Category A and E - By attending the Pesticide Recertification workshop at the Northern Green Expo on Friday, January 10, you are completing the recertification requirements in Categories A - Core and E - Turf and Ornamentals. This workshop has been approved by the Minnesota Department of Agriculture (MDA). Licensed applicators with Categories A and E who last attended a recertification workshop in 2012, and newlicensed pesticide applicators in 2013, must attend an MDA-approved workshop by 12/31/2014. By attending the Pesticide Recertification track and completing the on-site attendance documentation, applicators will obtain recertification credit. The morning and afternoon start with general sessions that are required for all recertifying applicators. There are also breakout sessions where participants can choose sessions of interest. Applicators must attend the entire Pesticide Recertification track (4 general sessions plus 2 break-out sessions) to obtain MDA recertification credit. Attendance will be monitored. The MDA reserves the right to deny recertification credit to participants who arrive later than 30 minutes after the start of the program or who are absent during substantial portions of the program. Workshop participants should bring license and photo identification cards to the workshop. Category F (Aquatics) - The Northern Green Expo is again offering a Category F session at the 2014 Northern Green Expo on Thursday, January 9 from 2:00pm – 3:50pm. In order for licensed applicators to get credit for Category F - Aquatics, they must attend both Thursday afternoon Aquatics Pesticide Recertification and the Friday Pesticide Recertification. ATTENTION: Everyone seeking Pesticide Recertification must report to the MDA General Session by 7:30 a.m. All sessions are also open to attendees who are not seeking Pesticide Recertification, as space allows.

This session will cover the following: why chainsaws can be dangerous when not properly used; a general overview of OSHAâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s regulations; and chainsaws and common sense. We will also review safety apparel and explain its maintenance. Safety features on saws will be discussed, as well as safe practices with saws, such as: fueling, starting, use of chain brake, kickback and reactive forces, and general operation of the chainsaw. Dan Hinkley's first garden, Heronswood, was primarily a woodland enterprise, but his second garden called Windcliff, a property named by the first residents of this place, 6.2 acres on a high bluff above Puget Sound at the end of a dead end road near Indianola, Washington, is primarily an undertaking in full sun. Windcliff was purchased in 2000, and though some garden structure existed, the gardening process did not commence until 2002. Construction of the house and 'garden proper' began in early 2003 and Hinkley moved to Windcliff in spring of 2004. This presentation is meant to illustrate the attempt to illuminate the dialogue necessary to design a house and garden as one entity while using the local climate, lay of land and sense of place as inspiration. 8:20 AM - 9:20 AM | 102DEF

Green Industry Legislative Forum: Green Industry Business Opportunities in Stormwater Management Jay Michels

Urban stormwater management is becoming increasingly important to meet the requirements of the federal Clean Water Act. The Minimal Impact Design Standards (MIDS) workgroup (including MNLA) completed its collaboration with the Minnesota Pollution Control Agency (MPCA) last summer. Now, MPCA is updating the Minnesota Stormwater Manual to reflect the MIDS work products, including a higher clean water performance goal, new modeling methods and credit calculations for a variety of stormwater best management practices (BMPs), and a credits system and ordinance package that will allow municipalities embracing MIDS to meet their stormwater goals and mandates more effectively. What new business opportunities will these new MIDS products create? Which BMP’s will require design and/or oversight by an engineer, landscape architect or other professional? What professional certifications are available or necessary for green industry practitioners to design, install or maintain these stormwater BMP’s? Anthracnose is one of the most destructive diseases of annual bluegrass putting greens in the United States today. Many of the management practices that superintendents employ to increase green speed can actually enhance anthracnose severity. As a result, recent research has focused on understanding the effect of cultural and chemical practices on the incidence and severity of this important turfgrass disease. Attendees will learn how factors such as fertility, irrigation, cultivation, topdressing, plant growth regulators, and other management practices impact disease development. Emphasis will be placed on describing best management practices for anthracnose, including the benefits of using good nutritional programs to improve disease control and reduce fungicide usage while improving turfgrass quality. In this session, we will take a look at some of the technology based presentation programs. Attendees will learn how to leverage Trimble's free design program, SketchUp and other software to save money by bringing design in-house, to help customers visualize the end result, and to win more business.

Bacterial wilt and etiolated tiller syndrome are two problems on turf that have become an increasing concern to superintendents. Attendees will receive an update on what is currently known about the identification and control of bacterial diseases on cool-season turf, as well as the theories behind etiolated tiller syndrome which has become very common on golf courses throughout the United States. Brown ring patch (aka Waitea Patch) is a relatively new disease of annual bluegrass putting greens caused by the fungus Rhizoctonia circinata var circinata (= Waitea circinata var circinata). Bentgrass can also be affected; however, annual bluegrass is typically the major host. This disease is similar in appearance to yellow patch. Attendees will learn how factors such as fertility, plant growth regulators and other management practices impact disease development. Emphasis will be placed on describing current best management practices for this disease. Practical, field-based research examples will be used to highlight disease control concepts.

There are significant changes underway in the breeding, testing, production, and use of landscape roses. Spurred on by high consumer expectations, recent research, and creative innovation by industry to satisfy customers in a tight economy, there is much to look forward to in upcoming rose introductions. There is an increasing push to regional trialing and marketing of regionally superior cultivars and greater commitment than ever to roses with elevated disease resistance. Bees feed on pollen and nectar which results in pollination and the production of fruits and seeds. Both native bumblebees and managed honey bees have been in decline since neonicotinyl insecticides were registered in 1990. Loss of habitat, new pathogens, and lack of native plants for food also contribute to reduced bee health. Recent papers show that pesticide exposure to bees makes them more vulnerable to pathogens.

This presentation will give an overview of the Minnesota Department of Agriculture's water monitoring program, what has been detected in urban water samples recently, and how those detections are interpreted.

The majority of insecticides are called contact insecticides as the insect, by walking on the leaf or eating the leaf, absorbs the insecticide from the surface of the plant for 1-3 weeks. A flower that opens after a contact insecticide is sprayed has no insecticide in the pollen and nectar. Systemic insecticides are much less common. Insecticides move from the soil to the leaves and pollen and nectar of the plant and can remain in the plant for a year. Every flower
