation contracting and distribution of golf and commercial irrigation products before finally organizing EC Design Group, Ltd. in 1993. She has worked for BioWorks and Chemtura as a technical service representative, as a regional extension agent for the Alabama Cooperative Extension Service and as an IMP specialist in the nursery industry. Faver holds a B.S. degree in entomology from Texas Tech University and an M.S. degree in botany from Eastern Illinois University. Her primary responsibilities are helping growers succeed with their IPM programs, providing technical assistance to clientele, and developing problem solving tools for the industry, managing domestic field trials, and the evaluation of new technologies and new products.

Michael Glassman is an award-winning landscape designer and owner of one of northern California's most prestigious design firms. He has worked for more than 30 years in landscape design, waterworks, and creative elements that enhance outdoor living environments. He received his degree in landscape design and horticulture from the University of California at Davis and studied at LaNapoule Art Foundation in Southern France. In addition, Glassman was a co-host and primary designer for Discovery Home Channel's series Garden Police for two years. Part environmental evangelist, part landscape design coach and connoisseur, he also appeared regularly on HGTVs Gardening by the Yard with Paul James. Rob Golembiewski Bayer Environmental Science Dr. Rob Golembiewski is a greens solutions specialist for Bayer Environmental Science with the responsibility of providing technical expertise for the turf & ornamental industry. Most recently, he served as the turfgrass specialist at Oregon State University. Golembiewski received his B.S. and M.S. from Michigan State University and his Ph.D. from The Ohio State University. Bonnie Harper-Lore Restoration Ecologist, Ret. In 1980 Bonnie earned an M.S. degree from the University of WisconsinMadison in the study of restoration and management of native plant communities. Before and after that degree, she worked in Minnesota’s landscape industry for 10 years, serving on the Minnesota Nurserymen Association’s research committee. Harper-Lore taught Ecological Principles of Design at the University of MN for 9 years. Overlapping jobs, she worked with the Minnesota Department of Transportation (MnDOT) where she began a program of roadside native plantings in 1986. In 1993, this work forwarded her to the Federal Highway Administration (FHWA) to manage a national vegetation management program serving all 50 State DOTs as technical resource, policy support and research grantor. In 1993, the FHWA joined 16 other agencies in an unprecedented partnership called the Federal Interagency Committee for the Management of Noxious and Exotic Weeds (FICMNEW). Harper-Lore spent most of her career applying science and technology to roadside problems, especially weed issues. She currently serves on the Invasive Species Advisory Committee to the National Invasive Species Council.

Jason Inskeep is the principal at Adsoka. His experiences as a leader of marketing departments and in senior roles at advertising agencies serve clients well in developing strong marketing messages and tactics. Adsoka is a brand innovator; the agency concentrates on interactions between the organization and its market to uncover consumer insights that marketers envy.

Brad Jakubowski Doane College Brad Jakubowski has been involved with the green industry for over 25 years, working within the residential/ commercial, golf course and sport field areas. He is currently an instructor of environmental sciences for Doane College in Crete, Nebraska. Previously, he directed the two-year sports turf management program for the University of Nebraska and helped them develop their new turfgrass and landscape management degree program. He is a 10-year member of the Sports Turf Managers Association (STMA) and co-founder of the STMA Student Challenge. He especially enjoys working with industry and conducting educational outreach programs.

Speaker Biographies expert on zebra mussels and other aquatic invasive species (AIS), with specialized expertise in public education. For nearly two decades, he has coordinated the AIS program for the University of Minnesota Sea Grant Program in Duluth. He brings an outcomes-based approach to AIS outreach through a unique lens of human behavioral science, social marketing, environmental education, and program evaluation. Areas of interest include learning theory, environmental psychology, and behavior interventions.

Jensen helped create a national campaign, Habitattitude TM , which educates aquarists and water gardeners encouraging actions to prevent the release of aquarium fish and plants. In collaboration with partners, he also leads implementation of Stop Aquatic Hitchhikers! TM, another successful behavior intervention campaign aimed at preventing AIS spread by boaters and anglers. In addition, he has published many award-winning research and educational materials and is a member of the Minnesota Invasive Species Advisory Council.

Carolyn Jones BFG Supply Company Carolyn Jones has been a sales representative with BFG Plant Connection since 2005. She has a B.S. in horticulture from the University of Minnesota, and worked in sales and management with a wholesale grower for 18 years before joining BFG. She also served on the MNLA Greenhouse and Herbaceous Growers Commitee for several years.

Laura Jull University of WisconsinMadison Dr. Laura Jull is an associate professor and extension specialist for woody ornamentals in the Department of Horticulture at the University of Wisconsin-Madison. She received her B.S. degree in horticulture from Michigan State University and M.S. and Ph.D. degrees in horticulture from North Carolina State University. Her expertise includes woody plant selection and evaluation of plants for urban tolerance, invasiveness potential of woody plants, dwarf and unusual conifers for the landscape, and environmental stress physiology. She teaches courses at UW-Madison in woody plant identification, plant propagation, and arboriculture and landscape maintenance. A native of metropolitan Detroit, Jull has worked in the ornamental industry for nearly 30 years. She is the faculty advisor for numerous undergraduate students as well as the undergraduate Horticulture Club.

Rock Kelly Bachman's, Inc. Rock Kelly holds a B.S. in horticulture from South Dakota State University and had several years of bareroot nursery production experience before becoming production manger of Bachman's nursery growing facility in Farmington.

Jim Kerns University of Wisconsin Madison Jim Kerns is an assistant professor and extension specialist in the Department of Plant Pathology at the University of Wisconsin-Madison. His program focuses on the biology and management of fungal diseases of cool-season turfgrass, specifically dollar spot, snow molds, summer patch, and rust. Currently the program has three graduate students, two research technicians and numerous undergraduates working to refine fungal disease management. Each year, Jim's program conducts 20 to 30 different fungicide efficacy trials and his program also houses the Turfgrass Diagnostic Lab. The diagnostic lab receives 200 to 400 samples per year from all over the U.S. Kersn is also the lead instructor for pesticide applicator training for turf and landscape professionals in Wisconsin. Each year he gives 40 to 50 talks on turfgrass disease management throughout the U.S. and internationally.

Skip Kincaid Davey Resource Group Skip Kincaid has a wide range of urban forestry experience and is responsible for assisting municipalities, businesses, utilities, attorneys, architects, and engineers with the performance of tree risk assessments; tree appraisals; storm damage assessment projects; tree preservation plans on

Speaker Biographies construction sites; urban forestry master plans; ordinance writing; and expert witness testimony. In addition to numerous municipal projects, other recent project sites include National Park Service projects at the Gateway Arch grounds in St. Louis, Missouri and the Vanderbilt Mansion National Historic Site in Hyde Park, New York. He has also developed Emerald Ash Borer (EAB) strategies for Elgin, Illinois and London, Ontario and prepared tree protection plans for several residential, commercial, institutional, and recreational sites. He guided the creation of a non-profit nursery and urban forestry advocacy group in Missouri, and served terms as chairman of the Missouri Community Forestry Council. He was appointed by the Secretary of Agriculture to serve on the National Urban and Community Forestry Advisory Council and also serves on several committees with the USDA Forest Service and the International Society of Arboriculture including current terms on the ISA Certification Board and the ISA Tree Risk Panel of Experts. He is an ISA Board Certified Master Arborist and a Municipal Specialist (MW-0155BM) and a Certified Forester (#1516) through the Society of American Foresters.

Dave Klein Amcon Block & Precast Dave Klein has 28 years of landscape industry experience, and is entering his 8th year as The Allan Block wall systems sales representative for Amcon Block & Precast. Prior to this position, he worked at many of the levels within the industry from crew member, foreman, sales and design and owner of small hardscape construction company. He has also been a member of various MNLA committees over the last 6 years including the hardscape, contractor and education committees.

Dave Kleinhuizen Margolis Co. Dave Kleinhuizen is a resident of Forest Lake and has been involved in the nursery and landscape industry for 35 years. Shortly after attending Willmar Community College and the University of Minnesota where he studied landscape horticulture, Kleinhuizen began working at Margolis Company. Margolis Company is now celebrating 74 years of engagement in the green industry. In 1990, he became a partner in the company operations and today serves as the Vice President of Margolis Company. Margolis is involved in commercial and municipal landscape construction and site development. In 1990, Kleinhuizen began Hardwood Creek Nursery which has devoted itself to growing top quality deciduous trees on 50 acres in Forest Lake. The Nursery grows trees in 2-9â&#x20AC;?sizes for the regional landscape market. As an inventor, Kleinuizen holds two patents for industry related equipment. He has served MNLA as Landscape Contractors Committee co-chair as well as being a member of the Nursery Committee. Dave also currently serves as MNLA liaison to the Minnesota Shade Tree Advisory Council (MNSTAC) and is a member of MNLARC. He is also a member of the Forest Lake

Agriculture Advisory Committee at Forest Lake High School. Kleinhuizen has spoken to MNLA audiences several times on planting and transplanting related topics.

Vera Krischik University of Minnesota Dr. Vera Krischik is an associate professor in the Department of Entomology at the University of Minnesota and an extension specialist in landscape Integrated Pest Management (IPM). Krischik studied ecology at the University of Maryland where she earned a Ph.D. in entomology and a M.S. in zoology. She was a NSF sponsored visiting professor in plant chemistry and physiology at the the Institute of Ecosystem Studies, New York, Botanical Garden. She also worked as an IPM Administrator in Washington, DC for 7 years. Krischik teaches a course on IPM of landscape insects and team teaches in a course on pesticides. In June 2004, she published a 300-page manual, entitled "IPM of Midwest Landscapes" that is available at www.entomology.umn.edu/cues. It has over 1000 large color pictures of insect damage, biological control agents, and suggestions on conventional and biorational pesticides for trees and turf.

Mike Kriz IGCEMA Inc Mike Kriz has been in the golf course equipment maintenance industry for 13 years. Prior to that he spent 21 years in the USAF as an aerospace ground equipment technician, instructor and manager. Jeff Latterell has both a Certified Irrigation Designer and a Certified Landscape Irrigation Auditor designation from the Irrigation Association and is the managing director of Irrigation Consulting Group in Ham Lake. He also serves on the Education and Certification Committee with the Minnesota Nursery and Landscape Association. Latterell has been involved in the irrigation industry for over 30 years and is currently a licensed Power Limited Technician in Minnesota.

Debbie Lonnee Bailey Nurseries, Inc. For the first 13 years of her career, Debbie Lonnee worked in the retail garden center business, managing a large Twin Cities garden center. For the last 18 years, she has worked as a production coordinator at Bailey Nurseries, working primarily with the perennial and bedding plant crops, as well as roses and woody plants. She was promoted to manager of the Planning and Administration department in 2006 and is actively involved in new plant introductions. She is an avid gardener, and has a collectors garden full of hostas, daylilies and perennials, as well as many new annuals. She is a member of the Perennial Plant Association, OFA, and is the vice president of the Board of Directors of the Minnesota Nursery & Landscape Association, as well as chairing the Publications Committee. Garden writing is her second job; she is the horticultural editor for Northern Gardener magazine, and also writes the â&#x20AC;&#x2DC;Plant to Pickâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; article for each edition. Timothy Malooly is president of three Minnesota companies, Irrigation by Design, a landscape irrigation installation and service firm, Dulcet Fountains & Aeration, an outdoor water feature and water quality company and Water in Motion, a water consulting company specializing in outdoor water solutions. Malooly is very active in the green industry both locally and nationally serving or served on several boards including the Irrigation Association, MNLA, Gopher State One Call and Minnesota Board of Electricity. Currently, Malooly is participating on a standard committee sponsored by the International Code Council to assemble the first-ever ANSI consensus-based landscape irrigation standard; part of a growing trend to professionalize and formally codify the landscape irrigation and greater green industry across North America. He has addressed many groups in the U.S. and Canada on water-related topics and trends including government and regulatory agencies, green industry, environmental and business groups. Patrick McGuiness Zlimen & McGuiness, Attorneys at Law Patrick McGuiness is a founding partner of Zlimen & McGuiness, Attorneys at Law, a Saint Paul law firm which focuses on assisting green industry businesses. He has worked in the green industry since the age of 15 in a variety of roles from block-hauler to business owner. Mary Meyer Troy Lucht is the president and coowner of Malmborg's Greenhouse and Garden Centers, a family owned and operated business since 1972. He also has several other businesses connected to the industry: Plant Source International, Plant Source International Mexico, and the newest acqusition last year of Shady Oaks Nursery. Presently, Lucht respresents the green industry on the Grower Council and Board of Directors for Society of American Florists and he was recently elected to the Board of Trustees for Minnehaha Academy.

University of Minnesota Dr. Mary Meyer joined the University of Minnesota horticultural science faculty in 1993 and has primarily an extension/ outreach and research appointment. Her research interests include native and ornamental grasses and sedges, especially Miscanthus, Schizachyrium, Pennisetum and Carex pensylvanica. She has studied propagation and production of grasses including cold hardiness, and low maintenance sustainable landscaping. Blue HeavenTM is a patented little bluestem, (Schizachyrium), she released in 2007. She also conducts research on alternative low maintenance turfgrasses. Jay Michels Emmons & Olivier Resources, Inc. Jay Michels is a project manager with Emmons & Olivier Resources in Oakdale. He is a Certified Professional in Erosion and Sediment Control with over 30 years of experience in construction management, erosion control and stormwater management. The emphasis of his work is in low impact development project design, project management, storm water pollution and erosion and sediment control planning and implementation, ordinance and storm water program development and outreach and education. Michels is known for his work throughout the upper midwest as an educator on low impact development, storm water management and erosion and sediment control.

Kevin Norby Herfort-Norby Golf Course Architects Kevin Norby is the owner and principal of Herfort Norby Golf Course Architects in Chaska. Kevin attended the University of Idaho at Moscow and South Dakota State University at Brookings where he received a bachelor’s degree in landscape architecture. He is a member of the American Society of Golf Course Architects (ASGCA) and is an active member of numerous golf course industry associations including the Golf Course Superintendents Association of America (GCSAA) and the Midwest Public Golf Managers Association (MPGMA). In 1991, Norby formed Herfort Norby Golf Course Architects and worked with his partner and mentor Don Herfort until 2003. Today, Herfort Norby specializes exclusively in the design and renovation of golf courses. Norby has been involved with nearly 100 golf course projects throughout the United States, Canada and the Caribbean and is a frequent speaker and contributing writer on issues related to golf course design and master planning. His services cover all aspects of golf course development from site selection and market/ feasibility studies, to renovations and new course design. His most highly acclaimed new courses include The Refuge Golf Club and The Preserve on Rathbun Lake which both received national recognition for environmental sustainability from the Department of Natural Resources. Eric Nordlie Bailey Nurseries, Inc. Eric Nordlie graduated from the University of Minnesota in 1991 with a degree in urban forest management. Nordlie has been with Bailey Nurseries, Inc. for the past 18 years and has been the production manager in charge of plant health for the past 12 years. His responsibilities include bug, disease and weed control, soil and fertility management, and regulatory issues.

Kelly Norris Gardens by Kelly Productions Kelly D. Norris is a 25-year-old horticulturist, plant breeder, and plantsman from Iowa. He is the awardwinning author of three books including the Iowa Gardener’s Travel Guide, the first travel guide to Iowa’s public gardens and nurseries, and A Guide to Bearded Irises: Cultivating the Rainbow for Beginners and Enthusiasts (Timber Press 2012). As a speaker he has garnered national acclaim for his highenergy, zealous presentations, leading many to call him one of the rising stars of American horticulture. He currently manages Rainbow Iris Farm, a seven-acre nursery owned by his family, edits Irises: The Bulletin of the American Iris Society, and serves in several leadership capacities throughout the horticulture industry. Kelly is the youngest person to receive the Iowa State Horticultural Society’s Presidential Citation, Award of Merit and Honor Award in the organization’s 150 year history, awards that exemplify service and contributions to horticulture in Iowa. In 2011, he was also honored by the Perennial Plant Association with the Young Professional Award, recognizing early contributions to the advancement of herbaceous perennials in American horticulture. Carl Osterhaus The Toro Company Carl Osterhaus is the Commercial Division Service Education Manager with The Toro Company. In his seventeen years with Toro, he has been involved in every aspect of technician training from content development, program delivery and identifying educational needs to looking for new and innovative solutions. Jill Pokorny USDA Forest Service Jill Pokorny is a plant pathologist with the State & Private Forestry Branch of the USDA Forest Service, located in St. Paul. She provides technical assistance in the areas of tree risk management, disease evaluation and management, and plant disease diagnostics. Her work focuses on developing publications and other educational materials, conducting training workshops, and transferring technology to endusers.

Irrigation Otto Craig Otto is a water resource consultant for Irrigation Otto. He brings a wide range of irrigation experience in his almost 20 years in the industry. He started in the golf course industry as a superintendent, and moved to residential/commercial irrigation as a lead technician, ultimately owning and operating a service-based irrigation company. Otto has focused on promoting high efficiency irrigation as an instructor and curriculum developer for a major manufacturer, teaching nationally and internationally. His specialties include system design, consulting, and auditing.

Ray Pigati Minnesota Department of Agriculture Ray Pigati is a research scientist at the Minnesota Department of Agriculture. He works on a variety of pesticide issues throughout the state for the Pesticide and Fertilizer Management Division. Pigati has a B.S. in turfgrass management from Iowa State University and a M.S. in plant pathology from the University of Maryland.

Race Engineering & Assoc. Robert Race has a wide array of experience in engineering and the SRW market. He spent 5 years consulting with a geosynthetic manufacturing companies developing applications using geosynthetic reinforcements; 15 years consulting for a Segmental Retaining Wall company in developing and marketing SRW retaining wall systems; 10 years training and marketing SRW systems to the international markets; 20 years developing and training engineers and designers on design and installation of mechanically stabilized earth systems; 6 years consulting on Big Block retaining wall systems, Green Slope solutions, new product innovations and product development. Topics will include: Controller troubleshooting, programming, electrical troubleshooting, circuit troubleshooting, locating equipment; and wiring. This class provides eight hours of Power Limited Technician training credit orientated specifically towards the irrigation specialist.
